The president ial race took a hard turn following terror attacks and they are at the epicenter of the political debate for a return of profiling treating terror suspects as enemy combatants and comparing refugees to you guessed it, skittles. Trump is about to take the stage in North Carolina. We will keep a close eye on that event. For better or worse, he is at the center of this conversation right now. Case and point, earlier today he delivered his last address in new york. In the global spotlight, his address was a take down of trumpism. Alternative visions of the world have pressed forward. Aggressive nationalism. A crude populism who seeks to restore what they saw was a simpler age free of outside contamination. I do believe that these visions fail to recognize at a basic level our common humanity. A nation ringed by walls would only imprison itself. They are facing controversy after donald trump jr. Admitted risks of admitting refugees to skittles that could kill you. Kelly odonnell spoke to mike pence about the comments. I understand in a political season people seize on the smallest of things. Did it strike you as being insensitive when there are men and children and women who have suffered who are just looking for a way out. What is insensitive is to turn a blind eye to policies that are very likely compromising the safety and security of the american people. Trump himself amps up his rhetoric on the issue of National Security, slams his opponent at a rally as providing comfort to our enemies. She calls the patriotic americans who support our campaign, many of them cops and soldiers, deplorable and irredeemable. Has she ever talked that way about radical islam . After grabbing the momentum, the Trump Campaign ran into trouble. There is the comments from trump about firing up the gas chambers and compared refugees to skittles as we discussed. A reversal on birtherism that continues to dog the campaign. New poll numbers show clinton gaining ground. They have clinton up points and to top it off, a bombshell report in the post that trump used more than a quarter Million Dollars from his charity to settle legal problems with his business. Kelly odonnell joins me after the exclusive interview with mike pence. Fantastic job. So many headlines to get to. I want to start with one of them. We talk about the fact that donald trump seemed to suggest that the terror suspects should be an enemy combatant and treated that way. You asked mike pence about that. What was your answer and take away . Of course the suspect is afghanborn and i asked if the privileges of american citizenship should be full low a part of his prosecution and it was interesting that governor pence responded acknowledging that he is a naturalized citizen, therefore has access to the american courts. He did not go as far as donald trump has and expressed a lot of dismay about the fact that rahami had been identified to Law Enforcement a couple of years ago and his father expressed concerns and pence was really at a loss to explain how that happened and suggested that Law Enforcement had been hamp hampered by Political Correctness and talking about the issue of the status of rahami as he is prosecuted. He is a naturalized american citizen and has access to the courts. However it is prosecuted, we really need to think long and hard about the challenges that our Law Enforcement community face and we have to move past the era of Political Correctness. And we have a bit of an announcement happening at the location that hosted us today. Disregard that. You see the difference there between pence and trump. Trump changing ahead to suggest that rahami should be treated differently than his american status should allow and pence being more retrospect in terms of how things should go forward. Not closing the door, but not embracing it as fully. We will ask a supporter and surrogates about that in a moment. I want to ask you about the subject of birtherism. This is something that remains in the headlines. The Clinton Campaign continues to hit donald trump for how he handled the entire topic. I want to play your exchange with mike pence and get your reaction on the other side. Last week he put an end to that issue. Did he really . Sure he did. He allowed so Many Americans to think the president was not born in the United States. He didnt really correct that until he had to because the debate is next week. But kelly, you know over the course of this campaign over the last year and a half, donald trump has been focused America Great again. Kelly, obviously a lot of controversy around that issue. As you pointed out, they were trying to put it to rest before the debate. What is the strategy heading into the debate to make it go away or do they have one . I think what you find is they are trying to close a door and insisting everyone else close it too. When questions come up, they refuse to engage. Mike pence said its over and as you saw, i pressed him on whether it would be appropriate to if not apologize to the president who is not seeking such an apology, apologize to the supporters and those who believed trump because he was a lead or this birther issue and it was wrong from the beginning and he would not go there. He said its over and done with and they are looking towards the future. They dont want it to get new oxygen and that wont stop others who still think it hasnt been fully litigated and trump has not said all that needs to be said. I asked governor pence who has a different personal style than trump and the trump we have come to see. I said you are a polite guy. Wouldnt you have apologized . He didnt pick up on that. While he can be a vigorous campaigner, he tends to be a softer tone not looking for a controversial fight, but on this issue he is trying to say just like trump, it is over, finished in the words of trump and he wouldnt go there. I want to talk about the broader picture that the campaign finds itself in right now. Donald trump had momentum and what we have seen in the past several days is he lost a little bit that was and he had his son with the comment about gas chambers and the Birther Press Conference and now the skittles tweet and the post Charity Story questioning Donald Trumps handling of the charity. Do you get the sense that the campaign veered off course . Not at all. Donald trump has been consistent. If you Pay Attention to what he is talking about and not what the media is talking about. We are focused and disciplined and charging ahead and talking about the issues that most americans are focused on and not what most of the media is focused on. We want to know who built it up and make our country safer, particularly a lot of what happened over the weekend. Donald trump is the number one person talking about that and who most Americans Trust on the economy and National Security and thats why we have seen a rise in moment um and we will continue to see that and think that america will get a great chance to see the contrast of that and where donald trump is on those big issues versus Hillary Clinton. If you look at the polls, he has lost ground according survey monkey with likely voters and shows clinton with apoint national lead. Does that concern you as a top adviser when you see the comments that take the conversation off course like the skittles issue. Does that not concern thaw the campaign is getting back into its old ways again . Not at all because again i dont think the campaign is getting back into their old ways, but the media is looking for ways to provide distractions. There are quite a few polls ha show that donald trump is in a dead heat with clinton, particularly the most key Battle Ground states and a major shift of almost 15 points among africanamericans that are getting behind donald trump. That is a big deal that no one is talking about. This race is tied. Particularly in the states that matter because we are focused on the issues that Americans Care about and he is resonating with a lot more people than Hillary Clinton. If we talk about people getting off track, its Hillary Clinton. The biggest and most disqualifying moment of her campaign is when she called Trump Supporters deplorable and showed the level of contempt she has for americans across this country who are supporting donald trump. She did walk the comments back. I want to get your reaction. Of course she did. Let me get your reaction to what we heard from Kelly Odonnell and the split between donald trump who is indicating that the new york terror suspect should not get hospital treatment and should be treated as an enemy combatant and pence saying this is not the case. There is a divide between donald trump and the vp pick. They are looking for every option to prosecute the person under the full extent of the law. What we have to do is stop focusing on Political Correctness. They seemed to be at odds with their answers. Their answers did not lineup. I tend to disagree because i think they are looking for how do we stop this and make america safe again . Donald trump and mike pence are different personalities and approach things differently and use different language to explain it. The main priority here is what can we do to keep america safe and what can we do to prosecute this person to the full extent of the law and get back to where we have the allies and enemy spirits. Under obama and clinton, we have lost that high ground and we are in a much more dangerous world. We have to get back to a place where we have that stability. I know that donald trump called for this stricter vetting. When you look 59 the terror suspect though, he was a legal citizen. He had been here since he was years old and his family had a Small Business here. Isnt donald trump missing the point in terms of how to prevent this . It seems like homegrown extremism. His own father and family reported him that they thought he might be a terrorist. That was two years ago. Thats something we should have aggressively been following up. We are allowing Political Correctness to outweigh common sense. His father said that was made in the heat of the moment and donald trump called for extreme vetting and limit the number of refugees that would be allowed in. Isnt that missing the point of what actually caused this terror attack which was a case of homegrown extremism. I dont think it is missing the point that we have to make america safe again and focus on vetting at home and need to look and know who is coming in and why they are coming here. This is a great example of someone who uses common sense and not focusing so much on Political Correctness. They have a wall and they vet and they have a pretty good track record on keeping these things from happening on their soil. America has not done as good of a job and that is in large part to the Obama Clinton open door policy and the failed Foreign Policy that they implemented in the last eight years. There is stiff vetting and a twoyear vetting process right now. I want to turn to the Washington Post report and give you a chance to respond to that and analyze the tax filings of Trump Charity and found that he used the money to prop up private interest including he paid 100,000 to settle a legal dispute between the Palm Beach Golf Club and the city of florida and found that the charity paid 158,000 to settle a dispute between the new York Golf Club and the private plaintiff. That would appear to violate tax laws with self dealings. We have yet to hear the response to this. What is your reaction and how problematic is this . I dont think its problematic that a Major Charity that gave millions to veterans organizations and done good all over this country and continues to do that versus what you have with Hillary Clinton who has if this money was used to settle legal disputes, that would be a violation of the laws that govern charities. Would it not . Im not a tax attorney so im not going to definitely into pretending to be one, not even on tv. In contrast, you have Hillary Clinton who created a slush fund through the Clinton Foundation and a pay to play scandal in the state department. Thats a very big difference than i charity that has given money and donald trump who has given over 100 million to different charities. There is no proof that it is a slush fund. You guys have been attacking the Clinton Foundation, but my question is dont the headlines under cut trumps moral high ground here in terms of his ability to attacking Clinton Foundation . Not at all when you have a Government Official that is taking part in a pay to play scandal and to me, those things are not even close to comparable. Again, you have Hillary Clinton who is secretary of state and admitting they gave access to donors to the state department for meetings. That is a major problem. That is very different than a charity giving money to veterans than a pla pay to play. This put the security at risk. Those are not in the same ballpark. To be fair, there is no security that National Security was put at risk. Do you know if the new York Attorney general contacted donald trump the campaign and the Trump Foundation about these allegations . I dont. I have not heard that he has. Do you know why they havent responded . Why wont the Trump Campaign put this story to rest . You can certainly count on the Trump Campaign responding. We havent hidden from anything yet unlike Hillary Clinton who refused for almost an entire year to take questions from the press. That is not the case on our side. You can expect us to respond. I think you see in his leadership, aeversal that the America First rhetoric that rings with overtones that are dark for many people and with his base and the majority of americans is tightening. Given the fact that some people, a lot of people get concerned and scared all over again when you have terror attacks like the one over the weekend. Does trumps message resonate and does Hillary Clinton have to hit back or no . There is a way in which trumps message does resonate. I thought it was amusing when president obama mentioned walls. I wonder who he was talking about. He mentioned berlin. Look at the issues that Angela Merkel is having in her country after being accepting of refugees. One of the lessons of this refugee crisis and one of the lessons of the terrorism that we are all enduring is that you have to be attentive to folks at home and to the anxieties that this kind of thing creates. She is going to need to be responsive to that. It was striking how different the response were. And continued to be in the wake of this weekends bombings. You had two speeches that were about donald trump. He made several references to walls and talks about how globalized trade makes us better and a rebuttal of globalization and hillary is on every issue on the obama side of a globalized world and better for the economy and supports bringing in more refugees as well. This is a silly campaign in a lot of ways, but there is a difference in a globalized world. Absolutely. And of course leading up to the first debate, it puts a stark contrast on the issue of Foreign Policy. You do see donald trump and he had a lot of momentum and there have been misstepped. I have a different take. This morning survey monkey has clinton up and i had shawn trendy who is a great bias and people are giving answers they believe people want to hear and for which they will not be judged. There is no blinking way to know where this race is. I dont believe that anybody has a clue and momentum shifts. The debate on monday night is a big deal and maybe the biggest deal of this election. We are in a state of suspended animation right now. Just waiting for the debate. While we are in that state of suspended animation, i wasnt sure you were allowed to say blinking. Blinking is okay. We are seeing some events creep in and shape the debate. For example the terrific reporting by my colleague about the Trump Foundation which you asked Sarah Huckabee sanders about. As well as the implications of the terrorists. Its a very comforting thing when donald trump said i am going to be tough and we will hit them hard. I think other voters look at that and say what does that mean . We have been hitting them and might be a little bit more tuned to lets call it the more nuanced approach to secretary clinton. There is no doubt there will be more pressure for him to get specific about his policies. I want to ask you about the skittles controversy. Something we may or may not hear in the first debate. Its not the candidate himself, but its again raises questions about is there a tone deafness we are seeing coming from the Trump Campaign . You saw in polls and i would argue that hillary had the pneumonia and the deplorables that caused her poll numbers to dip. Whoever the voters do not like or whoever the attention is on tends to look worse in the polls. Now i think trumps message could work, but the other scandals with the charity and the skittles and the negative attention on him is not helpful. If you are president. Will you control your twitter. Thats where we are headed. I think donald trump jr. Is not donald trump, but trump might have a good message about refugees and it is distracting with the unforced errors. I would rather rather than focusing on donald trump jr. s tweets, we should focus on Donald Trumps words. I was offended when he talked about the suspect and he is going to get the best lawyer. Isnt that what we want in america and what john adams did before the revolution . We give people lawyers and we want adversary system to work. I was talking to your colleague and try not to be overwhelmed and a major story is the tulsa shooting. This is deeply disconcerting. Skittles is absurd to me. I take your point, but is it not emblematic that it is such a serious crisis we are facing as a country and as a community and does it not make it seem as though i read in the syrian crisis. You could buy that to what you are saying. This is deeply heart breaking and a genocide into 160 children. Its a very terrible situation to somehow take a metaphor as opposed to an adjective. Basket of deplorables. And make it a needle in a haystack situation. I just used a metaphor and skittles used a metaphor. I think its silly and dimini diminishes the importance of this. Can we agree that skittles in the context of dead children is offensive . Then we could maybe agree that it was offensive and agree that its not Donald Trumps fault and there are bigger things to write about and then i will go to maybe there is a failure of empathy in the trump family at large. The use of metaphor is such a part of our language and the difficulty of discernment of threat. Not for the refugees. Where as clinton used deplorables as an adjective about his voters. That is a big business. We might have a difference of person, but the refugee crisis is horrific. That are i think everyone agrees. We have a lot more to discuss. The fbi did question the father who said according to officials that he didnt mean it and it was the heat of the argument and he had no reason to think his son was a terrorist, but it did open the investigation of sorts. It looked at federal databases and interviewed family members and interviewed neighbors. He concluded that there was no terror connection and went back and interviewed the father again who according to officials said again, i didnt mean it. I have no reason to think my son was a terrorist and the case was closed. Let me followup with you. We spoke with the father and apparently he said that the fbi didnt do its job. Did the fbi follow protocol . The Officials Say the father himself told the fbi, the quick answer is yes, the fbi followed rules for doing these things and didnt find anything. The father according to officials said i didnt think my son was a terrorist. I didnt mean it. It was in the heat of the argument. That is different from what he is saying now that they didnt do their job. He said there was nothing to see here. You have been reporting on this note that police found. What is the latest . If donald trump hits a home run, it could be tough for secretary clinton to come back. It will be the most watched debate ever. I have been on just the republican side, they are fun to do and more fun to be done if you are in lester holts position, but it will be pivotal to the race. Governor romney won the first debate handly. It doesnt matter. It will matter in the next two. He won two races and its big, but only if there is not another debate. Whats your assessment and what are you expecting . I have been talking to sources and she is preparing to take on two different Donald Trumps. One, the donald trump who will be aggressive and the teleprompter donald trump. My guess is we will see both of those. She needs to be prepared to take on both. The first trump that we will see is teleprompter trump and he will try to come off as statesmanlike. She will be doting him and perhaps the moderator. He will be doing something that he will be doting and he told us how he responds. He is a counter puncher and start to counter attack. Hillary clinton will seize any opportunity that he gives her and perhaps more to say there you go again. Racist and whatever. Insulting people. I think it really could be worth the number of people that are tuning in to it. Out that night. Perry, what are you going to be watching for. Theres about 15 of the electorate thats either gary johnson, jill stein, or undecided. I would be interested to see how they try to appeal to those people who probably dont want to hear them slam each other and attack each other and call each other racist. Hillarys numbers with millennials, not that great. So im curious how they try to appeal to those people, johnson is not likely to be president , be 7 of the vote thats out there to grab if youre smart about it. I was just beginning to say, the lemillennials. Thats really who shes got to win over in order to bring out the Obama Coalition in full force. So far, shes been trying to do shes reversed this week. Shes moved towards, heres what im going to do im sure the debate will have a lot of attacking trump, still. But theres a way to gain vote here, not from the other guy, but from the undecided box. Perry makes a really good point, it and really goes to the multiple tasks that women are supposed to be good multitaskers. This is a multitasking the debate for her. She has to both put forward a positive vision, make yourself more attractive to the millennials, and counterpunch, and if necessary, fact check trump. She has a tremendous advantage, as well. Shes been in a dozen oneonone debates, whereas donald trump has not done a single oneonone debate. A lot of folks have brought up that very to point. In the primaries, you were a part of this process, he didnt have to talk as much. And he had foils to play off of. He could pick a target, and there was a time constraint. How does he prepare for that . Can he . Ive read accounts of the preparation, which mystify me, as someone who studied president ial debates. Im sure it mystifies perry and ruth. He does not appear to be prepared. In the sense that hes not doing mock debates yet . Correct. It will be interesting to see if he does one ahead of mondays debate. I want to ask you about some breaking news that were getting. Andrea mitchell reporting this report that Kathleen Kennedy townsend saying that former president george h. W. Bush told her and others in kennebunkport that he plans to vote for Hillary Clinton. Let me start with you, perry, on this point. There have been a lot of rumblings about this. A lot of buzz about this. Its not a surprise, but whats the significance, do you think . I was going to say to you that this is big news that a former president of one party is going to vote for the other partys nominee. At the same time, weve said so many, the colin powells, the brent scowcrofts, we had so many people of the traditional republican establishment, neither bush wins the convention. So i dont think it has a big impact, to be honest with you. I feel like donald Trump Supporters are not looking for bushs permission to vote for who theyre going to vote for. Could it help her expand her support . Win over some of those independents. Im not sure it has a big electoral impact, but its pretty seismic within the party. One thing we need to remember, and george w. Bush made clear or jeb bush, im sorry, made clear he couldnt support trump. And so the thing that we have to remember about the bushes is family loyalty is everything to them. If there was ever going to be a republican nominee that george h. W. Bush wasnt beginning to support, it was going to be donald trump. Not just because of what donald trump represents, but because of what donald trump has said about his son. Hugh, give us the broader view from the perspective of a republican. Can you have imagined that former president george h. W. Bush would not be supporting the partys im not going to credit the report to this extent. I think miss townsend ought to retire from the board. They are mad as hell, im told, that she did this. That having been said, is anyone surprised that the bushes are upset with mr. Trump . Mitt romney is on the record of not voting for him. Bob dole on his side. Bob schultz on the record. The republican elites are quite fractured. I dont think it matters, at this election. Let me shift gears here. I want to bring up a story you raised, hugh. This shooting in tulsa, where you have an africanamerican man, another africanamerican man being shot by police officers. Its caught on camera. We do not know how the case is going to turn out. Hillary clintons responded, though. Responded quite forcefully and said we need to address this crisis. This problem. Hugh, does donald trump need to respond . Yes, i think this is a an overarching narrative. I traveled the country with sheriff david clark, with the super pac cosponsor with my Radio Network next week. And sheriff clarke of milwaukee said, please, people, do what the police ask you to do. Ive watched it a half dozen times, its just terrible. Its tough. Perry, what are the ripple effects, do you think . Im happy to hear the candidates talk about this, but this is a deeper issue than national politics. This is about local police, this is about race, this is about, it appears that officers feel like young black men are a threat to them at all times. And in some places, cases, this is a much deeper than politics and needs to i dont know what the solution is, but i cant watch anymore of these videos. Its really distressing to see. Minority leader harry reid took to the senate floor to call out donald trump as a quote, swindler, and slam the republican nominee for not releasing his tax returns. He was born with an inheritance, but lost his daddys wealth. That is why donald trump wont release his tax returns. Thats certainly one of the reasons, of course. Hes not worth nearly as much as he claims to be. So heres the thing. Reid has gone down this road before. In 2012, he stood on the senate floor and accused then republican president ial nominee mitt romney of not having paid taxes for the past decade. And it turned out not to be true. He got a pantsonfire rating from politifact. Lets be clear, theres absolutely bipartisan agreement that trump should release his tax returns. And frankly, something for the Trump Campaign to note, making his tax return public is how mitt romney proved reid wrong back in 2012. But maybe harry reid, who never apologized to romney for being wrong would have better standing if a similar argument from the same location hadnt been proven wrong once before.
