We felt like he was as determined as we were to get the story out and help us catch this person to really keep it alive. Another honor for our walt hunter, he was recognized today by philadelphia Fire Fighters union. Walt was given a plaque for his reporting over the past 44 years. It is walts last day on Eyewitness News as he prepares for a much deserved retirement. What is a celebration without cake. Senior Investigative Reporter walt hunter is retiring, just a few weeks ago walt and i chatted about his history and future. At norristown courthouse walt hunter walt hunter. At Maguire Air Force base walt hunter. Simple, walt says, after 36 years, it is time. It is almost like, directly from college that you love you dont want to go, commencement time, love to stay but there is another world out there. Walt started his career working in newspaper and radio but when he joined Eyewitness News in 1980, he found his home. He was always there running around like a loon particular trying to get latest story or scoop. Reason to believe state the of defense would want to listen to them. I dont know if they want to listen to our conversation. He was a bull dog, and gotti hold of your ankle an wouldnt let go. Reporter sometimes walt reported under fire. Those shots are very close to us right now. Reporter as he did during the move confrontation and bombing in 1985 where 11 people, including five children, died. What do you remember about that moment. I was just almost out of my mind, i never told this story on tv but i went home, went to the back patio of my house and started screaming. I was just almost out of my mind thinking about people dying, so needlessly. Reporter walt has been on the scene of some of the biggest stories including sadly, police shootings. The scene, so many police officers, who are shot, wounded, and in terrible ways. Reporter he keeps photos at his desk. I think walt felt himself the impact it had on the entire department and certainly on the entire city, the fact that he holds on to those photographs means a lot to me personally. Reporter walt is a broadcast pioneer hall of famer, he has more than 20 emmys and dozens more award from journalism organizations. Last week Philadelphia Police gave him a citizens commendation. He doesnt plan to rest on his laurels. I want to write, i want to speak to people. I have the opportunity, thank god with my health, with my family, to now try to do other things. Were losing one of the vanishing breed in my judgment. Walt knew how to hit the soul and heart of matters of people and that meant something to people. That is not that others cant step in and fill that void but there will never be another walt hunter. Amen to that. Isnt that the truth. We signed a huge card for walt. I found a little space. A little space and i just put simply the best and that goes for on camera and off. That is what is so wonderful about him. Our celebration of our good friend at walt continues at 6 00.
