Its almost like a hail mary context the stakes of new pass. Strength in the cities of new place. And minnesota senator klobuchar at this point, its like the hell with it. Hampshire. Seven largest cities in the lets just see what works. Who seemed to capitalize on the state lined up with sanders. If nothing else has worked, ill strong debate performance the be myself, and it worked, you know . Other night finishing in a that was a more natural all of them with sanders tonight connection. Surprise third place. The nevada thing and what she the weakness that he had one of does now is a whole separate problem. Neither senator warren or biden got enough votes to qualify for the weaknesses he had was in i mean shes got like 30 staff in nevada. Delegates in New Hampshire. A lot of them are beto former bedroom communities. Sanders took to the stage in new beto people or people who are in hampshire to celebrate with his outside of manchester in bedford iowa who drove through the night this is a big residential to nevada to get set up. Supporters. Let me say tonight that this shes got to do this whole new community. Thing now of introducing herself klobuchar won it. In a place where she has done almost no ground work. Buttigieg on her heels. Victory here is the beginning of this is a big, big night for sanders at 16 . The end for donald trump. Saw this in bedroom communities. Her, but dont underestimate the got to the issue for klobuchar challenge. And buttigieg. Each splitting potentially a i want to start tonight with similar vote. Can i say it was a little each would have liked to have over a year ago, mason city, iowa. More. I was at her very First Campaign of course our own in the latest sanders struggled a bit in the event. It was at this cafe restaurant bar, like sub freezing temperatures, her first event in numbers. Iowa. 94 . Suburban areas. Literally right before shes yound buttigieg. One other thing, two other key arriving, her advance staff of things to note. Two individuals, they were turn out. Were tabulating the final 6 of literally unpacking a microphone the vote. System because they realized at this point if you look at all they didnt have a microphone for the candidate. Of the cities and towns that some of the campaigns, you know, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, they had apparatuses reported 100 . And money. But buttigieg and klobuchar, turn out is higher than 2008. They showed up. They were upstarts. The clinton, obama and eds wards year. Much higher than 2016. Were missing mike memoli, who is in South Carolina because joe that is significant given what happened in iowa. Biden ditched New Hampshire and went on to South Carolina. Turn out an hour and a half ago blew through the 2016 level and may surpass the 2008 clinton you guys have all covered biden obama race. While youve been on the trail. Remember that one. What happened with him . All the interest and excitement for democrats. Is this the end from what you this may surpass that. Can see . The crowds were always a lot and we always say a delegate smaller. Are his crowds different in South Carolina . Race. I felt like his crowds in 24 National Convention delegates up for grabs here. Iowa and New Hampshire were sort this is how theyll split. Of like gatherings where everyone sort of furrowed their sanders won the votes. Brow and all agreed like, wow, were really in a bad place as a country. He and buttigieg are both going but then when you asked them to walk away with Nine National about biden and their support of them, it was sort of like shrug, im supporting him, yeah. Convention delegates. Klobuchar with six. What does that mean in terms of and liking joe biden is not the same as wanting to vote for joe biden. The National Situation . Voters for all the other after two initial contests. Democratic candidates will tell you i think joe biden is a great guy. I thought he did a great job buttigieg 23. Sanders 21, warren 8, klobuchar standing by the president when he was v. P. What a great guy, been through 7, joe biden from iowa getting so much. Not his time. 6. And you can see for them a long way to g for them. Exit polling today showed Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg as the two candidates who folks anyway, you have to get to believed were the most electable over donald trump. The one whos will siphon off support from joe biden. Id still rather wake up and be joe biden tomorrow than Elizabeth Warren, right . Really . I think so. 1,991. Whats the Elizabeth Warren all right. Argument tomorrow morning . Amazing work tonight as always. Joining me now national cochair whats the next state she wins . For senator sanders 2020. I think they would argue they didnt have add bad a night in campaign. Do you and the campaign consider sanders a front runner now. Iowa as a lot of us have said they had. They still feel like they yes. He is the front runner. Overperformed what she was expected to do and beat biden in we won the popular vote in iowa the process. And the popular vote here in new the thing i keep hearing is theres 98 of delegates still hampshire. Were moving strong into nevada on the table. And South Carolina. One thing thats interesting yeah, you lost in your own backyard, but they cant pick a to me. Theres a theory of the campaign state going down the pipeline of were definitely going to win there. With sanders. Organizing and mobilizing. I think they know they missed an opportunity on the debate stage. But being aggressive on the i think a lot of people felt a debate stage as a woman gut punch by the iowa turn out numbers. Tonight you have higher turn is a double edge sword. Out. Do you feel like the theory is presenting itself . Thats what people liked i do. About her so much is she was in iowa if i may go back there fighting. Fight hard, win big. For a bit, the turn out among exactly. Dont you have to fight hard for that part of it to work . What someone said to me young people 17 to 29 was higher tonight was they sort of hope that tonight is a kick in the than it was in 2008. Butt. They used a little more colorful language. Also in 2016. That group did come out. Higher rates. They hope this is a turn it senators always said if we can get great turn out we can win. Around moment of can we bring back the fighter, the person who went after the banks, the person and get them interested in their who went after the obama own future through the power of administration, the person who was a fighter . The ballot box and animate them shes kind of gotten to be milquetoast with this unity and show them a vision of message. Youre going to south somebody willing to stand strong carolina. In the presidency to change the material conditions in their youre going to nevada. Lives. The Culinary Union in nevada youre going to have some good food. Of course very powerful in then its super tuesday and Democratic Politics there. Suddenly this race is going to they have not made an be very interesting. It will be the conventions, and november will be here, and this endorsement among the will all be a distant memory. Candidates. Thank you guys so much. They put out a flir. Chris, im going to throw it back to you over there. Going after obliquely medicare thank you so much. For all. Good luck in your copious travels to come. Up next, the story lines these politicians never sat at leaving New Hampshire and how much Michael Bloomberg figures into the race as we head to nevada and beyond. Well be right back with more the bargaining table. From manchester right after this. And we have to make an employer sensei a live bookkeeper is helping customize pay for healthcare. Whats your response to that coming from a union. The senator had the opportunity to talk to the culinary workers union. Theres nobody more prounion than senator sanders. Part of his platform the vision is to do away with right to work states. That hinder workers from being able to organize. The senator will continue to communicate healthcare for all. Universal healthcare is a right in the country. What we have to do is a deeper job in helping people who have the healthcare through a job understand its always tenuous. You can be fired at any moment. Your employer can change the quickbooks for me. Insurance. live bookkeeper okay, youre all set up. Why not join with the rest of the sisters and brothers in this sensei thanks country and help to guarantee healthcare as a human right. That was my business gi, and not have the union see that this ones casual. vo get set up right with a live bookkeeper as a threat against something they have. With intuit quickbooks. Well keep working towards it. I should note iowa and new they have businesses to grow hampshire are both customers to care for lives to get home to overwhelmingly white states. I notice that. They use stamps. Com print discounted postage for any letter and exit polling suggests any package any time sanders won among nonwhite right from your computer voters. All the Amazing Services of the post office only cheaper 10 of the electorate here. It seems according to marble get our special tv offer polling and exit polls there a 4week trial plus postage and a digital scale have been a more multiracial go to stamps. Com tv and never go to the post office again coalition around sanders this time. Last time. Theres a question of whether theres a ceiling. Heading into South Carolina and you have been doing a ton of work. How do things look. Theres not a ceiling. Were running a multiculture ethnic racial and gender campaign. We saw that in iowa. And some people want to discount the black and brown folks in iowa and brown folks in New Hampshire, they do exist and they matter. They want the same things black people want in South Carolina or nevada. We cant discount them. Last time it was the senator couldnt get the black vote. Now he is. People want to move the goal post. We are winning among the coalition that is the strongest dominating coalition within the Democratic Party. And this is how well defeat President Trump. All right. Heading to South Carolina. I am. I appreciate it. I want to turn to democratic congresswoman of New Hampshire. Who is endorsed mayor Pete Buttigieg for president. The question for you about that decision to endorse. I think its fairs to say the mayor has come out of nowhere in the last year. Now he has split the first two contests. In terms of delegates. Netted two more. Why did you make the decision to endorse him . What tipped you over . Hello, america. Im Amy Klobuchar, and i will beat donald trump. Sure, actually i would say hes won the contest in terms of my heart is full tonight. Delegate selection. Listen he can put together a while there are still ballots coalition of Winning Coalition left to count, we have beaten and its going to include not the odds every step of the way. Just the progress i have democrats. Obviously thats the core. Its going to include the here with me once more this independent what we call hour, lynn sweet, victoria mcgrane, olivia nuzzi and sahil undeclared voters in new kapur. Hampshire. There is something you were he did very well with them. Going to say about how candidates are talking about you can tell by the towns that their effect. Came in in his favor. And really these disaffected republicans. We heard some of them even use he likes to call them the future those words tonight, coattails. Former republicans. Right. I know that theyre just fed up the democratic debate last with trump. Friday put it in the most focus and they want an alternative. When biden said to a wide we talk about this coalition audience that if bernie is at coming together and i think you can see that demonstrated in new the top of the ticket with his socialism or socialist i hampshire. Cant remember the exact very high turn out among our quote it could damage the chance of taking over the voters groups we have targeted. Senate. The good news is we held our own and the thing i hope becomes with students in my district. Part of the discussion, and i in hanover. Wrote about this in the column that just went up. We did very well. Really voters when they weigh and we obviously did well with what theyre doing have two things. The late breaking voters. This is a tandem package. We won the late breaking voters. Who could win the white house and would could flip the senate . Im very excited about it. Im glad i made the decision. You mention the different parts of the coalition the mayor but why should voters have to make that decision . Is putting together places where what does any voter know about what the answer to that question he over performed. Is . Thats a question about the future. Of course no democratic nominee which of these six people are going to be best in this swing can win the Party Nomination district in virginia 11 . Who knows . Without strong support of from that im not saying. Voters of color. Im saying when there is a nominee of the senate candidates, if bernie is the top the mayor has struggled in of the ticket, there is polling so far on that front. Potential for extra aggravation the question is what does the to the democrats running as opposed to no aggravation with Campaign View as what they have the others. To do in the next two contests since the obama and more broadly. Administration, the republicans absolutely the top priority i have been calling every democrat a socialist. Think he needs to get better and it hasnt stuck. They won the house. Known. What he likes to say is hes done very well in areas where he i actually think its harder is known. To kind of fear monger about and just as in New Hampshire we Bernie Sanders because there are republicans who do like him. Didnt know him. Hes got a campaign hes he does have broader appeal than you would think. Building out in nevada. He does have kind of a populist message that can appeal to working people, blue collar and South Carolina. As people get to know him, hes people. So i think its kind of a mistake to think that he could gotten strong endorsements. So easily be turned into this Anthony Brown from the like the socialist boogeyman who Congressional Black Caucus went would terrify anybody and couldnt go anywhere in the south. To iowa and New Hampshire. That will continue to grow. He has a pretty effective comeback. What youll see in a few weeks donald trump, he lies about time is that he will be making everything and nothing gets head way bringing together under his skin. Absolutely a Coalition People of he does better than donald trump among independent voters. Color, hes got younger people. Bernie sanders does better against donald trump with older people. Independent voters than pete lots of women supporting him. Buttigieg in head to head polls. I think its a doubleedged sword. With Bernie Sanders at the top obviously men as well. Of the ticket, you may lose some affluent suburban voters. And just a Broad Coalition of americans that really want to this is something that house turn the page on this democratic lawmakers, especially the new ones who won in 2018, to administration. Not just win in november, but your point, lynn, are absolutely concerned about. Really how are we going to bring i think they know their districts well. This country together and heal like i think colin allred has a the divide in the country. So that we can all go onto sense of his district and i think hes probably right when greater opportunity for every hes going around endorsing joe biden or andy kim. American. Final question. Like i take those people at their word about what their if you were speaking to a districts are. Reporter from another country just covering the race. But i think when you look at the beaming into the race. And that reporter said ho on electoral math, democratic voters are being asked to make earth did a 30 something mayor this complicated calculation . From a college town in the whats wrong with that . Midwest end up performing like because the thing is to get this in the first two contests. The president of the united states. Whats the sentence review you they are being asked to answer a give to explain that . Question that is, by definition, unknowable. I want to say two things. Youre going to voters and saying, what will happen in the future, voter . One i noticed early on in the and the voter says, i dont know what will happen in the future. Obama administration that i was very much a part of. Its a values driven so, pete on the stump talks about his plans for prescription organization. Drug prices. Right. Including people, respecting people and empowering people. Well, he didnt mention that hr3 has already been passed by and so the Buttigieg Campaign the democrats. It seems a reasonable took that to the next step with Prescription Drug plan. The rules of the road. It could be changed, amended, worked on. Every office wint in we had 15 it is going nowhere in the senate. Offices in New Hampshire. So when he talks as if he just had these sten sild on the wall the values they carry forward. Discovered this issue, its not and i want to talk about the the way it seems. No, dont get me wrong. Its a major issue for house temperment of the candidat with. Democrats and theyve passed a bill. So to me, the answer isnt just a lot of pressure. Talking about your policy not a lot of sleep. Variations, which might be he never varied from a calm differences with no distinction since they have to go through the senate. Demeanor. So the American People are but, no, heres the question exhausted by this president. That i think voters in a democracy need to answer. Were worn out by the who do you want to wield power . Who do you want to be the president . I think asking voters to mac a deviciveness. The uncertainty in our lives. Very complicated calculation. Buttigieg brings a vision for youre going to go to the polls in New Hampshire today and you the future. With healthcare for every say to yourself, he might lose american. And just to hit on your last some of those suburban voters. Segment hes not going to take but he may pick up some of those healthcare away from any industrial midwest. Youre asking people to american that likes the plan they have. I put more faith into people, or the unions that worked hard especially in this state. [ overlapping voices ] to get that benefit. Making sure we tackle Climate Change, respect all americans, this is sort of the problem is that people arent thinking but really its that temperment. About this as who do i want to win and wield power. Theyre thinking about who can beat donald trump. I noticed talking to voters was the big differential. That does not excite voters. Its enervating. Values and temper meant. Its the opposite of exciting. Who would be the perfect candidate to appeal across all thank you for making time. These different divides, that its great to be with you. Doesnt seem to excite people. What does excite people is clinding the road warriors somebody who they agree with. Who do i want to see wield joinings live. Power . And the massive story unfolding about a genuine crisis at the one of the reasons Bernie Justice department. Sanders supporters are no longer buying a lot of this Colonial Penn can help. Electability talk is look who the party nominated the last several times and lost. Hillary clinton, john kerry, al gore. In this election season we have been told by some that you must be either for revolution or you are for the status quo. But where does that leave the rest of us. Most americans do not see where they fit in that polarized wheneveryone is different. A, vision and we cant defeat the which is why Xfinity Mobile created most devisive president in a different kind of wireless network. Americans want the freedom to make choices for themselves on health care or any other issue, not to have washington decide for them. And the politics of my way or the highway is a road to reelecting donald trump. Vulnerable americans do not have the luxury of pursuingide logical purity over an inclusive victory. We also we know this. We are back live in New Hampshire as we watch the results coming in tonight, we we also know better than to try are also watching what has been to defeat such a disruptive happening in washington, d. C. Today. The president of the united states, who not even a week ago president by relying on such a was acquitted of abuse of power, mind set. Has been on a postimpeachment if todays washington were retaliation spree, a purge. Serving america well a guy like donald trump would never come and now hes taking a step further by interfering in the within cheating distance of the oval office in the first place. Criminal prosecution of his longtime friend and adviser roger stone. It started yesterday when prosecutors recommended stone serve up to nine years in prison for lying to congress and so to win and to govern we need witness tampering, both about to bring new voices to our things that happened in the capital. Trump campaign, both to benefit we need to get washington President Trump. Starting to work more like our then early this morning, at 1 48 bestrun cities and towns you a. M. , President Trump tweeted that the sentencing was unfair and a miscarriage of justice. And sure enough today, Justice Department officials intervened to recommend a more lenient sentence. Over the course of the day, all four prosecutors, one after might be dismissed as a naiive another, withdrew from the case, including one who resigned from newcomer. The department. But a fresh outlook is what now tonight, get this, nbc news reporting attorney general bill makes new looks possible. It is how you build a new majority. Barr has taken control of several legal matters of personal interest to president donald trump. Heres how former u. S. Attorney Harry Lippman put it, quote, the and election after election has worst crisis for the department shown us putting forward a new of justice easily since nixons perspective is how democrats win attorney John Mitchell if not the white house, and we will win before. John mitchell, of course, went to jail. What happened today was a the white house. Fundamental, serious, disturbing breakdown in the basic rule of law and independence of the Justice Department. Here to talk about it is nbc president pete news and security analyst matt miller, a former chief spokesman for the Justice Department for president pete more on this. Matt, i think sometimes people president pete so as we take this campaign who are not used to dealing with to the rest of the country, doj or the culture of doj lets welcome that debate. Independence, particularly the lets have that debate. Independence of line prosecutors lets debate what the best way on cases, particularly in the forward is. The best way to earn the white postnixon landscape, it is hard house and the best way to unify this country. To communicate just how crazy what happened today was. How would you communicate to the answers, they lie in the vision that brings americans someone who is not familiar with those norms . Together not only in the knowledge of what we must stand you know, that is exactly right, chris. Against and the confidence of knowing what we are for. Ive been struggling all day to try to come up with a way to say that this is not the way the department of justice is supposed to work. This is the powerful majority i think its hard to overstate that we are gathering together how unusual this is, how inappropriate it is, and how striking for these four career from davenport, carson city to federal prosecutors to take this columbia. Name off this new sentencing it is addition, not subtraction. Memo that the department sent today and for one of them to resign over it, to leave the department completely, thats not something i ever heard of it is a movement reaching into happening. We saw some civil attorneys Church Basements and refuse to sign a brief earlier in this administration when the department backed off its barbershops, universities and union halls, carrying the same longstanding position, but for it to happen in a criminal case, values with us everywhere we go. I cant recall it ever we saw that coalition awakening. Happening. I think what it means, i think we saw it tonight in cities, the Justice Department more than suburbs from the sea coast to any other Cabinet Agency has those industrial towns too often really been poised kind of on a left behind. Knifes edge since donald trump became president. We know what he wants out of the Justice Department. He wants it to protect him and and together we are building a protect his cronies, and he wants it to go after his political opponents. Future that there will be no and at times the department has such thing as an uninsured held the line and resisted that, american or unaffordable and at times especially since prescription. Bill barr became a. G. , theyve given him exactly what he wants. And i think the headline from today is that postwatergate that is what we can deliver with norm that you talked about at the beginning of your question a plan that most americans can where the department made get behind. Medicare for all that want it, criminal decisions independent of the white house, that norm is dead. It is gone. Insuring care for every american the department of justice under and trusting you to choose donald trump does not function that way anymore. Whether you want it or when you i just want to give people a sense of why this is so important. Want it. Presumably if you believe there together we will stop enabling should be no independence, no arms length between the president and the attorney corporate greed and start general, the president can call raising wages, empowering up the attorney general and say, i just saw matt miller on television. Workers and making good on the i dont like what he had to say. Idea that one job ought to be enough. Open up an investigation into matt miller and if you can come up with some charges, charge him. That happens. There are many places in the world where that happens. Thats not a farfetched i mean thats what were looking into, it occurs to me right now. President pete president pete yeah. It is a slide from being a president pete functioning democracy to a banana republic. Its not overstating to say that president pete and we switch from buttigieg because if a president can use headquarters to sanders the power of the state to go after his enemies or its just as important to be able to headquarters. Nbc news having projected that reward his cronies, its one he is your winner at the end of thing to start investigations r this night. The ukraine scandal. Hes gotten the department doing that, going after former Intelligence Officers with this probe that bill barr is starting into the origins of the election. But its also to use the power of the state to overlook criminality by yourself and your associates, which is the other thing hes using the Justice Department for. That is one of the definitions of autocracy. I want to read what the thank you. Former department of justice i. G. Said. Memo to all career doj employees. This is not what you signed up for. Four prosecutors are bailed on the stone case have shown the way. Report all instances of improper political influence and other misdeeds. Bernie i want to note on mr. John bernie kravitz, what he did today was bernie extraordinary. Bernie thank you. He didnt just take his name off that brief or resign from the case, he resigned from the department of justice altogether. Thank you. This is someone with a sterling reputation and long distinguished career at department of justice. And today he gave up his job over this. Yeah. He walked out of the department, which must have been so hard to do. I am so proud of the career officials who refuse to bow to political pressure and withdraw a recommendation that they knew was justice, a sentencing recommendation that was consistent with what the thank you sentencing guidelines called for. Thank you. But you know what . Its a disgrace that they were the ones that had to hold the line against political thank you. Interference. One of the things that we all thought was important when i was a political appointee at the Justice Department is we protected the career officials from politics. Thank you New Hampshire. It wasnt like the white house was ever, you know, pushing us to do inappropriate things. I didnt work in an Administration Like that. But we kept politics away from them completely and that is the thank you New Hampshire. Job of the political officials. If the president is calling the attorney general or tweeting about what the justice let me take this opportunity to department ought to do and that it ought to withdraw its recommendations, its the thank the people of new attorney generals job to stop that. If the attorney general wont, hampshire for a great victory its the u. S. Attorneys job to tonight. Stop that. But they have engineered the Justice Department and you see these career officials left holding the line trying to resist. Its a disgraceful thing to do to them. I think this is going to be a a very big story, the recriminations for this and the and let me thank the thousands effects begin to ripple outwards. Of volunteers in the hampshire. Matt miller, thanks for making some time. Thank you. Much more to come on tonights big night for bernie thank you. Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, and Amy Klobuchar in New Hampshire. Plus the road warriors are who knocked on doors in the rain assembling onset in manchester. And in the snow and the cold. You dont want to miss that. They will join us ahead. Sometimes, the pressures of todays world can make it tough the reason that we won tonight in the hampshire, we won last week in iowa. It is because of the hard work of so many volunteers and let me say tonight that this victory to take care of yourself. Here is the beginning of the end but natures bounty has innovative ways to help you maintain balance for donald trump. And help keep you active and wellrested. Because hey, tomorrows coming up fast. Natures bounty. Because youre better off healthy. With victories behind us, popular vote in iowa and the victory here tonight we are going to nevada. We are going to South Carolina. We are going to win those states as well. Tonight i want to take the opportunity to express my appreciation and respect for all of the Democratic Candidates that we ran against. Pete buttigieg stephen colbert, Elizabeth Warren, joe biden. What i can tell you with absolute certainty, and i know that i speak for every one of the Democratic Candidates is that no matter who wins, and we certainly hope it is going to be us. We are go to unite together. We are going to unite together and defeat the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country. And the reason that i believe we are going to wins that we have an unprecedented Grassroots Movement from coasttocoast of millions of people. The reason that we are going to wins that we are going to put together an unprecedented multigenerational, multiracial political movement. And this is a movement from coasttocoast which is demanding that we finally have an economy and a government that works for all of us, not wealthy campaign contributors. And i want to thank all of those people who have worked and have contributed to our campaign but make the point that in this point in the campaign we are taking on billionaires and we are taking on candidates funded by billionaires. Here in a state that goes by but we are going to win because the motto live free or die, we have the agenda that speaks you made up your own minds. You asserted that famous to the needs of working people throughout this country. Health care is a human right, not a privilege. Independent streak. And thanks to you a campaign that some said shouldnt be here at all has shown that we are the wealthy and powerful will here to stay. [ cheers and applause ] start paying their fair share of taxes. Weve got New Hampshires results tonight with nbc news projecting a narrow bernie we will make public colleges and sanders win over Pete Buttigieg. It sent joe biden and Elizabeth Warren out of the state with no delegates between them, coming universities tuitionfree and in fifth and fourth respectively. Cancel all student debt but the big surprise of the night was Amy Klobuchar who finished third behind both sanders and buttigieg. For more, lynn sweet, the Washington Bureau chief of the unlike donald trump, we know chicago sun times, victoria that Climate Change is very real mcgrane, olivia nuzzi and sahil kapur, who is a new nbc news and a crisis for our planet. National political reporter. We are prepared to tell the here are my big takeaways from the night. Fossil fuel industry their one is sanders is the shortterm profits are not more frontrunner right now. Important than the future of our hes won the most votes in two planet. States. He raised 35 million. Hes got organization in nevada and South Carolina. Right now thats the state of the race. Number two, and id love to get your thoughts on this. Democratic voters are so conflicted right now about who can best beat trump, and theyre so in their own heads about we are going to end a racist and trying to punditize and figure out who its going to be. Broken criminal justice system. Theyre creating the conditions for what everyone dreads, which is a very long we are going to pass comprehensive immigration primary that goes to the reform. Convention. Weve seen how amorphous the issue of electability is. Sometimes they look at a our gun Safety Policies will be candidate and say, i like him. Or the opposite. Determined by the american that seems to be whats happening with joe biden. People, not the nra. And under our administration it its not enthusiasm or will be women, not the support government who control their own its been this idea that he is lives. The safest and strongest candidate to defeat President Trump. It seems like democratic voters are rethinking that. Bernie sanders has a very different theory for how to win than democrats have used since 1992, which is mobilize and activate. There are 100 million voters who now our campaign is not just sat out the 2016 election. His view is he can get many of about beating trump, it is about those voters who feel disenfranchised by politics, transforming this country. Disaffected with both parties, to care and show up. Victoria, let me ask you this about klobuchar. It was fascinating how late it is about having the courage deciding everyone was. To take on wall street, the i feel like that is a New Hampshire thing. Insurance companies, the drug this New Hampshire privilege of companies, the fossil fuel you have to come to me nine times, and i have to pete your whole family and maybe at the industry, the military end of the day ill figure out how to vote for. Exponentially magnified this industrial complex. Tonight i time around. You heard over and over these stories about people who were deciding between Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar, which want to thank the people of new wasnt the progressive and moderate lanes weve been told thats how everything was supposed to break down. Hampshire for this great victory i think it does go to this. And urge all great americans to everybody is just casting about for who is the best person to beat donald trump. Join our effort to transform you know, those exit polls showing just how angry everybody was. This country at berniesanders. Com. The highest ratings of anger in decades. About the state of the country. Right. Not at the candidates. Right. What is motivating people to the polls. Its not hope. Its fear and anger. And i think that means that this race is still so unsettled bernie. Bernie. Regardless of what clarity we bernie. It is on to nevada, it is on may see in tonights results. To South Carolina, it is on to are you surprised by what win the democratic nomination bidens performance has been in the first two contests . Im not surprised by it. And together. The campaign was attempting to set expectations for precisely about where this is. He left this morning. And together i have no doubt right. Not a great look obviously. That we will defeat donald but it tracks with the polling trump. Thank you all very much. That we saw here. And so i think this was if we were paying attention to the polling, a pretty predictable outcome. Its obviously not what they the projected winner of tonights New Hampshire primary. Wanted and i think its called into question how long they can Bernie Sanders has spoken. Keep going before they run out of steam, they run out of money. He has got a specific range but i think, you know, the we are all familiar with. Campaign was preparing for this he is running for a president outcome, but i think deep down for a long time. They didnt really believe that he was a senator for a long it would be this bad. I talked to people inside the time. To see him out there on the campaign. Theyre happy that hes not stage, beaming you know, completely defeated, that he seems like he wants to go obviously this is an important forward. Win. But, you know, its not the he essentially came to a tie outcome they wanted. Its hugely humiliating. Finish with Pete Buttigieg in its also 18 days until south iowa, ahead in the popular vote, carolina. Right. In the number two spot, Pete Buttigieg, lynn sweet. Slightly behind in the delega they had a theory. Delegates. Tonight projected as the winner it was very clear. In New Hampshire. They were very public about this buttigieg right on his heels but theory of how they were going to make this happen, right . A win for sanders as projected by nbc. Say yes to every media head. Him there with his whole do a ton of fundraising. Extended family. Supporters and some famous supporters there just off stage. Senator sanders is where he wants to be. Then use his skill as a retail politician in the state of iowa winning the first two races by a bigger margin, but he is coming to show everyone hes a good politician and let that catapult you out. Out of it 12 with a tie and a number one. The senators campaign is therefore in the cat bird seat. The idea was you show you can perform, those numbers are going buttigieg coming in so close to come out. It seems now is the big test of here in New Hampshire, and we this theory. Will see with the next 10 of his Campaign Guru liz smith the vote in, we will see how that results. Is the one who you all might be buttigieg come to a surprise hearing a lot more about. First place tie finish in iowa is the one for sanders to beat shes the one who basically at this point which nobody could wanted mayor pete to trust her. Say yes, yep, that is her have projected but sanders is driving theory. Clearly on top. As we new york giants say at it is beyond understanding least five times a year, a win why other candidates didnt do it. That was not like a big technical play. Especially if Television People is a win. Want you on, go. Steve, i know you have been and if you go, you get free bringing in more numbers. Media. Yeah. We can take you through a couple yes. I think thats a basic thing. I just want to throw out one of important things as the night more thing. Wraps up. We were showing you sanders was voters, when you go to these leading showing you the long events, its like big focus groups. Shot there. And when you turn up there and the ultimate reason why it was called a big part had to do with see whos there, the ones who had the biggest mix of people this college town, the state are the ones who ended up coming in one, two, three. University, the university of New Hampshire. Different generations, different Bernie Sanders won this double digit margin of 500 over class levels, and different family circumstances. Buttigieg. We expected that to happen. We needed to see it to get it that tells you what the profile called statewide. Is of the candidate who will then the race was called for prevail. When we talk about pete sanders. There are outstanding things on buttigieg and the media, i think the map. We can tell you the big picture, its easy to dismiss it, say, oh, reporters are selfcentered. Why sanders is on top as the they like attention. Night comes to an end. Of course we care about that cities. Type of stuff. He won the seven largest cities in the state of New Hampshire. But when you put in contrast joe biden, Whose Campaign seems to manchester, the biggest one, want to avoid having him speak off the cuff at all costs, its not just about reporters and our concord, dover, rochester, egos and being able to get our scoop and our interview. Keene. Its about can you trust your where were the opportunities for buttigieg to get this close. Own candidate to speak . Thats a very important thing, we talked about that and voters feel that same way when you talk to voters. Theyre nervous about joe biden and what hes going to say. Massachusetts New Hampshire border. Bernie sanders it was true in salem. Wyndham. There are a lot of people in 2016 and largely this campaign, he does a lot of media. Wyndham. Sanders kind of lagged. Some of the suburban areas he and his campaign think the outside Manchester Sanders more people i can talk to, the lagged and it gave buttigieg an better, and im not scared of messing up. Opportunity but not enough Bernie Sanders knew exactly there. What he wanted to say from the overall we always say delegate moment he jumped in. Race. Here is the delegate he said it at every rally. Hes probably the most scripted of all the candidates, but it distribution. Works for him. Guess what in terms of national but not an actual script. Convention delegates, sanders consistent. Thats what the voters like. And buttigieg will walk out with hes been saying it for 30 years. Hes just the same number. Nine for sanders. Nine for buttigieg. Pete buttigiegs strategy that i think is really important is he was ambiguous at first. Six Amy Klobuchar. He spoke in abstractions, that everyone could kind of like and get behind. There was the first he even had a moment where he said now is not the time to get Congressional District and the into policy. He did it in a way the left second Congressional District. Could get behind what he was saying. Each one of these was allocated eight delegates. The margin was so close in all three of these places between then he picked his moment late. Sanders and buttigieg. When you get into the incredibly the moment it was clear there was no space on the left with complicated rounding formulas, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Sanders got three, buttigieg got warren, he saw a moment with joe three and klobuchar got two. Biden as the alternative to him. I want you to hold that in the second congressional thought and i want all of you district it was three, three, guys to stick here with me. Were going to come back to you two. Adding up to nine for bernie in just a bit. Sanders, nine for pete first a special report from the road warriors is coming up next. Buttigieg, six for Amy Klobuchar. Colonial penn can help. In terms of National Convention delegates they are walking out with the same amount. Remember, the debate participation. Dnc says get delegates in here. If that were in doubt at all. The final thing i can tell you, checking to see if we have got any late returns. We have been monitoring turn out all night. Iowa, we talked about it being flat with 2016. We have alarm bells right now. They have already blown past with 90 in higher than the 2016 hi, im jonathan, a manager here at Colonial Penn Life Insurance company. Level. Higher turn out. And with Coverage Options starting at just 9. 95 a month, 90 than 100 in 2016. You can get a whole Life Insurance plan also right now they are on par to help close that gap with their 2008 level. With a benefit check paid directly to your beneficiary. That was obamaclintonedwards. Its cash they can use right away, an epic primary. And generally, its free from federal income tax. There is a possibility when the final 10 this primary will have if youre between age 50 and 85, Coverage Options start higher turnout than the 2008 at just 9. 95 a month. And the rate is locked in, so it can never go up. There are no medical questions. Obamaclintonedwards primary you cannot be turned down for any health reason. Did and that is a switch from iowa. And it comes with two lifetime guarantees. A lot of people are going to be looking at that and thinking one, your coverage can never be cancelled, ahead to the general election and what it says about and two, your rate can never go up. Democratic voter enthusiasm. This is our 1 most popular whole Life Insurance plan. Is there anything that changed in terms of New Hampshire. Take the first step now. Voter registration process, call for free information and youll also get laws, fear of restrictions or this beneficiary planner free just for calling. Otherwise that might explain the use it to record Important Information turn out numbers rather than and helpful direction for your loved ones. Something that we can map so dont wait, call now. Enthusiasm on. One thing that you see in new announcer and when you call right now, youll also get this free prescription savings card hampshire is independents. That can help you save up to 80 on Prescription Drugs very easy and very common for them to vote in either the at over 35,000 pharmacies locally and nationwide. Democratic or republican primary. One thing we saw in the exit poll there was a higher share of the democratic electorate that identified itself as politically independent than in 2016. A difference of five points. One thing you see here, remember, in 2016 there was a competitive republican primary. Trump, kasich and rubio. I think that you saw more independents in New Hampshire going to the democratic primary. Certainly i think that is part of this but if they are above 2008 levels, you know, it is just easier to participate in the primary than to participate in the caucus where you have to spend three hours and maybe defend your preference. It may be easier to show up, cast a ballot and leave. Also as we get the follow on reporting and we have a chance to look at the cross paths coming out of it, it will be easy to see undeclared no Party Affiliation voters who they declared. If democrats see them as potentially among the audience they can bring in to a general election for the right democratic candidate, that will change the way that they campaign. I have the number up here in the exit poll. If you give me five seconds. Among independents, the 46 our nbc News Reporters have identifying themselves at of course been all over the state covering this first in the nation New Hampshire primary independents, first place bernie election. Sanders. Tonight msnbcs katy tur has 29 . Second place Pete Buttigieg. Gathered those road warriors in manchester, New Hampshire. 24 . Third place Amy Klobuchar, 18 . Four years ago we did this. I was sitting on this side. Again, those are folks that call now im in the Brian Williams chair, which is im sorry to say themselves independents. It, guys. Tracking pretty closely with its me, not Brian Williams. No pressure. What we are looking at in terms we wanted to talk about what of what is starting to look like things were like on the road in a way we dont get to talk about on regular broadcasts. The final result. Amy klobuchar a little lower and i just want to know what are Bernie Sanders a little higher these candidates like in person . What is Elizabeth Warren really with independents and pete like . Buttigieg exactly where he is at i find her to be generally warm. With 90 in. She answers a lot of the no offense iowa, but it is questions that you ask her and truly like shes not messing kind of cool to see who people around when she says she loves to talk about policy. Voted for. If you ask her a policy we are not only going to hear question, be prepared for her to from the family members at the go into the policy weeds on it. Its not fake. Table busting to get in on this, she actually really likes this we are going to look ahead to stuff. When she gets up on stage and the next contest. We are in the news business. We do that all the time. Shes like, nerds, thats real. Is Bernie Sanders as much as a curmudgeon as he comes off . Hes a little bit funnier than you would think. So many times when you see senator sanders, youre seeing those very short clips. But he is one if you ask a question, if its anything longer than two sentences long, he would jump in with a joke and get you all frazzled, and then youd have to start it all over again. So youd miss the point of the exact question youre asking. He is one who likes to joke around but hes very serious about certain things. If you ask him about himself, hes not going to answer that. He likes shaquille. Youre like the only person in the country other than his wife that he likes. I still didnt get a happy birthday. He said he wasnt going to tell you happy birthday. He warned you. What is Pete Buttigieg like . Test test test test a year ago if you had asked me who would be the nominee at test this point, i would have thought it was like an emotional leader, somebody like a beto or kamala harris. Amazon prime video is on xfinity x1. Leading the march down fifth avenue. I thought i knew things, you know. But then, look, god bless Pete Buttigieg, but he kind of talks at the level of Mister Rogers and with that composure and poise and he just did it up here on the stage in New Hampshire. I saw him stumble just like for a beat in his speech tonight, and i thought ive never seen that. Ive never seen him pause in any sort of awkward way and he did that tonight. Hes always so on. And if you go back and read his speech, its like he typed it out. He has the comma and everything perfectly because he speaks in perfect sentences. Its impressive. Hes an amazing human being. Conversationally, id like to get to that point where we get to know Pete Buttigieg a little more. I was talking to his advisers. They said this is who he is. What you see onstage is Pete Buttigieg. Theres nothing more. Speechless. Vaughn hillyard is never speechless. In a long campaign, dont you have to show that part of yourself eventually. How long can you be the tv character version of yourself . So when you say words like, i dont mean that in a show me best of prime video derogatory way. Into this, youll see awesome stuff like this. People are looking at him, oftentimes you hear especially these older voters who hes discover prime originals like, doing well with, is their son or the Emmy Award Winning the marvelous mrs. Maisel, the person they want their son or daughter to be friends with or date. Tom clancys jack ryan, and the man in the high castle. I think that is the part that all in the same place as your live tv. Makes him so compelling to these people is he is that guy that its all included with your amazon prime membership. Everybody wanted their young people arent so thats how xfinity makes tv. Excited about him. Young people are excited about the old guy in the race. Simple. Easy. Awesome. Im feeing good right now the part about Pete Buttigieg, though, is i think its that composure. Hes the first, i think, serious candidate who is a veteran of the iraq afghanistan wars, and i think theres also a moment of reckoning for young voters coming to grips with having lived through these wars themselves to see somebody suddenly be that nominee. But also taking such a mature approach to i guess running for president. When you talk to young people at the sanders events and ask, hey, this is a 78yearold man. What do you see in him that you dont see in yourself . They say its the authenticity. Theyll go back to, oh, in the 60s, he locked arms with black women and he got arrested. They know his record. They know his consistency. Thats what really appeals to them about him. And thats, you know, when you look at the polling, you look at the exit polls weve been seeing and why hes doing so well with young people, its that connection they feel on a just raw basis. What we see is what we get. That goes in personality and also in policy. Garrett, you know Amy Klobuchar because you cover capitol hill. Take a little bit of a vacation. Relaxing. Whats Amy Klobuchar like . Its been weird. When i covered her before i went back for impeachment and coming 11 27 eastern time. Back out, shes got a lot better at this. There is the current layout, 90 i think shes more comfortable, and we have projected bernie more natural than i used to see when she was on the Campaign Sanders as the winner in new trail. Shes always been kind of funny, hampshire. We reached the shank of the sort of cutting, awkward. Evening, the point of the show she would make jokes at her own expense a lot. Where we say some of the stuff selfdeprecating. On television we say during the break. I have been waiting all year for him to say shank of the shes gotten natural on the stage. Evening. I need a travel agency so with confidence. I dont know how much of that is this moment she felt like she was having in New Hampshire. You could see somebody who you badly. Could tell was just always sort of the awkward, not necessarily like a class clown, but somebody who would make those cutting remarks and be kind of snarky on i need a break. The side. At the shank of the evening, coy picture her in high school being that way and trying to usually magical things happen. Translate in a way that works for a president ial candidate, that works to be more uplifting yes. With the crowd. I think people connected with listen, what happened in 2016 is that Bernie Sanders came in in a tie in iowa and right after iowa in 2016 he won New Hampshire. We are seeing both of the things happen again in 2020. Obviously it looks like senator sanders victory in New Hampshire will be much narrower but he was really only running against Hillary Clinton in 2020. Against a split field it will not be as big of proportion. The theory of the case of the Bernie Sanders campaign is that they could have beaten donald trump because they would have done better in urban centers where Hillary Clinton failed in new york and philadelphia and they would have brought out new voters, young voters of color. They did well as we just heard from steve with the urban voters and buttigieg did well with the suburban voters. That helps them. The question that i have about sanders, and it is apples to oranges, can he grow his coalition. They are with him and strong with him. There is nothing that he can do to lose not a single one. Well, he lost a single one. My daughter was a supporter and now warren. He wont lose his base but can he grow it large enough to win the presidency. How could they prove it . So far they competed in two states and won them both. How do you prove it. What they will have to do is to be able to go in a state like South Carolina and win africanamerican voters under 30. Black and brown voters under 30 are with Bernie Sanders. They prefer him. Can he win the ladies in the church hats, the voters that are in the church vans to go to vote. Those are biden voters right now. Those are voters that are open even to bloomberg right now. Can he expand upward in age and into the suburbs because he is going to need the Hillary Clinton base too. When you think about buttigieg, klobuchar, warren heading in had to South Carolina, setting aside biden and what you know about his existing support. Bloomberg is not going to be on the ballot in South Carolina. Buttigieg, klobuchar, warren, does any of them have more of a chance than sanders does . I have been texting with South Carolina friends that have been on National Campaigns and that do this for a living. What they have said is that neither of the three have the infrastructure on the ground because it takes more than commercials. Buttigieg is running ads because he has got a lot of money. He buys his way on to the air. He tries to buy over africanamerican votes that way. They are not seeing a lot of the infrastructure that it takes to win. You can see where he is tonight. That is his fire wall. I think that for biden, it is not over for him because of how poorly he did tonight. It feels like it is over and feels like the end, but he has two more states with strong Union Support for him. You know, we talked to firefighters in New Hampshire, ride or die for biden and older africanamerican voters that are for him right now. If he collapses, i do not see that support naturally go to klobuchar or buttigieg. It appears it is going, strangely enough, to bloomberg. The union point is about to be very, very big. Huge. The church ladies, black women, to see how black women vote in nevada and South Carolina and particularly South Carolina especially because of what you said. If joe biden collapses, i dont know that Michael Bloomberg is a lock. Lets see what he looks like in a church hat. You and me both. Photoshop. That is one group. A few other demographics i am interested to see how they react. One is young adults. Young people, since the shooting in parkland, florida have become a different Political Animal that has been fascinating to watch. And i think that young people right now are in the valley of decision in a way. Do they want a candidate that can bring the whole country together or a candidate like Bernie Sanders who is like we are going to just change the country. I talked to a lot of people across the country and there is a real diversity opinion whether conservative young people or liberals or moderates. There is a split. But the young people i have spoken to almost to a person are highly, highly pragmatic. They want to get stuff done. If it takes just democrats. If democrats and republicans can work together. If we have to out vote all of the republicans or democrats, they just want to see things get done. The water is rising. The earth is heating. We dont have time for all of this political argument. And the obamatrump voters. The people that went trump in 2016 and now are trying to decide if they are better off than they were four years ago. When we were in the detroit area, i met a guy in michigan, ever since trump got elected his roofing business has gone through the roof. He has more business than he can handle. I said has donald trump been good for your business. He said business is incredible. Things are great. There are jobs all over. I asked would you do business with donald trump. He said i would get half the money up front first. I am interested to see how voters like brian who were ernest saying i wish someone would tie his thumbs to his side but look at my business are going to weigh those two options. I think that Amy Klobuchar tonight, if you have never seen her before, something is really appealing about her. There is nothing as strong as true gentleness and nothing as gentle as strength. I think that is wha see how thas with black women, young people and obamatrump voters to see if i want four more years of what i got or is there someone i think can change the country in a better way. Lawrence odonnell. Let me go back to my beat tonight, november in New Hampshire. Another important number for New Hampshire. There are now 20,000 fewer registered Republican Voters in New Hampshire than there were four years ago. That is what Donald Trumps inspiration has meant to the Republican Party in New Hampshire. Bill weld was approaching 12,000 votes in New Hampshire tonight. Challenging donald trump on the republican side. I make the point every one of the 12,000 voters knew that bill weld had no chance. They decided it is important enough to make that trip to cast that vote and make that statement about this president of the united states. It turns out mitt romney was speaking for real Republican Voters up there when he cast the vote in the senate. It looks really bad for donald trump in New Hampshire. Lets go to the sanders possibility. Four years ago all of the polling, oneonone indicated that Bernie Sanders did better against donald trump than Hillary Clinton. In june 2016, Hillary Clinton was oneonone against donald trump. 45 to 41. That was the standard margin. It was pretty accurate. That is roughly where it came out in the end. Bernie sanders was nine points ahead of donald trump. Bernie sanders is eight points ahead of donald trump in the oneonone polls and always polled well against donald trump. There is a big overlap on policy saying identical things about nafta four years ago, the world trade agreements, china trade. And then in the end 12 of bernie voters voted for donald trump. That is the good and the bad news. If bernie were on the ticket would those 12 stay with bernie. 12 went to donald trump. That could mean that bernie has a unique appeal to a segment which could be a decisive segment of trump voters. Chris matthews, you are a long time newspaper columnist. What would your first lead be tonight . My god, that is what gets me in trouble when i am asked my real personal opinions about things. Can i do it this way, just as a journalist. I want to pull back from my gut. There is a big question out there and i dont know the answer. Historically the Democratic Party hasnt been an angry party but a party of basic needs, social security, medicare, selffunded by the way. Roosevelts idea wasnt the rich would pay for everything but you would pay for it itself. Working people would pay for retirees. Very much a selffunded notion. Even medicaid which is for more people below the poverty level. It is used to take care of alzheimers disease. As long as you protect those programs for most people, the basic safety net. If you stick with that and you dont mess with it and as their parents get older, they want to see the grand kids and their kids. They want to drive home and not take an airplane home. That is all they want. They are not against the rich. They dont know how any of these wealthy people live. They dont have the envy the British Labor party is based on. They are not like that. They may have changed. They may feel like they are getting screwed. They hear the talk of the unfairness of the society, the rigged nature of the society. That may get to them. I am skeptical but it might get to them. If they are regular centerleft democrats who just want to be secure in their own economy and see their kids once in a while. If that is the case trump will be tough to beat. So i dont know. In either case it is really tough to beat trump. I dont know if the Democratic Party has shifted as far to the left as bernie believes it will. Are we happy to see or is anybody happy to see a very polarized election coming up and thinks their side is going to win. I am skeptical of just the left beating just the trump. I am not sure he is conservative. Twhae whatever he is on the right. I am not sure he can do that. If he cant why is the Democratic Party doing that. And they cant outsource the nomination to mike bloomberg. That is outsourcing. Getting a designated driver. Getting someone to get you home but not one of your own. This will be tricky. A democratic socialist or a republican to be the designated driver. It is unusual. I am a bit frustrated and i am not the answer to all questions brian and rachel, i am just not tonight. I am a little frustrated. It was a victory. A win is a win as you say for the new york football giants, yes, but it wasnt a victory of a guy that got 60 last time. Buttigieg and klobuchar together tonight, the last time there was a primary in New Hampshire this close was 1996 on the republican side and the winner was, excuse me hold your breath everybody, pat buchanan. He won with 27 . That meant nothing. He was a right winger. Bob dole won. Chris matthews, thank you as an old news director of mine just said you just have written your piece right there. That is what i try to do. When we come back we are going to preview South Carolina, nevada and more. Review south ca, nevada and more. Ive been pretty stable with my schizophrenia for a while, and then my kids asked me why my body was rocking back and forth. You have been perhaps listening to our reporting and analysis. Please tell our National Audience what changes for the candidates walking into your state. Of course as we have talked many times, brian, nevada has a much more diverse electorate and more reflective of america than iowa and New Hampshire which are 90 white. Not that we are just the weird, wild west of nevada. It is a different pitch needs to be made. Now, because of what happened in the first two states you have joe biden and Elizabeth Warren essentially fighting for their lives here against the Bernie Sanders machine andhe it reallys a machine. And mayor pete machine that has been quietly waiting for momentum to make a move here. You have a Development Just tonight,ev brian, that my reporr of the independent just broke that the Culinary Union, 800pound gorilla of democratic politicals is now putting up flyers intt the hotels and communicatingte directly with members showing that Bernie Sanders wouldg end, end their health care. It is a direct assault on Bernie Sanders. You knew there would be an attempt, a stop Bernie Movement and this is a sign of it. Rachel mi am so happy to see face. You have taught me most of what i know about nevada. Looking at that culinary workers flyer, it is not a dont go out and vote for Bernie Sanders. Ite is not a direct hit on him. There still hasnt been an endorsement nor has the union decided if they are going to endorse. To to throw this shade on sanders when they are saying supportive things about other candidates, is the subtle team with the message is being delivered by the Union Something that will resonate on w caucus day . It is a great question, rachel. Anybody who has covered Union Endorsements over the years, you know, the real question does the rankn in file follow what the leadership is saying. Now they are racheting up, the Culinary Union, they first put out a flyer that did not vladislav namestniknam name names. This one i directed at bernie, in my opinion. It m does not say dont vote fo him. There arevo two questions. One is the one that i just mentioned. Will the rank in file respond and will the Culinary Union culo endorse. I think he probably has some support. How much, i dont know. The real question is how far does the Culinary Union go. Will they endorse. They didnt in 2016. I think they ended up helping through the u efforts of harry reids talking to their leadersp and helping Hillary Clinton who barelyin staved off the challen from Bernie Sanders. I think it is only 5050 they endorse and would they try to saved bien who was doing well in the d polls here but now with 9 in New Hampshire and in a lot of trouble they are not going to try to resurrect a corpse. Do they latch on to mayor pete. If you t look at the flyer he i not attacked at all for not sayingfo Culinary Health care i medicare for all that want it. It is very unclear what they are going to do and the rank in file will do. Meg, reporter for the ap in South Carolina. When we look down the road at nevada and South Carolina heading towards super tuesday there is so much national pundit speculation onpu whether or not the first two races will affect the pragmatic judgment of South Carolina democrats when they go to thena polls in the palmetto state. What are you thinking in terms of how the various candidates are stacking up . Everything that i hear from voters, and i talked to a lot of them including some tonight at an eventlu with the vice h president , they dont care. They areid seeing the results coming in in iowa and watching in New Hampshire. They are interested. They saw aew lot of the candidas up close and personal. Nd they maintain that South Carolinaai will do whatever sou carolina is going to do. They feelto like they have had opportunity to consider a lot of the information in their own rightfo and it is something to said for momentum and a lot of the attention that the winners of the early contests get, iowa is ardifferent. We didnt have the definitive bounce we see a lot of the times coming t out of the caucuses. But overall voters here are telling me theyte are ready to have their voice known and it is not v going to be anything we he seen in the three states that go before. Eshi, meg, this is joy reed msnbc. Ic. Have been texting back and forth with people trying to see whotr is well organized structurally in South Carolina to bed able to do well in a ste that has a very traditional turn out machine structure. Which of the candidates that we saw c competing tonight are wel organizede down there . There is no question that the Biden Campaign has been here for aas long time. They have gotten some of the most notable and well known folks a in South Carolina worki on their campaign, and they have been organizing. The Warren Campaign has a large ground game and the Sanders Campaign has been doing the same. He maintained somewhat of a presence hereme since 2016 and senator sanders didnt have to go through the introductory phases others have done. O one i want to talk about here in South Carolina that has been doing the organizing for months is that of tom steyer. He had ads going back for a long time, need to impeach and going back to his kbcampaign. In South Carolina he is invested heavily. He has a ground game and a lot of staff working for him and has endorsements from state lawmakers. One thing that i noticed is that they are interested in getting to know himer and he is focusin on getting a lot of attention in the black community. Weac talked about the importanc of the black vote. It is not monolithic, but there are a, lot of africanamerican votersfr here and tom steyer ha been trying to appeal to them terms of plans he has rolled out for criminal justicero initiatives. One thing i am hearing from people is that it is quite possible they could see someone like tom steyer eating away at a bit ofy support we have traditionally thought that it was inna joe bidens corner. Some of the africanamerican voters have known him for a long time and are familiar with him and senator sanders as well since hesa is well known here o attracting some of that support. Since we know that joe biden is counting j heavily on a good showing andod good turnout for r primary, those are f factors th i believe people will be considering when they think about his performance inhe the upcoming primary. Letco me put that to john in nevada. I dont want to overstate the tom steyer effect. Looks like he is at about 3. 5 having spent a kings ransom on ads in New Hampshire but he had a lot h of competition for the r time. Inon nevada he has been dominan in terms of who is buying the most ads outspending sanders by over 12 million. Do you12 see anything in terms organization to match the amount of money that steyer is spending in nevada . Yeah. There is not as much organization on the ground. There is o some. But he is filling up peoples mailboxes. He iseo on tv. You hear these anecdotal storied of parents sitting in their living room and the 4yearold points at the tv and says thats tom steyer. He is on all of the time. That is how often he is on tv here. Tv he has made some move in the polls. He is about to, wait for this, he is about to start a bus tour across nevada this weekend with events. Inen many cities and towns in nevada. He is i trying to buy his way io South Carolina. The same thing here. Trying to buy his way into viability. It is hardwa toto believe that will be able to make it into the top two and probably not even the top three. He sure is spending a lot of money. Lo as the old song goes we will bed seeing you both in all of e old familiar places. John in nevada, meg in South Carolina.
