Heaven knows, california needs the rain, but when the heavens opened up today, they unleashed one heck of a storm. Expected to be the biggest of the season. Some parts of the state could get as much as six inches, leaving streets flooded and raising the risk of devastating mudslides. Heres ben tracy. Reporter in the cammeroo springs neighborhood near los angeles, mud washed into streets, causing mandatory evacuations, and nine miles of the Pacific Coast highway are closed from a mudslide during the first wave of storms. He says normal raifl for los angeles is about 15 inches per year. So far, the city has seen 5. 89 inches and would need about 30 inches to significantly impact the drought. Drought impacts from this storm, its going to be a drop in a bucket. We need many storms like this, probably at least 10 goodsized storm systems to get out of the drought. So this will be one of those storms. Reporter now, the rain is really starting to pick up began, and the hope is all the water will stay between this wall of sandbags and these concrete barriers, that will go into storm drains and not into peoples front yards. But, scott, meteorologists say once it starts raining at more than half an inch an hour, thats when we can get mudslides and that often goes over these barriers. That plan will allow millions of people in this country illegally to avoid deportation. Nancy cordes tells us republicans are planning to use the power of the purse. Reporter the top idea is to use next weeks government funding deadline to send a message to the president. House Speaker John Boehner wants to fund the entire government through next fall, except for the kept of Homeland Security, which implements immigration policy. That agency would only get funded for a few months, giving republicans a chance to make targeted immigration cuts once they control all of Congress Come january. Some conservatives want to try to make those cuts now, but most g. O. P. Members seem to side with boehner who is trying to avoid the kind of funding fight that led to a Government Shutdown last year. I think they understand its going to be difficult to take meaningful action as long as weve got democratic control in the senate. Reporter the chancesave shutdown dropped dramatically this afternoon when Senate Leader harry reid signal hed might actually be open to the boehner bill. I think its a shame that theyre not going to include a very important Homeland Security appropriation bill, but i understand why theyre doing it. Reporter its rare for a leader to give way this early, but truth be told, scott, congress has been funding the government in fits and starts for the past few years anyway. So a bill that funds almost the entire government through the end of the fiscal year might actually represent an improvement. Pelley nancy cordes at her post on capitol hill. Nancy, thanks very much.
