Flames are affecting the morning commute . Thats right. We are looking at live pictures from sky fox on the left and this is video on the right of the fire earlier. The townhomes you see on the left were adjacent to the fire. This is macarthur boulevard near 580 as gasia mentioned. Earlier in the morning flames were clearly visable. Most of us who got to work early could see the fire from miles away. These are pictures showing the firefighters working on the townhomes that were exposed to the fire building. These townhomes had been evacuated and thats why firefighters report that no one was hurt. Nevertheless, extensive damage to these townhomes. They are still fighting that fire. The construction site across the street is a complete loss. Thats going to be a big mess. And sab pablo avenue into this area, which normally carries a lot of traffic, is shut down in the area. Its a good area to avoid this morning. So we want to let you know about that. These are pictures that came in on social media of the huge flames and fires. We found them on twitter, on facebook, et cetera, as people woke up to the fire and the fire units, which, by the way, came in from all over Alameda County. Hayward units. We had berkeley, oakland, emeryville, alameda sent a fire truck. We have a look at some of these. This is a live look from sky fox. You can see the big area here. Its a good area, obviously, to avoid. Pg e has deployed crews in the area. This fire is going to be going on for a long time. Lets go to union city. Alameda county firefighters at the scene of a fire in union city. This is video taken earlier from sky fox 2 next to interstate 880. The fire is contained a warehouse and overhaul is in progress. You can see it was apparently a pet boys warehouse here. Not a major fire, but it took units from union city and hayward to contain that. Lets go to the traffic. A look at the bay bridge toll plaza. Backed up for a normal delay 20 to 25 minutes. I also want to show you the traffic in hayward is slow on the san mateo and 880. Lets go to steve. All right, sal, well, we have another cool pattern in place. It looks like its going to last most of the week and into the weekend as well. Even cooler towards friday and saturday. I know its the inland temps that are starting to take the tumble. San jose officially 75. Whats average . 84. Pretty close on the lows. But below on both. Record 103 in 1905. Low clouds and fog now. The coverage is not as extensive as it was yesterday, although the north bay looks to be mostly cloudy and there is plenty of low clouds around. More breaks towards the south. The water temps cooled off. 52 yesterday bodega bay. 50 today. Half moon bay down, too. Monterey down two. Average about 50 to 57. So they are close to slightly below. There is a decent breeze for most. Not for all. Its an onshore breeze. 50s and 40s. There are a few 40s in the mix this morning, especially in the east bay and above los gatos at 59. 59 morgan hill, san martin and gilroy. Mid 50s cupertino, saratoga. A little system ushering in the mauler pattern. So if you like this kind of weather, this week is to your liking. 60s and 70s for many. Well below average. Back to gasia and dave. Back to that fire we have been covering, brian flores is live at the scene with whats changing there. Brian. Reporter residents in the townhome complex, that was next to the one that was burning, they are being allowed back in. I want to show you what the scene looks like right now. Still Alameda County fire crews, oakland fire crews continuing to pour water on top of this sixstory apartment complex that is under construction, but is now pretty much destroyed at this point. I want to show you also, we walked down this street, guys. This is a side street nearby. And were talking about some of the embers that flew from this fire from earlier this morning. We can confirm there were at least two or three structures that were affected by this. We talked to a woman a few minutes ago who said that her backyard, the tree caught on fire and then nearby there was a car that caught on fire as well. But certainly it was in a very busy morning for firefighters this morning. Take a listen to when we first arrived on scene. That was video just when we first arrived here shortly after 4 00 this morning. This fire has been burning since 2 45. Witnesses heard a loud bang and then all of a sudden this apartment complex under construction pretty much lit up like a tinderbox, according to one witness. Earlier this morning we saw several people being evacuated from a nearby townhome complex off 39th and adaline. Some of those residents being allowed to return home. This has been a busy morning for alameda firefighters, oakland firefighters, albany and hayward. Also concern from a nearby crane that had to be stabilized. There was fear of that falling as well. Residents nearby and people who saw the fire were very, very scared. I just came out and i just saw this big flames burning and burning and people screaming. And i was feeling the heat up to here on this block. Reporter now, several resources being used to fight this fire, including the use of a drone, which is run by Alameda County sheriffs. Apparently that drone is looking for any hot spots so that fire crews get a better handle where to pour the water and fight this fire. But as we take it back out here live, this is gonna be several hours until this fire is fully completely contained. They have gotten the upper hand in terms of getting the flames out, but in this area here there is definitely a lot of smoke in this area. A lot of the residents Wearing Masks to protect themselves from breathing in the smoke. I can smell the smoke as we speak. It will be quite a time until this scene is clear. We dont know the cause of how this fire started. Luckily, no injuries reported as well. Brian, i know the fire started at 2 45 this morning. Certainly construction on that building wasnt underway. Do you know whether or not anyone was inside the building at the time, maybe who should or shouldnt have been there . Reporter we talked to some construction workers. You are going to hear what they have to say about it in the next hour. But basically what they said was that several of them left their tools there from overnight. One construction worker that we spoke with says just a couple of days ago, at least on the 4th of july weekend, the superintendents office, which is on the bottom floor of this apartment complex that was under construction, was burglarized and several tools were taken. Now, whether or not that has a connection to the fire that happened this morning we dont know. Thats what they tell us this morning. We are going to talk with some officials this morning, see what they have to say about it. Thats what were hearing in terms of people maybe not being allowed to be in this area around this time. Back to you. Good to know. Thank you, brian. Time is 7 08. Some cars parked next to the burning building also caught fire, and during our live report earlier one of the tires on the car exploded. Hillary clinton did not mention the issue while she was campaigning yesterday in charlotte, North Carolina with president obama, but her campaign released a statement saying, quote, it was a mistake to use her personal email and she would not do it again. Just showed you a live picture of the scene of that big fire in emeryville by the oakland boundary. Sal, from what i could see, traffic was okay in the area. But i know you know best. Thats right. When the fire was burning earlier, gasia and dave, it was a traffic curiosity. Now its just smoke. So drivers are getting by without major slowdowns. However, san pablo avenue in that area on surface road is an area to avoid. There is a lot of Fire Equipment in the area and there are going to be delays. The freeway traffic on 580, 980 and 24 seem to be okay. Can you clearly see smoke rising. It doesnt appear traffic is slowing in the area. Lets look at the bay bridge. There is slow traffic here. Its backed up for 20 to 25 minutes. If you are taking the san mateo bridge from hayward to the peninsula, there is slow traffic mostly on 92 before you get onto the span. Dumbarton bridge is okay. No slowdowns into san jose. 7 19. Lets go to steve for todays forecast. Thank you. Good morning. Very cool good morning, i might add. They are completely different this year. 50 to 55. 56. They actually cooled off in the last this hours. Bodega bay was 52 yesterday. 50 now. Everythings in place to get that fog machine rolling along, especially when you get a system in the west. We have lost some support, cool air aloft and the inland temps continue to come down. So its a fight between those two. The fog is winning out. Especially the breezy. In the Santa Clara Valley the smell of garlic from gilroy to san jose. 50s on the temps. San rafael 51. Napa 48. Calistoga hills 47 degrees. Sebastapol 52. Bodega bay a brisk 49 degrees with the water temp at 50. 39 truckee. 61 reno. 54 down in monterey. Can you see a little dip right there. Come celebrate new beginnings like hyperspace mountain. And premiering this summer, frozen, a musical spectacular. Plus an all new soarin. So come to the place where summer dazzles. Our big story this morning is a huge fire in emeryville right near the boundary with oakland. From the roof cam on top of ktvu studios in oaklands Jack London Square you can see smoke rising from the scene of the fire. On the righthand side of the screen thats the Apartment Building under construction that burned. In the very center of your screen are some townhomes, a couple of which have been affected by flames. They started on fire due to the heat from the betting next door. To give you a better read, if you are on 580 eastbound heading from oakland to berkeley, this is on your right hand side. It is before you get to some major emeryville landmarks, if you will. This is before the home depot, before ikea, before bay street, emeryville. Its right across the street from the pack and save Grocery Store there, which should help give you a better idea of the area were talking about. We will bring in our crews in a minute. It is the big story of the day this wednesday, july 6. I am gasia mikaelian. I am dave clark. My mic is now working. Lets go to alex savidge. Youre talking to the fire chief. And i know people in the area, they are worried about their homes, alex . Reporter yeah, you know, folks are worried. Especially early this morning. A lot of people were very concerned about the flying embers. You will hear from one man in just a moment who lives close by who woke up to this fire. You can imagine how concerned he was and so many others were. Got an update from the chief a short time ago. We talked about this starting with this complex under construction. Its behind us here just beyond some trees and homes. The original fire was an apartment complex that is still under construction. What happened a short time ago is that the fire did, in fact, spread to a neighboring townhome complex thats just next door. That is a complex where people are living. Now, the good news is that those townhomes, they were evacuated very early this morning as this fire broke out. As we understand it, the fire started about 2 45 this morning at this complex that is under construction here in emeryville right at the corner of 38th street near the corner of 38th street and san pablo. You had crews coming in from all over the east bay to help fight this fire. That included crews from the Alameda County Fire Department, berkeley, oakland, hayward, albany, among others, trying to get a handle on this thing. It ended up spreading to the townhome complex just next door. But the complex was cleared out. It was evacuated before the fire spread there to three of the townhomes. Now, let me let you listen here to a gentleman i spoke with who lives about a block away from here in a home that is just a block away. He says the embers were flying towards his place when he looked out the window early this morning. I go, okay, forget 911. They know somethings going on. I got to protect my house and threw some clothes on, went outside and made sure no embers were on my roof. Reporter another concern initially for fire crews early this morning was the large crane thats here in the middle of this construction site. Initially, i was told by the fire chief, the alameda fire chief, that that crane, crews noticed that it was swaying a little bit. There were some concerns about its stability because, obviously, its right there in the middle of this construction site where the, you know, this fire had basically destroyed this entire building. So they were concerned about the statability of the crane. That does not appear to be an issue anymore. That was a concern early on. This is very interesting, because this has become they are using some using technology here. They are using a drone. The Alameda County Sheriffs Office drone is up in the air above this fire here. Can you see what theyre doing. They are monitoring this fire. Monitoring the hot spots using a thermoimage camera. They can try to put crews in the right places to make sure the fire doesnt spread. That is the big concern here because it did spread just a short time ago. As we reported, it spread from the original complex under construction to that neighboring townhome complex that had previously been evacuated. Again, the last word we got was that three townhomes were burned in some form or fashion. Those had already been evacuated. Nobody hurt out here. The cause of this fire still under investigation. Well, alex, taking over the traffic angle of this, because a lot of people have wondered exactly where the fire is, i am going to put up a map of the fire. Its right there near west macarther and 39th and right there in this area of oakland and emeryville. Those streets ring a bell to you, thats where the fire was. San pablo avenue is blocked by Fire Equipment and thats causing a delay in the area. This is a live picture of the fire from our emeryville camera, and 580 nearby, the macarthur freeway between 980 and the maze not affected. Traffic is driving by. People, obviously, being curious may slow it a little bit. This is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. This is backed up for about a 15 to to 20minute delay. In the south bay we have been watching kind of a busy commute here. 101 slow from sunnyvale to mountain view. 85 and 280 are slow. A little bit lighter than usual, but still not a great commute in the Silicon Valley. 7 35. Lets bring steve in with todays weather. All right, sal. Thank you, sir. Is my mic working . Clear for some. Foggy for others. A cool, cool pattern for sure. I mean, just i mean, there is enough fog out there and some 40s to take the edge off. Just enough drizzle in beautiful sonoma to mess up the pollen. Have been saving it on my car. San jose running well below average. 75 forecast high. 56 low. Average 84 58. Below on both. 103 in 1905. 43 in 1902 the record low. Low clouds and fog. Chewed up a little bit yesterday by a northwest breeze, but that at the same time creates the upwe willing which gives us colder water temps. 62 brentwood. 51 novato. 52 San Francisco. That observation 57 palo alto. Napa airport 53. I saw a 48 not far away. Upper 50s, low 60s to mid 50s. Very cool for some. Lafayette 52. Pleasanton a soft 60. Martinez at 58 degrees. There is still a component of a westerly breeze for many or a westsouthwest. Oakland airport gusts to 22. 16 concord. San jose, Santa Clara Valley its a southwest breeze. That little dip right there, that helps. But another system dropping which will be stronger, deeper, which will slide into Northern California, maybe bring rain to shasta. I would think north of ukiah late friday, saturday. For us it will keep this pattern going. Keep that wind machine rolling along as well. So 60s on the temps. 70s. Now 80s for some. Should be warmer than that this time of year. If anything, cooler as we go into the early part of the weekend. Thank you, steve. 7 37. Reporter good morning, guys. Yeah, as you mentioned, it looks like this fire is contained. These brave firefighters from allegedly county, oakland fire just constantly pouring water all morning long. Fortunately, thats not happening right now. You can see a little bit of smoke. If you didnt know what was going on, you might not notice it at this point. 580 looks good. 980 looks good. Those flames could be seen from interstates 580, 880, and highway 24. Ktvus alex savidge continues our Team Coverage. Alex. Reporter good morning to you guys. The word we have here from the allegedly county Fire Department is that they are calling this fire contained this morning, although they are going to be out here for a good portion of the day, as you could imagine, trying to keep an eye on the hot spots. This massive fire is still smoldering. Again it began at a building thats under construction. A fivestory Apartment Building under construction. We will play you some of the video here from early this morning when the fire started about 2 45. Its at a building right at 3800 san pablo avenue right along the emeryvilleoakland border. It began at that building under construction. It grew quickly in size. This fire was so large that other buildings nearby were impacted, including five townhomes that were burned. We also understand an auto body shop on 39th avenue also damaged by the fire. With that being said i want to bring in deputy chief jim call with the allegedly Fire Department. What can you tell me about how this fire impacted nearby buildings this morning . Just due to the fire load, it was stick frame, the building under construction, produced a lot of heat. So the adjoining businesses and residences were exposed to fire and it extended into those causing significant damage. Reporter this was, i know, a frightening situation for the People Living right next door in that townhome complex. The original building, nobody living there. The place under construction. Those townhomes all occupied, and you had to come in this morning and get everybody evacuated quickly. How well did that go . It went really well. That was a top priority, life safety and getting evacuations done. Residents all complied well and got out in a quick and safe manner and we did primary searches to make sure all is clear and went on with the firefighting after we secured the life safety risk. Reporter about 50 people or so had to be evacuated from the townhomes. The good news is nobody was hurt. No injuries that we know of at this point. Where do we go from here . What has to happen through the rest of the day to make sure this fire remains out . We will have a number of crews from oakland Fire Department and Alameda County Fire Department to put out hot spots, keep a close eye on it. We are going to investigate the fire to see if we can find the cause and origin. Its going to be a long process. We will be here well into the evening. Reporter a fire starts inside a building thats under construction and not occupied. Does that raise any red flags . Well, it needs to be investigated. We investigate all our fires the same and try to find the cause and origin. Reporter all right, deputy chief gym call, appreciate you taking the time. This fire began inside that fivestory Apartment Building that was still under construction and the fire so massive in size, the flames so huge you had just that radiant heat and that caught a number of other nearby buildings on fire. Again, we understand now that five townhomes were damaged by the fire. Five neighboring townhomes damaged by the fire. They had been evacuated. We also understand than auto body shop on 39th avenue also was badly damaged in this fire. Crews will be out here for a good portion of the day trying to get this fire fully under control. But at this point they are calling it contained. Alex, quickly, before you go, no injuries reported as far as you know . Reporter no. At this point they have no reported injuries. So that is certainly the good news, especially when you have a fire of this size right next door to a fully occupied townhome unit. Townhome complex, i should say. They got everybody out there of this in a quick manner. We should point out all of those evacuees, about 50 people had to be evacuated. They are getting help by the red cross. 8 33. Northbound 680 on the danville area, a crash and traffic is a little bit slow. This might catch you off guard because you might think its pretty light. No. 680 is a little bit slow recovering from some earlier problems in the danville area. So add time there coming from san ramon or walnut creek heading north and south. 8 36.
