KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 7am July 6, 2016

Flames are affecting the morning commute . Thats right. We are looking at live pictures from sky fox on the left and this is video on the right of the fire earlier. The townhomes you see on the left were adjacent to the fire. This is macarthur boulevard near 580 as gasia mentioned. Earlier in the morning flames were clearly visable. Most of us who got to work early could see the fire from miles away. These are pictures showing the firefighters working on the townhomes that were exposed to the fire building. These townhomes had been evacuated and thats why firefighters report that no one was hurt. Nevertheless, extensive damage to these townhomes. They are still fighting that fire. The construction site across the street is a complete loss. Thats going to be a big mess. And sab pablo avenue into this area, which normally carries a lot of traffic, is shut down in the area. Its a good area to avoid this morning. So we want to let you know about that. These are pictures that came in on social media of the huge flames and fires. We found them on twitter, on facebook, et cetera, as people woke up to the fire and the fire units, which, by the way, came in from all over Alameda County. Hayward units. We had berkeley, oakland, emeryville, alameda sent a fire truck. We have a look at some of these. This is a live look from sky fox. You can see the big area here. Its a good area, obviously, to avoid. Pg e has deployed crews in the area. This fire is going to be going on for a long time. Lets go to union city. Alameda county firefighters at the scene of a fire in union city. This is video taken earlier from sky fox 2 next to interstate 880. The fire is contained a warehouse and overhaul is in progress. You can see it was apparently a pet boys warehouse here. Not a major fire, but it took units from union city and hayward to contain that. Lets go to the traffic. A look at the bay bridge toll plaza. Backed up for a normal delay 20 to 25 minutes. I also want to show you the traffic in hayward is slow on the san mateo and 880. Lets go to steve. All right, sal, well, we have another cool pattern in place. It looks like its going to last most of the week and into the weekend as well. Even cooler towards friday and saturday. I know its the inland temps that are starting to take the tumble. San jose officially 75. Whats average . 84. Pretty close on the lows. But below on both. Record 103 in 1905. Low clouds and fog now. The coverage is not as extensive as it was yesterday, although the north bay looks to be mostly cloudy and there is plenty of low clouds around. More breaks towards the south. The water temps cooled off. 52 yesterday bodega bay. 50 today. Half moon bay down, too. Monterey down two. Average about 50 to 57. So they are close to slightly below. There is a decent breeze for most. Not for all. Its an onshore breeze. 50s and 40s. There are a few 40s in the mix this morning, especially in the east bay and above los gatos at 59. 59 morgan hill, san martin and gilroy. Mid 50s cupertino, saratoga. A little system ushering in the mauler pattern. So if you like this kind of weather, this week is to your liking. 60s and 70s for many. Well below average. Back to gasia and dave. Back to that fire we have been covering, brian flores is live at the scene with whats changing there. Brian. Reporter residents in the townhome complex, that was next to the one that was burning, they are being allowed back in. I want to show you what the scene looks like right now. Still Alameda County fire crews, oakland fire crews continuing to pour water on top of this sixstory apartment complex that is under construction, but is now pretty much destroyed at this point. I want to show you also, we walked down this street, guys. This is a side street nearby. And were talking about some of the embers that flew from this fire from earlier this morning. We can confirm there were at least two or three structures that were affected by this. We talked to a woman a few minutes ago who said that her backyard, the tree caught on fire and then nearby there was a car that caught on fire as well. But certainly it was in a very busy morning for firefighters this morning. Take a listen to when we first arrived on scene. That was video just when we first arrived here shortly after 4 00 this morning. This fire has been burning since 2 45. Witnesses heard a loud bang and then all of a sudden this apartment complex under construction pretty much lit up like a tinderbox, according to one witness. Earlier this morning we saw several people being evacuated from a nearby townhome complex off 39th and adaline. Some of those residents being allowed to return home. This has been a busy morning for alameda firefighters, oakland firefighters, albany and hayward. Also concern from a nearby crane that had to be stabilized. There was fear of that falling as well. Residents nearby and people who saw the fire were very, very scared. I just came out and i just saw this big flames burning and burning and people screaming. And i was feeling the heat up to here on this block. Reporter now, several resources being used to fight this fire, including the use of a drone, which is run by Alameda County sheriffs. Apparently that drone is looking for any hot spots so that fire crews get a better handle where to pour the water and fight this fire. But as we take it back out here live, this is gonna be several hours until this fire is fully completely contained. They have gotten the upper hand in terms of getting the flames out, but in this area here there is definitely a lot of smoke in this area. A lot of the residents Wearing Masks to protect themselves from breathing in the smoke. I can smell the smoke as we speak. It will be quite a time until this scene is clear. We dont know the cause of how this fire started. Luckily, no injuries reported as well. Brian, i know the fire started at 2 45 this morning. Certainly construction on that building wasnt underway. Do you know whether or not anyone was inside the building at the time, maybe who should or shouldnt have been there . Reporter we talked to some construction workers. You are going to hear what they have to say about it in the next hour. But basically what they said was that several of them left their tools there from overnight. One construction worker that we spoke with says just a couple of days ago, at least on the 4th of july weekend, the superintendents office, which is on the bottom floor of this apartment complex that was under construction, was burglarized and several tools were taken. Now, whether or not that has a connection to the fire that happened this morning we dont know. Thats what they tell us this morning. We are going to talk with some officials this morning, see what they have to say about it. Thats what were hearing in terms of people maybe not being allowed to be in this area around this time. Back to you. Good to know. Thank you, brian. Time is 7 08. Some cars parked next to the burning building also caught fire, and during our live report earlier one of the tires on the car exploded. Good morning. This fire started roughly around 2 45 this morning. Were [explosion]. We were watching that. That happened during brians life report earlier this morning. We are going to continue to follow this story through the morning. We will bring you another update later in our mornings on 2. Well, meantime in the south bay there is a scary situation. Shots are being fired at cars along a busy road in south san jose. Now the police are asking for help to find the shooter. Ktvus janine de la vega joining us live now. Youre in san jose and you have been out talking to people about this. Janine. Reporter yeah. And the people i have been speaking to this morning feel sort of helpless. I mean, blossom hill row, it is very well traveled. Lots of businesses along here. So far there have been fourcar shootings here. Lets go to a map that shows this area in south san jose where these are occurring. Can you see its close to 101 and blossom here near poughkeepsie and monterey roads. Police say the shootings are occurring at around 12 30 a. M. Everything else about them appears to be random. The drivers are just driving along with suddenly their car is hit with a bullet. The latest happened on saturday. Police say a female driver was hurt by shrapnel or glass that his her car. In june, two other vehicles were shot at with a single round, and in those incidents we know that one of the male drivers suffered a grade wound. And before that there was a shooting in may where the driver was uninjured. It was scary. People, you know, yeah, that people would actually, you know, just do that. Hurt people randomly. You have to be more aware. Pay attention to your surroundings and hope for the best, i guess. Reporter police have stepped up patrols in those areas, but they need help in identifying the suspect responsible. They are asking anyone with information or who may have witnessed any of the incidents to give them a call. Investigators do not want this to escalate more than it already has. Dave. Janine de la vega in san jose. Thank you. Time is 7 11. Happening today the San Francisco Police Commission is set to geton update on its search for a new place chief. The Police Commission that hired the firm last month, its expected to tell a threeperson committee today about its progress. Toney chaplin has been leading the department in the wake. Greg suhrs abrupt resignation in may. The final decision will be up to the Police Commission and mayor ed lee. The fbi says there will be no criminal charges for Hillary Clinton for mishandling classified information while she was secretary of state. Yesterday fbi director james comey, and you saw him here live on mornings on 2, delivered the results of a year long resignation. He criticized clinton for sending state Department Email on a private server at her home. Many of them contained classified information at the time they were sent. We cannot find a case that would support bringing criminal charges on these facts. Only a very small number of the emails here containing classified information indicated the presence of classified information. Hillary clinton did not mention the issue while she was campaigning yesterday in charlotte, North Carolina with president obama, but her campaign released a statement saying, quote, it was a mistake to use her personal email and she would not do it again. It also said that mrs. Clinton was glad this matter is now resolved. Well, meantime, donald trump last night at a Campaign Rally praised former iraqi dictator saddam hussein. Saddam hussein was a bad guy, right . Really bad guy. You know what he did well . He killed terrorists. He did that so good. They didnt read him the rights. They didnt talk. They were terrorists. It was over. Well, Hillary Clintons campaign released a statement about Donald Trumps remarks saying, trumps, quote, cavalier complements for brutal dictators demonstrate how dangerous he would be as commander in. We are following that massive fire in a building under construction in emeryville near the boundary with oakland. We learned flames have spread to neighboring buildings. We continue to follow this breaking story. At 7 30 we will bring alex savidge back. He has been talking with the allegedly fire chief. A popular gay bar is in danger of closing. The effort underway to save the bar named the stud. Good morning. We are looking at the morning commute, and right now the traffic in the Silicon Valley is okay. It looks like its a little bit slow on northbound 280. We will take a look at your morning drive to work straight ahead. Well, last july water temps were about 60 degrees. We had some fog, but now they are 50 to 55 and we have a lot of fog. That means a cooler pattern. We will show you how much. Its been 60 years in the making. The Disneyland Resort diamond celebration. Dont miss your chance to see it all dazzle. Come celebrate new beginnings like hyperspace mountain. And premiering this summer, frozen, a musical spectacular. Plus an all new soarin. So come to the place where summer dazzles. At 7 16 we continue to following breaking news. That huge fire that has been burning in emeryville next to oakland. The scene is at san pablo avenue near interstate 580. These are pictures taken later in the morning at its height the fivestory Apartment Building under construction was completely engulfed in flames. The fire started at about 2 45 a. M. At this point the fire has gone six alarms. That mean Fire Departments have been calling in more crews through the morning hours. We know the fire has spread to a nearby residential Building Made up of condos. Also the red cross is on scene and helping all those affected by the fire. This is a live picture now from miles away. A roof cam shows just how much smoke is still coming from that burning building. Thats on the far right of the picture. Can you see here just really the very, you know, almost like toothpicks standing up from what used to be a building. Just to the side of that on the left, those are the townhomes that are involved in the fire as well. Now, a couple of units there also affected by flames. Can you see traffic slowing by the scene. We have two news crews in the area reporting for us live through mornings on 2 and we will continue that for you through the morning. All right. Time is 7 17. Meantime, long time customers of a San Francisco gay bar that has been in business 50 years are rallying to save it. Its named stud. It may be forced to close at 9th and harrison. The buildings new owner, a Real Estate Investment company in pacifica, bought the property two weeks ago. And starting in september, the rent will jump from 3,800 a month to 9,500. Longtime patron and performer meika said he will meet with Community Members to try to form a coop to buy the bar. This is important. I think especially to lbgt people. Now that were allowed to have one, its really important to note the things that still exist that we have had. Supporters are hoping to work with the city of San Francisco to designate the stud as an historic landmark and legacy business in an effort to keep its doors open. 7 18. Just showed you a live picture of the scene of that big fire in emeryville by the oakland boundary. Sal, from what i could see, traffic was okay in the area. But i know you know best. Thats right. When the fire was burning earlier, gasia and dave, it was a traffic curiosity. Now its just smoke. So drivers are getting by without major slowdowns. However, san pablo avenue in that area on surface road is an area to avoid. There is a lot of Fire Equipment in the area and there are going to be delays. The freeway traffic on 580, 980 and 24 seem to be okay. Can you clearly see smoke rising. It doesnt appear traffic is slowing in the area. Lets look at the bay bridge. There is slow traffic here. Its backed up for 20 to 25 minutes. If you are taking the san mateo bridge from hayward to the peninsula, there is slow traffic mostly on 92 before you get onto the span. Dumbarton bridge is okay. No slowdowns into san jose. 7 19. Lets go to steve for todays forecast. Thank you. Good morning. Very cool good morning, i might add. There is plenty of low clouds around and also a rather a bite to the morning air with that breeze. Thats an onshore breeze. Santa clara valley, southern end of the peninsula, its a southeast breeze, but the low clouds have made a good push. Happy summer. No kidding. And plenty of low clouds over the bay and also over oakland and you can combine that with a decent breeze and that means below normal temps. 62 54 for San Francisco. 67 is average. Below on the high side. 94 back in 1921. The record high. Fog and low clouds get chewed up by a northwest breeze. It fills back in. Last july, around the end of june water terms went up to 60 to 62. They are completely different this year. 50 to 55. 56. They actually cooled off in the last this hours. Bodega bay was 52 yesterday. 50 now. Everythings in place to get that fog machine rolling along, especially when you get a system in the west. We have lost some support, cool air aloft and the inland temps continue to come down. So its a fight between those two. The fog is winning out. Especially the breezy. In the Santa Clara Valley the smell of garlic from gilroy to san jose. 50s on the temps. San rafael 51. Napa 48. Calistoga hills 47 degrees. Sebastapol 52. Bodega bay a brisk 49 degrees with the water temp at 50. 39 truckee. 61 reno. 54 down in monterey. Can you see a little dip right there. This time of year, thats all it takes. A stronger system is going to drop in. That will be with us friday, saturday, and inland temps will come down. Low clouds. Windy. Breezy. Cool for some. Below average temps. A 90 out of clear lake. 89 there. 60s, 70s for many. Novato 73. Napa 74. 79 fairfield. That is cool, cool. 81 pittsburg. 78 walnut creek. Alameda 65. Thats it. 70s for morgan hill and gilroy. 67 santa cruz. Cupertino 76. 68 san bruno. 61dc. 71 san mateo. Cool pattern. Maybe just subtle changes. Then it does look cooler friday into saturday. It will be drizzle here and maybe rain up north, but not here. Are you sure its summer, steve . Its summer. Thank you. Time is 7 22. Illegal fireworks in oakland sparked a house fire. Coming up in 20 minutes, the heroic actions of a neighbor to rescued a disabled woman who was trapped inside. Air travelers could see relief soon. The new technology coming to u. S.
