Others avert their eyes after his latest round of controversial comments. I will talk to j. D. Shultz, who is challenging him for his congressional seat. First, at the end of last weeks show, the washington posts Philip Rucker made this prediction. Phil, what are you watching this week . The president is at bedminster, new jersey, all week. This is his summer vacation. When hes on vacation there he golfs, eats and watches a lot of television and unstructured time, which means controversies could emerge. Never doubt phil rucker. He was not wrong. President promoting baseless conspiracy theories. You think the clintons are involved in Jeffrey Epsteins death . I have no idea. I know he was on the plane 27 times. As the market was dropping, trump was on social media slamming the guy he appointed add Federal Reserve chairman. The rally in chmanchester apparently frustrated trump started throwing insults. That guy has a serious weight problem. Go home and exercise. The dueling protests taking place. President said he will be watching the scene and, quote, major considerations being given to name antifa an organization of terror. And if those stories werent enough, trump signaled interest in purchasing greenland. Really. Really. And today on his way back to the white house, the president was in a talkative mood, answering reporters questions for more than half an hour. He confirmed those reports about looking into purchasing greenland. He complained about fox news. He repeated his concerns about voter fraud and weighed in on the state of the economy with fears mounting over a possible recession. I dont see a recession. The world is in a recession right now. And although thats too big a statement but if you look at china, chinas doing very, very poorly. Theyre losing millions and millions of jobs in china and were not paying for the tariffs. China is paying for the tariffs for the 100th time. In the case of china, china is eating the tariffs. At least so far. And with that, i would like to welcome in my panel with me here on set, senior White House Reporter forenbc news digital shannon pettypiece. Washington bureau chief for usa today suze anticipate pasean p brendan buck. Joining us from ft. Worth, texas, democratic congressman mark veazey. Thank you very much for being here tonight. Susan, let me start with you for the big picture of what we ran through for the course of this week. It really does seem as though the economy is the one thing that has kept this president afloat. Its the one thing where his Approval Ratings are actually higher than 50 . Everything else, you know, our polling has shown it to be lower. It seemed as though he wanted to talk about a whole wide variety of things and todays been fullcourt press to convince everybody this recession isnt happening . Right. To say dont be afraid of optimism, which is what larry kudlow said over and over again on meet the press this morning. The trouble is, i dont think larry kudlow saying we should be optimistic drives the markets who are very nervous about whats happening with the trade war with china. You can see why the president would be so concerned about this because the economy is the economy is the number one thing that says he will be reelected. President s who preside over robust economies get reelected in modern times. President s who are presiding over recessions often do not get reelected. So you can see why of all of that string of bizarre and interesting news that you ran through, the 800point drop in the stock market was the single most important one. And this is really how the president understands the economy is through whats happening on the dow, and clearly hes trying to convince people that what theyre seeing is not the case, which is a common theme for him. Right. And at a rally this week, he said, well, you have no choice put to vote for me because if you dont vote for me, the stock markets going to tank, your 401 k will go down the tube because the democrats are socialists and they will destroy all of this economic momentum we have. One, that really is an argument only plays with people over 50 who care about their 401 k s at this point. Doesnt play to millennial or genx voters. And secondly if they have gone down when election day comes, that just kicks the legs out from really one of the last arguments he has. Theres a sense this election will come down to a decision between money or morals. You can vote for the president and your money will be good. He will give you a job, your 401 k , your stock market will look good and you will use that to overlook some of these moral character issues he has. Thats what theyre banking on. If he doesnt have the money piece of that, then that whole argument falls apart. Speaking of this, for a president who has tied so much of his political fortune to the economy, its safe to say this week was a real gut check. The dow rallies thursday and friday but wednesdays 800point plunge was the biggest single day drop of the year and as concerns mount about a possible recession, the president and his advisers are reportedly worried about what an economic downturn could mean for his chances in 2020. A source close to the president put it bluntly to axios, quote, im very worried about the latest economic data. A lot of us are concerned without the narrative on the economy, he cant win. And shannon just mentioned, of course, that narrative was on full display at a rally thursday night in New Hampshire. See, the bottom line is i know you like me and this room is a love fest, i know that, but you have no choice to vote for me because your 401 k s down the tubes, everything will be down the tubes. Whether you love me or hate me, you got to vote for me. Brendan, how much does this matter to Republican Voters who seem to be supporting the president through thick and thin . I dont think for Republican Voters it doesnt matter a lot but the president has to realize he cant just win with his own base. I think we saw that in 2016 where we lost with educated voters and women voters and the economy is one place he can make up ground. I find it ironic hes now hyping the economy when weve been looking for him to do that two years. You have been trying to talk him into doing it. And now he feels its important. I think its important to say we have seen a few large drops in the stock market this year and we have had these conversations, is i recession coming . And weve always had the rebound. I think its important to say its not necessary certainly were in trouble but at some point you can only sabotage the economy so much. I think thats what hes doing with this trade war and its not just the broad he economy that is a problem for him, its in the states that matter the most. Its the midwest states that were so important to winning, there are a lot of farmers hurting as a direct result of the tariff. So its not just the broader economy its the midwest result best states that are most important to him. Congressman, let me ask youre in the suburbs in the dallasft. Worth area. Your district is a blue one but there are areas throughout the state where were seeing swing districts that didnt used to be swing districts and some of these phenomenon around voters switching teams have played out in the trump era. How do you see this Economic News playing out with your swech constituents on the ground in your district. Yes, no, absolutely. Let me say this, President Trump inherited these numbers from president obama. Everyones saying President Trumps economy but there were good numbers that came with him when he entered the white house in 2017. With that, yes, absolutely voters in the suburbs here in dallasft. Worth are very concerned. They stop me all the time when im out and about asking me whats going to change . Is the president going to finally stop acting like hes crazy all the time . They really do want to see a return to normalcy. What im sensing from them is that theyre not looking for anything extravagant or radical to happen. They just really want to get back to a place in time where they think the white house is a place of honor and respect and, again, just normalcy. Thats what i am hearing over and over again. Susan paige, on what this congressman what the congressman was just talking about there, this really does, to brendans point, seem to the critical constituency heading into 2020. That, of course, plus result belt voters. It was interesting, a fox news polls this week showed just what the congressman was saying, about 21 voters were looking for a return to normalcy, not lets break new ground and seek fundamental change. Thats different. Voters often want big change. Theres a sense i think with at least some of the electorate theres an exhaustion setting in on all of the drama we see day in and day out with this white house and administration. And thats a force that helps a candidate like joe biden, who would represent kind of a return to normalcy but not a chance for not an opportunity for big change. It was interesting the president today went after even fox news, which has been such a champion of his for the last three years and basically said fox news is different. He didnt call it fake news but he seemed to be going in that direction. If the president thinks fox news is fake news, that is news unfavorable to him, that also reflects something significant that i think is happening. I think this return to normalcy, it will be interesting to see how that ends up polling. I think that is a very important question. When i talked to the democratic voters who switched over to trump in 2016, one of the things they said is listen, the whole drain the swamp, the system isnt working for me. This question of do you want to go back to the Barack Obama Administration . I know there were a many people who were happy in the Barack Obama Administration but many people felt left out, like it wasnt working for them. Do they want to go back to a system they felt left behind or are they willing to double down and continue down this road on hopes thats their only chance of getting out of a broken system. I do see a difference in return to normalcy and return to the obama administration. I dont think theyre necessarily the same thing. The norms we have seen broken under pret are in many ways completely unrelated to the policy of any particular republican or democrat. Sure, its not just going back to the way it was and pretending like this never happened, its making all of this stress everybody feels in their life and the craziness as the congressman said and go away like Michael Bennet tweeted, i promise you wont have to think when me, but i will keep an eye on north korea and you can go and live your lives. Thats appealing to a lot of people. Politics is so consuming and so vitriolic these days and some people are just turned off and propelled by the persona that existed and thats powerful. That is, susan, how this president won the election in the first place, the Reality Tv Show youp cot lo couldnt look from. Are people really tired of that . Do they want someone boring . If youre boring, you cant get people to vote for you, can you . Theyre tuning in to him. Theyre defineding the agenda day in and day out. Hes been very successful in changing the conversation to something just with a productive tweet. So people do tune in. Weve seen that with the number of people on their website and number of people who tune in to your show. But theres also i think some discomfort with the tone of our politics, the quality of our conversations. When the president encouraged an ally, close ally of ours to bar two members of congress from entering their country, two members of the squad from going to israel, i think that took people aback. We talked about this economic story as being the most important story, i think talking about breaking norms, that was the example the past week, it represented the biggest norm breaking by this president. Congressman, quickly before we go to break, let me get you to weigh in on that. Whats the conversation been like for the Democratic Caucus . I realize you guys have been scattered because its recess but around these two congress the statement nancy pelosi put out on that topic stuck out to me because shes essentially saying hey, we have to rise above this and make this relationship stronger than it is through this president while obviously expressing real concerns about what the administration did here. No, every member i talked to in the Democratic Caucus that i communicated with very, very upset at two members of congress being barred. Not only that most of the pro israel groups that come to washington, d. C. , they work overtime to make sure israel does not become a partisan topic. And the fact President Trump and Bibi Netanyahu put israel in the middle of a partisan political fight, a lot of people were just really upset with that, disgusted with it and as far as middle east policy is concerned, aa lot of people think it sets a very bad precedent. Were just Getting Started here tonight. Still to come, is the president losing his appetite for greater background checks, and with it cooling hopes for gun law reforms . Plus, new data indicates this was the hottest july ever recorded. Governor jay inslee of Washington State staked his campaign on saving the planet and will join me live as well. Only imagine. According to the latest fox polls, shes down 11 points behind joe biden and she was down 21 a month ago and the president seems to have noticed. We have pocahontas rising. I did the pocahontas thing i hit her really hard, and it looked like she was down and out. But that was too long ago. I should have waited. But dont worry, we will revive it. It can be revived. Lets vote for Elizabeth Warren pocahontas warren. We have the best numbers weve ever had. Lets vote for somebody else. I dont hi thats going to happen, folks. I dont think thats going to happen. Joining in he now democratic congresswoman deb holland of new mexico. Shes partnering with senator warren on comprehensive legislation aimed at helping native americans. And she is also a member of her states tribe be and one of the first americannative americans elected to congress. Thank you for being here. Thank you for having me. Let me start with the president reviving the pocahontas line against Elizabeth Warren. Sure, well, of course, as i have said, he is failing. Hes behind in so many states right now so, of course, hes lashing out. Thats the only thing he knows how to do. He and does the necessarily have any intelligent words to, you know, object to what the senator is doing, the success shes having on the campaign trail, the amazing way that shes able to convey her campaign message, which is why shes rising in the polls. So he lashes out in this way, and its what i expect from a racist president. You are partnering with Elizabeth Warren on this plan to address native american concerns. What do you see in her plan that has led you to endorse her, especially considering the controversy that unfolded when she got into the race around the dna test and her own heritage. Sure. Well, in legislation the promise to native nations act, its a comprehensive act, it is addressing the issues from the United States commission on civil rights broken promises report. So what that report found was that native nations have been underfunded for decades and decades, which leads the United States to not keep its promises, its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes. So this legislation seeks to remedy all of that. And its very exciting. Its never been done before. Its important to ensure that our indigenous communities across this country can live up or that the United States can live up to the promises that it made to Indian Country, and in exchange really for all of the land that has made our country the United States of america. Are you prepared in the event that Elizabeth Warren is the democratic promny to have native communities in the spotlight day in and day out as the president makes this kind of attack against her . So, you know, this is the president thats the way he wants to address it. Senator warren is going to rise above all of that. She has a plan for this country. She has a plan for Indian Country. Thats what she will talk about ant campaign trail, what she plans to move working families forward, to help everybody in this country to find success for themselves, for their children, in education, health care, infrastructure, all of those things that are so important to us, while the president is making racist comments about Indian Tribes and about her. She has a plan and thats what she will be talking about. Im an organizer, i have been organizing in Indian Country for a very long time. Im going to make sure that folks get out to vote because thats really how we will defeat this president is at the polls. Do you personally have any concerns about how she handled the discussion around her heritage and the dna test she had done . You know, what i believe is that for centuries native americans have been kidnapped, shipped off, sent to boarding school, you know, adopted out of their families as infants without a say from their communi communities at all. Thats how many families were separated, so many were separated centuries and centuries ago. And many times over a lifetime, they never found each other. I think its a sad history repeating itself right now on our southern border by family separation there. No the less, Elizabeth Warren has risen above all of that. Shes been fighting for working families longer than shes been a u. S. Senator and thats what she will continue to do, to make sure people find success in this economy that is rigged towards the top 1 , and i have no doubt that that is what she will keep as her mission, thats what she will talk about and the messaging she will get out to the American People. I trust we will have a democratic president in the white house after the 2020 election. Congresswoman deb haaland, thank you very much for your time. We will watch for the native forum youre there for in sioux city iowa, tomorrow. Thank you very much. Yes, thank you too. Still ahead President Trump wades back into the conversation over gun law and once again puts the emphasis on Mental Health. As we go to break, mayor Pete Buttigieg takes on the hardhitting questions. Where do you stand on abolishing the designated hitter in the mlb . This is going to get me in all kinds of trouble. The right answer is yes. I mean, the good thing about the way we have it now i guess you can go either way, depending on the league. I feel like you ought to have to play both parts in the inning. Its been two weeks since backtoback Mass Shootings in el paso, texas, and dayton, ohio, and three weeks since the mass shooting at the garlic festival in gilroy, california. What we are watching to see in washington is whether efforts to bring gun reform can survive a long, hot recess. Polling out of the wall street journal say three quarters polled support red flag laws and of those 57 strongly support them and 62 support an assault weapons ban. Even three quarters of americans polled are in favor of a voluntary gun buyback program. Mean wh meanwhile, President Trump is discussing gun control with legislators saying its the most substantive talk the president has had to date. And in a sign of moment senator Lindsey Graham said this on thursday so we talked today about the red flag laws and background checks. And i said the time has come to do more and we will find hopefully bipartisan states here and im trying to explain to parents when they come to washington why we didnt do something. And the panel is back with me now. Congressman, let me go to you on this. What is the sense among House Democrats of how serious they could be about any proposal that Mitch Mcconnell might be willing to put forward with Trump Administration support, is there a sense that if youre able to get something done, that thats a positive step or is there a reluctance to trust what theyre willing to do . No, i mean, its a reluctance to trust what they are saying theyre going to do. And the reason why is because we past two pieces of legislation, two background bills and Mitch Mcconnell has not acted on them et wh yet. Theyre very reasonable bills. They close private sales of gun and closes the gun show loophole. The other bill would simply stop what happened in charleston from being able to happen again and they wont move on those. They talk a lot about the red flag laws. Welcome, most democrats i have talked to said they support these laws, including colleagues. But if theyre not going to move two reasonable pieces of legislation that arent going to cause anyone to lose their guns or have Second Amendment rights scaled back, then its just really hard to trust them at all. I hope we can do this for the american public. As a texan, we are still grieving over what happened in el paso. Of course. It was a terrible tragedy. And we want to he so something done now. Enough talk. Brendan buck, it does seem clear theres no way Mitch Mcconnell is going to pass the two bills the president is talking about. Its will be some slimmer package. But what is your take as somebody whos been behind the scenes how real this might be. Mitch mcconnell, as seen as a political shift, said it is atenable. Mitch mcconnell bought himself some time. He said he with will talk about this when we get back. I think what that was, was he doesnt get too far out on President Trump. The one person to decide who this will be done is donald trump. Hes the only person who can go to the voters who care kwie passionately about this and overlap with his base and say were going to do something on background checks. You dont need to worry this is a broader conspiracy were going to take your guns. He has that type of credibility with them. The problem is the president has never showed the ability to stick to republicans to do something they havent wanted to do. What this will require is a persistent effort where he continues to push and his Attention Span is not something we really know as one of his strengths. I actually worry if none of this comes together the moment that it happened was at that rally in New Hampshire on thursday when he said a line, it is not guns that pull the trigger, its people. Its not just the line that he said, its the reaction from the crowd. They roared when he said that, and i think we need to appreciate these president views these rallies as focus groups and they drive his decision making. If he sees pushback from his voters that he cares most about they dont want to do anything on this, thats a bad sign. I was at the New Hampshire rally and was going to point out the same thing. That was the biggest applause line when he said people pull the trigger, guns dont. And i felt like his shift to uk thatting about mental institutions on the way there, i felt like i had seen that shift before after the parkland shooting when there seems to be serious talk about gun control legislation and all of a sudden he started talking about Arming Teachers in the class room and that whole totally shifted the conversation over another way. I thought this time it was going in a different direction because when i talked to people at the white house tuesday, there was really substantive conversations going on but by the time i got to thursday, i felt maybe were pulling back. I think what the president needs to realize though is that those rallies are not focus groups. Those are echo chambers. People that wear maga hats and pretty much agree with everything he says. If you talk to Business Leaders in downtown dallas, you talk to Business Leaders in downtown ft. Worth that are republicans that belong to the nra that have memberships at local shooting ranges here, they will tell you they dont think people need to own assault weapons and they will tell you we need expanded background checks. Those are the people he lost in 2018 in the midterm. Guess what . Hes going to lose them again if he does not act. So former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords nonprofit is once again calling on congress to act with the help of 12 military veterans, members of the giffords veterans collision signed a letters calling for the senate to debate legislation that would require a background check on every single gun sale. These veterans who have all served for years in Different Military branches also appeared in a new video arguing that it is and should be possible to pass common sense gun reform without violating the Second Amendment. Watch. There are some weapons out there that, frankly, nobody should have access to. And actually there are some people out there who should never have access to any weapons. This isnt gun collecting, this is murder. Its killing. If we dont find a way to stop that, theres something wrong with us as a society. Of course, some of the faces you might recognize general michael hayden, general stan crystal. We heard from some of these generals, susan paige, before. But still another piece of evidence in the sort of building case that the ground is shifting on this issue. You wouldnt think it would be hard, nine out of ten americans support background checks. That includes a majority of gun owners. It includes a majority of nra members. It includes a majority of republicans. Yet, it is very hard in our political system at this moment to get anything passed, include background checks despite the wide support it has. You said it would require persistent effort on part of the president and also quick action on the part of the president. Because we get into next year, were not passing any kind of measure. So theres a very small window over the next several weeks for this to go someplace or else its just over i think until the next election. Excellent point. July 2019 was the hottest month on record here on planet earth, which means it was the hottest since the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or noaa began logging temperatures back in 1880. In july the average temperature across both land and sea was 1. 71 degrees above the 20th century average. Noaa says the record temperatures last month also shrank arctic and Antarctic Sea ice to historic lows and on top of that a u. N. Report warns the food supply is threatened as a result of escalating drought, flooding and other natural disasters. The report also found nature, across most of the globe, has been, quote, significantly altered by multiple human drivers. Joining me now is the democratic governor of Washington State and 2020 president ial candidate jay inslee. Governor, its great to have you on the program. Thank you. So lets start where we left off before our last commercial break, which is news that july was the hottest month on record according to noaa, which has been measuring such things since 1880. How is it that the political will to solve in problem, your candidacy has yet to take off, but how do we put this at the forefront in a way that actually makes a meaningful difference . We should elect a president who doesnt deny Clear Climate science but in fact makes defeating the Climate Crisis the number one priority of the United States. Thats what i have pledged to do and that message is gaining momentum. We have over 45,000 new contributors since the last debate, only a few thousand away to getting 130, 00. If anybody wants to make sure of this message is in the debate, go to jay inslee. Com. The reason weve been blocked is one party that has a moronic refusal to accept science. I saw i senator the other day saying its always hot in july, we shouldnt worry about it. The other thing that was equally ironic is when senator inhofe brought a snowball to the senate and said its snowing so we must not have a problem. This would be dark humor if it wasnt so dangerous but this attitude of rejecting clear science is dangerous, and, frankly, its embarrassing. As soon as we get a president and senate and get rid of the filibuster so we can adopt Climate Change legislation, we will do what this nation is capable of doing, which is innovating our way to defeat Climate Change. Im very confident of that. Mitch mcconnell a couple of months ago acknowledged very directly for what i can remember was one of the first times that it wasnt a tough question that there were manmade pauses behind Climate Change. Did you read anything into that . Do you think there is a political shift here that some of those republicans that you use are going to start paying attention to or not . We will have a shift when we remove the climate denial from the white house, and we have president ial leadership. Look, unfortunately, we would love to see bipartisanship on this issue. To me its just really sad that the spirit of teddy roosevelt, the good republican who believed in conservation, is now totally absent from the Republican Party. What you are hearing, frankly, are talking point from republican pollsters who are telling them, guys, you look too stupid to deny Climate Change so now you have to just say well, maybe we wont deny it, we will just not do anything about it. Its the same approach to gun safety. The Republican Party now because theyre safety. The Republican Party, because they were so afraid of the shadow of donald trump, they wont act on Climate Change and now the same thing on gun safety where they know the country needs action, and the country demands action, and the Republican Party wont confront the fossil fuel industry, and they wont confront the nra. We need a leader that will confront both folks, i am certainly willing to do it. And this country needs to save ourselves from this crisis that affects health care. This is health care issues. You raised the fossil fuel industry question, and trump addressed this at his rally in New Hampshire. Abolished the industries that are fueling our economic boom. Can you imagine this . Were sitting on great wealth and they want to take it away from us. And the alternatives dont have the power. They dont have the power. They want wind. The president being particularly provocative, but there are questions about all the people employed in the industries, the towns that depend on them and et cetera. How would your plan address trying to tackle and do what we need to do on climate while also looking out for the livelihoods of people that would be hurt by the transition . I dont know what is worse about donald trump, his narcissism or two years ago i drove my electric car about 180 miles up a mountain and came back perfectly safely and in comfort, and Clean Energy Jobs are going faster twice as fast as the average in the United States economy. The fact of the matter is this is a boom for the American Economy to grow Clean Energy Jobs. And his basis is just based on ignorance. We have to transition over the next several decades off of fossil fuels. This is the entire Scientific Community saying it in the world, including the best science we have paid for. And it ought to make us mad that we have paid for this silence for our tax dollars and now donald trump is trying to hide it from us. I had a guy resign from the department of agriculture because trump would not allow him to share his science which shows the traditional value of our food will go down if we dont transition off of these fossil fuels. We are a confident and big and bold nation and we need a big and bold plan to defeat the Climate Crisis and do what he did today. So before i let you go, sir, and you mentioned your donor threshold and you are also polling at zero percent in some of the latest surveys which is not enough to make the next debate stage coming up here. If you are not able to get on the stage what is your plan for your campaign . Like i said, we had a huge burst. I hope the National Party will have a debate on national Climate Change. We can come up on the forum coming up on Climate Change. Love to be there. I hope people want to be there in the next debate, and we are just a few thousand short, and to make sure i get that threshold that that would be good. I dont see a recession. Everything this president is doing are all positive things for the economy. Dont be afraid of optimism. You know me, im an optimist. I think its looking unsteady economically. You dont think the trade war has anything to do with this . China is a special situation. China is bearing the entire burden of the tariffs. The American Consumer understands these tariffs are a tax on them. When it comes to rural america, its just the scenery that he sees out the helicopter on his way to the golf course. If you get asked about a site survey about purchasing greenland, can i go with you . Welcome back. Three years ago today something unexpected happened. Sometimes in the heat of debate, and speaking on a multitude of issues, you dont choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that. Previous it or n and believe it or not, i regret it. And i do regret it. Particularly where it may have caused personal pain. It was not totally clear what then candidatetrump was r referring to at the time, maybe the gold family or a judge, but that has been repeated view times since, and as the president turns his focus to reelection, and a job economy with strong growth, and theres no indication his tone is going to soften. A remark pbl remarkable moment would show great weakness, they hate israel and all jewish people. You will find in the washington post, President Trump is following the same limited playbook that got him to the president see, whether the tactics have the same potency they once had is the question that will determine his and the countrys future. Meanwhile Serious Problems are in front of him, and hes struggling to find the answers. Dan also writes, quote, meanwhile the president is talking about trying to buy greenland. Really . You will be surprised to learn the White House Press corps asked him about those plans earlier tonight. Well, greenland, it got released somehow and its something we talked about. Denmark essentially owns it, and we are good allies with denmark and we protect denmark like we protect large portions of the world, and i said strategically we would be interested and i will talk to them, and its not number one on the burner, i can tell you that. Here this hour is the correspondents and dan, lets start with you. We will read more of your piece in a second, but you are obviously somebody who has chronicled many of president s in a soberminded way. I was struck by the language you used in talking about this greenland controversy, which is one of the many things that cropped up this week in that it seems to be getting harder and harder to take the president seriously in a way we traditionally have taken president s because they are president. I think its hard to know when to take it seriously and not to take it seriously, so when Something Like the greenland story pops up in the wall street journal, and you think is this a serious discussion or something the president threw out . He clarified tonight this was not a frontburner issue, which i think everybody seems was the case. Seemed like a safe assumption. But sometimes you dont know, and because he communicates constantly on twitter and the last three or four days it has been a nonstop flury of tweets, and everything looks equal there and you dont know what he really wants to concentrate on. We know his main obsession is winning reelection and i think thats pretty clear, so all of this stuff one way or another seems to fit into that, and part of the point i was trying to make, we dont know whether theres a recession brewing but there are warning signs we all take seriously. We have not seen a president intervene in the way he did with the two Congress Women that were going to israel, and he told israel not to let them in. Hes taking extraordinary actions and he is not doing it in a way that seems to be constructive and resolve some of the issues. You also write in your piece, quote, after a week in which the threat of recession rocked Global Financial markets his trade war with china showed no signs of progress, and President Trump went to bed thursday night with other weighty issues on his mind, breaking the attendance record with elton john. He has brought into focus something fundamental about him, he has little understanding of what it means to govern, and he would rather tweet from the bleachers. Alexi, you talked to Trump Administration officials consistently for your reporting. How does this play out on a daily basis, and it was underscored, the president is all over the place, and to dans point, yes, in some cases its because he is trying to gin up his base because its aimed at his reelection. Yeah, and something that was revealing that happened this week is when folks close to him, his allies and folks working to get him reelected sort of mimicked the warning signs we have talked about on the economy, we dont have the positive narrative that we are spinning on the economy, he wont win the reelection, and some of those close the him are taking the private freakouts public, and i think that suggests the real fears that are happening when a recession, as you mentioned s, is looming. You can find things that show the economy is doing well, but there are a number of signs of late that shows its not doing well. Whether he tries to distract, whether its israel or talking about Elizabeth Warren, the people around him are feeling signal warnings because they are feeling it like President Trump is feeling it behind closed doors. How much of this do you think matters in terms of his reelection . We have seen this president break, basically, every rule in the book. The rule has been if the economy is not doing well the chances of reelection are not good, and do you think that will hold here . He will find somebody else to blame for that. It will not be President Trumps fault. Number one. Aside from playing too his base, hes also distracting at the same time. You know, yes, the talib issue, what about next years holidays . When the economy goes down, when theres a recession, its the little guy that gets hurt. When the tariffs are imposed, people pay the best price would be the poorest and the middle class in this country. Thats who really are going to face the brunt of these policies or the lack of policy. Theres no strategy. Theres yet to be a strategy. Right. Or at least they are not communicating the strategy. You have the farmers, very patriotic, and they are not being let in on the deal and thats a big, big problem for the president. Dan, what is your sense of where the country is on these questions . Are they do they care about whether this president is focused on governing as you outlined, or whether hes off on the various tangents . I think most people screen out the tweets and, you know, i think we have all had conversations with Trump Supporters that would say i wish he would get rid of the twitter feed. Theyre not following things in the way that people inside the beltway are following them or commenting on them. Theres an exhaustion factor, however, that has set in from the way he has governed and been president. I think that has taken a toll. The single largest problem for him in terms of reelection is the state of economy, because thats the one thing that he has going for him. There are all kinds of other things where we can see that hes got problems for himself, but as long as the economy has been strong, that has kept people with him, people who might otherwise break away so the threat of a recession, if that were actually to come to pass would be a grave threat to his reelection. Alexi, do you think theres a strategy we showed how many times they said this morning, be optimistic. Thats not a strategy for putting the economy back on firmer footing . Its good message discipline, and hammering the talking points they want us to talk about, but its not a plan. We were talking to obama trump vo vo voters, and from health care to infrastructure to social security, which is a little surprising, but its something that i have heard from various voters around the battleground midwestern states and they are picking up on his lack of a plan as he talks about things that dont affect their lives, whether its israel and the Congress Women he has identified as opponents, and the 2020 democrats, they are not super plugged into the election, but he says he will have a plan in the second term and do we want to wait for that . All the stuff going on with china, if it works out they could say could lead to a lot of economic growth, and theres people that say it looks like he doesnt know what hes doing, and it could turn into a recession, which if it does, we are screwed. If he doesnt figure out how to handle china in a way that is reflective of having a clear plan, which he doesnt have in all of these things. This is a microcausism of your point, hurting the little guy. I dont follow twitter all that much in the hollywood space, but its exhausting, and you know, you just kaoeupbt ind it out and i think a lot of people are tuning it out. That runs its course too for celebrities everywhere. What do they say, six seasons on the average reality show or Something Like that . Doesnt feel like it. Its so exhausting. Talking about the size of his audience at his rallies, and talking about how popular he s. Et cetera, and i think it goes back to, you know, his tv days, and how he deems success. Lets talk about china for a a second. One of the biggest hong kong protests took place so far over the weekend, and they were peaceful after snarling one of the worlds busiest airports and a bloody crackdown with police earlier in the week, and earlier this month President Trump was disinclined to get involved. Something is probably happening with hong kong, because when you look at whats going on, they have had riots for a long period of time, and i dont know what their attitude is, and somebody said at some point they will want to stop it, and thats between hong kong and china, and hong kong is not part of china and they will have to deal with that themselves and dont needed a vice. During a 36minute chat with reporters today the president went at hrelength to show that understood the factors at play. I never have seen 2 million people, when you talk about crowd size, maggie, those are serious crowds, the hong kong crowds. It would be hard to deal if they do violence, and i think its a very hard thing to do if theres violence, and, you know, i am president but thats a little beyond me because i think there would be tremendous Political Sentiment not to do something, so i hope, because i think we could end up doing a good deal, and i think china, by the way, needs a deal more than we do. Reporter [ inaudible ] . Well, i will tell you what i do support. I support liberty and i support democracy. I understand what is going on very well over there. I would love to see it worked out in a humane fashion. I have a confidence in the talents of president xi. If he met with the protesters within a short period of time they would work something out that is good for everybody. I really believe that. Dan, i think the president read your column where you called into question his ability to answer some of the questions. I suspect the tweet he sent out last week saying what he said here, which is that i think if president xi would sit down, everything would work out fine. I think that got the attention of the people around him, and this was a little more nuanced tonight in the way he was talking about the risks for china, if theres a violent refreshen, another tianamen square. Again, it doesnt show he wants to send a clear signal one way or the other. We know he wants this trade deal to come together and that he is loathed to do anything that might put that at risk, and stepping out strongly in favor of the demonstrators in hong kong, in his estimation might do that, and therefore he doesnt sound like hes got an effective response. We got a lot more to come tonight. Jacob checks in and so does katy tur, yes, that katy tur. Shes coming back briefly tonight. The finale of american swamp starts at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. And we have a brandnew interview with senator sanders, but first congressman steve king draws a division with his latest comments. As we go to break, a stroll down memory lane. Congressman steve king of iowa sparked another firestorm this week that drew condemnation from republicans and democrats alike. Many of the reasons for exceptions for rape and insist, because its not the babys galt, and what if it was okay and pulled those products out from rape and insist, would there be any World Population if we did that, and i know i cant certify i am not a product of part of that. Last night king defended those comments about rape and insist during a town hall in his home state. I think the factual provoking statements are more than what some can handle. I am the author of the heartbeat bill at the National Level and the state level. I did not allow exceptions for rape and insist in that bill because those babies that are born as a product of those activities are as precious as you are or any of my grandchildren are. During that same town hall king was also confronted about some of his past comments about immigrants. How are you planning on making your image better in front of immigrants . Because we like i said, we have all seen, heard and read the comments you made from saying that we have calfs the size of watermelons, and installing electric fences theres no discrimination in anything i have ever done. I get called names because i stand on principal, and i think you are reading some of this in spanish and the watermelon quote is not a quote i ever made. I am glad you brought your fan club. Lets be clear, by the way, what king said in 2015 was a reference to immigrants and he talked about immigrants having calfs the size of cantaloupes, but the gist of what was going on was as the questioner described. On the show we have mr. Kings opponent. Thanks for being on the program. Thank you for having me. What would you do differently this time that you think could get you across that finish line . Has anything changed . Its not and day compared to where we started off two years ago for the Democratic Party in this district. There was an abandoned district so we had to start from scratch and we have the infrastructure in place now, and we phmoved th needle 24 points in the last cycle, and success breeds success. Already in the first two weeks of our campaign, the people coming out to the events, 25 of them are people we did not see in the last cycle, so theres an energy and a buzz. You see kings vulnerability more and more. Even before he said his comments, and now it just is more its very clear that hes very vulnerable right now. Do you get the sense that you are seeing people who have voted for steve king in the past show up at these events or voters that have stayed home during the election in the past . How would you characterize the new supporters you are seeing . Well, i would say a lot of them i think i earned a lot of trust last time, but trust takes time, and what i am seeing, especially amongst the agriculture community, i had several groups of farmers come up afterwards, they said if we would have known you were so close we would have endorsed you sooner. You see the level of frustration with people in the district. When we talk and give oxygen to his comments, what we are doing were not focusing on the needs of this district, and thats what my kaplg pains are about. I take the rv behind me to all the counties, and most of the time we went five and six times and we plan on doing that again and we get out there to the people and try to bring people together. We got 25,000 more votes than there are democrats in the district. What we did last time was the model for success, but we just ran out of time. What is your sense of how your campaign might perform against another republican, somebody not named steve king, if, in fact, he loses in the primary before you get a chance to take him on . Right. He is very vulnerable right now and he has his primary opponents and we dont know who the candidate is going to be, and that doesnt change what we do. I will take this rv and get out there, and if you went to the town halls last cycle, i didnt mention his name. I didnt want to be the antiking person but i wanted to stand for something. When we do that, we bring people together. If its about health care or an economy, or cleaning up washington from the special interests that dictate our democracy, those things are needs in this district, and when you have king talk about reproductive health, but he fails to talk about the 30 ogbyn units that have closed seupbinc has been in office, and he doesnt talk about the things that matter every day, and thats where we are at in this district, we are an aging district and losing population, and i have 55,000 farmers that have their backs against the wall and hes not on the agriculture committee. What do you see as a difference between Congress King and President Trump, if anything . Right. You know, its very interesting to see trump distance himself from king. I dont know. I end up just focusing on king more than trump. What we are seeing, i think its very interesting to see trump talk about or not talk about king because they are so hand and hand, and even in the last cycle when he did his event in council bluffs, he was talking about him as his man or Something Like that. King is toxic. Republicans dont want to be around him right now precipitation governor and senator try to back away from things, but to be honest he has been saying these things for years and they campaigned with him the night before the election in this district, and its interesting from our point of view. And i can go in at this i used to play minor league baseball, and i am going at this the same way when i played minor league ball. When i played baseball, it doesnt matter what team i was facing was or righthanded or lefthanded, didnt matter. Would you support opening impeachment proceedings into President Trump . Well, i mean, i am not running on that. Its something that i think we need to have a discussion about where do you stand on that right now . Well, right now its an issue this Current Congress has. We dont know if hes going to be in office when i am there or not, and so its one of those things where its we have to wait and see. All right, thank you very much for coming on the program. We will, of course, be watching your race closely. Coming up, a live report from South Carolina where 2020 democrats are trying to make inroads with black voters. Were back after this. Welcome back. 2020 candidates are treading over key election territory today, including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren who has been in South Carolina after visiting atlanta yesterday. One of their important goals after their stops, connect with black voters, which according to polls they have struggled to do so far. Joe biden continues to hold a commanding lead in that demographic. Meanwhile a new nbc wall street journal pole shows voters with a neglect view of biden, warren and sanders, most seeing sanders negatively. Now joining me is Shaquille Brewster who had a chance to interview Bernie Sanders today. What have you seen him do to appeal to africanamericans . For Bernie Sanders, he started in atlanta, georgia, talking to a group of 5,000 black millennials, and then coming out here to columbia, South Carolina, having a basketball tournament and visiting churches and having a block party, trying to make his pitch to africanamericans, and today he highlighted that trip with his criminal justice plan, about 6,000 words that goes kwraupbdz what he normally says on the trail. He includes the elements of ending cash bail or eliminating private prison facilities, and a full overhaul of the policing system in this country, and he goes beyond that and looks at ways to change the system from a more punitive criminal Justice System to one that incentivizes progress and he came to South Carolina to roll out the policy. South carolina pwhrupbtd hblunt momentum, and he came and had the big loss to hillary clinton. Hes trying to build his support among africanamericans, and listen to what he told me earlier today. I think we are doing quite well with the africanamerican voter. I think the issues we are talking about resonate very strongly with the latino and africanamerican community, and i think if you walked around with me you would see a lot of support from the africanamerican community, and its not just the Justice System, its the health care system, and that affects everybody, and even more in the africanamerican community. In that pew poll we were talking about, one nugget that is standing out, 45 of africanamericans didnt mention a preference, didnt have a first choice in their democratic candidate, so even Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren, that gives them hope they can expand their support with africanamericans so they can come and give their pitches more. Congressman, Bernie Sanders struggles last time with africanamerican voters n. South carolina he ran into a lot of trouble, and part of what people talked about as being an issue is that he would talk about Economic Justice as a broad issue and didnt want to or didnt seem to acknowledge that africanamericans have particular concerns that they feel need to be acknowledged, that he just wants to talk about all people in the same way and that that glossed over a lot of their problems. Doesnt sound necessarily to me that he moved past that stance he held before . At least not by what hes saying, but his actions in going to the churches and going to the basketball tournament and having the picnic, thats really grassroots and getting out there, and people want to be touched. I think bernie as well is facing a more competitive field, theres many more options here as well that didnt exist four years ago. Hes not running second to biden necessarily . No, running third to warren, i guess you could say. I think theres much more competition and thats his biggest challenge right now. Alexi, you have been doing voting on black millennial voters. They do have a much wider field . Yeah, black millennials and black voters are different ideally. Black millennials say they would rather choose somebody other than biden if given the choice between biden and one of the other democrats. What is interesting, we are seeing democrats try to focus on young black voters on ways we have not seen in past cycles. Of course thats not the only place that black millennials exist, and if we are technical and say millennials start at 24 you may not find any black millennials on the campuses are we that old . Oh, dear. Sorry, continue. Theres an interesting focus that we are supposed to watch when we are looking at folks not just mentioning hbcus, but sanders said this, what i am talking about i hope resinates with the africanamerican community, and we are not all in jails or prisons, and the mortality rate that Elizabeth Warren talks about, black voters respond well to, but one thing i hear from black voters a lot, are they going to say things like this in a white oaudience . Theres a skepticism about pandering from the 2020 candidates. Coming up, katy tur joins me live with a look at outstanding reporting in tonights finale of american swamp. Thats coming up next. Nice. What are you looking at we have heard so much about it, infrastructure, and here we are and nothing is done. What we wanted to do was figure out why congress doesnt act. Its obvious why we are not working together, but we wanted to find an issue where everybody agreed. If you look at the state of the union, you will show one issue came up where both sides stood up and started clapping and that was an idea on the infrastructure deal, where the democrats and republicans and president could Work Together to fix the crumbling infrastructure. We wanted to figure out what was at the root of it and in the episode we show you its not just disagreements on both sides, its the thing we started the series with. The problem is money, and it comes down to who lawmakers are trying to please, their constituents or their donors. Jacob, what exactly is the answer to this here . I mean, i am obviously up on the hill every week, and this seemed like something everybody could potentially get onboard with, and what did you guys learn about why this is so hard . Basically lawmakers need to put the American People ahead of their own political forechures fortunes is the bottom line. Under the hudson river that connects the corridor, i am not overstating it, its freaky to go down there and the 200,000 passengers a day that go under the river and in that tunnel should be freaked out and they should know how bad of a condition that tunnel is in. Politicians are not only raising money for themselves not stop and not focussing on these issues, but they are required to raise money in order to introduce bills as leaders of certain committees, and i think we have the clip of katy talking to the congressman from colorado, and if you have it i would love to show it. Theres very little time to read bills, to analyze legislation, to develop coalitions with fellow members because theres so much pressure to raise money. Is this a partisan thing . Both sides do it. What are the consequences of that . Well, the consequences are you got to have a lot of friends in this town and the way you get friends in this town is to make sure that you are voting the way they want you to vote. So there it is, as plain as can be. At the end of the day this is happening on multiple issues all across the political spectrum whether its guns or immigration, and stuff that you can agree on protecting human beings lives first and foremost, but they put their political lives first. Its not just a catastrophic failure that lawmakers are the army corps of engineers are worried about, if the tunnel under the hudson river that jacob went under, if that is closed down for any reason, and its not just an inconvenience, its an economic driver that would be shutdown, and Chuck Schumer tells me in this episode, if that happens it could shutdown a part of the country, and i am thinking of the brent spence bridge as well, and we go there in this episode, too. I cant wait to see it. American swamp, the finale, please stick around and make sure you tune in. Thank you both. Im taking this fight directly to donald trump, and that is what im exclusively focussed on right now. Im not going to run for senate. Im running for president. Yeah. I mean, probably almost a year ago i said that a good candidate will not be me. A number of president ial hopefuls say they arent interested in running for the senate, despite pressure. One possible exception of course former governor john who ended his president ial run this week. At what point i mean, at what point is the greatest good here for some of theongressional side . I think you have to look at themselves individually, you know, how often do you get a chance to run for president of the United States . Its maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity. So i think they will let this play out as long as they possibly can before they look back or check back on what their other options will be. I think after this next series of debates, people will realize they will not be at the big dance that i think they start to take a second look at their own careers. Dan, how much of this is about how serving in the u. S. Senate has changed as a job and as the institution as evolved . Well, i think thats a part of it. And certainly for anybody who has been a governor, you know, a john h. Who i actually think probably will end up running for senate. Yeah. Thats going to be a big culture change for him. Always been frustrating. You have seen governors come to washington and go into the senate and theyre often frustrated. He will play out this president ial campaign as long as he possibly can. Even if hes not on the debate stage, he does not want to run for senate. Beto orourke, the same thing he said last week. Yeah, for sure. Its always a combination of factors for sure. All right.
