College votes and donald trump at 213, meaning both candidates are several states away from getting to the projection of 270 needed to win. Let me repeat, nbc news has not projected any candidate yet taking 270 and for broader context, no News Organization has projected a candidate taking 270, which provides the factual baseline for what happened early this morning at the white house. The sitting president falsely claimed he won, which he has not, and then demanded that vote counting stop. Now this is not normal. Theres no precedent in American History for a sitting president doing this, nonpartisan Election Officials and legal experts Fact Checking the president today while also urging the nation to respect the rule of law as the process plays out. Let me tell you today, that is a a problem for President Trump regardless of the outcome of this race whether he wins or loses and regardless of how people view him. We will keep bringing you the facts as they unfold, nbc news tracking several battleground states either too close to call or too early to call, and those are the states that can determine the winner. There is a strain on our democracy right now, but there are also plenty of positive actions as well. Officials around the nation in states run by both parties dutifully continuing their work sharing information as they get it, just as so many citizens dutifully voted and peacefully assembled yesterday, and so many poll workers who got through another election. Now to whats next, we expect updates from two key states that trump carried and where biden currently leads, nbc not projecting any winner yet. Thats wisconsin and michigan, Election Officials in wisconsin just spoke to msnbc within the last hour, and they note two small towns have yet to report. Meanwhile, the top official in michigan, the secretary of state announcing they expect more results to come in from detroit and flint very soon. Were tracking all of it today. The results and the laws on the ground will control whether theres even a path for what the president also pledged early this morning, that he wants this court back. Now, we do know lawyers on all sides are prepping for protract protracted battles, potentially in more than one state. What are the paths to victory . Biden has a stronger route because hes up in states that would provide the 270 if he wins them, wisconsin, michigan, arizona, nevada, those states would get him to 270 even if he loses others like pennsylvania, North Carolina, and fwa. Georgia. Let me repeat the factual context as we kick off an hour of special coverage. I say this not because it makes any candidate look good or bad, these biden leads are razor thin. Plenty of people were also hoping this would be decided last night and that these days ahead would not be so messy, but after this year, after this election, there are many values that are far more important than convenience or, yes, our collective exhaustion. This is an election were resolving in these days ahead. This is a democracy were trying to maintain, and that means following the law and the votes regardless of what any politician says. What comes next is too important for politicians. Its about us. And were going to get right into it. My msnbc colleague ali velshi at the big board, we also have Dave Wasserman, also an nbc analyst and with us two strategists who know this terrain better than most, Cornell Belcher who worked for the obama campaigns and Michael Steele whos advised jeb bush and john boehner. Hello, everyone. Ali velshi at the board, why dont you kick us off . You were talking about paths to victory. With the states that are not called, nevada, arizona, alaska, wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania, North Carolina, and georgia, there are 37 ways, 37 combinations that joe biden can get to 270. There are 24 combinations by which donald trump can get to 270, and there are 11 scenarios that result in a tie. So right now were at 227, and were at 213. Okay, i want to talk to you about wisconsin. You just mentioned that. We are not getting a call in wisconsin just yet, but weve got 99 in, and weve heard from, as you said, the wisconsin officials to say theres still about 600 votes out there, somewhere between 3 and 600 votes out there, but because its so close, were not making a call yet. This is now separated by less than 1 , and i think its interesting to sort of understand what happens in wisconsin. If it is within 1 , theres not an automatic recount, but when the margin is within 1 of the total vote, any party can request a recount. As you said, the Trump Campaign has already said theyre going to, but its not actually official because you have to wait for three Business Days after the vote is canvassed. Thats a week from probably today. Then the clock starts. Theyve got three Business Days to file for it. Obviously the Trump Campaign will file for it, and it will take 13 days or up to 13 days to recanvas all that vote. So thats where the Trump Campaign is, where it stands in wisconsin. Now, were not assigning wisconsin yet, but if you lets look at where weve got hey, ali . Yeah, sorry. Lets dig into your point there and then youll walk us through the rest. Something thats new in the last 15 minutes is the Trump Campaign saying, as you just explained, theyll go through with this wisconsin recount. Walk us through the time line you just said to be clear for viewers means if this entire thing is hanging on perhaps only wisconsin. I dont even know if you can go back and bring us back to the time line. That means as far as the Trump Campaign is concerned legally, they would be taking this out for that many days up to those so walk us through that. Theyre saying even if its a wide enough margin where recounts are unlikely to change the result, we would be in that recount land. Thats correct. It would be the 14th or Something Like that before the recount, thats the deadline. Three Business Days after a week from today. A week from today gets us to next wednesday, thursday, friday, then the following monday they have to file by. At some point once theyve filed and by the way, paid for it if its above a quarter of a percent of a difference, then they have the state has up to 13 days. That doesnt mean that they have to take 13 days, but they could take up to 13 days, so we could now if you add 14 to 13, youre at the 27th of november potentially before you get to a result in wisconsin. Now, that may matter less, right . Once we get arizona in, once we get nevada in, we are expecting to get georgia in, we still have a lot of votes out there. Michigan says that by the end of today we should have complete results, and of course pennsylvania is the big one because we still have well in excess of a million votes outstanding. Look at a place like philadelphia county, thats montgomery county, thats where i live, which is why i picked it. Philadelphia county is only 62 in. This breaks 77 to 21 in philadelphia county, thats not those are not believable numbers if you look back in prior campaigns. This number should have a 9 in front of it. So there are hundreds of there are actually over a million votes to come in from pennsylvania, most of which are expected to break for joe biden. If you look at pennsylvania, 80 in, donald trump has a lead of 466,000. Thats not small, but the point is thats going to be broken into a lot by joe biden. So the wisconsin thing is going to be interesting and could take a while, but it could be resolved by a couple of issues. As i showed you, there are many more paths to victory for joe biden than there are for donald trump. There are 37 paths right now, if you add wisconsin to that, there become 20 paths to victory for joe biden, 11 for donald trump. So its still an easier morning to be joe biden than to be donald trump right now. And not an easy morning to be steve kornacki, ali, so im glad that we have you. We have removed him forcibly from the building. Hes in a room with pillows, blankets and warm milk, but somebody on twitter told me hes lactose intolerant so i may have wrecked things. I love it. Ali velshi, youll be busy here doing your best kornacki. We have Dave Wasserman along with Cornell Belcher and Michael Steele, for folks who are following all of this and wondering who subpoeis on the p 270 based on what we know without making projections, your answer is what . Joe biden has the more realistic path to 270 from here. Look, typically typically leads of the size that joe biden has in wisconsin right now survive recounts. Thats also likely to be true in michigan. In the completed counties weve seen in pennsylvania, biden is running ahead of Hillary Clintons numbers in important places like scranton, even in kind of the northern rural tier of pennsylvania, and we expect him to overperform in the suburbs versus clinton in 2016 because thats the pattern that weve seen underway in other states. Georgia is going to be extremely close. Look, theres no question that democrats suffered a catastrophic loss of support among hispanic voters last night, which cost them texas and florida, but there was good news for biden in these suburbs, and that could provide him with a path to 270 and potentially more. And so dave this goes to how we cover elections and this one is more different as i think many people have heard, but if you knew everything you know right now at 8 00 p. M. Eastern last night and that led the coverage, would people have gone to bed feeling differently . Because its arbitrary when different states put in these numbers. Weve tried to express that and patience to folks or is that too far to say . Yeah, you know, ari, weve been spending weve been trying to spend the past month preparing people for the idea of a red or blue mirage on Election Night, and yet, you know, unless youve looked at vote counts over the course of years like the nerds have, then you probably dont you probably arent able to quickly make sense of everything thats happening last night, given the unprecedented nature of the partisan polarization of mail ballots versus the election day vote, its hard for people to wrap their heads around the fact that pennsylvania probably still looks better for biden right now than trump given the tally in the state, but that is the case. Right. Like wise or in the opposite direction in the sun belt we saw large biden leads to start out that were erased by the election day vote. This is just how the cookie crumbles in 2020. Yeah, stay with me. Im bringing in cornell, michael i introduced. A question briefly to you, dave, and then kick around the horn is now with what you know at this hour where would you put bidens result as compared to hillary 16 and obama 12, and what does that mean for people who just bottom line are trying to understand how good or bad of a night is this even though were not yet at 270 . Obama in 12 won the popular vote by i want to say 3. 8 . Its possible by the time all the votes are counted in new york, california, and everywhere else, joe biden will have a lead that matches or exceeds that lead in the popular vote. Well see. Theres still a long way to go. But its let me take that right to cornell. Yeah. Sure. That same question to cornell. Yeah, no, i think when all the votes are counted, we still got a will tlot of counting to were pointing out here. Look, hillary had, what, a twopoint margin, i think when all the votes are counted hes probably going to have a fourpoint margin over trump when all these votes are counted in the battleground states. But no surprise here that, look, the battleground states are a lot tighter than what the nation overall is. And cornell, votes that are counted later, do they count less . Yes, particularly if theyre votes by black people. Michael. Look, i mean, the popular vote is like attendance at a baseball game back when people could go to baseball games. Its a statistic, its important. It doesnt tell you who wins or loses. Right now while losing the popular vote probably by a substantial margin, the president remains competitive at least theoretically, at least with some paths to victory in these crucial electoral battlegrounds. So give us those paths, sir. Hes got to win pennsylvania, i think, and thats wasserman knows the numbers better than i do. But i have trouble imagining a scenario where he puts together a majority without pennsylvania. I think the problem, the perception problem youre talking about earlier, you know, because his supporters are looking at television, because hes looking at television and seeing an apparent substantial lead in pennsylvania right now, no matter how much we tell them that if you extrapolate what remains, you know, their looking at a big win for their guy in a state that could help put them over the top. Michael you know this stuff, you know how the next 20 has historically gone. Again, were not projecting. Do you see donald trump likely ultimately winning or losing pennsylvania . And we will run the tape again later, so tell us what you really think . I think the president will ultimately lose pennsylvania. I think the president will ultimately lose the election, but i think that as long as theres a path, look, hes very popular among republican voters. He just had a big night, a better than expected night. Republicans did better than expected. They are going to give him as much space as they can to run down those leads and try and lock it down. And so very interesting for you, again, as an adviser to so many prominent respirators, corne republicans, cornell, a lot of people went to bed last night and woke up this morning with feelings, and i think although hes on the other side of the aisle, i think Michael Steele put it quite fairly. You maight agree with what he said, people on the maga side are looking up and they feel like seems like maybe trump was doing well, and the president just told them a lot of stuff, some of it false that im not repeating, and a lot of democrats went to bed with similar feelings of anxiety. Final question to you on that, cornell. Well, look, i think we in the media and, look, for weeks weve been trying to tell people were in the going to know who the president is on Election Night, but i think we and in media weve got to continue to do a good job of explaining that narrative, especially to people who only Pay Attention to politics on Election Night. Ill also say this, weve also got to do a better job of elections in this country, and i thinkve g weve got to put mor resources and in our elections so people dont have to stand in long lines and were not waiting three or four days for votes to be counted. This is no way to run a dp democracy. All important points, we appreciate all of you. I want to show everyone another live look here in the battleground state of pennsylvania, which we were just discussing. Vote counting in philadelphia, were going to go live to each battleground state and give you the latest and the facts over the feelings when we come back. Who takes care of yourself. Counties continue to report results, and again, these results are coming in more slowly than they have in the past, so we have to be patient, but confident that these votes are going to be counted. Elections matter. Completing this general election is a huge hurdle, but its far from the end of our work. Youve just been listening to pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf talking about patience and georgias top Elections Official say they hope to get all of that you are counting done today. Battleground states are looking also towards runoff races. We have several states that hang in the balance. The presidency on the line, were watching it all closely. The list, of course, includes michigan, pennsylvania, georgia, and North Carolina. We have nbc news data that shows there are over 20 million estimated votes that are left to be counted and the state Officials Say they will count all the votes, and thats how its going to be. We have our team fanned out across battleground states, theyve been working hard obviously, a long day yesterday and it continues today. Dasha burns in kent county, michigan, Priscilla Thompson in beg gwinnett county, trymaine lee in guilford county, North Carolina. Reporter as the world waits for michigan, we are watching what is going on in this very room here in the city of grand rapids, 58,000 absentee ballots waiting on results here. These election workers behind me, they have been up all night. Remember, they were not able to start counting these ballots until yesterday morning, and weve talked about patience a lot today. This is a process that is slow, its methodical. It takes time. Take a look at whats happened. Take a look over here, this group of folks hovered over the computer, they are looking at any ballots that have any sort of stray marks be it a coffee stain, an extra pen mark, and youve got democratic and republican challengers there watching over the process. In fact, the head of the kent county gop standing right there. Im going to bring you over here with me to this part of the room where we have all of the ballots that have been counted so far, and there are a lot of them. The grand rapids city clerk tells me they are expecting results today, though we dont know exactly what time, and ari, i have to tell you, everything thats happening in the state of michigan, none of this is surprising. We have been saying for weeks that the results the state of the race will look a certain way on Election Night and into the morning, and then as the absentee vote from these major metro areas start to come in, its going to start to shift, and thats why were watching grand rapids, 58,000 votes in this tight race both for joe biden and donald trump, but also the senate race here, gary peters and john james. What happens here in grand rapids is going to have an impact on what the race looks like here in michigan. Ari. Appreciate the great reporting and we can literally see how it works and that theres nothing amiss, dasha walking us through and seeing actually where the ballots go as they track transparently with all eyes and all cameras watching, how this works. Lets go right out to priscilla in georgia. Reporter ari, we now know more than 200,000 absentee ballots here in the state of georgia are being counted right now as we speak. The secretary of state earlier today saying that we will have those results by the end of the day today, and the lions share of those ballots are in Fulton County followed by dekalb county. Those are two areas in the Metro Atlanta area considered democratic strongholds so expect it to help tilt the race for joe biden, but i should also point out that there are absentee ballots also being counted in some smaller Rural Counties that could potentially give donald trump a bump, and to put that into context, right now joe biden is trailing donald trump by around 90,000 votes. This is shaping up to be an incredibly tight race, which could lend itself to legal challenges as tight races sometimes do. And so one of the things that were keeping an eye on here is that u. S. Postal service case that is making its way through federal ports. One of the things about georgia is that those absentee ballots had to be returned by the time polls closed on tuesday, and nbc has obtained federal court documents, which show that around 18 of mail in atlanta that was set at post offices yesterday and was not processed, and it is very possible that some of that mail may have been absentee ballots, and so that is definitely something that were keeping an eye on to see if there are going to be any legal challenges related to that. Ari. Thank you. Really important context there including the outstanding legal issues. I think we have trymaine lee, take it away. Reporter ari, with just tens of thousands of votes separating donald trump and joe biden in North Carolina, everyone is on edge. We made a call to state Election Officials earlier and said when we might when might we expect some word about when they actually might close. Well have a sense of whats going on. They literally laughed at us. There was something really concerning emerging out of guilford county, greensboro here, apparently from that federal order from the judge that said that they have to sweep Postal Service facilities, only 72 of the mailin ballots were delivered on time, so its troubling for a lot of folks, ari. Thank you, im told because we have mara barrett now in pittsburgh, pennsylvania, go ahead, please. Hey, ari, im in Allegheny County where to this side of the warehouse where theyre counting ballots, it looks like a normal day after election day. Theyre returning the Voting Machines that were used on election day, but actually, if you look just down over here in this private room, they are still processing and counting ballots. Were watching via this live fe feed, pennsylvania is very much going to come down to the mailin vote. About 50 of the 2. 5 million that have been returned across the state have already been counted. Here in Allegheny County, which is a democratic stronghold, one that bidens team is very much focusing on and relying on to overall win the state, they actually had to halt their counting overnight to give their election workers a break. And another reason why theres been a delay here is actually because these ballots that were turned in ahead of time have been sitting in boxes in their envelopes creased and folded and so flattening out these ballots took extra time before they could put them into the scanning machine. You might ask why were they sitting there that long. Pennsylvania doesnt allow state Election Officials to open or preprocess their ballots before election day. They could only do that at 7 00 a. M. Yesterday, and this happened, they tried to pass new state legislation to let them preprocess ballots early because this is the secretary of state said this would actually alleviate any delays, but republicans in the state house held up that legislation not allowing it to happen. So when donald trump is talking about not loving these mailin ballots after the fact, its actually state republicans that held up what could have solved for delays here in pennsylvania. Ari. Stay with me. Thats such an important point you raise. Here we are waking up the next day after the election without a final result all eyes on that big, big prize of pennsylvania, and youre explaining to us that because pandemic voting is up and mail voting is up and mail ballots are folded in half and itting is the sitting there and they werent allowed to process that in advance, youre saying thats just the normal expected part of why this is taking longer. How is that playing out in the state . Is everyone aware of that . Is the patience thats being called for by Election Officials being heeded . Reporter for the most part, but its also only day one after election day. We can expect to be waiting for at least the next three days because of new pandemic allowances for flexibility, any ballots that come in ahead of friday 5 00 p. M. Will be allowed to be counted. They are going to be segregated and then counted after the fact, but these are all just theres been a lot of moving parts here in pennsylvania both legally, lawsuits holding up adding to confusion here in pennsylvania, but this preprocessing thing was one that was very much focused on by both county Election Officials, the secretary of state, everyone, the governor included was pushing the state house to allow preprocessing to happen because they said that it would have prevented for any delays, so thats what were looking at here in pennsylvania, and well j just to see if pennsylvanians and the rest of the country frankly, continue to be patient. Really important facts and context all around from our very hardworking reporters, many pulling basically all nighters. Appreciate you guys. Well be checking back in with you of course throughout the days ahead. We got to break. When we come back, people say waiting is the hardest part. President trump falsely claiming he won. We have the latest now from both campaigns. Developments out of the trump side on that recount and a lot more votes trickling in. Well have you covered next. Hi, im pat and im 75 years old. We live in the mountains so i like to walk. Im really busy in my life; im always doing something. Im not a person thats going to sit too long. I feel a little bit brighter and my mind just feels sharper. I would recommend it to anyone. It absolutely works. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. We made usaa insurance for veterans like martin. When a hailstorm hit, he needed his insurance to get it done right, right away. Usaa. What youre made of, were made for. Usaa welcome back, ari melber with you here anchoring special election coverage. We dont have a call obviously on the overall results, but we do have new data from the crucial state of wisconsin. We just got this, i want to tell you, 99 of the vote is now in, and nbc still saying this is too close to call. 20,000 votes separate the candidates in this crucial state. There are eight states that we still have outstanding, biden leading with 227 Electoral College votes to Donald Trumps 213. Now, as weve been reporting in the early hours of the morning, President Trump came out and said something false, even though neither nbc nor any other outlet, if you want to look broadly, has found a winner, he just declared that he thinks hes won the race. Millions of ballots, of course, still being counted. Some of them in the mail. Donald trump claiming the ballots are also, quote, a fraud on the American Public and he wants to take legal action to stop voting, this the leader of a democracy in the United States saying that. The votes are being counted nonetheless in these battleground states. Both the trump ask biden teams making their arguments for their paths to victory. As weve stressed to be fair until you get to 270, people have different potential paths. Now having done the data and the mailin vote and the reports from the ground, we turn to another important part of this story this hour, two of our nbc colleagues who have been meticulously following every twist and turn of these campaigns. Carol, i want to turn to you first, and i think the question here is a little bit tougher, but im sure you can enlighten us because youve been tracking all of this, what im hearing and i was watching this like you were last night into today is a twotrack message from the trump folks. The president saying things that weve been Fact Checking because they are false, and then some of the Campaign Advisers including bill steppien within the last hour saying things that are more the legitimate version of what the president s calling for. Mr. Stepien saying they want to pursue a legal recount in wisconsin, thats valid. Thats an option for them. Reporter its a great point, ari, you had the president early this morning coming out and falsely saying that he many won this election, and then you have his campaign telling reporters this morning that this is very much still in play and outlining how they see this playing out from their perspective, and from their perspective they think they have several paths all of which lead to President Trump winning reelection. I can walk you through the various states. They feel good about North Carolina and georgia, pennsylvania is possible, arizona is also they see as possible. Michigan, nevada, theyre still trying to make the case that something could happen there. Thats the spin. Thats how they see things. In terms of concrete action, what weve seen from the Trump Campaign so far is the Campaign Manager coming out and saying that they will request a recount in wisconsin where, as you just showed, bidens margin is less than 1 of the vote so theyre within their rights to do that. That will not happen for a couple of days, but hes saying essentially that its a razor thin race. The president is well within the threshold to request a recount and will immediately do so. Meanwhile, the president still claims that this is there is something sort of nefarious or unfair about this vote count that continues in all of these states less than 24 hours after the polls closed, and hes issuing multiple tweets. Ill read you one of his tweet, hes saying last night i was leading often solidly in many key states, in almost all instances democrat run and controlled, and then one by one they started to magically disappear as ballot dumps were counted, very strange. He goes on to say the pollsters got this wrong. Obviously the ballots theres a magically disappearing lead that the president had, theyre starting to count these votes, mostly mailin ballots. Where we stand now is that the ballot count still continues, the Trump Campaign is geared up for potential legal challenges on multiple fronts, and meanwhile also trying to sending out fundraising solicitations saying that the president , they need contributions from supporters because the president , they are trying to steal the election from the president , which obviously there is not evidence of that. Right, appreciate the context there. I mean, in fairness to mr. Stepien this is a lawful democracy and you outlined why they may seek that recount, and well all follow the results of that in that state. As for what the president says, bemoaning the fact you were up in the 5th inning and youre down in the 8th inning is not relevant to the game. We just have to see the score at the end of the game. Ali vitali on the other side, because were learning everything from both campaigns, whats your reporting show . Reporter yeah, eventually were going to get to the courts of law. Right now i think all of this is very much playing out in the courts of public opinion. We saw what donald trump did last night coming out and without any evidence or reality claiming that he was the winner of this election. The Biden Campaign sort of expected that. Our sources were saying while that was a dangerous move and watching it play out was eerie, at the same time this is a scenario they had prepared for. Its why they had laid out with all of us reporters so many times they felt they had multiple paths to victory. Whats changed as the sun came up in wilmington this morning is both campaigns were armed with a lot of new data, and both of them are trying to make the argument that they see both paths to victory. The Biden Campaign i would point out does still have more paths to victory than the Trump Campaign. The Trump Campaign always had a narrower needle to thread here. I think the key, what this means for the race is we expect to hear from the biden team a little bit later today. Biden himself specifically, unclear what hes going to say there, but the big difference is that both of these Campaign Teams might be saying that they see a path to victory, but theres a big difference in what the two principle players here are doing, the way that donald trump came out last night and the way that joe biden came out last night saying that he thinks hes on the path to visit ctory because hes not there yet ali, you know the business, theyre telling both of us were over timement real quick, though, the president really did break precedent in those Early Morning hours. Do you have any indication of whether the biden folks see this as something to basically ignore . Doesnt matter, follow the numbers or whether they need to clap back at some point today to that . Theyve always been a follow the numbers group, but at the same time weve seen the bullishness only grow with them. Theyve started mirroring that kind of confidence that weve seen out of the Trump Campaign, and frankly, wisconsin is a state that they feel good about. I think that the word of the day this morning was patience, and now its getting a little impatient because they would love to see that state called for them. That being said, though, when you hear bill stepien saying words like recount, wisconsin is one of those places that you can request that if its as close as it is right now, below one point margin between these two candidates. What it means is that the biden folks can do this with wisconsin, its in their formula, but frankly, it may be better for them if they can do it without it because we know that thats one of the states thats going to go down a legal rabbit hole pretty quickly. I see nothing in a different way and its my moment so i just gotta say nothing is everything. Skyrizi may increase your risk of infections and lower your ability to fight them. Before treatment, your doctor should check you for infections and tuberculosis. Tell your doctor if you have an infection or symptoms, such as fevers, sweats, chills, muscle aches, or coughs or if you plan to or recently received a vaccine. Nothing is everything. Woman now is the time to ask your dermatologist about skyrizi. Welcome back, im ari melber with you for msnbcs special election coverage. Theres one thing clear here on the congressional side. Democrats had many plans in hopes of winning back separate from the white house the senate in this election. We heard a lot about why that was on the table. Those efforts are taking more and more hits. Susan collins today, who was supposed to be one of the most vulnerable republican incumbent senators announcing that the democrat in the race sarah gideon has already called her to concede. Gideon confirming that. That all but assures as we count up that democrats wont be in a position to win back control of the u. S. Senate. They believed that was still possible when this election counting began last night, and they out raised this is important, incumbent republicans in many key races. Democrats also retaining control of the house, but nbc projecting that republicans will hold over 200 seats. Thats also more than many had expected, including some republicans leading into this election. Were now joined by someone who was not in cycle or on the ballot last night, senator Sherrod Brown from ohio. We should note nbc projects trump winning that state. A busy time, so first of all, senator, thank you for joining us. Of course, thanks, ari, good to be with you. Thanks. Great to have you k baback. You and i have spoken before. Let me pay you a stylistic compliment to open this up. You are known for telling it like it is. Youre not, i would say, the typical plastic politician, and so im wondering what youre going to say today, telling it like it is when clearly in congress weve done a lot of careful talk about why trump is wrong and the numbers are out in 270, but in the congress not a great night for democrats. Why, and does it relate, in your view, to any of the issues youve championed, populist, jobs, taking on wall street, was there enough of that . First, ari, when you said stylistic, i thought it was a compliment on my hair, but i dont hear that that often. Anyway, thank you. Yeah, it was a bad night, but it was i think that, you know, i mean, were seeing people so much two sides of this country that donald trump, if donald trump won the state then people voted for senators and house members in that state mostly or at least in those competitive areas. So i think that its more sort of tribalism like that. I do think that democrats need to sharpen our message. I mean, joe biden won this election, it looks like he won, im pretty sure he won, because he was the most proworker candidate that weve nominated in either party for a generation i only got to jump in, senator, to say hes up in some key ways weve measured, but he hasnt won the Electoral College yet. Well, nobodys won until the votes are fully counted, i get that. Hes going to win wisconsin and michigan, hes very likely going to win pennsylvania, he very well could win georgia. Thats well more, plus the nebraska district, even without pennsylvania and georgia he has enough Electoral College votes, but i know its not certified and thats the argument when they count all the votes mr. President to trump and to his k accolites and his followers. The fact is biden is the most proworker candidate. I think thats why he won in tough states and tough areas. I was of course disappointed in ohio, but my state is becoming increasingly difficult. Its still very winnable. I won it by almost the same margin trump did last night, presumably i won it by that amount two years earlier. Progressive democrats what about maine . Whats that . What about maine, though . Why cant your Senate Colleagues pick up a state like that . What does that tell you, if anything . Thats one state. One very important state. I just dont entirely accept that we cant win the senate. Were likely going to have two georgia runoffs. Were going to have one, we could have two that would put us at 50. I know thats drawing to an inside straight, beut its stil possible. Susan collins had been getting 60 of the vote in election after election after election. She is agile. She knows how to navigate the treacherous waters of apparently maine politics, so give some credit to her agility in being all things to all people and getting away with it, and so i dont know. But in most of these states, we won colorado and hickenlooper won, we won arizona, and kelly won. It looks like were losing North Carolina and our candidate there is probably losing. In georgia we may win, and were requesti going to have a georgia runoff. So thats really whats happening, but its still the democrats need a populist were on your side kind of message, sharper than its been that biden i think made pretty well and maybe our Senate Candidates fell a little short on it, i dont know. And the road ahead briefly that you see in a coequal branch of government,i your reaction to what the president said in these Early Morning hours, have you ever seen anything like that in the history of the country . No, the president s broken all norms, and thats his attractiveness, unfortunately, to some people that seem to support him for that. But i think that biden, bidens a guy to use executive orders. Joe biden and i flew out to columbus in 2016 to announce the overtime rule, almost 5 million americans would get paid overtime for the overtime they actually were working, which the laws were such that they werent, the rules. They introduce that had executive order, President Biden president obama. Trump essentially rolled it back costing in my state alone 100,000 workers overtime. Thats the kind of thing a president whos on our side, who cares about workers, who cares about the dignity of work, thats what biden will do. He will do a number of things like that that matter, and thats what our job is. Biden gets that, trump of course didnt care about that. Senate democrats will follow along on that. Right. Senator Sherrod Brown, thank you very much as always. Very breastiinteresting stuff. I appreciate your time, your clarity and well be right back. Thank you so much. Thank you. Welcome back, were in special coverage, were covering many angles this hour, a former congressman from republican. Republicans just won back the seat he held two years after he lost it. You are a portrait, or at least in the position of, for a polarizing climb. Im just curious, big picture, what they are settling in. No matter who wins is how and why the republicans under druch made big gains among latino voters all over the country. In 2016, they won by nearly 30 points in this county. The difference in miamidade is a big chunk for donald trump in the and reaching out to countries all over the country. They are wondering if they should some up and they are wondering if they should be an economic message rather than a health and Public Safety measure. What about the negative. They know how to hand a punch. Is that maying well particularly in florida . I think that the Biden Campaign they have a choice of attack here. Floridas Hispanic Community was a baseball that they used against democrats and they scared that away. But now they believe that the Democratic Party moved too far to the left. So certainly the Biden Campaign could have gotten out in front of that earlier and had they done so this state might have at least been a little closer. Do you think democrats have assumed too much of a monolithic approach and that lawful immigrants are basically more open to the kind of immigration track counties that they pursue than some expected . I think that democrats in many ways have taken the Latino Community for granted assuming it is a monolithic block. Assuming that everyone has the same position on the immigration issue. Assuming that it would be a top priority for latino families. Those are very important issues, but now the United States is very diverse and that includes in miamidade county. We have people from cuba, argentina, all over the americas, and you have to learn how to reach out and speak to all of these communities individually. Really important points. On a lighter note, one thing that we can all celebrate carl will not be a recount. A model you may debt debate on being a model just on counting. Thank you, sir, for spending the hour with us.
