Bridging the gap between Law Enforcement and the black and latino communities. Thats among the series of conversations at barbershop forums. Reporter station 33 barbershop in oakland played host to this latest discussion. The first topic . Mental health. Law enforcement should not be healthcare providers, and particularly they should not be our Mental Healthcare providers. You dont expect the officers to be mental care experts, but you expect officers to deescalate situations better than a citizen. Individuals that have been arrested, and that are in the process of going through the criminal Justice System but have Mental Health issues. Reporter many are making Mental Health a priority. In oakland, they trained them how to deal with crisis intervention. We have officers that go out as First Responders to diagnose, and see exactly whats going on. And these officers are familiar with them. You go over different aspects of mental illnesses. You touch base on ptsd. Reporter the conversation quickly moved to another topic. One that made some people feel uncomfortable. 95 are Police Officers. You have about 5 that are pigs. Those are the ones that cause all the ill light on the rest of the good officers. I disagree with your statistic. I dont believe that 5 of Police Officers are pigs. I believe maybe theres 1 that are definitely bad apples. Thats true of every profession. As long as we keep telling black men and other people of color and women that cops are pigs, and murdering people on a daily basis, and youve got to look at this one and tell if hes a pig or a cop. Thats a terrible way to live in the society. It says a lot about the men and women in this room that are Law Enforcement that they take the time to come here. So that says something about a lot of you. We dont necessarily put you in that category, because youre here trying to make a difference. Reporter many officers say the way to get better is by having your cabinet reflect your community. If the number is low, why, and i ask because i think those will be the best candidates for the job. We believe exactly like you believe, the best officers would be here from oakland, locally. The City Administration believes that. Reporter officers didnt have the exact figures, but say the number of officers from oakland is a small amount. Thats why they encourage more women and people of color from oakland to apply. However, that in itself is an issue. I work in backgrounds and recruiting. No one comes out to be a police officer. Not from my community. Im from down the street. Im from the 20s. I went to the warriors game with kids. When we came out, there were some bosses on motorcycles. The kids looked like they wanted to take a picture. Some said no. They dont want to be police. Its going to be hard to bring folks inside the community, after seeing their brothers, uncles, some mass incarcerated. If you dont like things that youre seeing, go do it. Go make some change. Reporter for now, the conversations will continue. Giving the community a chance to speak out for a better understanding. Ktvu, fox 2 news.
