Pelley good evening, today in rome, president obama called on russia to pull its troops back from the Ukrainian Border, and tonight, the russian president Vladimir Putin called president obama to discuss a resolution. President obama said the world is unified in opposing and condemning what he called russias illegal occupation of ukraines crimea peninsula. That occupation started last month. Now, pentagon correspondent david martin is reporting tonight that the russians are massing another 40,000 to 50,000 troops on the Ukrainian Border with all that they need for combat operations. In the interview here in hometoday, mr. Obama sent this midge. Youve seen a range of troops massing along that border under the guise of military exercises, but these are not what russia would normally be doing. It may simply be an effort to intimidate ukraine, or it may be that theyve got additional plans. In either case what, we need right now to resolve and deescalate the situation would be for russia to move back those troops and to begin negotiations directly with the ukrainian government, as well as the international community. Pelley what is Vladimir Putin after . If you take him at his word that pelley can you . Well, on this i think hes been willing to show a deeply held grievance about what he considers to be the loss of the soviet union. I think theres a strong sense of russian nationalism, and a sense that somehow the west has taken advantage of russia in the past, and that he wants to in some fashion reverse that or make up for that. Pelley after the interview, mr. Obama flew to saudi arabia for talks on the syrian civil war. That humanitarian catastrophe is a battle between the two main branches of islam, with iran supporting the shia muzz lum government, and saudi arabia supporting the sunni muzz lum rebels. King abdullah believes mr. Obama has not done nearly enough for the rebel cause. Nearly 150,000 people have been killed. More than two million are refugees. To look at a country like syria and see how its been torn apart, to see the humanitarian crisis thats taking place, surely, that is not consistent with any reasonable interpretation of what islam is all about, to see children starving or murdered, to see families having to abandon their homes. Thats contrary, i think, to any religious doctrine that sensible people would embrace. Pelley when you see those children starving and dying, as you put it, do you regret not applying u. S. Force and not applying it early . It is, i think, a false notion that somehow we were in a position to, through a few selective strikes, prevent the kind of hardship weve seen in syria. Pelley and syria is not worth that to you . Well, its not that its not worth it. Its that after a decade of war, the United States has limits. And our troops who have been on these rotations and their families and the costs, and the capacity to actually shape in a sustained way an outcome that was viable without us having a further commitment of perhaps another decade, those are things that the United States would have a hard time executing, and its not clear whether the outcome, in fact, would have turned out significantly better. Pelley now, the white house is telling us tonight that the russian president phoned president obama after mr. Obama landed in saudi arabia. The two leaders talked for an hour. The call is described as frank and direct and, apparently, centered on russia opening negotiations directly with ukraine. We also talked to president obama today about his meeting with pope francis and what he found inspiring in that. Well have that for you later in the broadcast. It has now been three weeks since Malaysia Airlines flight 370 vanished without a trace. Today the search was moved to a new area in the southern indian ocean weflts of australia. Its about 700 miles northeast of where ships and planes had been looking for the wreckage of the boeing 777. Holly williams is in perth, where its saturday morning. Holly. Reporter scott, weather permitting, the search planes are scheduled to take uvehere this morning headed to the new search area, which is roughly the size of new mexico. After a week scouring the seas of australias west coast, the search teams were given the frustrating news theyd been looking in the wrong place. The sudden switch came after investigators and the planes maker, boeing, took another look at the radar data. The head of australias Transportation Safety bureau martin dolan. This continuing analysis indicates the plane was traveling faster than was previously estimated resulting in increased fuel usage and reducing the possible distance it traveled south into the indian ocean. Reporter because its further north, the new search zone will be less affected by bad weather that slowed down the hunt for wreckage. Its also closer to land, which means the crews will have more time in the air before they need to return to base to refuel. On the first day in the new search area, five teams spotted object of interest. Now, its too soon to tell whether that debris is the wreckage of the boeing 777 but, scott, it was by far their most productive day. Pelley hole, thanks very much. Heavy rain today hamperredly the search for victims of the mudslides north of seattle. Nearly a week after they wiped out the village, there are 26 confirmed dead, but 90 others are listed as missing. John blackstone is following the search for us tonight. John. Reporter scott, we spent some time today with two volunteer firefighters who have been searching at the site every day. Theyre a married couple, jeff and Jan Mcclellan and they were among the first on the seen after the lands slide hit. Take a square mile of land, scoop it all up trees, rocks, everything put it all into a blender, blend it until its all chopped up, pour it on the ground. Thats what we were in. It was things i never want to see again. Reporter that would seem to explain, as well, why the cleanup is so difficult. You take things off in layers. You know, youre removing layers and layers of material, and we pick through the pile by hand, with shovels, and wed go down, like, 12 feet in the pile, and then youre still finding dry wall. , you know, pieces of beams off houses, roofing material 20 feet down under the mud. Reporter they are searching for people they know, one of them alan was with his fiance delaney. They were going over wedding plans when the landslide hit. They left at the peak of their love in an area they love to be at. I dont even think they know what hit him them and thats how im picturing it and that it was fast. I talk to alan every single day and tell him i love him and when i get stressed, really upset, my heart feels like its going to explode, i just go, alan, i need you, and he calms me down. John, thanks very much. Late today, general motor said it is expanding its recall of small cars because of faulty ignition switches. The recall now includes newer models. Jeff glor has been following this for us. Its a recall of every single car manufactured under six different models. 971,000 additional cars are involved in the last five weeks. That brings the number of recalled vehicles by g. M. To 2. 6 million. Here are the ones affected g. M. Is agenda the new model years because faulty ignition switches may have beenitudes repair some of these vehicles. The switches can suddenly turn to the off or accessory position. That turns you off the enemy, disabling power steering, power brakes, seat belts and airbags. G. M. Said at least 12 deaths in 31 crashes are linked to prohibit. They first learned about issues with ignition switches in 2001, but didnt start the recalls until last month. On tuesday, hearings start before congress. Exwm c. E. O. Mary berra will be there. Cars already sold are not being recalled. Federal safety regulators today closed their investigation of battery fires in tesla models electric cars after the company said it had fixed the problem. Twice last year, tesla batteries caught fire after road debris pungtured their casing. No one was hurt. Tesla is now installing new metal shields to better protect the batteries.
