Good evening. Im chuck todd here in washington. Welcome to mtp daily. Its deja vu mtp daily. Its a joke gone bad. Inappropriate, and not surprising, oh, by the way, those are just the criticisms from members of trumps own party. Folks, this is a cycle weve watched play out again and again, for trump, where his party has little choice but to eject his rhetoric, even as they end up sort of sticking by him. Heres just a few examples. Hes not a war hero. Hes a war hero hes a war hero because he was captured. I like people that werent captured, okay . I hate to tell you. If you really want to be commander in chief and youre serious about that job, the last thing you would ever do is say anything that would show disrespect for anybody who served. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States. Were not going to follow that suggestion, that this particular candidate made. Obviously, were not going to do that. The judge who happens to be, we believe, mexican, which is great. I think thats fine. I think judge curiel should be ashamed of himself. Claiming a person cant do their job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment. Well, here we go again. The party finds itself hoping that trump will put a controversy behind him, and focus on a message. Here are just a few examples of republicans urging trump to change course. Karl rove, he must tone it down. Reince priebus, his rhetoric is going to have to evolve. Senator corker, trump is in a defining period over the next two to three weeks. Senator mcconnell. He ought to change directions. Paul ryan, hes going to endeavor to try to change. And folks, those comments may sound like they just happened, but, in fact, they are months old. You have to go all the way back to may 5th when trump became the presumptive nominee, and continuing through june and july, as trump has repeatedly found himself in crisis mode. So today, the campaign is aggressively trying to change the conversation, by pointing the finger at the press over the latest episode. In a fundraising pitch, donald trump jr. Says, you know, everything the media says about my father is all lies and spin, and they are all objectively false. Its a familiar counterattack for trump. He says something controversial, then come the headlines, then he addresses it, then he blames the media. Just a recent example of trump versus the khan family. If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably maybe she wasnt allowed to have anything to say, you tell me. But plenty of people have written that. I was viciously attacked on the stage of the Democratic National convention, by mr. Khan. And i responded to that vicious attack. And what happened the the press took it and made it a big deal. So what now for the Trump Campaign. Im joined by Trump Campaign cochair, sam clovis. Mr. Clovis, welcome back to the show, sir. Thank you, chuck. Good to be with you. I feel like youve been in this familiar space before. Youre in the middle of a controversy. And im asking you to say, whats going on . How are you guys going to refocus . And here we go again pip mean, you had a moment there last week when you had a bunch of people, republicans in the party, very upset about the khan controversy. Begging him to stay focused, stay on message, and then yesterday, sloppy again with language. I think the if you ever run for office, chuck, and i have, and i think that the key to success, no matter what the dynamics, whether how negative or positive the campaign may be, the key is to find to give people reasons to vote for you and not necessarily against someone else. We have a couple of candidates here that have some interesting negative numbers out there. I think that one of the things we really have to focus on is what are whats the message going to be from each Campaign Going forward. Are we going to find the ability to compare and contrast . Are we going to be able to highlight our economic plans . Our tax reform, trade reform, Immigration Reform . How were going to secure the country, how were going to recapitalize the military. How were going to address the deficit. All of those things ought to be that ought to be the message that we focus on Going Forward. All right. Youre the National Campaign cochair. I ask you, why is that not the focus Going Forward . Why has this been so difficult for the campaign to focus . Well, i think, really, the issue is, we are talking about those things. And im not going to sit here and throw bricks at the media, because i think, ive been through this now in the campaign for a year. We see what gets reported. You know, you have some unartful language, and then that becomes the news cycle as opposed to the hourlong message that gets out there, talking about all these reforms. And again, i think its the nature of what we are in right now, in this cycle. This is not like any campaign ive ever seen, chuck. Ive been following politics since 1956. I hear you, sam. Ive never seen anything like this. You know, words do matter. Yeah. And in fact well donald trump has made a lot of donald trump has gotten to where hes gotten because of his words, in some cases, more so than his policies. And now theyre getting him in trouble. You know well, if words matter, chuck doesnt words matter in this case . Well, if words matter, i think that lets lets take a look at some other examples here. Do words really matter to the president of the United States, in the fact that we cannot identify the existential threat that we have to this nation . Do words really matter to the former secretary of state, who stands up and clearly lied to congress, and now that we have the occupation of the issues associated with her emails, do words really matter, chuck . Or is it whats being reported about those words . Because if words matter, if words matter, then we would have this equal and balanced approach to this, and we would be talking about the president of the United States and the former secretary of state. Well, look, i guess, you know, on this front, though, he went out of his way to talk about this, and the fact of the matter is, lets lets i take you at your word, that he didnt mean what some people took out of it. But, the problem is, its who else is listening, right . This has always been the concern, and as president of the United States, a slip of the tongue i mean, look, you want to talk about president obama, he drew a red line and those words mattered. And its been something hes had to deal with. And it was a hard lesson for him, that words do matter. Donald trump is showing that hes got way too many times, where he has allowed his words to distract from a story, and as president of the United States, that could set up to being a diplomatic disaster. I think, you know, that one thing i dont want you to, you know, and youre not, chuck, youre a strong professional, and this is one of the reasons i love coming on your show, is because, you know, you do a very good job with this. But i caution not to conflate issues here. We have a candidate for president of the United States, and the thing you have to remember is that there are a lot of people you and i, that will go out here, you and i can discuss this over an adult be h beverage and we can get down to four decimal places on a lot of these things. But then you have to think about, do the american people, the people who are going to vote, are we really playing to that audience, or do we even know what that audience is . And chuck, you and i have talked about this before. I think a lot of times what happens inside the beltway isnt always whats going on in the real world out there. That, i hear you on. But let me ask you this. How do you right this ship right now . Because it does feel like its on defense, right . You guys are on defense. You know it, how do you right this ship . Whats your advice . I think its what ive said before. Always, always, always, you have to give people a reason to vote for you. And lets go out here and compare and contrast our plans, our ideas, the fact that mr. Trumps created tens of thousands of jobs that he has been part of the free market system in this country, and he understands all of this. And we have a tax plan and trade plan and immigration plans that are really really will set this nation on fire when it comes to the economy. And if the United States has a strong economy, the rest of the world will be at peace. This is really one of the things that over history, weve seen this. And i think this is one of our key selling points, and we ought to be out there pounding that every day, that our plan is going to put and allow us to reach that growth level, to have the ability to recapitalize our security, to do all of those things and every american is going to be better off because of it. Sam, you better be careful, there may become a draft effort by some republicans saying they want you on the ticket here. Well, my success your my success in elections is not good. This is one of the reasons im on the staff and not a candidate. Sam clovis, thanks for coming on today, appreciate it. Thanks, cluchuck, you bet. Let me bring in our panel tonight. Steve, i want to start with you. Sams more on message than the candidate. Absolutely. I mean and he always has a smile on his face when he does it. They dont have enough of that. You get the sense he has a campaign staff, actually some of whom like stam sam really know what theyre doing and know what the message should be and they tell the candidate and suggest to the candidate, its time to change direction, turn the page, but the candidate doesnt listen. This is a you know, you said it earlier in the show. Every single week, he does Something Like this. He steps on his own story. He interferes with his own campaign. And its becoming a really big problem for him. And before i let you defend here, and i know, i want to get molly on this, because the issue, it seems, is if what worked in the primaries is a little bit of this, hey, just let it go tistyle and it did wo. The problem now is, he is now being scrutinized as the president of the United States. I actually think voters werent scrutinizing him as a president. They were scrutinizing him as somebody to make a statement. Well, maybe, but they were also different voters, right . The general electorate that he has to talk to is a Different Group of people, concerned about a different and broader set of issues. But i agree with you. They are looking more for that president ial disposition. They are thinking more about things like you brought up, about like what kind of diplomatic situation a comment like this might create, for someone who was actually the president , wasnt just a reality tv star. So, yeah, things start to look differently through that lens. But look, theres a lot of voters out there, its maybe a closing window, but there are a lot of voters out there who are just tuning in now and are still open to the idea of not voting for Hillary Clinton, and every time another controversy like this happens, those voters get less and less available to donald trump. Kevin, sam kept making an interesting point, and i know you were cheering him on, youve got to tell people what youre for. You watched me i watched you. And i would say that candidate, the candidate you worked for, he does struggle talking about positives. He loves talking about negatives. So how do you well, look how do you make this work . A couple things here because i dont know. One, lets look at the primary, okay . He wiped out an amazing array of candidates. And he did it by being assertive and by responding to every charge, okay . So lets just lay that down as a truth. And thats right, and its a truth for him. Its a truth. And its what worked for him and its what he remembers. And, and, this is a different kind of candidate. Hes a change agent. Now, i know youve heard me say this before, and im going to say it again, with your, you know, forbearance, this is, you know, early to midaugust, i am much more interested in early to midoctober when it becomes battleground state polls. So everyone whos dancing on graves and writing obit wawares the elite are vulnerable to being badly embarrassed. I hear the august argument. Its also postconventions. Its also, stals, youre seeing what happened in the last week. August is the new september, because it is postconvention. You have a the concrete is starting to harden around Donald Trumps feet. And people are beginning to look at him and theyre applying the president ial leadership test and hes failing and hes failing pretty consistently. When you only have about 95 days to go, every single day that you lose a news cycle is a day that youre never going to get back but who says hes losing the news cycle . Well, i i think hes redefining the news cycle. And i think you think wait a minute, kevin does bring up a good point. There were a lot of times we thought he was losing the news cycle, right, molly, and it turned out the attacks didnt hurt, day help. One thing he has in his favor is that outrage fatigue factor. I sat in on a focus group of undecided women voters in swing states thats an interesting way to put it. Say it again . Outrage fatigue factor. Its the new clinton fatigue, right . The off. What a lot of these women were saying, the khan controversy was brought up, the Second Amendment controversy was brou brought up, and they sort of were like, he said something offensive, what else is new . But there are people who have already factored that into their decision. They know if they get onboard with trump, theyre voting for someone who says offensive things and thats part of the package. Its, is the person who says offensive things better or worse than this other person they dont trust. Better be fast. So clean break with the past may mean Something Different than it does in the, you know no, i mean, look, you bring up the point and i think weve all discussed it here. You have a candidate who knows how he got success. And maybe he doesnt want to change that. Sticking around. Stick with me here. Up next, the new clinton republicans. This list is actually continuing to grow. Former connecticut congressman chris shays explains his switch, next. In a normal election year, it would be given a each candidate would receive the backing of members of his or her own party, right . But this year weve seen a number of prominent republicans part ways with donald trump and even drop their support of him altogether. A letter signed by 50 National Security republicans this week prompted us to wonder, how many members of president george w. Bushs cabinet have endorsed trump . Well, the last republican cabinet, its in the white house, how many of them are Backing Trump . How many are outwardly supporting Hillary Clinton . And how many are marked eedly silent. One of the biggest name, hank paulson, is backing clinton. Hes joined by gutierrez, norm mineta, who is a democrat in the cabinet, by the way. Some of the most notable officials who have fallen silent, both of former bushs secretaries of states, Condoleezza Rice and colin powell havent said who they would be voting for in november. Rices name was rumored to be considered for trumps vp, but her camp denied it. Powell said just last month, he wasnt prepared to endorse. So by our count, in total, there are about 19 bush cabinet members who are in no mans land right now. Unclear if more names will voice support for one of these candidates or not, or if well hear about a lot of people writing in Alexander Hamilton on november 8th. By the way, basically, the two for trump appear to be rumsfeld and then, i guess, you would count dick cheney. Well be right back with more mtp daily in one minute. Only an authentic booking. Com property would suffice for jordans Bachelor Party. I dont need a sword, im a firemaid. Ding dong im going to give this place a killer review. I dont know, i just always thought maybe my Bachelor Party would be a little less grated. Wench ahhh ahhh hahaha. Oooh Party Time Party boy ok, ok. Mm hm, party time. Hmm, mmm, mmm. It came out to her people are pay for play. And very big stories today. The problem is, it will be big stories for about two minutes, and then theyre going to drop it. If that were me, that would be the biggest story in the history of the various papers. They go quadruple spacing. Welcome back. As donald trump continues to try to make the media the issue, and tries to put out his own fire, the Republican Party again facing a slew of missed opportunities to hammer their opponent, Hillary Clinton. For the biggest headlines on Hillary Clintons troubles in august maroon shes still facing terrible trust numbers in the poll, misrepresenting james comeys assessment of her honesty. A lawsuit from the parents of two americans killed in the benghazi attacks. A rundown of her troubled jobs record as senator, some substantiative hits. None of these things can care to unforced errors that donald trump commits on a neardaily basis. Many of these clinton controversies have been hanging over her head for years, not just days or months. Republicans, though, seem to be having a hard time knocking clinton when notable figures in their own party are wobbling or even actively defecting. Today, clinton launched the together for america, with the goal of outreach to republicans and independents and shes got a few bigname conservatives who say theyre with her, including former secretary, carlos gutierrez. Former hud secretary, carlie hill, connie marila, john negroponte, and now former congressman, chris shays, republican from connecticut. Well, congressman shays says shes going to vote for Hillary Clinton this november and he joins me now. I have to say, congressman shays, welcome to the show. I think the last time that clinton was so happy with you is when you decided not to vote to impeach bill clinton as one of the few republicans who did that. There were four of us. I thought the impeachable offenses werent proven and the proven offense s werent impeachable. And i regret deeply that we were offtrack. We were on a roll getting lots of things done, and then all of a sudden, tom delay and company said, lets impeach the guy and well be in power for the next 25 years. So let me ask you this. Is your vote for Hillary Clinton or against donald trump . First off, donald trump lost me a long time ago. And so now im faced, okay, who do i vote for . And i watched both conventions. I saw a dark convention. I saw a convention where it was almost like they wanted to lynch Hillary Clinton, lock her up. Guilty as charged and then i listened to a Democratic Convention that talked about making government work for people. Our Founding Fathers established the constitution of the United States, because it wasnt working, under the articles of confederation. And what they did is they created a constitution that took Diverse People and had them understand the art of compromise. Hillary clinton will work with republicans to get our government working again. Thats a big promise. What why are you convinced of this . So many of the current republican elected officials, and you know, this is i worked with her. This is a much Different Congress than when you served in it. Right as you know. But when i was chairing the National Security subcommittee, and i remember having a hearing in new york and in walks Hillary Clinton, sitz next to the other house members. This was about the illnesses the you know, these incredible people were dealing with. And she didnt act partisan. She wanted to solve a problem. She couldnt have been more gracious. And the bottom line was, she was a very effective senator. That cant be denied. So she knows world leaders. She knows the senate. She knows the house. She knows the white house. And shes been around the country talking to americans for years. And she knows the challenges our country is faced with. So you know, im not lukewarm about supporting her. I think she will be a very good governor a very good president. Why you know, as you know, this trust issue is the thing that hangs over her head more than anything else. Why do you trust her . You know what, thats hurting her. And it deserves to hurt her. It wouldnt even be a close election. So if i have any say with her, i would like her to do with what we did in my office. We call it the Community Meeting test. If you couldnt justify it in a Community Meeting, you didnt do it. And she needs to, when shes president , have that kind of test and not get into the kind of trouble that she gets into. All right, well, shes going to have one test early on. And i think its the Clinton Foundation. Do you think that that that it is that the Clinton Foundation can exist while shes president of the United States and not have constant conflict of interest potential just hanging over her head at any given moment . Well, ive never talked to anyone about it, but i sure as heck would suggest that they not have it. Youd shut it down . Youd shut down the foundation . I would absolutely shut it down. The bottom line is shes going to be president of the United States, with an opportunity either in four or eight years to get this country moving again. And you dont want to miss an opportunity like that by having other issues get in the way. What would you do one other thing that im curious about. If she does get elected with the help of republicans like yourself, what do you think she owes the country and owes republicans in your cabinet . Does this mean you think she should be making a pledge going, you know im going to have a lot of republican support, so instead of just giving the other party transportation, no offense to that department, but a nonpolitical, a noninfluential, does this mean you would like to see her name a republican to one of the big four, big five treasury . I want her to appoint the best people. And if she can appoint some really good republicans in her administration, she would be wise to do it. All right. Chris shays, former congressman from connecticut, good to see you, sir. Thanks for coming on. Nice to see you too. Praesappreciate. Were following some breaking news right at this hour out of new york city. A man, look at this, is climbing trump tower in manhattan. Hes using suction cups to make his way up the side of the building. Good grief. Police are on the scene, talking to the guy, trying to get him to come down. Rescuers have cut through vent grills, window glass in attempts to grab him. They have also lowered a window washing platform in another attempt to reach him. Officials tell us they believe they know who this man is, but they cannot yet confirm his identity until he comes down. Weve got a producer on the phone, thats on the scene right now, adam reece. Adam, i you know, only in new york and only in this campaign, what more can you tell us . Chuck, good afternoon. It is quite a new york scene. Hundreds of people gathering here on the corners of madison avenue and fifth avenue to watch there guy climb. He has just passed the 16th floor. Hes now approaching the 17th floor, despite efforts from the esu unit. There are about a dozen officers up there. You can see them in this live picture. They opened up two vents. They opened up a glass window to try to bring him in, but he has moved just to the left, towards the south side of the building, and he continues to climb with those suction cups that you talked about. They blew up a rescue inflatable right here 56th street in case he does fall. But he continues to go up, chuck, and any efforts to bring him in by the esu unit, which, by the way, they call the navy s. E. A. L. S of the nypd, they just havent been able to bring him in just yet, chuck. You say nypd is involved. I assume donald trump is not there, but i assume that the secret service must be involved. I saw two to three agents just arrived. They went into the building. The south side of the building is the residence entrance, and that is where donald trump comes and goes from, but as you mentioned, he is not here. If he were to be here, we might have an entirely different situation, chuck. They i know that authorities think they know who it is. Is this a professional activist, a professional sort of building climber to be disruptive, like, without revealing the identity, and i understand that theres some what more do we know about who this person is, or his background. Reporter i dont know who he is. I can tell you, this has been a very slow process for him. Whether or not hes experienced at this type of a climb, we just dont know. But weve been hear for just a little over an hour. Hes made it up just over 16 floors. And well just see how far hes able to go before they decide once and for all to make a more conscience effort to bring him inside before he goes to high. Adam reiss on the floor for us at trump tower. Well keep covering this frankly bizarre situation. Only in new york and only in this campaign. More mtp daily after this. We continue to follow breaking news of a man scaling trump tower in manhattan. He is now approaching the 18th floor. Police are working to get him down. There is an inflatable pad to catch him if he falls, but again, we have no idea why he made this climb, what his motivation is, is he there to hurt himself, hurt others, send a protest, unfurl some flag, eat more chicken, you know, i dont mean to be facetious, but i have to say, im going to bring in the panel here. Mally ball, kevin mckellem and steve mcmahon. Molly, youre like, of course, this is how things go. Is he unfurling something . Is it the eat more chicken sign . I dont mean to be i think thats just the when i first saw this pop up, it seemed like, of course. What i love about this campaign is every time you think it cant become more of a circus, it proves you wrong. So i have to think like next week, theres going to be something involving circus elephants on the loose. So people act out in unusual and unpredictable ways. But this is an acting out of some kind. One of the reasons that yesterday was so serious in what donald trump said, is that he was actually, to some people, it was a joke. To others, it was being misinterpreted. But there were people out there who might have heard it as an incitement to do something horrible, to act out in a way thats dangerous and violent. If this is the worst acting out we get in this campaign, it will be a victory. Youre right, this has been a concern of mine in this whole campaign, there are some people that are so angry about the choices. So many people angry, personally, at the two candidates, youre going to see crazy. Were going to see crazy act itself out, kevin. Im switching back to old school. Im going to the Miriam Webster dictionary. And hyperbole is designed at extravagant exaggeration used as a figure of speech. Now, i think any connection, with all due respect, between someone saying something positive about the second amount, i probably own more guns than everyone in this studio. In fact, im certain of it. This is, you know, he was talking about the fact that theres voting strengths. Kevin, kevin, kevin, look this is bizarre. But he was speaking as if the election already happened. He cant, look, i get that youre trying to reword it, but he was speaking in a the election happened, shes going to do this and theres nothing you can do about it after the election happens. No, no, no. Then he his spoke. But he spoke in the past tense. This is a man who speaks, and at times, with exaggeration, at times, its sarcastic. By the way, as you can see, by the way, fifth avenue, not exactly a side street in manhattan. Obviously, being blocked off. Ive come in and out of that building many times and i did not do it that way. Did you go to the other interest . I did not. There are 62 floors on that flower. We could be watching this all night long. Lets go to the ground. Nbc producer adam reece is tracking from the ground. Adam, i know youre on the phone. What information can you tell us . Were watching. Just so you know, we are actively watching him climb. So tell us what youve learned from authorities and what youre learning on the ground . Reporter were watching here as well, chuck. I am told by a spokesman for the Police Department that the esu officers that were placed on the 16th floor have been in touch with him and have spoken to him, but obviously that had no effect as he continues to climb trump tower. We are told that he posted a video on youtube. We havent seen it here on the ground, but apparently the video does explain why he has embarked on this climb, to the top of trump tower. Esu offers, theyre also called the navy s. E. A. L. S of the nypd, have blown up an air bag, right at the entrance to the residence of trump tower, here on 56th street. At the same time, hundreds of new yorkers have gathered, almost like a seen from the movie superman, looking up into the sky, both on madison avenue and fifth avenue, to see whats going on here in new york city, on this hot, august afternoon. And there he is, connecting to climb, continuing to use the suction cups, as he makes his ways up to the sky. Now, they did say they blew out a window on the 16th floor in hopes of bringing him in. They will have difficulty doing that again, because theyre concerned any falling glass will hit him. So how they approach going about bringing him in at these heights, we just dont know at this point. But theyre still inside, conferring with each other. Theyre moving some of the airconditioning units that they use on the outside of the building over. They raised the scaffolding that they used for window washing back up to the roof. They had brought it down to about his height, but they brought that back up to the roof. And were not sure why. Chuck . You know, adam, you said that he has a youtube. I assume authorities have seen the youtube, already. They know what hes up to . Reporter yeah. In fact, as you had mentioned earlier, we do believe they know who he is. And theyre attempting to talk him down, but they havent been successful just yet. Hes continuing to use ropes and suction cups and he seem s to know what hes doing as hes moved to the south of the building, away from the open windows where they were trying to grab him, so he can continue his climb. So we take it it is a protest. Is it political in nature . Is it Something Else . T is he just looking for attention . Well were following this okay, well call it breaking news, of a man scaling trump tower in manhattan. Hes approaching the 18th floor. Police are working to get him down. They have spoken with him. He has said hes got a Youtube Video up, explaining why hes doing this. Authorities have not shared with the media why theyre doing this. There is an inflatable pad to catch him if he falls. And we will tell you, by the way, you are not seeing a live picture. We have this on a sevensecond delay, for obvious reasons. Again, though, we have no idea why hes making this climb. Were going to take a break. Well be back to see whats going on with all this. Your moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Be the you who shows up in that dress. Who hugs a friend. Well, we have some new photos. Thats right. Thats from inside trump tower. This is the man that is scaling the outside of the building. Again, authorities have spoken to him. He has said there is a youtube explaining why hes doing this. Authorities probably not wanting to give him more publicity have not shared with us much about who he is, what his motivations are. Any of that, but it does seem theres been a lot of weird things with this campaign. This is going to rank up there on the absurdity scale. You know, for somebody deciding to do this. Panels still with me. Molly ball, kevin kellum, steve mcmahon. Can we talk about taxes . Well, you know, maybe hes maybe thats what hes protesting. Maybe the rent is too damned high. For the tower, is too damned high. One thing i think we can safely say is unprecedented is a president ial nominee having his skyscraper climbed by a person. And by the way, as much as were being this all seems silly and all of this, this is dangerous. This is dangerous to the man running for president. This is dangerous in like, this campaign has gotten out of whack. It does feel as if people are that i cant tell you how many people ive come into contact, in both campaigns, and even some in the press, feel less secure than ever, because there is this sense of chaos out in the electorate, that people will do crazy things like this guy. Yes. Less secure, more angry, more frustrated. And more willing to act out in ways that, you know, i said earlier, unusual and uncommon. Fortunately, for this person, the only person in danger here appears to be the gentleman whos climbing the trump tower. And and hope that thats the limit of this kind of acting out. And look, this is a man whos run this is a the person whos name is on this tower is a person running for president. It is odd, it fits the definition of any news. But ill be frank about this, us giving him this coverage only could encourage the next guy to think, oh, so scaling a building will get me to roadblock television. It is odd. But its happened before in different ways. I do think that all of the things that my colleague here has described are the reasons why donald trump is actually doing well. So, hes a world where things that are unusual are helpful, where people being disappointed and aggrieved are something he wants to speak to. I dont want to make too much of it, because this could be a oneoff. Thats the other thing. I get again, i do feel like this is completely absurd, and this is like, i cant believe were on one hand. On the other hand, this could be very dangerous. And we shouldnt want to make light of that either. Thats right. And yeah, there does seem to be a level but i think maybe thats the doubleedged sword of this whole campaign, if we want to turn it into a metaphor, is that it does alternate seem absurd and threatening. And sometimes, if you dont take it seriously, it can all seem like a big joke. And on the other hand, when you think about the consequences of a lot of this stuff, its not so funny anymore. And like, thats youre right. That is this campaign in a nutshell. Its absurd, you want to laugh sometimes, but you also want to cry. Theres also, i mean, someone not here, but tried to connect the argument about gun control with acts of this nature and, you know, this is a little bit out there, but on may 24 of 2008, the new york times, a direct quote, hillary defended staying in the democratic primary, because, quote, we all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in june and if people rightfully condemned her for saying that. And she took it back. And she took it back. Theres a disconnect there but she didnt accuse people of taking her words the wrong way. She took it back. Why didnt trump take that back . I understand that. Why didnt he admit that that take what back . You know, he poorly worded something. It was poorly worded and he doesnt want people to know that thats what he meant. Hes done it before and hell do it again. He always has other people do it for him. He did it in a tweet the other day. What, on the iran footage . I completely, completely agree with his defense of the Second Amendment, im a, i think, reasonable person. I understand that in a campaign reference, but he didnt speak it to that way. But, look this is another topic. Well, it is, but, steve, i think it does get to, you know and i think this is where the public at one point will throw up their hands. There is a middle of the electorate that is tired of the side show. Its exhausted. What did we just call it . Off. Outrage fatigue. But theres also, i think were in this, were all its the absurdity of this campaign. There is this is a, right now, front a group of Trump Supporters that cant stand Hillary Clinton and the choice they have there. Theres a group of Hillary Clinton supporters that cant stand donald trump. If there were a purple party, dare i say. I know, you of the purple strategies, brother. Seriously, theres a large group of people out there who are rejecting both status quos. Let me bring on, weve been sort of talking about the absurdity of what this means for the campaign, but i want to bring in a former atf special agent in charge, somebody whos had to deal with his share of crazies. Jim cavanaugh, youre an nbc news analyst. And i assume youve, in your career, have seen plenty of crazy. Whats your assessment here . I think probably, a political stunt in the location of trump tower. This guy will get to the location he wants, maybe the penthouse or trumps residence up there and he probably has a message. In that backpack, he may have a banner he wants to unfurl, he may have something to say. And you know, the police, nypd negotiators and the Police Emergency service unit, theyve got a lot of gal, because its too risky to, you know, try to take him down. Let him put his message out, and then get him to surrender. Jim, would you at all try to apprehend him from inside the building . Or is that simply too dangerous . I think its too dangerous. What you want to do is move people away from inside away if he had a gun in that backpack or something, or an explosive or Something Like that, you want to move people away from the inside. If you have control of the inside, move those people away, get everybody out, so just have Police Officers up there, negotiators, Emergency Service personnel. They have mountain climbing emergency gear. And just probably wait to see what his message is. If it becomes something violent, theres nobody there to hurt but himself, and the police can take care of themselves. If its just a message, hell surrender or parachute down. It will be some crazy stunt or some let me ask you this, jim, you just brought up something that frankly could seem quite scary to many viewers. Which is, all right, what if there is Something Else in that backpack . And how do you confirm that . And its like, you know, they must feel comforted in some form that he is only a danger to himself . When you look at guys like this, usually, they spend all their energy in their suction cups and spiderman gear. And hes probably going to, you know, unfurl some sign that says trumps a chump, and thats the end of the stunt. But as a police officer, as a federal agent, one thing youre always going to have in your mind, is there a gun in there . Explosives in there . Something in there that could harm someone . So thats why weve got to clear people out up there. Let him maneuver on up. Jim, are you watching a tv right now. Are you watching a tv right now . Im watching. Okay, do you see him . We got it looks like the scaffolding for window washers. It looks like theyre trying theyre going to try again here to make outside contact with him. What would be your do you think theyre trying to have a conversation with him, or do you think this is an attempt to apprehend . I think its a negotiation. Likely theres going to be a negotiator in there from the Emergency Service unit, the nypd, and theyre going to try to talk to him and say, look, what do you want . What are you doing . Where are you going . Whats going on . Talk to me. And see if they can communicate with him. Because, you know, its just too much risk to start trying to jump out of there, out of the window washer box. Theyre not really trying to do that. What they want to do is communicate with him. And hes going to tell them something, chuck. Hes going to say, look, i want to go up to the top and im going to have a message for trump or whatever. But you have to make sure that all trumps people or all the personnel on any of these floors are not there. Because if he were to have a gun or explosives or something, who would be dangerous. He could break a window, he could get inside. Even if he had a handgun. But i would think that their most likely assessment is what youre talking about. Its a crazy Political Year and its probably a crazy political stunt. All right, jim cavanaugh, nbc news analyst, former atf special agent in charge, appreciate your perspective.
