Parents across the state are being told they wont get the money they were promised for private schooling and other programs a judge has put a halt on nevadas School Choice program fox5s Shannon Moore is live outside green valley christian with more on the decision and why some say its challenging the constituion families were told theyd start receiving money this february for things like tuition and books. That was until a district judge decided yesterday to grant whats called a preliminary injuction and put a hold on the funding. The judge says a ruling needs to come first in the 2 lawsuits that are currently challenging the Education Savings Account program which nevada lawmakers passed in june it would allow parents to claim more than 5,000 dollars per student each year for education purposes, inclduing homeschooling and private School Funding those filing complaints, including the ac lu say the program violates the separation between church and state because parents could use public money for private religious schools. Theyre also worried about funds being Public Schools. Governor sandoval and the state Treasurers Office responding to the ruling saying their goal was to simply expand education options to many lowincome families. They say theyre dissapointed with the decsion and will work with the attorney general to figure out a way to improve education, while still abiding by the rules. About 45 hundred families already applied for that money, some even pulling their kids out of Public Schools and enrolling them in private because theres a rule the kids have to be in school for 100 days before getting the money. State Officials Say theyll update nevada families as soon as they have more info. Another ccsd Sex Education meeting was held, but this time only a small group showed up to discuss a new curriculum. The special committee considered future lesson plans on Domestic Violence and getting access to contraception. They went through different lesson plans and talked about things that could make their impactful for students. We could add statistics there so they have a better idea of the risk involved. I think people really appreciated seeing things more written out and see what it would look like in a classroom. They also approved supplemental materials to update the old c dc fact sheets in schools, so kids can learn about dangers of stds. The school board will now send the lesson drafts to the committee before it goes back to the school board for possible action. Any possible changes would take effect in the 20162017 school year. The Boulder City Police department is in disarray this morning. The police chief has resigned. Many think it was fueled by his dropping a criminal case against a former animal control supervisor.
