Killed in this storm. We can tell you 7 Million People in the u. S. Dont have power. Search and rescue units on the ground in the keys. Officials say a quarter of all homes in that area have been destroyed. Lets get right to it from the florida keys. Nbcs gadi schwartz. Whats the latest . Reporter hey, its not just search and rescue on the ground. It is out in the ocean as well. Theyll check submerged boats and submerged sail boats in particular to see if people are inside. A lot of those are live aboard boats so they may be people inside who tried to ride out the zone. Were in an area that took one of the biggest hits from Hurricane Irma. These are one of the weird peculiarities. First of all, the ocean is this way. So Hurricane Irma came ashore this way. Which has been puzzling the neighbors. This mobile home was sitting about 20, 30 feet over there next to these mobile homes that you see next to it. Somehow the winds of Hurricane Irma picked this mobile home up over this fence thats with five feet tall. Snap that had concrete power pole and dropped it right here in the street. You can see this is a kitchen sink here. This is the flatbed that the mobile home was on. This is where the living room was. This is where one of the bedrooms was. There is destruction of Hurricane Irma. This mobile home destroyed while others seemed to be spared. Some homes down the street. They were also spared. While others had their roofs ripped off. So it is kind of interesting to see how selective irma was. Some neighbors coming back and some are very concerned about those who have evacuated, fortunately, because their homes have been destroyed. Feel a little bit bad. Their homes are okay and theyll to have tell their neighbors that their homes have been destroyed. Theyre not allowed back in here. One thing that weve noticed is Cell Phone Service is nonexistent. Power is nonexistent. No one has access to food or water. Power is running low. Its been four or five days so people are trying to figure out where they can go. Theyre average issing really. Weve talked to people going around looking for water and gas. It sounds like down in florida keys, there are lines forming for basic necessities. Theyre hoping the calvary comes in and resupplies soon. Thank you for that on the Ground Report of the now we turn to the breaking news on where bob muellers investigation is headed. Weve reported on the subpoenas and even the home raid of Paul Manaforts hope. But now production. Heres how trumps lawyer john dowd puts it. They have a wonderful taken handling the production. He is referring to document production. This is where trumps legal team has to review every single white house document before handing it over the bob mueller. And he spoke about it because the daily beast reported the handoffs have begun. Dowd trying to praise the team because he is a recent member having come on in june. At the time, some Trump Lawyers were trying to push out Jared Kushner from the white house, alarmed by his trump tower meeting with the russians, which at the time had not been exposed. The lawyers discussed their concerns with President Trump at the white house. They even wrote a draft statement that could explain kushners departure had he departed. Now today, trumps lawyers are saying anyone who did want to undermine trump is no longer on the team. A spokesperson said she was unaware of the discussion. Jared kushner, was there any discussion about him stepping asighted earlier this year . No, no conversation that im aware of and certainly no presentation as both the president s attorneys ofg record to say. Now, heres the thing about that. Sanders would not know about any kind of conversation like that. Because it is legally privileged. If Donald Trumps criminal defense lawyer told her about it, that would literally break the privilege. What is more significant is why these lawyers thought kushner had these serious legal issues . Here are five reasons. He met with Many Russians including two meetings with the russian ambassador, i know what general mike flynn where they allegedly discussed creating a secret back channel with russia. And three, that included meetings with russian Bank Executives and kushner failed to disclose many of those meetings on his legally required security forms. His connections to that added up to more than 100 more foreign meetings, and then five, he was at that secret trump tower meeting. That might be enough to sink a normal staffer but these lawyers knew they were asking donald trump to fire his soninlaw and everyone knows trumps golden rule follows the godfather. Dont ever take sides against the family. So these lawyers thought there was even a shot that trump would take their advice. Whatever they were concerned about. About the family had to be serious. With me now first is wall street journal reporter Peter Nicholas who broke this story. Good day to you. Peter, you dont have all the details but you sure have some interesting ones. What light can you shed on giving someone, any client, let alone this powerful president , some advice that maybe you want to relieve your soninlaw of his job . I think it was about the lawyers and they werent necessarily united. There were some who thought he had legal complications, more serious than any other aide in the white house and believed for that reason, his continued flens was a problem of one scenario was if he even talks casually about the Russian Investigation with anyone working in the white house, bob mueller, the special counsel, might want to know what was said. And might ask to speak to those people who were in those meetings with kushner. So for those reasons, some of the attorneys believed kushner needed to step aside. They brought those concerns to the president. There were some others had a didnt think it was necessary. We quote john dowd, who is now the lead attorney saying that kushner is fine and didnt need to step down. Im reading about this cover story or description of an event that didnt occur. It is really fascinating. Youre deep inside the debates. You write, the statement on behalf mr. Kushner expressed regret that the political environment had become so toxic. Is that a cover story . Or is that 100 accurate in describing the reasons for his recommended departure . Well, it shows the seriousness with which the legal team and the associates drafted that statement were taking this. They thought it was a real possibility he would step aside. They wanted to be prepared for that. So they created these talking points would be used. Theyre putting the best spin possible on it. The best interpretation. Because they worked for, their client is the president and this is his soninlaw that theyre talking about. But it was a serious concern. The talking points were never used. Ultimately, this is the president s decision and he decided that kushner didnt do anything wrong. There was no need for him to step aside. And ultimately, thats the decision that he made. It ran counter to some of the advice he was getting from some of the lawyers. But it is a political decision and the president s to make of the. But not the lawyers thought was will he enough, they wanted to advise on. They dont advise on all white house personnel but you have the big story of the day. I want to thank you for joining. Thanks. I want to turn to nick ackerman, victoria, and the editor of the journal b who was writing about the possible trump russia pardons in june. Nick, walk us through how this works. You dont give advice as a lawyer if you think theres no chance of it being followed. Thats basically a waste of time but they had to know this would be a real fight with the president. They had to know it was a waste of time. There is no way that donald trump is going to listen to the lawyers on this issue. It is pretty obvious that Jared Kushner is somebody who was never going to be fired by President Trump. He wasnt qualified to do job he was there for in the first place, making peace with israel or the entire government. He was not qualified. But everything he did, he did at the behest of donald trump. And there is no way, just like in the godfather, he was one of the the people for the boss. He was carrying out mr. Trumps orders and there was no way donald trump was ever going to listen to his lures this issue. Paul, i want to play with you the sfround Jared Kushner. Did he do the meetings and he and his own lawyers have said in their view, hes been cooperating and they dont see him as a legal liability. Take listen to this rare time he spoke publicly. The record and documents i have voluntarily provided will show that all of my actions were proper and occurred in the normal course of events of a very unique campaign. Let me be very clear. I did not collude with russia, nor do i know of anyone else in the campaign here did so. I had no improper contacts. I have not relied on russian funds for my businesses. And i have been fully trans parent in providing all requested information. Paul, do you think Jared Kushner is in the clear . Well, clearly not. And i think that his basic problem is and will be credibility. I think the lawyers probably were advising them to have him leave because the further he was away from the white house, for the longer period of time, the easier it would be for a soninlaw to claim that what he did both was proper and also that the, an issue that would come up, did he tell president with this meeting or that meeting or what he did. And as a soninlaw, whoever, whatever the situation as a soninlaw, he has aer higher bar of credit fwoibility to says never discussed. And what does this individual bring to the table . Nick was arguing that hes unqualified. He certainly doesnt have a lot of government or international experience. The lawyers who stay out of whatever they stay out of, theyre there to give criminal advice. Theyre not there to secondguess bewho you see in the middle east. Other than family ties, what do you see as the judgment and basis to keep this individual in the white house . I think thats a great question. And i think we all realize that the family ties for trump means he has more people around him to hide his dirt. Thats why hes there. The fact Jared Kushner had hundreds of meetings that he failed to dissxloes had to go back to disclose they will. The fact hes met multiple times with russians and tried to create a back sxhanl has some business interest that were not getting to the bottom of shows theres some benefit to the trump enterprise for having this engagement with russia. For completely ignoring that russia has propagated all the fake news that was out there. That theyve been creating all this great energy. So theyre turning a blind eye. And i think that Jared Kushners point and reasoning for being in that white house is to be the guy that goats bury the dirt and keep the secrets. That he has a high level security clearance, and he lied to get it, essentially, is really problem attic and i think that should be revoked. Is that your view . If other individuals acted the way did he on Government Security clearances, they would face a stronger reaction . Oh, my god, yes. He lied over 100 times. He left off all the meetings with the russian ambassador. He had his secretary fill out his security clearance which is like saying, turning your back to the importance of this whole security clearance process. He had to have sat down with an fbi agent who took him through every single question of he had to have lied on those questions. This is an simple process where you can have your secretary fill out a form. And just briefly, you had written previously about pardons. Why did you zero in on that . Something we later heard more about. It seeped like a way they would be able to not face the ultimate consequences of what they may have done. Since trump has the pardon power for everyone but himself, it does have the opportunity, he does have the opportunity to perhaps excuse it. It has the negative consequence, of course, and i think i mentioned this in one of the articles. At that point, none of the potential actors, other actors can claim the fifth amendment. Because theyve been granted a pardon for whatever it was they did or may have done. So it is a double edged sword. And of course, bob mueller seems to have gone to snyderman, new York Attorney general, to participate in some of this. So that it is not so clear that he a pardon would in fact get them off from all of what they may have done. Because that only affects federal. Which goes to the big question, if you are in a legal fight with bob mueller, do you think hes thought out more steps ahead than you . And the answer is probably yeah. Thank you for being here. Coming up, new evidence breaking, the kremlin was using online organizing for offline real world events and rallies in the u. S. And later, a worker for sputnik. And later, ten years of the iphone and look how far weve come. Put the whole world in your hands with radio jacks newportable phone. Light weight. Stateoftheart maximum three watts allowed by law. Tonight new information that it wend beyond bots and controls and went into real life political activity. Russian operatives organizing political protests in the u. S. During the campaign, including in august 2016 rally in twin falls, idaho, promoted on facebook. According to a new daily beast report. Heres a facebook account russians allegedly used, touting secure borders and then at their event page advocating american citizens before refugees. You can note the irony here. Foreign adversaries of america posing as americans against alleged foreign adversaries. The page does not indicate many people attended the rally and facebook said it has been set shutting down events like this. But this is the first time the tech company has admitted that the paid ads were used for these events in america. The news comes as Hillary Clinton is saying in a new interview, she is convinced Trump Associates colluded with russia high with also noting that investigators are gathering and all of this is happening as the evidence includes facebook spreading fake news and profiting from fraudulent russian events. Even if passively it has several tech experts saying Mark Zuckerberg should be put on the stand. Richard, your view of what it means now that some of these efforts in russia were going into actual events, offline, real world during the campaign. With, this is what a lot of people suspected all along, that russia was engaged in a multifaceted effort to interfere in this election and that a lot of this are alt right movement was fueled by Breitbart News and russian operatives, organizing through the internet. So this is a specific example that weve uncovered. Im sure well hear about more. But this is how the russians are doing business. And theyve been trying to subvert our democracy for 100 years, since the 1917 russian revolution. But theyve only recently discovered the extreme right, the far right, and the american political spectrum and in particular have tried to take advantage of racial tensions, our racial diversity is our great strength where we work together. The russians of course, would like to us turn on each other and thats what this whole alt right move is about. This is definitely the agenda and we fell for it. As a movie plot, you could say these foreigners are posing as americans against foreigners. Theres a lot to digest there. It is also a corporate issue. There are a lot of companies who want to make moan and dont care about anything else unless theyre forced to. Here was senator warner leading this charge today, talking about facebook. Take a listen. Im disappointed that facebook came and presented to the senate staff, they didnt lay out this incident. I think it is one reason we need to bring in twitter and others. Had has twitter already briefed no. Theyre coming in shortly. Look, i think it goes into the long line, the long list of things we already know. 17 agencies told us that yes, russia meddled in our elections. If you ask russian investigators whether they were republican or democrat, they will say yes, they interfered in our elections. We know that is the case. The question now is, did donald trump campaign, collude with russia . And we have the don junior email which certainly seems to be the case. And honestly, this is starting to look more and more like watergate. The two things keep coming up. Number one is follow the money. Number two is what did the president know and when did he know it . And you have a president he who doesnt want to deal with this issue. So now were going to go into 2018 with not really having gotten to the bottom of this because the president wants to focus on fraudulent commission. On fraud that doesnt exist. He doesnt want to deal with it except he is obsessed. He has to talk about it whenever he can. He goes to russia, meaning the subject of russia whenever he can. The thing about the facebook thing. I have no idea what they knew and didnt know. What we know is that the number of voters paying attention to facebook news, in 2013, it was less than 50 who said they were looking to facebook for news. It is now over twothirds. Were talking about a huge number of people and voters nationwide. Which makes facebook more like a utility. It is almost universal given the number of people have it for sure. Take a listen to the white house today talking again, going back to jim comey. Thats not the president s role. Thats the department of justice and something they should look at. Is that something you would like to see . Im not sure about that specifically but if there is ever a moment where we feel someone has broken the law, particularly if theyre the head of the fbi, i think thats something that should be lookd at. How do you read that . I dont know what theyre talking about. Jim comey, i believe, did break the law when he sent that letter about Hillary Clinton a week before the election implying that they were reopening an investigation. He should not have sent that letter. He did a lot of damage to the Clinton Campaign the way that investigation was conducted and the comments he made about secretary clinton the previous summer. So it was investigated by the special counsel at my request. I filed a complain but they dismiss that had when he left, when he was fired from the fbi by President Trump. If they want to manufacture a story that somehow he helped Hillary Clinton. Thats just a joke. I dont understand whats going on. There he did an enormous. A damage to the Clinton Campaign. And quite frankly, i think he got us into that mess through that letter he sent the week before the election there. And when richard painter says something is a joke, he doesnt mean funny ha ha. No. Just to add to what richard was saying, on the day of the election, there was only one candidate that was under investigation and that certainly was not Hillary Clinton. It was donald trump and his associates and what was happening with russia. And we didnt know about it. Thank you very much. On this important story. Next we turn to a lye report from a different angle. The form he sputnik employee, the group of russian propaganda, he is here with his first remarks on tv since the fbi interview. And we have a report on trumps controversial Voter Fraud Commission including arguments about a back ground check used for guns on voting. Thats the trump idea. Until this week government scrutiny came mostly from u. S. Intelligence agencies looking abroad. It was listed as a russian propaganda effort as a platform for International Audiences of the fbi is different. It focuses on cry. Today rt says it asked them tow formally register and it is something the fbi can investigate. There are reports it is already doing that. The former sputnik employee says he was interviewed by the fbi and a federal prosecutor. You may have heard his reports after he broke ways to sputnik. If the president doesnt want to do it, is that because he would rather focus his efforts we russia on partnering to try to defeat isis . Well, i think Ambassador Haley noted at the u. N. That any attempts will remain in place to that issue is resolved. How does sending im not going to get into the president s negotiating strategy. Andrew fineberg who says his assume visors would say regularly, moscow wants this or that. Russian media organizations like rt and sputnik spreading false hoods and h hillary stuff. The russian sputnik actually pressured its own correspondent to advance this fake story. When he refused, he was fired. Andrew feinberg, for sputnik, took twitter a few days ago and said hes quitting. Hes leaving. He said it seems sputnik is not help a with real journalists. He wouldra rather have propaganda. That was from june. Then fbi contacted him. He spoke to them for two hours, handed over a thumb drive and he detailed how he got directions if the Briefing Room. His exchanges in the white house are under new scrutiny. At the time, the u. S. Publicly criticized sputnik. The white house was still treating them and him in the Briefing Room like a legit news organization. Most viewers would have no idea that entity was actually doing propaganda and that it now we can say is under fbi scrutiny. Sputnik says it let him go because of performance. Fineberg says he fasd tension on the job whenever he tried to be independent and he came to conclude sputnik was pure russian propaganda. Will it was reported with the fbis scrutiny and the firing of fine bheerg is here today for his first tv interview after speaking with the fbi. Thanks for joining me. Thanks for having me. What did the fbi want to know about you . They wanted to know about internal processes, who i reported to, who paid me, what my day was like. Where i got instructions on what to cover, how to cover it. That sort of thing. A lot of internal practices, like i said. And a lot of it stemmed from the article in politico. A lot of the issues were in that article but this was a lot more detailed conversation. The fbi wanted to know pr you who was calling the shots at sput zmik whether it went back to the kremlin . Yeah. I cant say where the instructions came from before they got to me. They cape to me from my editors who were with exceptions, russian, and they would say moscow wants this, moscow wants that. And i dont know if they were speaking to people in the kremlin but even if they were speaking back at the home office in moscow. The Parent Company gets their instructions from the kremlin will. Before the 2016 hacking, theres never been a big push to make sputnik register as a foreign agent. And thats what Paul Manafort and meike nine were doing. Did they show an interest in that . Absolutely. That was the that you recall in the interview. Thats what theyre looking at. They are interested in determining whether or not sputnik should be registering under the foreign agents registration act as foreign propaganda. And there is a carve out in that act for what they call bona fide news agencies. Based on my experience there, i would argue the they are not working as a bona fide news agency. And youre one of the few who spoke out about it. The First Amendment issues are big. Youve raised the question, are they real journalists. Here are some other sputnik employees speaking out about the same they know. I cannot be in a network funded by the russian government that white washes putin. Im proud to be an american and believe in disseminating the truth and that is why after this newscast, i am resigning. What rt does is marry the cemetery line line. Whatever theyre putting out, those lies, basically. Those former employees like yourself are certainly shairs sharing experience. The flip side going in, why was this such a surprise that it would be like this . Thats a good question. I dont think i was naive when i took job. I knew that sputnik was russian government backed. I went in to interview for the job of they asked me questions. I asked questions. And they made certain he assurances. They told me that i would have the editor i cant independence and the ability to work in the same manner that i would work at any other journalism organization. And those promises turned out to be false. Im not going to call someone i know a liar without giving him a chance. From your time there, do you think these kremlin organizations did have collusion, agreements or arrangementes with any trump fs . I cant speak to that. I can say thatle of the most popular arrests about things like wikileaks and pizza gate and other conspiracy theories were prominently featured on the sputnik website. I worked for the news Wire Division which is a separate part of the office. They were featured on the website. They get picked up by other american outlets. Right wing outlets. And sputnik functions as part of the right wing media ecosystem and theres a big difference between the americans exercising their freedom of speech and a news site funded by a Foreign Government with the express purpose of not reporting the news but influencing opinion. Switching to allstate is worth it. Hey hey ho ho its got to go protesters had the first meeting of the Voter Fraud Panel in New Hampshire. A state where trump wrongly claimed there was widespread he voter fraud. The commissioner not even pretending to find evidence making the xlal they changed the outcome of a senate race. Fact checkers said it is not true. Do fact checks matter in apparently they do. Today he began to secondguess his words. In that come you will, i struggled with the word, what verb to use. I said it appears that nonresidents may have tipped the results. Im still wondering if that was the right word. Wonder away. Today they are hearing a commission about the right to vote peacefully fast it were as dangerous as weapon. A proposal to make people pass gun background checks before youre allowed to vote. Think about applying it for purchasing guns. For voting. And democrats long been concerned about Voter Suppression but theyve also long laude the background check on guns. If we can, lets put aside some of the crazy. What do you think is the true purpose of the commission . Its great to be with you. The emmys are this weekend. The plot for this horror film has already been written. Voter suppression. Today they were looking for a cast of actors who will help them write the fiction, not facts theyre searching for. My hope is that. At a pair dollars wont be used to do this anymore. Does that make donald trump the show runner . Where does he fit into the analogy . He does always love to produce a good reality tv show. Our democracy, our election system. The ballot box is our greatest equalizer. When we talk about ways to keep people from the ballot box, were not addressing the biggest concern of our time of americans arent participating in elections. Theres a fundamental difference between my philosophy and this Sham Commission today. They want fewer people to participate. I think that democracy is best when all eligible americans are able to have their voice heard. Do you think donald trump has told the truth about voting in the 2016 election . Well, i think when you are as a candidate talking about a system being rigged, and then you continue with such dangerous and reckless rhetoric that every party has denounce that had thats will voted legally in the last election, to sanctify your own ego for losing the popular vote, you are playing a hard and fast loose game with our democracy. One that myself and thousands of other ad administratedors across the country are standing up against sxooms voicing our opposition against the demand for voters information, their voting history. To the discussions going on today, they need back ground checks. Making it harder to participate in elections. There have been prior administrations that have come forthwith great recommendations. Whats we should be focusing on. Not the tack tech to make the ballot box harder for people to have their voice heard. Stay with me. I want to bring in the professor from the Harvard Kennedy school of government throughout American History when we talk about access to the ballot, we end up talking about discrimination. How do you view the commission and what secretary of state grimes was saying . Sure. So i think the commission was pretty open about the fact they want less people to vote. And i think theyve been a little less clear. But it is apparent they want certain people, certain people to have less power at the ballot box. So theyve directly been targeting college students, minorities, people of color, people who look like they shouldnt belong in the voting booth. And i think this opens up all kinds of problems, all cans of worms. I think it is disingenuous to call these voter i. D. Laws. Instead we should cause them voter intimidation laws, Voter Suppression laws or voter depression laws in general. Let me put your point to the secretary. Do you think some of these ideas like the gun back ground idea that came up today, are these Voter Suppression ideas . They are. I couldnt agree with the professor more. Were already seeing a negative impact of this commission on Voter Registration rolls across the country. People removing their name from the Voter Registration roll because they didnt want their personal information, Social Security up in, voting history, residing under donald trump west need to be meefg forward. Not backward. The days of poll tests, owning property, back ground checks. Thats not the direct we need to go in. Do you think states should push back . One political idea from howard dean was that New Hampshire should maybe lose its special first nation status if it keeps being a part of this effort. Now you see states across the country and at this kind of Voter Fraud Commission. The pushback is coming not just from democrats that we might expect but from a hand have of republicans. And it is causing some kind of interesting, a little interesting consternation among them. They recognize the constitutional right to vote so we should be helping more and more people to get to the ballot box. Were seeing courts beginning to push back rather strongly at the determineations or these various laws that have been put into place. So thats a thing to watch right now. Secretary grimes, i dont know if you heard jayzs new album, he says whats better than one millionaire, two. And you two have taught us a lot. Great to be with you.
