The one word he didnt use that caught peoples attention. After last year, revoking obamaera regulations to make it harder for some with Mental Illness to buy guns. President trump, you say, what can you do . You can stop the guns from getting into these childrens hands put metal detecters at the entrances to every school. What can you do . You can do a lot this is not fair to our families. Our children go to school and have to get killed congress is not has not allowed our federal government to study the effects of gun violence since 1996. Theyve banned it every single year. Are they really afraid of their base, or are they afraid of the nra running ads against them . I think probably the latter. Cnn is reporting that indicted former aide to president Trumps Campaign in transition, rick gates, is finalizing a plea deal with special counsel Robert Muellers office. If the report is accurate, gates would gain two other trump advisers who are cooperating with the mueller investigation. Steve bannon meeting over multiple days with special counsel Robert Mueller. He was shot as he locked the door. 37yearold aaron feis was an assistant football coach and security guard. Hes hailed as a hero. Several witnesses say he died shielding students. One girl said he jumped between her and the shooter, pushing her out of the line of fire. According to the timeline released by authorities, the entire shooting lasted about seven minutes. One gun maker that sells the ar15, bushmaster, estimates a good shooter can fire 45 rounds per minute. It is possible the suspect could have fired 315 rounds in seven minutes. The number goes way up if the rifle has been modified or outfitted with magazines that can hold up to 100 rounds. I want to talk about those seven minutes with two of the teachers who survived the shooting. Ibe was teaching a class about the holocaust. Darren, a coteacher in a building across from where the shooting happened. Thank you to both of you for being here. I know this is difficult. It is difficult for me, and i wasnt there. When the glass exploded, tell me what you were thinking. What happened . Well, first of all, i just want to say that we love our students. And we love our school. We love our community. We are very broken today. Before the shots into the classroom, we heard shots in the hallway. Very loud. The students, i have seniors, and they were didnt hesitate. They instantaneously knew what that was. We dove and tried to find places to hide behind a file cabinet, behind my desk, behind the laptop cart. They were holding up books to fie shield their faces. We heard it. Seconds after, all the students tried to hide. Thats when he shot the machine gun through the glass panel of the front door and hit some of our students. Fatally killing two beautiful souls. Helena and nick. Tell us about helena and nick. We read a little about them, but a paragraph cant tell you enough about these lives that were snuffed out. I was lucky enough to have the two of them in class. I had nick as a 10th grader in my english class two years ago. I had helena for about five to six months before they went to ivys room in january. We switched classes after the semester, the fourth period. Nick was just always very nonchalant. He always had a smile. Nick had that beaming smile that resonated amongst his friends. Like i said, very laid back, very easy going. He loved life. He was an incredible athlete. Hed always tell us about his accomplishments with the swim team and water polo. Te helena, she was the type of student that would stay after class for just a minute or two with her friend to get another word in to the teacher, to get another comment in about what we had discussed in class. Our class that we teach with our colleague, donna melkin, is a class that promotes awareness and we promote peace. And we teach the history of the holocaust. Hate is never okay. Never okay. The kids are in that class as an elective. They purposely took a class like that so they would be able to help others. Thats what they were there for. Ivy, you said it got quiet at one point. Were talking about it being just seven minutes, but thats seven minutes of hell when youre in it. You said it got quiet and you heard the gunman go across the hall to your best friends class. Tell me what you were thinking. Correct. After he came and shot into the panel of the classroom and hit our students, i was the kids were shaking and we were all hovering in the corner and behi behind the desk and anywhere we could find. We were frightened hed reach into the panel and open the door, but he didnt. He went across the hall to my best friend. She also has seniors and juniors. She teaches psychology. He did the same thing into her class. Thats where car men schentrup was killed. They were trying to calm the students. They were amazing. Even though they were down, they made sure everyone was quiet so he didnt come back. We were just so afraid he was going to come back. Then he continued on, unfortunately, to kill aaron feis, and then to go up to the third floor. Doesnt make sense. To our colleague, scott beigel, a First Year Teacher at Stoneman Douglas. He was our colleague in social studies. What do you want to hear from the president when he comes to parkland . I dont. Ivy . I dont. Yeah. I understand. This kid should not have had an ak i want to hear more about the students. I want to hear more about this community. I want to hear more about our teachers and what we do every day. And this helena, and darren will tell you a story about helena. So one of the things the first day of my class with the holocaust and literature and the arts, the first day of class, we asked a question, can we eradicate hate . Thats written on the board. Id like to report that the majority of the teenagers would say, yes, we can eradicate hate, because they have to say yes, but the majority say, no, theyre being realistic. Helena wasnt like that. Helena was one of the few students that wrote that we can eradicate hate. She promoted peace. She wanted it. All these students wanted it. And our country wants it. But we have to do it. Thats the thing, it has to be with this generation. Thats why were teachers. Thats why we continue to do this. Were in this profession over ten years now, and we continue to do it every day because we believe that the kids will make that change. Yup. We will continue to do this. I have no doubt our community is going to recover from this. No doubt about that. I spoke to so many of your students in the last day or so while i was there. I thought that they articulated so well a message about gun violence that we dont hear everywhere else. Correct. The rest of the country is paralyzed. Our generation has not been able to succeed in this. Yes, sir. I left with a good amount of hope after talking to some of your students, that maybe that generation gets it. Maybe that generation can overcome the problems weve had dealing with guns in this country and find a viable solution that keeps people safe. I think so. Those kids are incredible. They are mature beyond their years. Unfortunately, this situation probably made them a little bit more mature. What they did that day and how they reacted was beyond me. As much as we prepared, you couldnt have been prepared for what happened at that moment in our classroom. Darren, what happens next . Do you guys go back to school . When do you go back . How do people readjust to life in the place theyre supposed to feel safe during the day . We dont know what happens next. Whatever the course is, were going to be there with our fellow staff. Yup. Were going to be there with our kids. A lot of people are wondering, you know, what are we going to do . How are we going to do this . What do we say with the kids . Well continue to be the same as we are every day. We talk about everything with the kids and were there for them. Theyll be in that classroom again. The kids will continue to go on. The next generation of kids that come through our school are going to continue on, like weve been doing for over 20 years at this school. I graduated from this school in 20 2002. I spent four years here as a student. Ten years here as a teacher. I can say that all the generations of students that have come through this school, all the generations of teachers, we will continue to go on. This is not the event that will define us. We will make our own definition, and we will continue to be Stoneman Douglas, which is one of the top schools not just in the state but in this country. We will never forget those students. Never forget them. We will never, ever forget those beautiful souls. We will never. We will never. We will carry on, and change will come. Thank you to both of you. Ivy and darren, teachers at Stoneman Douglas high school in parkland, florida. People are leaving the funeral. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. Stephanie is off today. Special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into russian interference seems to be closing in on the Trump Campaign team. Rick gates is close to reaching a plea deal with mueller. Gates is the fourth member of trumps team to plead guilty or be indicted in muellers investigation. I want to bring in elizabeth holtzman. Good to see you. Thanks. For people who have trouble keeping up with this, we have two people who pleaded guilty in the investigation to something, and we have two under indictment. Rick gates is one of the two under indictment in concert with paul manafort. This becomes important because it is not a random third person. It is a third person connected to the manafort charges. What does this mean . Paul manafort was campaign manager. He also was very tied in to roger stone who has been a campaign adviser. Questions have been raised about his activities in ukraine. Rick gates is like a key that opens up manafort. Opens up whether there was can confirm whether there was criminality because manafort has been indicted on money laundering. Remember, manafort was in the big meeting in trump tower with donald trump jr. That everybody lied about, including the president. Gates wasnt at the meeting but manafort was. Maybe gates knows, because manafort told him, what happened. So gates is in a position to tell us about that meeting. He is in a position not us, but mueller and the grand ju jury hes in a position to tell them about other activities manafort was engaged in. Manafort, apparently, was willing to brief one of the russian oligarcoligarchs. Maybe it is a way of getting back to putin about the Trump Campaign. So this could confirm all kinds of collusion. Also, other things that were going on in the campaign at that time because he was raising money for the campaign. He stayed on in the transition. If you remember, the indictment of manafort didnt have any connections to the Trump Campaign. It was about manafort and his fairly long history of working with and for foreign governments. Whats the idea here, that mueller gets to place manafort in a position where manafort needs to turn, as well, and then you have four guilty pleas opposed to the two we have now . Well, thats one of the possibilities. Or that we skip over manafort and get to other people who can get information. But, yes, he can definitely confirm criminality if there is such. Secondly, he himself can give other information about other highlevel people, possibly even the president , in the Trump Campaign and the transition. We have been hearing not a lot of people really knew rick gates and what he was all about, but weve been hearing hes been changing lawyers and hes having a lot of issues with defending himself. Hes not a man of a lot of means, and thats part of the issue. When you have federal charges against you, by the time the federal government charges you, generally speaking, they think they have a case. Not only do they have a case when they charge you, but generally the conviction rate is pretty high. Chance s youre going to be convicted are very high. Hes made an early decision, if he does this, its been reported he is doing this, but if he does it, his lawyers looked at the evidence and said, this is going to be the better of potential outcomes . Right. If you take a guilty plea, you may get a very reduced sentence. Think about michael flynn. Right. But if you go to trial and put the government to the time and expense of proving a trial against you, winning a trial against you, you could be going to jail for a long time. Good to see you. Now, we have seen in the past that these russian bots sometimes do hue to an altright agenda. Theyve been attacking the Robert Mueller investigation recently. President trump is playing the blame game over lawmakers failure to pass legislation on immigration reform. He tweeted, cannot believe how badly Daca Recipients have been treated by the democrats. Totally abandoned. Republicans are still working hard. This comes after lawmakers failed to meet todays selfimposed deadline to pass a law protecting millions of dreamers. Four different proposals failed to reach the 60 votes needed. The proposal closest to the president s four pillar plan gained 49 votes, the least of any proposal brought to the floor. Senators started, gridlocked. Kate there is this flurry of activity to get something done because the president rescinded some of the daca protections. They go away on march 5th. Its not just that these are selfimposed deadlines. Congress has to come up with a solution, at least for dreamers. They have to come up with a solution for dreamers. Although, remember, because President Trumps decision to get rid of daca is currently enjoined by the courts, in a way, congress may have bought itself extra time, which is sort of bad news for everyone. It means this may drag on longer and longer. It also means if congress doesnt resolve the situation before march 5th, when the court makes a decision, you could see, overnight, thousands of people lose status. Right. And the white house has said, john kelly has said, that Daca Recipients wont be first in line for deportation, but weve seen deportations of people you wouldnt have guessed. They werent the bad hopeople t president said they would be. But if they lose the status, they cant work. A number of employees may say, we dont know how to pay you and you may have to lose your job. Hundreds of thousands of dreamers currently have jobs. They need work permits to have. Also, they get Health Insurance from the jobs. Youre right, weve seen a huge increase since President Trump came into office of arrests of people who have no criminal record, something we havent seen before. The dreamers, i dont think, are going to be satisfied with a handshake deal from the president or the director of homeland security, a sort of promise not to arrest them, especially when they may not be able to get Health Insurance. Also, instate tuition for college and scholarships. More is at stake than just the ability to live here. This four pillar thing the president came up with is being described as comprehensive immigration reform. As an immigration reporter, you know its not true. Fundamentally, when it comes to daca and a few other things, there is broad agreement amongst americans, even republicans. Why cant congress get this done . Do you have any hope they can . I think we have two really big sticking points. Youre right, there are many other types of immigration that havent been talked about and wont be touched at all. But this idea of chain migration the president keeps talking about, this is the core of our immigration system. The vast majority of visas, two thirds of the visas we grant are based on family ties. The president wanting to reshape that, its a huge, huge change that democrats are going to resist. Then we have daca, a pathway to citizenship for dreamers. Youre right, Many Americans agree, but at the same time, there are a lot of people in the president s base who dont, who are calling him amnesty don. Those are the two points, i think, are going to keep the republicans and democrats fighting. Its really do i have hope . I mean, ive been left at the l altar before, in cases where reform looked likely. I cant speculate. Fascinating so Many Americans are in favor of fixing the situation and congress cant get it done. Thank you for your reporting. New York Times National immigration reporter. Children are dying in america. Congress is trying to pass an extremely lax gun law. First, want to share something with you. A tweet and a series of texts exchanged by two brothers, students, during the parkland, florida, school shooting. The older brother, sam, quote, scariest part of it all was knowing my little brother was above me and never knowing if id see him again. Ive never treated him the way he deserved. Not anymore. Seeing his face outside the school was the most relief ive ever felt. My prayers to all. Here are the texts on your screen. Are you okay . Hopefully. Just know i love you. I love you, too. Forever. You think im okay . Dont do anything. Dont do anything. You understand, matthew . Please answer me. Are you okay . Yes. Just stay hidden, please. Yo, yo, are you okay, brother . Yes, you . Yes. Matthew, im out of the building. Have you met the cops yet . Its the kind of thing i saw a lot of yesterday. People were showing me their texts, what they sent their parents and loved ones. Thats the thing that has to make people think about whey this has to stop. The tragedy in parkland will not be the last mass shooting in this country. Consider this, the United States makes up 4. 4 of the entire worlds population. Okay . Thats what we have to think about. This population, 4. 4 of the population, owns 42 of the worlds nonmilitary weapons. The rest of the world combined owns 58 of the weapons. America has more weapons than anywhere else. Nearly 1 3 of all Mass Shootings worldwide, between 1966 and 2012, have happened in this country. 62 , almost 2 3 of workplace and School Shootings during that time in the world happened in the United States. Only 38 happened in other places. As for remember, 4. 4 of the worlds population, but were 2 3 of workplace and School Shootings. As for where the most guns are in the United States, take a look at this. The states that are in the darkest red have more than 100,000 guns, registered weapons, according to the atf. Some states, like california and pennsylvania, are also the most populous states, which could explain why you find so many guns there, and in texas. 50 to 100,000 gets you the lightest color red. Light pink is fewer than 50,000 guns. We have to understand the connection between having this many guns and having this many gun deaths. Joining me is adam langford, associate professor at the university of alabamas department of criminal justice. Adam has sliced and diced these numbers any way you cut it. Adam, while i am sympathetic to and understand we have to pay more attention to Mental Health as it relates to gun ownership, the studies that youve done and others have done indicate that thats not thats a bright, shiny object. It is a bit of a distraction. The reason we have gun deaths and Mass Shootings in america is because of the number of guns weve got. Yeah, thats right. So if you look at an individual mass shooter, certainly, there are a lot of factors that stand out. Sometimes, there are Mental Health problems. Some people talk about gender. There are a variety of other things you can look at in an individual. When you look Cross Nationally to explain, why does this happen more in the United States than anywhere else, Mental Health doesnt seem to be the explanation. I did this Cross National study of 171 countries. There are more than 40 countries with higher suicide rates than us. However, were number one in the world, as you said, in total firearms owned, firearms per capita and public mass shooters. Those things, according to my Statistical Research findings, are directly connected. What can we look at where we can say, all right, there are other countries that have a lot of weapons or a lot of weapons per capita. It is important to keep in mind. There are other countries that have mass attacks. China, for example. But fewer people end up dying in them because guns are not used. Guns that can fire multiple bullets at the same time are not used. Again, whatever you think the problem is, your statistics indicate that the preponderance of guns per capita in the United States is part of the issue. Yeah, absolutely. As you mentioned, in china, they do have acts of mass murder but, typically, it is mass murder with a kitchen knife or a blunt instrument. Instead of seeing 17 dead or 26 dead or 58 dead, which are things weve seen this spring and last fall, they typically see five, six, seven dead, which makes a tremendous difference to the people who survive and, of course, their families. You can also look at australia. Australia had a major, terrible, tragic public mass shooting in the mid 1990s. Then they started a buyback program. They offered Cash Incentives for people to turn in guns. They enacted gun control. They havent had a major public mass shooting of that magnitude since. Adam, your research is excellent, but there is actually, if one ranted to read, Excellent Research on guns, not from the cdc, forbidden by the federal government to Research PublicHealth Effects of guns, but the research is out there. Why does your research and the research of others fly in the face of what the nra and nrasupported candidates will tell america about the reasons for these mass killings . Well, you know, part of the issue is kind of the misdirection, pointing this solely on Mental Illness, which is misnomer, as weve talked about. Some of the other things you hear, you hear the idea that campus carry, right, more guns on campuses, more students being armed, will help them protect themselves. I guess i was struck by a few years ago, this debate was going on in texas. The chancellor of the university of texas system is also a former military guy, special Operations Leader who oversaw the obama bin laden raid. This guy is in favor of guns when necessary, but he said guns on campus will make us less safe. Is there a way that we can look at gun laws, gun control, call it what it is, regulation of the use and purchase of guns, that doesnt make americans who feel strongly about their Second Amendment, feel were talking guns away or controlling, but in the same way anybody can buy a car but you have to have insurance. If youre not a responsible driver, that will be the controlling factor. Are there things like that that can be done in america so people can push back against the nra and politicians and say, there are sensible things that happen in other parts of the world where people own guns. Canada, where im from, gun ownership is unusually high for the developed world in canada but we dont have situations like we have in the United States, anywhere close to these numbers. Well, some people have proposed the idea of licensing. You need a license to buy a car. You need a stricter license including Mental Health checks to fly a plane for example. And the idea that there would be different licensing tiers for different level of guns depending on how lethal those guns are. The kind of gun you need to protect your family and kind of gun you need to, you know, fire endless streams of bullets for many minutes at a time to kill 178 vehic 17 victims, 58 victim, maybe those things are different. Maybe there is a way to strike a balance so people can protect themselves and their families without having the kind of guns that do this terrible carnage. You get some sense that there is a constituency in washington and state legislatures for this . Are there some people who are working on sensible acceptable blood based gun control . Well, to me i guess the most compelling is the recent effort, and this is just from december two months ago, of military leaders, retired military generals, and other military leaders who, look, they are not antigun, again, they are proceed si pro si science, they fought overseas and they dont want to see americans being slaughtered. So they do believe that you can respect the Second Amendment and yet pass gun laws that will help ensure dangerous people who will commit these attacks dont become as deadly as they are. Address d adam, thanks for your research. Id like to continue the conversation with you as days go by. Id care for action. We dont need more studies about the effect of staggering disproportion nat a disproportionate and largely unregulated gun ownership. And cdc are expressly forbidden from researching the Public Health effects of gun violence. That is how bad it is in america. Only here among developed countries is gun control something that is frowned upon or thought of as infringement. Even in countries with high levels of gun ownership, ownership and use is controlled. Virtually nowhere in the world can you buy, sell, trade and carry guns in a manner that americas gun lobby, the nra, would have us do. No one else in the world seems to be able to make sense ever why america cant confront intellectually or politically a constitutional amendment that reasonable people understand to have been uniquely relevant in times gone by. And not applicable in the same way to our modern existence. But mostly what we need to confront is that our politics is in the grip of a force unlike any that has historically influenced politics. The gun lobby, aka the nra. The nrment a claims mentnra cl membership organization, but they wont release their data. Im a gun owner. Every year i receive a membership card from the nra with a membership number. Ive never asked for one. Ive never paid for one. But i strongly suspect that i am counted in the secret records of the nra as a member. Im not. They dont represent me and i suspect they dont represent and arent paid for by a lot of members. The nra is the gun industrys lobby. It doesnt represent gun owners. It represents gun makers and exists to protect their profits. The same as the phrma lobby or the bank lobby or the corn lobby. Strangely we all use drugs and banks and most of us eat corn, but we dont have cards that indicate our membership and ind. I think the nra is engenius. It does the bidding of gun makers under the cover of being a broad based organization and it uses the money to promote a way of thinking that pits ordinary responsible gun owners against the vast majority of americans who believe in gun control. Most measures believe in gun control, not a little more or a little less, but sensible rules that govern, regulate and, yes, control the sale and use of guns. Gun control is empirically necessary if we are going to stop killings like parkland, sutherland springs, las vegas, the pulse nice club, san bernardino, sandy look, uvmea a so many others. Gun control not thoughts and prayers will save lives. Thoughts and prayers are for when we dont have the will to protect our innocent. Ill see you at 3 00. And right now on Andrea Mitchell reports, the lives lost. Tears flowing as the Parkland Community comes together in grief and anger. I i dont know what i do next. President trump, please do something do something. Action we need it now. These kids need safety now what now . Some survivors of the deadly shooting are denouncing politicians. Joining gun control advocate, demanding action from President Trump. Tell your buddies in congress, tell Paul Ryan Mitch Mcconnell and marco rubio, all the family men who care so much about their communities that what we need are laws, real laws that do Everything Possible to keep
