And now congress has leaked them. Here they are. 15 pages of memos covering everything from leakers to hookers. Comey describing the conversations as chaotic and trying to piece them together like a jigsaw puzzle. Mike flynn, the eventually fired National Security adviser at one point shortly after the inauguration comey says trump criticized flynn saying the president pointed his finger at his head and said the guy has serious judgment issues. The home moes describe not only the getting frustrated that flynn did not return a certain phone call fast enough. They say the phone call was to none other than Vladimir Putin. The homemos became public as you sat down. Given the nature of the person as i understood the president elect, he might not tell the truth if it became an issue. I needed a written record. The president , youve testified to congress and write about in the book told you to lay off in the investigation to flynn. Its been reported that President Trump did more than just ask you himself. Did anybody at any time other than the president ever ask you to back off the Flynn Investigation . No. In february, 2017, comey also details how the president dismissed unverified allegations about prostitutes in moscow. He said Vladimir Putin told him we have some of the most beautiful hookers in the world. The president was conveying this to you in the white house . In the oval office. He told you he had a personal conversation with president putin about hookers . Yes. Did you believe him or did you think he was speaking hieber bollicly . Didnt seem to be hyperbole. He describes a conversation with Reince Priebus in 2017 writing that priebus asked comey if this was a private conversation. Comey replied it was and priebus asked if comey would answer do you have a wiretap on mike flynn. You did give an answer . Yes. And told him the way it should work is you should go to the ask the jus mitice department. Youre teaching the white house chief of staff how its supposed to happen when the relationship between the Justice Department and the white house is properly handled . Trying to. Did he learn . I dont know. Some indication he didnt because at the end of this after i explained the importance of regular communication, he took me to see the president on the way out, even though i said im fine. I dont need to see him. That at least was some indication he wasnt getting it. As for the russia investigation, the president s legal team is expanding. Once known as americas mayor, Rudy Giuliani is now President Trumps newest lawyer. During the campaign Rudy Giuliani served as one of candidate trumps most combatic surrogates. I am sick and tired of the defamation of donald trump by the media and by the clinton campaign. I am sick and tired of it. This is a good man. You obviously worked for Rudy Giuliani when he was u. S. Attorney in manhattan and you later got his job. He said hes going to negotiate an end to the Mueller Investigation and hes told reporters tonight he expects he will be able to negotiate that end. Hell end the Mueller Investigation in about two weeks. I saw that in the media. Struck me as interesting. I dont know what his vision would be for that. I dont know how it will be coming into the new legal team and working with the president given the strength of Rudy Giulianis personality and the president s. Newly released memos written by james comey hold these cryptic lines. Quote, apparently as the president was toasting tree ma say he was explaining that she had been the first to call him after his inauguration. And Michael Flynn interrupted to see that redacted had called first. Apparently. It was then that the president learned of redacted call and confronted flynn about it. Well, the call was from russian president Vladimir Putin according to associated prez and the wall street journal. The president took to twitter this morning defending his fired adviser saying this. So general Michael Flynns life can be destroyed while shady james comey can leak and lie. Is that really the way life in america is supposed to work . I dont think so. So who totally destroyed mike flynns life . Lets look at this. Flynn found himself in hot water early into his time with the Trump Administration for contact he had with this guy, kislyak. Trump himself eventually fired flynn for lying to Vice President mike flynn about this interaction mike pence, im sorry, for this interaction. But it was other connections to the russian government that seemed to have started his legal issues. Flynn was paid by Russian Companies including the rt news channel for speeches he gave in 2015 while in moscow. He reportedly lied about the source of the payments when applied to renew his security clearance form and that is a felony. As the special counsel investigation ramped up, flynns work for the turkish government came under a microscope. It was discovered he wrote an op ed criticizing a turkish opposition krcritic, a cleric living in exile in pennsylvania without filing the proper Foreign Agent paperwork. Flynn was also accused of being part of a plot to kidnap the cleric and return him to turkey in exchange for 15 million. Thats still being investigated. About a month after the news of that plot broke, flynn entered a guilty plea in the special counsels investigation. Despite the other allegations against him, prosecuters allowed him to plead guilty to one count of lying to fbi agents about the conversation with the russian ambassador. Its still a serious charge it carries a prison time and fines. Flynn became a cooperating witness for Robert Muellers investigation and hes not the only one. The mueller team has now assembled a roster of Trump Associates who are cooperating with the investigation besides flynn. They include Trump Campaign adviser trump papadopoulos, Campaign Aide rick gates who worked with Paul Manafort and george nader, a man with connections to the rulers of the arab emirates. This is the complexity of this story. Joining me now is our justice correspondent, pete williams, and special prosecuter jill wine j winebanks. Pete, the reporting from the wall street journal that the redacted in jim comeys memos is Vladimir Putin, that Vladimir Putin allegedly called donald trump first after his election. What do we snow. Well, what the memo is saying is that this is the something that came up during jim comeys dinner at the white house. The one on one dinner with the president on january 28th. And toward the end of the memo he says the president said that he had some concerns about mike flynns judgment. Reservations about flynns judgment and he used this story to illustrate it. He said he was this was a lunch, apparently, with the british prime minister, theresa may, and that he raised a glass to toast her and said you were the first to call me after my inauguration and congratulate me. According to the memo the president said flynn interrupted him at that point and said no, no, it was redacted. Thats the black box you showed in the brackets, redacted. And apparently thats putin. So filling in the blanks here, flynn interrupted to say putin had called first, apparently. It was then the president learned of the putin call and confronted flynn about it. And basically said, look, telling me six days after somebody calls so i can call them back isnt the right thing to do. According to the memo, the president pointed fingers at his head and said the guy has serious judgment issues. And, of course, it was a short time after that that flynn was fired. Jill, lets just remind viewers of how donald trump portrayed himself during the campaign. We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order. There can be no prosperity without law and order. I will restore law and order to our country. I am the law and order candidate. This went on many, many times, but then he as late as this morning puts out a tweet stumping for Michael Flynn, basically, who he said he fired for lying to the Vice President. A guy who we know now was not really all that much of a law and order guy. It seems to be a lot of disdense between what trump says about himself and what he does. He has pardoned arpio and Scooter Libby with messages to others you dont have to cooperate with law and order. Flynn, clearly he didnt act on the information he had from president obama and others that flynn was not to be trusted. He should never have hired flynn, and he should have fired him immediately upon getting the information from sally yates about what he had done, because he lied to the fbi as well as to the Vice President , and it was known that he could be compromised by the russians and yet, for 18 days President Trump kept flynn on board. Why did he do that . I dont know. Except it does seem leek it has like it has something to do with his unusual relationship with putin. Pete, there was more stuff from the memos about trump versus comey as it related to Michael Flynn. The big point for the memos are details of interaction between Reince Priebus and james comey as it related to questions about whether comey was investigating Michael Flynn at the time. Right. This was a february 8th meeting at the white house where he says Reince Priebus said do you have an order on mike flynn. According to the memo, comey paused, gave him an answer, but as he said in his interview last night with rachel maddow, he wanted to use it as sort of a teachable moment to say ill answer your question now, by the way, the memo does not say what the answer was. He said in the future if you want to know this sort of stuff, heres how you do it. Go through the Justice Departme department. Jill, the president apparently mentioned the dossier many times, steele dossier in having a conversation with jim comey. What if anything should we read into that . He was obviously concerned about it. I think weve now seen that there are is possible corroboration of the memo, the dossier. We have some information that possibly mueller has proof that cohen was in prague as the dossier says. So far nothing in the dossier has been disproved, so we can assume that there is some credibility to it, and it makes some pretty serious allegations about collusion. And although we hear the president in capital letters screaming no collusion, that does not make it true. And the investigation isnt finished yet. So we dont know what the evidence is. He may be correct that there isnt, but so far there is plenty of evidence that suggests that there is collusion. That they worked together with the russians, collusion not being the crime but conspiracy, working with the russians being the actual crime. Pete williams, jill, thank you for joining me. President trumps new personal attorney is a long time friend, Rudy Giuliani. Well dig into why trump picked him and why Rudy Giuliani says hes taking the job. I even accept i have a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem. But no matter where i ride, i go for my best. So if theres Something Better than warfarin, ill go for that too. Eliquis. Eliquis reduced the risk of stroke better than warfarin, plus had less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis had both. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. The president s legal team is growing once again after the hiring of Rudy Giuliani and the statement provided by trump, the president said rudy is great. Hes been my friend for a long time. He wants to get this matter quickly resolved for the good of the country. Beside being friends, what does the president want Rudy Giuliani his legal team for . Rudy giuliani spent nearly six years as the u. S. Attorney for the Southern District of new york. The same office that rated trumps personal raided trumps personal Lawyer Office and hotel room last week. During his time in the office he prosecutered the mob, wall street bankers, government officials and drug crime in new york city on a federal level and supervised among others, james comey. Giving him the take no prisoners litigation background and personal connections with the president that the president wants. Now, after resigning his post as u. S. Attorney, giuliani was eventually elected mayor of new york city. During his administration, he took a very tough stance on crime and drug use endorsing the broken windows theory that increased Police Activities like stop and frisk. Supporters credit the citys low crime rate to Rudy Giulianis tactics, but others say his policies unfairly targeted minority communities. With the law and order brand and eight years as mayor, he became a new york icon and later a National Icon in the wake of the attack on the world trade center. During the campaign, Rudy Giuliani was a vocal supporter of candidate trump. Taking to the campaign trail, and during that time, perhaps the most appealing trait now is in the days before the election, Rudy Giuliani claimed to have contacts within the fbi leading to interviews like this. Youre going to hear about in the next few days. I mean, im talking about some pretty big surprises. I heard you say that this morning. What do you mean . Youll see. Stay tuned. Well, just two days later then fbi director james comey announced the bureau resumed the investigation into Hillary Clintons use of a private email server. The kind of news that may have helped lift the candidacy in the fading days of the campaign. Joining me now is our legal analyst and formNick Ackerman. He served as an assistant u. S. Attorney for the Southern District of new york overlapping with Rudy Giuliani for a time. Nick, good to see you. Good to see you. I laid out why Rudy Giuliani. The problem with Rudy Giuliani is that hes mercurial and temperamental. The president has picked as much of a fight as you can pick with james comey. Im not sure anybody who lives in new york or knows Rudy Giuliani or was here after and since he was mayor thinks hes the kind of guy you bring in to bring things to an end. If the fight is in full force, maybe you want Rudy Giuliani there because he comes in with two machine guns. I agree. He is not the guy who is going to be brokering a good deal. Hes not the kind of person youd want to do that. On the other hand, he is the only person on that team of lawyers that even has any kind of experience dealing with the u. S. Department of justice on criminal matters, in white collar crime. Hes bringing two other people who are former assistants with him that were, i believe, assistants in some u. S. Attorneys office. So who knows the Southern District of new york well and the judges and the prosecuters. At the end of the day, t not going to make a difference. The reason is because the primary lawyer who is really running the operation here is donald trump himself. Right. I cant imagine for a minute that he is going to bear his soul to Rudy Giuliani and tell him what happened. Hes not going to give the strategy over to Rudy Giuliani. He is going to pick the legal strategy and whatever that is, come hell or high water, his lawyers are going to be forced to go with that strategy. Rudy giuliani gave an interview yesterday to the Washington Post in a respectful tone toward the special counsel. He said im doing this because im hoping we can negotiate an end to this for the good of the country, and because i have high regard for the president and for bob mueller. Im wondering whether theres something there. I dont know what Rudy Giulianis relationship to mueller would be or would have been at the time. Maybe you do. But is that the key to the castle here . That Rudy Giuliani maybe has something that he can talk to bob mueller about to smooth things over . Im sure theres a relationship. Perhaps i havent looked at the time line, but when Rudy Giuliani was u. S. Attorney in manhattan, mueller may have been the u. S. Attorney in boston. I mean, there may be that connection which is possible. There is this whole group of former u. S. Attorneys that get together all the time. There may be a personal relationship. Theres a personal relationship, but is that going to rule the day . I dont think so. I keep coming back to the fact that in the last 24 hours Rudy Giuliani has taken a conciliatory tone, a respectful tone. But its not i want to remind our viewers of Rudy Giuliani. Listen to this. We must not be afraid to define our enemy. It is islamic extremist terrorism. You know who you are. And were coming to get you. Hillary clinton has played a very big role in the development of isis. Theres a surprise youll hear about in the next two days. I mean, im talking about some pretty big surprises. I heard you say that this morning. What do you mean . Youll see. Tremendous amount of evidence was destroyed by the fbi, by the people working for her. They used extraordinary methods that only criminals use to destroy emails, acid, bleach. They used hammers. All i heard were former fbi agents telling me that theres a revolution going on inside the fbi, and its at a boiling point. They were going to give me therapy food. I think theyd give me something else. The reality is theyre a bunch of spoiled cry babies. People have run into problems in this investigation because they talk too much and talk too much on tv because they say things. Rudy giuliani with the passage of time is not getting as people get older, sometimes they mellow. Thats not happening to Rudy Giuliani. Hes come unhinged. Thats kind of a problem in this investigation. I mean, look, i think hell be able to meet with mueller. I think theyll be able to put all this craziness aside, but again, hes confronted with the evidence. The evidence here is downright damming, and i just dont see how hes going to get around that. The walking in of a new guy doesnt solve the underlying problem. Robert mueller has what he has or is getting what hes getting. And youre dealing with a client who is also totally unhinged, is not going to give him the true facts and is going to be directing him what to do and not taking his advice. When you put that all together, it really isnt going to make that much difference other than the fact at least theyll have people on the legal team that know something about criminal law and white collar practice and how to deal with the department of justice. Maybe that will be a help help. Thank you very much, nick. Stick around. I have another story i want to talk to you about. A new report released minutes ago from the Washington Post. We just got this. The Democratic National committee has filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the russian government, the Trump Campaign, and the wikileaks organization. Alleging a farreaching conspiracy to disrupt the 2016 campaign and tilt the election to trump. The complaint has been filed in Federal District court in manhattan. It alleges top Trump Campaign officials conspired with the russian government and the military spy agency to hurt democratic president ial nominee Hillary Clinton and help trump by hacking the Computer Networks of the Democratic Party. Since Nick Ackerman is with me, i want to put this to you. The Mueller Campaign has been chugging along. I cant believe that another investigation will get more information than muler is able to do, but maybe this is democrats worried that trump might fire mueller and try to get rid of the investigation because it seems to have similar parameters to the Mueller Investigation. I think this is where the big indictment is going to come down. Its going to relate to the federal hacking statute for hacking into the Democratic National committee. I think what a lot of people dont realize is that federal statute which is a criminal statute, also has within it the right for individuals and organizations to bring a private right of action. So that if they have been injured by virtue of a violation of the federal hacking statute, they have a right to go into federal court and file a lawsuit. The Democratic Party has standing in this case . Absolutely. Im surprised its taken them this long to figure this out. Whats good is they can go in, file their lawsuit. They have the right to take discovery and get depositions and documents. So they can get in tandem at the same time the Mueller Investigation is going on. And they can really dig into this. The problem, of course, is that the russian aspect of this, it is almost impossible to get discovery overseas. I mean, the criminal side has the same problems as well. And theyre obviously not going to be the same resources. Right. Theyre not going to have the same resource. They have to pay for lawyers to do this. Is there something they can get that the Mueller Investigation cant get or is it extra pressure . Extra pressure. Its good pressure. Youre requiring people to come in. You have testimony. Youre getting documents, and it sort of is a backstop so if mueller is fired, theyve got this going on. Also there is a computer statute in new york state that is as good or maybe better than the Computer Fraud and abuse act which is the federal statute. I think a lot of people are looking at how can we make certain that justice is done in this case. Right. Does anybody, whether its the Mueller Investigation or this new case, they have the ability to they can subpoena, i guess, the russians who are solved. It doesnt necessarily mean theyll show up in court. Thats right. They have the available to subpoena computers in the united states, to look at i. P. Addresses, the internet protocol addresses that can be traced back to the russians. And they have the ability to do that from within the united states. It does give the Democratic National committee a good basis to try and put together the factual predicate for all of this, and to do it in a context of a federal lawsuit in the Southern District of new york. Interesting development. Thank you again. Thank you for sticking around. Todays the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre where 12 students and one teacher were murdered. Right now student activists are speaking on capitol hill where hundreds are gathering and demonstrating for gun control. Its part of National School walkout. Its for people who have been hospitalized for a heart attack. Brilinta is taken with a lowdose aspirin. No more than 100 milligrams as it affects how well brilinta works. Brilinta helps keep platelets from sticking together and forming a clot. In a clinical study, brilinta worked better than plavix. Brilinta reduced the chance of having another heart attack. Or dying from one. Dont stop taking brilinta without talking to your doctor, since stopping it too soon increases your risk of clots in your stent, heart attack, stroke, and even death. Brilinta may cause bruising or bleeding more easily, or serious, sometimes fatal bleeding. Dont take brilinta if you have bleeding, like stomach ulcers, a history of bleeding in the brain, or severe liver problems. Slow heart rhythm has been reported. Tell your doctor about bleeding new or unexpected shortness of breath any planned surgery, and all medicines you take. Today marks 19d years since the mass shooting at Columbine High School shook the nation to its core. 12 students and one teacher were shot and killed in what was at the time one of the worst School Shootings in history. Today students are fighting back against gun violence with a National School walkout. First, i want to remember the columbine victims. They died so long ago and many are not known. Cassie, bernall was 17. Her parents said she loved to rock climbing. Steven curnow. He loved star wars movies and sto soccer. Cory depooter planned to join the marines. Kelly fleming was a sensitive girl who loved reading. Matthew kectter was a Football Player and pro mewrestling fan. Danielle mauser was best friends with his sister. Rachel scott was 17. Her parents say she wrote hundreds of letters to god in her journal. Daniel rohrbaough enjoyed computer games. William dave sanders coached at the school. His daughter said he helped save students by clearing the cafeteria out just before the shooter went inside. He was shot while running toward the gunman. 18yearold Isaiah Shoels wanted to become a record producer. John tomlin was 16 and looked forward to joining the army after graduation. Lauren townsend was 18. And 16yearold kyle value us kwezs parents called him a gentle giant who loved to help his dad around the house. I want to bring in lane murdock. She came up with the idea for todays walkout. Lane, thank you and all of the students who have done what you have done to keep this movement alive. Tell me why you think this is useful. Whats the end result . What happens . Is this so we cover it . Is it for kids to get involved . Is there some greater good you hope to achieve . I think its a mix. I think this is important because students have been told to kind of shut up and watch what happens. And were not going to do that. Frankly, i think were all tired of decisions that arent being made by us are getting us hurt in schools. All right. What is the i know when i was at the march for our lives in washington, you couldnt go too many blocks without seeing a signup, a registration for voting. Many have said that unless thats where this leads, unless kids and their parents vote for people who will change gun laws, were going to have walkouts and memorials were years to come. Could you repeat the last part . Sorry. If you arent db ultimately you have to get the students to register to vote and get their parents to make sure they vote for people who will support change when it comes to gun control laws. Yeah. Thats right. Thats why its really important that we have early Voter Registration at our schools. Weve been giving materials to do so. Getting them to show up is whats important. I want to talk about the sort of change we have seen so far. Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords tweeted this morning that after columbine americas politicians said never again. But after nearly two decades of inaction, its clear they failed in their basic duty to keep our kids safe. Do you think to her point, change will come . Do you think the politicians are warned by these demonstrations . Yeah. So many of them are Still Standing by the fact that its not guns that are the problem. I think change will come. I think its because no matter how much power or how much money you have, you cant control time. And time is on our side. Were going to grow older and take office. Were going to start voting. So change will come. Really right now its just about the power of momentum. Celebrities like Robert De Niro and others wrote excuse notes for students attending the walkout. Its tongue and cheek, but theres an underlying problem. Weve heard about this and i have heard about it on my twitter feed. A lot of schools dont welcome these kinds of demonstrations. Some go further. They impose disciplinary action on some of these students and yet, the students dont want to do it. What do you say to kids facing disciplinary action . Yeah. So i think as far as disciplinary action and things like that, i think its important for people to remember this is an act of civil disobedient. Its important kids stay safe and the schools are safe but they realize that change doesnt come without some sort of consequence. And i think right now the youth of america are tired of not being heard and are willing to accept that consequence. Were looking at a demonstration from earlier today in washington d. C. Where you are. Weve been showing video. A lot of people wearing orange as you are. Tell me about that. Yeah. Orange is the color of the gun violence prevention. Its the color that has been adopted by many groups. And for us wearing orange is important, because it also symbolizes the color that can unite us. Orange and gun violence in general affects communities that are marginalized and dont get the headlines when gun violence occurs. Lane, thank you for your political action. Lane murdock is a sophomore at Ridgefield High school. Ill leave you with a few shots of the demonstrations we have been taping throughout course of the morning. This is the ocean. Just listen. vo theres so much we want to show her. We needed a car that would last long enough to see it all. avo subaru outback. Ninety eight percent are still on the road after 10 years. There have been almost 17,000 incidents involving guns this year alone. This is just this year. The website reports almost 4300 deaths in 2018. Almost 7500 injuries. Since the parkland shooting at least six states enacted gun safety laws from background checks to for all firearm purchases to making it harder for anyone who is convicted of Domestic Violence to buy an own guns. Joining me now is captain mark kelley. Good to see you as always. Thank you for being with me. We saw each other the morning of the march for our lives in washington d. C. And you are you and gabby are optimists about change occurring. You said something that stuck with me. You said if all of this does not result in kids who can vote, registering to vote, those who register to vote and these kids influencing their parents to vote a certain way, it wont mean anything. Well, thats true. I mean, at the end of the day thats what really matters is who we elect to office and to elect people you have to turn out the right people to vote. These kids are incredibly motiva motivated. It seems like a turning point. We might be at the corner, but historically people under the age of 30 vote at a pretty abysmal rate. Weve seen positive signs in virginia this past fall. The rate went from 26 to 34 . The voting matters. You were gun owner and a Second Amendment supporter. How do you deal with some of the ugliness thats come out of this in which people who oppose what the students are doing have really gone out of their way to demonize them and suggest that they are there at the behest of the media and the left and things like that . Well, ive talked to a few of the kids about that. I mean, this is all really new to them. I mean, the vitriol out there on this issue probably is, you know, at the its probably the worst there is. You know, maybe up there with some womens rights issues, but theres some pretty nasty people out there, but i told them if youre going to be involved in politics at this level, you need thick skin. Dont spend a lot of time reading the comments on things you post. You got to do it a little bit. But, you know, it also gets easier over time. Dealing with that. Are we Getting Better or worse at having a discussion about gun safety and reasonable Regulation Without getting the backs of people who think any discussion about gun safety or gun regulation is an attack on the Second Amendment . I mean, i think its easy to hold both thoughts that you can support the concept of the Second Amendment and at the same time believe in regulation about the use and purchase of guns. We are Getting Better. Without a doubt. I mean, the politics on this issue is clearly changing. I mean, just evidence of that is just this past december, the nras top priority was conceal to carry ros prosty. There were ten moderate republicans that voted against the bill. Thats much different than when the vote was previously on that same piece of legislation. I think it was in 2012. Weve come a long way on the politics. You can talk about gun safety and stronger gun laws, but also be a supporter of the Second Amendment like i am, like gabby is. We are gun owners. Ive been a gun owner my entire adult life. This is not about taking guns away from responsible people. This is about safety in our communities, safe in our schools. These kids get it. Theyve been put in an incredibly awful situation that they have to go to school and worry about getting shot. And we can have it both ways. We can have firearms for people that protect themselves. At the same time not make it easy for people who are criminals or mentally ill dangerously to get guns. Lets talk about the walkouts today or the march for our lives, and somehow this movement has been able to coalesce and bring people in whose concerns are different. The plight of kids in urban centers where there are lots of guns and gangs are being included in this. I think thats sort of an important development. There are a lot of kids worried about being shot not by somebody with a semi automatic weapon who comes into their school but maybe somebody already in their school or somebody on the way home or somebody in their neighborhood. Yeah. Well, the kids from parkland, you know, were i mean, they were really smart to do this. It was the right thing to do. They wanted to. They understand that this issue affects different students in different ways. If you live in inner city, a poor inner city community, gun violence is something that maybe youre not thinking about when youre at school, but youre thinking about it as youre going to school. Or coming home every single day. You know, this is a complicated issue. Theres not one reason why we have 36,000 people dying from gunshot wounds every year and another 80 to 100,000 shot and injured. Its complicated and affects different people in different ways. It was great to see the kids from other communities be a part of the march in d. C. And because its complicated, we have to look at it in different ways and be nuanced in our conversation which is where i think were going. Thank you to the work that you and Gabby Giffords have done. Its april 20th, a day internationally recognized as a celebration of weed. Its a high time that cannabis supporters are growing support signaling a green gave mawave i country. After a surprise announcement by Chuck Schumer who plans to introduce legislation today to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. Ive seen too many peoples lives ruined because they had small amounts of marijuana and served time in jail much too long. It affects communities of color disproportionately and unfairly. And ultimately, its the right thing to do. Challenges still remain in the legal weed market like the Sky Marketing price. Jacob zoberoff is live where the doors are open and people are filing in. Talk to me about what is going on. Reporter ali, if you are a fan of marijuana in america, this is a remarkable time to be alive. Something like 200 million americans live in states where you can have access to recreational or medicinal marijuana. Here in california, on the first of this year, recreational sales started in the biggest state in the union for sales like that. This is one of the biggest chains in the country opening a store on fifth avenue in new york where they only have medical sales. Today they have a lot of specials going on. Come with me. This almost feels like an apple store. We were here on the day reck s recreational sales start. You can get edibles, prerolled joints, all kinds of stuff like that. The reason i say it is a remarkable time is because even though theres recreational sales here in california and in eight other states throughout the union, theres been an an tagnistic posture of people saying, good people dont smoke marijuana. They rescinded the cold memo put out after the Obama Administration that directed them not to interfere with states where they had Legal Marijuana sales. But in the last couple of weeks, cory gardner, the senator from colorado, has reportedly struck a deal with President Trump, basically a rebuke to the attorney general saying hell allow the department of justice to go through if the federal government lays off states where there is recreational and medicinal marijuana. Still a lot of the x factors. Thats why the news from senator Chuck Schumer today is sop important. If marijuana is legalized nationwide and decriminalized, that would take a lot of pressure off the states. They still want it to be a state level issue. State by state, hes voting to legalize the recreational use. But if the cannabis was rescheduled from the controlled substance, level one, it would open up the way for businesses like this, not just in california, not just in eight other states, but throughout the entire united states. It is 8 56 in the morning there. Is this because it is 4 20 because, or theres a sale, or is this place usually that busy at this hour . Its not even 9 00 in the morning. Reporter ali, i have to tell you, im having trouble hearing you. But one thing i do want to say to you, come with me. If you have never been to a place like this before, it almost feels like youre in a cvs. This is about the legalization, the regularization of marijuana. Stoner on his shirt. Thats what you do hereme. And youre proud to be one. Yes, i am. Reporter when you check out, it is like a Retail Operation in america. This could be the future of what is to come across the country. California is the great big experiment. A couple things to lookout for, number one, the cost of can this is becoming prohibited for some people. The taxes that they have here, 40 in some cases. This is driving people to the black market. Come here to get a sniff of the stickyicky. This stuff is expensive, thats the reality behind it that could lead to a shortage come july when the gas period for reck s recreational sales and the highly regulated places in this state sell cannabis. So i want to send it back to you, both because of the transmission issues and there are a lot of excited people buying weed out here.
