Welcome to mosaic. Today we will learn about the roman churches celebration of the year of mercy. Going on now through november 20. Im angela pollock, with the archdiocese of San Francisco. Joining me today is father mark daugherty, a parochial preacher at the San Francisco Mission District and at Sacred Heart Cathedral high school in San Francisco. Father mark or entered the jesuit order in 2000. In 2014, he was ordained a priest and the archdiocese of San Francisco. Since 2000 come he has served in many human life pastoral capacities including work at shelters and crisis counseling. Father mark has taught history in high School Including catholic and will be speaking at local venues across the archdiocese during the year of mercy. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. Glad to be here. Would you tell us about the year of mercy . Just in general, what it is about. A jubilee year comes around every so often. It is clear that pope francis is declaring a special jubilee year of mercy for this year. It is clear that the theme of mercy stands out to him as an Important Message for the Universal Church and for the whole world. I think to get a sense of why you dont have to look too far. Owing need to do first is look at the first lengthy interview he gave shortly after being elected to the chair of peter. You will know that pope francis is a jesuit, of the society of jesus it is no surprise that the first lengthy interview he gave was to the leading jesuit publication in italy. At the very beginning of the interview, the editor, asked the pontiff who is pope francis . Who is jorge maria . And the popes answer was, jorge maria is a center that has experience to the mercy of god. I think that tells us everything we need to know about the motivation pope francis has about the year of mercy. Mercy has been a paramount experience in his own life. And he would like to invite everyone around the world all christians around the world all men and women of goodwill, to experience a new mercy of god. That is fantastic. And what you think that means to be a missionary of mercy . To be a missionary of mercy first we have to zero in a little bit on the idea of mercy. It is a simple word. But we can get caught up in wondering exactly what that means. I think the first thing that stands out about mercy for pope francis in his mind and in his heart, is the experience of being sought out by a loving parent. By the loving father that wants to bring his children home. Pope francis speaks on occasion with a powerful experience he had as a young man going into the confessional making a confession and literally experiencing the touch of god. Experiencing the mercy of god. Experiencing the embrace of god. First and foremost, when we speak about the mercy of god, experiencing the mercy of god being a participant in the mercy of god, we are talking about the image of a father whos running after his child running after his children, to bring them home. I think for example, i think of a poem of the 19th century speaking of the hound of heaven revving running up and down the labyrinth in an effort to come after his children and bring them home. I think that speaks to the fundamental question of the human spirit. At the heart of our spirit, is the question am i worth it . Do i matter . And the experience of the mercy of god is the answer i am worth it to god. I matter to god. God seeks me out. In an effort to embrace me and bring me home. That is the first thing we have to say about mercy. When youre talking, it reminds me of that rembrandt image of the prodigal son. I remember very well that inaugural message from pope francis and have that resonated so deeply with people around the world. And that image comes to mind of you have that on the screen that beautiful embrace of the father and bringing out of that love to everyone. What do you think that pope francis has talked a lot about this year the year of mercy being important for the family. What do you think this means . That mercy . How does that connect to the family . I think it is no surprise that when they do surveys about what is the favorite parable in the gospels time and again, people rate the parable of the prodigal son as their favorite story in the gospel precisely because it speaks to the deepest desires of the human heart to be a member of the family to be long two counts to be worth it. We have this Beautiful Image of a loving father who is embracing his son son who is clearly strayed and wandered in all sorts of ways. But a father who comes no less and embraces him to bring him home. It speaks to the fundamental desire to be members of the family. Pope francis directs us to this theme all the time the theme of the family. He stressed it on the family of room that we have heard so much about. Nunnally there that he has done that in little ways. He has gathered on occasion at st. Peters square a multiple multitude of engaged couples and has come out and given them advice about marriage. In his last he has gone on in so many ways to speak about the world as our home. And the fact that all of the men and women and children who inhabit the world are members of the family. And therefore we bear the responsibility of looking out for one another and for our mutual common home. I think pope francis is is consistently speaking to the theme of family because he knows that it touches the deepest desires of aspirations of the human heart. I love what you said about the global family. Because it is so true. Even people we have not met we all have weaknesses and we all need one another. None of us is the perfect perfect package. I think the holy father is trying to speak to one of the concerns of our contemporary era. We so often hear about this individualistic message you have to be your own person. The holy father comes back and says no. You are not sufficient to yourself. In order to flourish or to become the man or woman you are meant to be, you need each other. In fact, that is where we get a deeper sense of the scope of mercy. Mercy, and its fullest sense, is not only experiencing a loving father who comes to embrace me and welcomed me into the fall the full measure of mercy the mature measure of mercy is the experience of being in nobles by the father with a place in the family which means a share in the work of the family. So when you speak about being a missionary of mercy, what we are really speaking about first and foremost is being a recipient of mercy. Being invited into the work of the family. So that i belong in the family. And we can all look at the house being built and say, i helped to build that house. I helped to look out for my brothers and sisters in need. I help in constructing this beautiful family where everyone knows that they are worth it. And everyone belongs. I think that speaks really to the second question of the human heart. The first is, am i worth it . And my valuable enough to be counted . The second, am i capable . . M i thought well enough by my father and brothers and sisters to be interested with the share and the work . The lords mercy descends upon us and he and thousand each of us with a particular share and network. I think that is where this missionary mercy comes from. Thank you for that great overview of the year of mercy and being part of that global family. Right now we will take a quick break. With me today, his father mark daugherty, a priest for the archdiocese of San Francisco. Father mark, you beautifully talked about what they year of mercy means for the Universal Church. The church around the world. Lets turn our attention locally to the archdiocese which covers three counties. I know a lot of churches and a lot of nonprofit organizations across the bay area they are already living out the works of mercy. And they have been doing so for many years. But this year in particular they are really doing more as far as making intentional efforts to engage more people in those works of mercy and invite people to not only experience mercy but to share and extend that mercy to others. They just had a beautiful concert for Syrian Refugees a couple of weeks ago which was fantastic. I know a lot of the local nonprofits were getting together joining forces to help the homeless with the el nino. With all of this wonderful work going on. And i would love for us to talk a little bit more about some of these activities here in the archdiocese of San Francisco do you want to share some of the things happening here in the archdiocese . The first thing we said when we speak about the more when pope francis speaks about the more what he is referring to is this famous jesuit expression of course pope freshness pope francis is a jesuit. God is always going out further and further in an effort to do more to express his love for his people. Of course that becomes our mission to do more. More doesnt mean reinventing the wheel. We look at Pope Franciss Life Experience it wasnt as this when he was the pope the archbishop in buenos aires he was looking at himself and saying are there particular communities particular individuals who are in special need of experiencing this loving touch of god . He would take a step back and look around. Then he would engage. He would go out to the poor sections of buenos aires and he would walk on foot through all of these alleyways in an effort to meet the people who rarely have a chance to see a priest. It is a call to take a step back, reexamined situation and reengage with greater vigor. In my parish us i think of our little neighborhood in the southeast part of the city in the Mission District on 24 street and alabama. That is for st. Peters is. And in Saint Anthonys in full sun. I pastor and i recently took a step back ourselves. We asked ourselves are there particular groups of people in our neighborhood who are in need of experiencing that mercy . It became clear to us with the Mother Teresa sisters who also worked in the neighborhood that of late, there is a growing community of Homeless People under the 101 freeway overpass. So we thought here is a local perfect opportunity we have looked back and stepped out and looked around. We have noticed there is a growing community of Homeless People under the freeway. We have gathered together members of the parish we have joined efforts with a charity. We formed a chapter of the st. Vincent Depaul Society which is a Charitable Organization of the church. We have started going down to the freeway overpass in the afternoons the parishioners primarily on sunday afternoons. We have gone out there and that the people. What happens is, we communicate to these folks that they matter. That they are worth it. That they belong. That they are members of the family. That they are loved by god. But not just by god but by us also. They are in our neighborhood members of our neighborhood and we care for them. That is a good example i would say, of an effort to take a step back, reengage and do more. You can see examples throughout the archdiocese. You mentioned this initiative for Syrian Refugees. We can look at these projects at Saint Boniface where they host the shelter. Which of course is very important during the winter months. They have extended the hours. It is now a daytime shelter. There is a cooperative venture between catholic communities and other Christian Communities and men and women of goodwill, to give greater access to shelter space, to those men and women who are in need of it. I know that our office of Restorative Justice is doing more and more in an effort to rally around the families and the communities. Victims who suffered violence. Just this past year in my neighborhood, one of our Young Children was murdered a couple blocks from my church. And the office of Restorative Justice was very helpful and constructive in bringing the community together. We would pray the rosary out there every night. In an effort to bring healing and peace in the neighborhood. We have all sorts of initiatives and the diocese that are not necessarily new but are taking this call from pope francis seriously to take a step back, examine the terrain and reengage with greater vigor. That is what we mean. There are so many ways that people here in the bay area can get involved. I know the mobile project is always looking for people who can create meals, donate goods that are needed. And there are so many other ways. There is st. Vincent depaul is having a book drive coming up across the bay to provide literature as well. There is just so many opportunities that people can engage in all of these wonderful works of mercy. Would you talk a little bit about the church often talks about the works of mercy and the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Would you say what those are . There is also the spiritual aspect. People can and can pray and engage in that way as well. Can you talk about the difference between those and how people can engage in that year of mercy that way . When we speak of the corporal works of mercy and the spiritual works of mercy, were coming back to the theme of the family. It happens to be the case in our world the way things are now that here and there, at different moments, this or that member of the family is in particular need either emotional need, spiritual need or material need. When we speak of emotional need i think for example, of those family members who have experienced a loss or a death for example. And they need the support of the community to come around and help them. Material need we have spoken about the homeless. It is always effort to go out and find those members of the family who are particularly in need at that moment and to speak to those needs. To respond to those needs in a loving and affectionate way. Father mark, i wonder if you could extend a personal invitation to all of our viewers, catholic and noncatholic, throughout the bay area. What would you want to say about this year of mercy . And inviting them to engage in it . I think first and foremost the thing to express is that all of us matter. All of us are beloved by god. And so the year of mercy is trying to extend to all men and women all christians and catholics that they matter to god. Which is why, among other reasons, and this year of mercy, pope francis has asked priests to make the sacrament of confession more readily available. We all know that saturday afternoon is often times, the not not the most ideal time for confession. So pope francis talks about his experience of going to confession as a young man and experiencing that particular loving touch of god. Pope francis really wants us priests to open the doors of our churches for confession. This year, priests all around the world i know my pastor and i will do this. We will find opportune and throughout the year to make confession available for longer durations of time. For the whole day if you will. Maybe even 24 hours at a time. So we take shifts of course. And make that available. Because the holy father again, has this idea that he wants people each in their own way, to experience that merciful loving touch of the father. We have all, in one way or another, straight from the family house. But the father comes after us to bring us home. Again, the image of the prodigal son being welcomed home by the father. So confession i would encourage catholics to go to confession. With this wonderful sacrament. I know that for me and my life, the sacrament of confession has been paramount. A great opportunity to experience a loving touch of god. From their of course, having experience to the mercy of god having sought the lord out for his experience and forgiveness. Mercy that fills the hearts with gratitude. And gratitude is always the energy that grace that turns us out of ourselves and gives us the desire the impetus to go out and share the wealth with others. To share this good news with others. So catholics, christians, men and women of goodwill can all for example, go on the archdiocese website find all of these ministries of service these missions of mercy that the archdiocese has engaged and a look through the list and find one or another that speaks to your heart. One of these ministries that prompt within you, a desire to share to be a missionary of mercy in your own way. We know that as st. Paul says, the body is composed of many parts. There for the gifts and talents given out to each one of us are different. We can each find our place in the family. We can each find a way to be missionaries of mercy. I would encourage our listeners and viewers to go on the website look at the list of all of the ministries and sign up. Find a way to help out. Find a way to allow yourself to be ennobled with the share of the work. God wants to extend the mantle of mercy to all of us. And part of that is the experience of sharing in the work of mercy being a missionary of mercy. Fantastic. You talked about how confession is so important to you. Could you share more about in a couple of minutes how have you personally experienced mercy . How has it transform your life . I have experienced it in this two foldaway. I remember when i was a Young College kid at the end of my first year of college rather disillusioned and not feeling very well thinking myself out of place and out of sorts i went to confession for the first time in a long time. I felt the merciful touch of the world. And it reoriented me. From there, all of a sudden the sky opened up. And this reality that god is there that god has a plan for life. That there is meaning to life that came upon me. And my vocation that call to Priestly Ministry came out. In my second year of college. It made all the difference in my life. I have experienced the mercy of god being ennobled with the gift of this vocation the location of priesthood. As a result, i have permanent tremendous peace and joy in my life as they work for the kingdom. Experience to this mercy in my life. Thank you so much. It has been wonderful chatting with you.
