Schedule. It comes after he spent the weekend attacking congressman c cummings and slamming baltimore as a disgusting, rat infested mess. Theres been criticism from allies and democrats. The Baltimore Sun editorial bood have their own criticism. Better to have a few rats than to be one. Trump has responded by calling congressman cummings and his ally racist. The first africanamerican Lieutenant Governor michael ste steele called for the president to stop the divisive words and visit the city of baltimore. Mr. President , come on down. The streets are ready for you. The neighborhoods are ready for you. Folks want to talk to you. Just show up. Put the tweet down and show up. To the people of baltimore, you are resilient. You are strong and you are so much better than anything that anyone ever has to say negative about you. Baltimore is just a short train ride away from washington, d. C. Joining me now with the latest is geoff bennett. We havent heard much from the Republican Party condemning the president s comments. We do have some new reporting that the House Republicans plan their yearly retreat in baltimore, of all places, despite the president s attacks. What more do we know about that . Reporter this retreat in baltimore has actually been planned for a few months. This is in no way a rebuke to the president or to make any sort of statement by republicans. We do know that House Republicans have also left town for six weeks. The entire house of representatives for their august recess and so they wont have to be peppered with questions by the press on how they do respond to the president. The senate is about the come in so Senate Republicans will get asked but since the president started this tweet tirade on saturday against elijah kcummins and baltimore, theres been very few republican who is have said anything. Its been radio silent from the Republican Party. Look, we just went through this a couple weeks ago when the president had tweets about the so called squad. The four democratic congresswomen telling them to go back to where they came from. There was few dozen republicans who came out denouncing the president s remarks saying they didnt agree with them but when it came down to it, there was little opposition from republicans. The house of representatives put forward a resolution of condemnation against the president and his quote racist tweets and only four republicans joined all democrats in that resolution. These were republicans who were from very swing districts who are at risk of losing their seats in 2020. Fast forward to today when we have another controversy involving the president and racist sentiments from him and republicans right now are silent. Lets talk about the president s reaction to all of this and if hes very much digging in because we have democrats that are criticizing the president. We have Baltimore City leaders who are criticizing the president. We heard Michael Steele there criticizing the president over these racist remarks. It seems as if the president , himself, is very much digging in. Reporter its great to see you. The president is leaning in. Faced with charges of racism. Hes projecting. Hes saying im not racist. Elijah cummings is the racist. Hes also trying to bring the reverend al sharpton into this entire thing. The president is escalating these attacks. Two weekends ago the president was attacking the four congresswomen of color. Just this past weekend the president is attacking the well regarded head of the oversight committee. The president in his tweets try to paint baltimore as some rat infested hellscape. The average income is higher than the district jim jordan represents. The president was hosting a meeting of his wonderful inner city pastors. The white house hasnt given us an update. It was supposed to be closed press. We have gotten no update just who was invited or what they potentially talking about. I texted a handful of the pastors but it would appear and well have to wait learn that the president is turning to this group to provide him with kind of political cover that he is seeking given the charges of racism that have been levelled against him. Here is what is most troubling. Between comments that the president made about the four freshmen congresswomen and now what hes been saying about e Elijah Cummings. It seems the president has figured out this is resonating with his white male base. Is this the kind of language well see in the lead up to 2020. This divisive racist language because he feels like its resonating with his base and what will put him over the edge to win reelection in 2020 . Reporter we have talked about how we are both low to parse the finer comments of racism given the threat it poses to black and brown people but to your question, yes. Im told his advisers think this love it or leave it approach to patriotism after the initial attacks that they work for him. Yo y if you look at a reuters poll, his standing with republicans actually ticked up. To your question, will we see more of this . Yes. One because his advisers think its a winner but we also know based on who donald trump was as a private citizen, as a candidate and as a president , we know what he happens to believe. Yes, we will see more of this. Good seeing you both. While baltimores leaders have come out to condemn trumps attacks, they are making a plea. We call on state, local and state officials to articulate policies and strategies for moving us forward as a strong democracy through a Racial Equity lens that prioritizes people over profit. Joining me is one of the coauthors of that piece. Shes now the managing director for k through 12 education policy at center for american progress. What do you make so far of the response with regards to the president s attacks on Elijah Cummings and the city of baltimore . Thanks so much for having me. What i make out of it is that baltimore is as strong as it ever was and is going to be stronger than it used to be in light of the attacks coming its way. Under the leadership of one of my former colleagues, the folk who got together to write and sign onto the letter that we wrote felt enough was enough. We dont live in a Reality Television show. We live in reality. Its time for our leaders to step up and join those of us who are on the ground and digging in our heels and doing the work to move forward on policy. As much as people want to respond to the shenanigans coming over twitter, we expect to do the work. Thats what we wanted to voice. We need to get people registered and out to vote. We need focus on the democratic base. We need to focus on democratic voters and focus on the people who count on us to support them when we sit in seats of privilege and we sit in offices and Conference Rooms where decisions are being made on their behalf. Why now . Theres been many deviivisive moments and yet you waited now to come out and write this oped. Whyactually, we didnt wait for anything. It seemed like the right time. There was an email saying ive had enough. The question of whether or not im american enough. The question of whether or not my blackness qualifies me to be either three fifths of as american as opposed to a whole american is enough. Many of us chimed in and talked about conversations weve been having over the previous few days about how we in our lifetimes have been told to go back to where we came from, go back to africa. When those statements came up, it seemed like the right opportunity to say listen, we have been fighting for this country. Weve given our time and our talent to this country both in the Obama Administration and through today. Were going to continue to do that. Were going to reclaim this conversation and move us forward and let people know that there are people working on their behalves and we want to stand shoulder to shoulder with them as we stood shoulder to shoulder with each other. Im a first generation citizen of this country. My parents are jamaican and costa rican. To hear that language from the highest office is deplorable. It doesnt speak to the people in the president s own base who i know are trying to find their way to an america that we can all believe in. Hes dragging them down a pathway thats unamerican. We wanted to step in at this time, what we learned in the Obama Administration is put our heads down and do the work. We dont spend a lot of time responding back and forth with people who would attack the president or his family. This was a moment we felt like we needed to pull our heads up and make clear were not going anywhere. Thank you so much. Thanks. While the president is seizing on this racist language as part of his strategy, democrat candidates are continuing to shape of their policy offerings ahead of this weeks second debate. The first round democrats avoided making the president the topic of the night. They were challenging each other on the issues including racism, immigration and health care. The number one issue for many voters. Considering President Trumps recent attacks it does beg the question as to whether trump will emerge more frequently as the opponent to challenge for all 2020 democratic president ial candidates. Thanks for joining us on this. Very much appreciate it. How do the candidates here frame this conversation . Do they have to address the real elephant in the room in these second round of debates which is the president because its seen as if the number one enemy on the stage at the last debates was joe biden. Will they be ignoring the elephant in the room if they dont talk about him . Reporter exactly. That first debate there were two different conversations that were going on. What you hear heading into this debate is not only a conversation about baltimore, about Elijah Cummings, about the doj announcing it was going to lift the moratorium on the death penalty. This greater conversation that is coming out of this white house. You also have the conversation about the democratic debate at hand. What you showed was Kamala Harris willingness to cut the contrasts with the likes of joe biden and others on stage. Kamala harris said i intend to be powe lilite. I will express differences. Campaign aides tell me that Kamala Harris will continue to point out those differences with her poenopponents as this debat rolls on. Lets talk about this new Health Care Plan that senator harris rolled out. Its already receiving some criticism as has her Health Care Plan since shes been back and forth as to what she wanted. Talk more about what were seeing on this. Reporter exactly. Theres been a lot of confusion from voters on exactly where Kamala Harris stood on medicare for all. Just this morning, she announced her own plan. Essentially, it would be a medicare for all system in which there would be an immediate entrance of those uninsured and newborns into a government option. Everybody would be covered but then private insurers would be allowed to offer plans which was in contrast. She was a cosponsor on Bernie Sanders plan as well as joe biden are calling into question Kamala Harris plan. The Campaign Manager for Bernie Sanders said her plan is not medicare for all. You can call it whatever you want but its not medicare for all. Joe biden, the former Vice President , his deputy Campaign Manager said shes now transitioning what her position is on medicare for all. I want to play a little sound from Michael Bennett who we just caught up here just a few moments ago. I want to let you hear from him. I think that we need to be much clearer than that with the american people. Since we past the Affordable Care act, ive led the fight on a public option. That continues to be my position. Im not changing it two days before the debate. The reason thats is my position is i think thats the fastest way to get to universal Health Care Coverage in this country. Her plan still gets rid of employer based Health Insurance in america. Go ask the people around here whether they want to get rid of employer based Health Insurance in america. Whether the carpenters i met with iowa in last week want the Democratic Party taking away their Health Insurance. Theres no reason to do it. Theres no reason to load up a bunch of taxes on the middle class either. We can have are a public option. Reporter the Harris Campaign says this is a nice middle ground in which private insurers would be able to continue to have a role but the public option would be in play for people to choose from. Thank you. As you well know Election Security has been top of mind recently. Mitch mcconnell defending Election Security right now on the senate floor and digging in and defending his lack of movement. Lets take a listen. This Administration Thanks in large part to dan coats whom i was very sorry to hear is stepping down has increased and improved our intelligence electi collection on these threats. Its enlisted more help from the private sector to identity foreign influence campaigns. Its worked closely with foreign allies and partner who is face similar threats from russia. Its imposed real cost on russia for its misdeeds and cut down on the ability of russian intelligence to operate inside our country. In particular, the department of Homeland Security has deployed special capabilities in all 50 states for detecting malign cyber activity. Its deployed Cyber Security advisers all across our country. It operates National Cyber sk t security and supports an election infrastructure information sharing and analysis center. Among the many offerings to the state, dhs offers Cyber Security assessments, detention and prevention tool, training and Career Development for election officials. All free of charge. Using the hundred of millions of dollars congress sent to the states which i proudly voted for and supported, the authorities who actually conduct our elections on the sfronfront lin have gotten themselves better prepared. This is a long list of significant achievements. Achievements that my democratic colleagues applauded and cheered behind closed doors when the administration briefed us a few weeks ago, but in public, in public, in front of cameras some of my colleagues quickly impressipivoted right back into accusations that only fan the flames of this modern day mccarthyism. Mitch mcconnell talking about Election Security on the senate floor. He said dan coats has improved intelligence election and listed help from the private sector and done a good job. He also talked about the department of Homeland Security and the capability to detect negative activity online. It seems the work is being done for Election Security, defending his own record and the lack of movement in washington. Still to come, dan coats is stepping down and the man the president wants to replace him with is a proven trump ally. His main qualification is his Blind Loyalty to the president. Almost 98 percent of patients on eliquis didnt experience another. And eliquis has significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Eliquis is fda approved and has both. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. The president tweeted yesterday that director of National Intelligence dan coat, the country i countrys top intelligence official will leave office on august 15th. He had not seen eye to eye with the president. Trump is nominated John Ratcliff to succeed coats. Some democrats are expressing skepticism over the decision. Ratcliff was picked for his quote Blind Loyalty to the president. Schumer said he showed that when he tore into bob mueller during his appearance on capitol hill just last week. Watch this. You wrote 180 pages. 180 pages about decisions that werent reached. About potential crimes that werent charged or decided and respectfully by doing that you managed to violate every princip principle in the most sacred tradition of prosecutors not offering analysis about potential crimes that arent charged. I agree with the chairman when he said donald trump is not above the law. Hes not but he sure shouldnt be below the law where volume two puts him. Joining me is tennessee democratic congressman. Thanks so much for joining us. Nice to be with you. Hes saying the intelligence communities have been doing a lot. Very involved with election sdurt. What do you make of some of his comments so far. What he says is true . Mr. Coats gave us a nice analysis. Its one i cant talk about but he felt good about where things were. Hes no longer there. I dont know if he knew what was the Senate IntelligenceCommittee Report that came out about the attempts to get into all 50 States Election systems that came out after mr. Muellers testimony. Im not sure if he knew the reports that iran and china and other countries try to interfere with our election. This is a special time of technology and cyber warfare. Well see other countries involved. We probably do need more money thats in the bill that the house passed. Why is mcconnell calling this partisan legislation if he believes theres a problem when it comes to Election Security . Why not get legislation passed to protect this country from further interference . Theres no really good reason i can think of. You can say it was a fiscal reason but they past the tax scam bill that put us a trillion dollars in debt. They just agreed to the budget deal which i voted for but it was kind of their deal that puts us more into debt. They have done more the debt is the largest its ever been. They dont care about fiscal responsibility. Thats not the issue. Maybe its they figure the outside help will help them. The russians definitely helped trump. Trump wanted that help. He asked the russians. Russia if youre listening. You think mcconnell thinks that too . I think he can think it cant be harmful. Theres no reason this is the most critical time our infrastructure needs to be safe. We should have paper ballots. Part of the bill was to have paper ballots as ways to show the election was secure. The russians want to interfere with democracy and our election proce process. We should have passed be bill. Mcconnell said hes the grim reaper. The graveyard for legislation. Hes been against background checks on guns. Hes been against lower Prescription Health care costs. Hes been against all kind of bills to clean up the swamp and ethics control. Do you think he thinks Election Security is more for the private sector versus the government . Its for the government. This is our democracy at stake. This is the basic frame work of what makes us who we are. People elect their leaders. There should be fair and open elections. They dont want to pass the Voting Rights act which gives people a chance to vote who are discriminated against by state who is have been against blacks and other minorities from voting forrenewed it. They dont want americans to vote. If all americans voted in australians, the republicans would never win. Theyd never win. I want to talk to you about why we brought you here. We diddy verge when Mitch Mcconnell came on. Lets talk about congressman ratcliff making the remarks that we just heard. What do you make of those comments . Do you believe he was auditio auditioniauditio auditioniauditio auditioning for the job . I suspect he was. He treated mr. Mueller disrespectfully. Hes an American Hero. Purple heart. Gave up private law practice to prosecute. Hes telling him what the cardinal rules are for a prosecutor. Mueller could take him and teach him more lessons. He had his nerve and the man is still on the top of his game. I worked with John Ratcliff on ethics and judiciary. Hes not a person who is not smart. Hes smart but he was disrespectful of an American Hero and think russians are responsible for this and to spin that yarn, hes destroying democracy by doing that. You know him. Do you think hes qualified for the job in. No, no. He should have experience in intelligence. You should have more experience in government on ground. Coats had many years in the senate. He was an ambassador in germany. Coats stood up. He didnt think that Vladmir Putin was our pal. Ratcliff will do whatever mr. Trump wants him to do. Do you think he will be confirmed, yes or no sno. Executives from the nations Largest Airlines recently met with President Trump to talk about their long running dispute with airlines based in the middle east. The meeting devolved into a shouting match worthy of the apprentice. Josh letterman broke this story. The president ended upsiding against the airline. How did things end up . Its been a fight going on for years over flights that the u. S. Airlines dont want to be flying between the u. S. And europe. They think it undercuts them. They thought if they could get President Trump attention he could intervene on their side on behalf of u. S. Business. They started airing ads on fox news. The president said he saw the ad. Brought them all in a room together with the head of the airlines, brought them in for this meeting and instead of siding with the u. S. Airline, the president had Something Else in mind. He chided the ceo of American Airlines for his stock price not being what it should be in his view based on the fact the rest of the stock market is surging. He went really hard after the delta ceo both for not showing up to the meeting and for the fact his company is buying its airplanes from air bus, a European Firm instead of from the u. S. Carrier company boeing. The meeting ended with the president saying you know what, if you want to dispute this, take it to this obscure process that the Transportation Department where they are expected to lose. He did not intervene on the side of the u. S. Airlines as many had expected. Why . There are big business interests that are on both sides of this issue. The big u. S. Cargo carriers like fedex, u. P. S. Are on the opposite side of this issue from the big three which is american, united and delta as are jet blue and atlas air trying to compete with the big three ierairlines. The president heard from all of them. He heard what the u. S. Airlines had been doing and said this is not something where im going to tip the scales either way. Its a bit about money. A lot about money and a lot about egos. Thank you. The president s attacks over the last 48 hours over congressman Elijah Cummings have thrust baltimore into the spotlight and reminded us of someone in the innermost circle with a serious stake. His soninlaw whose Real Estate Firm owns more than a dozen apartment complexes in that city. Apartments were owned by the firm racked up more than 200 Code Violations citing unsafe and unhealthy Living Conditions for ten innoceents. A report Detailed Court records and testimonials from former te innoce tenents. Abysmal living condition, maggot, modes and mouse infestatio infestations. The court balts with low income residents when asked about west minister properties, she said this, they are nothing but slum lords. When asked about such condition, Kushner Companies told the paper at the time that it follows industry standards for maintenance staffing and exterminator business and it and its partners spent 10 million on upgrades. We should note that Jared Kushner stepped down in early 2017. He is still a stake holder in that company. The president s attacks come days after the House Oversight committee of which congressman cummings is the chair voted to subpoena emails from kushner and his wife. Joining me now the pro publica reporter part of the investigation. This is startling story to me. Kushner properties involvement in baltimore and their build out and whats been happening in that city with regards to kushner and the properties. Expand more on the story in which i brought viewers up to date on. Its really quite extraordinary. I think a lot of people are not aware that Jared Kushner who are most known for these fancy buildings in new york makes a lot of money in these down scale, low income apartment come pl complexes in abandonment. 8,000 units, about 20,000 People Living in them. When the president said what human beings would choose to live in baltimore, several thousands live in these come pl complexes owned by his soninlaw. The conditions are pretty bleak in a lot of them. All sorts of problems that i found. Leaks, water damage, black mold, mice. Just constant problems. On top of that, Jared Kushner and the company are aggressive about pursuing people in court over all sorts of stuff. Squeezing as much money as they can get out of people. There are hundreds and hundreds of cases in the court system here of them just trying to get hundreds of thousands of dollars of people who cant afford it. Kushner companies are saying we spent 10 million. Were following the practices that most Reality Companies take. We spent 10 million on restoration on my of these properties. What do you say to that . Well what i found in my reporting is their legal tactics are especially aggressive even compared to other companies that operate in this realm. One of the things that very unusual about the Kushner Company is going after tenants who left the apartments prior to them having been bought by the kushners. You had these tenants getting letters from company they never heard several years after leaving the apartments saying you owe us x thousands of dollars for having broken a lease or not paid rent. Reas even cases where tenants did not owe money, they couwould get ta to court. One woman was hounded for three years. Got more than 100 Legal Notices and even though she was completely in the right, she understanded up getting a 5,000 judgment against her. Her wages was garnished, her bank account was garnished. It was only after my article appeared that she got the judgment finally lifted. There were a lot of people like her. We know this is happening. We know the president s attacks have taken place over the last couple of days. I want to taub about the people of baltimore in general. You have done extensive roring about the people of baltimore and the conditions in which they live in. What type of Living Conditions are some of the people in west baltimore facing . As i have driven the streets and done some reporting there myself, there are blocks and blocks of brown stones of homes that are boarded up, looked like they have been set on fire. Theres a part of baltimore that seems as if its been forgotten. Absolutely. Large swaths of west and northwest baltimore are in terrible shape and have been more fiercfor years. We had a terrible resurgence of violence. The homicide rate has gone up. Above 300 for the last four or five years. Theres been a sense of unraveling here. Corruption has had some some huge police corruption. Real failures of leadership. The city is very open about whats going on and how rough things have been. Whats so disheartening about the president s attack for people here in town is that he is using those tough conditions to stoke racial divide, score points instead of saying things are rough there, what can we do to help . Theres been no expression of help. Instead its just using the city to score some kind of points for the campaign apparently. Thank you. Good talking to you. Appreciate it. Thank you. Today marks a historic day for 9 11 First Responders as President Trump signed a long awaited bill ensuring that 9 11 victims Compensation Fund never runs out of money. The bill establishes money for the fund through 2092 which makes it permanent. The fund was initially created in the aftermath of 9 11 attacks and will continue to appropriate money to pay claims to any individual who suffered physical harm or was killed by the 9 11 attacks. The law comes at a critical time as many of these men and women now face steep medical bills related to illnesses sump as cancer linked to the aftermath of those terror attacks. Prior to the signing the fund has nearly run out sparking another wave of activism on capitol hill. Jon stewart last blasted lawmakers for requiring the act to be reauthorized which led to sick First Responders having to make multiple trips to washington, d. C. To lobby on their own behalf. This morning my colleague, Hallie Jackson was joined by 9 11 First Responders john field. Here is how he reacted to the end of this battle in washington. I know youre thinking of your friend luis alvarez and the many others who lost their fight. You know they were selfless men. Thats quite a fashion choice, my friend. Its fashion with statement. When we introduced the bill in february because the special master said the fund was running out of money. They were cutting claims, 50 to 70 depending on when one went into it and the fund would have expired in 2020, september 2020. In february we introduced it to make it permanent. One of the firefighters brought this coat and gave it to me. Its a heroes coat for my work on the Health Care Plan and for this bill. I said at the press conference i would not take it off until we pass the bill. It has been an incredible tool gain support for the bill. We had an astonishing over 335 cosponsors, bipartisan. Tp means hen it means tenfold to you. Absolutely. Its your friends and neighbors and many people you have worked with abdicated for the bill. Many are sick. Many have died. Im so glad we passed it so others will benefit for it. But i named the bill for three people who are important for passing the bill, the detective, ray pfeiffer, who literally testified up until the last day and Louis Alvarez who gave testimony a month ago that propelled congress forward. Im so glad other families wont have to do what they did, that they can spend their last days with loved ones. I want to talk about the hosting of the parade in Lower Manhattan to pay tribute to the 9 11 heroes. We had a tribute to a lot of great teams, most recently the womens soccer team, yankees, mets, giants, rangers. Why not the heroes of 9 11 . Best alltime star of all time was the 9 11 heroes and heroines and i would say the team got the bill through congress, it wasnt an easy thing, or many other bills we passed to establish monitoring, to make the case it was related to 9 11, to fund it and finally pass the james saturday roguia compensation bill and now Victims Compensation bill so they have the dignity and support of their health care and peace of mind that they have compensation for their families and for themselves when they can no longer work. In just a couple of hours the senate will try to override President Trumps veto of resolutions blocking more than 8 billion in arm sales to saudi arabia, uae and jordan. It does not appear like the senate will have the votes to do it. Lawmakers from both parties have squeed the United States relationship with saudi arabia. After the cia concluded the Saudi Crown Prince mohammad bin salman ordered the murder of u. S. Based columnist Jamal Khashoggi. A new investigation for nbcnews. Com and my first look coanchor and friend finds khashoggis murder was part of a much larger effort. And ayman joins me now. This reporting was incredible and very extensive. How long has this silencing of these dissidents, these activists, members of the royal family been going on . Its hard to pinpoint an exact starting date. There are some instances that go back decades of activists and other who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. But what weve seen in the timeline we have been able to piece together over the course of the last couple years is there is at least the coincidence an acceleration or intensity of attempts to silence activists and disdepartments and rogue royals 0 that coincides with the rise of mbs. So 2013, 2014 we see more and more of these cases where 234 some days we document they happen one day after the other. There was one incident where a woman was pick the off the streets and flown to saudi arabia and the next day another incident happened involving another individual, another saudi citizen in another country. The timing of these things seemed to have accelerated over the course of the last three, four years. If these people had not spoken out, would we have not found out about the extensiveness of this without the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi . Its safe to say they probably would not have gotten the attention and highlight of the International Press the way it has with the murder of khashoggi. Theres no doubt his murder galvanized many to look at other instances. At the same time you have a lot of companies, corporations, individuals reevaluating their relationship with saudi arabia. You see that really on display with the American Congress, just how quickly the American Congress pivoted from seeing saudi arabia as a pivotal ally to now members of the congress, some of them wanting to sanction the government of saudi arabia and prohibit arm sales. That would have been somewhat unheard of just a year and a half ago. There were people that spoke that made their identities clear that we know now the names of. One individual who was with the Saudi Royal Air force. Why did they feel comfortable speaking with you knowing their lives were not going to be at risk . In the particular case of this individual, he had left saudi arabia and hes taken up the cause of being a Human Rights Defender and activist. Hes started a Human Rights Organization in london. Hes built a network of activists and others inside the kingdom to try to document what is happening in terms of what he thinks are human rights abuses and violations. For him it was important to put his name, his face, his story to let the world know there are some some cases saudi citizens who disapprove of the country, what is happening inside, and dedicated their lives to pushing for genuine, meaningful reform. So in his case he fell emboldened enough at the front lines to come forward with his case. The vast majority we interviewed we are not at that place yet. It was an incredible piece and i saw the extensive reporting you did because im your coanchor every day. And we share an office. And we share an office. I know all of the work you put into it.
