This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. Tonight, as passover begins and jews celebrate freedom from oppression, a white supremacist is under arrest suspected of making them targets of his hatred. Three people were killed yesterday with a shotgun at two Jewish Community facilities outside kansas city. All of the victims, as it turned out, were christian. The suspect, 73yearold Frazier Glenn miller, is a form ku klux klan leader. We have two reports tonight. First, Dean Reynolds in overland park, kansas. Reporter even before the Police Arrived at the Jewish Community center before they arrested the heavily armed shooting suspect nearby and bundled him away in a cruiser, a handful of people were on the scene and knew it was bad. One in particular. I am the daughter of a victim and mother of a victim. Reporter Mindy Corporon said she had driven to the center to hear her 14yearold son reed sing at a competition and to join her father a 69yearold doctor known to his ten grandchildren as popeye. I kept pulling around and saw my fathers body lying next to the truck. I knew as soon as i came upon my dad that he was in heaven. Reporter then she saw her son. I could tell that he seemed out of it. I couldnt even tell that, if id tried to speak to him, he could have spoken. It was very quick and blurry. Reporter reed was a terrific singer. Oh, say can you see. An a student and one step away from an eagle scout. A third victim, teresa rose, was visiting her mother at a nearby retirement home. All three killed were christians, but because of the suspects antisemitic statement, Police Believe jews may have been the target. To mindy and her brothers its inexplicable. Its trying to make sense of it. Pelley can you . No, no amount of gauze or bandages will heal this. It will be an open wound for the rest of our lives. Reporter mindys son reed practiced a song for his mother before leaving yesterday the song is called youre gonna miss me when im gone now the father for reed and his grandfather will be held this friday, good friday. Pelley dean, thanks very much. Bob orr has been looking into the history of the suspect. Reporter for nearly 40 years, the suspect, Frazier Glenn miller, has pursued an agenda of intolerance and racism. White power reporter the Southern Poverty Law Center which tracks hate groups said miller founded his own chapter of the ku klux klan in the 1980s. As the selfproclaimed grand dragon he later renamed his group the White Patriot Party and led rallies in military fatigue under the confederate flag. One god, one race, one nation under god, so help us god almighty, white power reporter frazier has openly preached a message of white supremacy. I think blacks in the United States and jewish people are the most racist people on earth. Reporter miller is no stranger to Law Enforcement. In 1987, the u. S. Marshals issued this wanted poster. A short time later miller and four other klansmen were arrested for stockpiling illegal weapons. Miller spent three years in prison getting out early in exchange for testifying against fellow white supremacists. He tried politics, running and repeatedly failing on a white power platform. In 2010, he ran for the u. S. Senate in missouri and appeared on Howard Sterns radio program. Miller railed against Jewish American leaders. Reporter millers campaign went nowhere. He collected seven votes out of the nearly two million cast. The f. B. I. Agent leading this investigation said miller has long been on the radar of Law Enforcement but sources say so far, scott, theres no indication he made any specific threat or gave any warning prior to sundays shooting. Pelley bob orr in our Washington News room. Thank you, bob. President obama spoke about the shootings at a Prayer Breakfast this morning in washington. As americans, we not only need to open our hearts to the families of victims, weve got to stand united against this kind of terrible violence which has no place in our society. Pelley the president said the government will provide whatever assistance is needed to support the investigation. Later today, mr. Obama spoke by phone with russian president Vladimir Putin and expressed his concern about interference in ukraine. Prorussian protesters have now taken over government buildings in ten cities in the east, and ukraines government has done nothing so far to remove them. The fear is that this could be leading up to a russian invasion of the east, a repeat of the crimea takeover. Holly williams is on the scene. Reporter in horlivka this morning, masked pro russian protesters stormed the police headquarters. Then after occupying the station raised a russian flag. They put up barricades around the building. They told us theyre expecting a fight with the ukrainian government, they just dont know when it will happen. Vadim morozov is a coal miner who said he joined the protest because the ukrainian authorities treat russian speaking people in the east end of the country like secondclass citizens. These men are heros, he said, and the government in kiev is illegal. Inside, we found the policeman who used to work here but now defected to the side of protestors. He told us Commanding Officers from the Central Government expected trouble and confiscated pistols over the weekend. So you dont have any guns . You dont have any weapons now . No. Reporter nothing . Nothing. Reporter as antigovernment militants have occupied state buildings across eastern ukraine, the countrys government and the u. S. Have blamed russia for orchestrating the unrest. They fear a repeat of what happened in crimea last month, when separatists demonstrations were a pretext for thousands of Russian Troops in unmarked uniforms to annex the region. But alexander, one of the protest leaders in horlivka, denied any russian involvement. There are only local people here, he told us, and this was a spontaneous demonstration. Pelley Holly Williams is joining us now from donetsk. But alexander, one of the protest leaders in horlivka, denied any russian involvement. There are only local people here, he told us, and this was a spontaneous demonstration. Pelley Holly Williams is joining us now from donetsk. Holly, the u. S. Is saying the russians are behind this, have you seen any evidence of Russian Forces . We havent seen anyone we could positively identify as russian. And there simply hasnt been the kind of largescale Russian Military intervention we saw in crimea. However, nato said there are thousands of Russian Troops along ukraines border and some here look like they were well coordinated by someone. Pelley holly, thanks very much. As if the tensions couldnt get higher today, the u. S. Military said a russian fighter jet made 12 close passes near an american destroyer in the black sea. Our mission right now is to look at the higher Priority Areas and see if theres any debris there and just to continue to keep hitting the small areas to see what we see on the bottom. Reporter the blue fin 21 is working in 24hour cycles. It takes two hours to reach the ocean floor 15,000 feet below the surface. The submersible will scan the seabed for 16 hours and draw up a picture of the environment looking for wreckage. When it returns to the ship, the ocean shield, investigators will spend four hours downloading and analyzing the data it collected. On its First Mission, the blue fin 21 is surveying 16 square miles, an area about twothirds the size of manhattan. Authorities will redefine the search area and redeploy the sub. Angus houston is in charge. It might be very difficult to find something, and you dont know how good any lead is until you get your eyes on the wreckage. The submersibles First Mission did not go exactly as planned. After completing about six hours of the ocean floor scan, bluefin21 exceeded its operating depth limit of 15,000 feet and a builtin safety feature returned it to the surface. The data it collected is now being evaluated and analyzed. Seth doane, cbs news, beijing.
