Knew this morning the fire destroyed a building in downtown lafayette that housed several businesses including the popular restaurant, and the chamber of commerce. The building was already engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived. Allie rasmus is in lafayette trying to get an idea of where you are and firefighters say it is a total loss. Good morning. Reporter yes, you can see why and here we are downtown lafayette. This building was at the lafayette circle. You can see it is a total loss with lots of damage and you can see the inside of the building exposed. According to the fire marshal, at least nine businesses including the restaurant and the Lafayette Chamber of commerce. The fire began around midnight growing quickly in the fire marshal said they had an initial report that the fire may have started in the restaurant on the ground floor in the back of the building. This is a twostory building and it was two buildings connected by the breezeway and both of those buildings are destroyed. At one point the people in the Apartment Building next door were evacuated as a precaution. The firefighters were very concerned about the fire spreading to other businesses and to the homes nearby. The Wood Building part of it was part of the reason we think that the fire probably spread quickly. It was not covered in stucco or that type of thing, and it was an iconic building if you will in lafayette. Once that fire took cold it took cold and did a lot of damage. Reporter the flames from the fire were visible from far away, as far away as highway 4 in pittsburg. They did get help from the pittsburg fire crews and they could see the glowing from that far away. The embers from the fire could be seen as far as 2 miles away in the fire marshal said it was lucky they had favorable weather conditions with no wind. Even though the embers spread pretty far around the fire it did not spread to cause other problems. Now that the sun has come up and looking at daylight you can still see the fire crews are putting out the hotspots and still dousing the building with water using the ladder truck. Once they figure out how stable the building is they will send investigators into the building to figure out where that fire started and how it started but that is all still under investigation. Allie rasmus in lafayette, thank you. The restaurant that burned in lafayette overnight is the same one where the huge tree toppled over in january during the winter storm.
