From scripted prepared remarks. And when the president is off script, as you know, he time and time again complains that u. S. Allies dont spend enough on their own defense and hes also made clear that he sees little use for multinational organizations. So how should we pars, how should we digest when we heard from President Trump today . Reporter jeff, youre absolutely right. Hes been tough on naty, the organization and on nato allies for not contributing what he believes they should contribute to the organization. But, look, this day of all days was not a day for berating allies and President Trump did not. And he was on message. He had, as say sh as you say, a beautiful script and, he handles it well. Two because the other was from president macron and it was political and deeply thankful of americas role in liberating his nation. But for President Trump, he name checked countries and he name checked people and that was very diplomatic. He name checked france and the french resistance, that will have gone down very well here. He spoke of resilient britain, the fighting poles and above all personally he name checked the 60 or so veterans who sat behind him, some of them huddled up in blankets, in particular the one i picked out was a private russell picket, President Trump told the story of private picket who is in his mid90s and then asked him well didnt does, he led the applause, private picket tried to stand up, very labored. President trump went over to him and bent down and hugged him. This is not a president weve seen hugging very much. Hes not that kind of man. But it was a really, really touching moment and felt President Trump got it just right. And after that he said, you are among the greatest americans who will ever live. Youre the pride of our nation. The glory of our republic. And we thank you. So that was personal. He touched on the political. He did talk about nato indirectly saying to all of our friends and partners, our cherished alliance was forged in the heat of battle, tested in the trial of war and proven in the peace and our bond is unshakeable. That is as far as he went. President macron name checked nato directly and urged President Trump to live up to the spirit of normandy as he put it. The alliance of free peoples and the values of americas founding fathers. So name checking nato directly there from president macron. But a day when the ties that bind these oldest of allies, remember france and the United States are the oldest of allies, a day when those ties were strengthened, when President Trump did step up to the plate. But above all, it was a day when president s praised privates. Those extraordinary vets, most of them in the mid90s, who, as President Trump said, carried on their shoulders not just the pack of a soldier but the fate of the world. A really deeplymoving speech by the president and a very somber day of remembrance here at the American Cemetery overlooking omaha beach, the deadliest beach of the five normandy beaches on this day 75 years ago. Bill neely, always a keen observer of these things. Hans nichols there in limerick. Why is the president book ending his dday trip in ireland . Reporter well, geoff, we cant get to motive. I would point out that the president does have a Golf Property here. That hes indicated naft he wants to visit. It doesnt make obvious sense for a cart og raffer to be based in Western Island when you are visiting northern france but that is a decision the president made. Now trade is clearly on his mind. Hes the sixth u. S. President to visit ireland and he was at pains yesterday in that meeting with the Prime Minister to make nice, to compliment and talk about the strengths of the relationship from trade to tourism. However, there was a moment where the two appeared to be on a different page on this idea of a border here and when the president compared it to the u. S. Border with mexico. I just met some very good people that are very much involved with brexit as you know and i think that will all work out. It will all work out very well and also for you with your wall, your border. I mean, we have a border situation in the United States and you have one over here. But i hear it is going to work out very well. We want to avoid of course is the border wall between i think you do. The way it works now is good. You want to try and keep it that way. Now, geoff, on mexico, the president before he left, did say some progress was being made in the talks back in washington. The second day. But he also seemed to be picking a fight with his own senators in his own party and suggesting they simply doesnt get it and that the donald trump approach is better. Well see upon landing here in about an hour whether or not he continues to talk about trade and continues to bracket this ceremonial aspect of the trip with a lot of domestic politics on just what the president s going to do with tariffs. Geoff. Hans nichols and bill neely, thank you to both of you. And well talk more about the president s trip this hour, including a look at unity that came from dday versus the trend toward isolationism were seeing today. So far no deal between the Trump Administration and mexico to hold off the president s promised tariffs. The negotiations pick up again in just a few hours. With only five days left on the clock to come to some sort of agreement. Now if they dont, the escalating tariffs meant to punish amendment over Border Security will take effect. Lets go to kayla tousri and where are the negotiations today. Reporter it is a good sign when they keep talking but this is smaller Breakout Sessions policy focused at the staff level and drill into what the two sides want and whether they could broker a deal this week or potentially afterwards. That being said, the two negotiating positions as of yesterday were still pretty far apart and President Trump despite opposition from within his own party has repeatedly said he doesnt mind putting tariffs in place. He actually likes tariffs and thinks they are effective and repeated that again today in an interview on fox news. What must mexico do, what can they do to stem this massive tide, 140,000 people in may. When youre the piggy bank that everybody steals and robs from and they deef deceive you like theyve been doing for 25 years, tariffs are a beautiful thing. Reporter as to what mexico could do, the white house has asked mexico to reinforce the border with guatemala and now mexico is reportedly sending troops to that border. So that is a positive development. But the other two asks, geoff, are tougher. The white house wants mexico to support the policy of having migrants remain on the mexican side of the border while u. S. Judges process their immigration cases. And then the other ask is that the white house wants mexico, asked it before and asking it again, to accept designation as a safe third country. That means that migrants and asylum securities from Central America would be required to stay in mexico. Mexico would have to accept them. And instead of letting them pass through on to the United States. The mexico just this week called that a red line and well see if there is any movement there. And weve been reporting all week, since late last week about the pressure that outside groups and republicans are putting on the Trump Administration. How is that effecting these negotiations, if at all . Reporter well in the lead up to yesterdays muchheralded summit, both republicans and business groups had said we want to wait and see what the talks yield. If there could be a deal. And then yesterday when we got word there was no deal, crickets. Radio silence. I touched base with one of the business groups involved in a potential legal challenge to this earlier this morning and this group said, look, if the tariffs go into place on monday, then it is highly likely that you will see a lawsuit brought against the white house or against a specific individual involved in collecting these tariffs. But that being said, there are still several days before that deadline kicked in. Even though im told by Senior Administration official the operating assumption is that the 5 tariff will go into place and that they hope a deal before it becomes 10 . We appreciate you. To breaking news out of new york state. At least one west point cadet is dead and 20 others injured along with two soldiers after a military vehicle overturned near a training site thursday morning. A west point spokesperson tells nbc the vehicle crashed at a around 6 45 this morning, 50 miles north of new york city. What is not clear what caused the crash. We have a correspondent on the way to the scene and hope to hear from her live this hour. Right now, several democratic president ial candidates are in atlanta ahead of the first big debate in less than three weeks here on msnbc. You have beto orourke and mayor Pete Buttigieg. Theyll speak this afternoon at the africanamerican leadership summit cohosted by the Democratic National convention. And we just heard from senator cory booker taking on the president in a passionate speech. We are not going to win this election by fighting him on his turf in his terms. We are not going to win this election by showing the worst of who we are. Im here about the struggle. This is got to be a movement election. Because what i see particularly for africanamerican communities is unacceptable. Joining me now from atlanta is msnbc correspondent trymaine lee who has been talking to people there in the crowd. So what did folks think of senator bookers speech . Reporter ill tell you what, geoff, it was a year ago here in atlanta that dnc chair tom perez said the dnc had taken black voters for granted. Now cory booker is out here and asked him specifically, are the democrats doing enough to make sure they energize that very important black base. He said hes a walking example of energizing that base. I have here with me robin donaldson, a resident of atlanta. From what you heard today, do you have any more confidence that the democrats are focused onern earthizing black voters . Absolutely. Senator booker talked about the importance of a 50state strategy and people are showing up and investing on what is happening on the ground so i was definitely inspired and impressed by what they had to say this morning. Reporter what about the idea that cory booker said to fight donald trump you have to stand for something and does that resonate for you and is there a need to fight donald trump. You have to have a backbone but at the same time it is important to focus on what you do want and vote for and organize around the future of what you do want. Because it is so important that we look at issues around mass incarceration, that is one thing that senator booker did talk about. It is the moral issue of our time as well as Voter Protection and just making sure that all of the citizens, we all have an equal opportunity at this american dream. I also want to bring in keenly hawkins. What did democrats need to do to make up make sure they shore up the allimportant black voter base . I think people need to vote with their heart and look rat the issues and see what pulls them and moves them most and really focus on that and vote those important issues. That is whey plan to do. Reporter excellent. Thank you very much. Geoff, i spoke with dnc vice chair mike ral blake and said what do democrats have to do and he said it starts with eebts like this and reminding the voters why they are democrats in the first place and so they feel good about today and the crowd is excited, about 500 people registered for the event today. So far so good. I believe the reverend Jesse Jackson might be on stage right now. So far so good. But the message is, we are here, we need you, and we have to fight donald trump on our terms, not theirs. That is the word of cory booker. Trymaine lee, thank you for that report. We appreciate it. And well be following the democratic contenders on the road to miami for the first democratic debate of the 2020 election. It is only on msnbc, nbc and telemundo on june 26th and 27th. And well have much more on that forum ahead this hour. And ill be joined by one of the featured speakers, Atlanta Mayor kesha lance bottoms. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is making clear where she stands on impeachment. Politico reports in a closeddoored meeting she told her colleagues i dont want to see him impeached, i want to see him in prison. Nbc has not confirmed the words but so far 60 democrats, you see them there, 60 democrats have come out in support of starting impeachment proceedings. That is about a quarter of the entire caucus. Im joined now by jake sherman, Senior Writer for politico and an msnbc political contributor. And jake, as you well know, perhaps better than anybody, the tension among democrats have been building for weeks over the impeachment question so are we finally at a breaking point or close to a breaking point do you think . Reporter well the situation that Heather Cagle spoke about in the meeting was between the chairman of committees and pelosi and the chairmans are more forwardleaning, lets say, than pelosi who made the political calculation that impeachment is not a. , not proper at this moment and the support is not there, and b. , not wise politically and people could quibble with that. That is her judgment at this moment and she believes and what people around her tell us all of the time, they would lose the house and the presidency if they impeach donald trump. So every decision she makes is from that pivot point. I dont believe were at a breaking point at this moment. Pelosi is Holding Things together quite well, although the number is growing to 60 as you noted. But still overall, still a relatively small percentage of the house of representatives, but saying that the president should be in prison is really beyond what most anybody has said before and frankly shouldnt be taken lightly and then the next logical question is, if hes committed crimes that should be that should land him in prison, why arent you impeaching him and that is the question the democrats are asking . Absolutely. And i want to read something more from your colleague Heather Cagle reporting. She writes this, pelosi has long argued that certain conditions must be met before democrats begin impeachment. Public support and strong bipartisan backing neither of which have so far materialized. Now public support is one thing but what about the strong bipartisan backing because that caught my eye, if that is her threshold, her caucus could be stuck in the stalemate until the next election because republicans have made it clear it is not in their interest to hold this president to account. Reporter shes not giving broad bipartisan backing on impeachment from republicans. There is only one republican so far, justin amash of michigan, who said he is willing to hold impeachment proceedings. He wants to hold impeachment proceedings. Not one Senate Republican has even opened the door to impeachment proceedings. And when pelosi said that for the drs the fir time the colleagues saw that to avoid impeachment and there will not be bipartisan support but amash did give them the veneer of bipartisanship and that is the part of the problem pelosi is trying to explain to colleagues. If we impeach him, the senate will vindicate him and they believe that is dangerous. And woe be immunized to oversight if he does win a second term. That is a good point. And so impeachment, if it were to move forward, it would start in the house Judiciary Committee. And the house Speaker Nancy Pelosi and jerry nadler who chairs the committee, theyve been on the same page for the most part about impeachment. But take a look at how he answered a question about this last night. Are you, mr. Chairman, feeling any pressure from your members to at least open an impeachment inquiry . Well, the question let me put it this way. It may come to that. It may welcome to a formal impeachment inquiry. Well see. He said it may come to that. Is he trying to tread water here . What are you watching for in terms of the dynamic between the two leaders in the coming weeks . Reporter you hit the nail on the head. The dynamic is incredibly important and it is incredibly fraught at the moment. Every time nadler seems to take a little bit of a step forward, hes yanked back by pelosi behind the scenes in meetings and told to get on the same page and literally he reades from a he reads from a script when talking about pelosi. He has in the past and weve seen it on tv. What we have to watch for is nancy pelosi because it is clear that nadler is not under the control of pelosi but certainly looking for her lead, looking for what shes going to do. So all eyes are going to remain on nancy pelosi as we go forward. Jerry nadler is important to watch. He really does indicate the temperature of his Judiciary Committee which is progressive and frankly i think half of the committee has said theyre open to impeachment proceedings but this is all about nancy pelosi. Jake sherman, thanks for helping us make sense of this. And stay with us for the next hour on msnbc for Andrea Mitchell exclusive interview with Speaker Pelosi in normandy. Coming up, more on the 75th anniversary of one of the most consequential days in our history. Dday. As we remember the International Alliance that helped win world war ii. Before a group of about 60 surviving dday veterans, President Trump and other World Leaders remembered their service and their sacrifice of the 160,000 allied troops who took part on the invasion on june 6th, 1944. There were the british whose nobody ilt and fortitude saw them through the worst of dunkirk and the london blitz. There were the canadians and the pieting polls, the tough norwegians and the intrepid ozzys. There were the galant french commandos, finally there were the americans. Before the war many had never ventured beyond their own community. Now they had come to offer their lives, half a world from home. Lets bring in retired four star general Barry Mccaffrey and military analyst and president ial historian michael besh and jane hartley former u. S. Ambassador to france under former president obama. And michael, i want to start for you with the big picture view. We hear talk about global effort, we hear words and phrases like unity and sacrifice for the common good. Has the world lost that sense of coming together for a for a common good, do you think . Well, it certainly is very different from 1944. But it is even different from the times when earlier president s came to celebrate dday. Jimmy carter did. Ronald reagan did most famously and other president s later on. They would give speeches here, geoff, at this event and it would seem like boilerplate because they would talk about the heroism of the vets as they absolutely should have. And they would also talk about the postwar institutions that came out of world war ii like nato, the western alliance, that preserve the peace ever since. The interesting thing today was that before President Trump spoke, people were wondering whether he would do the latter. They knew he would talk about the vets and he sure did. With Great Respect this morning. But what he really did not do very much is talk about what the purpose was of world war ii. There were about four sentences, he talked about the alliance being unbreakable and our cherished allies but without the four sentences, not much. Ambassador hardly, to michaels point, the Washington Post notes in its own coverage, trump campaigned in 2016 on an America First platform largely at odds with many elements of the transatlantic alliance. He sat with his arms crossed as macron gave a speech of multilateralism and including praise for nato, the u. N. And the European Union so todays trend toward isolationism or nationalism, what threat does that present to democracies around the world. It presents a huge threat. If you look at what happened on dday, it was 12 countries who got together to fight for freedom. I was ambassador and participated in dday twice. And the emotion and the pride and the gratitude you felt for these young boys from all of the countries that came over to fight for value, to fight for freedom. But it was us together. And actually when you drove to normandy on dday, you would drive through the countryside of france and there would be american and french flags in all of the window boxes. Because the public in france still remembers. And they remember what america did and they remember how we fought sidebyside. Sadly i think with this administration a lot of that is lost. General mccaffrey, were in the middle of a generational shift here. Many of the veterans were teenagers, in fact, on dday and now many of them are older than 90. What lesson should we be taking from these incredible heroes before they move from living memory into history, before they pass away . Well, you know, it is good to remind ourselves periodically that the United States has played a crucial role in essentially saving civilization twice, both in world war i where we put 2 million troops in france and had 2 million more coming by the end of the war. And in world war ii where except for the brave brits, everyone else had floorly succumbed had nearly succumbed to the forces. So the United States has been a Global Leader since 1917 for sure. And a lot of good has come from this. Not just our own national security. But really stabilizing democracy throughout the world. A lot of this is now in question. The russians are a much diminished threat to the west. There is no question about it. And President Trump notwithstanding is very commendable and sincere speech this morning did not, has not embraced the alliances that have been the linchpin of u. S. National security. So it is a good argument weve gotten increasingly in trouble in the last two years. And there is always the split screen effect with President Trump when hes overseas. There is the teleprompter trump and then there is twitter trump. He said the right thing when it is written for him but then goes off script and says what he really thinking and the reason i bring that up because the president gave an interview with fox news and he was asked if special Counsel Robert Mueller should testify and here is what he said. He made such a fool out of himself the last time because what people dont report is the letter he had to do to straighten out his testimony. Because his testimony was wrong. But nancy pelosi, i call her nervous nancy, nancy pelosi doesnt talk about it. Nancy pelosi is a disaster. Okay. Shes a disaster. And let her do what she wants. You know what, i think theyre in big trouble. Comments like that. With the American Cemetery in normandy there behind him. How does that make you feel . Embarrassed, frankly. If anybody has been to that American Cemetery, you look at that American Cemetery and you see the sacrifice of so many people, families that have lost one, two, three sons. It is hugely emotional. And to go there when were supposed to be honoring these amazing young men and women that saved our country and saved the world and talk about politics, i think it is ridiculous. Michael besh, i want to read for you something that you wrote a few years ago about president eisenhower. You wrote this, eisenhower did not visit normandy or stage a white house ceremony to extol his own leadership. Selfcelebration was mostly alien to the men and women of world war ii greatest generation started with the supreme commander. And so as we end this segment, the big question to you, is that lack of selfaggrandizement, is that a thing of the past when it comes to our leaders . I sure hope it is not. And the eisenhower case is so interesting, he was president in 1954 on the 10th anniversary of dday. The first big anniversary. Had he been a different person, he might have run to normandy and said wasnt i a great hero, on dday and he was and extol himself. Instead he said this day is about the heroes of dday, not me. He basically shut himself away at camp david and was silent. And when eisenhower in public a number of times when the subject came up of the heroism on dday, there was one famous occasion, 1952, where he took a a hanker chief and covered his face because he was on the verge of weeping. Until the end of his life he knew how important dday was and it was probably perhaps the most important day of the 20th century. It maybe meant the survival of freedom, but at the same time he never lost the feeling that he was responsible for the loss of many lives that had been lost because of his decisions. I think that is much more in the american character and it goes very much back to George Washington who i think would have felt the same way. Michael besh, general Barry Mccaffrey and jane hartley, my thanks to each of you for your insights today. Thank you. President trumps older sons donald jr. And eric had a night on the town in ireland. They took part in their own pub crawl in the village of dunnberg dishing out free pints of guinness. Kelly cobiella is in island and spoke to the land board of one of the pubs and there are folks back here in the states who say that the two trumps should not have been on this trip since they dont have an official Government Role but what are people there telling you . Reporter well, geoff, this is really a protest free zone here in this part of western ireland and the reason why is just over that bridge and up the road is the Trump International golf resort and it is a huge boon to the local economy and owned by the trump family now since 2014. Back then it was at risk of closing and that would have had a massive impact on this very small town. So they dressed up this town and really this area in american flags and they are welcoming and thankful for the impact that golf course and the family had on the economy here and last night eric and donald trump jr. Came to town, walked down main street, posed for selfies, shook childrens and adults hands and bought drinks for locals to express the thanks for the local support here. Here is what one of the local pub owners had to say about the big party. It was very nice, last night they came in afterwards and took a photograph with my whole family and my wife and my children and my grandkids. We had traditional irish music and local dancers so they have a great time. What are they like in person . Well to be honest with you, theyre down to earth people. Reporter so really a lot of, as i said, support for the family here. They were hoping to have a visit from now President Trump. Theyre not quite sure that is going to happen. But they say it would just top off the week. This golf course brought about 300 jobs, Something Like 80 million to the regional economy last year alone. So it does have a significant impact. We asked about politics with some of the people in town and they said, you know what, we dont focus on the administrations politics, what we focus on is the good that they brought to this town and the prospect, frankly, that now that mr. Trump is President Trump, the town will be put on the map, theyre shining the spotlight on this small town once again. Nbcs kelly cobiella, thank you for that report. Well be following the democratic contenders on the road to miami for the first democratic debate of the 2020 election. Only on msnbc and nbc and telemundo on june 26th and 27th. Now a handful of them are already in atlanta right now speaking directly to voters at the africanamerican leadership summit cohosted by the Democratic National convention and joining me now is Atlanta MayorKeisha Lance Bottoms also a speaker at todays summit. And mayor bottoms, what do you think that the candidates should say at this forum . What do people there want to hear from the 2020 contenders . Thank you for having me. I think what people want to hear is how we take our country back in 2020. And i think that it really is representative of who we are as a nation. We are a Diverse Group of people with diverse backgrounds. It wasnt lost on me when i went into the hotel this morning that that was the same hotel that my grandfather used to haul trash out of the back door and to walk into that hotel as a 60th mayor of atlanta and see the representation of Democratic Leaders, africanamerican leaders across this country is really what our work is all about. It is about making sure that we all have an opportunity, that we bring our diverse backgrounds to the table and that we represent we truly represent this country. And georgia doesnt always get the same treatment as early voting states. But democratic candidates, theyre making trips there earlier and way more often than in past president ial cycles. What accounts for that . I think that people are finally realizing that georgia is in play. Georgia has been trending blue for quite sometime and i think that when you look at our last election, when you think you look at the election for governor and you see how close Stacey Abrams came to actually becoming governor of this state, think that it has been a wakeup call for democrats and even republicans across this nation that there is a true opportunity for georgia to go blue. And im glad that people are now putting the work in on the ground to make sure that that happens. Let me ask you about Stacey Abrams, georgias own Stacey Abrams. She lost the government race because she said shes ruling out a senate run because shes focused on winning an executive level seat at the state or perhaps even the federal level if she decides to run for president. But do you or other Party Leaders in georgia think that she should run for a senate seat at the very least for the good of the party . I think that we all have to make our own decisions. And i cant begin to speak for what her decisionmaking is. I know shell do what she thinks is best for herself. But i think the reality is that suppression is real. But more importantly, we cant stay home and we cant rely on thin margins. We have to get more people registered to vote. We have to actually turn out more people to vote. Because when you rely on thin margins, then there is always going to be a question on what could have happened, but we have to put the work in and people have to recognize that elections matter. When you look at the the thin margin of the last president ial election, and you look at where our country is now, it matters. My race for mayor in atlanta almost 100,000 votes cast, 832 votes made the difference. And so i think if we continue to register more people and turn out more people to vote, then i think youll clearly see that georgia is blue again. Point well taken because you did have a hardfought win there in atlanta. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, thank you for your time this morning. Thank you for having me. I want to bring in eddie glod, Princeton University center and chairman for the center of africanamerican studies. And here is the thing. Former congressman beto orourke and Pete Buttigieg scheduling meeting with Stacey Abrams and many think it is a attempt to reach out to black voters and that strikes me as outdated form of politics because if they want to reach out, they should talk to black folks and focus on the issues. What is your take. It makes sense that beto is talking to Stacey Abrams after he rolled out his own plan of voter access. It makes sense that mayor pete would want to talk with Stacey Abrams given his own attempt to expand his outreach into black communities. But youre absolutely right, geoff, if theyre going to do this, they have to go directly to black voters and they have to talk more about substantive policy issues and criminal Justice Reform and talk about health care and education. Theyll have to talk about jobs. And theyre go to have to talk about it in ways that are specific to black communities. So it is not enough to have a photo on with someone like Stacey Abrams or reverend al sharpton, you have to put forward policy and plans and agenda, a vision that will speak to black communities and speak to, in some ways, the broader crisis in the country. And here we are less than three weeks away before the first democratic president ial debate and joe biden, the former Vice President , hes catching it from all directions, at the moment the continued support of Hyde Amendment when bans federal funds for most Abortion Services and in some ways it is expected he would have this incoming given hes the frontrunner but what do you think is the impact on his race . Well, i think we have to always be mindful that there is a deep idealogical debate happening within the Democratic Party right now. We saw it in 2016 with regards to Hillary Clintons candidacy and some believe that that debate, that fissure led to the election of donald trump. But we do know the rejection of clintonism is a part of that debate. And so biden in some ways represents that current. Even with his association with president obama. So just as Hillary Clinton caught hell for her position around criminal Justice Reform, just as she caught hell with regard to her position on welfare, quote unquote welfare reform or talk about super predators, joe biden is going to be held to account. So not only with regard to the Hyde Amendment but the way in which he supported the crime bill, his position with regards to credit card companies, the way he has been in some ways how can we say it, not so much a corporate democrat but someone who is cozy with corporate democrats. So this is part of that debate. It is going to happen. It is going to happen. We cant push it under the table simply because we all want donald trump to get out of office. Something bigger is happening in the country. And were going to see it in the debates around joe bidens candidacy. My friend the esteemed professor, thank you for your time. We appreciate it.
