Sno6 and next the countdown o election day isnr on and californians are set to vote on legalizing Recreational Marijuana. Here in california we are less than two months away from voting on whetherslan or notiro legalize marijuana for recreational use. Medicinal pot has been legal in the state for 20 years. We talk÷ to a long time Public Health advocate who believes it was written more for big business interest than for people in our state. Marijuana should not be illegal. Hes been fighting big tobacco in california for decades. This year he coauthored a paper taking a look at what the impact legalizing pot via propjf 64 wl have on our state. In his opinion the negatives out weigh the positives. < i think the war on drugs has beenzy2 a failure. And people shouldnt be thrown in jail for using marijuana. The problem with the initiative ist its going to exchange a. 5a Public Health crisis. While marijuana does bring relief to people battling illnesses like cancer, the professor says like cigarettes there are Health Risks Associated with smoking pot. It would be like theres chemo therapy out there for cancer. For some people it does a lot o good. But its not something that g u just go n pick up at a corner dispensary. Or thato[i you use in a wayt whh exposes bystanders to the secondhandykm effects. Again marijuana has been identified for years asooa carcinogen. Hes concerned that prop 64 will create a wealthy and politically powerful Marijuana Industry that like big tobacco spending millions fighting togz defendfa its pro. He says prop 64 was written for business interestsko in mind rather than Public Health. Those on the yes side say thats not the case. What prop 64 is doing is takingko an illegal billion dor industry and taking it out into the light so we know whos selling, we know whos buying and were protectingfa the publc health. The yes side said if made law pot smokers would not be allowed to toke in public. They also argue that prop 64 was written so that state regulators could make changes after it passes ine 1n order to protect Public Health. The professor is working on a new Research Project set to be released later on this month. It examine it is four states where Recreational Marijuana has already5 ne been legalized. Thats colorado, alaska, oregon and washington state. There was a child enjoying his second day of first grade when he was sent home by the principal.
