This was supposed to be a childhood pastimes, a sleepover. Her grandfather said she was so excited to go. I said do you need me to walk you to the door . Youre not to big for that . She said no. Oakland Police Continue to investigate the disappearance of a toddler a day after family and friends held an emotional vigil for her. Protesters are already gathered here in front of the ucsf mission bay campus. The group made up of uc students and employees are not happy with Janet Napolitano as the new uc president. Im an undocumented student and Janet Napolitano has been no friend of immigrants. I think its unfair that my university which im very proud to be of would be considering somebody who is considered to be very antiimmigrant. Reporter the nomination of napolitano came to a surprise as many. She was chosen after a special Regents Committee selected her out of a reported field of nearly 300 candidates. Her appointment has garnered national attention. Shes expected toen confirmed easily to be confirmed easily. Many have been wondering if she has enough experience to do the job. Gavin newsom is in favor of the appointment saying the,needs a lead the saying the system needs a leader like napolitano. Economically, we cant continue to do what weve done in the last decade. Something radical has to change and i think it requires someone with a fresh perspective, a different set of eyes with leadership skills and qualities that can move the system to the 21st century. Napolitano graduated from Santa Clara University and was its first female valedictorian. Shes a former governor of arizona and is only the third person to lead the tenyearold department of Homeland Security. We caught up with one of napolitano former sors who taught her in the 1970s. What doesnt come from the resume is how much she cares about undergraduate education and it seems to me that the challenge in the uc system is to bring together the undergraduate education part with the research part. Acdameia runs in her family. The uc regents also faced confrontation of a student region yesterday. Some jewish groups came out against the 21yearold student, the first Muslim Student regent. Critics say her calls for the university to divest from companies with ties to the Israeli Military make her unfit to represent all uc students. She says her priorities are to work on Financial Aid system reform and on making the campus a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Penn State University has reached about 60 million in settlements with men who say they were victims of sexual abuse. The men say former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky abused them. The dollar comes from ted brown. Brown says he does not know how many claims have been settled. He says some are still in negotiation. Sandusky is serving a prison term after being convicted last year on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. 6,000 people remain evacuated because of a wildfire in riverside county. Its been named the mountain fire. Its burning in the area around highway 243 and highway 74 near mountain center. The fire started monday afternoon. Its consumed nearly 23,000 acres and destroyed six homes. Firefighters say its 15 contained. The evacuations have included some areas on the western side of palm springs. Texas governor rick perry signed a law that imposes sweeping new restrictions on boorbs abortion in that state. The law prohibits abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy. Only five abortion clinics out of 42 in the state meet that criteria. The law takes effect in october. President obama is defending his signature Affordable Care act as republicans and the house of representatives attempt to block key components of the law. The president spoke about obama care. This comes two weeks after announced it was delaying a key provision of the law for one year, the requirement that company extend Health Insurance to their fulltime workers. The president says many are getting rebates and several states are set up for lower premiums. A redwood city couple who escaped a devastating Apartment Fire is suing the buildings owner. The lawsuit claims the owner of the hallmark house of apartments failed to properly inspect and maintain the building. It also claims the building did not have enough smoke detectors and a Sprinkler System should have been installed. One person died and 97 people were left without a place to live in last sundays fire. 20 people including three firefighters were hurt. A santa cruz woman wants the sit to compensate her for repairs she had to make after a Police Shootout in february. The woman owns a fiveunit apartment complex. It was the scene where officers confronted and killed jeremy goulet. Hes the man accused of gunning down two Santa Cruz Police officers. The owner said she had to pay 5,000 to fix bullet holes in garages, fences and doors. But the city refused her claim for reimbursement. Ive never seen so many police and military people in my life. I think the owner is not unreasonable to ask for compensation personally. The owner says the mayor visited her yesterday and told her that her claim will be put on the City Council Agenda for reconsideration later this month. We just got an update from pg e. Crews have restored power to almost all of the homes and businesses that lost electricity in San Francisco earlier today near the embarcadero. The power went out about 6 45 this morning in the area of spear and harrison streets. The outage affected 64 commercial and residential customers. Power lines were seen tangled up along spear street. Pg e says crews are still doing repairs and trying to find out what knocked out the power. Right now everyone has their power on except for one customer. East bay vector announced two new occurrences of west nile virus. The virus was confirm in a crow and a group of mosquitoes. A contra costa mosquito and Vector Control spokesperson said mosquitoes mature more quickly in hot water and unkg people to drain any urge people to drain any water on their property. Drakes Bay Oyster Company in point reyes will be allowed to stay open, for now. A judge ruled the business can continue to operate while the federal permit is under review. In california of this year, the California Coastal commission issued a cease and desist order and restoration order against drakes bay. The orders accused of business of harming the environment. More and more people are riding ac buses. The Transit District said figures show a 6 increase in ridership over the last 12 months. Thats about 10,000 people a day. An ac transit spokesperson credits more Dependable Service and better buses for the upswing. Others say it may have to do with the economy.
