Aspen for our Aspen Security Forum there. Here is ali for velshi ruhle. Hello everyone, i am ali velshi, it is wednesday, july 17th, stephanie is on assignment. House speaker is expected address last nights stunning vote. The first last night and again and this morning the president attacked the four women on twitter and calling them names and thanking them for his polling number. Demonizing not only immigrants but communities of color. There are no bottom of the barrel of this. To stifle those who wants to advance rights for all people of the United States. Each of us bring our unique and authentic voice to this body. We govern in our own way. We are four women who have al n alignment of values. There is no insurgency here or for conspiracy. President trump is expected to continue his attack on these women in a rally. I want to talk a little bit more about the president and his comments. The house is going to vote today on a resolution to impeach President Trump as a measure thats being pushed by democratic representative, al green who says the president s recent comment demonstrates that hes unfit to be president. It all started when the president tweeted on sunday telling four congresswomen of color toll thd them to go back where they came from. On monday, his attack continues. These people in my opinion hates our country. If you are unhappy and complaining all the time, you can leave. All i am saying is if they want the leave, they can leave. President trump is condemning those tweets but it was backed by four republican members. So far 36 of 250 republican lawmakers say they condemn the comment. Thats 14 of the house and the senate and trumps ally, Anthony Scarramucci called out trumps tweet as racist and unacceptable. America is a nation of immigrants and founded on the idea of free thought and free speech. Anthony scarramucci is joining me now. We have to dip into pelosi when she talks about this. No problem. There is a sort of story where people become immigrant family, sort of a handshake and wink of an eye. Everybody who got an immigrant sounding last name or the colors are different have heard some version of go back to where you came from. Have you heard that . I personally have not heard it but my grandpa and grandma he heard it. They got here, where italians apply. So we had discrimination in our society and segregation of all these issues. Society is add vvancing and progressing, it is a wonderful experience to be in. I dont want to beat on it all day. I made my comment, the comments are unacceptable from the president. Theyre all racist. I support the president but i dont think we are advancing this societys agenda going that direction. The women hes attacking, hes giving them great standing and not just here on cable and developed ways. Totally. Theyre calling her racist and theyre fighting each other so the president could have let it go. He then called them racist or antisemantic based on their comments. Saying go back to their country, it is a whistle for everybody. First it is me and it is your family and it is the next family and at domino Effect Division i our country, it is not american. We dont think like that. I dont want to be on a dead horse. I am surprised republicans are not being honest with the president. Thats an interesting point. Being honest with the president is the question. Joe mccarthy exhausted this system. You get everybody riled up and they get exhausted and they drop it and the minute they drop it, you lose your standings so you get so many good things to run and economy and growth and Free Enterprise system and des desegregati desegregati desegregation. One of the reasons you were at the white house, you said you enjoyed a Good Relationship with the president. I have not talked him greatly, i like him a great deal, i like him enough to tell the truth. Whats the message for him right now. I get the point, you want to label the Democratic Party as that squad. If you do that successfully and they pull those candidates over to their positions, you are likely get a 40state landslide. Drop the state rhetoric, thats going to upset 15 of the people in the middle that are moderates and would like to vote for you, wait a minute, thats not flavor full for me, im go with somebodys policy that i dont like. It is a one and house thing with the president. Focus on what you are doing. Very good for the country and how you are doing it. It is part of your narrative and you come from a family, this is not enough to cause donald trump your support at this point . Not at this point. If he keeps ongoing in that direction. Lets put up on the screen. I see the stuff he said. I know what i said. I have seen the whole thing. It is birthism and calling mexicans rapists and and hole countries. On the flip side, he has great policies and lower employment rates in some area of the country. I see it. There is a mix bag of things. People can choose from the bag and say the president is racist or not. Knowing personally and seeing what he did during the Martin Luther king jr. Controversy 25 years ago where the New York Stock Exchange left open, getting close to honor dr. Martin luther king jr. To honor him on his holiday. Those are the kind s of things want to the see him do. The birther thing, i dont understand. I understand the average American Community let me tell about the birther thing. He said president obama go ahead. I can go through the list. I am not here to defend the list. How do you come to the conclusion that hes not racist when you see that list . The Average American will say things they regret. Theyll say things they wish to take back. I got fired for saying something i wish i could take back. Obviously that happens and so hes 73 years old, he got seven things listed there. When it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, you are not prepared to call him a duck . I am. When he continues on this path. You cant choose the person over the country. You cant choose the policies over the country. At the end of the day, i like the president and i want to be a loyal supporter to him but i love the country. And so you cant tell people go back to the other country. My grandparents who both have been dead for probably 20 or 30 years. They would cry at Something Like that. There is my uncle. What would they say that you are still not prepared to say that donald trump is racist. Those people or my cousins or blue collar workers, they like and support the president. If you are going to tell people to go back to the other country, theyre going to say okay at some point, we cant continue to support you. Tell us what you want to do. The republicans, if they all came out, there are 250 of them, hey, terrible, cant talk like that. I think the president would conform his behavior. He needs straightup, honest feedback and honest analytical assessment of Whats Going On. Whats happening in washington, i got to stay in power, i dont want to get primary or i dont want to say anything thats going to upset the president. I am going to keep my mouth shut. You are a good journalist, there are white house Aids Offensive what the president says is racist or unacceptable. Theyll whisper to you on the phone. You are one of my most wellrwell wellread friend. You quoted from kfjs book. In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces, if he follows his conscience the loss of his friends, his fortune for this, each man must look into his own soul. We obviously read that book. The point john f. Kennedy was making in that book. You have to step out of the system and politics and reflects Whats Going On and stand up for the society. Thats what we have to do. I dont like the squad or ideology. They are democratically elected officials. One was naturalized and others were born here. You and i have argued, we dont have same views of things but we do not tell each other to go back. What john f. Kennedy said is that he studied the other side. He wants to understand them and let me understand what they are thinking and saying and hes a guy that can hold and he oppose ideas in his brain and synthesize those. We need more statements like that. I got the president s point and the squads point. It is classically unamerican and we are progressing society now to a point where we should be postpartisan and identity for that. Nancy pelosi is speaking. Anthony scarramucci, thank you. Justice john paul stevens, he was a true guardian of the constitutions. He made history not only as long as serving as justice but one of its finest, our country mourns his loss. Hell be flying in state on monday, the service will be on tuesday and then again a great loss to our country. Last night i had a particular pleasant experience which was the sign of legislation which enables us to use the Washington Monument as a backdrop for the moon launch. Pretty exciting, i hope everyone will take advantage of observing that as we observe that historic event in our country. Here we are campaigning for our jean agenda. This week well have three bills on the floor, raising the minimum wage, it will increase wages for up to 33 million workers and lift 1. 3 million americans out of poverty. It will help secure fairness and equality for women. Giving nearly 20 million working women a raise and help narrow the gender gap, the disproportionately impacts women. We are proud to pass this bill tomorrow. All men and women were created equal. Well also continue doing our promises to workers. Today well honor our promise to the hardworking men and women of the labor as we lift the cadillac tax protecting Health Benefits that workers have negotiated. And next week, the house will move to pass the vote and ensuring millions of americans who receive requirementirements receive the retirements of benefits and security they have earned. These are the outcome of the back and forth on the census. Proud of the testimony the council makes for the supreme court. The census is a pillar of our democracy. A shrine in our sacred constitution to ensure that we are all equally counted and represented. And so, well continue and holding the Administration Accountable for the policy decisions, this is not about bipartisan shshi bipartisanship. It as we approach the 200day mark of our transit majority. House democrats were blown by the cost. Benefits and lowering Prescription Drugs and preserving the Preexisting Conditio condition benefits and some of that will be coming up next week. Hr1, part of hr1. We have divided into parts. Voting rights act and the rest and we are hoping to get some of these passed discreetly. Senator mcconnell have called himself the ripper, we have news for him as i have said before. These bills are alive and well with the public and Public Opinion and as lincoln have said we can make anything. Any questions . Is there a chance after this long wait t the report has brought some clarity and more people will know whats in the report. I think we should approach with all the appropriateness and seriousness of purpose. This is about our country and our constitution and the separation of powers of Obstruction Of Justice, issues like that. So i would say again it is about patriotism. Let us listen and see where the facts will take us and let us have this be as dig fnified as r constitution requires. Well go where the facts lead us. On the same subject . In terms of bringing up an impeachment. I have not seen his article of impeachme impeachment. Well deal with that resolution on the floor but i have said over and over again with all the respect in the world, hes a prayerful person and he cares a lot about your country. With all the respect in the world for him, we have six committees working and some on the facts and in terms of any abuse of power or Obstruction Of Justice that the president may engaged in. Not that mr. Green is not serious, well deal with it on the floor. I dont know what well do but well deal with it on the floor. Thank you. What are the counting blocks to get this done . Lets start with next week and engineer back. We would like to have something on the floor next thursday so that we can send it in a timely fashion so they can go through their shall we say particularly senatorial process. If we are talking about next thursday, we have to backup until this friday to have an agreement reached so we can dually noted because under the new rules, we dont count weekends in the 72 hours notice so well have to have something that we can post sometimes this weekend so that the time takes away in order for us to go the floor. Well have to do all of that by friday evening. What are the policies [ Inaudible Question ] it is all about money, right . Is there a certain number . I said yesterday and if you read my letter, it was very clear. Our concern is the Additional Initiative that have been added for veterans whether you approve, to cover them, we dont think that should be becoming out of the regular base and so we dont want the veterans and resources to be competing with each other or competing with other very valuable domestic priorities. I think we are understanding each other and when we have an announcement, you will be the first to know. Were you surprise that more republicans did not side with democrats and what did you think at the end of the day was achieved given it was essentially well, the fact that this is was a resolution of the house and not some legislation as you go to senate and be signed by the president and it was for us to say and by the way, in the most gentle way you have no idea the provisions that some people want to have in their resolutions. This is benign and it condemns the words of the president , not the president but the words of the president and doing so it anchored itself in the words of Ronald Reagan. Ronald reagan, beautiful speech byr by Ronald Reagan which i referenced all the time. You would thought that benign approach may have appealed the them. When you say were you surprised or were you disappointed . My expectations were not great but you also hope they may do the right thing and say that language that the president used was underneath the dignity of the president and the president who hes criticizes and by the way, we were offended that he spoke in such a way of Members Of Congress and we are offended that he says things like that all the time go back to where you came from. By extension of his words are racism. Go back and look at ap or certain places thats where they define it. The words he used were races ir. That was as gentle as it could be in the appropriate nature of what the president said. We did what our members wanted us to do. We had a strong 100 vote. This fight is no, madominat the are you concerned . With all due respect, lets not waste or time on that. We are talking about what we are going to do to help the american people. Our caucus is unified on all of that, throughout the whole campaign. I said to the candidates dont everyone mention his name. Everybody knows who he is, you dont have to describe him to anybody. Well devote the whole month of august for the people which is successful and connecting with people and their concerns. It is still the cost of healthcare and the stagnation of wages and distrust of government are still alegumlooming large a concerns for the american people. Thats what we are going to be about. We are not having him set our agenda, we are setting our own agenda. Do you have any concerns on the focus on impeachment day relating to or jeopardizing Robert Muellers appearance . No. We did our resolution and well deal with mr. Greens resolution. We do have to have a clear path. I do think that the president is trying to and we cant and you cant and we cant buy into his false bidding. He knows, we all know the argument that can be made against us in terms of our philosophy or in terms of our priorities and the rest. The president knows the argument that could be made against him and therefore he wants to distract from him. You have to give him credit. Hes a great distractor and thats what it is about. Lets take it to a better place, america, the president wants to make America Great again, we all do. What does it mean . So many times we come together and we talk about america as our ideal in the constitution, an example of the world of the founding documents that rejected and put forth separations of power. The legislative of france having the priority of listening and thats being dishonored by the president of the United States. There is america, we are the people. Nation of immigrants, by and large and hes demograding all the newcomers coming to our country. This america, this beautiful land from Sea To Shining sea and beyond. It is gods gift to us that hes almost everyday but certainly every week degrading and saying that not going to deal with climate on the basis of any science . Really . What is america . Our values and thats the debate we have all the time and the budget and the rest in terms of how we invest in our childrens future and how these things all come together and under the guidance of our founders, we the people, they said in the preamble to the constitution. They also say for anyone could imagine how many or how different we would be. We had to be one. That beautiful guidance is something as constantly as we keep in mind as we engage in our differences. At the end of the day, we want to be refined and not divided. I wish the president knew that. Thank you all very much. Nancy pelosi delivering comments on the resolution to impeach President Trump today and what she thinks the president s strategy is verses what democrats strategy is with respect to the country and the president and respect to what she calls the president s remarkable ability to distract americans from issues they would be talking about. Lets go to kelly odonell who was listening to this as well. What did you take from that . What was the most important thing . Reporter Speaker Pelosi is trying to turn down the temperature and not create another issue where there could be a flare up between her caucus and the white house and putting the pressure back on the president. This was Speaker Pelosi carefully plotting some of the steps, she did not preview how the Impeachment Inquiry brought by. Congressman green of texas could handle, she could have signalled which way she wants to go with that, she did not do that and keeping the temperature down. The resolution condemning the president s tweets was something that had in effect had been water down from the suggestions of the caucus, some were more harsh than the president s words and want to make a stronger statement and she tailored it trying to be a bit more and holding into account and not trying to ins gatigate another fight. The president is going to have his rally tonight. This is the day Robert Mueller was testifying. Thats rescheduled for next week. The president was going to have a big Arena Crowd Type Event where he can vent on all these issues and so now well have the juxtaposition from pelosi. He would be attacking them for another personal characteristics or their Life Experience but their positions. A lot of that gets murky when you begin to make those challenges. The issue is the president trying to make these four women Members Of Congress, the face of the Democratic Party a new Counter Point to nancy pelosi for the president to run against. Speaker pelosi is trying to keep this i thin things calmer today after what has been an eventful week today. I want to bring in kasie hunt. You were talking about things that kelly mentions that was supposed to be happening today and that was the mueller testimony. You asked nancy pelosi question about mueller. Reporter thats under the radar and the conversation of the sudden focus on this impeachment may impact whether or not when mueller comes next week under the terms democrats are looking for. Those conversations are still underway. It is supposed to be today and they put it off for week. They wanted more Members Of Congress to be able to ask questions of Robert Mueller. Nancy pelosi was quick to dismiss it. She calls the president the great distractor, hes been driving this conversation about racism and immigrants through the tweets he put out on sunday and thats the focus, more than half way through the congressional week and Congressman Green we should point out have done this before. This should not be acceptable. The racism should not be acceptable from a chief executive. Thats the ground. There is a couple of different options procedural so to speak. They are going to have to grapple with this in some way and people are going to have to be on the record and some democrats want to talk about it and it is not necessarily what the center of the leadership of the party wants to be focused on today. So, you know well see if in fact they do move off of it quickly or not, the reality, ali, what the president did anything, papered some significance positions and quote on quote squad and getting everybody on the same page. Well see if thatll hold as we continue. Nancy pelosi did not want to get baited into the conversation of the squad about these four Members Of Congress other than to say what the president did was incorrect. She was not taking any conversations or any questions that had to do with that continuing conversations. In other words, you are calling it paper over. She did not want that to be central of the conversation. Reporter division between her and the squad is not something she wants to talk about. There has been some incidents that have made members angry, some of them have been what the Chief Of Staff have said on twitter and accusations kind of flying back and forth and personal insult and pelosi spoke with more in doubt in that column. That sort of set this all off and it was a week ago when we had a Press Conference where she got really sharp in the face of questions about that and essentially tried to shut it all down. It is not a place that she wants to be. I thought it was a little interesting in the press Conference Today the said the resolution they passed yesterday was if anything, she did not use the word water down, it could have been much further. She said to us you would not believe what some people wanted to put in this resolution. I thought it was an interesting way framing what some of her members likely wanted. Shes steering this in a direction focusing on Ronald Reagan, and his icon and away from these divisions in the party. Thank you to kelly odonell and kasie hunt. Well monitor this conversation and bring you more. I am going to be speaking to Bernie Sanders shortly. Hell be making a significant speech about healthcare for his proposal for all later on. President trump continues his attack against the four congresswomen of color. Did you know because i didnt know this, 5 of Congress Members were born abroad. I am going to talk to one of them. Liberty. Liberty. All right, welcome back to velshi ruhle. He healthcare is a key battle point for the democratic primary. Total healthcare costs under the plan advocated by senator Bernie Sanders is estimated cost of 4. 5 trillion over ten years. That sounds like a lot of money. Take a look at this. The estimate is 22 higher than total cost under the Current System over the same period. A lot of people dont get coverage right now. This would provide coverage to about 28 Million People who are currently insured. I am telling you we are currently unensured. Math is always hard. How are you go i think to ping this . Joining me is senator sanders. Bidens plan built on obamacare, it would allow people to keep their employers insurance if they like it or buy into a public option. If the plan that the Vice President is suggesting continues to include the essential Health Benefits of the Affordable Care implemented, why do you think thats not efficient . First of all, i will be getting back to the first point you made a moment ago. Every study shows medicare for all will cover all of the people in our country at less cost than the current dysfunctional system which at the end of ten years will be spending Something Like 50 trillion. Our healthcare is expensive. The reason i oppose with joe biden is at the end of the day we have got to do as a nation of what every one is doing is guaranteed healthcare to every man and and womwoman and child right. It is to make billions in profits for the Insurance Companies and drug companies, thats what they are doing today. Today despite the fact that 80 million americans have no Health Insurance or under insured. We are spending far, far more per capita on healthcare than the people of any other country. Today we pay by far the highest prices in the world for Prescription Drugs. I am going to be going from detroit to michigan and ontario, canada at the end of this month. Well be purchasiing insulin fo o onetenth of the price we are paying in america. We need to change the system. You will never get an argument. However there is as factory in the United States. According to the kaiser family, 49 have employer coverage. Gallup has found 69 of americans rated their healthcare as coverage. Talk to the people out there, my audience who have good insurance, why should they support the idea that they thing they think is good is going to go away in favor of head care for all. What medicare for all does is provide comprehensive healthcare to every man and woman and child in every country. Medicare for all is better. There will be no deductibles and copayments. They cant afford the out of Pocket Expenses because of high deductibles. Well lower Prescription Drugs. There will be a ceiling of what people have to pay for Prescription Drugs. What people like is not their Health Insurance company. What they like are their doctors and nurses and their hospitals. The medicare for all we guarantee freedom of choice. You can go to any doctor. There is no choosing from doctors in terms of what program and insurance they take. Exactly. Right now by the way, lets be clear. Many people cant go to the doctor that they would like to go because they thought it may not be in their Insurance Network and they have to pay a whole lot out of it. What well do is provide comprehensive healthcare to everybody at lower cost. All these other countries you and i have talked about instituted some version a long time ago, why america didnt, we built up this system and health Insurance Companies and we created this entire thing and there are a lot of people say thatll cost a great deal of corruption. Kamala harris is calling for a transition period saying we cant change it over night. Tell me what a transition looks like. Kamala harris is on board of my legislation. That Legislation Calls for a fouryear transition. First year right now, you got to be 65 or older to get into medicare. Medicare by the way as you know, ali, is the most popular Health Insurance program in the country. What well do is lower that eligibility age from 65 to 55. By the way, well expand benefits for seniors by including dental care and hearing aids and eye glasses. Next year we take it to 45 and 35 and the fourth year, all americans are covered by a comprehensive medicare program. Let me ask you about and i want you to go close here. My viewers are older. The musician cardi b. Car cardi b. Is one o f the most 25 most influential people online. She has been a long time supporter of yours in 2006. She said yesterday, she tweeted this out about voters letting you done in 2016. Whats your message . I thank you for her support. I spoke to her a few weeks ago, shes very sharp and understand a lot about politics and history and i am very appreciative to have her support. Okay. I want to talk about some polling that comes out. We got another poll that i think we got early today. You are showing as coming in second place in a couple of these polls, this is morning consult poll. You are at 19 and Elizabeth Warren is at 4 . Talk to me about polling and how do you feel about it . It is hard to poll nowadays because a lot of people dont answer their telephone. We are six and a half months before the election. I think it is probably fair to say that joe biden, if the election primary were held today, i would probably win. People know him and they like him. I think we have the Grass Root Support in this country. One of the points that has not been made as clearly as it should is that we have well over a million volunteers in this country. We have grass roots support in iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina and nevada. At the end of the day what primaries are about or caucus are about are bringing out your people. We have an excellent staff and we are investing in that staff and on election day, we are going to win. We are going to win because our agenda speaks to the need of the Working Class of this country. Frankly, people are sick and tired of the wealthy becoming much richer and Corporate America making huge profits and not just the Insurance Industry or the drug companies. It is the fossil fuel industry. It is all across the board and people want a government that reflects the need of ordinary people, not just the wealthy and the powerful. Thats why we are going to win this thing. Senator Bernie Sanders, always good to talk to you. Thank you for joining me. Thank you, ali. If you need any recommendations when you are in canada, let me know. I know a lot of people. I am going to speak to Congresswoman Nora Torres in california who says shes no stranger to go back to where you came from comment. It was that lift off that changed the course of history. President trump may have directed his racist go back remarks at four Democratic Women of color. 29 members of the house and senate were born abroad to be exact. Half of those to parents serving in the military or working overse overseas. Ted cruz was born in canada to an American Mother and cuban father. Hes a natural born. There are currently 14 Members Of Congress immigrated to the United States and became citizens through naturalization or a parents citizenship. We should know only one of the four member of congress that the president directed his tweet born in somalia and came to the United States at the age of 12. Shes currently the only former Refugee Serving in congress. Joining me now democrat of california who was born in guatemala and emigrated to the United States when she was five years old, congresswoman norma torres. Im curious because i had a conversation with somebody yesterday who said, look, people who are granted citizenship to this country should be grateful to the country and hence not criticize it. I thought that that was a conflating of two different things, right . Criticizing the country is not an ungrateful act, its not a traitorist act, its actually protected in the constitution, gratefulness isnt. Absolutely. And every single day when i put my hand up and i swear allegiance to our flag, old glory, and i end it with liberty and justice for all, it is those liberties and justices for all that guarantee me the right to disagree with the president of the United States. Simply disagreeing with him on legislative issues dz not make me unamerican. I wear my American Values in my heart and i display them every single day when i stand up against the bullyism thats coming out of the white house. What do you do about this . You and your colleagues are speaking out against the comments, some republicans, plenty of them now, are speaking out against it, but what happens . I mean, there is a resolution in congress, the first time in more than 100 years a resolution critical of the president like that has been passed, but in the end people are dug in, they are in their corners and there are more than a few people who probably listen to the president and said, he said what im thinking. Yes, and that is so unfortunate. And that is the cause of, i think you know, it is unfortunate the cause that this could bring violence against Members Of Congress, like myself, that happen to disagree with the president on a legislative issue. Unfortunately that does not make us less american than anyone else. The house is set to vote today on an impeachment resolution against President Trump introduced by your colleague congressman al green. In your view did the president s comments move a needle for you . Does that separate and apart from what you think about the president , did it move the needle on impeachment . Did it make it stronger . I think that that is separate and apart. I have based my calls for impeachment simply on what was on the mueller report. I believe that we need to start an Impeachment Inquiry after the caucus comes together and agrees on a process that we can move forward. You know, i fully support that and i just want to make sure that we are on record that this is not about one statement, that this is about out there public corruption that has come from the white house, specifically the president and his family members. Congresswoman norma torres, thank you for being with me today, congresswoman norma torres of california. Thank you. Three men, four days, 238,900 miles one way, a you will to fulfill a promise of a president who had died six years earlier. I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a Man On The Moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind or more important for the longrange exploration of space. All right. That mission was occurring 50 years ago right now. The Culmination Of Human Endeavor just 66 years after the first powered flight, 15 years after the first paper suggested an artificial satellite, six years after the first human left earths gravity, two human beings set foot on the surface of another world. It would forever change our world and the idea of what was possible. That was the apollo 11 mission, an effort that galvanized a nation and launched humanity beyond the earth. Its legacy today our human probes to the sun to the reaches of Interstellar Space to continuous presence on the International Space station, a mission that etched november 2nd, 2000 as the last time that every human was together on this planet. It is a feeling so few humans have actually had, the idea of looking back on earth and seeing its contours and seeing its shapes. Joining me now is somebody who has done that, former nasa astronaut, former Space Station commander and retired navy captain scott kelly. He holds the distinction of having spent a full year in space chronicled in his amazing book called endurance. The details of what it was to live in space. Scott, good to see you again. Lets just talk about the apollo 11 mission because we talk about so many other things in space, but this was a key moment of inspiration for so many young people that made them dream about space and exploration. Yeah, i think it was really the most inspiring thing that weve ever done. It really showed us what we were capable of doing, if we if we, you know, harnessed all of our resources in this country, put our minds to something that was a challenging problem and worked together. Youve mentioned to me and as have other astronauts that when you are up in space looking back at earth you see things differently. A lot of the fights that we are involved in right now, a lot of cultural battles, a lot of political battles feel a little different ones youve been out in space. Absolutely. You know, when you look at the earth from space, first of all, youre struck by absolute the absolute beauty of the planet, but then, you know, you realize when youre looking at continents you dont see political borders, i mean, you see land masses, you know there are people there, they have issues, you know, to solve those issues we just need we need to work together. When you are living on a Space Station that is so complicated, we know that the only way we are able to do that is through teamwork. There are people who worry about spending too much money on stuff thats not important. When you look back at the space program, you look back at apollo 11, you look back at the missions that led to that and the missions that came after, including the Space Shuttle missions that you flew, what do you tell people who say, why are we spending money on this . Well, you know, sometimes im asked, hey, why do we spend all that money in space . Well, you know, you need to realize that money was spent on earth with good jobs, you know, investing in people, investing in education because we need, you know, talented people to do these jobs. So its not like youre dumping money into a hole in outer space. That money is spent on earth and, of course, you know, there are priorities and, you know, things are more important there are certain things that are absolutely more important than the space program. So i think its just, you know, finding the right balance. The nasa administrator who is a space enthusiast talked about the place you lived at for a year, the International Space station. He talked about using it for a model for the future. Lets listen. We look at the International Space station, an amazing achievement of not just technology, but also diplomacy. 15 nations operating the iss, of course, the United States of america is the lead on it, but we want to take that coalition and we want to go all the way to the moon and, in fact, even grow it from there. He is talking about the coalition, thats not just countries like it was when we were dealing with apollo 11, but now its governments and private enterprise. Tell me how you look at that. Have we done something smart by saying, hey, there are some things that private enterprise can take over like shuttling people and things to the Space Station and governments and organizations like nasa should concentrate on other things . Well, first of all, i think the International Aspect of the space Station Program is one of its great successes. It shows us that doing complicated things you can do that with an International Coalition that allows you to spread the cost, it gives you redundancy, but also having companies like, you know, the boeing, spacex, blue origin involved they are able to do things a little bit leaner, a little bit quicker than traditional government programs. So i think right now between the international between International Cooperation and this kind of new, you know, Space Companies is really, i think, the wave of the future. Scott kelly, good to see you as always. Thank you for joining me on this important anniversary. Please tune in tomorrow we will be interviewing the nasa administrator. Thank you for watching velshi ruhle. I will see you back here at 3 00. You can watch or listen to velshi ruhle on tune in sirius xm radio, msnbc. Com now. The msnbc app or apple tv. Im still getting used to this, i am not familiar with the idea that you can watch us on all these different things. I want to hand it over to Chris Jansing now. Its cool. Not as cool as being in space. Would you go. I would. Good afternoon, im Chris Januarysling in for katy tur. It is 11 00 out west, 2 00 p. M.
