In a News Conference this morning, ntsb investigators talked about how Harrison Ford avoided neighbors and went down on the course. When you take off from an airport and you need to land an aircraft, you have to pick the best spots that there are and this was apparently the best spot. Amazing instincts. The actor, who is in the hospital today, his son tweeted late yesterday that his dad is battered but okay. Look at hes gliding in right here. I hope hes going to make it. Oh, man, oh, man. [ bleep ]. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh no. Oh [ bleep ]. Oh, my god. So the star wars actor reported engine trouble just after takeoff and requested immediate return and requested his vintage return on the eighth tee. And joining me from the golf course hallie jackson. We just saw the crane lifting it on to a flatbed truck and we see the huge divot, for lack of a better term. We see the massive divot. And they put the remainder of the wing taking off the wings, and the ntsb is taking this to a hangar here in santa monica for a live investigation. We have the live aerials to show you. This process has taken the better part of 45 minutes or so and the initial investigation according to the sg could take two according to the ntsb could take a few weeks to a month and there may not be a finding of the plane crash for up to a year. So Harrison Ford is expected to make a full recovery. He went through some surgeriy a broken arm and surgery and a broken arm and gash but he is okay, that is the good news. He was okay and get the plane down safely without injury to anybody else and he will hopefully make a speedy and full recovery. Hallie jackson in california. Great to see you. Thank you. And today the ntsb is at La Guardia Airport investigating why a plane slipped off the runway during yesterdays snowstorm. It happened around 11 10 a. M. But it was relocated on the rocks near flushing bay and removed so they could get back up and running and back in a hangar and courtesy of w nbc and showing what it was like for passengers inside of the plane. One of the passengers speaking on today. And i saw that and i thought what happens if you go into the water. Does the plane sink or float . Will i see my kids again. And joining me now from la guardia is sarah. They said two planes landed safely minutes before that and the pilots reported good braking on the runway. So what have we learned about this landing that went so differently. Reporter the ntsb is dividing up into one Team One Team examining the damage to the plane and the other examining the pilots and the passengers. Factor is a huge impact and even though the other pilots said the runway was fine. The weather was nasty and they will take that into account during the investigation. And the black box and the flight data recorder will be taken to washington, d. C. To be analyzed. There were 127 passenger as board the flight and speaking out today saying they feel very lucky and very blessed that things werent worse. Could have turned out a lot worse. Some were forced to sleep in their cars overnight and some abandoned and left their vehicles behind and tried to walk to safety. John yang reports from shepherdsville, kentucky. Reporter here at a truck shop in shepherdsville, kentucky. Truckers have headed back out on to i65 now that it is open and moving again. Some guys have been here two days waiting out the storm. I65 shut down for about 20 hours between Late Wednesday night and into thursday evening with hundreds of people stranded in their cars sleeping overnight. Some of them there as long as 15 hours. The National Guard had to go out and rescue 200 drivers. There are still abandoned vehicles on the highway waiting to be reclaimed. And this morning early this morning another jackknife tractortrailer on that stretch of i65. But the Kentucky State Police it was cleared quickly and highway is back open and moving again. Thomas. Nbc news correspondent john yang reporting from kentucky. And it was just a short time ago the ncaa handed down a severe punishment to jim boeheim and syracuse a ninegame suspension for the coach and a loss of 12 scholarship. The university does not agree with the report and many appeal portions of this decision. But joining me now, matt from the Washington Post. Break down what this means for the coachs legacy and a revamped syracuse Basketball Team in the future . Well jim bay home has most wins behind mike she chef ski of duke. And they will take away a few hundred wins but doesnt mean a whole lot but tarnished his legacy. When we think about the university has gone through in terms of the investigation, this is a long one and they might not like everything that came out of the ncaa report does this mean they can find some closure to move on and try to get past all of this . They can. And they are going to appeal. But in the next four years, that is three scholarships a year. That is a sizable number. That will definitely hurt. And so when we talk about what they were most troubled with with the ncaa report what are the three areas of big concern . The first was the academic counseling where you had Staff Members more or less writing papers and helping out with tests for the players. And digging deep into the report you find that the stab members had access to students passwords so they were conversing with teachers while more or less posing as the student, which is terrible. We continue to follow the breaking news out of california where the ntsb is now physically removing that vintage aircraft that Harrison Ford crashlanded on a venice california golf course. They have strapped it down to a flat bed truck on the side of the golf course where it landed and harrison is recovering and we understand nicely from the injuries sustained in the crash. Nobody else was injured but they are making progress with the investigation and with the removal of the aircraft from the golf course. Were following developing news out of South Carolina as well. The idea of building a new world together, not just settling on what, but imagining what might be. The president referring to selma, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the march this weekend. But referring directly to john lewis, who was a part of that story and for congressman lewis, that is his american legacy. Not only being there 50 years ago but being instrumental as a political leader from South Carolina in washington, d. C. So we are moving on to the state department as it shifts through emails turned over by staff of the former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton. The investigation turns in part on whether sensitive investigation was transmitted across the private email he used across those years. And clinton must reassure supports that shes handling the blowback from a controversy over what are government documents. Mark murray is the senior Political Editor for msnbc news and joins us now. And there is controversy over the Democratic Base that would defend Hillary Clinton from her coming out. And weve only gotten a tweet from the former secretary . That is right. And this is not going to be solved until Hillary Clinton answer everyones questions and turning over every email she has, or a good portion of it where people think they are getting the full record from her days as secretary of state, thomas. And when you look at the political ramifications of all of this no one really think this is will jeopardize her getting the democratic nomination if she decides to run for the presidency. Every poll has her up 40 to 50 points up and people like liz ben warren or joe biden. People like her and this does hint as problems. The Ongoing Investigation and else does that turn up and this highlights her really rough relationship with the Political Press core which could be something that could come in the months ahead. Correct, if Hillary Clinton were to say yes, im running for president. But we should wait to see when that happens, if at all. Mark murray thank you. All week long we have been following this story from the state department and there are bombshell parts to it that the former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, set up her own home email system and used it exclusively for official business and her private personal business so we got to thinking for private citizens out there how you would set up your own shadow i. T. Home system. And so frances has that story. What would we do . And here is the brokedown and you breakdown and you dont have to be too techie and you and me dont have hillarys vast resource and tools. And thanks to our geeky fences at the Washington Post we broke down what we need. You need an internet a static ip to tell us where your emails go. And you need a service, which is just a computer. And if something goes wrong, that is all you. You are your own i. T. Guy. And if you think about that, you are going to have your own server inside of your home you know just as a precaution, you need a backup source outside of the home because if there is a fire or water damage or something that could go crazy at home god forbid you dont want to lose all of that information. So i think while people question what is in emails, i think people are more curious as to why did Hillary Clinton need to be so guarded and it feeds into a different narrative about the clintons. So much going on this afternoon and we are following it all for you. A quick update, La Guardia Airport has reopened the runway where the delta airplane skidded off the runway. This is video of the airplane in a hangar. And the ncaa has handed down the penalty to syracuse. The pepalities penalties vacate all wins in which ineligible players played and the mens Basketball Team will not participate in any postgame teams. And the family of the soul singer of martin gay says the song blurred lines was copied. And Harrison Fords airplane wreckage is being removed from the crash site as we speak. And joining me now, host of the ed show and also happens to be a pilot and we have been tapping into your brain a lot this week because of what weve been seeing in the news. But lets talk about this specifically for Harrison Ford and that type of plane he was on. This is a trainer plane. It is. It was originally designed back in the 1930s and it was designed specifically as a trainer. If they were going to put a young kid into this aircraft this is the first thing they would put him in to teach him how to fly. It is a relatively easy airp airplane to fly. It needs more skill. It is light. A little over a thousand pounds and the swing plan is only 30 feet. Most of the airplanes put in there are a little under 30 horsepower horsepower. An it is a light utility aircraft that was used as a trapper. They only made 1500 so it is a good collectors item. So a oneofakind. Sew takes off from Santa Monica Airport and that is not far from the golf course. What is the instinct going through his mind. Judging from the media reports and his audio with the tower, it is normal. If you are going to lose a engine, it is during takeoff and on landing. When you give it power to takeoff and it sounds like he was on climbout, had some issues communicated back. The first instinct was to try to make the airport. And then of course he came to the determination he wasnt going to be able to do that, which he took the golf course which was perfect. And he walked away well didnt walk away but alive and that is the big thing. His son was speaking out about his dads recovery saying all would be okay and his dad is getting the best attention he can and there was a Spine Surgery who happened to be surgeon who happened to be playing through that day. And if you are going to pick an area to go down this is not a cheap place to go land but if you are going to pick a place. You want doctors around. That is true. The rivoting on this aircraft is spearer. They dont make them like they used to. It is aluminum and very strong and designs and easy to play. It is not very fast. A little over 100 miles per hour. And the other ryan st the sport trainer, the next design of the aircraft was for acrobatic and a more powerful engine. I didnt mow what he had in that i dont know what he had in this aircraft but there is more beyond this model. Im sure others have seen them in performances and things like that. He clearly knew what to do. He communicated and then responded. The first place you look when you lose an engine is right there. That is what they teach you. If can you make the airport, great, then boom put it down and it is right there. And nobody was on the ground and we understand le make a full recovery. And hell fly again. Im sure he will. This weekend dignitaryies will travel there to celebrate and the president talked about why it is so important today. Selma is not just about commemorating the past it is about honoring the legends that changed this country through your actions today in the here and now. Selma is now. Selma is about the courage of ordinary p extraordinary things because they believe they can change the country. Selma is now. Mark mornu is from the urban league and he joins me from montgomery, alabama. An the president s speep and what he is delivering speech and what he is delivering today in South Carolina and what do we utilize this and see what he will deliver in selma . I think the president s essential point is right. Selma is about yesterday. But it is also about today. And thomas it is about today because of the very important work we have to do and the inspiration we should draw from those beat and arrested in selma and those who lost their lives in selma, yet a story of great courage, great conviction and the willingness to with stand even brutality and violence for a cause that was just. And those qualities, i think, are so important to us today as we fight todays important battles. And as we think about the juxtaposition or dichotomy of where weve been and where we are going and we have a president a black president who will be part of the 50th anniversary going back there with these civil rights leaders still with Us John Lewis among us to be part of. This but as we think about that anniversary mark and i think the real difference of the report coming out from the department of justice and what is taking place in ferguson and how much progress weve made and how much we really havent . It is a contradiction in terms and in logic that we celebrate a barack obama, we celebrate an eric holder the many men and women who have been elected to office who serve in high positions in the business the labor, the Nonprofit Sector in athletics across the nation. Yet yet, there is this report from ferguson. Yet there are 13plus communities across the nation whose Police Departments are under federal consent decrees, yet there are 40 states who have tried in just the last five years to push back the right to vote by making it more difficult for voter i. D. , restrictions. And yet a Supreme Court that knocked out a important provision of the Voting Rights act that people fought and died for 50 years ago. So it is a contradiction of terms but this generation of americans should have courage and inspiration and learn that justice has to be protected, civil rights and Voting Rights and democracy have to be defended and at every stage in American History and now and into the future. As you talk about courage and inspiration we need to be reminded we need that courage and inspiration today. Marc morial, thank you. So the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission was created in the wake of the tragedy, in 2013 and tasked with investigating the state policies in connecticut and they are expected today to really recommendations on Mental Health and School Safety and gun violence prevention specifically. And when we think about where weve come as a country, using sandy as a tragic example there is not a lot of policy changes made in the wake of that day. That is right. At the federal level there hasnt been much happening. The states have recently taken matters into their own hands. Connecticut is an example of one state who passed background checks for gun sales and transfers, including unlicensed dealers, one of six states that have done that. And one thing that you talk about coming out in this report it is not just about what we feel as a country, when it comes to our right to own a gun, but about the larger conversation that needs to be had about Mental Health. Sure. And that is exacted today. The 16member panel is expected to kind of put out recommendations on reducing the stigma around Mental Health in the country. You read my mind. And frances joins me with an update, as weve been following this around the week the nasty weather around the country and the nasty effect. Weve it across the board. The freezing weather still has its grip on the nation. The traffic has started to move on the kentucky i65 and some drivers were standed as long as 24 hours and traffic backed up 30 miles as National Guard worked to free them and the National Guard units were stationed along 1400 miles of state highways as the sleet and freezing rain and snow made travel for them treacherous. And not often seen look at the kids taking advantage of the frigid temperatures and the snow to take to the sleds and they had to act early because by midday it turned into slushy mud. Im so honored you are here with me and it is amazing to think we are celebrating the 30th Year Anniversary of the Breakfast Club. 30 years. Does it seem like 30 years ago you shot this. There is a whole, as you get older, there is a whole decade and i keep thinking im ten years longer than i am. There was a decade in there. Oh, yes, right. So when you look back and know what a cult classic this film is did you know at the time when you were filming it that would be special . No. We didnt know. It was just everyone loved john hughes and the cast got along and it was a great and wonderful experience but i dont think anybody thought it would have this kind of cultural impact. And the legs that it had. And so many people familiar with Breakfast Club and the theme of the movie because it is universal because so many of us go through the difficult times through high school and learning who we are and growing up but do you have one special memory of being on set that really stands out to you . I think i think it was i think it was john gave me a lot of room but i actually the best moment was d. D. Allen who edited it and is a brilliant worldclass he had yoiter and editing on the side of the set editing on the side of the set while we were doing it and she said i want you to know im watching you. She said im watching you and everything you do. Just keep doing it. Just because you arent talking doesnt mean you arent being seen. Is there anything you took as you started to get to know the character of allison and through john hughes and his writing and direct directing, is there anything that stands out. Improvised. And the hood popping up. Improvising. It was like that for everybody but yeah a lot. When it comes to thinking about the different characters who have gone on to different great careers, are you still buddies or friends with any of them and do you see each other at events . We see at each other at events and cross paths. Im going to see molly at south by southwest and i havent seen her in a while. Everybody has their different lives. It is special when our paths do cross because it is an incredible experience from our past. But everyone is far flung right now. So for you, youre now teaching. Some teaching. Youre also an activist and still acting. Still acting. So the ally sheedy that we know today if you could talk to the ally sheedy then 30 years ago, on the set of the Breakfast Club, what would you say to that young girl . Dont worry so much. Dont worry so much. Its going to be okay. Youre going to be all right. So weve been doing this genius seven days of genius here at nbc. John hughes obviously a genius for his generation and put out. And what was your relationship like with john hughes and your memories . I loved him. I really loved him. Felt like he gave me this great part and let me run with it. There was a whole bunch of stuff that we shot that is not actually in the movie. I know somebody has it somewhere. Is it d. D. . No. I think his family has it but there is really really long version of it with every single thing that we shot in it . Really. Yeah. I wonder if that will ever come to light . I dont think so. Because john kept things close to vest but he did let me do so many things and even though they are not in the movie they inform what ended up in the movie and i love him and trusted him. Why do you think his movies left a mark on culture and society . I think he just had a real grasp on the time. He had a very distinct voice for and feeling for not just teenagers but for people thrown into ridiculous situations like planes trains, automobiles. He could take a ridiculous situation and find out sorts of humor in it. That home alone and all of those just throwing the characters together and something believable but a little whacked situation and then he could pull out all of these different responses and human relationships. It is just unusual. It is unusual. And do you get the most people coming up to you wanting to talk about Breakfast Club. You have an epic body of work through your career as an actor and a brilliant one. But is that the one people stop you the most for . They stop me for Breakfast Club and they stop me for high art, believe it or not. That was in new york. What about st. Elmos fire. Yes. That is the movie that made we want to have a jeep. Yes. People do bring up st. Elmos fire. But on the subway it is either high art or Breakfast Club. Ally sheedy we love you. We think you are fantastic. And we are honored to have you here.
