Lockdown. Now the crisis here in new york city. We had seen this in other countries. This is queens, new york. Covid19 wasnt just another cold. The worst Global Crisis since world war ii. The u. S. Acted but only after waiting. They all have covid. We knew it was coming. Its too little too late. The world has never seen anything like this. There will be a lot of death, unfortunately. Its only a matter of time before it hits your community. This isnt going to get any better. America is not prepared. Even as some places see signs of hope, the question remains. Will life ever be the same again . This is what one of the most vibrant nations in the world looks like in 2020. Italy was the First Western country hollowed out by the coronavirus. A clear warning of what a pandemic could do to an open, democratic society. And to a people who love life, love to socialize, and love their cities. With no vaccine, italy faced the outbreak the only way it knew how. It delved into its history. Becoming the first country in the world to put its entire population in quarantine. A medieval practice first introduced to battle the plague. The word, quarantine, comes from italian, for 40. For 40 days of isolation. At the start of this year, no one here had heard of the coronavirus. Now they hear of little else. At 6 00 each evening the Italian Government announces the latest numbers of infections and deaths. The news is almost never good. To divert their eyes and maybe to save their souls, when the 6 00 p. M. Bulletins come, many italians respond with defiance and solidarity. Expressing an almost primal need for hope in the face of news that no one wants to hear but that no one can afford to fully ignore. It is a sad moment because you knew in advance that it most likely is not going to be good news, going to be really bad news. Mattia is an Italian Journalist based in rome. It was a moment that people dread. Moment people try to avoid, they think. Psychologically, it is a lot of pressure on that moment of the day. The covid19 pandemic that began in china and swept through asia took several weeks to fully impact europe. It meant italy had some time to prepare. But like most nations, italy didnt appreciate the full scale of what it was about to face. Unfortunately, italians like me, myself included, we started to take it seriously when we were forced to do so. When the lockdown came as a decree from the government. Sporting events were canceled. Schools and universities shut. And italys famous cafe culture disappeared from the sidewalks. But italys attempts to stop covid19 came too late. The first recorded case was on january 31st when 2 Chinese Tourists from wuhan became ill. Almost three weeks later, two clusters emerged in lombardy and the numbers just blew up after that with hundreds dying every day. 51 days after reporting its first case, italy replaced china as the global epicenter of the covid19 pandemic. One thing was unmissable as the world watched italy suffer. Even one of the best resourced Health Care Systems in the world simply couldnt cope once covid19 took hold. Nobody thought theyd be treating so many people so quickly. Beginning has been tough just because we receive a number of patient which was absolutely unbelievable at the same time, so, for example, i spent four, five, days without going home. This is the end of the day. After 12 hours of continuous duty. Theres a lot of patients here. Dr. Enrico is a hospital intensive care director in lombardy. We have a huge number of patients with severe respiratory distress and we receive a sort of tsunami of patients submerging us. We are living in a mass casualty scenario and the mass casualty scenario means that theres a huge disproportion between resources and number of patient to be treated. The virus hit the city of bergamo with such speed and on such a wide scale the cemetery quickly reached capacity. Churches filled with coffins. The army was called in to move the dead to neighboring towns. In a few short weeks, italy was utterly transformed. Just this past week the italian authorities have declared a nationwide lockdown. In milan american student anna engle suddenly found herself caught up in the lockdown. I am here in lombardy which has been known to be the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the last two months. I want to sent a message to the u. S. To please take this as seriously as possible. If we would have responded sooner, italy would have been in a totally different situation. Anna wasnt alone in trying to sound the alarm. Mattia who lived and worked in new york feared other countries would soon be suffering just like italy. On march 13th he wrote a column in the boston globe urging other countries to learn what would be called the italian lesson. We wasted time, we wasted few precious weeks in which we could have explained and understand better the importance of social distancing, the importance of staying home. Many countries did follow italys lead. In london after initially resisting a lockdown, Prime Minister Boris Johnson closed pubs and restaurants and advised citizens to stay at home. The government has a lockdown in force. You must stay home. France and spain did much the same. Even india with its population of 1. 3 billion decided on a lockdown. Everywhere, covid19 was imposing a new reality. Im in my house all alone. I cant go to my grandchildren. I cant see my children. Hi, my names brooke. I live in sydney, australia. Ive been inside now for going on three weeks. Its a bit weird being out here because it feels like nothing else is happening in the world until you log online and you see all the crazy news thats happening. This is wednesday today . Am i starting to forget the days of the week . Im in my house all alone for the remainder of this period. And that all of a sudden hit me. But not all countries took the italian lesson to heart. Well into the crisis, mexicos president continued to meet and greet supporters. In belarus the president said the people could be protected by therapeutic saunas and drinking vodka. And they werent the only ones in the early days who seem to think the virus would come and go without much harm. Its going to disappear. One day. Its like a miracle. It will disappear. And from our shores, you know, it could get worse before it gets better. But maybe go away. Well see what happens. Nobody really knows. The world was in shock. Just weeks earlier the coronavirus was someone elses problem. Now it was americas, too. Breaking news tonight. The alarming headline of a mystery virus outbreak. The cdc confirming the first case in the u. S. What started on the west coast metastasized with hotspots breaking out all over the country. New york city was hit hard. We were looking at a Freight Train coming across the country. Were now looking at a bullet train. I want america to understand, this week its going to get bad. President trump seemed to be in denial. Its one person coming in from china. And we have it under control. Its going to be just fine. Looks likely april, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. First people in the country with it. Its, like, around 12. Many are getting better. Some are fully recovered already. A little like the regular flu that we have flu shots for and essentially have a flu shot for this within a fairly quick manner. Within a couple days its going to be down to close to zero. On march 17th, the president changed his tune. This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic. It was deadly serious. A hospital ship steamed up the hudson river and makeshift field hospitals were set up in central park. Funeral homes couldnt cope with the number of dead. Meanwhile, the virus that scientists believe originated in bats in china then jumped to humans had crossed another barrier and found a new victim. The global economy. Gold being down. Rates going up. Stocks getting drilled. The lowest point for the dow since june 2017. The dow just suffered its worst drop overnight. A lot of volatility out there. This is worst than 9 11. Among the retailers across the country, layoffs mount. There were immediately comparisons with the 2008 recession when banks collapsed. Other economists reached further back to the 1997 Asian Financial crisis. Or the oil crisis of the 1970s sparked by an arab embargo during a war with israel. Or the big one. Discouragement, fear, depression, haunted america. The Great Depression of the 1930s that ultimately led to economic deprivation and out of it fascism and world war. If this runs for much longer, then youre going to get all those consequences, reverberations, that we got from the great crash. Selwyn parker is a historian who specializes in the crash of 1929. Do you see parallels to the Great Depression . Yes, its the contagion thing. The way that a contagion whatever its caused has always found the vulnerabilities. The 21st century economy is like a supercomputer. Its infinitely complex, interconnected, and magically fast when it works but one errant bit of code, one tiny virus, can bring the whole thing to a halt. How bad is this for the economy . What do you think the real economic costs of this pandemic are and are going to be . In a word, enormous. Nobelprizewinning Economist Joseph Stiglitz is like most people in lockdown but from his manhattan apartment, he sees the impact of covid19 very clearly. The Unemployment Rate almost surely will soar well in excess of 20 . Numbers we havent seen since the Great Depression. Also Balance Sheets will have been destroyed. There was a word about a lot of Companies Going bankrupt and, of course, once youre bankrupt you dont quickly go unbankrupt when the economy recovers. President trump who often tied himself to the stock indexes tried to reassure the markets. Set to hit 20,000 on the dow, a number nobody ever came close to. Though its down 10 , 11 , its still the highest its ever been by far. It certainly might have an impact. But the more he spoke, the more he contradicted himself and the more the markets tanked. President trumps approach seems to be, well, kind of all over the place. I think he is viewed by most responsible people as just out to lunch. He doesnt know whats going on. No one takes him seriously. Most states did impose lockdowns. But that comes with a cost that could kill the retail, leisure, and hospitality sectors. Industries that account for 20 of the american workforce. Were already living paycheck to paycheck. Already behind in bills. Our Profit Center has dropped by 92 . Unemployment would not cover our mortgage payment. It would be terrible if i lost this job. I dont i dont know. I dont know how long we can withstand this. Its a bit like chemotherapy, i suppose. Its pretty horrible for the start but it works in the long run. If this thing isnt shut down quickly, youre going to get massive economic consequences as well as Massive Health consequences. We could be the authors of our own economic destruction. This was a medical problem. We are not going to let it turn into a longlasting financial problem. If it were up to the doctors, theyd say lets keep it shut down, lets shut down the entire world. We cant have the cure be worse than the problem. So whats to be done . The u. S. Has just reported the most staggering rise in weekly jobless claims. On a scale of increase that im not aware has ever happened before. We have definitely seen a huge collapse in the Economic Activity very quickly. Jim oneill was chief economist for goldman sachs. Hes now a member of the british house of lords. So are you talking about a global dip of about 20 gdp . I think we have a global dip of something in the vicinity of at least 10 baked in the cake. What is completely unknown is how long its going to go on for. And that is the course and the presumption that we can get this thing under control relatively soon. Congress did act quickly passing a 2 trillion financial bailout. The biggest in u. S. History. A very important day. I signed the single biggest Economic Relief package in american history. This funding will enable us to recover. What worries me, having this, in three, four months time in the meantime, governments, Central Banks cant keep on printing money and governments cant keep on spending it. Eventually, you have to balance the books. But the fundamental question remains. How could a virus do so much damage so quickly . We tend to think of our economy as relatively strong globally, but in a few weeks, a virus brought the world to a standstill. I think this exposes a lack of resilience. You know, many Auto Companies were selling cars without spare tires. They said, you dont use a spare tire very often so why have a spare tire . But, of course, the reason you have a spare tire is when you have a flat tire, a spare tire makes a very big difference. Americans are discovering that the cost of not having a spare tire, not being prepared for such a pandemic, could be devastating. And brings our entire way of life into question. Youre part of the inside crowd when it comes to capitalism. But youre saying, this has exposed some real systemic problems with the free market system. Ive become a passionate believer that this sort of movements of what i call responsible capitalism or profit with purpose is the way of the future. Profit obviously is an important part of conducting business, but it cant be the sole purpose. The cost in dollars and lives will be felt for years to come. What we dont know is whether the pandemic will change us permanently. In a way this is our alien invasion. This virus is essentially malware attracting the source code of humanity. My agerelated Macular Degeneration could lead to vision loss. So today i made a plan with my doctor, which includes preservision. Because he said a multi vitamin alone may not be enough. As the virus footprint spread across the globe and governments ordered their citizens inside in no time at all, people had to adjust to a new antisocial way of life. You know this city better than anyone i know, by far. What do you think about what youre seeing now . Its devastating. Its heartbreaking. I mean, generally, this is full up. Everywhere you look, theres people. In my lifetime, never, ever seen it like this. I met an old friend of mine, pete mulcahy. A black tab taxi driver, london tour guide and former pro boxer. Like many of others, hes now facing an uncertain future. When was the last time you picked up a fare . Two weeks ago. The last time i drove the cab as a cab driver was two weeks ago. How long can you keep going if it stays like this . If it stays like this, three months. Most people have got nothing. Of that three months, four months, then i have to start digging into money ive put away for my long term, but you the long term is you dont want to think about. Thinking about the long term is precisely what professor amy webb spends her time doing and she says a shift in everyday patterns could be the biggest challenge. I think we have to be willing to confront our cherished beliefs right now and to be willing to imagine alternative futures. Ones that may not mesh with what weve seen in the past. And that impacts everything. That impacts transportation. That impacts school. That impacts our economy. That impacts investments. That impacts everything. Everybody. All of us. Because lets not forget, you know, you may not die from this, but your way of life might be dead Going Forward. This is soho in the center of london. Ever since the swinging 60s, this district was londons noisy beating heart. But just listen now. The only sound, your own footsteps. And the man who reluctantly hushed britains streets to fight the coronavirus has now become one of its victims. Uk Prime Minister Boris Johnson carried on working a full schedule after being diagnosed with the virus. First of all, in my own case, although im feeling better and ive done my seven days of isolation, alas, i still have one of the symptoms, minor symptom, working clearly for the whole time on our program to defeat the virus. But after his condition worsened, he was moved to an icu. Now making a recovery he serves as a reminder of just how vulnerable we all are to covid19. Theres now a significant portion of the World Population living at home. Is this what you expected . Always been unprecedented. Certainly early on, a lot of signs were very troubling with this virus. To have this combination of something that can spread between people and have a severe impact is something that we were always really putting at the top of our list. Adam is an epidemiologist. He uses mathematical models to track and prepare for Infectious Disease outbreaks. Thats why were not in a situation where we can just sit back and let this spread. It seemed at the moment a lot of countries having this lockdown is the only way we can prevent our Health System from being just totally flatout on this. The reasoning goes like this. On average, an infected person passes the coronavirus on to two or three others. And the cases grow exponentially. So that if one infected person doesnt stay home, over a thousand people will have the virus within six weeks. But if that person stays quarantined, the number falls to just over 100. So were going to need to get average contact in population down potentially by about 70 to have a hope of reducing is this going to be with us Going Forward . I think this is going to have an impact on our behavior for potentially the next year or two. Hopefully not at the level it currently is in terms of reducing interactions, but i think certainly until we have a vaccine or some other effective way of controlling this. We are going to have to really change how we interact to reduce infection. Already, a new behavior has become Second Nature for billions. Social distancing, keeping six feet apart from others, to help stem the spread of the virus. In a matter of weeks, covid19 had fundamentally changed the way people interact with each other. And most people have been willing to play their part. Although some countries have taken the measures and messaging to the extreme. In rome mattia is breaking his lockdown for his hour of daily exercise. All part of the rules of the new normal. And he says he can see an upside. It is a strange feeling, but in some in some certain way makes me proud whenever i have a glimpse of an empty street, gives me a little bit of hope because its a sign where were, like, really understanding that the best way to show solidarity and love is until were not touching or seeing each other. Italy still has a very family culture. People know their grandparents. Live close to their grandparents. Eat meals together. Has that helped . I think so. In my case, for sure. Im getting together more with my family now that i ever did and so i think it is also an opportunity to rediscover that. Social distancing has forced us to rethink how we work. And how we play. In historic first, the Olympic Games have been postponed in peacetime. The ideal of the games to bring nations together suddenly not matching the new spirit of the age. We are fighting multiple issues here. Theres the virus. Theres the health care sector. Theres the economy, of course. You know, not to mention things like what does it mean if we have kids out of school for an extended period of time . What does that do to their Cognitive Development . What does this mean for the birth rate . You know, does it go up or down . We dont know yet. And how does that impact the workforce . Daily life, the way we know it, is on hold. Some airlines actually now are starting to lay off employees. Nba, mlb, nhl, and mls, are now all set to go quiet. The coronavirus has forced us all to adjust almost overnight to a world turned upside down. Well, almost all of us. In parks, at markets, and on the court, reckless defiance in the face of a deadly new threat. All but guaranteeing an extended era of social distancing. What has this stress revealed about america . In a way this is our alien invasion. This virus is essentially malware attacking the source code of humanity. This should be something that brings us all together. Its strange to me that its not. This is the time, this is the cause, this is the reason, to get Silicon Valley and wall street and washington, d. C. , working in lockstep together. But thats going to take leadership. Courageous leadership. And unfortunately, we are not seeing collaboration coming out of washington, d. C. Covid19 isnt the first pandemic and it wont be the last. For those working to fight it, its already changed everything. Im tired. Im stressed. Im scared. Im an icu doctor and i dont really scare that easily. Its a medical war zone were unprepared for. Running out of rooms and vents and ppes. Were caring for the sickest population of corona patients and preparing for the numbers to continue to grow. Ive never felt so deeply sad and distraught because so many patients die without having someone by their side. I walk out to the ambulance bay and i cry. And their hard work isnt going unnoticed. Amid the trauma and suffering from covid19, there have been some moments of humanity at its best. The kind of spontaneous demonstrations we saw in italy. Mirrored around the world. People giving Health Workers on the front lines the kind of support usually reserved for troops returning from war. Intense pressure, it seems, can either crush what it touches or sometimes make diamonds. So, today is march 17th. I dont know how many days weve been in quarantine. Ive been making friends with the people closest to us. With our neighbors. Hello. With two months left in her Exchange Program in milan, like everyone else these days, anna from buffalo, new york, is adjusting to life through a laptop. Are you wearing the face masks i gave you in february . Yes, i am wearing my face mask. Continents apart, anna and her family now sharing the common language of the coronavirus. Weve hit our plateau, like, right now so hopefully this will prevent any rebound. My two options are the two epicenters or milan was the epicenter of the world and now its placed in new york and the u. S. We do miss you. Its your birthday coming up. I miss sharing a room with you. I miss it, too. Yeah. One of the most interesting features about pandemic disease is that is manages to reflect our whole essence as human beings. Frank snowden is a history professor at yale specializing in pandemics through the ages. Theres absolutely no aspect of us as humans that is not touched. Amazing grace while at times bringing out the best in us. Its one the virus has also brought out the worst. Ive just come out of the supermarket. Im a Critical Care nurse. Ive just finished 14 hours of work. I just wanted to get some stuff for the next 48 hours. And those people people were just stripping the shelves of basic foods. A lot of people are really feeling the panic now. You go to the supermarkets and there are, you know, canned goods are all gone. On behalf of american truckers, slow down, people. Just get enough for a few days for your family. You dont have to load up on all of this stuff. Youre making our jobs harder. Things are pretty desperate. You know, the hospital, were trying to save lives. Were all just doing what we can to save peoples loved ones. And i want i want you to see me like this because i want people to realize how serious it is. You need to stay indoors and you need to stop spreading it and people need to stop catching it. Panic in the face of a pandemic is nothing new. In the 14th century, people fled from their homes to escape the black death, only spreading the deadly plague as they went. In just four years, half of europes population died. What do pandemics bring out in humans historically . In a sense it brings out either or simultaneously our dark and our better sides and some of the aspects of negativity that come out frequently in the history of pandemic disease have to do with scapegoating. Jewish people were burned during the passage of the black death. It was also a time of great xenophobia. Do you think thats happening now when President Trump says this is the chinese virus . I think that is precisely what is happening. The World Health Organization issued clear guidance early on in order to prevent social stigma against an entire population. It specifically says not to attach locations or ethnicity to this or any disease. Not everyone got the message. I would like to begin by announcing some important developments in our war against the chinese virus. Why do you keep calling this the chinese virus . There are reports of dozens of incidents of bias against chineseamericans in this country. Why do you keep using this . Because it comes from china. A lot say its racist. Its not racist at all. It comes from china. Thats why. Comes from china. Thats where the [ bleep ] disease came from. China. Everything comes from china. Soon, the president s words were being echoed beyond the white house. Tell him to move. Why does he have to move . Because hes standing right [ bleep ] next to me. Leading to an alarming increase in antiasian hate crimes. Especially in the United States. I know that youve been trying to track reports of antiasian incidents. How frequently are these things happening . There are at least 1,000 hate crime incidents being reported against asians due to the coronavirus in the last five weeks and now the hate incidents are coming in at about 100 per day. Calling this the chinese virus is a rejection of International Public health and the World Health Organization and saying, were not going to follow their lead, were going to reject that. The Trump Administration didnt just reject the guidance, it tried to make the rest of the world see things its way. At this years g7 meeting of foreign ministers. Todays virtual g7 ministerial wasnt the format wed envisioned. When nations most need a collective economic response, the group of seven ministers reportedly failed to agree on a joint statement because of a Trump Administration sticking point. The german magazine der spiegel was saying at the g7 you wanted them to use the term, wuhan virus and that perhaps caused some rifts among the partners. The response, secretary of state repeating the language in question. Everyone in that meeting this morning was very focused on making sure we solve the Health Crisis associated with the wuhan virus but also the economic challenges we face, the globe as we confront it as well. At every press conference by calling this a chinese virus, just because it originated in china doesnt mean its only impacting Chinese People or that it was only spread by Chinese People. Continuing to do that is doing no good for the United States. In late march President Trump changed his tone and started following the World Health Organization guidance but only after a phone call with chinese president xi jinping. If china chooses to retaliate by shutting off key supply chain and manufacturing areas, you know, that puts us at significant harm, not just economic harm. If the Global Supply chain is significantly disrupted more than it is, you know, we wind up potentially with food shortages. I i hope that cooler heads will prevail because, you know, there is opportunity here. Still to come, we go back to where the coronavirus outbreak began for a look at life after the lockdown. How about no no uh uh, no way come on, no no nnnnono only discover has no annual fee on any card. Iits not acceptable oor nothing. And its definitely not close enough or nothing. Its not a cure, but with one small pill, biktarvy fights hiv to help you get to and stay undetectable. Thats when the amount of virus is so low it cannot be measured by a lab test. Research shows people who take hiv treatment every day and get to and stay undetectable can no longer transmit hiv through sex. Serious side effects can occur, including kidney problems and kidney failure. Rare, lifethreatening side effects include a buildup of lactic acid and liver problems. Do not take biktarvy if you take dofetilide or rifampin. Tell your doctor about all the medicines and supplements you take, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis. If you have hepatitis b, do not stop taking biktarvy without talking to your doctor. Common side effects were diarrhea, nausea, and headache. If youre living with hiv, keep loving who you are. And ask your doctor if biktarvy is right for you. America has gone quiet. Main streets deserted. Businesses shuttered. As Convention Centers are transformed into hospitals and with military checkpoints in the land of the free. This came up. We came up so suddenly. Look, we were surprised. We were all surprised. In fact, experts had been sounding the alarm for decades. One of the things that anybody, any historian, any futurist, would have said, is that we are looking at more pandemics. Not fewer Going Forward. In january 2000 u. S. Intelligence agencies released a 60page report highlighting their collective assessment of the greatest threats to the nation. Top of the list, pandemics. New and reemerging infectious. New and reemerging Infectious Diseases will pose a rising Global Health threat, it said. Its not a question of whether, but when the next killer pandemic will occur. But the very next year, americas attention was pulled away. And the United States went to war. A decade later, we had another warning. Health officials identified a severe shortage of ventilators in the national stockpile. But by the time covid19 hit, there were still far too few. While we cannot predict exactly when the next pandemic will look like, we can at least prepare a response of the truth is, that the United States government did not engage in longterm planning. And that is part of the reason why were in a predicament now. In the place where the covid19 pandemic began, life is starting to return. The virus has been defeated. At least thats the message from chinas ruling communist party. How has it been . Two months of being all alone, in total isolation, but safe. Thats the important thing. Steve mcclure, an expat living in china, is one of the few americans who has remained in wuhan throughout the crisis. I can see the ambulances taking people away. The disinfection squads going around, spraying, you know, they are scary but i think people have to take responsibility to isolate themselves, and do everything, dont go out, and the curve will get lower and the hospitals get back into control of things and we can start to get back to normal again. But regaining that normality, lost freedom. China is incredibly stringent, draconian, authoritarian surveillance state apparatus is ultimately what has stopped the virus from spreading. Chinese officials are telling the world they got it right, that their system was able to stop the coronavirus in its tracks. Are they right . Theres no question. China got part of the coronavirus very, very wrong, and theres a piece of this that they got right. People, governments in the future, could say hey, we should be like china, in a time of crisis. Weve already started to see some governments using the virus as, in an exploitative way. Do you think the United States democracy is in danger . I think it is being put to the test. But authoritarian iism isnt the only way to stop the pandemic. Democratic south korea managed to contain the first wave of the virus with preparedness, swift action, and wide scale testing. The same story in germany, in denmark, and in singapore, where earlier this year, i visited virologist Danielle Anderson at her lab. Inside this lab here is where we keep the live virus. It feels like ten years ago, it was not so live, i wouldnt have thought it would get this bad. What is surprising you now . Guess to me what is most surprising is the rate of spread. It is not the only speed of the spread that has anderson concerned but its ability to reemerge. In many asian countries, this virus seemed to be contained. And now the numbers are going up again. Whats going on . As the numbers went down first, when the containment measures were put in place, now, we have, with other countries been locking down. People arie wanting to return back to their home country or places of work and they are coming from different epicenters of infection so along with the suitcase, theyre bringing the virus back with them. And while america remains in the pandemics grip, the nation may benefit from learning from those once overwhelmed by the outbreak, but now appear to have contained it. What would you say to americans who are going through tough times right now . My recommendation is for americans, is to protect yourself. This is a highlycontagious virus, so it can spread within the community very, very quickly. What happens if you stop paying attention to this. In hong kong, the second wave is actually even bigger than the first wave. We believe we are already over the peak of the second wave but we are not over it for good yet. People can get infected in the streets of hong kong. People are starting to walk in the streets without any protective measures thinking everything is going to be fine because the number is coming down and then a couple of days time, we see a huge influx of patients. If you get come place ent, it bites you. Indeed. Indeed. I first met dr. Alfred wong in february in hong kong, when he was one of the early volunteers on the citys socalled dirty team. A group of medical workers dedicated to treating the victims of covid19. At the time, wong stayed apart from his pregnant wife, if they ate together, it was at a distance. Theyre now reuniting. With a new addition. My daughter was born on the 1st of april. She is healthy. Everything is going well. I mean we have quite, we are quite overwhelmed with all of the parents things, but i guess thats normal. Normal problems. People miss normal problems. True, true. So im happy but im also very worried. While the vast majority of people who contract covid19 will survive, this is much more than a Health Crisis. Its an everything crisis. Exposing the weaknesses in our society, our Health Care Systems, our governments, and perhaps exposing our human nature. Before we go i just want to say these are tough times, but every expert, every single virologist i spoke to, told me things will get better. One virologist described it to me this way. She said this is not the deadliest virus out there. But it has the power to overwhelm society because is spreads so quickly. And like a tsunami, you have to survive the first wave. The other waves are likely coming, but theyll probably be smaller and easier to manage. We will get through this. Youre in this alone.
