(vicki) police are working to identify a body that was recovered from the feather river in live oak. it is the same area where police were searching for aly yeoman just one month ago. police found yeoman's truck and cell phone shortly after she went missing. the 20-year-old was last seen at a friend's house in yuba city. investigators searched that home but police say they did not find anything suspicious. the sutter county sheriff's office says they are still working to determine if the body is connected to aly yeoman's disappearance. (grant) another big story we are following... tonight - the head of the coroner's office in marin county, was in court today - facing charges he sexually assaulted a young girl. the case against the well known law enforcement official has stunned his colleagues and the comminuty. kron four's terisa estacio has details, and including what his family is saying about the charges. (terisa estacio reporting) 46 year old darrell alan harris shown here has been with the marin county coroners office for nearly 15 years - but right now, harris behind bars charged with committing lewds with a minor as well as sexual battery. dori ahana, chief deputy district attorney marin county. " yes, these are serious charges." on monday, harris was in court. no cameras were allowed. harris sat quietly with his attorney and did not enter a pleas. his wife and son were inside during the proceedings. (estacio, reporter - can you talk to us? about what happened? is your father guilty of this?" ) his wife cried in court as her husband made his first appearance on the sexual molestation charges. (estacio reporting, " mamm, can you talk to us about this" silence." this is marin county chief deputy district attorney. dori ahana, chief deputy district attorney marin co. he is charged with sexual assault relating to a minor. i wil not go into further detail about the victim, she is known as jane doe. she has a right to confidentiality. when asked whether there could be other victims ahana. i believe it was stated in court there is a protective order for one person, jane doe. harris - also, a part time commericial photographer - became chief deputy coroner in marin in 2015 - sources tell kron four news he is in charge of crime scene investigations. he started with the county in 2003. the current case against him dates back more than 10 years ago - the criminal complaint states the crimes involving a minor girl started in may of 2008 to 2011. then another charge when the female victim was older - those crimes reportedly taking place in 2011 to 2013. the marin county sheriff's department issued this statement, "we are deeply saddened and troubled by mr. harris's arrest. we will be initiating an interview review in this matter. our thoughts are with the victim during this troubling time." this is harris' attorney. doughlas horngard, harris attorney. "i have not seen any reports, but i have spoken to a lot of people in the system . mr. harris is well known at the civic center. the unanimous rection is shock and no one believes this to be true. standup - estacio "darrel harris is being held on 750 thousand dollar bail. he remains in custody here at the marin county jail. he will be back in court in two weeks when he is expected to enter a plea. his atroney tells kron four news - he is attempting to get his bail reduced to return home to his family. (vicki) this morning two people died in a plane crash near lake berryessa. 55-year-old jon karkow was the pilot and 41-year-old cagri sever was the passenger when the plane crashed. both are employees of icon aircraft operated out of vacaville. the crash happened just after 9am between pleasure cove marina and markley cove resort. officials have not yet figured out why the single-engine icon a5 crashed. when paramedics arrived at the scene they found that both people in the plane were dead. the crash site is inaccessible by vehicle so emergency personnel are getting to the site by boat. the crash is under investigation. a man who is accused of shooting a police officer to death during a traffic stop has been ordered to stand trial. 22-year-old mark estrada of oakland has been charged in connection with the 20-15 murder of sgt. scott lunger. officials say lunger had pulled estrada over in hayward because he was driving erratically. that''s when police say he pulled out a gun...and shot officer lunger. estrada could face the death penalty if convicted. he will return to court may 19th...when a trial date is expected to be set. (grant) two oakland gang members have been sentenced to life in prison for killing a 66-year-old woman who had filmed them commiting a crime. 25-year-old stephon lee and 24-year-old mario floyd were sentenced for the 20-13 killing of judy salamon. police say lee fatally shot her after confronting her about the video. police believe floyd then took salamon's phone after lee shot her. the suspects had been convicted by a jury in september of last year but the sentencing had been delayed so the court could investigate potential juror misconduct. (vicki) no one was hurt but some in the congregation of a south bay church say they are fearful after someone deliberately set fire to their church early sunday. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now from san jose, this was the latest in a recentstring of suspicious fires in the same part of town. this steel cross is all that remains of a large storage shed that was destroyed, along withpart of a rear staircase and a hallway when flames erupted shortly after midnight sunday at the rear of the church here on minnesota avenue in east willow glen. lina naumann/sunday school teacher" i am worried about my kids, my sunday school kids, i want them to be safe, i don't want them to see this. i want them to be able to come here and learn about the heavenly father..."not yet made public, a church official says a security camera captured images of a lone individual breaking into the property and starting the fire, which was reported by a neighbor.firefighters stopped the flames short of damaging the nearby chapel but that storage shedcontained equipment, paint and all of the tools belonging to church handyman bernard elia.bernard elia/church handyman" and that is important to me because i take my food from those tools, but right now i have no tools and that means no no work, no nothing."church official alex alexander says there is no evidence this was a hate crime. he says the church received no threats and says the church is on very good terms with the neighborhood. extra security will be in place nonetheless going forward as the congregation is saddened and fearful over what happened.lina naumann/sunday school teacher" they are very sad, very concerned, some are afraid and have expressed fear because they want to feel safe when theycome here...." (grant) a man in custody in san juaquin county for a sexual assault crime has been identified as the suspect in a castro valley homicide case. the alameda county sheriff's office say luckie dacaney recently confessed to the brutal murder of 59-year-old andrea st. john, whose burned body was found in her castro valley home on grove way back in december. sheriff greg ahern/alameda county: "we are very glad to announce that charges have been filed against luckie dacany and the charges were filed with the district attorney for the homicide, arson as well as torture. we believe the suspect went to the residence late in the evening to commit a burglary, steal some items out of the garage and was confronted by the victim and at that time he killed her and then burned the resident in the structure at that time to hide the evidence" investigators say in addition to confessing to killing andrea st. john...video evidence also helped confirm the suspect's identity. st. john was a widow, mother and grandmother. (anchor) time now to check on our weather... with chief meterologist brittney shipp. high pressure building over the region will result in a warming trend into tuesday. temperatures trend cooler on wednesday as the ridge breaks down and onshore flow increases ahead of our next approaching system. much cooler and breezy conditions return region-wide late in the week with a slight chance of showers across the north bay on thursday. temperatures below seasonal averages and mainly dry conditions will then extend into the upcoming weekend. (grant) you may remember, the recent winter storms, had a recent winter remember, the you may (grant) (grant) you may remember, the recent winter storms, had a crippling effect on highway 37 in novato. flooding forced crews to shutdown the highway several different times... and it took days..s.everal days... before it could reopen. it's estimated that it will cost 11- and-a-half million dollars to make repairs on the road that would prevent future flooding. and now city leaders are considering different ways to get that money - and get it fast. one idea that's gaining a lot of traction - is adding tollways to highway 37. that way the city can generate enough money to fix the flood prone section of highway 37. right now its just an idea - no word when a decision will be made. (vicki) there will be continued flaring at the valero benicia refinery this week while crews work to restore operations at the facility. valero has advised the city that it is switching the flaring from the south flare to the north flare. this will allow crews time to fully inspect the south flare. it all started with a power outage at the refinery friday morning that led to flaring which released massive plumes of thick black smoke into the air, prompting an evacuation in the area. there is no word on how much longer the flaring will continue. (grant) still ahead... texas takes a controversial step when it comes to sanctuary cities. the new law that was just signed by the governor. (grant) a stanford student's long fight to make a popular short-cut safer.... is finally paying off. it's known as the "scary path," and it's an unpaved and un-lit dirt trail between fraternities near where stanford swimmer brock turner assaulted an unconcious victim. after the project is complete it will be called the knoll path. construction to pave and light the path will begin next week. officials say they will also construct a "blue light" emergency call box along the path. (vicki) eighteen fraternity members at penn state are accused in the hazing death of a pledge who reportedly fell down a flight of stairs while heavily intoxicated..(grant) catherine heenan is here with new details of what happened in the february incident..including what the attorney for the victim's family is now saying.. (catherine) the attorney is one of the people who say 19-year-old timothy piazza did not have to die.. that the fraternity knew he was hurt - did nothing to help - then tried to cover it up. prosecutors say surveillance video inside the fraternity caught caught some of the last minutes of piazza's life. 8 of the 18 fraternity members are charged with involuntary manslaughter after the sophomore was left lying at the bottom of the basement stairs for 'hours' after falling. cameras had earlier recorded piazza trying unsuccessfully to open the frontdoor, then staggering toward the basement steps. he was eventually carried upstairs -- the video shows his limp body unresponsive.... it wasn't until he was found cold and bloody the next morning thatsomeone finally called 9-1-1. piazza died the next day. tom klineattorney for piazza family they realized that they, not tim, that they could be in trouble and so they they did everything humanly possible to preserve themselves. self-preservation set in. they cleaned the house. they scrubbed their social media. and while they pushed away any good samaritan that tried to help them call 911. it is outrageous and grotesque. court documents say house members put a weighted backpack on piazza so he wouldn't choke onhis own vomit....but otherwise ignored the fact he was badly hurt. one fraternity member says he argued that someone should call 9-1-1 but he wastold he was over-reacting, and then pushed against a wall. the fraternity has been permanently banned from penn state's campus. 10 of the defendants are being arraigned this week...the others were in court last friday.grant and vicki? (vicki) kron four's rob fladeboe has been following this trial since it began... he joins us live now from san jose - with when we will learn the verdict against antolin garcia-torres. rob? i had two in torres. rob?antolin garcia- torres. rob? i had two in person meetings and one phone call with the white house about mr flynn (vicki )former acting attorney general sally yates says she repeatedly warned trump officials about michael flynn... she says she told them that the newly named national security adviser was a not only a liar ... but a potential blackmail target for russian intelligence,(vicki) tonight we know more about the numerous red flags raised over general flynn's contacts with the russian ambassadors.and the danger of russia's attempts to influence the election.(grant)catherine heenan is here to sum up the day's testimony. (catherine) the message from sally yates: russia is actively trying to undermine american democracy. and president trump's former national security adviser was himself a security risk. "the underlying conduct that general flynn had engaged in was problematic in and of itself."this is yates's first public appearance since she was fired four months ago for refusing to enforce president trump's travel ban. she testified she raised the alarm after government surveillance caught flynn meeting with russia's ambassador ... and flynn later lied about the subject of their talks..she says the initial white house response was "so what?" "essentially, why does it matter to doj if one white house official lies to another white house official?" she says she told them flynn had put himself in a dangerous position. the russians also knew that general flynn had misled the vice president and others/// and that created a compromise situation, a situation where the national security adviser essentially could be blackmailed by the russians." former national intelligence director james clapper also testified. "the intelligence community assessment concluded first, that president putin directed an influence campaign to erode the faith and confidence of the american people in our presidential election process. second, that he did so to demean secretary clinton and third, that he sought to advantage mr. trump."appearing on c=n=n, bay area congressman eric swalwell said he has seen evidence of collusion between the trump campaign and russia. there's a pattern here, john, on the classified and unclassified side of deep personal, political and financial ties that donald trump and people in his family, in his businesses, and on his campaign had with a foreign adversary in russia that converged at the same time that russia was interfering with our campaign. (catherine) flynn was fired a few days after yates' warning to the white house. he's offered to testify ... but only if he's given immunity from prosecution.and congress hasn't agreed to that. grant? (grant) a controversial "sanctuary cities" bill is now law in texas. this is facebook live video of governor greg abbott signing the bill. it essentially bans sanctuary cities from the lone star state... and would penalize local governments and law enforcement that don't comply with immigration laws and detention requests. the governor of texas says the measure, which goes into effect september first, gets dangerous criminals off the street. (sot) "this law imposes penalties up to 25-thousand dollars per day and it can lead to jail time and removal from office for any official who refuses to comply with the ban on sanctuary cities." the governor says the key policies of the new bill are constitutional. but critics say the new law encourages racial profiling and threatens the jobs of lawmakers and law enforcement who do not comply. today a federal appeals court heard arguments about president trump's revised travel ban. protests took place outside the courthouse today. the court is working to decide whether it's constitutional to suspend new visas for people from six muslim majority countries. an attorney challenging the ban says trump's anti-muslim rhetoric is evidence that the policy was motivated by hostility. a judge says the case hinges on whether the court considers trump's statements or focuses solely on the text of the executive order, which is religiously neutral. (grant) still ahead - chp asking for your help locating an auto burglary suspect who crashed into a fire hydrant before running away.(vicki) but first, former president obama is speaking for the first time about the efforts to repeal the affordable care act. hear what he's asking congress to do... (grant) stock indexes are finishing little changed on wall street as losses in materials and health care companies held back gains in energy and other parts of the market. the dow edging up 5 points. the nasdaq... adding nearly 2. and the s&p added a fraction of a point. ,$8drw (grant) a call to action from former president barack obama. he made brief remarks while accepting the 20-17 john f. kennedy profile in courage award in massachusetts. obama called on members of congress to oppose the repeal of the affordable care act. he urged lawmakers to show some courage, no matter how difficult that may be. " i hope they understand that courage means not simply doing what is politically expedient, but doing what they believe, deep in their hearts, is right. and this kind of courage is required from all of us." the former president also said courage was needed in today's political climate, which he says is full of discord. his comments were the first since house lawmakers voted thursday to repeal and replace the affordable care act. (vicki) over 200-thousand people under the age of 20 have diabetes. according to a new study published in the new england journal of medicine. researchers are finding that those numbers are rising. diabetes cases have increased by nearly seven percent from 2002 to 2012. they also found that race and gender play a factor in developing the disease. as of now, researchers are examining factors that may increase the risk of developing diabetes while young ... in addition to ways to prevent and treat the condition. (steve) grant it was a brutal murder in castro valley.... last december some broke into the home of 59- year-old andrea saint john... when she confronted the burglar he killed her... and then set her home on fire to cover up the murder. now a man already in custody in san juaquin county for sexual assault has been identified as the suspect in the murder of saint john. tonight we'll hear from the alameda county sheriff about the evidence that lead them to the arrest. we'll have that story and much more on kron 4 news at six. grant now back to you. (pam on cam) earlier today, kron4's haaziq madyun was at the alameda county sheriff's office ... when the announcement was made that a suspect has been charged 36-year-old luckie dacany, currenlty in custody for a sexual assault crime in san juaquin county, has confessed to the brutal murder of andrea st. john...alameda county sheriff greg ahernback in december 2016 the victim, 59- year-old andrea st. john was in her home on grove way in castro valley when investigators say dacany allegedly broke-insheriff greg ahern/alameda county: "we believe the suspect went to the residence late in the evening to commit a burglary, steal some items out of the garage and was confronted by the victim and at that time he killed her and then burned the resident in the structure at that time to hide the evidence" the announcement of a suspect being in custody and charged for her murder is welcome news for folks in this quiet castro valley neighborhoodthe violent incident prompted some neighbors to be more vigilant in terms of looking out for each othersheriff ahern says there appears to be no prior connection between the suspect and the victim ajudicated.then he will be brought to alameda county where he is facing a murder charge with enhancements which would make him eligible for the death penalty in this case...at the alameda county sheriff's headquarters in dublin... haaziq madyun kron4news ( steve ) one person is dead tonight and two others injured following a shooting in fairfield. police say, they received calls at about 4-30 this morning. when they arrived at the scene on crowley lane... officers found three victims. there is no word on arrests or suspects and the identities of the victims has not been released. we know the two victims that survived the shooting remain hospitalized tonight. the extent of their injuries are not clear. (pam ) the head of the coroner's office in marin county, in court today - facing charges that he sexually assaulted a young girl. this is darrell alan harris. the 46 - year old did not enter a plea. he is currently facing several counts, some dating back to may of 2008. in a criminal complaint, filed by the marin county district attorneys office, it claims, harris molested a minor girl back in 2008, and then when she was older as well. harris works as the top coroner - investigating crime scenes. he has been with the county since 2003. his wife and son were in court today and his attorney says, everyone is in a state of disbelief about the charges. (steve) this morning two people died in a plane crash near lake berryessa. 55-year-old jon karkow was the pilot and 41-year-old cagri sever was the passenger when the plane crashed. both are employees of icon aircraft operated out of vacaville. the crash happened just after 9am between pleasure cove marina and markley cove resort. officials have not yet figured out why the single-engine icon a5 crashed. when paramedics arrived at the scene they found that both people in the plane were dead. the crash site is inaccessible by vehicle so emergency personnel are getting to the site by boat. the crash is under investigation.
