We brought you through mornings on 2. A Police Shooting in san jose. Police shot a man who they say was attacking his mother with an ax this morning. The 9s janine de la vega live at the scene after talking with police just now. Janine. Reporter yes, it is hard for police to make sense of all this. A son attacking his mother. Let me show you what the scene looks like. A heavy Police Presence here. We know that officers were called from all over the city to respond here on lancing. This is right near jarvis close to almaden elementary school. There are detectives here interviewing witnesses who apparently saw a 26yearold man start hitting his mother with an ax. Now, there was two officers who had responded initially to this scene. It unfolded at about 7 10 this morning. And as they were driving up, they got out, they knew there was some sort of domestic incident happening and they actually did also see the suspect swing an ax at his mother. They then said they were forced to shoot at this man to protect the mother. So two officers involved. We have asked, do we know how many shots were fired . And at this point they dont know because this just unfolded in the last hour and a half or so. Both of them are at the hospital. I know we have some video that we took earlier of this incident. Both of them are at the hospital. They are being treated for their injuries. We have asked for an update on their condition and we have not gotten it yet. We dont know if they are critical, if either will survive. We are hoping to know that soon. A very tragic incident in this neighborhood on the out skirts of the cambrian area. They are expected to be out here for quite some time. Again, two officers involved in this shooting here in this neighborhood and if we get more details we will definitely pass them on. Back you to. Janine, is it your understanding that the officers fired while this 26yearold man was allegedly in the act of attacking his mother, or after it happened and there was a confrontation between police and him . Reporter it sounds like it happened during the act. One of the questions asked of the lieutenant was were there any verbal commands given by the officers to stop . And the lieutenant says he does not know at this point. Of course, both of those officers are going to be interviewed, you know, by the command staff to figure out exactly what happened in this officerinvolved shooting. All right. Janine de la vega live there in san jose on that breaking news. Thank you. Busy street in San Francisco could be shut down for several days because of a sinkhole. Repair crews began working on the hole early this morning there on mission street. A 140yearold sewer main ruptured last night and caused the pavement to give way. The hole is 12 feet wide, 5 feet wide. A suv had stopped for a red light when the ground opened up. The vehicle, which carried a family of five plus a driver, teetered precariously on the edge. Hole. This is one of the oldest ones, but we do have a lot of aging sewer mains. We have accelerated our pipeline repair and replacement program. We are doing 15 miles each year of sewer main replacement. There is no disruption to water or Sewer Service in that area. Munis 14 bus line is rerouted because of the closure. New energies about a new information about a carjacking. East bay authorities are looking into weather three suspects were targeting a man returning from a casino. Our cameras recorded police arresting a suspect and finding a large wad of cash on him. Investigators say the suspects robbed a victim at gunpoint and stole his car in dublin. A police chase ended in a crash in east oakland. Speeds topped 100 miles an hour. According to the mercury news, the city Council Voted 101 yesterday to approve a final repeal of the measure. It was aimed at slowing pension costs for city union employees, and it was blamed by many San Jose Police and firefighters as the reason they moved to other cities that offered better benefits. Well, the university of california regents plan to talk about Sexual Harassment and violence on campus today behind closed doors. That is being criticized. The mercury news says students and other critics are upset that the board will talk about this issue in secret, and they claim they are trying to avoid more embarrassment after several reports of sex harassment involving faculty and other employees on the uc berkeley campus. The University Says meetings to talk about Personnel Matters or possible lawsuits, they are exempt from opendoor meeting laws. The social media site nextdoor. Com says its changing its policy to prevent racial profiling among neighborhoods. The San Franciscobased company is a sort of online neighborhood bulletin board. People who live in the same area can post recommendations about restaurants or babysitters and alert each other about breakins. According to the San Francisco chronicle, a group called neighbors for Racial Justice complain many people were posting suspicions about strangers who were usually people of color. The Campaign Office got word late monday that sanders might come and it was confirmed only just a few hours before his arrive. Sanders said he would be back to california many times between now and the state primary on june 7. As expected, Bernie Sanders won the West Virginia primary yesterday. He easily beat hillary clinton, whose positions on some Environmental Issues arent very popular in the coal mining state. Hillary clinton already looking ahead to next tuesdays president ial primaries in oregon and kentucky. She told a crowd in louisville that the stakes this Election Year are very high. You could not imagine a more different vision for our country than the one between our side of democrats for progress, for prosperity, for fairness and opportunity than the presumptive nominee on the republican side and [booing]. Clinton called for a big turnout next week in kentucky so she can go on to the general election and win in november. Clinton is courting the womens vote and focusing on family issues. On the republican side, donald trump easily won the West Virginia primary with 76 of the vote. Ted cruz, john kasich were still on the ballot even though they dropped out of the race. Both received less than 10 of the vote. Trump also won the Nebraska Republican primary. His victory margin was smaller there, but it was another clear victory. An amendment will be on the November Ballot in San Francisco that would lower the voting age to 16 in municipal elections. Yesterday city supervisors voted 92 to put it on the ballot. If it passes, San Francisco would be the first major u. S. City. The loss of the day planner was a lifechanging moment for one woman here in the bay area. She was preparing to write her usual routine down when she realized it was time for a change. I have to ask you, losing the day planner works that your throwing the cards up in the air and see where they land moment . Had you not lost it, would you have not taken off in this other direction . I think it was a turning point. At that point i had begun my second act. What happened when you lost it . Were you stressed out . Very stressed and, you know, panic the. I had been staying at home with my children and had a very busy life. It was busy and scheduled and full. There was a bit of emptiness. It was my emptiness. I love my children. So when that planner disappeared, what were the pta meetings and carpools . I went to the store and got another planner and it was blank. Blank. Which was nice . Yeah. Blank slate. Nice and scary a little . Do i refill it or do i rewrite it . I get the feeling that you are trying to i know trying to encourage other people not to be locked in. We get locked in at 40. We have a long way to go, right . Absolutely. Hopefully, we will be looking at many decades ahead. So when i ran to the bookstore to get senator get another planner and saw beautiful blank pages i thought, i think ill rewrite this. I grabbed the new planner and i grabbed a new book on learning to fly. Why learning to fly . Was that a random moment or tucked in your head . That goes way back for me. Symbolic . No. It was the real love, you know. Ever since i was a child, i liked air and space and flight and airplanes. And i put it off for a variety of reasons. So when i wrote finding the wow, it is about how i followed my childhood dreams at 45 and overcame my fears and learned to fly. How long did it take from the point you lost the day planner to you having your pilot license . Well, you know, i was a part time student. I had children at home. I dropped them off at school and i would go to flight school. And it was very out of the box, as you said. I had to i walked into the classroom and everybody was half my age and they were guys and very tom cruiseish. We cool looking. I looked like the house mother that crashed the fraternity party. That began my journey. Was there any point during that journey you scratched your head or looked at yourself in the mirror and said, m. J. , what are you doing . Lets go back to filling out the day planner like it should be filled out . Lets go back to whats confident and comfortable and, you know, stressfree in a sense. I had a number of moments like that. I had some very scary things to have to overcome. Physical fears and emotional fears. What kind of mom goes to flight school, you know . Lets talk about that. Your children are young adults now. What do they think of mom . They are in their own areas of technology and science, and we all have different passions. They eventually saw that this was not sort of a a lark . A lark, yeah. A flight of fancy, if you will. But it took a lot of work. M. J. , you are training for space . Tell me about this project. Well, i did finally get that license. You asked how long did it take . A year and a half to it, i got one license. Then i got four more. Now i am a flight instructors. But it opened the doors to space. Meeting my next dream. And my start was with being a Mission Support rep for a space for virgin galactic. They had to send me to training. This is the video were looking at . The video were looking at is i am inside the simulate their is a stateoftheart worldclass simulator. I am learning what it feels  like to leave the earth and return to get out of earths grip. For a moment have you ever regretted your decision . Oh, no, i have never looked back. Okay. Thats a decent meal. Thats for using the ktvuthe9. Californias drought had a devastating affect. After the wet winter we had, we are hearing a different story. Steve paulson takes us to where the salmon are thriving. Time for this mornings segment 2. Reporter fall, winter and spring salmon runs were looked upon as an endless commodities. By the 1800s, all but exhausted. The building of dams, mining, destruction of an attacked a woman contributed to the salmons decline. In marin county exhaustive work has being going on by many agencies to protect the coho salmon and increase their numbers. Four years of drought didnt help. This years rain has definitely made a difference. Beneficial for a few reasons. During the winter when the adult salmon come in to spawn, there was water in the creek to come and spawn and also related to that is the fish were able to go far up into the watershed into the smaller tributaries where they prefer to go so that when there is a later storm, their eggs are protected. Reporter this years coho salmon run was the largest in ten years. 550 coho reds gravel nests were observed. While the focus remains on primarily the creek, its the other smaller creeks and tributaries that feed it which are just as important. The tributaries support almost 40 of all the spawning that happens in the entire watershed, and 30 of all the smoltz originate from saint geronimo. Reporter marin county relies on water supply on rainfall. 75 from rain and 25 from the russian river. That makes the salmon run in west marin so unique is a large number of the fish are wild and not raise inside hatcheries. Water in the creeks is critical because the life of a coho salmon only lasts three years. We are along san geronimo creek. In front of a smoltz trap. These are baby coho a year ago. They swim in. They bring them back. They clip their fins a bit. They weigh them. They measure them. They release them upstream. Eventually they head out into the ocean. They start off about that big and come back about 15 pounds a year later. Seeing the salmon run can make a lasting impression on old and young alike. Since he has been a freshman in high school, ryan horn has done volunteer work to learn what it takes to get keep the salmon run going. When i was a kid my grandfather took me to the areas to see the salmon and steelhead run and i loved it. So i came back because i wanted to save them. I want my children to have the same experience that i had. Reporter a goal of 1,300 nests or 2600 fish for many years would equal a full recovery along log neatis creek. The run up 33 miles is a tough swim when there is water. Loganites is a model. Are we 20 miles from San Francisco and we have one of the best populations of coho salmon in the state of california. That says something about the creek right there if you ask me. Beautiful. Thats a lot of agencies working together. Spawn, which is one, and marin county water works. Thats what it takes. Yes. And it takes even the board of supervisors to try to save that. Believe me, a lot of dams are being taken down north and carmel river valley. Thats also a step in the right direction. So its happening. I think 1 is left. So if we wanted to take our little ones to go and see the salmon, best time, best place . The coho would be december january. But there is the chinook and salmon. East bay mud is relaxing drought requirements now that reservoirs are filling and customers continue to conserve. The water agency has declared the drought emergency over. It says it will end a monthly 25 surcharge on july 1st. That amounted to about 8 a month for the average household. The agency says restrictions on water use wills be lifted in july. East bay mud Officials Say they dont expect their customers will suddenly start wasting water. East bay mud is very confident that our customers can continue to save water without the need for these drought restrictions that are in place for this emergency. Water agency Officials Say conservation habits are part of daily life, and if customers installed watersaving devices or drought resistant landscaping, they will continue to help. Four students started a Hunger Strike ten days ago. The meeting started an hour and a half ago. The students are protesting a proposal to cut the studies of the ethnic department. They have demands which includes doubling the budget of that department. Earlier the president chose not to meet with students but offered to discuss the students issues after a student was taken to the hospital monday night. The Hunger Strikers say they felt support from other students and faculty there on campus. I feel like i can go for another two weeks. I am afraiding, yeah. The more people that come out every day, the less hungry i feel. The support should come from around the campus because everyone should take at least one ethnic studies class. So many people are loving it and its not even their major. The University President says he willing to discuss what the students want if they stop the Hunger Strike. They have a list of ten demands, one of which is doubling the budget. More controversy in North Carolina about bathrooms and the transgender community. One School District says it will now allow High School Students to carry pepper spray starting in the fall. One member of the local board of education says it may be useful for students who encounter transgender classmates in the bathroom. The board member says using the spray would be purely defensive saying the pepper spray could help female students if they go to the bathroom and dont know who is coming in after them. A little boy who wanted to help Cancer Patients is now fighting cancer himself. When he was five years old he started growing out his hair so he could donate his hair to help children with cancer. His parents say it was his idea. Then he said he wanted to help people though even though he was teased about being a boy with long hair. During that time mistaken for a girl many times. He took it like a champ. He was like, no, i am a boy. Everyone got excited when i cut the ponytail off. Were you happy . Were you sad . I was happy. He is trying to maintain that positive outlook even after doctors diagnosed him with an aggressive stage 4 cancer. There are growths in his hip and in the bone around his eye and behind his nose. He says his eye is what he calls kind of squinty and he knows the cancer is spreading through his blood. He knows he is fight this battle with the help of his family. Ktvus Tara Moriarty is live outside the San Francisco bureau at the hall of justice. Another protest tied to sfpd this morning . Reporter thats right. Quite a few protests over the next couple of weeks. This will be on the front steps of the hall of justice in an hour and a half. As you may recall, friday we had a protest at city hall. That got rowdy. We had some 30 some odd arrests and that included groups from the justice for alex coalition, alex nieto, as well as mario woods as well as the first five supporters. They have been asking the mayor to fire chief greg suhr in the wake of a handful of deadly Police Shootings. They want sweeping reforms to change the departments use of force policies. Friday, obviously, got a little bit crazy. Here this should be a little bit different tone am well known civil rights Attorney John Burris will be spearheading the event. The mayor has made some promise, 17. 5 million that he plans to dedicate to reform of the San Francisco Police Department as well as trying to reduce the number of officer involved shootings. Now, 11 million of that money is going to be going towards violence prevention programs over the next two years. There is also funding for 100 tasers that would have to be approved by the police commission. Other equipment would include defensive shields and 35 net guns, which throw a net around a suspect to subdue him. The mayor says that he hopes to gut the number of officer involved shootings in the city by 80 . At the heart of it, too, part of it is to make sure that we have got the resources to implement this in a serious way and that we have appropriate oversight in making sure its transparent, that its an honest approach. Its kind of disheartening, you know, that hes reactive and he thinks that this is going to placate us. The only thing thats going to make us happy is if he listens to the community. We dont want tasers. We want the chief of police to go. Reporter so again this latest protest is going to be happening here at the hall of justice. Again john burris will be on hand. I come into work every day at 3 30 a. M. , and it hurts. He has the best attitude. So many people ask, wow, you know, for those of you who work overnight or super early in the morning, how do you do it . Is it horrible . We even like or love the schedule we are on. So many people have young families of their own, other obligations or interests during the day. So the overnight shift really tends to work for us. We very, very lucky. Yeah. And you get off earlier, too. Absolutely. So thank you. It does hurt sometimes. On top of that, there is a new episode of empire, which airs tonight at nine on ktvu. How long did it take to perfect the role to where you wanted it to be . You know, its ongoing, hob honest with you. Especially now because she is going to come back different in a way. But improved. I mean, if you thought she was evil before, she is the 2. 0 version of who she was first season. But she is always its always with fish mooney changing. So the first season to perfect her, it took maybe four to five episodes to really get her locked in, and now, you know, shes come back a little different. So ill see how long that takes. You took your eye out with a spoon, and that was on one of these episodes when you were like it was really creepy. Do you enjoy playing these characters maybe more than you would someone who is, you know, very nice . This character must be a lot of fun to play, right . She is a lot of fun to play. You know, with fish i get to play a lot of things. I get to be funny. I get to be dramatic. You know, i get some action. I get some glamor. I get to be a little sexy and seductive. I mean, she really kind of encompasses everything that makes a character fun to play. And so she is one of my favorites. So when i was asked to come back, it was, how could i say no . I missed her and i love her to death. Were you surprised . Usually when someone is written off, they dont come back . Yeah, i thought that was it. When i went over, you know, i thought, okay, well, she served her purpose because it was you know, she was written for the Television Show to basically be a problem for penguin, to be penguins nemesis. Once he took over gotham, okay, thats the villain he took out and now she is done and over with. I got a call from bruno, the creator of the show, and he said we found a way to bring you back. I was surprised and happy, you know, to return. Jada, before we let you go i couldnt say no. I am glad you didnt. Like i said earlier, a great character. We had mothers day. As a working mom, how is that going at this point in your life . Well, you know, my kids are teenagers and my daughter is 15. And its, you know, they dont want to travel with you. So, you know, i am kind of restricted a little bit nowadays. But its okay. Jayden is going to be 18 in july. And ive got about two more years, two, three more years with willow. Just like that.
