I can tell you as as I experienced it I just finished building practice I came and the bat Normally I stay out in the outfield left field during filming practice for some reason this time came in as it turned out that was a lucky or 2 at this decision because the shooter was on the 3rd day side and if I'd been in the outfield and had no place to run the fencing around this particular field is about 10 feet high so there's no escape I did come in and I took some bats I put on a helmet I was on deck I took the 3rd base side of home plate where we had a batting cage which means I was pretty close to the shooter because he was just past the 3rd base dugout probably about 6070 maybe 80 feet away earn the 1st blam and at 1st I thought it was a car backfire and I looked around and I saw what appeared to be a stick like object poke and pretty close to the chain link fence shooting and it turned out to be a gun shooting and I agree angle towards the shortstop 2nd base right field positions it took me a fraction a 2nd about 3 more gunshots to figure out a couple things one answer gun 2 he's aiming to kill as many of us as a can and 3 if I can see him he can see me at this point I can see the shooter I could see the rifle and if he had turned 30 degrees to his right I'd have been the closest target for him to shoot at how far away he was he from you well I was already charging home plate and 3rd base probably 15 feet up the 3rd base line and he was probably even with 3rd base just past the 3rd base dugout when and when I returned say to the 3rd base dugout So whatever the math is on at 607080 feet I'm not even pretty gruesome details are writing. The reports are you fired as many as 50 shots. I would not be surprised if there were that many shots or more fired although once Capitol Police started engaging him you know his track of who's shooting which way but what I did immediately after I figured out that this was a shooter and that he was shooting at us and trying to kill us and keep in mind that this is probably transpiring in 23 maybe 4 seconds tops. I mainly dropped my bats I ran around the batting cage the batting cage had a little plastic barrier around the bottom if you've seen a batting cage you know what I'm talking about and took a nose dive into the dirt on the opposite side the 1st base side the batting cage where at least you could see me there were 2 or 3 others there things were so hectic I couldn't even name who they were but we were all trying to eat as much dirt as we could get as low as we could as a as a shot just kept going and going and going. Then it occurred to me that I'm still in an exposed position if the shooter makes it around the 3rd base dugout towards home plate then the 2 or 3 or 4 of us are who are lying there prone on the ground where you can see if suddenly we're in clear view 10 or 15 feet away from him with no place to go and so I made the decision that I'd take my chances trying to get into the 1st base dugout perhaps you'd have a harder time shooting a moving target and I think the other 2 or 3 people that were there with me how going to dirt were thinking the same thing and so we all very quickly sprinted towards the 1st base dugout which is down a little bit below ground level like a foot in half and we all took a nosedive into the 1st base dugout as the shots were on going and I crawled to the end of the dugout towards right field to that set of steps that's the only gate that's the only gate in or out of this place if he had made it to that gate there was no place for any of us to go unless we're going to be able to scale the 10 foot high 12 foot high chain link fence and of course with your back exposed like that you'd be a very easy target to a man with a rifle. As I'm. Again keeping my head down but at least I know he can't shoot me right now I might get there ricochet and I was at risk. I notice that a gentleman next to me one of the congressman Roger Williams staff members act Barth. He's bleeding profusely from as Cath and I say Hey dude you're or words to that effect you're bleeding you've been shot and you know how it is when we're young Sean Young males we think we're immortal he said something defacto it's no big deal but you better shape it's a bit of a meal and so I took off my belt there was someone next to me I don't remember who it was things were happening so quick and again bullets are flying over our heads during this process. David Bailey one of our Capitol police officers who is now standing at the. Center block edge of the dugout firing back and here is about the gun was being discharged about 5 or 6 feet from my head. Above me and he was town to stay down stay down and he was engaging the shooter not keep in mind or shoot all the way across a baseball diamond the Enfield and it's pistols against a rifle which is not really a very fair fight but notwithstanding that Apple police officer gave me a little bit of motional. We understand Congressman rarely do I have what you want Officer Terry did Bailey and Chris also Griner they rest their lies they both took bullets and if they had not been successful there would be a lot of dead people at that ball field right now the shooter eventually made it around the 3rd base dugout towards home plate between the stands and the fencing and so the 3 or 4 of us there on the ground behind the batting cage made a sound decision to take our chance to get the shot while we were running as opposed to lying there because if we had lying there had been when he got to that point would have been 10 to 15 feet from him and like sitting ducks but the capper police and gauged they were successful they took him down somewhere behind home plate I don't know the exact location all this is going on we know that there are other wounded after take at least a escalate so I you know immediately after the 1st shots glanced over in that direction he was on the ground there's a lot of shouting active shooter admission that the 1st time you noticed he was shot I noticed he was shot as I was I think I heard his voice scream I've been shot hit or something to that effect or someone else might have said Steve glaces been hit within the 1st 3 or 4 or 5 shots I was conscious and have been him being hit and I was running around to try to get behind the batting cage I could see him on the ground on the dirt in the 2nd base and feel part of the day and failed our 2nd baseman with flying and you could see him trying to drag himself with his arms towards right field he could not walk he could not get up you couldn't even call but he was slowly dragging himself about a foot at a time. Towards the right feel grass so at some point I get to see my forever in the dugout someone shouts shooter down shooter down. Of course you don't know if there's one shooter or more at this point often there are multiple attackers you don't know if it's a long ball. One or 2 maybe 3 people I remember Jeff Flake being one of them I don't remember who the other one or 2 were. They ran out the worst days Cleese was 2nd or 2 later I ran out of the dock out towards the schoolies so I was about the 3rd or 4th person to stay in Scully's. And the 1st 2 came to worst he's had was and he was lying on the ground now in the outfield there was a blood trail about 15 yards long they were talking to him trying to let him know that we're going to do what we could as you can imagine with blood loss he was asking for fluid so someone went got him water or gator 8 or something. He seemed to be going into shock as I perceive shock to be I'm not a doctor. But he was conscious the whole time. I was at his waist on the center field side of his body his body was facing center field. Where the blood was coming out of the is halfwit. David Bailey he's wounded he's limping and he goes to stay escalates to check on him. That's a hero. His duty was to take care city's police who had been shot and. You know we had to shoot him away because he was shot himself. As. Read when strippers the doctor at this point was trying to tend to stay his colleagues with a hip where. I was applying the pressure as bread pressure to the live with the cross as bad when strippers trying to cut the pair but to see David Bailey come out there limping because he to have been shot to check on stage I never forget that and the heroism of those 2 people risking their own lives to protect those that they were sworn to protect.
