Mayor lee is here, joe atmosphere hayes white joanne hayeswhite and chief greg suhr. Minutes ago, they raised the flag to half staff. That flag will remain there at half staff for the re for the rest of the day. This is just one of several ceremonies taking place. This is one of the more somber ceremonies. This takes place early in the morning every year since 2001. But talking about the other ceremonies taking place, theres one going on at 10 00 this morning. This one at union city for the flight 93 memorial. This member is very impress memorial is very impressive. Ive covered this as well. This has 40 stones there to commemorate the 40 victims, crew members as well as passengers. That crash in pennsylvania. We talked about the new memorial that opened up yesterday. In the south bay, firefighters are remembering those who gave their lives in the line of duty. They held a moment of silence minutes ago at the exact moment the first plane hit the first tower. Volunteers also meeting at San Jose City hall. At 8 00 this morning, for a national day of service to commemorate 9 11, same ceremony also taking place in san mateo as well. Right now, they are reading the names of those First Responders and firefighters who responded on september 11th, 2001. We are expected to hear from the mayor, from the fire chief and the police chief later on this morning. Also talk to others who remember that day. A lot of us remember where we were and what we were doing just like it happened yesterday. Still very still resonates for many of us on september 11th. Guys, back to you. Brian, i dont know if any of them are behind you, but we know a number of people from the bay area, fire, police, other crews responded to september 11th in the hours and days after the attacks. Reporter thats true. When i covered this last year, i spoke to a firefighter several, in fact, were sent to new york city. But a lot of them were on stand by that day. If you remember that day, there was a lot of uncertainty, a lot of like landmarks that had to be watched over. It wasnt clear how far this event was going to affect other cities, not just new york city. So a lot of people, you know, remember where they were and what we were doing. A lot of us in the News Business were working that day can covering this event that day covering this event. This affects a lot of us here. The other goal, make sure a newer generation its been 14 years since this happened so theres several young people who dont know what happened on september 11th, 2001. These are why the ceremonies continue to take place and hopefully they remember what happened on that very tragic day. Back to you. Brian, before you go . How are you doing . Your friend was on the plane that went down in shanksville, pennsylvania. Reporter thats right. A friend of mine. We worked together at in san diego. We worked together as a janba juice dash at a jamba juice at a jamba juice and we got word that he was on flight 93. We were all confused. A lot of us were trying that day because we didnt know what to do. I remember closing the store and telling people go home. You need to be with your families and your loved ones. It was unclear. You know, we have moved forward as a country. But hopefully the ceremonies, again, the goal is the younger people knowing about this. A lot of you guys were working in the News Business at that time as well. Oh, yeah, indeed. Thank you for letting us ask you about that. Brian flores in San Francisco, well talk to you later. Reporter okay. Well, president obama took part in a somber ceremony on the white house lawn earlier this morning marking september 11th. The president and first lady, michelle obama, put their hands over their hearts as taps were played. About 200 members of the white house staff gathered on the white house lawn for this very special ceremony. Well, american troops in afghanistan also paying tribute to those who died during the september 11th terror attacks. After a moment of silence, there was a prayer and a wreath laying ceremony this morning in kabul, afghanistan. General John Campbell told the troops its important to reflect on what happened 14 years ago today to see how far weve come. Weve been showing you all morning how so many are mourning the victims. Well tell you how many are turning this very dark day in americas history into a day of service. Good morning. We are looking at a commute that is still busy. Its not great. But its a little better than it was the last few days. I will tell you where its still slow, though, coming up. Well, for many, you night need the ac for another day. Higher clouds are on the increase but for others, the fog is in and its cool. Feel ol racing towards us. We didnt need a loan. We needed shortterm funding. Fast. Our amex helped us fill the orders. Just like that. You cant predict it, but you can be ready. Another step on the journey. Will you be ready when growth presents itself. Realize your buying power at open. Com. Welcome back to mornings on 2. 7 14. Changes may be coming soon to the Ferry Service in tiburon. The tiburon ferry has serious money problems and it may be taken over. Ktvu fox 2s alex savidge joining us live. How might commuters be affected pie by this. Reporter good morning. Commuters have quite a few concerns about service potentially being scaled back. Right now, the tiburon ferry, it makes seven round trips a day leaving from the dock here in downtown tiburon and heading into San Francisco. But the private company that operates this ferry is losing money and it may have to cut back to just one round trip a day that is unless they are saved by a takeover from the Golden Gate Bridge district which is mulling the possibility of taking over this particular ferry run. According to a report in the San Francisco chronicle, the blue and gold fleet is facing rising operating costs and has an aging vessel. The one vessel needs to be replaced. The ferry carries about 225,000 passengers every year. Later this morning, the Golden Gate Bridge districts board will be deciding whether to move forward with a takeover of the tiburon ferry and look and see what the possibilities would be. We talked with regular riders this morning. They are hoping that some sort of a deal gets worked out that can prevent service cutbacks. That wouldnt work for anyone because they fill these boats. You know, not this one necessarily but the later boats get filled. They wouldnt have enough space to accommodate all of the commuters. Reporter right now, golden gate ferries already make runs from marin county to between marin county and San Francisco but right now they only have stops in sausalito and larkspur. But the board of directors will be studying the cost, the availability of boats and also the labor issues involved with taking over this privatelyrun ferry. But commuters all they say they do not want to see any of those cutbacks. They dont want to see fewer runs made between San Francisco and tiburon. Back to you. All right, alex savidge, thank you. Never commuted by ferry but i imagine, sal, its a lot more pleasant than behind the wheel, gripping the wheel inching forward. They have a bar on that thing, too. Lets be straight most people dont but on the evening on the way home, it comes into play. It comes into play. On a friday, i can imagine how it might. Especially on a friday. Gasia, you and i think alike. Lets start with the morning commute. You might want to take the coffee on the on the road. Highway 24, a little bit of slow traffic building. This is beginning to be the peak of the commute. Ive noticed things are a little better today than they were the last other days of this week. Also looking at the commute on 880 further south from 238. Its very thick down to about the fremont area, then it breaks up. There is a minor accident near stevenson. Its not major but theres slow traffic. And in san jose, 101 is slow. You can see 280 and 85 are a little better trying to get in the valley that way. Lets bring steve in. Thank you, sal. We have an increase in the fog. The higher clouds are rolling in. Big change for many. Thats much bigger than [foghorn] i hope thats a foghorn. I believe it is. Thats much thicker than yesterday. Higher clouds. 60s, 70s, coast and bay. 90s to near 100 inland. Waiting on the breeze. Thats the only thing that hasnt kicked in. You need to see 20 plus. Higher clouds on the move. Already 70. I dont think it will get below that for brentwood and livermore. South at 13 wont do it. 25, 30 would. That might happen later today. More likely overnight tomorrow. The higher clouds associated with what was once hurricane linda, Tropical Storm moving up. Could be highbased shower activity. Lower layers of the atmosphere are extremely dry. This will add a lot of humidity to the mix and keep our ways way up tonight. You can see cloud cover is moving in. If we can get enough of that soon enough, might take five or six degrees some of the highs. But the humidity factor is going up. It has been very dry this week. 60s, 708 60s, 70s, 80s on the move. Much cooler for almost everybody as we head into the weekend, especially sunday and then monday, look at that. 70s. Nice. Might be some rain in the north bay on thursday, who i would make sense. When you get this kind of an extreme, usually there is a following extreme somewhere down the road. All right. Like it, steve. Thank you. A coldhearted crime. Were talking about what happened in oakland. Coming up in 20 minutes, a recent theft at a nonprofit that helps children. I love this next story. Were talking about leftovers that dont go to waste. How volunteers are making sure extra restaurant food gets to those who need it most. Welcome back. Its 7 22. Lets listen in. I do, for sure. Im working and continue to work with your chief and commission to make sure that this department and you in particular have the resources, the support, but most importantly, that the public appreciates the work that you do every single day. Whether its responding to a fire, whether there is an accident on the street or whether you are on a very daily basis, sometimes an hourly basis, treating those in need on our very streets, we know you are there, we know you are ready, and we know that you respond professionally. Listening into mayor ed lee addressing the firefighters. You see joanne hayeswhite behind him. So far, at least 120 people have signed the petition. People in the neighborhood plan to present the petition to the city council next month. Oaklands Public Works Department says the city spends more than 5 million every year cleaning up Illegal Dumping. 7 26. Fresh food left over but not lost. There is a program in marin county helping to save and serve thousands of pounds of food that might otherwise be thrown away. Extrafood. Org recovers what restaurants, stores, even hospitals dont use and cant use and they deliver it to shelters. On any day, turkey, vegetables, potatoes, they might be packed up for programs that feed the hungry. First started donating, i thought i was gonna have resistance i thought there was gonna be resistance. Everyone is thrilled. Who of edible 40 of edible food across the country goes to waste. Up next, how the fbi was able to catch a man planning an attack. Were looking at the commuters heading to marin county. There is a lot of them at the toll plaza. If this is your commute it could take you ten minutes to get through to the toll plaza. Its been one hot week for many. We have a lot of changes on the way. Low clouds, high clouds. Well talk that on this friday. Robert t. Lane. Brendan mark lang. Listening in as more names are being read. Those who died on september 11th in new york city. Many of them in the twin towers. Just a moment ago, there was another moment of silence observed. The sixth this morning, marking the moment of north tower fell. Six bells rang on stage. People paused from the hours long task. That is what it is reading the names of those who died. So many people are saying i come here every year marking the place and day i lost my dad, my mom, my son. Im gasia mikaelian. Good morning. Im dave clark. Were also talking about your weather, which is a big part of your weather, too, and traffic. Steve paulson, you have beauty shots in the sky. A lot of clouds and tropical clouds. Change is finally here. Beautiful sunrise for many unless you are stuck in the fog. Some people are. The only thing missing for a cooldown is the sea breeze. We are looking at the commute here on interstate 880. Its already beginning to slow northbound as you drive up to downtown oakland. You will see some slow traffic there. Well talk about southbound in a moment. When you get to the bay bridge, the jam from 880 down to the bay bridge, i would never recommend that ramp. Its always crowded. There is a lot of merging, cutting people off. I would suggest approaching from 58, 0, at least there is a lot more 580 at least theres a lot more more activity. It will be slow through union city. We had anker an earlier problem in fremont. Traffic will be busy heading all the way to san jose. 7 34. Back to the desk. 7 34. But they are doing their best to get all of the shoes in time for their season. You would think who would do Something Like that . Its one thing i dont want to advocate going to a store and taking shoes. But you are taking shoes from children who might not otherwise have them, trying to do something positive and healthy. The kids need the Running Shoes to participate in these program. They cant do it without it. Many of them, you know, cant afford to get them on their own. They are putting a plea out. The lives of these three have lived since that time, so incredible. Its so incredible. Were live at the state capitol. This is where the parade will end. It will go from 12 00 to 1 00 today. Not that long of a parade route. Just a couple of blocks but they plan to drive it very, very slow and make their way back out here to the capitol where the assembly and senate will take a rare break together during a very busy week at the capitol and come out to honor the three who, of course, have become internationally known. Anthony sadler, and the other two men, they said, we should do a european trip together. They got the trip together very quickly and were having the time of their lives when on that fateful day, they did what they basically had been growing up to do, do the right thing.
