Unpack. An nbc news exclusive. Vice president pence leaps to the defense of President Trumps response, to the violence in charlottesville. I take issue with the fact that many in the media are spending more time criticizing how the president addressed the issue in just one hour, the man accused of intentionally ramming his car into activists, into protesters, kills one of them, appears in court for the first time. Those who knew that young woman best. They want the world to know exactly what we lost. Im trying to honor my daughter the way that i know she would want to be honored. And republicans and ceos distance themselves from the white house. These groups seem to believe they have a friend in donald trump in the white house. We of got to move this morning with President Trump heading back to the white house any minute now. According to the attorney general, we are expecting him to take another shot at addressing the weekends violence at some point today. This comes after he was highly criticized by members of both parties for failing to directly condemn. White supremacists. We have a great team here to break it all down. There is so much to unpack beginning with Nbcs Kristen Welker in bridgewater, new jersey, just down the street from the president s golf resort. Kristen, what is the white house saying now about the weekends events . We wait for the president to say more and still he doesnt. They are saying that it is likely we will hear more from President Trump today about this but youre sloift right, the bottom line is there is mounting pressure on him to explicitly and forcefully denounce white supremacist groups to call them out by name, something that he failed to do over the weekend, which sparked a fierce backlash from democrats and republicans who are now unified in saying his response fell flat and it fell flat in terms of his leadership responsibilities. Our own Peter Alexander is traveling with the Vice President in cartagena, colombia, and he pressed him on the president s lack of a strong response. Heres how the Vice President responded this morning. Take a listen. We condemn in the strongest terms the hate and violence advocated by groups like White Supremacists, neonazis and their ilk. Thats one side. Whats the over side when he says on many sides . As you look throughout the course of recent years, we of seen protests turn violent. We of seen Fringe Groups use peaceful protests to bring violence in some cases against Police Officers. With respect, one yesterday killed an american. And were bringing the full weight of the federal government to bear on investigating and prosecuting that individual. Now, important to point out that ivanka trump over the weekend did tweet out that White Supremacists are at the root of this. She called them out, called out neonazis and the white house issued a followup statement to President Trumps initial statement saying that the president does in fact p denounce White Supremacists and neonazis. But a lot of people want to hear those words coming out of President Trumps mouth, and he doesnt done that. And there is fresh fallout right now, steph, the president of merck saying that he is withdrawing in the president s jobs council e. This is a statement from kenneth frazier. He says im resigning from the president s American Manufacturing council. Our country stems from diversity and the contributions made by men and women of different faiths, races, sexual orientations, and political beliefs. Americas leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry, and group supremacy. The president firing back just moments ago on twitter saying now that ken frazier of merck pharma has resigned from president S Manufacturing council, he will have more time to lower ripoff drug prices. So the president choosing to engage with the ceo of merck, but we still havent heard from him again on those violent clashes that were in virginia over the weekend. The president is expected to meet with his attorney general and the fbi director later today to get briefed on the investigation, steph. Extraordinary. The president goes after the ceo of merck. We of soon him go after jeff sessions, seen him go after mitch mcconnell, and yet he still does not go afterneonazis. I want to take moment to explain the backdrop for all of this. As the weekend began nationalists, White Nationalist groups, in 2017, including White Supremacists, the kkk, and neonazis marched through charlottesville, virginia weather torches, protesting the removal of a statue of robert e. Lee. Saturday when they showed up at a park for a protest, antiracism activists were there. Angry words quickly escalated into fighting. As of last night, three people had been arrested. Then just a few how shalls later the situation turned deadly and we should warn you, this video is disturbing. As activists peace marched just a few blocks from the park, a man intentionally drove his car into the crowd, mowing down people, then backing up, hitting even more. At least 19 people ended up going to the hospital. And 32yearold hieather heyer, who had been walking with friends, was tragically killed. James field was arrested and charged with seconddegree murder. Hell appear in court in less than one mile an hour. Nbcs justice correspondent Pete Williams has more on that. Pete, what exactly are we calling all of this . Domestic hate crimes . Domestic terrorism . What was this . Its certainly being investigated by federal authorities as hate crime. He faces murder charges in virginia and we of sove seen t pattern before here where you have local authorities pursuing their own charges and the federal government doing a civil rights investigation. So youll have two parallel investigations going on here. The feds will look, of course, at motive although for the virginia authorities the motive isnt as important as the fact of what happened. Thats what led to the seconddegree murder charges that well hell face. In an hour hell appear by Video Conference in a local virginia courtroom in just a little while, be, the federal authorities will do their civil rights investigation. Fields is 20 years old. He was born in kentucky. He moved with his mother to maumee, ohio, a suburb of toledo, earlier last year, and then he moved out of his mothers house about six months ago. He told his mother he was going to drive charlottesville. She says she had no idea that he was going to be involved in anything violent. She thought it was some sort of a rally to support the president. So she said he didnt arrive this with intent to do this. And thats one of the questions for investigators, steph. Theyll look at whether this was planned in advance or whether this is just something that boiled up inside of him and he decided to d this on the spur of the moment. Theyll also look at if it was planned, whether other people were involved in helping him plan it, steph. Put that into perspective, what this mother thought he was going there for, a trump ral lish rally, and this was the result. Hours after the rally, numerous protests were held saturday and sunday, peace demonstrators from new york, l. A. , and other major cities across the country gathered together to reject White Nationalist ideologies and remember hetd eHeather Heyer, w killed in charlottesville. For more on her story, maya, charlottesville, virginia, that is city, a town, home of uva, considered a national treasure, a beautiful place, and this young woman loved by her community. Reporter and she was from here. For all intents and purposes, Heather Heyer was a local. She wnt to an area high school. She was a paralegal here in charlottesville, and this is where she died. Were at the intersection of 4th and water streets, and as you can see, they have set up a makeshift memorial here. People have been leaving candles and flowers. You see her picture there. They of been doing this all weekend long. People writing messages on the street here, messages of love and peace. There was supposed to be a formal vigil last night at uva but it was canceled because of a credible threat according to organizers. They did not go into what the threat was. In an exclusive interview, health ears mother talked about her love for her daughter and how shes trying to cope with this loss. Im very sad, im very, very sad, but i cant be angry because angry will make me hate, and hate only leads to more hate. And theres just no point to that. Heather wouldnt have wanted that either. She would have said why hate, what does that accomplish, what would that do for anybody . Reporter now, in her last facebook post, which is dated november of 2016, heather wrote, if youre not outraged, youre not paying attention. In the incident that ended up killing heather, 19 other people were injured. Local hospital that was treating all those people who were injured say ten are in Good Condition and the rest have been discharged. Stephanie . Heather heyer lost her life while standing up for what she believes in. Thank you. I want to break down what stands out for me, the question i want answered. Stay with me here. President trump questioned the legitimacy of the first black president. He very much avoided on the campaign, denouncing david duke, and he made Stephen Bannon a public champion for the altright, a senior white house aide along with sebastian gorka, stephen miller. He pushed racial buttons during his campaign. On saturday he went off script and referenced many sides. All of that continuing to do just that, pushing those racial put on thes, so much so that david duke and others took the president s comments as showing support for them. And if that is not his goal, then it is the president s opportunity now, today, to clear that up. I want to bring in my panel to help me understand all of this. Msnbc political analyst and former rnc chairman, Michael Steele, and former democratic congresswoman Donna Edwards, senior fellow at the Brennan Center for justice. Thats a lot to unpack. It is. Michael, we talked about what the president did say, but in all fairness we should share his own words and some of what he did. We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides, on many sides. Why . Honest to goodness. Im not talking about deplorable americans. Good, honest americans who voted for President Trump, and those who didnt, across the country, neonazis do not represent what america does. Why wouldnt he denounce it . Its nobrainer. It is a nobrainer but it is part of a continuing narrative for this president that hes always sizing up how to keep his audience in play. And as you saw from the reaction from duke and others out there, they took what he said, that many other sides, those many sides, as sort of a way to go, okay, yeah, its all good. Were all right. Youre all right. And thats unfortunate. I think along with a lot of other republicans the president missed an enormously important opportunity. Its one thing as a candidate, okay, weve got that, we know what campaigns are like and what they do. Now youre in the office and the mantle of response that comes with that has to change your behavior. It has to change the way you look at these things. Now you how you look at the country. Were not living in this sort of reality tv fantasy land. These this neonazi idiots are real. They killed someone. Idiots is an understatement, michael. It is. I could have said wrestling in the back seat. If you want me to, isle g there. Look, this is cable, isle go there. Lets go with idiots because its the nicest, politist thing i can say at the moment. But the president giving them cushion, giving them comfort whether he meant to or not i think is part of the problem this administration has in communicating exactly where this president is on matters of race. Heres the thing. I mean, from birtherism to candidate trump refusing to for a long time disavow the kkk to now giving license and emboldening the kkk, neonazis, White Supremacists, White Nationalists, and to having represent tich atives of those factions in his white house, this president hasnt changed, and theres almost nothing the president can say today to erase what has happened over the last 48 hours. But im going the tell you, he needs to make some kind of a strong statement and it doesnt need to come from ivanka and pence and mcmaster and everybody around him. It needs to come frp the lips of the president of the United States. Then lets share what mike pence had to say. Take a look. Oh, excuse me. We have republican Corey Gardner from the state of colorado. Well share with he said. This isnt a time for. Anything to be read between the lines. This is a time to lay blame on bigotry, on white supremacist, on White Nationalism and on hatred. Off republican coming out of there. This isnt a surprise. President trump has no problem fighting with the gop. But even mike pence turned and said how the media is representing this. Is mike pence taking the wrong turn here . Mike pence is covering his man. Hes the number two. Hes not going to stray off that script. He just isnt. Thats unfortunate. But thats the reality of the politics. I think other republicans, you know, out there like cory guarder in and Lindsey Graham are saying what needs to be said. The congressman is right. The words have to come from the president s lips in order for us to take it seriously and to say he has turned the page and now recognizes the full responsibility and weight that he carries for all of us when it comes to dealing with this issue. Because there is no soft peddling this. There is no shaving off. There is no many sides. Theres one side here. It is the people who have hate in their heart and express that hate by killing someone this past weekend. And they killed Heather Heyer died in the name of the president of the United States. David duke said it himself. The president , were doing this on behalf of President Trump. He is our president. And so only the president can stiff arm these people and he needs to get them out of the white house and he needs to say to the American People there are not many sides, i stand on the side of the overwhelming majority of the American Public this and the kkk neonazis, White Supremacists, White Nationalists are somebody else. Does this become a worse problem for the president . Until now many said its dog whistle, or he didnt clearly denounce david duke, but to donnas point, Heather Heyer died on President Trumps watch when all of this happened and youve got david duke out there after the fact say, see, hes our guy. Does President Trump look even worse now . Does this put him in a worse position . I think it does. I think the president , despite the fact that he and maybe some around him think that he doesnt have any tank coming off of this, that there is no need for him to get any deeper into this, that hes wholly agnostic on race, the fact is this happened on your watch. These racist, ugly incidents were stoked through your campaign, and you gave license to, voice to the very same people that for a generation we of been fighting against the david dukes of the world, and now they feel emboldened and empowered. Heres the to other problem. The problem is a political one for the republican party, because this taint is on your house too. So thats why its important for cory and others to stand up and say, wait a minute, this aint us. This is not us. We need create lot of room and a lot of separation here political i but most importantly for the American People to understand where this administration is when it comes to dealing with race in this country. For the gop, this is their guy, what about the white house . We spent the last two weeks talking about the turning of the white house. General kelly was there. General kelly was there this weekend. Theres no turning when the president of the United States on his own script cannot call out by name White Supremacists. Call out the kkk. Call out neonazis. The bright line here tx president feels free to call out everybody else, as you pointed out, stephanie, but he cant call this by name. That is a problem. And the problem didnt just happen over the weekend. The problem happened during the course of the campaign. When he knew that he was wrapping himself around these people who were part of his base in order to win an election, and that is at the foot of the republican party. And i know some of them are trying to distance themselves right now, but theres to only so much distance that you can create between yourself and the president of the United States who sits in the oval office under a gop mantle who cannot call racism out by name. Here we are eight months in and were covering domestic terrorism again. Were going the take a break. Next, much more on the violence in virginia over the weekend. A reporter there covering the protests became involved when she got attacked. Shes going the share exactly what happened to her as a journalist in charlottesville. Stay with us. The driver behind that deadly car attack in charlottesville, virginia, over the weekend is set to appear in court for the first time in about 40 minutes. One reporter filming the immediate aftermath of that deadly car attack found herself as target when a man approached her and punched her if the face. Stop recording that happened just two days ago. Joining me now, the reporter who was attacked, the hills taylor lorenz. First, how are you . Good. Yeah. What exactly happened . For those of us watching this weekend, the image, it felt like movie. It certainly didnt feel like 2017 charlottesville, virginia, home of the uva cavaliers. You tell me, what happened . Sure. This was my first time in charlottesville but not my first protest by any means. It did feel different than other ones. The tensions were high. There were these two competing groups that sort of were both focused very much on each other rather than their message to sort of like the broader i guess public. I feel like lot of other marches people just kind of go, they say their piece, and maybe theyre heckled a little bit but theyre not sort of clashing i guess to the same extent. So, yeah, i got there on saturday. I mussed the friday night with the torches and stuff pip got there on saturday morning. The protest had already it was supposed to begin at noon and it had already obviously escalated, you know, sides fighting with each other. You saw that car crash. Yeah. So, yes, i was with the counterprotesters as they were marching through streets. It was a pretty jubilant mood. They definitely felt like a sense of victory, and they were marching towards back sort of into town. Did it feel violent . Yeah. I mean, the the car crash was obviously an act of violence, and, you know, it was in that moment it definitely felt like the aftermath of that attack felt very, you know it felt like, you know, i dont know because i of never covered anything specifically that violent before, but there were injured people all over so it did feel you were an injured person. Jacob smith, this 21yearold man whos now been charged with misdemeanor assault, how did you get punched in the face . Why . Im hesitant to comment on his motives because i dont know and didnt obviously talk to him except immediately following the attack when i was calling the police, trying to have him taken into custody, but there were several you know, right after the car hit people, there were a lot of people trying to call for medics, find first responders, you know, get in touch with anyone who could help and there were people like me, journalists, filming. So there were several people who were, you know, taking issue with that. They were swatting cameras out of peoples hand. They were yelling at people, you know, saying to stop filming. So i dont know why they wanted people to stop filming. Some people suggested they themselves didnt want to be on camera. This man had asked me to stop filming, i showed him my kre didntial, said i was a reporter, and when i didnt stop he struck me and my phone and attempted to prevent me from filming. Anything further. And immediately after that happened i called for police. I walked with him around you know, i followed him and told a Police Officer and they came and took him into custody. These are extraordinary times. Im glad to know youre safe. Yeah. Yeah. This is unbelievable. We have to take a break. Next, how did the situation in charlottesville get so out of control . Was this a failure of police or are tensions in this country beginning to boil over so much that this is where we are . This this this this is my body of proof. This afternoon, the president is expected to sign a memo addressing chinas law and policies surrounding interelectric chul property. Two american soldiers were killed an five injured in iraq on sunday onin a noncombat incident. According to a statement, they were testing artillery when one of the shells exploded p a Hacker Group Anonymous has reportedly taken over the neonazi and white supremacist website the daily stormer in response to the violence in virginia over the weekend. We now have have our seventh named storm of the hurricane season, Tropical Storm gert formed over the weekend and will likely become a category 1 hurricane over the next few days. It will pass in between the outer banks and bermuda before heading out to sea. Now back to a city in pain, charlottesville, grappling with questions of security and free speech after this weekends protests turned into deadly violence. Joining me now, former prosecutor and civil rights attorney seema ire, reverend al sharpton, president of the National Action network, and host of msnbcs politics nation, and host of news one now, roland martin. Reverend al, i want to start with you. Between 2001 and now, we have seen three times more deaths caused by rightwing extremists than islamic terrorists. Knowing that and knowing that this event was taking place, a White Nationalist event on friday night, did charlottesville police, did authorities show up prepared for what could unfold . Well, i think that that is one of the things that weve got to look at and look at very deeply. I think there were some preparations. I think there were some attempts to move the site where they were going to be allowed to have their demonstration and then the judge ruled that they could stay there. I think also the question becomes how do you prepare for a terrorist to drive a car in a street that no one would think that someone would do that. So i think at one level we can question their preparation for the crowd, but the deadly act i dont know is something they could have prepared for and it shows the climate of hate in this country. One of the things that comes out of your question, though, is since weve soon more debts and more injuries from them, more than we of seen terrorists from other sources in this country, why isnt the president of the United States condemning these kinds of white supremacist terrorists since he clearly challenged that with president obama about naming others . Given data you named its even more egregious. He will not call that out by name. Some insight on that. I talked with Terry Mcauliffe and asked him that question. He said his state troopers were outgunned. Those militia members had better body armor than his officers did. He said that thank god no shots with fired or it would have been a massacre. Thats a fundamental problem when you hear a governor say that. He said they were hebert they were coming. They were tipped off by it. They knew what was actually happening. Then why were they outgunned . Precisely. I think back to ferguson, baltimore, when i saw Police Officers in riot gear with militarytype equipment weather their own weaponry, im trying to understand why have i seen that type of weaponry at those protests and not anticipating what these individuals rr going to have in charlottesville . Thats a problem, and heres the deal. They better with prepared for more of these marches. These guys are will not go away. They will show up again with those guns and body armor. Seema, reverend al talked about the deadly car attack. Some are already calling this an act of domestic terrorism. Its a seconddegree murder charge. From your estimation, you havent gotten first hand to look at this, when many people saw this, they said this is vehicular homicide. Great question, stephanie, and the reverend and i were discussing this. So virginia has three types of murder. They have capital murder, first down, and second down. Capital murder would require some planning done on purpose with evil intent, so it seems that this could fit. Also, this certainly could fit into a firstdegree murder charge and this case will be presented to a virginia grand jury. It is possible it could be elevated from seconddegree to firstdegree. And so e everyone understands theres this separate and concurrent investigation being done by the feds and they will look at domestic terrorism as well as whether this is a federal hate crime. All of which seems to apply. Then lets step on free speech and hate speech. This was an event where they had their permits. People knew they were coming. Were advocates in this country for free speech. But when we gt to this place where we are, where this is clearly hate speech, rev reasoned al, to you, wheres the line . I think the line is that people have the right to free speech but they dont have the right to harm people, call for the harm of people, and they dont have the right to do it unanswered. And the other part of that is that you have the freedom of speech to respond to them. And i think thats what the counterprotesters were doing, some of which have been parents of civil rights organizations that many of us lead. So free speech goes both ways. But, again, i keep stepping on and im going to stay on where is the president on all of this . Where are the leaders of the country that will denounce it when they of been identified with it . Lets not forget that a lot of these that were there on the side of the White Supremacists that attended their march were wearing trump hats and make America Great again hats. He needs to unequivocally say do not wear my stuff, do not act like im with it, or we must assume, since were now almost, what, 50 hours after the fact, that he has no problem being identified with it because he will not call them out by name. Stephanie, heres the fundamental issue. The daily news in new york about this today, theres a piece, we expect the president to be a moral leader when tragedies happen. We expect the president to bring a nation together. Reagan did it after challenger. Bush did it after 9 11. Obama did it Something Different now. First of all, thats why i use the hashtag, we tried to tell you. We knew exactly what we were getting. Black people 94 voted against donald trump. We knew what we were getting. The issue is when will other leaders step up . Where is the rnc . I call out black republicans. When will they stand up as collective and say you cannot be our president , representing our party, and say nothing . He has said barely anything yesterday. Hes only tweeted about the merck ceo and the race in alabama today. He has no intentions on speaking on this. Any other real president would be planning to go out to the university of virginia to make a speech on race. He will dmoefr it because he doesnt have the guts to do it. You dont need to be a black political leader to stand up right now. You need to be a human. Specifically calling out black republicans to stand up as a collective, not individuals, to say were calling on this party to speak up and also, look, im a christian, my wife is a pastor, where are the white evangelicals . Why are they so silent . That is critical. Where are the white evangelicals . Were having the thousand ministers noorch show white and black ministers and Martin Luther kings statue. And is the president going to call the mother of this victim, this woman that was killed . Thats right. Why hasnt the president picked up the phone and called this family and said on behalf of all americans we mourn with you because your daughter died standing up for what was right . All right. Well, doing the right thing, you dont have to be christian, dount matter what your race is, we all should come together, respect one another, and do the right thing. Thank you all. Important conversation. Well take a break. Next, secretaries mattis and tillerson pen articles pushing a diplomatic solution to the escalating tensions with north korea as pyongyang reportedly recalls their ambassadors. That is according to a south korean news agency. Meanwhile, secretaries mattis and tillerson penned an oped in this mornings wall street journal touting u. N. Sanctions and calling for diplomacy and military cooperation. Very, very different from the president s fire and fury rhetoric. Nbcs matt bradley joins me live if seoul, south korea. Matt, what to we know about this report that north korea is recalling its ambassadors . Reporter well, stephanie, we have heard from several north korean media groups that the ambassadors to russia, china, and the United Nations were sent back to pyongyang. Of course its very tempting to read into things like this. This could mean a precursor to some sort of military action. It also, stephanie, might not mean that. The problem is, looking at north korea, its so opaque and kim jongun is so capricious that its tempting to latch onto any of these sort of indicators. At the same time, there are other reasons why these ambassadors, these diplomats, could have returned to pyongyang. There is a semiannual meeting of diplomats that tends to cur in the summer. The last was in july 2015. That could have been the reason. Therefore there also was the association of Southeast Asian nations, meeting in the philippines just a few weeks ago, and as you know, u. S. Diplomats would do the same thing if hay had they had a meeting in new york, posted in moscow, travel to new york, might swing by washington to meet with their colleague there before going back to their posting. All of these things are on the table. But we have to remember, stepny, that in this situation, the e v es calais, the bellicosity from all sides, none of these countries involved japan, south korea, the United States, north korea theyve not shown any real military movement on the ground or at least nothing matching the level of the rhetoric that weve been hearing. Stephanie . Aggressive rhetoric, two nuclear nation, this is a time. Thank you, matt. Well take a break. Next, a new Trump Campaign ad out yesterday, the day when so many were calling for unity, it targets democrats and the media using stronger language than he did after saturdays attack. The president senmys dont want him to succeed, but americans are saying let President Trump do his job. Enemies. Thats what was spoken about the day after a woman lost her life at a peace march. Krit you cans are questioning that new ad from President Trumps campaign. It was released yesterday. The day after people around the world had called for unity, the day after that deadly violence. Joining me now is msnbc political analyst, wall street Journal White House reporter eli stoke ls with my panel, Michael Steele and former congresswoman Donna Edwards from maryland. What do you make of the timing of this ad when people around the world are coming together, calling for unity . An attack, saying the press is my enemy . Its incredibly tone deaf and said. Tone deaf . But this is where, i dont know that there is coordination. A campaign being run out of trump tower in new york. The president is responding at bedminister. Not sure there is a lot of coordination or a thought that, hey, this just happened. Maybe we should not release this ad and send the fundraising email. This is not how this president rolls. Congresswoman, we saw leaders i mentioned around the world. President obama sent out a tweet that was retweeted 2 million times. A quote from Nelson Mandela says no one is born hating one another because of the color of his skin or his background or religion. It goes on to talk about the important, how important it is to come together. So, were really going to take this at face value. Well, it was poor timing. Or is the president who has steve bannon next to him. A man who said i want to break the system. Are they breaking the system with a message like this . The president trying to deflect from his own responsibility and taking responsibility for his words and those around him. And i just, i think this is a point where we have to say this is not acceptable. Everyone around the world. Everyone it seems except President Trump accepts the fact that in his name, in his name that neonazis decided to rally and the end result was the death of a young woman. And if the president of the United States cant accept that responsibility, then its up to us to call it out and to make certain that, you know, people around the world understand that this really isnt who we are. Michael, the president was asked point blank on saturday. Does he want does he accept support from White Nationalists . I want to share the moment. Do you want the support of the White Nationalist groups, mr. President . All right. After that happened. The founder of the neonazi website today in 2017, the daily storm said no condemination at all. When asked to condemn, he just walked out of the room. Really, really good. God bless him. Michael. Thats the problem. Because im sure the president was thinking as he was instructed by his aides, okay, just do your thing and then leave. Theyre going to shout questions, just go. But youve got to take that moment to turn back and look at the camera and go, absolutely not. Because the question is an important question. In the face of Everything Else thats been going on in the last 24 hours leading up to that, that was a moment where the president hell turn around and talk about Everything Else. Turn around and respond to a reporter saying something that he perceives to be fake news or whatever. This isnt fake news. This is real life. This is america in the 21st century 2017 where it is at least perceived that your administration harbors this type of crazy in the country. This type of hate in the country. This type of insanity. So, its up to you to push back and go, thats not who we are. But, instead, you walk off the stage. Those thats a tone deaf moment in my view that the president cant get back. And to your point that the congresswoman made earlier, it is harder to make up as this thing goes on. Well, then take us inside the white house. You cover the white house. When you talk about the president not denouncing white hate the altright is a watered down term but represents White Supremacists, someone who has publicly given them a platform is steven bannon. Yesterday on meet the press our colleague chuck todd asked hr mcmaster three times point blank can you work in an an administration with steve bannon . Heres what he said. Can you and steve bannon Work Together in this white house . I get taWork Together with a broad range of talented people and you didnt answer can you and steve bannon work in the same white house . I am ready to work with anybody who will help advance the president s agenda and advance the security, prosperity of the American People. Do you believe steve bannon does that . I believe that everyone who works in the white house, who has the privilege, the great privilege every day of serving their nation should be motivated by that goal. Should have, would have, could have. H. R. Mcmaster is a straight shooter. He didnt give a straight answer. What does that tell you about the climate inside the white house . Steve bannon is increasingly on an island. That is the riff between the Senior Adviser to the president , steve bannon. Its grown over afghanistan policy and tension throughout. But this is where, i know steve bannon personifies nationalists who were marching over the weekend. Her per sasonifies. Nothing to do with his views on White Nationalism or anything else. Its including he is one that has leagued and a rogue figure in this white house and there are people john kelly and the new, and mcmaster who would like to sort of minimize bannon or perhaps get him out and the president is sort of souring on him, too. The fact that this is happening at a time when what evidence is there that supports that . Steve bannon is on an island. The president appears to live on said island. Bannon is in d. C. And bannon is a little bit isolated these days. Youre right. Until something happens everyone goes around the merry go round and does their time in the dog house. We do know from our reporting that steve bannon right now, that, you know, so to speak the knives are out for him. There are people who would like to see him marginalize and even taking, and even lose his job. But the president , again, doesnt always like to fire people and dozen necessarily give in to pressure when people are calling for my own reporting, 100 supports that. Except the actions of the president certainly seem to side more with the likings or leanings of steve bannon than they do general kelly or h. R. Mcmaster. On this issue were not being able to name white supremacy. Thats coming from the president. He underlined many sides. He said it twice. They had to put out the clarifying statement, not with anyones name attached to it. Youre right. This is something, not being able to say this. This is coming from the president himself. Its one issue, but to say its a biggy. Well bring you the details of his first hearing. Do not go anywhere. Stay with us all day long. This is msnbc. Hey, is this our turn . Honey. Our turn .
