Knocked in a run in the sixrun second inning against lance lynn. Lynn on the hook for the loss today. His record would slip to 86. And greinke would join Adam Wainwright and Alfredo Simon atop the National League leader board with ten wins. Eric well, this dodger ball club, you know, one of the reasons they have played so well as of late, and made up a number of games in the standings, theyre been playing great defense. This will be their ninth straight errorless ball game. Thats something that has been markedly different from the way they started the year. I mean, they were just they were really struggling on defense. Thom brokenbat roller, theres one, and thats a double play to end the inning. Dodgers get a pair. On our way to the ninth. L. A. Three outs away from a game three win. [ male announcer ] take home one of these charbroil gas grills for just 249 at lowes. Zack greinke the main man today. Eric just absolutely dominant. You saw the way that the cardinals were swinging. Pitches out of the zone, swinging through the ball, you really couldnt ask for a better Performance Today than what zakh greinke gave the dodgers. I got to keep talking while hes throwing strikeouts here. Ridiculous ten of those. Thom so a 91 lead for Don Mattinglys team. Todays broadcast produced by brad sager, gilbert zapada, montal bany, zach jensen, and stats up in the booth provided by Aaron Charlton and we thank our entire fox sports crew from here in los angeles. We these two teams getting together again come october. The final two standing in the National League for the League Championship series a year ago. Where the cardinals advanced on to the lcs for what was a third consecutive year. Chris perez, the onetime closer of the cleveland indians, and of course originally, a st. Louis cardinal, takes over on the mound. Eric yes, dodgers have a number of guys that have been closers in their career in that bull pen that arent in that closer role now. Chris perez, brandon lee, brian wilson. Theres no lack of experience down there. Thom but thats the one area, and their general manager ned colletti addressed it yesterday with the local media. And really pulled no punches. Said, look, we have some guys down there, that if they got back to where they were, that maybe we dont have to do anything. But some have suggested, if theres a question mark or a, you know, a weak spot on this dodger team, it would be the consistency that you look for, that if you have a lead in the sixth, or the seventh inning, you have that shutdown bull pen. Eric and i think theyve got the guys to do it. While ned colletti is always going to look to improve this ball club, hes also in a situation where, you know what, i think ive got the horses down there, but maybe they need to feel like theres a little urgency. Because those guys have all performed well at certain times during the season. And if they can get back to where theyve been historically, then this is a shutdown bull pen. Thom extraordinary moments happen every night in Major League Baseball. But of course on one night theyre all together in one place. You can check it out, the 85th Major League Baseball allstar game, tuesday, july 15th, 7 30 eastern time, 4 30 pacific right here on fox. Leadoff man aboard on a walk, now matt adams. Fastball in there, strike. Of course perez ran into problems on the field, then he had a few choice words for some of the indians fans, or lack thereof. As they werent drawing very well despite a very good start. Wound up being a playoff year for the indians last year, and then had an offthefield situation that sealed the deal and that was all for him in cleveland. Eric again, a lot of success there for many years. Just didnt work out last year. As you mentioned, a lot of things going on. There was a time too at the end of the year, where he was thrust back in that closers role, and had a bat outing and then i remember after the game strikes out matt adams here he poked his head in frank konas office and said you need to put someone else in to close. For me, if im a manager, or in the front office, the minute thats said, thats when ive got to look elsewhere, when the player loses confidence in himself enough so to go to the manager, you know, just not going to work out anymore in cleveland. Got a new start here in l. A. And again, hes had spurts where hes done well. Just needs more consistency. And again, youre not teaching 95 miles an hour with movement. Thom runner takes off. Craig swings and fouls it out of play. A ball and a strike. Giants and the reds under way, cincinnati batting in the top of the inning. Alfredo simon, matt cain the matchup in that one. You can rest assured both of these teams will be keeping an eye on that game. Most of the action around Major League Baseball is complete. These dodgers, two games behind the giants going into play today. And the reds are only two games behind the cardinals for second place in the Central Division going into play today. Eric but again, a lot of parity, a lot of teams bunched together in still all these divisions, wide open. Its ironic when we talk about Major League Baseball as a whole. A week and a half ago, the big story, especially when youre talking midwest, the kansas city royals, right . And theyre back. Theyve overtaken the tigers. And oh, this, and that. When you look, the biggest difference in the loss column of any division, is five games. Thats detroit ahead of kansas city. Then youve got milwaukee ahead of st. Louis. Five games, thats the biggest difference in all of baseball. I mean, this thing is so wide open. Looks for a great second half. This is the stuff you obviously dont want to see. You know, youd like chris perez to come in and just boom boom boom and throw strikes but theres something to be said about coming in, its a 91 ball game. Its tough to create that adrenaline. Its tough to create that urgency. Thom but you know, the one guy that was able to do that this year, and you got to give it up to him, brandon lee. Lost his job last year as a closer. They paid him a lot of money to come over from toronto and be their guy. And then it went from bad to worse, pretty much right from the beginning of the year. When this year began, he was pitching in games just like perez is pitching in right now, all mopup duty. Never complained. Never said a word. Went out, did ihis job, and jus mowed people down. When you do those things in those kind of games, Don Mattingly said, next time its a fourrun game, next time its a threerun game, next time its a and now hes a setup man along with wilson depending on the day. Eric youre right. The only way youre going to get yourself back into a situation where you pitch in meaningful games, youre going to have to come in and accept your role here and do the job. But again, all im saying, its not as easy as just coming out there and throwing it right down the middle. And the crowd facetiously cheers the strike. 22. So next saturday youll be down in your old hometown of san diego. Eric youre going to be down there this week. The reds head down there. Thom on my way down there tonight. Eric on your way down there tonight. Well, enjoy it. Get it ready for me. Thom that one popped up on the right side, and that will be the second out of the ninth inning. I did not know until you mentioned it sort of in passing today when we were talking about, you know, hitting a home run. I did not realize in all the games weve worked together, that your first career home run came in your hometown. Eric san diego. Thom that is pretty cool. That must have been really cool. Eric it was. And the ironic story behind that, is craig lep ertz was pitching. Tommy called me back to the dugout and talked about how he has better stuff than that guy out there on the mound and ive been hitting off him in spring training. Got a fastball here, wild pitch. But then, oh, you know what, hes going to throw you the inside fastball, just turn on it. Im a young guy, im listening to tommy, but im nervous, its my first start at home, and all be darned if he didnt throw a fastball in, and if he didnt have worse stuff than tommy, and that first pitch, i got a hold of one. So yeah, that was good memories of san diego. Thom so the old fella knew a thing or two. Eric thats why hes in the hall of fame. Thom thats right. Well, i was so disappointed when i was here earlier this year for a threegame series, i did not get a chance to see tommy. Because there are people that can say this and that and all the ra ra, all that kind of thing, but where he is in his life now and for those of us that have been fortunate enough to be around him oh, my, that had to hurt. Peralta, looked like it got him on the left arm. Maybe on the elbow. Lets take a look. Eric this is a situation too again where, are you putting peralta up there to just get an atbat to get ready for tomorrow. Yeah, sure, but that is right there, right below the elbow. That thing is gonna just bruise up and be tight as heck tomorrow. This is when youre going, mike, i appreciate that atbat you got me. Just next time, lets skip it. Unless we got a softthrowing lefthander out there. Yeah, thats not going to feel thats going to be tight. Thats going to feel fresh tomorrow. That just thats just not good. Thom so now theyre loaded for mark ellis. Eric look at that thing. Its already starting to swell. Thom wow. Eric thats when the bench coach starts looking for somebody on the bench to go hit. Thats when you make sure youre in the bathroom or the food room. Thanks but no thanks, ill catch you tomorrow. Thom well, he was the last man left on their bench. He had was the only player that had not been used. Because of all the changes they made after falling behind. They brought in bourjos, robinson, and cruz. 12 the count on ellis. Eric just hope that hes okay to play tomorrow against kershaw. Thom you can look at getting the day off today. That was with tomorrow in mind. 22 the count on ellis. So perez has walked two, hes hit a batter. Here with a 91 lead in the ninth inning. Eric done all that and still has a chance to pitch a scoreless night. Thom 32 now on ellis. On the ground to short and this ought to do it. And that is that. A 91 win for the dodgers. Theyve taken two of the first three with one more to go in this fourgame weekend set.
