We know that people were running from the area yelling shooter and then ran for cover. We will go to henry lee live at the command post with what you are learning from police. Reporter yeah. Just a recap. This happened at 8 55 this morning when a man, a ups worker wearing a uniform opened fire at the ups Customer Center on san bruno avenue in San Francisco. What we know is this. Three victims are killed. The man then opened fire on himself. Two other people are wounded. We do not have a motive in that case. We do not have an identity of the shooter or dead or injured. That may come out later today. I want to go to the chief who addressed the media with in the last half hour. Lets hear what we had to say. Officers determined this was an active shooter situation and formed contact teams. They found shooting victims and evacuated them to a safe location to start medical treatment. One team located the suspect who was still armed with an assault pistol. The suspect put the gun to his head and discharged the weapon. The suspect was dressed in a ups uniform but we have not yet confirmed or determined if he is an employee of the we are told that everybody was secure and everything was okay so we are curious as to why they went back in with weapons drawn. There may be people barricaded inside and not sure where they are so officers have to worry about their own safety as they secure the building. When we headed up out there, up on sbruno on 17th is where we saw two covered bodies. We know those are it would have the three victims that were shot. I believe the third victim was and taken to the hospital and died there. The 4th person was the shooter who shot himself. Basically what happened in this area when he first arrived, there were tons of officers out here working this area. We know there was a lot of people in the ups uniforms crowded out away from the building after they were evacuated. They were brought down san bruno street to this area. We can see show you there is more vehicles out here. This is where a lot of them pick up their cars because there is a lot of trucks out here. They may have been working out to the trucks. The shooting appeared this morning which is before a lot of them went out to deploy. We can tell you that its not as active as it was earlier but the swat team went back inside. There was a k9 unit out here checking the cars in the area and there were officers knocking on a lot of there is a homeless camp out here with a lot of tents and officers knocked on some of the tents to talk to the homeless people. This is still an active investigation. As soon as they come back out i will ask them questions. Im not sure they will tell us much since its an active investigation. Its curious why the swat team went back in to the building when we were told the building is secure. Paul chambers. We saw something similar on one of the live pictures. It was after sort of the all clear was given or a notice that the gunman was was injured and out of the threat sense. We saw officers advancing with guns drawn and then retreating. It was a dynamic situation on the top on the open parking structure area. We have seen that happen before. Remember how big that facility is. It is huge. If they realize they havent checked an area they will check it with a full force to make sure they are safe. Rob roth has been at the scene talking to employees who were evacuated after the shooting. If we can bring him in. You spoke to one man who said that he heard everything. Reporter i did. I did. We will get to him. Just want to set the scene. You can see the command vehicles behind me. It goes for several blocks and they have been here all morning on the other side of the police tape. Especially on the other side of the camera. Family members, they have loved ones who are employees. They are waiting to hear word. We talked to two women who one has heard from her daughter. She is okay. There is perhaps a a heart breaking story that is unfolding where she has not heard from her son. I see she keeps texting and making calls but hasnt heard anything. Hopefully she will get good news. As you said a little while ago we did speak to a ups driver. He was coming here for a meeting to sort of get the day started and here is what he said. What did you hear . Six to seven shots. Bam, bam. Reporter did you hear anyone say anything . No. I just started screaming get out, get out. Gun shots, go, go, go, everybody started running. Reporter has it been like for you . Shocking. You go through so quick and you think about your kids, think about your co workers, thinking about people you care, my family, everybody. Reporter and the mans name is marvin. He is getting very distraught. We saw other employees come. They didnt want to talk to us. They seemed very upset and just wanted to get more information. So its a very sad scene here. Sad and shocking. People just obviously came to work today, had no idea that anything so tragic was about to happen. Back to you. Rob can i ask you, certainly not to date you but you have been with ktvu a long time. Did you report on the 101 california shooting back in 93 . If you did are there any parallels at all or not . Reporter i did. I did. The parallels would be you know someone walked into a workplace in 101 california. It was a law office. And opened fire. There were mass casulties. More so in that one. Beyond that i knowing all thats behind this current case. A lot of information still coming out. Before you make any more comparisons, its similar in the fact that it was workplace violence. Someone walked in, was able to walk in with a gun and do damage. I think rob its at that point the 101 california was so shocking. Unfortunately since that incident we have seen so many more workplace shootings and i think you are right. We dont know what is behind this one. Certainly the tragedy is the parallel and the complete fear and horrible nature of it certainly runs through. Thank you so much rob. We will check in with you in just a moment. I think thats what really pulls people together really is we all go to work and it can happen and thats what has caused so many to reach out and say we are with you in this and this horrible day. And our local lawmakers doing the same. Covering the situation from the very beginning from the newsroom. A number of officials speaking out. Yes. Local and state lawmakers responding to this tragedy. I want to start with a statement that the San Francisco mayor put out a short time ago. He said i want to offer my thoughts and sympathies for the individuals and families affected by the senseless act of violence at the ups facility. He said we are always sad when someone looses a life to gun violence, even one shooting one victim is to many. This was of course after the mayor started off by thanking the San Franciscos first responders, Emergency Responders and the dedicated staff at San Francisco General Hospital who we know are treating the victims. We spoke to San Francisco state senator scott weiner who talked about this tragedy. Its referenced this shooting the one that happened in virginia earlier this morning where four people including a congressional representative were shot over there. He said that this kind of showed the need in his view for gun control, stricter gun control lawless. Lets listen to what he to say. Our gun laws in this country are not where they need to be. We are working hard in california to have smart gun control laws. We have more work to do. Having someone who just walks in to a facility and starts shooting people. Thats terrifying and should never happen. And the governor also responding to this commenting on both shootings today. Sending out atwitter saying our thoughts and prayers are with everybody impacted by the senseless violence today in San Francisco and virginia. The Lieutenant Governor who as we know former mayor of San Francisco also sent out a response saying senseless, tragics, to often, thinking of those affected by todays San Francisco shooting. The people of our city stand with you always. So, we are getting a lot of response from leaders in San Francisco and across the state and country. The unfortunate thing is that this is the second major shooting, mass shooting to happen and when i was talking to the Lieutenant Governors press person earlier this morning i initially reached out to him saying do you have a statement and he hee mailed me referencing the shooting in virginia. I had to email and say no, we are talking about the one in San Francisco and he said its a sad statement of the state of affairs that we have to clarify which mass shooting we are talking about. There were a couple of lines that the governor said. Two thick that could apply to either situation. A horrible event and violence is never the answer. Thank you. You are monitoring the situation. We will let you know. Thank you. And we have two people also hurt. We have the three killed. The gunman who killed himself and then a total of four deaths and then two who are hurt and at San Francisco General Hospital. Thats where tom is and what are you learning . Reporter we dont know the condition of these folks but you can tell that if you shoot five people and three of them die that it was a powerful weapon, shot by a person who apparently knew a little bit about what he was doing or at least got very, very lucky. Given that fact its very likely that these are fairly serious wounds. You cant be in a better place perhaps in the country than where we are now, San Francisco generals Trauma Center because this is the place that deals with gun violence every day. The people are skilled knowledgeable and know what they are doing. Having been trained as an army medic i can tell you they have two things in their favor. One is they were very close to this location so they got here quick and in the treatment of gun shot wounds the quicker the better. The other thing about this is that if they were hit in certain parts of the body the repairs are straight forward. You get shot in the head thats a different situation. The reality is that these people are under the best care they could possibly be under anywhere in the united states. Two people hurt, four killed including the gunman who killed himself. We are standing by and the second we hear anything we will bring it to you. Fox 2news. Okay. All right. Lets recap for the folks who are just joining us. So much information has been coming in over the last few hours since this happened at 8 55 this morning. We have our crews spread out through every different aspect. They get the first call that there was a shooting outside the ups facility. They arrived on scene and two people had been killed. That was outside of the building but the assistant chief said they determined that the shooter was inside the building. Witnesses said everybody yelled shooter, shooter. Witnesses reporting hearing five to eight gun shots and then they went in the building, Police Tracked the shooter down and they say thats when he put what they are calling an assault pistol. We are trying to determine how they determined thats what it was. The assistant chief called it an assault pistol, that he put that weapon to his head and shot himself. That ended up starting this other chain of event was hundreds of people inside that building. And as of the evacuations got started we brought you scenes like this live. We saw emergency vehicle, lights and sirens going. The neighborhood was essentially on lockdown. People told to avoid the area. People told to shelter in place. That order has been lifted. We saw dozens of workers from that massive ups building like this group here wearing that brown ups uniform being led out of the facility after having been searched and essentially called even frisked. I saw where you see the police patting someone down as the man has his hands on his head making sure there is nothing of any sort of suspicious on the persons body. This is a picture we keep going to. A family of co workers, of comfort and one of disbelief and shock. As we see here co workers embracing. Asking themselves the question why did it happen . We know police are working on their investigation. Again we know that four people are dead. Two are injured, that number, four includes the suspect who put the gun to his own head and fired upon confrontation by police. We see a similar scene. These pictures are on tape. This is what happened in the past three plus hours now of our coverage. Workers being led out of that massive ups facility where some 350 workers work. We dont know how many were inside at the time. Again the headline four people dead including the shooter. Two more being treated at the hospital. We are working on identifying the gunman. Trying to figure out what motive he may have had. We are not rushing to bring you this information because we are working to confirm it and make sure that its right. Certainly the damage that has been done is not able to be retracted. Thats why we are being cautious and working to bring you the latest accurate information. We have seen this ebb and flow. From what the assistant police chief said. After they arrived they found the two confirmed deaths. There were a couple of other people hurt. At least one other person had been killed. Then you also have them going inside. However, after that, two hours later we could still see Police Officers with their guns drawn on the roof as they checked the building. Paul chambers was out there early. He could see how things have changed gone and paul you know i think as you were covering we talked about the change of what they were operating but still when we talkedda with you last you had swat going into the building and really every time they kind of have a new development they go into it fresh as they were starting and making sure they look at it and very, careful each and every step. Reporter exactly. Of course with this being such a large widing, more than 800 people working here. They are going back in. Havent seen swat come back out. Im reading reports of people putting out support for certain members they say work here. They said on that after sources that again still to be confirmed that a lot of the people may have been hurt and died were drivers. Thats the information we are working on right now. The information that we know is that the shooting happened just before nine. A lot of the drivers were on their way in to the building or coming out for their assignments and thats when the issue happened. Two of the people were shot up on 17th and san bruno. We are also hearing that its a possibility that some are unthed for and thats a possibility thats a possibility why swat went back in. There are some people that have yet to be confirmed where they have and where the identities are and rob roth, we were talking to people at the center trying to figure out what is going on. I think that report there with some reports of where people were led swat to go back inside to look for people and make sure the people was secure. This is a large building. With more than 800 there is a lot of different places people can go inside. Thats one reason that swat officers were back out here. You can see that the truck is more officers are coming back outon the scene. This is just part of their investigation to make sure that Everything Else is going on. We also talked earlier today about the mood of the officers. A lot of them are out here they are not as high as they were before. They are more relaxed may leads us to believe that everything is safe. Of course with people not being able to be found and people yet to turn up and missing they possibly im trying to figure out that. It makes more sense of why they went back inside with their guns drawn for their safety and also for the safety of the people out here in the area. Reading social media a lot of people putting out support were out for people who are listed themselves as drivers. We are trying to confirm that. We know the shelter in brace was lifted but it still seems are you looking down the street from where you are that its still quiet. The streets still shut down. It doesnt appear you are getting the big crowds down there. Reporter when they allow people, civil ans to walk down the street they dont believe its an active situation anymore. I think that is why they arent letting a high level of traffic. Thats why none of the people are allowed to be in. Its still a shooting scene. That is the reason why this is shut down. They have the buses stopped in this area. Nobody is coming in or out. We know that if it was a major active situation we wouldnt be this close right now. Absolutely. They put safety of everybody in that area first. All right. Paul, thank you so much for the very latest from the scene. We will check back in with you. We have seen it change and develop as the morning progresses. We have a statement from ups that we want to bring you. It basically confirms most of the information that we have heard. We have gone back and forth between understanding if this shooter the gunman. The assistant chief said we cant confirm in the gunman was an employee. We had been confirming the company that the gunman who was dressed in the ups uniform is an employee. Witnesses said they recognized him. This ups statement said that it confirm there is was a shooting involving six employees with in the Company Facility in San Francisco earlier this morning. The six people would be the three people that were killed, the shooter and two other people that we know are hurt and at San Francisco general right now. They are not providing information on the investigation or the identities of the people involved and so they are they are just expressing how deeply saddened they are. Some 350 people work inside that building as we heard from the assistant chief at spd bringing us a briefing we were able to bring you live. He said there are dozens and dozens of witnesses. We have heard the secondhand, firsthand some of the stories of people hearing the gun shots. Multiple gun shots. One question we have in the police are working to figure out is who exactly is the shooter and what was his motivation. Was he shooting at random. I referenced a shooting in the south in the past week where a gunman entered a workplace he had been fired and told employees you can go. Because he had people he was after. Yes. I have no idea if thats the case here. It is a very chaotic scene. If you are one of the people who may be allowed to go, a person trapped in the room where it happened, certainly everybody is going need help and that is beginning to happen. This is a picture i references. This man getting a pat down. This is what you see even checking under his hat. This is what happens when you go through Airport Security on a day like today this happen to you if you work or do business around the ups facility ins. We also saw that earlier on the roof of that building where there was a small group of employees. We heard earlier that there were some who were saying we locked ourselves in a room and they are waiting for that knock on the door saying police, you can come out, its safe. Even when they were escorted across the top of the building on to the parking lot they were doing some walking with their hands up. They were walked to a secure place. They were all then searched. Then they were allowed to sit and then they were escorted out. There is a process as you can see. This one this video. There is a process they check. That is the difficult thing of what we have learned to make sure they are just taking a look at everybody and then they can comfort you and help and you do all that stuff. They have to make sure that everybody is safe. We will bring in henry lee. You have been covering crime in the bay area for 20 years or so. Does it surprise you to know and obviously to see if there are still police on the scene, streets roped off, officers in the building or this really is what you would expect . We can expect this whole neighborhood to be locked down for at least several more hours with this multiple homicide incident. A shooter is dead. Three people at the ups center dead. If we take a look pan off in the distance. Im at the corner of17th. You see the ups biling brick on the side. That is where 350 people work. Because of that sheer number of employees there. Multiple dozens of ups workers with their trademark brown uniforms being escorted past the yellow crime scene tape. Some to a church where loved ones gathers. Because of the number of people who work at this building we have understanding that the police have to make sure that all the employees accounted for. That they tell all relatives of those who were killed and hurt and that will when you the shooter himself. We will be here for at least the police will be here for several more hours long eras they diagram the scene. They need to bring in csi, homicide inspectors. All this will have to be documented, especially if this is a big scene with multiple casulties. We count have confirmation of the suspects identity, motive or the victims in this case. We are working to bring that to you and we are all waiting where they expect to release more information. That is the latest from San Francisco. Henry lee. Ktvu fox 2news. We have covered the scenes before where i think everything that complicate complicates it for people who dont have Law Enforcement exposure is that when there are scenes that does add something to do. When you have the number of victims that adds something to it. We know this 2 00 press conference i think and i wonder if you agree. It does give us an idea of how much more they have to do before they can give us another update. How many people they have to talk to before they are going to get enough information to come forward and say this is what we know. We they though we will have a lot of questions. Reporter yeah. They need to make sure they have a better understanding of what happened. If you recall every time there is an officer involved shooting in San Francisco and beyond they only give us the bare bones information. They are havent interviewed the officers yetn. This case they have many dozens i would expect witnesses to this horrible tragedy. The interview. They need to take each witness and interview them and get a full understanding of what happened. They will document the scene and talk about csi. Its not a situation that you that everybody will be completed in a half hour. This will take hours if not days to diagram and prepare a good crime scene. Even if the shooter is dead they need to dot every i. Right. Reporter so they know what happened. Itll be because you have you have the witnesses who saw what happened. They dont know the shoot eras well. Apparently he was an employee. We keep asking why. Whats the motive . Why would this person have done this . Here is what we we no to be true of what happened. Have you to know okay. What who knew this guy and why he would have done this. Did he tell anybody. Did he say anything that would have given us any indication. Reporter right. Also what will take time is when they recover the two guns. Police say that they will look at the registration, who owned the guns, were they legally bought, registered. There is a lot of investigation on multiple fronts here that have to be done. Not only by the police but by the San Francisco medical Examiners Office which is in charge of determining cause of death and telling next of kin. Reporter the small picture is the scene. Here we see at least a dozen in this picture. Law enforcement armed, proteched. These are the men and women, the San Francisco mayor and others have sent out their thanks and gratitude to for going into a very dangerous situation to hear the account by the assistant chief it wasnt until the gunman saw police and was confronted that he decided to take his own life. This is part of a much larger group. San francisco Law Enforcement responding to the scene. Three and a half hours ago. The ups facility at 17th and san bruno. As we bring in more reaction i will mention im about to bring to you a jackie spear is saying about this incident in San Francisco. I will read her tweet. It says senseless gun violence should have no place in our beautiful city or anywhere in our country. I am heartbroken. We spoke to her. She represents much of the peninsula and i believe a small part of San Francisco earlier today on mornings on 2 as we bring you this live picture of the scene. We were talking to representative spear about a shooting that happened in virginia as a group of republican lawmakers were gathering for an Early Morning baseball practice. The republican lawmakers were going to go at it on the baseball field against the democrats tomorrow in a long running baseball game that benefits charity and so we talked to her live and she expressed her dismay and anger and frustration over the fact that someone could go to a baseball practice and start shooting at people, including one lawmaker. House majority whip steve sc, alise who was hit in the hip and was taken to the hospital. The House Majority whip is now recovering. So you know these pictures that we are bringing you now taken earlier this morning and all the way across the country. Many are saying there is senseless gun violence here at home at ups and also clear across the country in virginia with several people injured by a gunman there. Here is whats interesting about parallel that people are drawing. We talked to scott weiner and what he said out of this incident. Was that stricter gun control law needs to happen and people need to be held responsible in the state and nationwide. With the you have representative barry of georgia saying lawmaker is be able to carry weapons to defend themselves. A lot of times what is happening is that the gun control debate takes another step and level and people are on both sides. You have a state senator who was a former supervisor saying we need to get stricter and then representative from georgia saying he was on the scene this morning at that baseball field saying that maybe i should be allowed to carry a gun with me and not just have security. And you talk about norm almost people. We have heard and reported on proposals to allow teachers to carry guns. You talk about school shootings, how that has developed in the past i think columbine was the first mass school shooting. We have been talking about the attack at 101 california in 1993 with one of the larger workplace shootings and how much that has changed. We have had conversations about people wanting to arm teachers. I remember a tweet from a mother who sent a picture of her little girl. She was standing in a bathroom stall standing on top of the toilet if you will and the little girl told her mother this is what i was taught to do if there is a shooter at my school so if he or she comes in to the bathroom they wont see my feet and they will leave me alone. Which is heart breaking and statement opponent on what they are teaching now that was different in schools. That was never told to me and what we are learning differently in the workplace. We talked about the training that police have undergone since the 101 california in 1993. How many workplace shootings we cant even countt. Changes how police respond. It changes how we all respond in the workplace and our schools and airports on our planes. That is the debate that will continue to go on. When we are just trying to wrap our minds around the lives lost and how senseless it is. That is the big question. We know the assistant chief said he doesnt believe this is terrorism related which is of course a question that people always ask right away. Is this a terror attack . We do know because the six people are all six employees of ups. The four dead. The one gunman included in that four and then the two other injured. Six employees. This happened 8 55 in the morning before the drivers went on deliver re. You may wonder if the driver the shooter was aware of the schedule. The shooter was aware of what time he would need to be there if he was targeting certain people and members of ups. I will do a quick reset. Its minuting here after 12 30. Normally we would be in the noon newscast but are you joining us watching special breaking News Coverage that is continued since nine here. Here we are more than three and a half hours in of four people that are dead including a shooter. A ups employee who opened fire outside and inside the ups facility in San Francisco at 17th and san bruno. We have the shooter, dead of a gun shot wound. We have three victims believed to be co workers there at ups dead as well. We have two people injured and being treated at San Francisco general. We are working very closely with San Francisco police trying to identity the name and the identity of the shooter who opened fire this morning. Also working to bring you more information on a possible motive. We have not heard anything about if person had a problem at the hospital, maybe a personal issue. Could it be mental illness. We have no ideas. These are possibilities we are working through with San Francisco police. We have been covering this for you since the situation unfolded just after neighbor this morning. I want to bring in heather holmes. I know that you are very familiar with the area. Tell us what you can about the situation. Reporter yeah. I live just a few block away from this ups center. This is where i go to pick up my packages. I just want to provide perspective here. This is a center. This services all of San Francisco. This is where the drivers come, they pick up their packages, they have their routes and then off they go. If you look right there, right in between the trees, the picture on your screen, that is actually the customer entrance. There are no metal detectors. Its two door that open. You hand your id to the Customer Service agent and they then turn around and get your package and you get it and out you go. Around the corner though is the entrance for the ups drivers. I run in that area. I see the driver there almost every day. Im told thats when a shift change would happen. Im told that this appears to be a disgruntled employee who came at a certain time knowing there would be a meeting where managers and other employees would be attending. Specific people. Not just a large group of people . Reporter correct. I am told. This is preliminary. This is information gathered by officers there at the scene from their initial interview s is that he had it out according to sources for specific people. I dont know if it was more than person. Im told at least one person they do believe that he came there on purpose to do harm. Im also told when we look at this sort of situation and we look at how this happened and the gunman comes in, again through sources saying that he targets certainly people. What anyone in Law Enforcement will say is when you are dealing with an active shooter the last thing they wants a confrontation. Once they come in what normally happen Social Security they try to take their own life as you heard the assistant chief explaining there. Just the fact that here you have people going into do their job. This place as i said is the major center for all of San Francisco. 850 people work there. Not all at the same time. Then other employees come in throughout the day. Large facility and im told that the meetings that they have are specific to certain drivers along certain routes. That would also indicate why perhaps this shooter, this suspected gunman came in at this certain time and went to a certain area of the building. Whats unclear is maybe why what was prevented to because if that shooter went from those shootings to baggie in the building which is when police say they arrived on scene. He was already in the building instead of taking off and trying to get away from the scene. Its unclear if there was more to the plan than what we saw by the time he was confronted by police. Reporter right. Obviously thats something that investigators are going to be looking at. At first and foremost is talking to the witnesses there. Then identifying the suspect, talking to his family. Talking to his friends. Did they know how upset he was, did he give any indication that he may be so upset that he would take steps such as this . If so when were those conversations this . This is something that you know sfpd will be on the scene there. I know that the assistant chief said we believe that the situation has been deemed safe if you will. Police are going to search that building and just make sure that there are no other threat and that there are no other victims. Since you are familiar with that area how busy that Customer Center gets. I know i only have gone to a center like that when i have missed the deliver are you three or four times and i cant i have to sign for it. Times i may have been in that building just once when i lived in San Francisco. Its not very crowded because most people are expecting those packages to come to them. Reporter i would say normally when i go in there is at least three or four other people there to pick up packages. There is also an area to drop off packages. If you already have everything set up. You can just drop that off. Its a pretty busy area. Its a small Customer Service area with the Larger Center with trucks and drivers. These days you cant go to a ups store or Grocery Store without knowing knowing you are on surveillance. I would expect the customer portion of that building to be outfitted surveillance cameras. These days even office buildings, ours included significant surveillance services. Im guessing what happened may have been caught on camera. Of course we saw two people dead outside the building on the street. Im guessing that really any big building of this size has its own Security System outside. As we have talked about whats happening here im going to bring a voice and a statement in, someone who has been in and who has known really a voice in face of San Francisco for decades. California senator diane feinstein. Former mayor of San Francisco. She released a statement following todays shooting in or city. I will read it to you. It said i was heartbroken to learn another senseless act of gun violence has marred the city. My heart goes out to everybody affected. She said that i cant help but recall the 101 california street shooting in 1993 when eight people were killed. Violence is never the answer. The continuing scourge of guilty violence is disheartening. She goes onto say im hopeful we can take away lessons to help prevent these acts from happening in the future. We must do more to address the under lying roots of these tragic events. This statement just in from california senator diane feinstein. One of californias two senators. We heard from ka mela harris expressing their does disgust. And senator feinstein is from San Francisco obviously and its interesting she mentioned the 1993 california shooting which we talked about. One other thing we have been talking about is your work from people come in and there is violence and of course the mayor of San Francisco when he was shot and killed in the offices of city hall. And you i was just at city hall to talk to the mayor. I had to put my things in a basket. I was wanded, i walked through it was like go to the airport. We have covered several situation that police and other Law Enforcement go through as they now sort of shift their training to dealing and responding with an active shooter. Today mardy said we mourn for the victims of the tragic accident there. Firefighters and police were on the scene with in minutes. The incident though highlights the need for cooperation between fire and police people. He points out that just last week police and fire people participated in an active shooter situation training. He said they put that into action. He said its an important tool to prepare people to Work Together to respond to citizens like today. This is a reality but todays incident shows how those two agencies are able to Work Together, get in there and as they did in this case prevent any other loss of life. They said that the communication and everything that we learned in the wake, that is something they will learn from the sheer size and the crime scenes we know happened on in and how they clear people from a building of that size. Sort of a fancy word i learned when i was reporting on different agencies talking to each other. The word is interop era bility. If you are police and im sheriff i need to be able to talk to you and thats something that Law Enforcement agencies really are starting to focus on. Think about if if an earthquake struck. It doesnt matter what city you are a Police Officer in. Are you coming to where the very worst of it is and these men and women need to be able to talk to each other. We havent seen anything of this size unfold in San Francisco. I would say for months, possibly even years. Again its a workplace shooting thats happening inside a very large building. If you were with us during the coverage of breaking news and the nine to ten hour we saw Police Officers searching the parked vehicles. We saw groups of them moving toward the building with weapons at the ready. We saw large groups of people being led away from the building itself after they had been searched by police. Here we see that again. These are scene that are familiar with us now. The idea of evacuating a building or classmates banding together to stop intruders, to stop an attacker. These are becoming part of the daily life for students, co workers, Law Enforcement agency and its a new age we are living in. You were saying when was that active Shooter Drill . Just last week is what marty said in regards to the cooperation and the type of training that both police and firefighters do. Law enforcement always preparing for the unthinkable. This is a case in which you have not only a lot of employees but there is that customer entrance and i believe that this customer entrance may be opened around eight or nine. Maybe even earlier. You not only have employees dealing this but you have possible people members of the public who were in that Customer Service area though they may have only been in there briefly. Possible hearing gun shots and wondering what was going on. You have been talking about human indication. Thats rob has been talking to the people out there. Some of the employees who walked outs of the building. Some of the people looking for loved ones to make sure that everybody was okay. Even if they heard from them to try to connect. We wanted to check in with you now to see what you have learned. Reporter first of all we are outside the command post and you can see there is still a heavy command presence. We have seen officers, a lot of them in plains clothes going in and out inside of the building thats sort of beyond where the Main Command Center fire trucks. On the other side scatter add round the corners our family members and they have loved ones in the people that i talked to. They have had sons work inside and employees are young. 19, 20, 25 years old. Now they say that they are okay. They werent hurt. The mothers havent been able to contact them. They are very anxious. They have been complaining that they havent been receiving any official updates, either from ups or from the city. So they are getting a little bit frustrated but obviously relieved that their loved ones okay. Now earlier we spoke to a ups driver who was just coming in. He was about to go inside for a meeting when he heard what happened. Lets listen to that now. Reporter what did you hear . Six to seven shots. Bam, bam, that was an automatic gun. Reporter did you hear anyone say anything . No. I just started screaming get out, get out. Gun fire. Gun shots, go, go, go. Everybody started running. Reporter what has it been like for you . Shocking. Your life go through so quick. Normally you think about your kids, thinking about your co workers. The people you that know and care about. My co workers, my family. Everybody. Reporter and we are back to a live picture and what you see those uniforms, those are ups workers. Just in the last several secs, they were brought out from where they had been. Maybe about a half block away. They are gathering at a 76 gas station. Not sure what it is that they are doing. If they will be released to go home to their families at this point. You can see even more are starting to join them. It would appear a lot of the investigative part of this any way is beginning to wind down. It certainly will be good for the families of the workers to be able to see them and give them a hug and know they are okay and also the sadness that not everybody is making it out okay. Thats the latest from here. Back to you. I know its very, very early. Do you have any indication of if that facility will be open and operating tomorrow . I cant personally imagine it would be but do you have the final word on that yet . Reporter they havent said. They are supposed to update in an hour or so. Maybe we would learn that. I would think maybe its possible, part of it perhaps the whole thing could be considered a crime scene and if so it would be a rather large crime scene. That maybe would just be know not possible to sort of get it ready by then. To have the police do all they have to do and to figure out what happened. I dont know the answer. It would seem unlikely at this point. The big crime scene and so much to do. Reporter certainly the logistics is one thing and the emotional toll to walk back into that building is another. Thank you so much. Reporting for us bringing us the stories of those who were inside the building at the time. Bringingus accounts of people who said they heard the multiple gun shots. I want to bring you a couple bits of news. We are just more than an hour from what we expect to be the next live briefing from police. We brought you tony chaplain this morning. That was part of the continuous live coverage since nine on this shooting. We now that San Francisco police are saying that they have yet to release the identity of the gunman. This is important because some outlets reporting a name. We are confirming it with police to make sure we get it right. The gunman is dead. At that point sort of the importance of report, the name may change. Ups has confirmed was one of their own workers who opened fire inside the ups facility. We are getting that from sfpd. We are going to bring you that 1 00 oclock News Conference live and here we are. This happened at nine. Several hours after the fact we still see from this live picture an extremely heavy police presence. We still see many, many ups workers. Thats on the right hand side of the screen displaced. Outside. Waiting. I know there is a church nearby that they are being lead to get back with their families. Its still a very active scene. Absolutely. Its changed and its a big scene. Paul is out there. When you initially got in you were on the freeway above. Have you gone down below but really there are so many different sides of activity going on. We have seen them on the roof and all round you. What are you seeing from your Vantage Point now . Reporter i apologize. I was trying to confirm that name. We have had that name for an hour but we want to make sure its right. You can see we have been out here for hours. We were live on the air when the swat officers came back outside. It seems like it was all clear. They had all been marched up top of the hill where they are debriefing, having conversations to talk about what they saw inside. Also up the street is where we saw the two, i can see a gurney being transported up there. Its just beyond the red truck. There is a gurney. Thats the bodies, they are covered. We know who we first arrived there were two bodies covered on the street and it was on 17th street at the intersection of san bru in, o. Those with the two we are hear that the officers saw when they first came on scene before they went inside and confronted the gunman who later killed himself. As i said about the last 20 minutes we were live on the air the swat 23rd map then will be an open and active acception. There were officers ton of the rooftop as they tried to figure out what was going on. The officers arent as tense as theyw. The swat vehicle has left which leads us to believe that everything is fine out here. Scene was active. They are still making sure that everything is correct and everything is done before they can go back in there. Im told this building, being a building that deal was packages. They are also ready for suspicious packages. You wonder that there has to be a lot of cameras. There have been a lot of cameras probably reporting everything ha happened. With suspicious packages possibly coming through there. Also probably protected prepared for those kind of situations. This is a well protected building but though it was one of their own who did this, killed three people this morning that may have been let down. Again out here at this hour. We are at 16th and san bruno. The officers have cleared out. The swat team has left the area and a few moments ago i did see a gurney pushed across the street. We will try to figure out more information about that. We do have it now confirm that police have confirmed the gunman is jimmy lamb. He is an employee. He was an employee of ups. Jimmy lamb is the name we received. Thats the name we confirmed for you at this hour. Jimmy lamb hot and killed three people and later killed himself and injured two others. And jimmy lamb lived in San Francisco right . Reporter that part im still working on. I was told that the person is a bay area resident. I cant for sure say but i believe thats the reality of it. All right. Paul chambers. Thank you for that. We have the new information. The identity of the sheeter as jimmy lamb. We know that we have the three confirmed deaths. The shooter is the 4th confirmed death. Police chief saying he turned the gun on himself when confronted by police and then the press conference we are waiting for in the next hour. We will bring that to you live right here on ktvu. Thank you for joining us in what has been a long and upsetting morning for so many. Again to recap if you are just joining us its still an active scene at the ups building in San Francisco. These are live pictures and some aspects of this have not changed. We see youa number of Police Vehicles and officers. Yellow police tape be blocking off the street. The shelter in place that was issued this morning immediately after the shooting has been lifted but its still a very active scene and you are urged to stay away if you can. Six people shot today at the ups building by an employee. Four people are dead. That number includes the gunman who shot and killed himself upon being confronted by San Francisco police. We have two people who are injured in this shooting. They are being treated at San Francisco General Hospital. We are expecting a briefing by San Francisco police in the next hour.
