Dubois good evening, scott is on assignment, im maurice dubois. The United States took both offensive and defensive action today in response to the worldwide terror threat. That threat had already caused the state department to put out an alert for americans traveling overseas and shut down 19 u. S. Embassies and consulates from east africa across the middle east and in bangladesh through saturday. Today the u. S. Began evacuating nonessential american personnel from the embassy in yemen and fired a drone at suspected al qaeda terrorists in that country. Homeland security correspondent bob orr has details tonight. Bob . Reporter maurice, while the threat remains vague tonight, u. S. Officials insist the danger has not passed. Intelligence analysts increasingly now believe the most likely target of an al qaeda strike is inside yemen. An air force c17 flew into the capital city of sanaa today to evacuate dozens of u. S. Workers from the american embassy. Staffers, including some described as Emergency Personnel were ordered to the airport and put on a flight to an air force base in germany. British and french authorities also ordered diplomats out, drawing a stinging rebuke from the Yemen Ministry of foreign affairs. While the government of yemen appreciates foreign governments concern for the safety of their citizens, the evacuation of Embassy Staff serves the interest of extremists. As the evacuations unfolded in the capital, a u. S. Drone strike took out four al qaeda militants as they road in a car just to the southeast. Sources say no top operatives were killed, but sources say no top operatives were killed, but it was the fourth drone strike inside yemen in less than two weeks. An obvious effort to disrupt planning and potential plots by al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. A. Q. A. P. Is under pressure from al qaeda chief Ayman Alzawahiri to step up operations against the u. S. Sources say in communications intercepted by u. S. Intelligence alzawahiri instructed a. Q. A. P. Leaders to do something big. Theres a high probability the target is some western facility inside yemen. A. Q. A. P. Fighters, bomb makers and terror commanders are already there, making a local attack relatively easy to execute. But intelligence officials can not rule out other external plots, thats why 19 u. S. Diplomatic posts across north africa and the middle east will remain closed at least through saturday. As part of the investigation, u. S. Officials are also looking at communications between known Foreign Terrorists and friends and relatives who might be living here inside the u. S. But investigators tell us so far maurice, they see no domestic connection to the current threat. Dubois bob orr, thank you. At the courtmartial of former Army Psychiatrist nidal hasan today, the prosecution and defense agreed on at least one thing hasan is the man who opened fire at fort hood killing 13 fellow soldiers and wounding dozens more. Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 of attempted murder. He could get the death penalty. With his life on the line, hasan has chosen to act as his own attorney. Anna werner is at fort hood tonight. Reporter in opening statements, the Army Prosecutor said the attack was carefully planned by major nidal hasan just before he was to be deployed to afghanistan. That hasan bought a gun, practiced at a shooting range and stockpiled ammunition to kill as many soldiers as he could. Army colonel Steve Hendricks told the court hasan did not want to deploy and came to believe he had a jihad duty to kill fellow soldiers. Hasan, who is acting as his own attorney, was calm in his statement. He said the evidence will clearly show that i am the shooter. But, he said, he was among imperfect muslims trying to establish the perfect religion. He added i apologize for any mistakes i made in this endeavor. Worst day of my life, ever. Ill never forget it clear as a bell forever, unfortunately. Reporter leila hunt willinghams younger brother jason was killed in the attack. She hopes the courtmartial will provide answers. I dont believe in the word closure because it never really goes away. But i just wanted that piece of knowing what his last moments were like. I just wanted to know if he was scared. And i dont know why. I need to know that. It just breaks my heart. It bothers me so much to think he was. Reporter that he was scared. Yeah. Reporter and you couldnt be there to protect him. Its just hard to think about. Reporter and today the prosecutor said that jason hunt was one of three soldiers who stood up to protect a group of nurses during the attack. And, maurice, in the coming days major hasan may crossexamine some of the very people hes accused of shooting. Dubois anna, thank you. The u. S. Government has charged the leader of a libyan militia, ahmed khattalah, in connection with the benghazi attack. The exact charges are not known and khattalah is still at large. But these are the first charges in the attack on the u. S. Diplomatic compound last september 11. U. S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other americans were killed. Those of us who remember the pictures of a very fit president george w. Bush running and riding a Mountain Bike were surprised to hear he was in a dallas hospital today getting treatment for a clogged artery. Mr. Bush is 67 and had no history of heart disease. Our dr. Jon lapook has more about this. Reporter a statement from the former president s office said doctors discovered the blockage yesterday during mr. Bushs annual physical. He then agreed with his physicians recommendation to have a stent put in. In this procedure, a clogged blood vessel feeding the heart is usually opened up with a tiny balloon and the stent is placed to keep the artery from closing. Specific details on why mr. Bush received the stent have not been released. Almost half a Million People get them every year, but theres controversy about which patients benefit. So far, studies have shown that unless a person is having a heart attack or near heart attack, a stent is no better than medication and Lifestyle Changes at prolonging life or preventing a future heart attack. But many cardiologists believe there is still a benefit if a large part of the heart is threatened. Dr. Lawrence phillips is a cardiologist at n. Y. U. Langoan medical center. Theres a tremendous about of debate right now and i think that in the past we believed there was much more benefit to opening every narrowed blood vessel. Reporter blockages are usually found during a stress test or testing for symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath. Mr. Bush is said to be in high spirits and is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow. Dubois jon, i want to nail this down. You said stents are beneficial only if youre having or about to have a heart attack. So people have to be wondering do they work otherwise . Maurice, i spoke a number of cardiologists today and they agree if a patient has a blockage in the artery supply in the heart thats so high up that its threatening the blood supply of a lot of the heart, a good percentage of the heart muscle is at risk, its reasonable to put a stent in even though the person is not having a heart attack or near heart attack. This, though, is a very controversial area. It needs more study and studies are going on to see who exactly should get a stent and who should not. Dubois well follow it. Dr. Jon lapook, thank you very much. Two u. S. Senators are warning the crisis in egypt may get worse soon unless democracy is restored. Protesters have filled the streets since the military removed president Mohamed Morsi last month. Republicans john mccain and Lindsey Graham flew to cairo at president obamas request and today they told egypts military leader general abdel fatah al sisi the time is running out. Ararissa ward sat down with both senators in cairo. Reporter are you alarmed by what you see happening in egypt . Oh, my god. I didnt know it was this bad. These folks are days or weeks away from all out bloodshed. Reporter senators graham and mccain outlined the steps that general alsisi should take to prevent that. Theres only one way that we can bring about a peaceful egypt and that is a process of negotiation and reconciliation between the major players. Reporter did you get the sense that general alsisi embraced your message . I got the impression about general alsisi that he is very a very strong man and that he is trying to do what he thinks is best for the egyptian people. But without reconciliation we know how this movie ends. You cannot sustain the status quo, and he understands that. Reporter graham and mccain said the Muslim Brotherhood leaders must be released from prison to enter into negotiations and that both sides must renounce violence. But the government has warned that the window for dialogue is rapidly closing. Do you think egypt might fail . I think it might. I think i wouldnt be here if i didnt think that it might. And i think the events in the next few weeks will determine that. Ill go one step further. I think its going to fail if rimething doesnt change. And to the american people, failure in egypt matters to us. Dubois Clarissa Ward joins us now from cairo. Clarissa, im wondering, whats been the reaction of everyday egyptians to the senators visit . Reporter well, maurice anti american sentiment is at an all time high here and egyptians who support the military are particularly sensitive about the coup word. They hate it. So they were very unhappy that both senators called the militarys takeover a coup with senator mccain even joking hey, if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck. Dubois i think we get the idea. Clarissa ward, thank you very much tonight. T News Conference today. Hassan rouhani gave the strongest indication yet that iran wants to settle the dispute over its nuclear program. Elizabeth palmer is among the correspondents who questioned rouhani in tehran. Reporter as he arrived to face a room full of journalists, president rouhani knew thered be no ducking the sensitive issue of u. S. Iranian relations. Madam elizabeth palmer, cbs news. Reporter do you see any prospect of direct talks with the American Administration during your term in office . Shrewd diplomat that he is, rouhani didnt say yes, but he didnt say no, either. If it were in our National Interest he said wed have no problem talking to anyone of good will even the United States. Irans new president is under enormous pressure from voters to rescue their battered economy. To do that, he needs the u. S. To lift International Sanctions which were imposed to force iran to prove its not developing nuclear weapons. Today rouhani signaled loud and clear that he does want a deal that would satisfy the u. S. And its allies and dial back the threat of a military confrontation. I as the president announce that iran has a serious political will to solve the Nuclear Problem he said. To the reporters in the room, and to governments watching around the world, that sounded like the clearest commitment in years that iran is ready to compromise on a nuclear agreement. But president rouhani also criticized what he said were mixed messages coming from washington. On the one hand, pressure for even more sanctions, on the other hand, an office in the white house to be a willing partner in negotiation. Threats, he said, were not going to lead to a resolution, only respectful dialogue would. Dubois liz palmer in tehran tonight, thank you. What has the rover told us about mars . Well, very simply, weve discovered a habitable environment. Turns out to be an ancient lake, probably a lake that existed 3. 5 billion years ago when the climate on mars was very different. Reporter this revolutionary rover took more than a decade to design and build. It has captured 37,000 full images of mars and the publics imagination. Nearly 1. 4 Million People follow curiosity on twitter where the rover even posted its own selfie from mars. Liftoff of Space Shuttle atlantis.
