Aielleb b but i have a question when was the largest krou crowd gathered in San Francisco history . Ill give you a hint 500,000. 500,000. That day was in 1971, at the polo field, 500,000 fields to do what . Pray the rose re re rasary, catholics, and i think we just have an aerial shot of that event. Its incredible. 500000 people gathered to pray the rosary and spend some time in the tradition. And were going to talk about the rosary rally, and were going to talk about the rosary rally in San Francisco. The key note speaker, and our beloved archbishop, father col corteleone. Im not even sure if founding is the correct word, but he is a missionary priest, and we cant wait to talk about with him. The emcee of the rosary rally coming up. Well be right back. Eri. Here, we have our guest, father joseph illo, and is father of the sea parish on gary boulevard, gary boulevard, not gary street. Yeah. And i appreciate that. Father, were going to talk about the rosary rally at least about in 1971, but there is he a question if you actually were there at the rosary rally in 19671, but we have a couple of dates, send us an email at sfarchdioce 1ed dico 1ed dico diocese. Com. Father, how long have you been here . I just got here on august 1st. Youre the administrator of the parish, father of the sea, and also the orator, father of the sea. There are about 70 of these in the country, in the world right now. Okay. Wonderful. Lets find out, star of the sea parish as an administrator, what does that mean . Are you a pastor, will they ever making make you a past aur. Administrator is kind of a protection time probation time, but the if i become past aur, it would be after in karpb incargnation, what does that mean . Its full membership in the diocese, full commitment. Okay. In the meantime, youre taking care of the skwraft oral needs past oral needs. And i believe i saw on your website, starof thechurchsf. Com, the thing i like about it is you offer rere confession before that. We started doing that, and the confession lines have tkpwroupb grown. We have 15 times now we can go to confession a week, so obviously, people are making use of that. Its wonderful just to know that you have that available. Some days sometimes, people get sometimes, its a very real need to go to confession we understand that, but sometimes, theres an inspiration, but they look, and its not saturday, but if they were able to know that its available its also a onestop shopping. You come to mass, you can also prepare for mass by going to confession before mass. Now, tell us a little bit about oratory just briefly describe the oratory before the last segment. It comes from the word for prayer, a oracio, and it was founded in the 1500s by st. Philip, in rome. It was a band of brothers it comes from a band of brothers living together. We have at least one prayer a day together, we have discussion on the scriptures once or twice a week. We also have that support or that strength in our fraternity together. Well, thank you, and we can talk a little bit more about what that means and how that looks, but its a wonderful thing. A lot of folks just assume that thats what priests do all the time, but theres so many challenges that priests do when theyre starting a parish. Lets talk about the 2013 rosary rally. I think we have a picture of the archbishop leading the rally, and Bishop Justice near him, this is a tradition thats reanimated in San Francisco. U. N. Plaza will have been the rose rosary rally. Of the last year, there was a huge concession of people that gathered for the rally. Most likely, youre going to be able to find some follow up information about this years rosary rally. Father apostole is also a speaker. You may recognize him in the images. There he is, right there, and a priest of the franciscan priors of the renewal, but lets talk about the rally back 500000 strong. You know, its a very amazing thing to recognize in Golden Gate Park theres another aerial view, these are apparently, from what i understand, the streets lined with Police Officers in their dress uniforms, ushering them poured towards ts polo fields. Hes the priest that says the family that prays stogt stogt together, stays together, but thats the priest, father patrick payton. It still goes onto ministering act ors and families in actors and families in hollywood. Of the other thing that father patrick said, a world at prayer is a worley at peace. I want to talk to you about the rosary rally, do you remember that . Sure. Im a cradle catholic, youngest born of six kids. I remember my mother taught us the day my mother taught us to pray the rosary. She gave us our own rosarys. I thought it was the coolest thing that i had a little chapman el in my pocket. I went all over, i kept it in my pocket all the time. Teen years, i forgot the rosary. You know, you forgot you dont pray at at as much, and i rediscover it had in a retreat in california when i was 17 years old, and been praying it every day since, been praying it every day since that time, but my mother. Mothers do that. I think thats the case. Thank you, mom. Mayor that, and mary, who is our mother. And i would imagine that youve seen some of the effects just from the spiritual fruit and the power of the rosary in your life. Well, the tkpwraeft tkpwra graduatest feeling is that you have a home on earth and a home in heaven that youre waiting to come from. But i am ive seen one healing, praying the rosary, a lung young lady, she had cancer, and she had about a month to live. We prayed the rosary, and did the a tphoeupbting in the annointing. And about a month later, the father came to me and said father, how can i thank you . I said what . He said, the cancer it gone. Now, what was it . But we always pray the rosary in hospital rooms, its one of the most healing, both for the spirit, for the mind, and the body. Amen. If youre watching this right now, maybe theres an rosary maybe somewhere in a drawer in your house, go get it, and pray again from the heart. Well talk about the need for rosary in this world and in prayer. Im here, talking about father joseph illo, father of the past aurof the father of the sea oratory here in San Francisco. Hello. My name is chris leifert. Im from the arch di dihe ses diocese. My guest today is father joseph illo, the emcee of the rally. When we look back, looking at this rosary rally, the idea of praying the rosary in general, the need for prayer in general, and the world, what are the hopes that you have for the promug promulgation, the encouragement, for families to pray the rosary. It must be the strength of the family. The rosary is essentially a familiar prix prayer. Ill tell you a story of a single mother and three children in my last parish were having a crisis. She calls me, at 10 00 at night. She says, come over, and help me with this prop. I said, not a good idea. Pray the rosary, and call me in the morning and tell me what happened. Her son had a knife, she was praying the rosary. He stormed off, went into his room, she and her other kids prayed the rosary, she said the next morning, it brought peace to the situation, whatever it was. So renewal of life. The children of our world are our hope, and i think weve kind of given up on that hope in many ways, and rosary can help renew that hope. Lets talk about the rosary itself. What are some of the myths that we should dispel about the rosary itself. First of all, its that we are worshipping the mother mayor mary. Its spwoeul symbol that hopefully stirs our heart to real prayer. Another myth that might be the rosary is a magic possession or miracle working. Spell. Spell or something, but every response that god grants us, a spwofl our faith, and it renews our trust in god. Yeah, and what the rosary actually is, they are our father, the creed, the aeupbg angelic they dont quite understand our understanding of intersession, or asking for saints intersession for us, if you could talk about that. Is and certainly, the rosary can be abused, just like any religious practice, but it was profoundly bible bible biblical. And the st. S to inter seed for us. We pray intercede for us. Those that are with him in heaven, are closer to him than we are, so why wouldnt we ask them for prayers, as well. What wouldnt be closer to jesus than his mother, so theres no harm in asking for another person to pray for us. We all do it. Why should death be a kphoepb barrier of commune i dont know to communion for st. S. Were all in this world together. How about the world in general . Our whole society . John paul ii wrote a document on the rosary in 20020 2002, called the rosary of the virgin inmary. He says there are two things about the rosary number one, family, number two, peace. Father payton said famously, a world at prayer and a world at is a world at peace, and i think if everybody prayed from the scriptures, there would be no war, there would be no school shootings, so the more we come back to that, the more peaceful we will be as individuals and as a world. He amen to that, and as this is airing, tomorrow, the 13th of october, 2014 is the 97th anniversary of the america fatima. You can google it, but you i by i think we mate even have some images. I im not sure if we have any fatima images. A lot of people tphoeu know, a lot of catholics know our lady of fatima. Tomorrow, anniversary of the day of the sun. Probably a good day to pray one hale marry hail mary, or to pray the whole rosary, to make a commitment. It showed people in fatima that god exists. He loves us, and this was in the throes of the world war, of the first world war, that has continued to lead to the destablisation of the world since then, and so what did fatima say . Pray, pray, pray; pray more, and if we pray more, we will have more peace. Father joseph, next, when we come back, were going to talk about the oratory, or the oratory in process, and were looking forward to that. Im speaking with father joseph illo, with father of the sea parish in San Francisco francisco San Francisco. Well be right back. Welcome to mos 5eud c. Today, weve been talking about the rosary, and the rosary rally of 2014, which just has occurred, as youre watching this, on saturday, u. N. Plaza. Were talking about prayer, prayer for peace and renewal in the church, and my guest today is father joseph illo, who chaired the rosary rally. Id like to ask you, father i illo, youre the administrator of the paeufr paeufr parish there, but i think the real thing that is of significance and important, is youre helping to found and or atori of st. Philip neri. Priests 20, 30 years ago would live communally. They would pray together, east together, and take recreation together, but that has all gone by the wayside as we have fewer priests; and also the secularizing trend within the church, priests dont jenrry generally pray together, so this is one way of priests getting back to that communal life, so we pray morning and evening together, we eat dinner tot together, we pray the rosary together. Often, we walk on the priest, we usually wear, clericals, people are waving at us, thank is thanking us for praying. We have not gotten one negative reaction to our public prayer. The oratorians have a different offertory. Youre not on the matrix, youre on the real matrix. Yeah, we are on the real matrix, and that strengthens the priest so we can better serve the people, but its making us better priests all around. And of course, this is an experience that youre aware of, that communal living. Whats the hopedfor product or fruit of this lived lifestyle, the oratory. In general, the oratory is designed to support priestly live, but in particular, arch bishop corleone has asked us to focus on two things, the sacredness of the lit you are gee, and bring out liturgy. Second thing he had hes asked us for is to research out to young adult, youth, young adults, young family. Children are really the hope of our world, hope, meaning a future aspiration. That next generation is our hope. San francisco has the lowest percap at that children to adult ratio of any city in america, and so essentially, theyve given up on that hope, and we hope to bring more vitality within the younger ages. Yeah, hope, hope, thats the word. Yeah. Hope is in. And especially in the young young adult life, the challenge is that in order to continue existing or paying the rent, and eating, theres so much work that has to happen; and yet, you see ways to get into even the home, even to the life of this fastpaced world, aoupbg even as young families, what are some of the things that youre hoping. We start with the holy mass, the liturgy. The practical thing is weve got our doors open during business hours, on gary boulevard. Theres parking in the back. Theres parking in the back, and then, making the mass very beautiful will draw people from the movie theaters its okay to watch movies. Sure, but if we never do anything than what this world offers. Other worldly. Yeah. Thats the feeling. So to make the church a sanctuary, a refuge from the flatness of mad modern live life, i think that will draw people in. And the other thing is weve been going on the streets, and thats drawing a lot of progression. As i mentioned, confession. Confessions are before every mass. Philip neri was the member of this congregation. He loved salary attitude, and i actually sol attitude solitude, and he built a little retreat on the roof of his church. But he wanted it to be so accessible, he left a key on his stoop, so anybody could come in day or night, and ask for a confession. So the confession or mass, really, its the standard protocol. And i imagine theres going to be a doorbell in your rectory or maybe not. Weve been talking about father joseph illo, father of the sea, theres masses all through the week, and spiritual direction, encouragement, and opportunities to leave this world for the moment. Youve been watching mosaic. My names chris leifert. Well see you next time. Looking for one of these . Yoplait. Smooth, creamy, and craved by the whole family. Ring ring .
