Tonight on a second look oscar winners who have passed away in the last year. Stance won two oscars. Reporter the flat lands of berkeley would seem an unlikely headquarters for one of the most respected men in movies. His company is called fantasy. But his impact on hollywood is real. Its real but almost numb with the idea. Reporter numb because tomorrow night the 76yearold grandfather could win two oscars including the most prized statute of all. The oscar for best picture, the English Patient. You promise. I promise. Ill come back for you. I promise. Ill never leave you. The English Patient has 12 nominations more than any other film but even if there is a surprise tomorrow. Even if another film wins best picture, sans is still guaranteed a lovely evening. Heres this guy from california is going to be the king of hollywood sort to speak. I can accept it. The academy is going to present sans with its most prestigious award. Only director and producers responsible for a career of work has won the sausburg. Most recently steven spielsburg. What he has done is produce some of the most literary films. Including 1975s best picture one flew over the coo coos nest. If mr. Mcmurphy doesnt want to take his medication or orally im sure we can arrange that he can have it some other way. Very good. Yummy. Jevago or lawrence of arabia they would not know how to market. They would say the star of the picture has never been in a film before. Peter otoule. Its all english actors almost all english actors and none of the other actors are stars. Theres no explosion or car chases. Yeah, that kind of thing. No aliens nothing. No cows in the sky. So they wouldnt know what to do. Reporter vance tried to work with fox studios on the English Patient but he says fox and all the other big studios just didnt get it. They wanted to recast scott thomas who is just magnificent in the picture. They wanted a star. An american star. A name, they didnt care about acting ability they wanted a name. And they backed out. And we were just left out hung out to dry. Reporter so a panicked vance left his actors behind while for months he tried to scrounge up money. In the meantime, a Smaller Group put up the money and he put up 11 million of his own. His first millions came from the music world for example queens clear water was on fantasy records. More money comes in from renting his studios to other film makers. Why berkeley . Why not move to hollywood . I love it up here. The bay area is my home. And it doesnt get in the way . No actually everyone in hollywood who visits is envious of people who live up here. Reporter he says he doesnt worry about whether his movies are commercial or not and thinks thats the key to his success. What he looks for in a script is emotion. He says if it moves him it will move other people everyone if people even if people in hollywood dont get it. And oscar winner joan fonatne talks about her life in film
