Minnesota congresswoman ilhan omar has been the victim of criticism. The attacks reached a new level of escalation this week in reaction to distorted takes on marchs comments at a recent event hosted by the council on americanislamic relations. Here are representative omars actual comments. Cair was founded after 9 11, because they recognize that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties. Sno many on the right cut down that phrase some people did something and used that snippet to asail the congresswoman, even questioning her loyalty to the United States. Some people did something, like an unprovoked attack killing people in the pentagon, thousands at the pentagon, the flight 93 as well as the World Trade Center. Really . You have to wonder if shes an american first. Wow. New york post piled on with this inflammatory cover on thursday. Then last night fox news superfan donald trump took things to a shocking new low. Tweeting out a graphic video of the twin towers burning interspersed with that single snippet of the congresswomans speech. We wont show you that video because it is so inflammatory it falls into a category where most news organizations wouldnt even play it on tv. Yet it was released through the preferred Public Information tool of the president of the United States. Making it akin to an official public statement. Many are calling trumps tweet and that video an incitement to violence against the congresswoman, particularly is in it comes one week after a selfdeclared trump supporter was charged with threatening to kill representative omar. Joining me now is former state Department Senior adviser and former white house director. A journalist and author of the view from fly over country. Theres so much you can unpack here. The out of context statements and hysteria surrounding what congresswoman omar said one period but the president of the United States putting out this video which we can show. We have standards. We cant show it on television. I come from Staten Island and we lost a lot on 9 11. We lost half of our local fire department. Of the top five, top ten zip codes that lost people on 9 11, Staten Island had five of those. I almost lost my father that day. He was to be at a luncheon that day. I lost the ability to selfdefine what it means to be a muslim woman in America Today and that is an indelible part of the post9 11 history and memory of the United States, in particular for new yorkers. Those images are extremely triggering, and when Rupert Murdoch put those towers falling next to ilhan omars image that new yorkers will see, he knew what he was doing. He was triggering these reactions of fear. Republicans often talk about triggering the libs and how much snowflakes we are. That was a use of words and language to trig are conservative and antimuslim sentiment. The irony is the same people who use those words for their own political gains will argue that you have to be very careful about how you use other words for ilhan omar and also then vote against on a policy forum, the things that would generally benefit the victims of 9 11, the patriot act they voted for that. They will use these words entirely to their advantage while denigrating an entire population in america. We just spoke last week about the ways in which people give themselves license to talk about ilhan omar, who came from a country in which she was a refugee, is a citizen, is a congresswoman and the way people just feel free to speak about her and question her allegiance to the United States and claim she must have allegiance to a foreign entity. Im interested to get your thoughts. We did speak about it before. Look what happened in the space of a week. Look what happened in the space of a few weeks. In West Virginia there was a poster in the State Capitol linking ilhan omar to 9 11. We got upset. Within a few weeks the president of the United States has now made tweets. Her life is at risk. Lets be clear here. Donald trump the president of the United States, the republican party, members of Congress Like dan crenshaw, Rupert Murdoch in the form of fox news and new york post, they have all put a target on her back wittingly or unwittingly, god forbid they will get her killed. There was a man arrested last week a trump supporter who said he would put a bullet in her skull. In february a man had a kill list. This is very real. Very real threat. He tweeted and we need to take it seriously. I have to deal with the substance. Donald trump and republicans are claiming ilhan omar trivialized 9 11. You know who did trivialize 9 11 donald trump to brag about the fact that his building was now the tallest building in lower manhattan. Donald trump said that israel is your country. When he said last weekend to a group of u. S. Jews that Benjamin Netanyahu is your prime minister. This is not just incitement. To violence or racism this is bad faith from the farright. To make sure no one on social media attempts to say what he just said was made up, i want to play the back up for what you just heard him talk about what donald trump has done. Lets play donald trump on 9 11. Okay. On 9 11. Remember the u. S. Was not attacked by american muslims, they were attacked by mainly saudis. Donald trump loves that country. Here he is on 9 11 doing an interview bragging about his buildings. You have one of the landmark buildings down in the financial district, 40 wall street. Did you ever damage or whats happened down there . It was an amazing phone call. 40 wall street actually was the second tallest building in Downtown Manhattan and it was actually before the World Trade Center was the tallest and then when they built the World Train Center became known as the second tallest and now the tallest. Theres more. Lets play the way donald trump has spoken about muslims, about this Broad Community over a billion people and generalized about them. Heres donald trump, a bit of a montage. The Muslim Community is not helping us. The Muslim Community is not reporting whats going on. Muslims have to work with us. They have to work with us. They know whats going on. We have to look at the muslims and we have to do something. We can stand by and be the stupid people while our country is destroyed. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States until our countrys representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. Im going to let all my panel say but i first want to get you to respond. When american muslims hear their president speaking that way, what is the response, what is the reaction, what is the level of fear that creates . Joy, its less than a month since 50 muslims were gunned down, miscancered by a White Nationalist in new zealand. Words matter. The constant demonization, delegitimatization, the constant obsession with muslims is leading to deaths, is leading to attacks, is leading to harassment. As i watched that i kept thinking in my head imagine if he said jews, jews. We would be rightly up in arms. This is crazy. This man is out of control. Yet he gets away with it year after year. Its getting worse. You have the most visible muslim woman in congress. Not just a muslim woman in congress. With the head scarf. This bothers a lot of people. He knows what he is doing when he attacks her in this outrageous way and it fills communities with fear. Its concerning to say the very least. My podcast i do, i worry about her. I do. Because the targeting for somebody who wears the hijab or the head scarf is more easy to do. I cant imagine how it feels inside the community to hear that. Women who wear the head scarf are visibly muslim and others who dont are not. We deal with this as a community how do you raise your children. It has forced muslims to reckon what it means to be a part of American Society and, in fact, has had muslims stand up for other peoples civil liberty rights. Many people unfortunately have been forced to be advocates when they prefer to live their daytoday lives. This is what it means to be muslim in america versus what donald trump identifies muslim. Hell make friendship with saudis and governments overseas that are killing muslims every single day in their own countries rather than embracing the fact that many people like myself are trying to advance American National security. This works, obviously, at some level among trumps base but i want to go to the broader issue of the other side, the Democratic Party. Because you had some criticism of the strength of the response on the democratic side in defense of this young woman who is very vulnerable. Shes a woman. Shes a member of congress. Shes very visible. Shes a target. Theres been some theres been a lot of tweets responding to this. You had mayor Pete Buttigieg talk about living overseas, risking his life, struggling against terrorism and talking about that. Saying the tweet made america smaller. You had Elizabeth Warren talking about inciting violence against a sitting congresswoman. Theres been some criticism that some of the responses by democrats have not been forceful enough. Aoc a fellow freshman member said members of congress have a duty to respond. Omars life is in danger. For my colleagues to be silent is to be complicit. Some responses havent even included her name. What do you make of this . Its not enough to criticize Donald Trumps mean tweets and bigoted tweets. We have to go back to the fundamental truth of the full context of the statement that she was making for which shes now being attacked. The point she was making is you have some folks who are muslim who do something and then everybody gets blamed. Thats a fundamentally important point that people need to be not only explaining and defending but admitting thats true. Imagine for a minute that a Congress Person had tried to make the very reasonable point that we ought not judge all christians by the fact that people who call themselves christians have bombed or burned 200 abortion clinics or Family Planning centers in the past 25 years in u. S. And canada combined or people who claim they are christian assassinated and murdered abortion providers and Family Planning doctors. If somebody made the point dont judge all of us by the acts of some and a democratic president tweeted out they are minimizing abortion killings we would be horrifying because it isnt right to judge an entire community by the acts of a handful. Were talking about 19 muslims who were involved in 9 11. Mostly saudis. There were. At that time 1. 5 billion muslims on planet earth. Walking, talking definition of sampling error. I expect the Democratic Party to stand up and not only condemn the president which is easy politics but to actually talk about the truth of what the representative was discussing. She was talking about the unjustifiable scapegoating of an entire group of people, 1. 5 billion strong across the planet. Thats unconscionable and anybody who wants to be president ought to talk about. Adding to that this works with a lot of donald trump basl weapon. What we need to be doing as well as the other panelists are saying which is stand up for ilhan omar. Stand up for muslims who are being targeted and discriminated against. The goal is inciting violence. Everything that ilhan omar was complaining about in that speech has borne out in reality. She said all muslims are being discriminated against because of a few. Then shes discriminated. She said muslims are being treated as a terrorist. She says now that shes in harms way and that is a prophecy we dont want fulfilled. Thats not something we want to have happen to prove muslims are in danger. Its the obligation of everyone in congress to stand up for her and the obligation of every american to stand up for her in this case, whether you like her or not because this is completely inappropriate. This is very dangerous and it needs to be stopped. Is there a way to work away from this kind of phobia, tim . I dont know what else to call it. Is that for me . Yeah. Im sorry. Okay. You know, i think it requires people of conscience and politicians of conscience and media tucking heads and pun departments to speak clearly and forcefully. The point about not agreeing with the representative to do that is an important one. You dont have to like her politics. You dont have to be a demonstrate or a liberal or progressive. You have to be somebody who believes in any kind of remotely democratic republic and a process whereby we can have rational conversations about Public Policy without blaming and scapegoating entire communities for the actions of a few. If you cant do that you have no right making policy in this country. You worked in the state department. Around the world weve been talking for years about incitement, about what it does. It doesnt just impact the communities here. It impacts muslim communities around the world. Our diplomats and military folks have a far better nuance to know what it means to be muslim in this world. They are on the front lines. Lets not forget that ilhan omar is not muslim. Shes a black woman. Shes a refugee. She represents all these marginalized communities in the United States and brings that to bear when shes forceful. Thats threatening to many people. Thats what we need to be reacting to as americans. Which overseas its not an issue. White nationalism and extremism donald talks about that. Which we now know is the greatest threat facing americans. Thats the challenge when people put 9 11 in their mouths. It ignores the threat were dealing which is rightwing terror. Thank you very much. Well have much more on this. Tune in tomorrow because one of the other congresswoman who has been relentlessly targeted by the right, Rashida Tlaib will be here tomorrow. Am i watching a comedy a drama on tv or is this really happening. The attorney general of the United States of america just basically uttered something more like a donald trump tweet than somebody who is is not Donald Trumps attorney general, its the attorney general of the United States. I sat down with senator cory booker at his home in newark, new jersey. The senator addressed the straight out of the blue claim by attorney general william barr that the Obama Administration spied on Donald Trumps president ial campaign. A favorite Conspiracy Theory of trump and his followers and fox news. Bloomberg reports that barr has already put together a team to look into the National Security officials who opened the Counter Intelligence investigation against trump. So just think about that for a moment. The people who acted to protect this country because they worried that an american president ial candidate who, in fact, became president of the United States might be compromised by a foreign power. Trump wants them investigated. Something even Jeff Sessions wouldnt do as attorney general. But attorney general william barr is perfectly willing to do it. To do the bidding of a president who routinely says things like this. The bottom line, the result is no collusion, no obstruction and thats the way it is. Its all a big scam, a big hoax. Its called politics but this is dirty politics and this is actually treason. Lets be clear. That is how autocrats talk not so much leaders of democracies. Recall Michael Cohen trumps former lawyer and country warned the country in sworn testimony that in his true trump is becoming an autocrat. Now its been 20 days since william barr released his four page book report on the Mueller Investigation and we have yet to see even a redacted verge of the nearly 400page report. Barr told congress on tuesday it will arrive within a week. Well see. Joining me now is information u. S. Attorney in alabama and professor at Alabama School of law. A law professor at duke and a information federal prosecutor. Joyce, were not supposed to be shocked any more. I dont know if we need to continue to be shocked to maintain our humanity. William barr seems to be reading from the script that Michael Cohen used to read from. The one person, lead aside donald trump for a minute, one person that Robert Mueller did not exonerate is vladimir putin. Right . We know russia tried to interfere with our elections. We now have an attorney general who is hyper focused on looking over the shoulder of maybe even investigating the people who are all the time trying to hold the russians at bay. Barr is in that job primarily for one reason to preserve the integrity and independence of the justice department. Hes not there to tow for the president , to carry the president s water. That looks like what hes doing. Last night the president used the spy language for fundraising, barr has not come 0and walked that back. So he now owns it. Walter, adams schiff the shareman of the House Intelligence Committee said of barr in politico, the postwatergate protection are being broken down. The president is on his way to have his own roy cohen. Roy cohen was the fixer willing to do anything for his clients and skirts legality. Thats what adam schiff lickens attorney general of the United States to. How far dr. Are we at a constitutional crisis if thats the case . Its a very distressing moment. Identify n ive not been more distressed in whats happening to our constitutional system and the spygate, which is a culmination of a series of truly inexplicable actions taken by bill barr. He advised me when i took over the office of Legal Counsel which he headed, i had a lot of respect for and actually thought rather good nominee of this administration for attorney general. But ive been dismayed by his actions. You know, joyce has put it very well. Look, heres what happened. The intelligence agencies had information that the russians were interfering massively with our president ial election. They followed the russians. The russians marched right into trump tower. Met f thats where the intelligence agencies followed them and reported on it. So im just dismayed at a series of steps that hes taken. Glenn, before i ask you, let me play william barr in this moment where he suddenly unleashed the spying meme that comes from trump and his friends. Heres william barr saying it. I think spying on a Political Campaign is a big deal, its a big deal. Youre not suggesting, though, that spying occurred. Well, i guess i think there was spying that did occur, yes. I think spying did occur. The correct was whether it was predicated, adequately pretty indicated. Im not suggesting it wasnt but i need to explore that. What would it mean for the National Security of this country if when National Security professionals see a foreign adversary attempting to infiltrate an american president ial campaign and then that person becomes president they get investigated forever having looked into that infiltration into the american system. They then become the targets. This does not sound like the way it works in democracies. No. It would probably look like the election looked like in 2016. We can expect to see it again in 2020 if for some reason there is something wrong or bad or nefarious about us investigating the circumstances that lead to a foreign power or a foreign country or foreign adversary interfering with our elections. William barr then said i have to see friday adequately predicated. If it, its not spying in the first place. Let me use a real world example of the reckless use of words by somebody like an attorney general. , if you know, i were to leave the studio and somebody were to try to rob me and they had a knife and attacked me and i had to defend myself by turning that knife on that person, the person got stabbed in the process and bled to death. You know, the attorney general might come out and say well glenn just committed a murder. No, what ive just described is selfdefense. So a murder would be the premeditated intentional killing of another person with no Legal Defense or justification. You know, the mischaracterization of a legal concept by the top Law Enforcement agent in the country has dramatic implications. You know, donald trump, hes built a wall but the wall is really between his base and the rest of the American People. And, you know, i think bill barrs choice to recklessly use the word spying has helped to cement that wall and hes not doing any good for himself or the country. Joyce, in countries like ukraine in the past, congo, democratic republic of the congo the person who ran against the leader wound up in jail. William barr has the power to investigate Hillary Clinton, donald trump has said lock her up. He wants to fulfill all his campaign promises. Locking up shack one of them. He said anybody who investigated his campaign committed treason. William barr could do all of that. Do you expect william barr to follow Donald Trumps edicts right down to whoever it is donald trump says is his enemy. We hope he wont. Barr has over time given us less and less reason to trust him. I think what we have to hope now is that the guardrails inside of the institution hold. We have this story that came to light over the last couple of days about trump trying to get the new acting head at dhs to violate the law. That story is your passed a. The institution at least for now has held. Doj is full of career professionals. Its hard to believe that those career professionals will stand by quietly and watch this hasnt Rod Rosenstein stood by quietly and let it happen . We dont know. I work with Rod Rosenstein. Ive known him for some years. I think that its possible that theres a variety of acceptable behavior in response to this very difficult situation. We wont really be able to assess in this realtime. At some point we have to look at it in hindsight. As long as we have people inside the department who are acting with integrity and transparency and not, for instance, opening an investigation because the president of the United States wants one, then we can have some confidence that the institutions may get stretched out of shape but they will hold. Its a thin hope. Joyce vance, thank you very much. Thank you all very much. Coming up wikileaks founder Julian Assange checks out of the embassy and checks into the gray bar hotel. Thats next. Get him back to the United States. Find out what he knows. He definitely is involved. Hes done a lot of harm to the United States of america. He should pay for that. I repeatedly condemned the guy. Hell be offered a fair trial. The wheels of justice are finally turning. Hes been involved effectively as an agent of the russian intelligence agencies and i think we have a vital interest in understanding his role in that process. Lawmakers from both of the two Major Political parties are making it clear they want Julian Assange sent to the u. S. To stand trial for his alleged part in the theft of government secrets a decade ago. Assange was arrested in london on thursday and indicted in the u. S. On hacking charges not related to the 2016 president ial election but rather based on the leaks of thousands of classified government documents that assange received from Army Intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning back in 2010. Could assanges extradition if it happens open the door to charges to wikileaks role on russias attack on the 2016 election. Joining me now is the author of the afact on democracy. And author of how to watch a russian spy. Let me start with the legal piece of it. Ecuador where Julian Assange had fl fled in 2010 he is den issued an arrest a warrant based on rape allegations. Then he took refuge in the ecuadorian embassy. May 2017 sweden dropped the rape investigation because they couldnt get him back in the country. The accuser this year has requested, this month that case be reopened and statute of limitations will expire next august. Initially going into the embassy to get him was based on ecuador saying the protection is dropped. They go in and get him for jumping bail on rape allegations. But then the u. S. Is able to indict him for the Chelsea Manning case. The u. S. Could indict him at any time. The issue is whether they could bring him to trial because he was in the ecuadorian embassy. The indictment itself, as we know, we had the Eastern District of virginia with the indictment with the disclosure that Julian Assange was being indicted in 2018. The question becomes how do you get him . The u. S. Has always wanted him. They always knew they wanted extradition. The issue always has been what your going to charge him with in order to accomplish the extradition, if you can get ahold of him. They cooperated in make these one, two, three in order. Absolutely. I think one of the things thats important to understand is part of the reason that ecuador finally said come get him because thats basically what happened. Were not protecting him any more. He started threatening the ecuadorian government which maybe was not the brightest thing to do. But hes a little bit of bullyish. From inside their protection. Not a wise move. Lets talk about the case for which the u. S. Would very much like to bring Julian Assange back to the u. S. It isnt the 2016 election. Its what happened in 2010. Explain. What happened in 2010 there was an Army Intelligence officer named Chelsea Manning and we the assistance of Julian Assange broke into or she now. Sorry. To a server and removed classified documents. Very broad based documents from the classified internet that the military operates. The basis of going after assange as i understand it is that many could not gain access to the actual files but could identify where the password was kept within the computer. Sent that folder to assange. Assange used a hackers tool to gain access to the pass wore which allowed manning to download that material. So no journalism here. What we have is an act of espionage being used, that person, Julian Assange as the tool to actually break into the classified u. S. Servers. But not indicted for espionage. Just to be clear thats not part of the indictment. To your point, the question is the degree to which Julian Assange and wikileaks in general have been engaging in espionage. He came off as a transparency guy. But his first acts in the world was he was a hacker. He was one of these people hacking for the truth, working with groups like anonymous and things like that. Hes being hoisted on his own. The proximity, if you want to claim that with wikileaks and russia has been the crux of a lot of peoples fixation thinking somehow this indictment could morph into further investigation or what happened in 2016 which, again, is not what the u. S. Has indicted him for. What is the relationship between wikileaks and russia, if any . It goes back to what malcolm just said and has been saying for quite some time. Wikileaks is not we as journalists you think of some level of analysis. Theres a fact and a joufrmist makes that analysis. Wikileaks has been nothing more than a clearinghouse for data and as malcolm has said over and over again in the case of 2016 it was laundering stolen data. I think what you see in terms of 2016, you go back to 2010, you look at Chelsea Manning and what wikileaks did with stolen u. S. Classified information. Did not provide analysis. Did not write stories on it. It was simply a Laundering Service a way to store internal classified information. Regardless how damaging that information was, it was not meant for public consumption. There was no analysis. It was pushed. If you look at 2016 you see a continuation of that concept. The way wikileaks becomes a clearinghouse for disinformation. We know Julian Assange is terrified of being extradited to the u. S. And the big question i have is we know that wikileaks was, in fact, receiving information that we, again, know came from the russians, the emails, the dnc hack, if you will. The question i have is how did they get to Julian Assange . How did that communication happen . Where did that actually happen . Look, it falls in line what we saw in 2010. We know wikileaks took stolen information from governments and post it in a damaging fashion in a way that caused disinformation, a way to try to topple government, to impact the internal machinations of that country. Thats what they did in 2016. Is there a history of wikileaks to do it to any other country. Did they do it to china or russia . No. He loves eastern dictatorships. He doesnt do this with russia. Nochbt material. When the Panama Papers came out which was enormous assets of russian oligarchs hiding their money wikileaks didnt release what they had in their possession. Wikileaks, though, in furtherance to what you were saying and i came on this channel and told the nation right then and there when we figured it out they are a laundromat for the stolen material. That material was crafted to do maximum damage against not just Hillary Clinton, the dnc, supported trumps releases, whenever trump would say something. There was a measure of coordination. He acted as a surrogate of the Trump Campaign and the russian intelligence to the point where trump praised him every minute. Very quickly before we go. You had the indictment of the 12 russian Intelligence Officers were indicted for hacking the dnc. On or about july 22, 2016, organization 1 sent a private message to guccife 2. 0 to find anything on Hillary Clinton because the Democratic National convenience was approaching. Organization 1 which is wikileaks explained we think trump only has a 25 chance of winning against hillary. Conflict between bernie and hillary is interesting which makes it sound that they had a goal in mind. Sounds like a conspiracy. Sounds like a conspiracy. This is the thing because october 7th, 2016 we know, thats when it starts to become clear publicly that there is maybe more coordination between wikileaks and russia. Thats why it will be interesting if theres a second bite at the apple with assange after this Chelsea Manning piece. Well see if he gets extradited. Coming up, more on inmate assange and in the next hour my oneonone with cory booker. H c. Means to fight the hardest battle, which any human being can fight and never stop. Does this sound dismal . The Tech Industry is supposed in invention and progress. But only 11 of its executives are women, and the quit rate is twice as high for them. Heres a hack make sure theres bandwidth for everyone. The more you know. The pres precedent that any journalist could be persecuted for publishing accurate information. Is assange a journalist . And could his indictment put news organizations and the First Amendment at risk. Glad to be with you. Lets start with the argument being made by supporters of Julian Assange including Tulsi Gabbard saying the message is being made that journalists show toe the line and be nice and behave. I think the congresswoman is correct that this is part of an effort by the u. S. Government to make sure the things they want to keep secret stay secret and i should have said by our government. This case is not black and white. I wish it was. Unfortunately all of the commentary is about black and white. He did not operate the way journalists do if the indictment is correct. He solicited and helped hack, possibly engages in espionage. Thats not what journalists do. If we conflate these ideas, then we end up boding real threats to journalists that operate within the law and are the recipients of leaked information. We need a law that provides a good faith exception for people who leak things like the video showing reuters journalists being shot in iraq. Its at the core of this case, but in the indictment, it isnt, there is nothing in this indictment that talks about him publishing that content. What this says here is that in march 8 of 2018, he agreed to assist manning in cracking a password stored on the United States department of Defense Computers connected to the secret internet protocol network. Have you ever attempted to hack into a computer or obtain a partial password and attempt to look at a system or computer. I once had a janitor tell me that he had all sorts of child pornography in his office but i wasnt going to go in the office with the janitor, that is breaking and entering to get that crime. There is a complete different between information that comes to you like Donald Trumps tax return that came to me in the mail unsolicited between interviewing people at great length and depth the way others do, and trying to help someone hack. What im worried about is that this will be con flated in the Popular Culture into being the same thing. And we want our government to be transparent. We want our government to not do things that are even and hide them for from. But on the other hand, its not journalism if youre hacking into something. Tim obrian wrote that to the extend that he coached or assisted him in the theft, that is bad. I may get in trouble for this, but journalists stop being journalists when they help to crack the joint. It is very different from just publishing the pentagon papers. No, but let me tell you what government would like to do. They would like to turn it into a wrongful act. And that is why this is such a hard and troubling case. And im generally with tim, and twhuns show is over there will be all sorts of twitter feeds about how im a terrible government monster here carrying the governments water, we need to have our government be accountable to us. We need fundamental reforms. Thank you so much for your time, appreciate it. Coming up is donald trump a threat to democracy . That answer and more after the break. I would not work so hard to replace him if i didnt think he was a threat to communities like mine. Now he is threatening to break the law at the border that have done things that are a threat to our morals like putting kids in cages and separating families. Senator corey booker sat down with me to explain why he wants to make donald trump a oneterm president. First in the last 24 hours, donald trump has escalated his desire to governor as a autocrat. He is now strongly considering sending migrants to sanctuary cities as a punishment for those cities. The white house has twice proposed such a plan in the last six months and despite telling an official that the plan was ultimately scrapped. It was determined to be so illegal. Just this tuesday top advisors met the white house to decide if they could build and run migrant detention camps or camp cities, and they told the now acting dhs secretary of hold of Border Control last week that he would pardon him if he illegally stopped Asylum Seekers from crossing the border. Joining me now, manny hasan, time wise, and democratic pollster fernan. Let me play you donald trump on friday at the white house with his ingenious plan. California is certainly always saying we want more people and they want more people in their sanctuary cities, we can give them about up limited supply, lets see if theyre so happy. They say we have open arms, theyre always saying they have open arms, lets see if they have open arms. We could change the laws very quickly, very easily. Could he just dump migrants in cities that he wants to punish p the acting ice director replied with an email to the white house that the plan would create an unnecessary operational burden. That is legality, saying not sure how paying to transport aliens to another location to release them when they could be released on the spot people worry about the exspendture and the liemt. It should come as no surprise that a president of the United States that would so mehesitate for a second to separate chairman from their parents. We crossed a at least hothresho week. This is the week that the Donald Trump Administration ceased to be an administration and became an autocracy. They see themselves as above the rule of law as an autocracy. And you know what will not stop this . You know what will not pause or give this regime any moments of hesitation . A toughly worded letter by any democrats in congress. Words in a press conference will not stop them. They respond to the use of power. And unless the democrats in Congress Respond to the power that was given to them, in a historic midterm mandate by the American People, this trump regime is going to run over the American People much quicker than even any of us have feared, joy. Im going to go to you on that. That is what you have been talking about, that even Michael Cohen acknowledged in donald trump and he feels unleashed, and not restrained to follow the law. He feels like he can take human beings and just dump there somewhere on the street, and here he is talking about using the american military. Our military, they cant act like a military would act. Because they get a little rough, everybody would go crazy. So our military cant act like they would normally act. Say like another military from another country would act. How our military would normally act, but what does that that sounds threatening, cz sarah. It is a threat and a continuation and everything he has been doing since he is came into office. It is where trump has installed his family into office. He wants to enhance his wealth, and now we have the open embrace of using the military potentially against american citizens. We need to remember that were under a Fake National Emergency and this Fake National Emergency is only the second National Emergency in u. S. History to allow the president to employ the use of troops. The other one was 9 11 which we know he is so deeply concerned ant. Why did he make this National Emergency. Kwl why did he make this new rule, and who will check that power, because has fernan said, others are not checking his abuse of power. It is going to go on with incredible consequences, with incredible casualties unless people step up. Many ask the question, do you see anyone on the horizon that is willing to take the strong action to check this president . He doesnt seem to want to follow the law. No, it is very sad, what is happening has been happening in front of our eyes. This is not a credit. Trump morphing in front of us. Were seeing him tell the bo customs and Border Protection to break the law and i will pardon o you. It is the same as what he said on the campaign trail. If you punch a protestor i will pay your legal fees if is the same incitement of violence. He envies the chinese president because they dont have term limits. His people are standing up, i wish my people would as well. He said it on fox news, this is a very deliberate strategy. They are going after all of the power and influence. He goes on through the media saying hearing enmys of the media. If you dont stand and applaud in the state of the union, it is treason. It delegitimatizes any opponen s opponents. You know what, tim, this obviously resonates with a certain percentage of the public. Some viewers want to understand why. Do you have an explanation why there is a tolerance among elected republicaned and a passtive passivity to it, and why so many people you have had want this leadership in america. The kind of authoritarianism that focuses on bround skin folk, on muslim folk, it is effected because the oldest play in the american political play book is to have rich white men telling not rich white people. We think about the opioid crisis, fentanyl, ox y yoxycont. He says to white people theyre the source of the pain. Who is to blame for it. Donald trump wont do anything about it. The politics works, it worked for hundreds of years, unless they have an end, it will continue because it worked for a long time. Yeah, i come back to you, you worked as a strategist. The democrats are the party of the polyglot, right . The multiracial coalition, of everyone else, right . The nonwhite conservatives, what are they doing wrong . Unfortunately i think it comes down to they have never had to experience this this before. It they are acting like the political process will save them from donald trump. Autocrats respond to power. They need to start leading with power which is why despite the tremendous admiration i have for nancy pelosi, i could not believe her comment that the person most deserving of impeachment in the United States of donald trump is not worth impeachment. They need to begin proceedings immediately. It is not about 67 votes in the United States senate, it is for the American People. It is to let the American People determine judgment through their elected representatives. Everybody is saying we need to be patient. Were two years into a president that should have been taken out years ago. Im going to leave it on that note. Fernan, thank you so much, appreciate you. The president , when he was a candidate, was welcoming wikileaks and the information they got for Hillary Clinton, has that changed . I think the president and as you in the media do, you always welcome information, but that was in no way an endorsement. That is how authoritarian governments work, right . I think americans are not accustomed to this style of governance, we have hood good president s and bad president s, and they dont always release their tax chureturns and things right . In other countries this kind of governance is the norm. What mike pence just did, just pretending when donald trump said he loves wikileaks, he never said that. You have hogan gibley say on thursday that the idea of hauling of migrants, of that idea on thursday night, he said this was just a suggestion that was floated and rejected that ended any further discussion. By the next morning after trump confirmed it by a tweet, he said they have confirmed it. They should be working with the administration to find the best way to transport these illegal alie aliens. He just reversed himself like everything is completely normal. Yeah, it changes from day today, it is not a it is not an accident or a side effect. It is the point of the administration. No one calls you out on the lie and everyone follows you as you reverse yourself in front of their very eyes. Donald trump said openly, do not believe what youre seeing and hearing in the news, dont believe your own lying eyes. We all heard and saw him refer to wikileaks towards five times a day at the end of the day. And we in the media, that doesnt mean we should not call it out, that is my biggest things. I wish more reporters would say this is a lie, here is when you said it. One of the most fascinating examples of how it has morphed, do you remember when mike pence lead all of the cabinet officials in this hour long thing where they said it is amazing to serve with you, mr. President , we love to be at this table and breathe the same air with you. It is bizarre, lets talk about Steven Miller, he is the architect, he has been called the rabbi. Here is the Washington Post on his role saying senior trump advisor Steven Miller said he discussed the process about this dumping of migrants. It was basically an idea that miller wanted that no one else wanted to carry out. Steven miller called people at ice and said if theyre going to cut funding, theyre going to release people in pelosis district, what is going on there . Why arent democrats hauling in before congress to testify . Well they should, but here is the interesting thing, for donald trump, someone that wants to be an autocrat so much. He is being set bay professional troll, Steven Miller, who if he was not in the white house, he would be in roy cohen the musical. His family cant stand him and in third grade he used to sit around eating glue, that is who is making immigration policy. And someone that would listen to a fool like this tells a lot about the company he keeps, someone his entire life has only wanted to do one thing which is contr control. And i think it is time for congress to haul him in front of a committee and ask him are you the one and why are you the one encouraging the president to do things you know is in violation of the law and freeze his salary until they get the answers they want. They should do that and put an end to the reign of Steven Miller. And sarah you know, this is your area of expertise. T the idea of hiring sick fanks, its that house so it works out. It is usually around one person and his family, as time goes on that circle getting smaller. They get concerns with the financial flow of money, but were also looking at a distinctly american form. One day everything is normal, and the next day there are troops on the ground and people will recognize the changing, the changes are incremental. It is the criminal impunity flaunted regularly. And barriers being broken down until you look back and you realize that you dont recognize your country any more and that is why it was so essential that we stop this early. I was begging people to see what is coming, now fwhooer a position where the institutions that could stop this are greatly weakened. We have people like miller elevated to this level of power doing unspeakable acts, kidnapping children who are then sexually assaulted, all of these things should be looked at by congress. They should be moving to impeach. The point of that is not necessarily to get trump out, he might not leave even if the senate can fix. He has to bring more evidence to the American Public to make people see these individual acts of cruelty, to see the connections between them, the cumulative effect. And im going to have you end on this. Kellyanne conway and sarah sanders, youre going to be on the sunday morning shows tomorrow, what would you ask them if they were in front of you tomorrow . I would be well, where to begin. I wouldment to talk about the autocracy. It has to be the number one issue, but with people like that who lie for a living, i would just go down the wikileaks road and play the tape again and again. The lies are on tape, donald trump is a want to be autocracy. He is also leading a government by the worst people, and that is important to remember. Thank you very much again there. Tim wise, thank all three of you very much. Coming up, corey booker explains why he is running for president and how he would beat trump. How. You might take something for your heart. Or joints. Donald trumps ban on transgender people going into the military has gone into effect. The pentagon claims it is not a ban. Members must serve as theyre birth sex or not at all. They there is no evidence that it harms the military in either way. In 2017, donald trump said this is not the end, several lawsuiting challen lawsuiting lawsuits challenging the ban have been filed. Together america we will rise. Im corey booker, and i want to be president of the United States of america. Coreybooker is kicking off his president ial campaign with a reallyfully new jersey. Senator corey booker, thank you for having us. We invaded your man cave. It is interesting to come through and see where you live, it gives you more knowledge about you to be here, but i want to start off, well get to that and talk about the news of the day. Donald trump tweeted a confirmation that the trump had min trags is considering as a way of stopping unlawful migration shipping migrants to sanctuary cities in blue states as a punishment for those cities. As a United States senator, what is your comment on that . It reflects on contorted view that he has about humanity and that people seeks a better live are a punishment to communities. But more than that this is what we have seen and what we will continue to see in the next few years. Hymn trying to dominate headlines and conversations distracting us from the things he is doing. Having policies like banning muslims or throwing kids in cages. I think this is really problematic. We have a president that will continue to say outrageous things to distract us from our ability to come together as a country and begin to solve real problems that americans are feeling regardless of your political aisle. Things about our economy and Health Care System that dont work. Ly i will do everything that i can do in the next year or to to come away and solve rather than his outrage of the day or hour. Youre in a powerful position, but cant the democrats do something about it . Isnt there anything that the democrats can do about things like this . Donald trumps immigration policies that are crucial, putting kids in cages, cant they do anything about it . Right now we have control of the house of representatives that gives us a tremendous ability to hold this administration accountable. I have found there is more power in the minority and you can create levels of accountability. Often the opposite of justice is injustice. And we have seen it with the health care debate, and we have seen it by calling immigration policies, and bringing attention to these issues and help to stop him from achieving what, from me, seems to be insidious ends. Lets talk about in terms of safety as a country we found out that cyberw warfare is real. It is now said this it is the at behest of the United States that the charges against him have to do with the Chelsea Manning situation. With the unlawful acquisiticquif tapes, video, and documents belonging to the United States government. Do you believe that he will be tried in an American Court . I dont know, this is a Legal Process that will be ongoing for some time, but i think the preamble is very important. Were understand attack. It has not been new and it is ongoing as we speak, there are folks out there from russia, from south korea, from china that have an inattention to try to pit us against each other, to try to undermine our democratic processes, and make us question the truth and facts. This is where were having our new democracy right now under this context. And to have a president that doesnt even recognize the threat, doesnt even want to admit that there was that kind of interference in the elections of the past, that means he is part of the problem in making us less safe. If there is one thing we should all join together on it is that were being attacked. Someone is trying to attack the electoral process and we should Work Together to try to stop it. Stipulating that the assange charges have nothing to do with the 2016 election, theyre not about wikileaks dissemination. But were having a debate online of whether or not Julian Assange is a journalist. People are concerned that prosecuting him will open the door to violation of the First Amendment against journalists. We have seen the balance between the right to a free press, the rights to progress, with the rights to privacy and more. Im looking forward to learning more about these particular charges that i think are coming out as we have seen in the last few days as we make a conclusion. But he goes back quite a ways. Do you think that joule yjanuar assange himself is a jourm inal . I have a lot of suspicions of this individual. You have donald trump communicating in his press conferences. I hope that somebody can get this information. I hope somebody will get these hacked emails, and wikileaks played a role me in that. He is a force of First Amendment rights in the world. I believe there was insidious things going on there. We have yet to see the Mueller Report to know evidence they pulled up, but i have a lot of frustrations with what i see as an attempt to under mine american elections by foreign powers and individuals. Do you think he should be charges in relation to the election . There is a problem when you have politicians spouting off about whether or not people should be arrested or not. There is a judicial process that should be fair that should be making these decisions, im tired of hearing politicians saying things like so and so should be locked up. We should evaluate these things on their merit. I know my role is to make our system fairer. We have a system that you and i both know is profoundly unfair and biassed. Racially biassed. This is what i see for my role, im im not going to play the role of a judge or a prosecutor. Im a United States senator and a citizen of this country. We need to make our system more fair. I want to stay just for one moment in your role as a member of the Senate Judiciary committee. The current attorney general that works for a president who explicitly said that his opponent in the election should be locked up. He said that in front of rallies, and who has been pushing a Conspiracy Theory that the real investigation that should be happening is against the Obama Administration. Now you have the attorney general of the United States admitting he had no evidence of spying. What do you think of lm barr . Is he acting in his role that is above board . Youre in my living room, there are moments on this couch watching that tv over there that i have had what the moment thats you snap up and you say did that human being really just utter that . Am i watching a comedy or a drama on tv . Is that happying . The attorney general of the United States of america utter the something that sounded like a donald trump tweet. It shows their independence from a president because they are the highest Law Enforcement officer in the land. So when he said that it was for public highway say what moment. He was acting as a political force, doing the bidding of a president who is trying to delegitimatize the Mueller Report, peoples confidence in the elections, and really play him as the role of a victim as opposed to what i see him as. Somebody that was doing things that fundamentally maybe not violated the law, but our common values. You took the step to testify against Jeff Sessions, and taking a very firm stand saying you did not believe he should have that job. You voted against william barr to have the job of attorney general. Do you trust william barr to release the Mueller Report in a way that tells us what is really in it . Those comments we were referring to was a betrayal of trust. He proved he delegitimatized his voice and his decision and i think he is expect. I really do believe he is suspect. I think it is our responsibility, democrats and republicans, and we have a pretty good chor rouse on bous s of aisle, someone that is a political appointee. We flow is a sanction. It provide thats any executive Branch Member can be impeached for misconduct. Do you believe that william barr, if he does not release the Mueller Report, if he does not tell the American People what is in it fully that he should face impeachment . I think we should ensure that it is done. Do you think that means subpoenas . Im going to wait . Im going to continue to press for transparency. You remember the star report, bill clinton was literally the next day it was in nuewspapers around the country. Were seeing things that should be rising to the concern of every american, but i know if it does not happen we will see what duo next. Okay, lets talk 2020, youre home because of your run for president , there is about 47 people running, closer to 17, there is six senators running, why are you running . Im running for president because i felt the same sense of urgency that made me run for city county till. People are pooep being left out, left aside, and im running to deal with the issues and the Unfinished Business of this country because i live with urgency like people in my neighborhood, and im running baugz i believe that i bring unique experiences to this race. And youre friends with a lot of people running. There is lots of selfies youre all taking. The senators are all quite close. I know a lot of the other folks that are, hickenlooper and i were mayors at the same time. So not only are you friendly with one another, but a lot of your positions are pretty much the same, youre very similar, do you ever have that conversation between you that maybe we should consolidate this race early, back one or two strong candidates and just focus on beating donald trump . I think this process will bring us the healthest candidates. I dont think we fight fire with fire. I think the best way to win is not by fighting donald trump on his turf in the gutter. I think we need to talk about a revival of grace, common values, patriotism, love of country, you cant love your country if you dont love your fellow country men and women. Other people think we need to punch him in the face and when they go low they go lower. I think there is a lot of different themes. I think as a chief of a city, getting things done, working to transform this city to one of the best success stories, getting to washington dc, we passed major pieces of legislation with urgent matters, criminal justice reform, my unique resume of getting things done in washington, being a chief executive, and the message they think is not just a feel good message, but the only mess an that in my opinion can win an election. You do not fight trump on his turf. We dont show our worst, we show the best of who we are. We should all make a commitment to line up who wins the nomination, i feel these are the value thats have helped me make change. Real substantive measurable change in communities like this and i think we need to more than ever right now find ways to come together to deal with persistent injustice. And you mentioned grace, and i think your message, you stay is not just a feel good message but a values election. That sounds like it might make sense, but as you know when you talk to rank and file democrats, theyre scared. A lot of democrats are saying we need to fight. Why do they have can that win a primary . First of all, why isnt love one of the toughest most fearsome forces we have ever seen . Why do you to be mean to be strong or cruel to be tough . But youre fighting a president that is a famous line that cruelty is the point, right . Were going to cage children, separating families again, being forced to end that policy, and crewel t cruelty is the message on the other side. But they didnt win by bringing bigger dogs and more powerful hoses, they bet it by changing the moral imagination of a country. They rose the conversation and they trans they beat, segregation would fall weeks later, were at a cross roads in our country that we have seen hatred deepen. Were getting huge crowds coming out, and people are coming up saying i wanted you to punch donald trump in the face, and i say twhael e is a felony, listen to my message and come up to me afterwards, sign a caucus card for me. They understand youre right the antedote for this hatred is not more cruelness, its love. The antedote to darkness is light. Were going to show the best of who we are at a time when our kou country is yearning for more grace. We want to heal wounds. The at the end of the day, the problems in my neighborhood were going on before donald trump was there. Lead in water, broken criminal justice systems. My neighborhoods work fulltime jobs and they still need food stamps. Those problems will take more than just removing trump from office. Theyre going to take us calling this country back together again with a sense of moral urgency like what we have seen in the civil rights movement. Like in the suffrage improvement that woke folks up to the urgencies, like in the workers rights movement, like the factory fires, and tragedies that inspire this country to create workers rights. We are now were racking up monumental amounts of debt, what do we have to show for it, our infrastructure is crumbling, we have schools under funded, small islands of towering debt, were doing this wrong, and we need to change, the solution is not just about one guy and one office, it is awaking a sense of moral urgency to say who we say we are again. People say question do it by pulling off of the gloves and fighting in the gutter. Donald trump will be tough. There is a movie about my rising to power here called street fight. If anyone and woders if im a fighter, go watch that oscarnominated movie. But i didnt get into fight using tactics. You only use the tactics youre against. The tactics you deplore, you use those very same tactics to win, thats not the history of our country. Justice for all that is the name of the tour youre launching tomorrow. Im a past nomination kind of person. I need the math. So you have to deal with nevada, new hampshire, South Carolina and super tuesday literally a week later, california, texas. Huge states in there. Justice for all tour, a, what does it mean . And b, whats your path to the nomination . Youre in sixth, seventh place. Your fundraising is in the middle. How do you overtake a joe biden, Kamala Harris . You and i both understand the people usually leading in the early days are not actually at the end. Im so comfortable what were achieving now, where were at. For design for me, retail states are about retail politics. You have to win black women in South Carolina. Whats your pitch to black women . My pitch is looking at my legislation, closing the mortality gap between black women when i was running for president , i put it in a while back. Look when i got to the United States senate i stood up and said wait main, there are no black women and people getting represented in the rooms when it happens. I went to Chuck Schumer and said you have to get Democratic Senators to release data of diversity on their staffs. More africanamerican women have been hired in the senate. My career, only person running for office before they were a senator, they ran a majority africanamerican city, when it comes to issues facing black and brown people, i have been spending pretty much most of my career working on those issues. In a retail fight im a mayor who beat a machine, a retail beat the machine. We beat the machine and ultimately won a record in the city because im good at retail politics. In the early states, that will make a difference, going directly to the people. In the middle america, rural areas, we have a lot of common pain but we lost our sense of purpose. This idea of justice for all, opportunity for all. The themes were hitting speak as much to people in des moines where my grandmother was born and raised as they do to the people in South Carolina and new hampshire. Yeah, i have time for one more question, and the timekeeper is telling me. You have this history, i have your bio in front of me that makes me feel inadequate. You have yale. You were varsity football player, stanford, road scholar. You have a lot in this bio thats very impressive. But for the average person, they think this guy doesnt have flaws. Does this guy have flaws like me . Hes rescuing guys out of burning buildings. Give me the biggest mistake of your life, biggest mistake you made as mayor. God, when youre fighting every day like this and put your heart out, you stumble and fall. Right up the street there were projects and these kids hung out in the lobby. They were amazing. When i went in there and started smelling marijuana, i said i have to convene on these kids. They dont have the margins to experiment with marijuana like white kids or even black kids in college. So then i got busy running for mayor. One of these kids was just like my dad, single mom, below the poverty line in the segregated community. Like so many of our kids today. I run for mayor and get too busy to follow through mentoring the things i was supposed to do. One of the first murders i showed up to as america of the city, the body on the ground was hasan from my building. And i still remember going to his funeral like so many of american. Remember, black men are 6 of the nations population, majority homicide victims. There i go to a crowded furn earl home for the american tradition of the boy in a box. But i felt shame. God literally put my dad, same wit, same potential right in front of me and when my dads family and cot take care of him, the community took care of him. They brought him in as their own son, the church wrapped around him and got him money to go to college. Here was my own father and i got too busy. I will never forget as we were packed in that un earl home, i was so ashamed. I ran to my office as newly elected mayor and wept. I thought if all of us were there for his funeral, why werent we there for his life . Im running for the highest office in the land but i still live in this neighborhood. I owe them a debt. They put me in politics. I still take kids to movies, i mentor a number of kids. No matter how busy i get, even the president ial campaign, i still know in life the biggest thing you can do on any day would be a small act of kindness, decency and love to others.
