Tonight, investigators from the National Transportation safety board are on the scene of a horrifying rail disaster. It happened about 20 miles north of new york city at the end of the tuesday evening rush. A commuter train out of Grand Central terminal slammed into an suv that stopped on a crossing. The explosion lit up the night sky. The driver and five on the train were killed. Several others were injured. Vinita nair is in valhalla new york. Reporter investigators spent the day shifting through charred wreckage trying to figure out why the train plowed into an suv at 60 miles per hour. It was an horrific scene of twisted metal, smoke and flame visible for miles in the night sky. James wallace was in the second car of the train. We sturted to smell gasoline fumes and the fire was getting larger up front ahead of the car. I was thinking this is not the place we want to be. We need to go. Reporter police know the driver of the suv was Ellen Schaefer brody 49yearold mother of three from edgemont, new york. They say she had just been diverted from the scene of another accident when she pulled up to the railroad crossing. She was struck while stopped between the tracks and the Railway Crossing bar. The impact was so strong it peeled away the tracks electrified third rail and rammed it through the front of the first train car. The suv exploded and was pushed 1,000 feet down the tracks. Mike woffert was driving out of his rock climbing business when he saw the impact. He helped dazed victims stumble into his store. Everyone was trying to figure out what was going on, how their loved ones were, how to get home. No one knew what town they were in. Reporter all favorite victims were male, including walter liedtke, a curator at the metropolitan museum of art and erick van de car, a Financial Trader in new york. A derailment in 2013 killed four and dozens were injured in may of that year when two metro north trains collided in connecticut. There are conflicting reports as to whether the driver of the suv was inside or outside of her vehicle when that train struck. The investigation is still very active. Just moments ago they pulled the train away there the track where it stopped. Pelley thanks very much. Then outside boston a commuter train slammed into a tractortrailer. The truck driver jumped. Hes all right. One minor injury among the passengers. All of this a reminder that rail crossings are some of the most dangerous intersections in america. Heres transportation correspondent jeff pegues. Every three hours in this country, a person or vehicle is hit by a train. Last october in monroe, louisiana, several people witnessed a violent collision when a train plowed into a truck. Oh, my god in 2014, there were 2068 socalled highway rail incidents which killed 239 people. 87 of fatalities occur as a result of a drivers actions and poor judgment. In maitland, florida a woman narrowly escaped disaster last may when she jumped in a car right in the path of a train. In december, also in braintree, massachusetts, karin karin and son jake ran from their car seconds before impact. Ran to the sidewalk, took me 20 seconds to get there and turn around and the train had hit my car. Reporter it is getting better. The number of collisions at crossings have dropped by 85 since 1978. The federal Railroad Commission credits improvements such as installing flashing lights and gates. Also greater enforcement of laws requiring at least 20 seconds warning before a train reach answer intersection. Ultimately improvements to the nations infrastructure could help avoid collisions altogether. Kathy waters, a former executive at several major transit agencies is currently with the American Public transportation association. It would mean taking the road and elevating it or putting it under or elevating the Railroad Tracks so that they dont ever come together.
