Tonight he opens up into how technology is revolutionizing education. We want kids to be creators, not merely consumers about increasing concerns over privacy issues as personal information is misused on the web. Privacy to us is a human right. And the most consequential issues americans face including immigration. The daca situation i am personally as an person deeply offended by. From chicago, this is revolution, apple changing the world. Here are Msnbcs Chris Hayes and rickios cara swisher. Welcome to Lane Tech CollegePrep High School here on the northside of the great city of chicago. Were here tore interview a leader of a company that revolutionize the way we communicate. One of the most recognizable brands on the planet and also crucially the most valuable company in the entire world, apple. Its poised to become the worlds First Trillion Dollar Company raising new questions about its role and responsibility in everything from job creationing to education tox privacy protection. Were going to talk about that and more so lets bring out the ceo of apple, tim cook. Good to see you. Tim, thank you for coming. I think theyre all excited to get new iphones from you. Just to be clear, this is not a discussion, youre not announcing a new iphone here, is that correct. Thats correcting. Sometimes you tease them. Sometimes. Were going to be talking about education. You have an event here in chicago about education. And about ipads and different things. Why dont we talk a little bit what youre trying to do. Yeah. We announced a new curriculum called everyone can create. In recognition that in addition to the regular courses that people get in school, that you could actually, if you intersect those with technology, you can amplify the level of learning and creativity in these classes. The purpose is that our view is that education is a great equalizer of people. Uhhuh. And that if you look at many of the issues that we face in society today, that you can find their root in that people dont have access to quality education. Maybe i dont have access at all. And that the country should be investing more in that. And what weve identified some areas that we think we can help in. One of those is in coding education. Right. And so we not only have a curriculum around coding but we crafted our own programming language, created it. But one of the things you focus on and announced is there arrangement with the city of chicago and northwestern university. Yes, yes. Which youre going to help teachers learn. Thats right. Explain that. Explain that and then i want to get into the idea of whether everybody should code. What were doing is what we found is that most all Teachers Want a level of coding for their classes. You know, i talked to a teacher in toronto a couple months ago that had integrated coding into her mathematics class and she found that her students learned the mathematics lessons much faster and much deeper with coding introduced. You know, our products help engage students in the learning process more. I mean, this is a proven thing. And so what were doing at northwestern is working between northwestern and lane tech which is at the high school that youre at obviously working together to offer training to every teacher in the in the system that wants to come. Free training. Free professional development. And helping them integrate coding into their classes. One of the things that i hear a lot in Silicon Valley is if youre not creative, youre not going to have a job. Theyll be replaced by a computer either by ai or automation or thing like that. We can talk about that, but besides coding, lets talk about where jobs are because theres people working already and threw have to be retrained and change for the economy. Can you talk about where jobs are and what people who are currently work having to do to educate themselves . Yeah, i think number one, i think we all have to get comfortable that education is sort of lifelong, a lifelong requirement. Its no longer sufficient to go to school for 12 years and maybe some more in college and then call it questions for a lifetime. Jobs will be cannibalized over time and replaced by others and now, those people that embrace that are going to do incredibly well. And certainly the system to help people retrain has to be put in place in largely needs a lot of work right now. To do that. But there are going to be incredible jobs in ai, ar. Im a huge fan of augmented reality. I think it is huge. You are. Its profound, right . There will be still incredible jobs in. Fields that exist today. I think were probably, i think the narrative around doom and gloom is not correct. What is it then . Well, i think its more of if you look back in history, when i started working as an intern, if i had a question for the accounting department, i went to the accounting manager and they would take a journal and open up the journal and find where they had manually recorded something. Obviously, spread sheets came along and that automated some of that, and then more and more things happened over the time with enterprise systems, et cetera. So weve had this significant productivity change in the United States for a long time. And there have been jobs that had been displaced. But frankly, many more jobs have been created than displaced. What we didnt do a good job of is taking care of the people that were displaced and getting them into the jobs that were being created. That is a muscle the u. S. Has not done a good job of building. And not for lack of trying. I mean, you know, this solution, right, you got the trade adjustment act, all sorts of job retraining funding starting way back in clinton. You know, the idea was look, we now live in this era of creative destruction. Jobs are going to go away and the solution to that is retraining. It hasnt really worked. I mean on scale it hasnt really been effective. Is there a responsibility that you at apple or other Tech Companies have to be part of that rather than that being something that the state does . Yes, i think as is the case in most huge problems that are complex, we should not all sit around waiting for government to tell us what to do. You know, this should be something that government and business are working together on. And i do believe we have a responsibility. I feel it. But it is a narrative from Silicon Valley its going to be like farming to manufacturing. More and more jobs. Talk a little about the displaced. What cant can you be doing now . If tower a worker, what would you be worried about . Well, i am a worker. And of a sort. Of a sort. Of a sort. I think most people would say im a worker. Youre a hard worker, tim. But no, i think that all of us should count on, theres an element of what each of us do that will be automated over time. And part of that, by the way, we should all say thank god because were all working too much. Wouldnt society be great if we all worked a little less but we didnt have to dial down our output. That wouldnt be so bad. But i do think that we all have to get used to the idea of continually learning, refreshing our skills for the jobs of tomorrow. The jobs of tomorrow right now are heavily software based. If you look in this country today, theres a half a million jobs that are not being filled. Theyre all software. That half a million, theres more jobs that arent being filled arent software but theres a half million software. Thats a huge gap. That number is projected to go to 2 million over the next three to four years. And so that is enormous, right . And weve got to get more people interested in coding. Weve got to reach out to women and underrepresented minorities that have been too low in and i feel for apple, were going were taking the responsibility of doing that. Were not just saying hey, this school only has 20 women in this curriculum and so i cant hire any more women. Right. I think thats a cop out. I think the businesses doing that are not viewing their responsibility correctly. Businesses should be more than about making revenues and profits. You know, part of responsibility or social contract for anyone right, citizens, nonprofits, corporations is how we interact with the government, taxes is one part of that, as well. Regulation. You know, apple just announce this had Huge Investment in the u. S. , right . Prepatrioted all this money from an ground, paid a onetime tax fee. Theres a question now, does that change how apple works Going Forward . The big argument about this tax bill was the u. S. Tax code was uncompetitive and it forced companies to do things like incorporate in places like ireland or the island of jersey so that they could avoid the onerous rate. Now that thats changed the and the money brought back, does that change how apple legally exists in terms of where its incorporated and what taxes it pays . Yeah, what it does, chris, is that it allows you to take earnings that you are earning in other countries in the world, maybe youre earning them in latin america or the middle east or wherever youre selling your product and it allows you to take those earnings and invest in the United States without a further penalty. Right, but is that a wup time thing. No, thats an ongoing thing. Lead to the way you guys are incorporated. That was ongoing. That was the biggest thing in the tax thing from a corporate point of view. For your viewers i want to distinguish corporate versus individual. We took no position on individual because we would just be a part of the peanut gallery. We have no special expertise there. Its not something i would have done, right . In that way, but the corporate piece i do believe is good for america. Because i think what the result of it will be is america will having higher investments. And thats essential. What about jobs that apple has in this country . Obviously, youre not going to make iphones here. You never have. Youve made them abroad the entire time. So have other companies created things. What would apple what would apple bigger apple business look like then . Were hiring at least 20,000 people in the u. S. Right . So thats not a small amount. But the number of jobs we will create including that work for other people weve already created 2 million in the u. S. And a milon five of those. So the as things iterate out . But not too far iterating out too far. A million and a half of those write apps for your iphone or ipad. Million and a half. The unbelievable thing about this is the party of one can sit in the basement of their home whether theyre in a rural area, urban area, wherever they would like to be and they can create an app and all of a sudden, they can sell their product around the world that has been an unbelievable empowering thing. So you dont see it as like a big factor . President trump has said that, hes been pressing people. Heres what i see in, can we are building things in the United States. And its not true that iphone isnt built in the United States. Lets talk about that for a minute. Heres the truth. There are components of iphone built in the United States. The glasses is from kentucky. There are many chips, silicon chips that are all made from all over the United States. Theres equipment that goes into manufacturing it thats all over the u. S. The very sophisticated face id module on the iphone x will be played in the United States. In texas. In texas. Yes. And so there are plants going in in. Different places and we have always made many of the parts here. What people just fitch eight on because i think its just its just a misunderstanding is that they just see where the final product is assembled. And say oh, that is not done in the u. S. But in a global world, you begin to do things in a variety of countries. And so you source components somewhere, some other components somewhere else. You assemble yet somewhere pems and then those products go everywhere in the world. Thats how a Global Society works. Theres existing political pressure around this idea of opening jeff Bay Headquarters thing. The idea of it. Is that. I dont feel political pressure. Look what we want to do at apple, we know that apple could only have been created in the United States. We know that. This company would not have been started in any other country in the world. It would not have the flourished in any other country in the world. It the vast majority of our research and development is done here. And so we love this country. You know, were patriots. This is our country. And so what we want to create as many jobs as we can in the u. S. We dont need any political pressure for that. Weve already been doing that. A and anwe want those to be as across as much of the u. S. As possible. Weve got a huge amount of people in california. We have a huge amount of people in texas as a company and so we said you know, were going to create a new site. And were going to create it in a state other than california and texas. Theres 48 more. Theres plenty more. And were not doing the beauty contest kind of thing. Thats not apple. What do you think about the beauty contest model . Im watching cities line up to essentially throw subsidies and in some cases hundreds of millions of tax dollars at amazon to get them to come. Youve got foxconn in wisconsin that signed this big contract and the subsidies are now looking like theyre hundreds of millions dollars there. What do you make of that kind of competition . I think that each state, i think the great thing about the u. S. Is is freedom. And i think if states want to compete for things, then god bless them. I think thats sort of thats a part of america. And so i dont condemn it. I think its their decision but from our point of view, we didnt want to create this contest because i think because i think what comes out of that is, you wind up putting people through a ton of work to select one. And so you wind up that is a case where you have a winner and a lot of losers unfortunately. I dont like that. You know, my, most things in life i do not view as win lose. We always the best things you can ever do in business is find the win win. You know, whoever youre working with, if youre trading between countries, you find a way for both to win. If youre working with a partner in business, find a way for both to win. That contest is set up as a winlose and not something i want apple to be a part of. Up next on revolution, your privacy and the shot heard around the tech world. If you were mark zuckerberg, what would you do right now . What would you do . I wouldnt be in this situation. Sfx muffled whistle text alert. Im your phone, stuck down here between your seat and your console, playing a little hidenseek. Cold. Warmer. Warmer. Ah boiling. Jackpot. We are back with apple ceo tim cook. In the wake of the news about data scraping by Cambridge Analytica and facebook you had this to say recently. I thought it was quite interesting. You said its clear to me that something, some large profound change is needed. Im bernally not a fan of regulation because it can have unexpected consequences to it. However i think this situation is so dire and become so large that probably some well crafted regulation is necessary. What did you mean . Look, if weve never believed thaech these detailed profiles of people that have incredibly deep personal information that is patched together from several sources should exist. That the connection of all of these dots that you could use them in such devious ways if someone wanted to do that that this was one of the things that were possible in life but shouldnt exist. Right. It shouldnt be allowed to exist. And so i think the best regulation is no regulation is selfregulation. That is the best regulation. Because regulation can have unexpected consequences, right . However, i think were beyond that here. And i do think that its time for a set of people to think deeply about what can be done here. Now, the cynic in me says youve got other Tech Companies that are much more dependent on that kind of thing than apple is and so yeah, you want regulation here because that would essentially be a comparative advantage that if regulation were to come in on this privacy question, the people its going to hit harder arent apple, its places like google and facebook. The skeptic in you would be wrong. The truth is we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer, if our customer was our product. We could make a ton of money. Weve elected not to do that. Our products are iphones and ipads and macs and home pods and the watch, et cetera. If we can convince to you buy one, well make a little bit of money, right . But you are not our product. You are our customer. You are a jewel and we care we care about the user experience. And were not going to traffic in your personal your personal life. I think its an invasion of privacy. I think its privacy to us is a human right. Its a civil liberty. And in something that is unique to america. You know, this is like freedom of speech and freedom of the press. And privacy is right up there for us. And so weve always done this. This is not something that we will just started last week when we saw something happening. Weve been doing this for years. Lets go to that privacy an interview i did with steve jobs with Walt Mossburg and i did with him right before he died actually where he was talking about this very subject. Privacy means people know what theyre signing up for in plain english. And repeatedly. Thats what it means. Im an optimist. I believe people are smart. And some people want to share more data than other people do. Ask them. Ask them every time. Make them tell you to stop asking them if they get tired of you asking them. Let them know precisely what youre going to do with their data. All right. Lets talk about that. What happens now with facebook, google, the others . Theres been a lot, theres going to be senate hearings, all kinds of things. Well, i dont think all companies are in the same position. Okay. Right. So i think one thing that is necessary is for i think Everybody Needs to understand Silicon Valley is not monolithic. Right . I know its ease to kind of group people that are the same market cap or big together. Lots of hoodies. Yeah, but life is really different than that. These companies are very Different Company to company. And so what i think has to be done, we have to think about how how this these profiles can be abused. And i might have a different view than you. I might be more on the privacy side than most, right . And i suspect everybody has a personal different level of sharing that they will do. But everybody should know what theyre doing. Everybody should know what theyre giving up. And not only the specific data point but the issue is more the whole line that people can draw. Right . Its the when i know this plus this plus this plus this, i electric infer a whole bunch of other things. And that can be abused and it can be abused against our democracy. It can be abused by an advertiser, as well. To me its creepy when i look at something and all of a sudden its chasing me all the way across the web. I dont like that. Particularly when i bought it. So i think what has to be done is the type of information has to be looked at that companies can can hold. I think the connection and sources of data have to be looked at. When you own many Different Properties, when youre the owner of many Different Properties and i can take the information i learned about you from this property, add it to what i learned about you here and here and here and here and theres no reasonable alternative for people. Right. This is not good. But you also have Third Party Apps. Or course. That your apps get information from. And thats it the issue around facebook is a Third Party App problem besides them collecting information. So first, what would you do about what do you do more about your Third Party Apps to police them . Policing is the big issue around facebook and then if you were mark zuckerberg, what would you do right now . Weve always been weve always been focused on cure ration. Weve always believed in cure ration. So weve always felt as a platform owner, thats a huge responsibility. Right. And that we should cure rate. So. Youre a media company. Whatever you want to call us, we cure rate. We believe that we doesnt want porn on our app store. We want families to be able to feel comfortable there. We dont we dont want hate speech on our app store. Right . And we dont want the ability to recruit terrorists on the app store. So were looking at every app in detail, what is it doing . Is it doing what its saying its doing . Is it meeting the Privacy Policy that theyre stating, right . And so were always looking at that. Should we raise the bar even more . Were always looking at improving and raising the bar. But we dop carefully review each app and police now. And we dont subscribe to the view that you have to let everybody in that wants to or if you dont, you dont believe in free speech. Right . We dont believe that. We dont believe that because were like the guy on the corner store, what you sell in that store says something about you. And if you dont want to sell that other thing you dont sell it. It doesnt mean that you cant use an iphone to go to your browser and go to some porno site if you want to do that. Nobody does that. But im not making fun of it. But im just saying but its not what we want to put in our store. We want kids to go to the store. Right . Because kids, theres a lot of learning, Education Apps in the store. And so this is something weve always felt really responsible for. Mark zuckerberg, what would you do . What would i do . I wouldnt be in this situation. Okay. All right. A followup to that, right . So theres a facebook app in the apple store, right, in the app store. Is there a point at which you start to reevaluate that because the practices are something that you dont want to essentially be selling in your store. The question is do they meet the guidelines of the app store and do they meet their policy, right . But i think that well crafted regulation could change that policy. Right . And if that happened or if we raised the bar some, then you know, we have to look at it. But. One followup question about sort of this idea of cure ration. And then i want to get to the audience. Apple tv is another platform. It streams a bunch of different things. Theres different apps, nratv is one of those things. I should say full disclosure i work for a Company Called comcast that runs nratv. But you guys have this view that you have a different view than a lot of Silicon Valley, that you are curating these things. One of the questions we got the most out on twitter because of all the focused right now on the nra and your praise of the parkland students was why is apple streaming nratv and how should we interpret that in the context of the kind of ethos that you just described. Thats a good question. First of all, we dont stream it. We dont stream it. We place the app in the app store so somebody can go in and download it and they stream the content. So the question on the, that, certain app is we dont want to take a view that you throttles the Public Discourse on something. Right . The Public Discourse is an important part of democracy. Discourse is democracy without discourse is not a democracy. Right . And so now, do i like their tactics, their positions . Honestly, no. In some of the things theyve said are unbelievably distasteful. And i dont even think represent their members well, right . From the people that i know from my heritage in the south and so forth. But their point of view along with the alternate point of view, i think its actually important for the public to hear that. And i wish it could be done in a not vitriolic tone and the all of the accusation and personal attack that is on there. I dont subscribe to any of that at all. And you can bet that we continue to monitor and if it walks into the path of hate speech or some of these other things, then were cutting it off. All right. Its sort of a in some ways its sort of a perfect illustration of just how thorny this has gotten for everyone. Mark zuckerberg is talking about were trying to figure out whether calls to ethnic cleansing against the rohingya in applyian mar violates our policy. You guys have a lot of power right now. I want to take a. But i do want to make this point is in a in a democracy, free speech has to have as wide a definition as possible. I agree with that, yeah. Right . It doesnt have to include hate speech at least in my definition of it, right . And certainly our store isnt subject, were not the government. Its not subject to that the rule. But we do want to allow as wide a discourse as possible without stepping it over the line, right . We want to bring in an audience member, Sarah Conklin who works in social media marketing. Whats your question, sarah. Hi, i wanted to know whats something that we as individuals could do starting today to protect our own privacy and then start fighting for the privacy of each other. Thats a great question. One, i would make sure i understood the Privacy Policy of every app and website that you frequent. Every one of those. And i think that you know, the problem with these is theyre 20 pages long and written by lawyers. And that is one of the problems in and of itself. Theyre not written in plain english because they dont want people to understand them. But i do think its important that people try to understand what it is that youre giving up. And i think in many cases you might elect to do Something Different than youre doing, maybe go to another business or whatever that has a policy that is more in line with your values. So i think thats the most important thing is to become deeply aware. I would also, if youre very concerned about privacy, id go into private browsing mode. We placed that in safari. So that will prevent some things from happening. Not everything. I would think by blocking cookies. These Little Things that follow you everywhere youre going and so forth. I would be if you have kids or if youre a guardian, i would be extremely careful as to what theyre doing. And because i think the preying on kids are sort of the worst thing in the world that can occur. And that is something that i deeply worry about. Tim, before you get to the next section, you were very strong on encryption because you brought it up, the idea of protecting privacy. Yeah. The most and you went against the government. Yes. Against the fbi. Today, same thing . Apple sticking with that . Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. The let me give you the short version of this is the the cyber risk for all of us individually and as a company has gone up exponentially even since that occurred. The only way to protect your data is to encrypt it. There is no other way known today. And so if i were you, i would do business with no one that wasnt doing that. Now, it is a thorny issue from a Law Enforcement point of view. Because they may want to know what youre saying. And i dont have access to what youre saying. And my view is kind of simple is, i dont think that you as a user expects me to know what youre telling people. Right. Right . Im not eavesdropping on your messages and on your phone calls and dont think i should be in that position. And so if they tried to compel us as they did two years ago, they tried to force us to create a piece of software that would have if stolen opened hundreds of millions of iphones in the world, we said hey, theres lots of Things Technology can do. That one shouldnt be done. It should never be created. And so we refused. They said you cant refuse. We can make you do it. We said no, you cant. Its against the constitution. And right before they went to court they dropped the case. And so if that same circumstance rose again, we would fight because this again is a value of america. Right . You should not be able to compel somebody to write something that is bad for civilization. Right . This is fundamentally wrong. I live right here in auburn, i absolutely love this community. Once i moved here i didnt want to live anywhere else. I love that people in this community are willing to come together to make a difference for other peoples lives. Together, were building a better california. Were back with apple ceo tim cook. Obviously, the atmosphere, the rhetoric in the country on immigrationing is very intense right now. And i saw an interesting story about colleges reporting on the numbers for foreign students applying for the u. S. Theres been an appreciable decline. That clearly seems to be related to the rhetoric coming from the white house particularly. Apple is a company that employs a lot of immigrants. What are you guys seeing on the frontlines . Is it harder to recruits people to come here given the current political environment. Yeah, i think on the student visa piece, i there part of it is the rhetoric. I think part of it is the cost of college is too high. And that not only affects our folks domestically but it affects the international, as well. And there are other International Schools that are you know, becoming more competitive, as well. But heres what were seeing. I talked to a lot of the folks in our company. The daca situation is one that that i am personally as an person deeply offended by. D by. Americn deeply offended by. Americ the daca situation is not an immigration issue. Its a moral issue. This is a moral issue. And this this is one that goes to the core of who we are as americans. Who among us would think that its the right thing to do to kick somebody out of this country that came here when they were 1, 2, 3 years old that have only known this country as their home that know no other country as their home. This just doesnt make any sense. And so i dont like that the gun was ever fired here. It should have never been fired. In terms of revoking, the president should not have revoked it. The attorney general should not have revoked it. Whoever revoked should not have done this. This is ishould not have done this. This is tshould not have done this. This is should not have done this. This is and i dont see this as a apart san issue. This is not about whether youre red or blue, conservative or liberal. This is about america. Right . This is that simple. And so im very disappointed with both parties. That they have not acted. What have you been doing . You had met with president trump. You were you had different meetings with him, talked about these issues. You brought up daca. What are you all doing now . Because you didnt think it would get this far presumably. But what can you do now . You spent a lot of time on all kinds of other things. I was just on the hill a few weeks ago, two or three weeks ago and this was a subject in every meeting i had. Because at this stage, the people who can change this are inside the beltway. And so all of us that feel passionately about this have to put our emphasis on those people that can vote. And weve got to bring them to action. How . Both parties people privately both parties are telling, everybody im meeting with regardless of whether they have an r by their name or a d are telling me that they do not want any of the daca folks to leave this country but theyre not doing anything and that has to change. Leave this country but t not doing anything and that has to change. So how . What can apple or the tech stli or people you have some influence, what can you actually do . Push on congress and you push on the administration. Youre lobbying on there. Oh, absolutely. Im personally lobbying on this. I mean, this is i think that without racor, people can discuss the future immigration strategy for the United States. Coming up, more on tim cooks plans to improve education and why he thinks apple will succeed where others failed. Honestly, our perspectives are teachers are jewels. And were not we dont believe that technology can replace teachers. What does it take to make Digital Transformation actually happen . Do you just flip a switch. And presto your business is magically transformed . Not quite. It takes a groundbreaking company like dell technologies. A family of seven Technology Leaders working behind the scenes to make the impossible. Reality. For instance, were helping to give cars the power to read your mind from anywhere. Were helping up to 40 of the nations donated blood supply. To be redirected to the areas and people that need it most. And were even developing technology to create a whole new vision for the blind. So while you might not see what were doing. What were doing is changing the way we all see the world. Magic cant make Digital Transformation happen. But we can. Lets make it real. Its been an interesting relationship over the years. Its something Silicon Valley depends on. You need people and know how to code and there is this way youve seen folks from tech, the gates foundation. Bill gates retired from microsoft view education as a problem to solve. Right . Its not working, we need to come in there and do it and there is hard lessons of humility there, right. It looks harder than maybe it is. Do you feel like you have a sense of the challenges of education that you hear from the folks youre partnering with . Yeah, i think weve been in the classroom for 40 years, and so thats a big difference. I think too many people are standing on the sidelines and say and blaming the teacher or blaming administration or blaming whatever. And honestly, our perspectives are teachers are jewels and were not we dont believe that technology can replace teachers. We think its the amp amplification [ applause ] our products are tools and we make tools for people to be able to amplify their performance. They help people, not replace people. So its the intersection of an inspirational teacher that cares ke deeply and honestly, 99. 9 of the teachers met fall in that category. I want to go to an expert on education. The ceo of public schools, janet jackson. [ applause ] so this is a question that comes from twitter, and it relates to exactly what were talking about. Were like how do you make this work in the classroom for a source of equity. John says what is the point Additional Technology in the close room stops helping students and starts distracting them . I think it depends on the teacher. And so what were excited about with apples approach is this intersection between technology and it has teachers at the center, which is critically important. I think that when teachers plan lessons well, when students know how to use technology to be more efficient and effective in the classroom, i think it can only enhance the learning thats taking place. I was a classroom teacher. There are many Classroom Teachers in this room that say students find all types of ways to be distracted but there is one way i was distracted before a smart phone, amazingly. True. What i have also observed is when you Bring Technology into the room and allow students to create something new and take ownership of their learning, they become much more engaged and technology is a great way to do that. Were excited about opportunities and access. Were really excited about this partnership. I think as adults, were coming into this and learning importance and its being driven by the technology but mostly being driven by the demand from students. They learn differently asking us to catch up with the 21st century. Tim, tim, some people could look, you want workers. There is such a deficit in the job. How can you make that argument coding is the answer . I want america to be strong first and foremost. I want america to be strong. One base for that is i think Everyone Needs to learn to code. I think that in todays environment, it touches everything we do from the way you get your news to order things. Software is nothing more or coding is nothing more than a way to express yourself. Its a language. The course spills encoding, Critical Thinking, problem solving, these are things that are modern day skills required for living. You need Critical Thinking to detect whats fake and whats real. Right . We need a lot of that. Well [ laughter ] and problem solving skill is a basic skill. Whether youre in construction, whether youre in farming, it doesnt matter what kind of field youre in, problem solving is a basic skill and so its not our expectation that everybody becomes a Software Programmer for life by any means. The vast majority will not, but its important that people understand the basics of coding like its important for people to understand the basics of mathematics or other core subjects. Where do you see the challenges and responsibilities for the Tech IndustryGoing Forward. Youre a leader but there is a sense they really have to step up and grow up in a way. Well, because tech has become such a large percentage of the economy, generally speaking, the problems of the country are the issues that tech needs to deal with, right . So we talked about retraining earlier. Right. Tech needs to play a major role in this. I think we have incredibly great people in the United States. I think keeping america making sure america is welcoming to people because the products of today and tomorrow will be global products. You know, and so you have to have people that represent the market that youre selling to and so you need people from around the world and so i think its very important that we have that mind set and im i am optimistic that we will. Current issues aside. I think the ark for america points in the right direction.
