Osgood summer song fit for any season soul man was a big hit for sam moore and dave pratter back in 1976. Half century later sam moore is still very much the soul man eager to share his story with our anthony mason. In the 1960s, sam moore was one half of soul musics most explosive duo. Sam and dave were known as double dynamite. The sultans of sweat. We were electrifying. Because we had no act. What do you mean you had no act . All we did is go out there and sing and preach and scream. We didnt have no steps like the four tops or the temps. It worked. It did. It did. It did my dear friend, it did. In the mid 60s their string of ten straight top 20 r b hits would include two soul masterpieces. Hold on im comin and soul man. Recorded in the stax studios in memphis, tennessee. Right here. Right here was what . This was the booth, you know, where we stood. Its a museum today. But the 78yearold singer showed us where the magic was made. Step in. Thats enough. Right there. This is where we record right here. Moores pleading tenor which Rolling Stone magazine ranked as one of the 100 greatest voices of the rock era, developed in church as a boy. In the beginning you really wanted to be a preacher . Yes, i did. I would get out there on saturdays and put a table out front. And i had a comic book, opened it up, thats my bible. And i think i repeated the lords prayer about 40 times. That was fine. My mother took issue with me when i would come from around my pulpit and i would pass the hat. I love the comic book as the bible part. Yes, as the bible. Archie. Moores music career began in gospel groups. In 1957 he was set to replace the great sam cooke in the soul stirrers. I was supposed to leave monday and to go chicago and be fitted for clothing and do our first traveling job in the car and sing. But that night he went to a Jackie Wilson concert. He was singing and the winking and the blinking and gyrating the body. I sat up like this, i saw men screaming and women thats what you want to do. I wanted to do that. Well, coward me. I hid. From the soul stirrers . Yeah. I did. So they left without you . They had to because they couldnt find me. Moore would meet dave prater at a miami nightclub. Their routine came together by accident. You didnt rehearse . No. It was all spontaneous. Spontaneous. We used the stage in the nightclubs like a pulpit. I preached. You would hear people from the audience go, say it, sam, tell the truth, sam. Producer jerry wexler caught their act and signed the du to, Atlantic Records then shipped them off to memphis. Stax would pair sam and dave with two young songwriters, dave porter and isaac hayes, who would later had his own huge hit shaft would back the new duo with the stax distinctive attorneys. The three horns would be standing this side, and isaac would be teaching this is what i want, actually the horn sound thats basically. Stax star act was otis redding when the labels legendary soul review would tour sam and dave stole the show. But sams relationship with dave was always tumultuous and never recovered after prater shot and wounded his own wife in a domestic dispute in 1968. What did you say to him after that incident . I remember saying to him, ill sing, ill even record with you. But ill never talk to you again. Never. And i didnt for 12 years. 12 and a half years. Didnt. Their performance on saturday night live in 1980 would be one of their last together. Dave prater died in a car accident eight years later. How did you feel . I still havent mourned. You havent . No. I feel bad that he died the way that he did. I feel bad that we never got a chance to maybe we could have done something because of the name. The name was still worth something. Moore had his own long battle with drugs. It would say joyce mcrae who became his wife and manager toe break him of his additions. Just stay right there, stay right there. Because junkies are liars. They are abusers. They are cons, all that in to one she had to endure. What would have happened if joyce hadnt come along . Id be dead. But at 78, that voice has lost none of its power. With the country band nublue he recorded a tribute to george jones. A few years ago he brought down the house with bill immediately of the righteous brothers at the songwriters hall of fame gala. And he passes on the heritage to kids at the stax music academy. Sam moore has always been uncomfortable being called the original soul man. But i know this, at the end of the night before i leave that stage i better do soul man. Gotta do it. Coming to you you know, do i get tired, yeah. But you know what when you go in to it and i look up and see them jumping up and down it all leaves. Its an honor to do it, man. Yeah, its an honor. Osgood just ahead. New words. [bell rings] waitress welcome to dennys osgood actress Lauren Bacall died this last week at the age of 89. Decades of work on stage and screen won her a loyal following. David edelstein offers this appreciation. Whenever we lose a link to lustrous black and White Hollywood the world gets a little less bright and it dimmed this past week with the loss of Lauren Bacall, actress, glamour icon and for a time, devoted wife of humphrey bogart. She was a jewish girl from new york. Born betty perske in 1924. Six years later her father abandoned the family. Their teen years after that, after appearing on the cover of Harpers Bazaar she and her mother arrived in hollywood at the behest of the director howard hawks. Been call later said hawks wanted to find a girl from no where to mold in to the ultimate hawks woman. A female with male assertiveness, who gives as good as she gets. He hit paydirt in 1944 when he cast betty, whose name he changed to lauren, opposite bogart in to have and have not. Look, im tired, i want to get some sleep. Not a bad idea. She was tall, feline. You know how to whistle. Just put your lips together and blow. And that husky purr made her seem the opposite of what she really was, a scared 19yearold virgin who inadd vert recently created, quote, the look. Head down, chin low, eyes up at bogart. What about it . To keep herself from trembling. The other times youre just a they had a teasing intimacy. What did you do that for . See whether i like it. Whats the decision . I dont know yet. She was an instant sensation, play write told her, half seriously it would be downhill from there. He was kind of right. She never burned a hole in the screen like that again. Whats wrong with you . Nothing you cant fix. She came close with hawks and bogart as a sultry rich girl in the big sleep with dialogue rich in senator dodging double entendres. You have a touch of class, but i dont know how far you can go. A lot depends on whos in the saddle. Been call and bogart fell for each other hard and married when bogart divorced his third wife. Where pun hawks, who probably wanted been call for himself. The sad part is no director fight found her sweet spot again. She was happy with bogart they had two kids, threw great parties, palled around with movie and literary titans but acting, not much. Few female roles in the 50s could fully tap her wit. Well ill tell you. She was cheeky and elegant as den mother of gold biggers Marilyn Monroe in how to mary a hill john mayer. If i dont marry him hes caught you. There were flashes of her marvelous timing in designing woman where she wore clothes like a cream. Out in the open. You dont like my friends. Well, im not sounds like you are. Bogart died in 1957 of cancer likely from all those unfiltered cigarettes. Bacall rebounded with an unstable Frank Sinatra then moved to new york married another hard drinking actor, Jason Robards as great in his way as bogart but no where near as reliable. The good parts stopped coming. But the 40something bacall stayed in the game by going on stage. In the musical applause she won a tony. She said she hated competing against other actors but she thirted for approval. Were going out next week. A quarter century later she got an oscar nomination. Did he kiss you . As Barbra Streisands mouthy mom in the mirror has two faces. Sweet, actually. More than a decade after losing, the academy gave her an honorary oscar. Dont worry, kid, youll get back. Bacall never got out from under bogies shadow. With the image of lauren did live forever in glorious black and white. That slouching kid with the sideways glance. Yes, we lost a link last week to the glamour of old hollywood. But more important to its soul. What are you wearing today . Osgood show time for one mans campaign for kindness. Lets just have fun. Making people smile. ,,,,,, osgood could entire movie be based on selfness acts of kindness . It could. The man our Steve Hartman has been following is involved. Unlike most red carpet premiers this one in durham, north carolina, wasnt about fashion. What are you wearing today . I just bought it at the mall. It wasnt about shameless self promotion. It felt really good to help out someone. It definitely wasnt about making money. You have the ability to change the world with just an act of kindness. Chris rosati put together the premiere. Chris has als, lou gehrigs disease, a terminal illness but that hasnt stopped chris from making bigg plans. Bigg stands for big ideas for the greater good. A few months ago he challenged the kids in his community to come up with something bigg. Then videotape it for a Grand Theater premiere. Its got to be unique, right . You cant go give out dough knits. Thats been done. Some guy already did that. Chris thought of the first bigg idea which was to give away thousand of donuts to cancer wards, childrens hospitals. He had so much fun doing this he is now pretty much devoted the rest of his life to encouraging others to commit similar acts. Lets just have fun making people smile. And so with the toast of a donut, the bigg premiere got underway. One video was called wheel of kindness some kids set this up giant wheel at a mall, had grown ups spin then do whatever kind thing it handed on. Like hug ten random strangers. Another video got adults to rediscover the joy of coloring. While another, conceived by these two kids was about their idea to take some homeless women out for a once in a lifetime fancy dinner. Ive never seen such an act of kindness from a total stranger. I cried. I cried. What a legacy chris is creating. Hes hoping this will become an annual event whether hes here to see it or not. Now, next year i want bigger. And that is one of the most Amazing Things about him. A lot of people fay on a cause when diagnosed with a terminal illness. But its usually to cure their own disease, chris on the other hand isnt as interested in fighting als as he is in healing all of us. Make me love it. Robin williams [ cheering and applause ]. The opportunity to be in the presence of brilliance, lucky when that happens. The fact that he was one to share that was very important. In his passing i realized how important that was. Where it all came from seemed a mystery even to Robin Williams himself. He started early as an only child growing up in detroit. Remembering the last scene, out there at 4 00 in the morning naked. Im not doing that. Comedy or drama it didnt matter. He found a home in both. Bringing a smile even to oscar in goodwill hunting. When you get to perform as an actor you get to explore behavior and totally different beings than yourself which is wonderful. But the humanity in his performances, that sense of decency he displayed in films like patch adams was by almost every account no act. The generosity of his spirit was as boundless as his talent. And that youll hear it a thousand times and its true that you dont see people as generous as robin was. Robin never said no. He never made it difficult. A lot of the other stars we had to chase. What if i take two . His troubles were constant companions on stage and off. You see as alcoholic you will violate your standards quicker than you can lower them. You will do bleep even the devil would go, dude just three years ago williams talked about how life seemed to be Getting Better with age. Just look back just go, hey, this just enjoy it. Theres know rush. Just sit back say, this is all gratitude for days. Like, wow, this is a great life. His wife released a statement thursday that said williams sobriety was intact. But revealed that he was suffering from the early stages of parkinsons disease. President of the United States of america. I have no idea what that means. Several projects, including the latest installment of night at the museum have yet to be released. So hes not done making us laugh. Not yet. Robin williams has been described as a manchild. Thats fitting perhaps because he played just such a role in the film jack where as rapidly aging boy, his end, prophetically, came that are too fast. And when shooting stars streak through the blackness turning night in to day, make a wish and think of me. And make your life spectacular. I know i did. [ man ] but what about when my parents visit . Is folgers in your cup looking for a summer drive thats cool in every respect. Lets ride with Connor Knighton has taken him full circle. This summer marks the 40th anniversary of the completion of icelands route 1. Better known as the ring road. The 828 loop encircles the entire country, meaning you could technically drive around iceland in a day. In the summer, youd still have plenty of daylight left over. The sun doesnt set until close to midnight and this is about as dark as iceland gets. But youd really need a week to take it all in. The ring road is one of the most scenic drives in the world. Just off the highway there are roaring waterfalls, mossy lava fields, sunny seaside cliffs, eerie glacial lagoons, bubbling, teaming earth. Iceland feels like another planet. In the 1960s apollo astronauts trained for Lunar Missions on icelands rocky landscape. The country has since become a favorite of scifi and fantasy film makers. The recent owe live i dont know and prometheus were shot in iceland. It is and featured prominently in game of thrones. The ring road just a little stretch of twolane black top connects most of icelands major attractions and towns. Like you know what im not even going to try to say them. Is he planning on making a run for the top job himself in two years time . Richard schlesinger sat down for some questions and answers. I believe in what i call the american idea which a lot of people talk about which is the condition of your birth and determine outcome of your life. He may or may not like to hear this. But paul ryan sure looks and sounds and writes like hes running for president. Hes out with a new book the way forward. The title could be a campaign slogan. The. The whole purpose of this book to to say, i also dont like the direction the countrys going so what leaders ought to do is say, here is how to do things differently. Its the store rear of a small town guy with big ideas and his journey from the sandbox to the spotlight. That begins in his hometown, janesville, wisconsin. This is a very height opportunity of people who look out for each other. Help each other when theyre having a problem. Ryan is 44 now has been in congress for almost eight terms. His upbringing ingansville has become part of his political story. In his book, he talks about having to grow up quickly after discovering his father dead in the house from a heart attack. Ryan was just 16. Sort of at that moment i decided that im going to either sink or swim. Im going to step it up, be there for my mom, mi grandma not wallow in self pity because of the unexpected death of my dad. Shortly after that ryan won one of his first elections as junior class president at this high school, if thats not all american enough, he also became prom king. Along the way, he picked up another title, brown noser. That he doesnt talk about too much. You proud of the brown noser title . Doesnt really matter. Youre a good sport, though. Yeah. My family has been in this town for five generations in. His time in congress and as the romney running mate, ryan has become known as a wonk, whos at home in the weeds of economic policy. This bill does not control cost. Does not reduce deficit. His perch as chairman of the House Budget Committee has been his stage from which to sound warnings about debts and deficits and the perilous future he sees if both are not controlled. Lets focus on the part of the budget that we depend on so much that is going bankrupt lick these entitlement programs that weve organized our lives around. Ryan is frequently blasted for not being specific about what he would cut and reform. But in his book he recounts the fights hes had over the years, overbroad ideas like allowing younger people to invest their Social Security taxes in private, regulated accounts. Lets for a moment talk about medicare. And providing seniors with federal money to help them pay for medicare or a private plan of their choice. What he calls premium support. This saves medicare. Many democrats say thats just a way to cut benefits. That idea inspired this attack ad in 2011 featureing a sortof look alike ryan and a very real looking granny. Hes had few victories but he still sees progress, especially on his medicare idea. We havent actually finished it yet, meaning gotten it done to save medicare but normalizessed this idea from something very controversial to constructive bipartisan solution. So this is how i like moving issues which is get the conversation started, apply your principles, show a solution, normalize it and then try and get it done. Ryan may be over estimating the bipartisanship of medicare reform but he did become the leading republican voice in the argument over entitlement programs and deficit. Every year of this where were a trillion dollars in debt. Hes pointing fingers at the democrats naturally, also at his fellow republicans. What i saw was party that lost its principles, left its moorings and looked like a Hypocritical Party that said that they were fit for fiscal conservatism but didnt do it. Ryan voted for hundreds of billions ever dollars in bailouts for the Banking Industry and auto industry. And for a costly medicare expansion. Do you blame yourself in part for some of the problems that you identify . Sure. I think you need to own some of the outcome of these things for sure. I call that defensive voting, because as legislator you really dont really get to vote for what you want to vote for, some times if you vote no, that can make worse things happen. Ryan has been preaching the gospel of lower debt and deficits since before he was elected to congress. But hes had a devil of a time convincing critics who say hes being unrealistic and unfair to the poor. Congressman paul ryan. [ applause ] ryan attracted some more criticism and some praise for his latest proposal how we can repair the safety net and help families get ahead. Its a plan to turn control over the war on poverty and the money for it to the states. Why do you think states can do better job than federal government . You think things are working well now . Have you ever been to the dmv. In some states it does. States can fix it. Of course ryan cant propose anything these days without people wondering if he will run for president. Are you running for president . I have no idea. Come on. I ve heard you say that. I really dont. I think youre an honorable man but i dont believe you. This hear you say that. Here is the way my mind works. I dont roll out of bed thinking what can i do to become president. I dont think like that. My wife, jana. Got a taste of what a egg National Campaign feels like in 2012. Congressman, dont hit me for asking this question. Are you ready to do it again . Shes not going to answer that. You want to do it again . I dont know. Well wait and see. And that is as close as any of the ryans will get to answering that particular question.
