Fanconi fan voting has long been a part of the game as a kid there is nothing else better than grabbing a little punch card at a game and knocking out the little circles and trying to grab like 30 of them to make sure that you know Kirk Muller gets a spot the All-Star game or whatever but over the years the n.h.l. Had started reducing the number of players they could get voted in one year they were even accused of of turning off the vote when they didn't like where it was headed and anyway this year the n.h.l. Had limited devote so much that the fans could only vote for players a captain for each division the Pacific the central the Atlantic the Metropolitan But for players all you could vote in that just seems to run counter to what the All-Star Game history tradition should be to what we really want with this All-Star Game which is fan and gauging at the end I just hope that everyone that somehow a collective and maybe we can meet the churchyard and in that point they started thinking what if we use the little voting power that we do have to mess with the All-Star game we need that we need someone in there on our way would not be there skate like is a joke we should vote somebody in who just does not the law. And dregs like thought . Fit the bill there and as Greg was thinking about it is. Funny really mess with the n.h.l. Is if we play or a player who couldn't really keep up couldn't really shoot couldn't really handle the puck the slow guy with the bad hands couldn't do anything but let's let's really you know drop a stink bomb in the room and then. It hit the perfect guy. A goal of the league All right. a fashion. Oh yeah oh my god that's the one you don't want to go from that point on there was no other answer to the question like that was the guy that it would have to be. Cut. And would standing there as a trained Joker between 2 guys on a podcast would end up with Sting the fate and fortune of one of the most feared loathed punishing players in the National Hockey League. You be quiet. Yeah change them things for his family to be soft. Oh Ok I'm calling you from my cell phone as s o l much better so this is John Yeah we're good Morgan gave me the thumbs up are a great night my daughters are too so if there's like sounds it's just my daughter cruise around no that's Q I love it Ok Ok so I think to really understand what it was like for John to be on the other end of this to be like you know what the butt of a joke. You need to understand what hockey meant to John like what it meant for him to be playing in the n.h.l. Like everyone has their dreams like when your kid expressed it in the States it's football baseball in Canada when you ask 78 year old we do those projects in class what do you want to be when you grow up and I think 90 percent of the boys are like I'm going to be in the n.h.l. And I always said Oh my parents have all this stuff all over the walls and stuff but yeah I always dreamed of playing the n.h.l. I think everybody that was their big dream so yeah so John has this Classic Canadian hockey kid story where on skates when I was 3 my dad built the rink in the backyard played all the time every single day morning noon and night and you just go to sleep in your gear and wake up in his jumper on the ice skates all 7 or 8 at night and you just jump in bed go to sleep it just kept it on to save time so but the thing about John was that even his a kid I was a monster I came out of the room 242524 and a half inches long and I was 11 pounds 12 pounds I was huge school pitchers was a joke everyone thought I was like a teacher's assistant want to hit like Grade 789 because I was so tall and when you're young and you're that's all you have 000 coordination and so John was never the top guy on his team never the fastest never the most skilled never you know the best of anything I just kind of sorry my daughter just started playing the piano beside us. Yeah if you are you Ok with the piano Lety if I can live I'll get her off oh yeah. It's cute for that last question. Thank. You didn't. Kill you. Well there is something you said. Here let me let me put it to bed one second sir Latino me I really think your time take totally take all keep you on the phone will take to set your she cries there or by that Ok oh she's really. Good questions go to your Mrs. Mississauga so your boss in New York now or. So I am calling you from Boston my cell phone is Boston I my job is in New York but I actually live in l.a. Oh wow you're just like oh yeah. I mean I feel like compared to you you've been all over the map real. You go I'm a. She stuck her. Head is like God what kind of kid do you have to put her down so yes I'm She's like the best kid ever is great I don't know how we lost her she was our number 5 we needed. Anything but perfect we have a natural are we're back our let's let's get back again we're back we're back we're back Ok so did jump back in John please throughout his school years by the time he's getting close to college a lot of his friends are getting you know offer scholarships to different you know big time schools University of Minnesota Boston College places like that for John there was just no interests like coaches thought he was too big to play wouldn't be able to keep up out there on the ice but eventually he did get one offer to play for a mid-level University Michigan tack and I just figured I would in all honesty I would finish college and get a job that would be it I would have got an education for free and you know I play hockey with the guys on the weekends but that was down to the end of hockey but then a couple of things happen 1st at school I kind of always noticed him he met Danielle because he was about 2 feet taller than anybody else on campus they were both engineering students started dating senior year you know he kind of hit things off in the rest of history and the other thing that happened was I got this opportunity to go play for the Houston Aeros Minnesota's farm team minor league team it was a crazy money it was 30000 or 35000 you talk to Danielle. About it he was like well let me give this hockey thing like a go like this the only chance I'm going to get to be able to say I played pro and the way that I kind of looked at it was Oh Ok it's just like a little head start and then once I graduate I like will both get our jobs like our real jobs and move on with our lives. So John moved down to Houston I didn't have any expectations I just worked my tail off I was a bad skater I worked at skating I was a bad passer I would work at passing after practice but he says no matter what he did he would not get any playing time I was always a step or 2 behind I was I think the nines defenseman on the roster and you only dressed 6 for a game so I never played the 1st I think month of the season but while John was in Houston he noticed that there were these other big guys on the team and they were getting playing time they they kind of took me under their wings and they said hey listen if you really want to get noticed down here if you really want to go to the n.h.l. . You should learn how to fight it work perfectly because I know it's what happened . So for those of you who don't follow hockey too much I have guys that might seem to get it I will. Make $109000000.00 a $1000000.00 and they are paid to score and they are paid to perform and play well . But there are also guys out there they are the ugly children of the n.h.l. Who their job is to they are instigators aggravators pester annoy and we call them the rats the past and you can hear these guys like when they're miked up oh you didn't hear like 10 guys turn out running their mouths are you what are you doing out here they try to get under the star players skin cockneys guys only I really still jab and poke at the star players but sometimes I. Still use or stick to Afghan or they'll check them into the board. The train really heard of. Them is doing so in order to deal with pests you've got people like John who are called enforcers So basically my job is to make sure those pasts don't pester my top guys and so we would go into a game I would know exactly who to pinpoint because you know you do your scouting and I would go up to those guys and I would say hey listen if you're going to do that I'm going to put my fist through your face and more often than not just the fear of the retribution if they did something would would stop them you could see. It. But if they did do something my job was to go beat them up and design team player I was a heck of a fighter when I made n.h.l. Chance John can really punch people. Does John would take care of the past they wouldn't fight. I would usually grab their tough guy. And beat him up. If we were playing and we didn't have energy star. I would try to fight to get my guys. Or if it was a really bad guy and I would. Be. It's funny throughout my career I really hated fighting those days where I would sleep at night just because I knew I was going to get into a fight but you just do your job and I think I did my job well well enough that John was able to make a career in the n.h.l. It's everything you dream of as a kid. It was kind of like a leap of faith and it worked out great so by this point Danielle and John had gotten married you know we had bought our 1st house soon after had their 1st 2 kids it's just so beyond anything we are I ever expected would tell me tell me all the names of all the teams that you played for oh my gosh I'm embarrassed. So in 2008 John started playing in the n.h.l. For the Minnesota Wild after that he played for Chicago and New York and Buffalo and San Jose and drove his whole career as an inforce or. There was this shift going on in professional hockey. Runnable a lot of the hockey establishment and media decks in the league were pushing for the game to be more high scoring really to be more about skill and speed. And a lot of people started coming out and saying there should not be a place in this league for fighting and I was easy targets this guy is a good and you haven't seen the movie you don't have to bother this is a good they went after me and they said listen we don't need guys like this in a league there's no room for it in the game there's no room for guys in the game their sole purpose is to punch people I believe the players that play in this league should be able to skate past and not simply ignite a fight they were going to limit players like this which is one of the reasons why my godchild kind of All Star for guys like Greg was Shinseki and Jeff Merrick voting John Scott into the All-Star Game was not just a whole areas joke about a big guy who can skate but who's also a big fat middle finger to the hockey establishment I'm so I'll just do the whole the big point to do it I was so we were on the road and we were on the bus heading to a game or pre-game skate it was December 25th teen John was playing for the Arizona coyote's and a guy who might seem monitors when back or goalie he was sitting beside me and he's like a. You know you're in it was like 56 plays or something you know the fan voting and I was like oh you know it's great people think it's a joke they're going to vote for me a little bit and it was it was nothing serious so that's that so I 1st heard of it on the bus so we go to the we go to the rink we do our skate literally after the skate he checks his phone again and he's like Holy cow man you're like a top 25 it happened that fast and then the next day I was top 5 and then like the day after that I was number one there's a surprise leader and then voting for the upcoming n.h.l. All-Star Game in his name is John Scott seriously it was like a John Scott the enforcer for the mega story Arizona's John Scott is leading the n.h.l. It was unbelievable how quickly a crew chaunce got number one the number one vote getter among all players in the n.h.l. Which meant that John would be an all star game Captain team captain at the All Star game let that sink in for a 2nd and for the fans who are voting for John there is definitely a bit a like oh you shrunk the number of players we can vote in over really we're going to make our votes count then heres Johnny that but I think for a majority of voters voting for John let's be honest it was just really simple the reason John Scott's leaving the voting is because it's funny. John staunch is not an all star he has one goal over 8 games barely plays like in the 3 on 3 format where there was supposed to be a bunch of speed and skill Wouldn't it be funny to see this big Arizona coyotes ogre fighter with no skills objectively bad at hockey. I don't know what he's doing in the league make a fool of himself Oh I hated it this isn't funny anymore I get it like I'm this terrible player who u.s.c. Could be fun to watch me you know fail in this game but I just figured it would end on its own honest I thought it would last a few days and people would get you know there are enough of it and it would go away but I just did it and as for the n.h.l. They were they were pests. I mean to put it frankly I definitely got the sense from some of the people that I speak to on a regular basis the n.h.l. That they were really angry that this was happening and why like I can you get any more specific about why this would have been an embarrassment to them like what is it exactly that they were so sensitive about they're sensitive about the fact that the All-Star Game is something that a lot of old time hockey people and there's a lot of old time occupy that run the National Hockey League see as something prestigious one of the ultimate honors for a player and so this was not something they wanted to happen and it was happening and they didn't really know what to do about it because they didn't have any failsafe in place to prevent it from happening after one day of John sitting atop the all star boat were just like laying in bed the kids are sleeping John gets a text message he gets about a bed goes over to the phones or is reading it and he's just standing there for like for like a while selfishly I'm just want to go to bed but you know I can sell some things just got him stewing over there and it was his p.r. Guy from the coyote's thought to be a good idea to release a statement and they wrote up the statement for me and it basically said thank you for the support I don't want your voice please vote for other guys it might seem basically his own team is saying step away from the all star game I thought of him like respond yeah that statements fine and then delete it and then just sit there and look at it and I just remember asking like do you do you would you want to go and he's just like well yeah I think because as a kid die I watched all the All-Star Games it was so fun to watch and I would dream to be in it so yeah. They want you to release a statement release a statement but make sure that it's true and so John and separating a statement that reads quote It's nice to be thought of by all of the fans and for that I am truly flattered and grateful and while I would love to experience an all star game. I think a few of my teammates are a bit more deserving of of the out and so it's not like I would go if I get voted but there's other people who deserve it more I said yes sure send it out I wasn't totally on board with that but I just wanted to appease the higher ups to hopefully help them but even after that it was still John's got number one vote getter Oh by far yeah it's funny they stopped showing how many votes to players were getting they took that option off the website because I think I was ahead by so many you broke the website yeah so they they took that away and then the n.h.l. They really tried to strong army oh yeah what happened there i'm so I was in my bedroom an Arizona and they called and it was one of the higher ups in an h.m.o. And he just you know want to know how I was feeling I was getting really close to the end of the voting I just said Yeah you know I want to go to the game I think it'll be fun I think it'll be good for everybody involved and he's like really he's sure like you think you'll be able to keep up you think you're good enough like I you're not exactly a skill guy John and they started out way and I just kind of brushed it off you know it's like I can skate pretty well I'm a good decent hockey player and he goes Well you know what do what do you talk to your dad what do you think 1st he goes Are you is your dad a life is like yeah he's a lively where you think he's going to think about this situation you know I think you're you know going to make him proud and I was like wow that's like I don't think that has anything to do is this and I kind of brushed it off and at this time I'm getting a little angry because I'm sick man like this let me flip and play and then he's like well what do you think your kids are going to think when they look back on this do you think they're going to be proud of their dad who went into the all star game this way and as soon as he brought my kids into the equation. I just like lost it. And I kind of snapped back at him like you being a real bleep the bleep bleep I'm pleased we're back and forth and he started cussing me who were here and then like I said just like snap back into Michael he come like yelling at one of the head guys in n.h. I should like dial it back and I apologized like sorry like you know you pushed wrong button let's talk tomorrow I'll let you know if I'm going to go or not I left it like that. John slept on it woke up the next day called to the dude the next morning and said I'm going. After the break we'll see you again. Maybe we'll him it maybe then not enough. Of the team comes up to him and talking to me all the time throughout this all star stuff I thought it was just going to be another conversation about that and he pulls me into the stick room and he's like yeah. I just traded you to Montreal. And I was like Are you effin kidding me what and he said yeah it was a hockey move we you know we we needed a little defensive help and we traded you to Montreal for this guy and I said this is an f.n. Joke Are you kidding me and he said sorry you know the deal's been done I was like Ok whatever super is shady to be traded rate after a and finally in the All-Star game it's like you know if it smells like you know walks like a duck talks like a duck it's there it's fish we called John's former team in the n.h.l. About this neither wanted to talk nonetheless what happened next is that a short while later John is in the locker room gathering my things trying to say good bye to the guys and he pulls me aside again and the g.m. Tell them actually Montreal the team we just traded you to they're not going to demote you they're sending you to St John's Newfoundland their farm team you're in the minor leagues now go see a trainer get your stuff ready or believe in today. The terms of the trade had to be on the plane that same day and that's when I was just like I was done I was there Ok c.-a and I just checked out I went like found somewhere in the rink I called my wife who by the way was 9 months pregnant with twins I get a phone call from John in those situations he's kind of a man of like few words were in the minors now and I'm like Ari will be fine play and see orders a minor team like how do I get there you know and he's like yeah it's literally on the other side of the world it is North America's eastern most city like you could not go further from where I am that right now and still be on this content and I said Sorry I got to go can you please handle all of this take my 2 kids take the 2 kids in your belly take all my stuff pack it up the guy has to leave it's so bizarre to be have to say that sewer and like there's nothing I could have done you just say I'm sorry I have to go and I was just thinking I thought. Ok you know. Just trying to hold on to hope like we can make this work but see where it's like looking at flights like I pull up kayak and I'm seeing like the flights and it's like 16 hours of travel 14 hours of travel 18 hours of travel and like the prices for like a ticket is like $600.00. It really all hit me at that moment and I just like. Compose myself God like you're told to g.m. To go you know or ever and I jumped in the car. Went to St John's. You want to talk about John Scott so we need now the debate you know I guess floor is yours why a comedian legend Don Cherry on the hit t.v. Show Hockey Night in Canada any are you sure that it put him up for debate on the All-Star game what you've done you've taken this kid who would do a pretty good play in 6 minutes but a 12 minute matter. Any contract what you did was your talking point in the minors now what's a fun day I bet you're very proud of yourself because the n.h.l. Mission here is going to been terrific and you're going to try to ruin it all and your ruinous kid is in the players never to come back I bet you should be ashamed you're so obvious should be ashamed or insult that's it I saw this news hit and my 1st reaction was You have got to be kidding me again Gregg. Started the John Scott for all star campaign it was reared Oh man they just make this problem go away with their part of you who is like oh my God Like I I started this this is on me no because at that point you know there had been criticism of us for having this campaign and obviously when John Scott came out I was like you guys ruined my career this sucks and sort of who put it off the bat made you feel like maybe you've done something kind of bad to a dude but the campaign it kind of taken on a life of its own and at that point. John Scott said he wanted to be an all star wanted to represent a certain type of player My role is like almost extinct I'm like the last of my kind out here and like it would be cool to go out with a bang all those friends were saying you should do it he wanted to do it because people are telling him No No And you know I don't mean it necessarily that it was you know that it's your fault or anything but you know way that like you you just not that you could have foreseen it but you started the train was there a part of you that was like oh my god like if I hadn't said that one thing on my podcast like this guy wouldn't have had to uproot his whole life no I mean again like I feel like it was the National Hockey League at this point that was standing in his way now whatever you think about the initial praying or John being demoted this is the moment Greg says when the crowd mood. Totally shifted complete outrage this is transition like complete outrage this is garbage I'm not going to go about on a rant about democracy it became protests this is a lousy thing to do sweeping through the hockey world like look the fans voted this guy in the n.h.l. Is doing all it can to keep this guy out and that's not right you want to change this contact your favorite sports writer in your city since the n.h.l. Is Sunday and image conscious why don't you quit the pressure on your favorite reporter to stand up for John Scott I can only imagine how John feels right now. Well pissed off sorry for yourself and you feel you get sad too a want to play hockey to what I want to do like I do I just quit talking go work like you like you think about all these things but now that you're in the minor leagues are you allowed to play for the All-Star game that's the thing no one knew he says right after he was demoted to the minor leagues people started to you know read through the bylaws read through the books trying to figure out like can a minor league player play in the professional n.h.l. All-Star Game and it turns out there was no rule that even remotely addressed the situation like it was totally unprecedented and so the pressure stayed on the n.h.l. Knew that if John Scott wasn't in the All-Star game there's probably visions from the n.h.l. Of protest signs along the glass then doubt the outside the arena holding a rally because John Scott was snubbed and according to Gregg hockey fans are notorious for throwing jerseys on the ice in protest causing scenes and eventually the National Hockey League had to acquiesce they put out a statement they made a statement saying hey of John wants to go he can go but John says at this point I told everybody I'm not going like the n.h.l. Pierre told all my friends the teammates I'm like I'm done like this is a bogus I don't want to do this he says between the fans making fun of him and the league demoting him the whole thing was just too humiliating but I was just like John you may regret this I know you want to like run away and hide right now and I going in front of all these people the very last thing you want to do but you might regret it she was like let's go a refund for the family the kids will love it I would love to see you go and prove these people wrong my wife was building me back up and soley but surely I was like Ok You know what. This. Let's do a. Very impressive year in. January 31st 2016 Nashville it's a complete circus it was unbelievable but I was obviously the big story so the moment I landed there's reporters everywhere asked me questions John would be representing the Pacific Division in the All-Star game and we had to play it was essential everyone said they were stacked because they had all the stuff players on our team players like. Shane. James Neal all these much younger much higher paid players and then you had. John I knew everybody was staring at me and I'm weird away because I'm going bald and I'm skating around like I wish I would have grabbed my. Dang it's everything is buzzing. Daniele's in the stands with their 2 little kids everybody's looking for him to fail Yeah this dummy's going to make an ass of yourself and before the game comes up to me if I wanted to start I just said no please let me stay on the bench and the coach is like all right but you go in and. John's teammates get up to center ice he's sitting on the bench butterflies in the stomach. Restaurant the pot. Right away 26 seconds into the game. John team goes down when nothing really wanted. A chance. Really. It was like a terrific goal like you with a pass to a one timer shot like it was a goal that all stars make. Them says Scott you're in remember this is 3 on 3 there is a ton of open ice there's nowhere to go there's nowhere to hide and John says that getting up to 10 right he just kept thinking Don't mess up don't stop don't think of yourself and that's all I was thinking about that's got the old shit about center ice I don't belong here you think you're a joke don't screw it up drops it once the puck drops. You just kind of you know. Everything goes away and you just start playing hockey. This was like going back to when I was younger I wasn't the best I was the fastest but you you know you just start playing. And that's what I do. This time you know John seem to possess the. Birds he had the part we're going up the ice. John and his teammates charge across center ice to move into their opponent's zone when. Brant Burns passes the puck to John John manages to control it he's kind of up against the boards and he's using his body to protect the puck trying to figure out what to do next. When he makes this nice little back in. The park on the right wing and all of a sudden I noticed between 2 of the defenders there's this nice little lane right to the net net. Burn spot a Jonny put the parking brake on my stick John just like a few feet from goal and the glue is actually out of position I had a wide open net and I shot it. And missed the net. Like I like a wide open that but the goalie was luckily sliding back into position and so the puck hit the goalie. Off the goalie and into the back of the. Right to go there you go. It was awesome like I was so jacked up I goosebumps like after the ball you saw me feel it was cool everybody was adults it was anything the crowd I don't know how they were going to react Usually they booed me because everybody booed me and they leave they were all for it. The weird thing about the masses too it's like how quickly everybody can go from hating you to loving you it was such a sense is really for me it's a huge monkey was lifted off my back because I was like Ok I did something for the team and mess up and he's going to relax and have fun. Like. The. Way he did. Laid out guy Patrick. And then the 2 of them. Drop their. Forget album I. Got a couple nights is. A really cool shot on goal he was just kind of doing everything and every time John Scott was on camera or touch the puck the crowd would come to life. He was actually very reporting at the game and he was down in the tunnels interviewing other all stars and what happens when you're down in the bowels of the arenas that the All-Star Game is on t.v. Is but there's a delay between what the broadcast how's and what's happening on the ice so typically you'll hear something happen the game before you actually watch it on t.v. And I remember hearing this. And sick roar from the crowd and then everybody kind of looked over at the t.v. And watched the All-Star Game. Thank you Ok so what happened with elicited data was that it was getting to the end of the game tight game Johnson was up by one we were in our zone playing defense and all of a sudden. Their team shot it. We had a save in burns you got the part behind the net. And I just blew the zone I skated on those on as fast so I could because I knew he was going to get it he saw me up the middle and he. Fired a nice pass and I took off down the center of the ice. They had someone hounding me in the John so big Use able to keep his defender off of them so it was just John the goalie and the net he gathered the puck but he ripped the shot corner on the goal. And went in. And they say no goalie deflection know what confounds just a solid skill shot there was just sort of this moment of just lack of laughter from the players being waited to be interviewed laughter in the media downstairs just unbridled joy and much going on and I was just like is even happening like it started to feel like and I think I could physically see this smile on his face from up in the stands the guys on the ice jumped on me they were. The final chapter. Of the John Scott story at least as it pertains to the All-Star game is the really beautiful thing. And so. So there's the scene in Star Trek to the wrath of cod just to. Get us out of this passage where it looks like the enterprise is going to get away having defeated cops but con you. Still live games. And he's going to try to trigger the doomsday device on his ship to kill everybody . And so as as the as the the enterprise is flying away you see a bloodied con say. I should think the hells hard I stab of the funny scene. Grace being 3. Me. When the fans saw that I wasn't on their they when they started the move loudly. Visibly you could you know feel it around the ring. I felt it was the last gasp of all the people of the n.h.l. The tried to keep John Scott out of the All-Star game that was their last chance to get him like Khan trying to get Captain Kirk That's what he was trying to say with the analogy anyway what ended up happening is that jurors in the voting thousands of people wrote in their own choice and when it was announced I said I thank you I thank you with you could it's funny I didn't hear it because on the ice level you don't hear what speakers are playing because they want the speakers to the fan so I didn't I didn't hear and so like somebody like a like going like get your children as a go of weird John States out to the center of the ice laughing looking a little scared boy I was like yeah we feel the also you guys would be I think sometimes there's been all kinds of relations for you thanks I was the 1st thing I just thank you so much you guys Jerusalem. Thank you so much for the ago and in what was the period Disney family's 4th film moment thank you thank you thank you thank you it was hard for me to. Take the risk he was foisted onto the shoulders of this team mate. And paraded around like you're using the greatest sports movie ever. I wanted to go down by the ice so that the kids could see John and she play trying to help me down the stairs and like parting the sea so I could get there by my kids were down with the Banshee my wife and it was so weird like it was literally like Disney wrote a script and said Ok now we kissed wife he kissed me and I slacked and it was just people were kind of like shaking their heads like you know also a little bit speechless now he grabbed his kids he scooped them up in the cliche fashion I grabbed my kids and scaled her home a showcase like daddy's thing she smelled. Like every time I felt like I would just look at him and I can even believe this is happening and it was you know like I just can't. And as they came off the ice there were crowds of people waiting to ask him questions to pictures with but we had a flight the next morning at like 5 am he had to get back to the minor leagues and before that they still had to have these babies so the rushing to give birth to the twins 4 days after they were born I went back to St John's Myin. I think that was really the beginning of the rest of our lives. John finish out that season played one last n.h.l. Game and then retired he and Danielle live with their 5 girls in Traverse City Michigan but the legacy of his All-Star appearance lives on in 2 ways 1st the day after the game it was announced the John Scott's helmet to helmet you. The game would be for. The Hockey Hall of Fame. Game. Which states that any player. Game. It's about. Democracy. And. It's. Stay right here for the Splendid Table that gets underway at noon. I'm Katie Nolan and I host always late with Katie Nolan on e.s.p.n. Too or just regular e.s.p.n. You don't have to say too that makes it sound like it's not good e.s.p.n. But they're the same survey Act So I called you up because it feels like with social media there are now these instances where you have sports fans and you have sports leagues and there's kind of a power struggle in between them no you're absolutely right I think with any time you open something up to the Internet as a whole there's always this anarchy could basically take over right like all it needs to be amplified be given a hash tag make it to Reddit or 4 chan and it's going to become this campaign that's not at all interested in your core issue but is interested in absolutely destroying whatever you're trying to do just to troll essentially that my thing is like with all these online votes anytime anything crazy happens like face that happened with Greenpeace in. 2007 I don't know what he did like a whale thing they wanted people to name this whale that they had tagged to sort of raise awareness for oh I should know something something about like Japanese whale hunting or something so we ended up looking this up it was a plan the. The Japanese Fisheries Agency had to hunt about 50 humpback whales Anyway they tagged this whale they did a vote for what to name it yeah and the Internet took over they named it like Mr splash pants or something Greenpeace at 1st was pissed about it they were like that is not those were not the options that was a write in candidate like we don't want to name him this because this is a serious issue we need to take it seriously they also had an issue with serious voter fraud but anyway kiddies point here is that this is basically what happened with the All-Star Game I also think part of like an ingredient of the John Scott thing and of a lot of things in sports that's kind of important is it's most of the time what gets this backlash or what's causing any sort of issue like this is a lack of authenticity something that's perceived as perceived by the fans as you think you're giving us something quote unquote but you're not actually letting us do what you say you are yeah when they're like send in your tweets and we'll put them on the broadcast and you like yeah but someone's going to read through them and only use the like ones that are exactly what you want them to say or someone's got some shows or like they'll have their producers make accounts and send tweets and use those so they really like the Internet hates that they hate there's nothing they hate more than being told they can like something's going to be one way and then they find out that you were just trying to make it look like a sham democracy listening exactly it's like hey we're totally listening and then it's like no you're not no you're not which was why the job got thing was so interesting because they were letting you follow online how many votes he was getting so they knew there was no way to hide from the fans that it was successful that they were getting this guy voted in the All-Star game and then they even tried to modify their website to make it so you couldn't see how many votes he was getting you could see he was in 1st but you can see by how many votes and so you could tell is the n.h.l. Trying to seize back. All of that narrative by being a little bit more hidden so that's how the n.h.l. Dug in its heels and how we got this great story but it could have gone really differently you know he could have not scored he could have fallen flat on his face he could have felt like he was being played a fool a lot of things could have happened and nurture not just this happy Cinderella story that ended up happening so how do you prevent these potentially messed up situations from happening in the 1st place I asked Katie this question and she said the takeaway to me shouldn't be oh we can't give fans power See this is how they act when we give them power the take away should be like what part of our business are we Ok with allowing the fans to have a say in right and then you're going to have to power through a couple instances of anarchy because it's been decades of sports existing where fans didn't really have a say and we're also in a time period now where fans feel like they deserve a say more than probably ever before because of the Internet you know I get just there's this fear of of that continuing to happen and it getting so bad but like everything's a pendulum will always swing back as long as you don't you know stop it where it is then it's going to swing even faster it doesn't you know it doesn't add up to me and I feel like leagues just their take away every time something. Every time they open it up to the fans and it doesn't go perfectly their immediate response is to never open up to fans again and Kitty says you can even take that Greenpeace story as an example somebody smart I am assume Greenpeace was like let's roll with it it's what they picked Yeah let's roll with it and it got so much press because his name was Mr spicy pants that ended up achieving what they were trying to like Japan stopped what they were doing and it it it did exactly what it set out to do so like to me the lesson there is if you ask people for something and they give you something that isn't what you wanted you can still make it work for you by kind of rolling with the punches and I think with sports leagues it's that something they've been resistant to they are they set out to do this thing they hope that it's going to go exactly how they expect it goes awry because Internet and then they panic and try to get power back again if you if someone's been trying to communicate with you for a really long time and you've had them on mute the 2nd you on mute them they're going to be yelling because they've been trying to get your attention for a really long time and so they're yelling really loud. Eventually they're going to realize you're listening and bring it back down to their interview which is kind of what I think happened with John Scott that makes me wonder like what about when this happens in a political arena. Why do I even believe that with politics I don't know I've never really thought of it that way of like what can we learn from from sports and what's happening in this like microcosm and apply it to society it's so weird because with sports I'm like the beauty of sports and where I've been I was lucky up until kind of recently is like we don't have to worry about the serious scary stuff it's like at the end of the day it's boiling down to like who gets to play in a not even just a game an exhibition game like we're not even voting this guy into like this they'll make up he's being voted into a game that doesn't. Matter but now yeah to hear you say that it's it could be the same for politics it's a little scary because letting the pendulum swing one way is like a lot of bad could happen and you let it swing too far and there's a lot at stake. Lives so it's a little I don't know if I would give government the same advice just let him out of there for a little bit. It's kind of scary. To think you so much. This episode was produced. By.
