But theres only two choices really on the democratic side at the moment. Im wondering if youve put any thought in to it. Obviously there can be circumstances, i think anybody, who knows. In any hypothetical, when its purely hypothetical theres so many varieties of things that usually when i answer hypotheticals i get myself in trouble. So youd have to wait and entertain it once it happened, is what youre saying . I want to see how the primary campaign unfolds and exactly how everything comes together. Its the same with legislation. People are always if this comes to your desk, will you support it . Well, it depends what finally comes to my desk and what looks like and some things youd automatically support, in the end you dont support for one reason or another. Just better to wait and see how a thing gets to you before you announce what youre going to do. A lot of democrats seem torn heading in to the march 1st caucuses. Many think hillary is more experienced but they also have a hard time getting excited about her and they think bernie is true to their issues and comes across as more genuine. What should those folks be considering about hillary . I think if you look at what the country needs, its people want to get excited. I understand that. I have some old friends who grew up in upstate new york. One friends father, a lifetime republican. Hillary came up and she won him over. If you step back and look at what shes done, shes a remarkable candidate. Rarely have we had someone so qualified to be president. Why do you think she has such a big fight on her hands with Bernie Sanders then . I think part of it is just that. For a long time, large amounts of money have been spent with the sole purpose to diminish her. Some of the stuff about the server and that turns out colin powell and Condoleezza Rice had the same issue using private servers, that the state Department Servers werent reliable. Each one of these, large amounts of money are being spent to broadcast it, to make it sound like somehow she didnt make the right decision or shes not governor john hickenlooper, thank you so much for your time. I wanted to start off the bat with the issue of electability. Some of the undecided democrats are worried bernie might lose in the general election because he embraces the term socialist. How is that not a concern . Well, let me be frank. Senator sanders is a selfdescribed democratic socialist and he has not hidden his political ideology. What is definite is senator sanders in these general election matchups between the republican candidates beats these republicans by a larger margin than secretary clinton. He beats donald trump. He beats rubio. He beats cruz. I want to put those folks in colorado at ease that senator sanders is definitely an youre not concerned people wont just hear it as a flavor of socialist . Were not concerned at all. Recently at a town hall senator sanders was asked what is socialism . What does that mean to him . He was frank. It means the top 1 of people in this country should not be the only folks benefiting from the quote unquote american dream. Democratic socialism to him means that education is a right. Healthcare is a right. Thats why hes calling for a medicare for all. Were not concerned with any of the attacks that the republicans might throw the senators way because he has literally been saying the same kind of things for the last 30 years. Hes been consistent in who he is, what he has fought for, and were going to be able to make that case in this general election. I hear from a lot of democrats who feel like senator sanders is truer to their issues but they also look at Hillary Clinton and say shes got the credentials. Shes more experienced. What would you say to someone on the fence thinking about that issue . I think thats a great question. No one doubts that secretary clinton, of course she was secretary of state. No one doubts she has the experience. But senator sanders also has experience. Hes been a legislator for the last 30 years. Hes served in leadership in congress. But he also has something called judgment. And a lot of times when experience is not available to you, judgment is all that you have. Senator sanders has shown time and time again whether it was voting no against going to war in iraq, whether its standing up against disastrous trade deals like the transpacific partnership. The exit polls in the early states show a lot of senator sanders support came from independents. Im wondering how concerned the campaign is about colorado. Because in colorado we have a closed caucus system. You had to have already been registered democrat, unlike open and you can show up day of. Definitely. So senator sanders message we believe is one that speaks to hardworking American People whether theyre black, white, latino, native american, democrat, or independents. If an unaffiliated voter shows up and theyre not registered democrat, theyre going to be turned away. And my question is do you think you can overcome that obstacle . Do you think there are enough preregistered democrats in colorado to put him over the edge . We do think we can overcome that obstacle mainly because we think folks in colorado are ready for the kind of change senator sanders is talking about.
