Check this out, down the bay area, its been quiet there with only the gusty winds and now the rain is filling in as well. This is it. This is what we have been tracking since friday and this is the center of the core of the area of low pressure well defined were going to have unstable air mass through friday triggering showers. This plume of moisture is going to cause the heaviest rainfall. And then gradually into the peninsula and the south bay until 3 p. M. Behind it, once that front passes, a lot of moderate to light rainfall behind it still. Because this is subtropical in nature, we have very loud temperatures in the mid60s and currently 68 degrees. Its 68 in livermore. The winds have been gusting at 17 Miles Per Hour. 40 Miles Per Hour in berkeley. Gusty winds along the bridges these are sustained winds. These are damaging winds. Thats why we have a highwind warning in effect today and were talking about 80mileperhour winds and plus that in the highest elevations of the bay area. You couple them with the rain amounts. 9inches of rain in 24 hours. Highest elevations of the north bay. 24inches across the urban areas, one of the latest models suggests that we will see 2inches of rain between 7 00 a. M. And 9 00 a. M. Thats on top of the 10inches that fell last week we. We have a flash watch for today. Todays numbers, into the 60s. Scattered showers tomorrow. Drying out, assess the damage on saturday and sunday before we introduce more rain showers into the forecast on monday through wednesday. Thats our eye on the storm. Eye on traffic with elizabeth. I believe this is what they were alluding to, it suggested in the city of San Francisco between 7 00 and 9 00, well see two full inches of rain this is the area of low pressure, this is the powerful storm out of the pacific that were talking and tracking since last friday. The National Weather service has just issued a Flash Flood Warning heavy rainfall, when you see the areas of red, thats a very heavy downpour and it could produce up to an inch of rain per hour we have heavy rainfall throughout the north bay since 3 00 this morning. Its now sliding to the south. San francisco, south San Francisco hit with heavy rainfall. East bay, youve been hearing the wind now we have the rain entering the 680 corridor. This is the big picture, this is a powerful pacific storm this was the core way back here what were appearancing is here. Its tapping into the tropical moisture and it goes back into the Hawaiian Islands. Right now, the main event in the north bay, it has been since 3 00 this morning. Everything shifting into the central bay and east bay. It will worsen as the day progresses this front is powerful. Look at the temperatures, its 68 degrees in livermore, but boy, the rain is blowing sideways 40 in fremont, 44 in the bay after experiencing wind gusts earlier. Behind that slice, that frontal boundary, the winds dial back. Now at 11, the winds lessen in the north and central bay up to 20 Miles Per Hour meanwhile, we have the high wind warning in place we will see downed trees and over 80mileperhour winds nine inches of rain in 24 hours. Thats a lot of water all at once. There is flooding taking place in the north bay. There will continue to be flooding. 24inches expected across the bay area. 7 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Thats why we have a Flash Flood Watch in effect before the entire bay area. Some sunshine that will be most welcomed over the weekend. Increase in cloud cover on sunday will lead to the potential of a minor storm system bringing more showers monday through wednesday. The north bay is take degrees brunt of the big storm. Braving the elements. Reporter it has not let up for a minute. Im in downtown, im on the sidewalk and im standing now in about 45 inches of water. Walking down the sidewalk, you can see varying levels you dont know whats under you on the sidewalk. Im not going on to the roadway where we saw a truck pass through. Public works is letting people know this is flooded and some decide to gun it and go on through the water and everybodys made it so far, others decided to turn around. At the Hardware Store, they were prepared for this. Another truck is going to make the attempt. You can see a little closer how deep the water is now. Its over the top of the wheel wells thats a powerful truck. Its swimming now. As i said, its not let up for a minute since about 3 3 00 p. M. Here in downtown. If it continues, its hard to tell how deep it could get. She said it got almost this bad last week. It shows no sign of flooding. The great highway is closed between highway 35, high winds is blowing sand on to the highway. There are many schools in the bay area that decided to close today because of the weather. From the south bay, 2800 customers out and for Santa Cruz County and the mountains, we have a combined about 5100 customers out at this point. What are you doing now to make sure that the power gets restored to them . We have crews working and working as safely as possible. At this point, its due to the conditions the crews are working through theyre working and will work around the clock as quickly as they can. We do have extra crews and resources working to restore outages we prestaged personnel at base camps located throughout the area to quickly respond to trouble as it comes as the storm passes through, well dispatch from the less impacted region to assist. We have mutual agreements and contract crews as well. We have all crews on our standby and responding as they occur and working as safely as that can with the number of outages and the conditions. Again, we cant set those firm estimate this is morning. What about advice for those who dont have power and might be using a flash flight, what can you tell them . We would like to remind folks, safety first. Safety is a priority. We would like to remind folks, if you experience an outage, try not to use candles for a light source if possible. Use batteryoperated flashlights. If you have to use candles, keep them away from christmas trees, anything that could start a fire. Also, one helpful tool, if you have not experienced an outage, try to freeze gallon containers like a milk jug or container of water which has moved through and that can help keep your food safe from spoiling at least a little bit longer. One thing that is important, we always remind folks, if you come across a downed power line, treat it as if it is live. Never come in contact with the lines. Keep children, pets and others away. Youre going to have some pretty heavy downpours to the next 1015 minutes highdef indicating some good news, this is the tail end of the front that has been pounding the north bay, when you see the lighter shades of green, that is the case, a more moderate to light rainfall. Were seeing a break throughout the area. This is the frontal boundary. This is what is impacting us now. Its all the way back to the islands, tapping into the moisture. We have some much rain falling at once. By 9 00, you see a lot of people just breathing a sigh of relief well have some light rainfall but the heaviest across the central portion of the bay and the eastern portion. We have a break over the weekend before we introduce a new storm. If theres any good news in this, we have not seen any major accidents or slowdowns this morning. There are far fewer cars on the roads. Thats helping a lot. The rain really coming down now in San Francisco its causing a pretty massive widespread power outage from the Marina District to the financial district. The bart station is closed. Trains are just running straight through if you need to get off through there, you can use the powell street station instead. Heres a look at the Golden Gate Bridge, ferries are on schedule right now. If youre hitting the road on 101, the reports of flooding, overall, looks okay. Travel advisories in affect for the high winds. Avoid the Richmond Santa fe bridge. Theyre saying to use 37 or the 101 even though its a long way around. The city of novato says its given out an unprecedented number of sandbags over the past 36 hours as people were prepping for the storm they gave out about 4,000 sandbags they ran out of sand for a little while, they now have more, but hopefully youre prepared at this point. You can see how deep the water is getting. You can see it on this block and one block up, the main drag here in downtown novato, you would have no idea how shady things are getting in some of the other neighborhoods. Thats live right now. You think of a freeway that might have 4 lanes normally and now its reduced down to 2 lanes that reduces the accessibility. They are saying now that if your flight is canceled, your best bet is to stay home and enjoy it from the comfort of your own home were not running into a lot of people with canceled flights, but delayed flights, from 45 minutes up to 3 hours here. You can see the 586 corridor now starting to see the leading edge of the frontal boundary and that continues to sag in a southerly direction. Some has asked has this slowed down, that is good news because if its stalls over the bay area, thats when you start to see even additional rainfall. Ahead of that front, the wind speeds this morning, excess of 55 Miles Per Hour throughout the urban areas, above 80mileperhour wind gusts, we have seen 100 100 in the sierra. It did rise with the one day storm that blue through the area. What were experiencing today is a oneday storm which is scattered showers moving through on the backside of the front, this area of low pressure is going to produce up to 9inch of rain in the mountainous areas, easily, 24inches across most urban areas. Its developing now. You mentioned and jose has light to moderate rain. They will get hit the. A lot of people have warnings and kids at home. A lot of people stayed home because its ugly out there. We would like to see some pictures we will see pictures from folks taking shots. But lets go over to liz now and find out how were doing. Not bad today. The roads have been relatively okay. We understand there is still a high wind advisory in effect for the Richmond San Raphael bridge. Theyre asking big rigs and high profile vehicles not to use these bridges. Theyre asking them not to drive on the san raphael bridge. Its an advisory not a mandate. You still have big rigs and high profile vehicles using this bridge as we speak. Lets show you video we shot this morning. This was around 3 00 in the morning, a large eucalyptus tree actually fell down on highway 180. They had to shut down all lanes in the eastbound direction. They were able to move the downed tree out quickly. They were able to reopen traffic to the eastbound direction around 5 45. Thats the good news. Lets come on back now live. We have a couple of systems, last week and with this strong storm system, we do expect quite a few downed trees throughout the east bay and perhaps throughout the bay area. But, again, i mean this is actually pretty light compared to what we saw about 30 minutes ago. Now, its okay. Just because the wind gusts basically died down. Were going it take you across that bridge now, over to downtown novato. Its hard to tell where the sidewalk is and where the roadway starts. It was a difficult time for this woman to get into her car. Watch how she checks out how deep the flooding is there. She made it inside her car. If youre planning to head out, its wet and lots of rain and noding to deal without flooding to deal without there. If youre planning to go northbound on highway 101 check out lucky drive and remarks bother, theres a lot of storms. Theyll keep getting rain coming down on the row ways. The roadways. San bruin know station san bruno station closed due to flooding. Trains are not stopping in montgomery. You have to get off at em bar codare owe. Thats right. Did a lot of folks just stay home today. We havent had a chance to look at the ridership just yet. Were focusing on keeping the trains moving. What should people know who may be heading out to work right now and they want to take bart, what should they know . The absolute thing to keep in mind is to build in extra time for your commute so when you get to the bart station youre not running in there and potentially trying to catch a train and slip. The trains are delayed because of the rain and it will take longer to get your destination. Tell us about the two stations san bruno and montgomery station, when will they be running again . One is electricity, pg e is trying to restore power, but weve got our own crews trying to get a generator that will provide emergency lighting. As far as san bruno is concerned, we have pumps that are loaded on vehicles that we can send to try to pump out areas. Its difficult to predict when flooding has been mitigated. Okay. Theyre going to have to close the embarcadaro, from at t park out to pier 39 because of Flooding Issues and stuff. Were getting word of that within the last few seconds here. I put up a tweet moments ago from kcbs, there are major flooding in market, mission, freemont and howard streets. Obviously, the embarcadero as well. A joke is made over the waterfront property. You have to be careful through parts of the city. We have flooding on southbound 280, apparently all lanes are under a lot of ponding. You can see the delays now heading into that area, backed up all the way along that corridor. 101 is not a lot better. Im getting word of flooding at oyster point and again closer to candlestick park. Well continue to watch it all for you. In the meantime roberta is tracking the storm where it is next. Here she is. The storm was poised and positioned to move into the bay area. It began to peculiar up steam and slice through the north bay. Look at our doppler radar. Well see a breakin the northern portions of the bay area. Look at all the yellow and orange, thats moderate to heavy rain. When you see red, thats an inch to an inch and a half falling per hour. And 880, you have treacherous travel and all this continues to dig that southerly fashion. Look at this extend all the way across the peninsula from redwood city and all this is dipping towards the palo alto area, and Mountain View area youll get smacked hard in the next 15 to 20 minutes. This is the north bay. This is an improving situation. We have pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall. Petaluma, novato, napa, im talking with the Weather Service, theyre going to issue a support whether we expect the napa river to reach flood stage. You see this area of green, this is the backside of the frontal boundary that continues to slice in a southerly direction. Were seeing a bit of a break with the north side of the bay. However, this is a mammoth situation as far as this area of low pressure is concerned. Were taking up a lot of real estate. This is the koran center of the area of low pressure. It looks like a big giant comma. We could not see that yesterday. We see a cotton ball effect. That leaves unstable air mass. That will trigger showers on friday. Right now what were dealing with this is right here. Thats that frontal boundary right here in windsor. This is moving in the bay area and continues in the southerly direction. As it does, the heaviest rainfall in the north bay is moving towards San Francisco. Its moving across the peninsula and the a portion of the bay area. Youre experiencing your worse weather right now, up to the lunch hour with gusty winds up to 50 Miles Per Hour in the urban areas. South bay youre experiencing the worst weather until 1 00 this afternoon. When i say worse weather, youll have light rain showers at the back end and at times heavy rain. Right now the air mass is so juicy with tropical moisture, but where the rain is moving into the city of San Francisco, we have 59 degrees. The other side of this story happens to be the very gusty winds and sustained winds as well. 39 Miles Per Hour in redwood city, 36 in san ramon, 36 in sonoma and American Canyon area. And novato down to 3 now. Santa rosa again, kind of a flat wind at 11 Miles Per Hour. Berkeley has winds up to 37. These are damaging winds. Down come the trees, down come the power lines and we have the high wind warning in effect for tonight. Futurecast clearly illustrates as we tally up the rainfall totals we should see 9 inches of rain in the highest areas, the north bay and the coastal range. 2 to 4 inches of rain in our urban areas. We could see two inches of rain between 7 00 and up to 9 00 minutes from now. Well wait to see those rainfall totals. 7 inches of rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We have a Flash Flood Warning in effect for many of our local counties as well as a Flash Flood Watch. Theres flooding taking place just about everywhere. A advisory in place today. Its breaking up to 25 feet. Thats why there are closures at the embarcadero. Heavy rain taking off to showers tonight. The wind will decrease from 10 to 20. Well have a dry day on saturday and sunday before we introduce increasing clouds sunday night from monday through wednesday. Not a sun ball in there. A little peekaboo sunshine.
