My toaster oven is in the mail. He was a joy to hang out with. Thats interesting. I like that. I had a similar experience yesterday. I had to get blood work. Went into the office. Ten people in line. No one came up and said it was going to be while so i got up and went to another office. I stuck with bed bath and beyond. I like it when people come up and say im sorry. I hold my tongue. You never know, they could say thats sal castaneda. He is a jerk. He was trying so hard and he was genuine. He really diffused what was anger in me at first. Customer service. Customer service. Civility. Did anybody say youre gasia mikaelian. No. I looked pretty rough. I appreciate the fact that he went above and beyond to do his job and with a smile. It is this tone of civility and doing what is right. He could have pushed me aside and called the next person in line. These are subtle themes that were going to talk about tomorrow. John kasich is joining us. We will talk president ial politics and his aspirations. He is talking about civility and coming together and he will join us tomorrow on the 9. That will be a good interview. Lets follow up on breaking news. New this morning, facebook now says it is hiring 3,000 more people to review videos in an attempt to keep suicides subpoena murders from being posted or live streamed on facebook. This comes in addition to the 4500 people facebook already has doing that job. Facebook as you know has been strongly criticized recently for not doing enough to prevent those types of videos from spreading. Videos that depict violence are against the rules. But users have to report them to the company to be removed. Joining us right now is peter. Peter, real quick your reaction to Mark Zuckerbergs announcement this morning. I think it is a brilliant move. I think that the Public Relations point of view will help facebook. For the general public that uses facebook, it will be at least one step forward in reassuring people that the kinds of things that we have been seeing or that have been possible to see are eliminated. Do you think 3,000 people, whew i will it sounds like a lot for the massive volume that facebook gets, is that enough people to really make a difference and some of the troubling things that we have seen on the site. There are two parts to it. The total will be closer to 8,000 when they finish the hiring process this time. The second part is going to be that this into ades to be a 24 7 this needs to be a 24 7 operation since facebook is around the world. This will be their challenge on how to divide the 8,000 people to monitor 24 hours a day around the world. And so to answer your question, i think that they probably need to take it closer to 11,000 or 12,000. Ive been doing math. And about 12,000 monitors will i think address fairly sufficiently around the world. So theyre going to be a little short but it will be a great a great sigh of relief for many, especially parents, who are using facebook or knowing their children are using facebook. Yeah. Speaking of, Mark Zuckerberg said in a couple of years, he expects to have Artificial Intelligence that will help find these troubling videos instead of essentially relying on human eyes. Part of the issue and that is one of the issues that i work in, is Artificial Intelligence. It is this idea that the Computing Power is just not there to apply it to the kind of systems that were talking about. Translating, were going to still need humans to make some snap judgments i think for quite some time. But Artificial Intelligence is going to help in the process over the next five years. I would argue that its going to be longer than what mr. Zuckerberg is talking about. Can you explain how Artificial Intelligence would work in a case such as this . Are they working for key words . Certain images on the screen . How does it work . We know there are technologies called face recognition. One of the things that i can smile or i can be sad and, you know, smile and eyes and so forth. These kinds of actions and interactions are picked up theirs and pattern recognitions are thrown into place. So there are mathematical formulas that say if you frown for more than 30 seconds there could be something up. Im making this up at the moment. There is also tonal audio alerts that Artificial Intelligence can detect. As well as the types of words and the frequency of words that you use. The words that you use in a particular video or audio message. So there are a number of components that come in. In the end, there will be a red flag that someone else needs to make a decision on. Thank you, peter. Thank you very much. We will head south now where happening now a few dozen students at uc santa cruz are occupying a School Building in support for african, black and caribbean students. They have taking over kerr hall. The prosecutors Closing Arguments in the garciatorres trial are getting underway right now. He is accused of kidnapping and killing 15yearold sierra lamar in 2012. Alex savidge is at the Santa Clara County courthouse to explain how the two sides, alex, are making their cases to the jury. Reporter yeah. Good morning to all of you. This trial just resumed a short time ago. We watched as people filed into the courtroom here in san jose. What will be a packed courtroom for this highly watched trial here. Now, the prosecution will continue first with its Closing Argument. Theyre trying to overcome the major hurdle in this case as they try to get a conviction. Thats the fact that sierra lamars body was never found. They say it is clear she was murdered and the defendant is the man responsible for killing her. Garciatorres accused of kidnapping and killing the 15 yearold girl who disappeared back in 2012. Sparking major searches here in the south bay. During Closing Arguments yesterday, the Deputy District Attorney told jurors that the only trace of the morgan hill teenager that was ever found was inside the defendants car. Prosecutors also showed the jury photos of sierra lamars clothing and they say the clothing was covered with dirt, which indicates the teen was either on the ground or dragged. Now, after the prosecution wraps up its Closing Argument, which could happen today, the defense will take its turn. The defense is going to have to be very strong, very emotional in the way that they start their Closing Argument and say dont believe everything that youve heard. Wait until you hear what we have to say about this case. What the the District Attorney knows that if they dont prove beyond a reasonable doubt that sierra lamar is dead, the case is over. Reporter now, the defense in this case has offered up a theory during this 13weeklong trial that its possible that sierra lamar was never kidnapped, was never killed, and may in fact have simply run away. Thats an idea that prosecutors call absurd. Now garciatorres never did take the stand during this trial. But if he is convicted on the murder charge, he potentially is looking at the Death Penalty in this case. Again, once the prosecution wraps up their Closing Argument, which should happen later on today, the defense will get its turn for a Closing Argument. After that, the prosecution has a chance for a rebuttal. And then finally after a lengthy trial here, this case will be handed over to the jury. They will make their decision. Thank you, alex. Then a tworun homer in the 4th. Then in the 7th, dozier notches his second home run of the game. The twins won it big. The as and twins face off again this evening. Then the giants got pounded by the dodgers. Matt moore hit a line drive in the 2nd inning scoring two and the giants led 20. But the dodgers bounced right back and took a 54 lead. And the dodgers loaded the bases. And then a tworun single and the dodgers smothered the giants. They go at it again tonight. This is game one, western conference semifinals. Curry does his magic and scores. The warriors are up 10 in the playoff series against the jazz playing their first game in more than a week. The warriors did not look rusty at all. They jumped out to a 90 lead and never looked back. They shared the ball well. 32 assists and just 7 turnovers. It usually takes a while to get that rhythm and youre usually sloppy. That says a lot about the veteran group to stay locked in and keep the turnovers low. If we can do that, we have a great chance of winning. Last night was the first time in nba playoff history where one team, the warriors, had five players with at least five assists each while the other team didnt have a Single Player reach five assists. Incredible. The next game is tomorrow night at oracle at 7 30. What made a huge difference was just greens defense. Phenomenal defense. Tom has more on who will actually be footing the bill this time around. Reporter last thursdays Law Enforcement activities at uc berkeley during the ann coulter protest and counter protest ran up half a Million Dollars in overtime for university police, Berkeley Police, the Alameda County Sheriffs Office and a host of other agencies. University and Berkeley Police simply had to have assistance. In resent months, berkeley has become this hot bed of protests and political activity around free speech. That is overwhelming the resources of both of those departments. Reporter there was a large presence of Law Enforcement and there was no violence. But the county Sheriffs Office ran up 80,000 helping out, money it now wants back. We entered into a memorandum of understanding, a contract, with the university that they would reimburse us the cost of the 80 officers to go out to berkeley that day. Reporter while the university is in Alameda County, this is a planned event that the undertook. Pew tall aid is provided as a normal cost with no expectation of reimbursement. The problem is every day there is a planned protest on campus, the sheriffs deputies are requested, it runs up a similar tab. And its not like anybody is profiting off of doing this. They are probably actually costing some departments like ours money in resources and time and effort and logistics and all of the energy that goes into it. Reporter the University Says the cost of protection is justified giving its role to not only protect and educate students, staff and visitors as well as provide a forum for free speech. It is a unique opportunity. Im going to bring in anthony lee. How unusual is it to have this handson experience in an actual house. It is very rare. Usually we dont get an opportunity to see the fire behavior and unique fire conditions and smoke conditions on the inside. We just put it out. With this training burn, it gives the recruits to see the stages of fire and smoke conditions. With our lead instructor, he is able to dictate and narrate all of the conditions and what is transpiring inside of the structure. Lets go inside. Chip our photographer is heading in. This is an actual house. I mean, it was donated to you by a church. Yes. In vallejo, specifically for the firefighters to learn from. Friendship Ministry Church donated the structure to us. We came in and were able to do modifications to it. It was stripped to the studs but we built it up to hold and contain the fire so we could do multiple burns without doing much damage to the structure. You see the fuel load. Yeah. 28year veteran captain will lead the new recruits through fire behavior and the different stages of fire as it goes through. As you can see, we built a burn pile here. He will narrate as he applies water. The stages of fire. The different types of fuel components. And everything that goes along with it. The smoke conditions, inversion layers. What are the things that the recruits can learn here in this kind of exercise that you really cant learn in a classroom or learn anywhere else. It is unique. If you can take a look at this kind of drawing that we that we did right here. It shows the different stages of fire and its growth. And when we arrive and when we could facilitate a change. And when its not attainable to facilitate a rescue or be able to extinguish the fire. It illustrates to the new recruits as he shows them here and demonstrates with the fire what they can do. How did you get permission to do this . Because its spare the air day. Yeah. This is a residential neighborhood. So taking time to plan this burn took four to five months. We had to go to public agencies and our own agency to make sure that it is all okay. A long time coming. A long time planning. Yes. We needed approval from all of the resident as to. Thank you so much, anthony lee talking about the Training Exercise that will start here in about half an hour or so. We will be out here to watch it, observe it. Next, the elements being incorporated into what is a very special show. This month the San Francisco base ballet is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the summer of love with a very special show. Ktvu has a look at the historic time that went into the depths. [music] reporter the 23yearold San Francisco based billion a was created to build an American Ballet Company with the distinctly american accent. This month, the ballet will present here and now, a ballet based on San Franciscos 1967 summer of love, a summer that impacted cultures worldwide to this very day. As far as the summer of love, it seemed a perfect fit for the ballet. Reporter artistic director of the ballet says this ballet is a major theatric cal work partially based on a drug trip including clothes of the time, big sets and projections from many bay area artists including jefferson airplane, sly and the family stone and the mamas and the papas. These were turbulent times. Some of the same issues still exist. Our issues of love and existence and peace, not war. Many of the issues are still with us today. So its going to be very timely. Even though it is a celebration of this era of 50 years ago. It was above all things this time of openness and experimentation and exploration. This is a soundtrack of our lives. There are so many for me there are so many moments of recall, i remember what i was hearing when that event happened. Reporter the audience will float through the key issues of a vibrant era, 50 years ago, including vietnam, drugs, free love and spiritual openings through music and dance. You can be high minded and think it has to be classical music. For me some of the most brilliant Musical Artists are pop artists, in particular artists from this time period. [music] we are happy to welcome artistic director to talk to us about this amazing creation. Ill say first of all a lot of people dont expect those songs to be put to ballet. Thats true. Although it is classic ballet. We have created ballets to any type of music. Our founder didnt shia way from sinatra. Plus he loved classical music. It runs the gamut with what we do. Was it difficult to come to this point, putting it all together when youre talking about something in 1967, bringing it to the stage in 2017. Yes and no. The project has had a long process. I talked to mcintyre two years ago talking about the project, knowing that the summer of love was upon us in a couple of years. It seemed the perfect fit. If michael was here, he would be creating to it for sure. Do you feel a certain responsibility to, quote, get did right . This is San Francisco. It happened here. People are going to come here with High Expectations to see your show. Well, its true. We arent just trying to copy what happened in the summer of love. And its really mcintyres reflection on it as well. Although we are celebrating 50 years ago, the issues are still present today. He is talking about love and acceptance. Peace, not war. So these things are still relevant today. Sadly that we still have to remind people and for people to be in touch with their own humanity.
