Of people were in the home its about whether or not the president keeps his job. Oufoard with their celebrations. And senator kennedy is also correct when he notes that the a man stormed in with a large senators dont just play the knife and started slashing people at random. Here is a little bit more from a traditional role that jurors witness we spoke with earlier play deciding what facts the today. Evidence has proven. They also play an Important Role in determining what the take a listen. We just finished the candle procedure is and what the local Lighting Ceremony and we were standards are. But where i think he goes a heading into the synagogue for a little bit astray is in thinking meal. He came in with a big sword, that those rules are lindsay knife, machete. Graham. He pulled it out of the holder but really what has to happen and started wielding it at here is republicans need the people right and left. Votes of 51 senators to impose and then he ran into the dining these rules on the proceedings. Room. Then he went into the kitchen. And although they hold the majority of 53 votes in the senate, at least lisa murkowski, reporter and that was joseph possibly others, have expressed gluck, who was in this home at some misgivings about not having the time of the attack, and he a fair process in the senate. Actually responded really quickly because not only did he there are vulnerable republican try to stop the attacker, he was senators up for reelection. Actually able to write down the so ultimately mcconnell will license plate number of the have to be able to bring all of suspect as he got away. These senators who may have and that suspect was captured concerns on the margins along if about two hours after the attack theyre going to have this in harlem in manhattan, which is about an hour from where we are cramdown sort of a process that right now. And richard, you might notice he and senator grassley seem to there is no crime tape behind envision. I think the jury is still out on me. This is still very much an what the rules look like. Active investigation. And i guess the question we have local, state and federal might be, meredith, senator authorities looking at this kennedy softening the ground, if right now. Officials havent released a you will, for let Mitch Mcconnell make any decision he motive, but a lot of elected would like to do, its his game . Officials have called this a is that what senator kennedy form of hate, including governo might be doing . Certainly, and so far the directed the hate Crimes Task Force to also help with the rha needle really hasnt been moved in terms of any conversation kathy park with the very between schumer and mcconnell on latest for us in monsey, new laying out exactly what the york. Framework of this potential thank you so much. And well have more on the rise trial might look like, and of course until those sorts of of antisemitic hate groups and meetings happen we dont know crimes. Stick around for that. What could happen come s all we are also monitoring the latest developments of a shooting that left two people of those trying to think of how dead in fort worth, texas. It happened in the town of white long this process might take. Settlement, along with the two lets go to senator cruz. Deceased, a third person is said his reflection is about how many to be in critical condition. They also believe one of the republicans potentially might be dead could be the gunman. And right now there is no longer thinking twice about support of an active shooting threat. What Mitch Mcconnell seems to say is going to happen. Law enforcement is still trying lets take a listen to what he to determine a motive here. Said. This Church Shooting comes just based on what you know today, over two years after another do you expect any republicans to mass shooting in a texas church. Vote to impeach in the senate . That tragedy taking place in you know, i dont. It is certainly possible and there are a couple that could vote that way. Sutherland springs outside of san antonio. Were going to keep our eye on but i think anyone voting on the that as well. Facts, anyone voting on the law, we turn now to the president this is a very easy vote. And the developing news on the what they have alleged is not a senates impending impeachment high crime or misdemeanor. One of those couple might be here, jennifer, mitt romney, and trial, as they offered their takes on Nancy Pelosis todays tribune there in salt strategy. I think this is a sign of lake city had this headline. Weakness. I think shes been clear there will be a trial, so yes, she will be sending over the it read senator mitt romneys articles of impeachment. I think right now were engaged mission, trial first, verdict in this conversation about the afterwards. So maybe splitting the importance of being able to call difference here. What do you think here, witnesses. Jennifer . Yeah, i think that there is i dont know exactly when the trial will start. I really dont. Pressure on there are a few the trial will start in early senators who are either exerting january. I expect it to be very their own internal pressure and i think mitt romney is a perfect quickly done in january. Example of that, where he in maybe take up the whole month of announcing his decision to run january. Theyre going to be in misery. If i were running for president for senate more than a year ago and i had to sit there and everybody else was in iowa was talking about Holding President trump accountable and campaigning for the first in the has certainly still voted nation february 3rd caucuses, i with since hes been in would be nuts. Office since the beginning of well, the speaker continues this year, has voted with the president quite a lot. To delay delivering the articles but he does seem to be somebody of impeachment to the senate, the president is stirring the who really does want to have a pot, retweeting a post with the alleged name of the whistleblower that started the fair trial process and to really congressional investigation perhaps consider the facts. Leading to impeachment proceedings. But the morning after it was tweeted, that post disappeared from twitter. Senator murkowski is somebody an apparent glitch of the social else who has concerns about the media company. All of this against the backdrop process. And i would guess that there are of a congress that will remain more senators who have private on winter break for more than concerns but in public want to one week. Be seen as very much aligned with the president. Lets go to hans nichols, where and then when you see the president continuing to go after the president is finishing his speaker pelosi, tweeting the name of the whistleblower, all holiday vacation. And hans, with the president of those kinds of things, i retweeting the alleged name of the whistleblower. Think that there is for a lot of any response from the president or the administration on that . These senators a concern that reporter no, they let the even if they feel like the set of facts in this ukraine tweets speak for themselves and the president is now retweeting situation are in favor of the president , that theyre some of his earlier tweets concerned that politically there attacking House Speaker nancy will ultimately be some kind of pelosi. Earlier he called her crazy fallout from staying with him nancy, then he demanded an answer from her on whats down the line. Happening in terms of whats but again, i think that there going on in her district, in still is this huge sense for a terms of the homeless crisis. But as well this news report about her sons potential role lot of republicans that feel in ukraine. Richard, taking a step back, President Trump is the way to this sunday feels a lot like stay engaged with the base and get reelected. Last sunday where you had lets talk now about some lawmakers on the sunday talk show say that a deal was maybe wild cards here. Joyce, i want to start with you imminent and something was going on this one. To be worked out very shortly. Its the Nuclear Option. It was written in the hill. And the next day we had mitch it was an op ed that said there mcconnell and Chuck Schumer giving dueling versions indicating how far apart the two was a possibility that the of them were to have any sort of Senate Majority could, if they thought it was expedient and agreement on a trial. Strategic, they could have a the significant talks this procedural motion to adjourn the morning or the interviews was start of the trial until from steve scalise. November 4th, 2020, and in the number two house republican. Very close to the white house. And he was expressing essence, allow the American People to decide the president s frustration with House Speaker fate at the ballot box instead. Nancy pelosi for not sending over the articles. If, of course, Mitch Mcconnell all but demanding, daring her to thinks thats strategic. Send them over. That seems to be at odds with is this Nuclear Option possible the position of senator mitch here, joyce . Mcconnell, the majority leader, i dont think that well see who has talked about how he this happen. And one of the biggest clues doesnt want to take these up. That we have that it wont he has no interest in taking it happen is the fact that mitch up. So were seeing the beginnings mcconnell, who as you pointed of a republican split. You have some potential out early on, really never wanted to have a trial in the frustration with the president bubbling up through his twitter senate, has been forced to talk about one. Hes not even in a position now feed and congressman van holland of seeing as a realistic talking and hes in the camp that were eventually going to possibility having an immediate have a trial. But its not like he has any motion to dismiss as soon as the assurances from pelosi. Articles of impeachment are and then the big question is brought up in the senate. What does the trial actually and why is that . Thats because he knows he look like and joe kennedy doesnt have the magic number, excuse me, senator kennedy from he doesnt have 51 votes. Louisiana is quotable and heres wild card to you and you what he had to say about it. Probably thought the same here, when it comes to impeachment, meredith, and that is rudy the rule is that there are giuliani. And whether we will see him virtually no substti criminal t. Possibly giving testimony. But on top of that, he has the senate is not rea the presi inadvertently called you several times. You might tell us a little bit about that. Well, i wasnt expecting that tweet to take off the way it did. But i guess we can all relating to an accidental phone call. I had reached out to him because he was in palm beach with the president and i happened to be there covering him, and of course mr. Giuliani is known to have some frequent telephone troubles and he accidently called me quite a few times over the past holiday week. But in terms of mr. Giuliani wanting to participate, he said he wants to be there for all of this, but those in the west wing are loathe to have him get too involved with any of this. President trump on the other hand has sort of egged him on and said he supports him. He still views him in the vein of the new york city mayor, but mr. Giuliani is still very much wanting to be there for all of those. Quickly on this, joyce, the retweet of potentially the alleged whistleblower, does the president face any sort of legal ramification related to this . Well, certainly not while hes in office. But its now incumbent upon people like senator chuck grassley, longtime supporter of these very important whistleblower protections, to speak out against this to make sure the president doesnt do it again. The notion of this president being held accountable seems to be absolutely impossible at this point in his presidency. But violating whistleblower protections is serious, it has serious implications for the integrity of our government, because we so often depend upon these people to bring forward more mundane allegations of fraud and abuse than what weve seen with the whistleblower that lead to the impeachment proceedings. Thank you as always for coming in today. I appreciate you. Meredith and jennifer, well see you a little bit later. The you all three. With less than 40 days until the iowa caucuses, 2020 democratic president ial candidates are being pushed on one thing in particular here, the feasibility of the plans that they have been touting on the campaign trail. Senator Bernie Sanders was asked two different times just this weekend in New Hampshire about how his medicare for all plan would affect those who work in the health care industry. This is what he said. I work for a Health Insurance company. I have for my whole life. Thats what i know. Im 58 years old. Youre going to take away my job. I believe in you, i think this is im not going to take away your job. I need a new job. Yes, and thank you for raising that issue. I also work for a major Health Insurance company. So my question to you is, i work with thousands of really hardworking people, doctors, nurses, who try to make the best decisions we can under the guidelines that were given. So under medicare for all, what does our job look like . Are we unemployed . To answer your question, will there be dropoffs, yes, there will be. But we are putting into medicare for all what we call a Transitional Program that will help everybody in the industry to maintain their income, get the job training that they need to get another job. I think thats the fair and right thing to do. Well, those questions come the same week that the Washington Post crunched some of the numbers around this discussion and they found, quote, the major spending proposals of the leading democratic president ial candidates have tenyear costs ranging from about 4 trillion to more than 50 trillion, and for context the annual federal budget, its about 4. 5 trillion. The Washington Post also noting even the most sparse of the 2020 plans, they dwarf what successful democrats pushed before. For instance, as she seized the democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton posed a tenyear agenda that was about 4. 5 trillion. You do the math there, you can see the big difference. Joining us right now, nbc news political reporter Shaquille Brewster and nbc News Attorney raul rayes. It sounds like mayor Pete Buttigieg was also pressed today on the affordability of his proposals. All of the zeros behind the dollar sign. Reporter thats right, and it goes to show you this is not a question being presented to just the progressive candidates in the race, but also some of the more moderate candidates. Mayor pete is on the swing through iowa thats taking him through central iowa, some of the more candidates areas of the state. And he was having a town hall and a lady stood up and asked him, she said ive been studying your website, i know about your plans, but i have questions about the affordability element. Listen to that exchange. One of the things i dont see addressed is where youre going to pay for things, and also what youre thinking on the deficit. Yes, thank you for asking. Im glad youre looking at it. Because i believe its very important for candidates to explain how were going to pay for all the promises were making. Youre going to notice two things about the ideas im putting forward in this campaign. First, on the cost side, the things that im proposing are i5 big. Trillion over a decade, so but were also making sure we never make a promise we cant keep. Its why we figured out a insur that doesnt cost 20 or 40 or 1. 5 and still gets the job done. Reporter and you hear mayor pete there trying to thread the needle between the divide you hear among voters on the campaign trail. They like the big ideas going after medicare for all, college for all, green new deal, but also dont want to make it easier for President Trump to defeat a democratic candidate if it comes to the general election. So thats why you have the candidates trying to thread the needle, talking about how they have big ideas, but also are being controlled in terms of the costs. And when you look at the public option versus medicare for all and poll those who might be interested, raul, this to you, looking at some of the swing states, and this for instance is just overall, you can see that the support for the public option on the righthand side in terms of strongly or somewhat supporting is much larger, at least by percentage, across all the different parties than it is for medicare for all. And if youre trying to beat a and youre trying to get the votes, you might want to go for the public option, at least based on those numbers. Reporter for sure. But whether weve talking about a very moderate plan on health care or something closer to what elizabeth warren, what theyre proposing, there are important variables that no one has a clear idea about. And one is that a lot of the data that were relying on, particularly around the public option, that comes from 2009 during the debate over obamacare. So that data is ten years old. And we dont have very accurate data on how employers would act to Something Like the public option. So not only are the candidates trying to thread a needle, they themselves, in tmy view, their best guesstimate based on their projections. The hard data in terms of 2019, 2018 is just not there. And i also think that when they get these questions about the more into the weeds of how are they going to pay for these different proposals, one thing that i think that these Democratic Candidates have been missing over the last few weeks is to remind their potential democratic voters and also independents and republicans, that right now we have a lawsuit threatening the Affordable Care act thats under review. And the Affordable Care act is at risk. So in my view, each time the democrats get a question going to their health care proposals, they could remind their audiences that the republicans really have no option should we lose the Affordable Care act, and that is a very viable proposition. Talking about threading the needle, i want to play how andrew yang answered the question about medicare for all and the public option today on abc. Well take a listen to that. Im confused your ad is explicit. Your ad says medicare for all. Your plan is not medicare for all. Its not even medicare for some, because in your plan theres not even a public option. Our plan is to expand a universal Health Care System to all americans. Medicare for all is not the name of a bill. Medicare for all is universal health care for all americans. Medicare for all is medicare for all, right . Our Health Care Plan would be based on medicare and expanding it over time to more and more americans. You lower the eligibility age and then you make it widely accessible. So shaq, hes not the only candidate thats trying to draw that we start somewhere and get to another place. How are voters reacting to that y that listening to that exchange i can tell you if Bernie Sanders were to hear that, he would probably have a bill, as he always says on the campaign trail. And i asked him before, is there any medicare for all without eliminating private insurance . Is there a middle ground there . And flat out he says no, there is no middle ground. Its either you have full medicare for all where everyone has singlepayer health care or its some other proposal. So thats the divide you see among the candidates. Among voters it goes back to the idea of they just want someone who is going to defeat donald trump and there are voters who 100 want the medicare for all proposal. But a lot of them dont get into the weeds of it all. They want a candidate who is focused on defeating donald trump who is going to expand Health Insurance and thats their top priority right now, despite the particular details of each individual candidates plans. 15 seconds, raul. Shaq is absolutely right. Several polls, depending on how the question is asked, thats the number one issue for democrats and potential democratic voters, is who can defeat donald trump. Its not over agreement with policy positions and its not over health care, all these other contentious issues. Its a nominee who can win over donald trump. Shaquille brewster and raul rayes, thank you. After five people were stabbed at a rabbis home last night during hanukkah, well examine the rise in antisemitic hate crimes and what it says about the world we live in now. Hi im joan lunden. Now police are at the beginning of their investigation to a mass stabbing that happened last night at a Hanukkah Party inside a rabbis home in monsey, new york. Five people were wounded, including the rabbis son. Andrew cuomo is saying he considers it to be an act of domestic terrorism. The new York Police Department says its stepping up patrols in jewish neighborhoods across the city. Joining us, Justice Department reporter for the wall street journal and opinion editor at the seagull of the antidefamation league. What are you hearing in terms of the investigation related to this case . The latest is that theyre basically trying to learn a little more about the motivations, they are looking for any online presence, looking to see if he has any history of mental illness. But he was compaaptured when was captured, he was covered in blood so there was good indication that the police had the right person. So theyre trying to get a fuller picture of who this person is and what motivated him. One of the numbers that we looked at as were trying to understand the trend and i didnt expect to find this. This was one of your studies. That was on the number of hate tweets, if you will, antisemitic tweets that came out in one years time that the adl had evaluated. 4. 2 million english language antisemitic tweets. Anything with a million and hate attached to it seems like a big thing. It certainly sounds like a lot and we cant downplay the significance of that number. But when you look at the online ecosystem and the multiple different platforms and languages, increasing use of imagery outside of text, that number is actually quite small in comparison to how much antisemitic were seeing on line. Lets go back to the traffic really quickly here. When we look at it, it is trending up. Again, this is from january 2017 to january 2018. So were two years away from that timeframe. Theres definitely been a huge significant rise in antisemitic attacks. Not only are there more, but theyre more violent and targeting our orthodox brothers and sisters who are the most visible jews. Why . This is a question that a lot of people are struggling on. On the one hand, we cannot say that this is White Supremacy because a lot of these attacks are being perpetrated by people of color. On the other hand, the president does talk about conspiracy theories and were living in a conspiratorial time. Theyre affecting the right and the left. From the adl here, 1,879 antisemitic incidences in 2018, a dramatic increase in physical assaults, and a wave of robocalls, many incidents at k12 schools and College Campuses . So the last two years the antisemitic reported to adl have been second and third highest in the 40 years that weve been collecting that data. So its not insignificant. And when you look at k12 schools we saw a 90 increase in 2017. And so this is infecting people on all elements and all parts of society, whether its schools, whether its on the back of your phone, whether its in the public discussion, the rhetoric from politicians and others, thats why you need a holistic approach to come beat antisemitic. One of the conversations here that were not said before or the actual feeling has increased, how do you parse that, right . Well, i think that i mean, certainly Law Enforcement feels like this is an increasing problem and its something that weve been grappling with for years and i think one of the challenges, specifically is that like you mentioned, so many of these cases, including this one, blur the line between a hate crime and domestic terrorism. And unlike international terrorism, when you have a domestic case Law Enforcement feels it has fewer tools to be proactive in preventing an attack. So this is something thats frustrated the police and certainly the fbi and the Justice Department for a while. But definitely theres a perception in that world that things are increasing. And one of the questions, what are some of the steps to combat this, right . And one way is to bring out voices that are well known. Sasha had a key note address and this is what he said. I want to play a little bit of it. Hate crimes are surging as a murderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities. What do all these dangerous trends have in common . Im just a comedian, im not a scholar. But one thing is pretty clear to me. All this hate and violence is being facilitated by a handful of Internet Companies that amount to the greatest Propaganda Machine in history. Zuckerberg said that social Media Companies should live up to their responsibilities, but hes totally silent about what should happen when they dont. By now, its pretty clear they cannot be trusted to regulate themselves. As with the industrial revolution, its time for regulation and legislation to curb the greed of these hightech bare barons. Hes a prominent voice and adl has its recommendations. What might be done to combat this . Its going to be a holistic approach again. Theres so many Different Companies and they need to enforce their terms of services. Its not unreasonable for users, for people even who dont use their platforms to expect that they mitigate threats and stop hate on their platforms. I think the second part is to actually create a public who feels like they are em powered to do something about it. Whether you can flag it, speak out against it, use it against itself. And ill add to that, its very easy to call it antisemitic on the other side. We need to start calling it out on our side. Its older than the left and right divide. We have to Start Holding our friends and our own side accountable. Last ten seconds . This is something is Justice Department is working on and it, too, is taking a more holistic approach realizing that arresting people and trying to prevent these attacks takes a little bit more than prosecutions and arrests. Thank you all three, we appreciate the time on this important topic today. Coming up, President Trump fights to keep the evangelical part of his base and joe biden may smell some blood in the water. Cascade platinum. The Tech Industry is supposed in invention and progress. But only 11 of its executives are women, and the quit rate is twice as high for them. Heres a hack make sure theres bandwidth for everyone. The more you know. Welcome back. President trump celebrated christmas at a new church this year, attending a conservative baptist affiliated church instead of his regular church in palm beach in an effort to reach evangelical voters. This last weeks editorial from christianity today called for his removal from office and cited his immoral character. Evangelicals are debating supporting trump apresident tru . The reason is simple, says the article. Its his immigration policy. His views on immigration have always drawn support, but will it keep them through the 2020 election. Joining us columnist for the la times and the podcast, and Jennifer Epstein from Bloomberg News and meredith mcgraw. He got over 80 support of evangelicals in the 2016 election. Hes going to need them again in 2020. Yeah. But is immigration really the issue when we talk about white evangelicals and voting and why . Theres a little bit of blurring in the momentnomenclat. The number one indicator if you were going to vote for donald trump in 2006 tween 16 is if yo the mass depore patation. So they would sign onto that. Its not clear that they supported the wall. Its simply clear that he imagined a white nation, a White Nationalist identity. But there have been many things that have called into question trumps commitments, moral commitments, apart from immigration, and even in the case of some libertarians, that his wall is the right solution, whether or not theyre White Nationalists at heart. One last thing ill say is we call them evangelicals, in some studies theyre called christians as opposed to catholics. You just mentioned two churches, a baptist church. The one where the shooting was in texas is called a church of christ. Lots of evangelicals are separating themselves and referring to themselves as methodists as a way of separating themselves. Jennifer, when you look at the numbers in terms of support oi white evangelicals and immigration, its about a 20 percentage point gap between what is the average across the country. From your reporting, does that jive . Yeah, i mean, the country is obviously very divided on everything, it seems. And on immigration i think that there are also kind of multiple pieces of it i think that you saw the family separations last summer, or two summers ago at this point, were extremely unpopular across the board. At the beginning, anyway. And then kind of the Trump Administration leaned into that. You saw them become more favored by republicans, by evangelicals, and it seems to be kind of the linkage to President Trump. If President Trump says this is a conscious choice that he has made, they become supportive of it. And it all seems to be a bit entangled, where you have the political figure and you have these issues that are kind of self perpetuating together. And i think we would be remiss if we dont mention that another big issue for evangelicals is abortion, obviously, and the other issue is that they understand in a way that and Republican Voters in general understand that i think democrats have struggled to get home to their base the importance of the Supreme Court and holding judgeships across the country and that is the key to a big piece of the key, anyway, to making your view of the world law of the land. The president did not like the christianity today op ed, did not like the editorial here, certainly, meredith. And with the launching of evangelicals for trump or the effort coming in january, as you know so well, do they see that some evangelicals are peeling away . This is as what virginia was describing, selfseparating away from the monolith . President trump was seen evangelicals largely come around him, things like immigration, abortion, defending religious liberties in the way that he and Senate Republicans have transformed the federal judiciary. But the Trump Campaign and President Trump know that in 2020 in order to win, they need to secure this large block of voters, evangelicals make up a quarter of the electorate, and as we said before, 80 , over 80 voted for him in 2016. But those votes are going to be supercritical to him in swing states like florida. So its no surprise that this coalition is launching in florida, in a state that he needs to secure the support of in 2020. And the midwest. Midwestern firewalls was called during the obama years. Virginia, is there an opening here, because joe biden today also put out an op ed in religious news network. Ill read part of it. He said the scripture is clear, its not enough to wish the world were better, its our duty to make it so. And when my father would remind me theres no greater sin than the abuse of power, i knew you cant avoid the abuse of power, you have to stand up to end it whenever its found. Joe biden may be see seeing an opportunity to get folks to either not go out and vote when it comes to donald trump or to maybe vote for him. Yeah, donald trump does not want us to notice the level of dissent among christians and hes always telling us that if christianity today, which every evangelical i know subscribes to. It has a high degree of advisability. If some christian leaders come out against him, they dont matter. Ill just give you one number to suggest if not a quantity of dissent among evangelicals, the quality of dissent. Taylor college, a university, Taylor University in indiana had mike pence speak at last years commencement. This was widely protested. Lets imagine, lets just put this in context. Evangelical college, indiana where he was the former governor, you think the university regularly has people from the executive branch come to speak . They never did. This is like dick cheney speaking in wyoming to the nra and getting protested.
