Just hours after the u. S. Said it was shot down . horn blowing odonnell too close for comfort a russian warship closes in on a u. S. Destroyer. What happened when american warnings were ignored. Royally mad the queen appears for the first time after the duke and duchess say they want to bolt from britain. Tonight, the very public fallout, as meghan heads for canada. Megablaze two australian wildfires merge into one as tens of thousands are told to get out. And Steve Hartman goes on the road into his past. What he learned about himself and the family he never knew. This is the cbs evening news with Norah Odonnell reporting from the nations capital. Odonnell good evening to our viewers in the west. And as we come on the air tonight, there is breaking news across the south. Tornado warnings have been issued across several states and twisters have already been spotted. The threats only going to get worse as we head into the night when experts say the darkness make storms even more deadly. All of it is being fueled by a rare warmup. In some places, temperatures are up 50 degrees since thursday, approaching historic highs. As we head into the weekend, there is the threat of more tornadoes, as well as heavy rain, and in some places, more snow and ice. Wcbss lonnie quinn is tracking it all for us. And, lonnie, it sounds like its going to be a dangerous night. You know, its dangerous out there right now, norah. Places in texas, oklahoma, all the way as far north as missouri, tornado watches and some warnings as well. Its not tornado season, but a tornado doesnt carry a calendar. And right now some of the toughest weather is from dallas up towards oklahoma city, even south of that pushing down towards austin. This line is going to make its push to the east. Lets take a look at timing. By 2 00 in the morning, little rock, arkansas; shreveport; houston, texas you have to be on alert. It continues to push further east. 1 00 in the afternoon, nashville, tuscaloosa, all the way down to biloxi. What is causing this . Well, we have a jet stream right now that is streaming so fast, norah, lower level about 100 miles per hour. Just a little piece of that drops down to the surface, youve got a tornado out of it. And, also, that jet stream pushes well to the north and it creates this big, sort of, like, hump in the atmosphere, a ridge, and it fills in with all this warm air. 78 could be the high tomorrow in charleston, 68 for philadelphia, again, temperatures we typically shouldnt be experiencing this time of the year. Odonnell lonnie, thanks. We have some breaking news tonight from palm beach, florida. Police have arrested an iranian citizen not far from President Trumps maralago resort. They say he was carrying weapons and cash. Jeff pegues is with us for the latest. Jeff, how serious a threat . Reporter he is an iranian national, and he was arrested carrying a machete, pickaxe, and two knives, along with 22,000 in cash. He was identified as masoud yareilzoleh. Police also searched a car associated with him at Palm Beach International airport. The arrest happened about four miles from the president s club, maralago. Investigators are monitoring this one. Its not clear, norah, what his intentions are. Odonnell all right, a scary situation, thank you, jeff. Tonight, the president claims irans top general was planning to strike four u. S. Embassies before he was killed by an american drone strike. Members of congress say thats the first time theyve heard that. Paula reid posed the tough questions today at the white house. Reporter President Trump today revealed the mostspecific details yet about the imminent threats the u. S. Said prompted the killing of iranian general Qassem Soleimani. I can reveal that i believe it would have been four embassies. Reporter but just last night, secretary of state mike pompeo said the administration did not have precise information about the threat. We dont know precisely when, and we dont know precisely where, but it was real. Reporter can you clarify, did you have specific information about an imminent threat . And did it have anything to do with our embassies . We had specific information on an imminent threat, and those threats included attacks on u. S. Embassies. Period. Full stop. Reporter so you were mistaken when you said you didnt know precisely when and you didnt know precisely where . No, completely true. Those are consistent thoughts. We dont exactly which minute. We dont know exactly which day it would have been executed. But its very clear Qassem Soleimani himself was plotting a broad, largescale attack against american interests. Reporter multiple lawmakers tell cbs news that Administration Officials did not mention a specific threat to u. S. Embassies in briefings for members of congress this week. The briefing was incredibly thin on facts. Reporter cbs news has also learned that the administration did not disclose an attempt to target another top Iranian Military leader. The u. S. Military tried but failed to kill the head of the Iranian Revolutionary guard in yemen on the same day it killed soleimani. Odonnell and paula joins us now from the white house. All right, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said today shes going to send those articles of impeachment to the senate next week. Any reaction from the president . Reporter norah he called it ridiculous. And for the first time he said he would invoke executive privilege to block his former National Security adviser john bolton from participating in a senate trial. Now, bolton has said hes willing to participate. Democrats, they want to hear from him. So if he receives a subpoena, it will likely be up to the courts to decide if he testifies. Odonnell all right, paula, thank you. Tonight, nato is demanding full transparency as iran investigates the crash of a ukrainian jetliner. 176 people were killed wednesday, including at least 63 canadians, just hours after iran fired missiles at u. S. Forces in iraq. Well, today, Elizabeth Palmer went to the crash site near tehran, and its been picked clean. Reporter this video, shot by an eyewitness, captured the ukrainian plane exploding. 48 hours later. Im standing in what local people say is the crash site. Just behind me, you can see theres a hole. Its an impact crater. Something big was in there, something over there as well. But whatever was there is not there now. The iranians cleared the crash site a full 24 hours before ukrainian investigators could visit the scene. Scavengers picked over what was left, and its not much a shoe, a little backpack. Today, secretary of state mike pompeo blamed the iranians. We do believe that its likely that that plane was shot down by an iranian missile. Reporter u. S. Satellites detected two surfacetoair missiles launched at the boeing 737 as it climbed away from tehrans airport. The explosion sent shrapnel through the fuselage, and thats what u. S. Intelligence believes brought down the plane. The wreckage is crucial evidence. Iranian teams immediately collected the bodies and then moved the plane parts to the airport, where ukrainian investigators have begun to look at them. Ukraines Foreign Affairs minister vadym prystaiko. We are analyzing the pieces of the plane and the bodies of the people. Reporter iran says they will share the contents of the black boxes, which will be key to finding answering for those left behind. Hamed esmaelion lost his daughter and his wife pareesa who posted this selfie just before the flight took off. He says he told his Daughters School she wouldnt be coming back. I told them that, okay, reera will be absent forever. So. That was a hard moment for me. Reporter one of the state News Agencies here is now reporting that iran is ready tomorrow to announce the cause of the crash. Now, we already know that they were pointing to mechanical failure. Norah. Odonnell all right, liz, from tehran tonight, thank you. An american destroyer was aggressively approached by a Russian Navy Ship in the arabian sea yesterday. The fifth fleet says it was a near collision. The russian ship came within 60 yards of the uss farragut. The American Ship responded with five shot blasts of its horn, and the russians eventually changed course. Tonight, the f. A. A. Is hitting boeing with a multimillion dollar fine, this after newly released internal emails reveal employees were raising red flags about the 737 max years ago as the plane was being developed. Two of the jets later crashed overseas killing 346 people. Kris van cleave tonight on what those emails say. Reporter the 117 pages of messages show boeing employees ridiculing colleagues, mocking the f. A. A. , airlines, and even making light of potential issues with the 737 max. The two max crashes killed 346. One wrote, this airplane is designed by clowns who in turn are supervised by monkeys. Another asked a colleague, would you put your family on a max simulator trained aircraft . I wouldnt. No was the response. The messages, sent between 2013 and 2018, predate the lion air crash in indonesia, raising questions about whether boeing knew of potential problems. Transportation Committee ChairmanPeter Defazio this stuff is absolutely outrageous. Theyre going to have to do some big House Cleaning at boeing. Reporter lion air wanted Simulator Training for its max pilots in 2017, but it appears boeing talked them out of it, an employee ridiculing the airline for asking, calling them idiots. A boeing test pilot boasted about deceiving the f. A. A. , who was in charge of certifying the 737 max. I still havent been forgiven by god for the covering up i did last year. They were deliberately concealing information from the f. A. A. Reporter norah, then there are these emails from 2013, where boeing employees talk about the system at the center of these two crashes and efforts to keep it secret. Boeing says the emails are completely inappropriate. Odonnell devastating. All right, kris, thank you. Tonight, Buckingham Palace is in crisis. The 93yearold monarch has reportedly been holding crisis talks with grandsons harry, william, and son, Prince Charles, while britains tabloid press are still fuming at harry and meghan, the nation, they say is shocked. But for hirsch, who has written extensively about meghan its not shocking at all. Many people of color in britain are saying we know exactly why shes leaving. We have seen the racism towards her play out in real time. And one of the incredible ironies of this situation is the very commentators in the media that have busied themselves hurling racist abuse at Meghan Markle for month after month are now the ones professing to be the most shocked that she has reacted. Reporter there are plenty of people saying race isnt a factor, that the criticism harry and meghan face is because theyre not acting like royals. There are so many examples of the racism that has been directed towards Meghan Markle. In some cases, theres nothing subtle about it. Reporter also not being seen as subtle this latest Instagram Post from the couples official account. Harry and meghan visited this London Community kitchen theyve long been supportive of just a few days ago, perhaps giving us a glimpse of the progressive new role as royals they say they want to create for themselves.
