Has forged chose ties with american lawmakers and the nra that led to a meeting with donald trump jr. During the gun lobbys annual convention in louisville in may of 2016. A top respondish prosecutor said on friday. The prosecutor saying quote just a few months ago the wiretaps of these telephone conversations were given to the fbi. And asked if he was concerned about the meetings with donald trump jr. And other american political figures the spanish prosecutor replied, quote, mr. Trumps son should be concerned. Michael isikoff, coauthor of russian roulette. Jose grinda, who is investigating spanish organized crime, how does he wind up in a story that involves alexander torsion and donald trump jr. . Jose grinda is a legendary prosecute in spain. He spent years prosecuting russian organized crime figures in his country. And in one of his investigations in 2013, he has secret wiretaps placed on one of his targets. A guy, alexander romanoff, who was a suspected russian mobster and money launderer and they pick up 33 conversations that romanoff their target has with Aleksandr Torshin the Deputy Governor of the russian central bank, a former leader of putins party in the duma, very tight with putin. And in these conversations, romanoff the suspected mobster refers to torshin as his godfather. The Spanish Police believe they have enough evidence against mr. Torshin to arrest him when he was believed to be flying in for the Birthday Party of romanoff, the suspected mobster. Torshin never showed, the suspicion was he got tipped off by russian officials. Whats striking about this is all this happened in 2013. He was a major target of a russian organized crime, Money Laundering investigation. And during this time, mr. Torshin is traveling back and forth to the United States, forging these ties with various conservative organizations in this country. Hes a lifetime member of the nra and regularly attends its annual conventions. Hes a regular attendee at National Prayer breakfasts in washington. And during the 2016 campaign we now know he was attempting to broker a summit between thencandidate trump and vladimir putin. So there was an attempt to have a meeting with trump, it never came off. The plan was to have it at the nra convention. But donald trump jr. Did meet with mr. Torshin during that time. So the point here is that this guy was a major russian target of the Spanish Police in russian Money Laundering investigations who is forging all these ties with american political figures. And my only question about the revelation from mr. Grinda which i reported on, is what took the fbi so long . These wiretaps have been there since 2013. Really quickly, michael, is there any evidence that these wiretaps that were picked up as part of grindas investigation contain donald trump jr. s voice no, no. I dont want to create any confusion about that. Okay. These conversations were in 2013. Okay. The meeting with donald trump jr. Is not until 2016. So then why is why you write that the special counsel may be interested in this information, if it took place before donald trump was running for president . Do you have any speculation or reporting on why mueller would be interested . First of all, i mean, this is the first hard indication that the fbi is investigating matters relating to torshin. There have been suspicions for quite some time about his ties to the nra and the massive amounts of money the nra spent during the 2016 election. Torshin had made multiple contacts through intermediaries with members of the Trump Campaign or people close to the Trump Campaign. Theres multiple emails to that effect. So this would appear to be, at a minimum, an effort by the fbi to track all the russian efforts to penetrate the trump organization, the Trump Campaign, in 2016. And certainly the overtures of mr. Torshin would be front and center in that. Michael isikoff, thanks very much. Great reporting at yahoo news. Appreciate you joining us. And joining us is david jones, coauthor of russian roulette and also msnbc political analyst. Also joining us, msnbc legal contributor danny cevallos. Lots of russians, lots of ties stretching back to 2013. Those who have been following this and your reporting know thats the year of the moscow Miss Universe pageant. Put this together for us. Why is Alexander Torshin important to this story . As mike put it, and we go into great length in this in the book so you can get it in more details. What weve seen over the course of the campaign, and even before, are multiple russian efforts to make contact with american conservatives and with the Trump Campaign. They try with george papadopoulos, with carter page, with michael flynn, and we see early here, this predating the campaign but leading into the campaign, a concerted effort by Aleksandr Torshin, who also represents a Gun Rights Group in russia that doesnt really exist to do anything there, making common cause with Gun Rights Groups in america, particularly the nra, and attending things like cpac, the annual conservative gathering. Hes clearly been on a Russia Mission to gain influence within the american conservative movement. To what end . Were not quite sure. But he moved from that operation into or used that operation to try to connect the Trump Campaign to either putin or other people in the kremlin. So this is you know, it shows that before the Trump Campaign operation started, russia was already trying to influence american politics. When trump came along, they kicked it into high gear. Danny, the word collusion is thrown around a lot but i think what people are really talking about is conspiracy, right . Whether or not you had all these different players looking for various points of entry into the Trump Campaign, sometimes based on existing relationships, that Paul Manafort may have had, or donald trump and his family may have had. You now have Rudy Giuliani, whos representing donald trump on tv or real life, its not clear which one. He tells the Associated Press today that trumps legal team wants a briefing on the classified information shared with lawmakers about the origins of the fbi investigation into russians meddling in the 2016 election. May take it to the Justice Department as part of the effort to scuttle the ongoing special counsel probe. What we heard from michael is issikoff proves were still getting foreign intelligence on the operation or on the attempt with russia to infiltrate and others to infiltrate that campaign. Is there any legal basis whatsoever for the subject of the investigation to get the classified information the way that Rudy Giuliani is trying to do . Ordinarily never. The notion that a defense attorney like me could make those demands on a prosecutor before there is any discovery obligation and any indictment, when theres just an investigation, the reality is the doj wont even confirm or deny the existence of an investigation. So i think criminal Defense Attorneys and federal public defenders everywhere are watching Rudy Giuliani make these demands upon the mueller team and think this would never be entertained in my cases. And i should also say that, look, as a defense attorney, Confidential Sources are the bane of our clients existence. But yet, even having said that, the notion that we can easily reveal who they are, their identities, based on a demand that is very politically motivated, is a scary notion. These people who are confidential informants are risking their lives in many instances. And to simply demand information about them when were still in the investigative stage is a dangerous thing, and thats coming from a defense attorney. Its a dangerous thing, it could also be a crime. I get this question all the time. Devin nunes, a sitting member of congress, sworn to uphold the laws and the constitution of the United States. If, in fact, he is attempting to reveal information about classified sources with the purpose of making that public, with the purpose of burning those sources just to help the president of the United States, could that in theory be a crime . Even the purpose to help the president of the United States, it could absolutely be a crime under the right circumstances. But beyond that as a Public Policy measure, you will hear a whooshing sound as all criminal investigations go down the train that are using confidential informa informants. Because it will send a message that if you reveal who you are, we may just reveal who you are to the public if it serves some political advantage. Let me come back to you for a minute david corn. Just add up all the different its hard to keep track of the players theres so Many Russians coming into the campaign. New york times reporting on a new Michael Cohen meeting, Donald Trumps fixer also met at trump tower with a Russian Oligarch 11 days before the inauguration in his office on the 26th floor of trump tower. He meets with Victor Vekselberg. He discussed a mutual desire to strengthen russias relations with the United States under trump as president. The men also arranged to see one another, and days after the inauguration, his Company AwardsMichael Cohen a milliondollar consulting contract, gives him 580 now. Your thoughts . Im proud of the fact that we at mother jones last reported that a trader who is vekselbergs cousin, that runs a company here and is affiliated with vekselbergs empire, gave 250,000 to the trump organization, a guy who never gave more than 2,700 before to any political entity, and not even a big republican donor. Its kind of suspicious from the beginning that the cousin of this Russian Oligarch is funneling money into trumps pockets. Now we learn on january 9, 2017, 11 days before trumps inauguration, but more importantly, three days after the Intelligence Community releases its assessment saying russia attacked the United States and did so to help trump get elected president in 2016, three days after that report comes out, Michael Cohen is meeting with Victor Vekselberg and talking about, how can we make things better here . You know. And then a few days later he gets a milliondollar contract from the cousin. It doesnt pass the smell test. I think theres a lot more to be dug out here. Vekselberg, to put the cherry on top of the sundae here, he was sanctioned a couple weeks ago by the u. S. Treasury department. This is not a Russian Oligarch you can be proud of. I believe torshin is also under sanctions. Yes, he is too. Indeed. Danny, we have some more trouble for donald trump jr. Now we have this potential involvement where fbi obtained wiretaps of him with a putin ally who had met with donald trump jr. We have that reporting from Michael Isikoff and now on top of that, senator chris kunz, delaware, sent a letter to senator Chuck Grassley saying these deeply concerned that based on new information we learned this week, donald trump jr. Provided false testimony to the Senate Judiciary committee, saying he wants to renew his request to be called to return and testify before the committee in open hearing. What hes talking about is testimony in which donald trump jr. Was asked the following question in front of congress. Did other Foreign Governments offer to provide assistance to the Trump Campaign . Don jr. Answers, none that i know of. Did other Foreign Nationals offer to provide assistance to the Trump Campaign . No. Did you directly or indirectly seek Foreign Government or Foreign Nationals assistance for the Trump Campaign . No. Are you aware of anyone else seeking Foreign Government or Foreign National assistance for the Trump Campaign . Im not. Did you ever tell anyone youd be receptive to assistance from northern governments or Foreign Nationals . No. And we just keep hearing more Foreign Governments offering assistance, including talking to donald trump jr. Those questions track the federal Election Campaign act. What theyre seeking to find out is whether or not there were any contributions of any, including inkind services, even pamphlets, anything at all from a Foreign Government or a Foreign National. And if donald trump jr. Appeared to answer unequivocally, no, i know nothing about it, i was not involved, then he may have presented false testimony. I want to be very careful what i say here, but it sounds entirely possible. And if theyre asking him to come back, theyre giving him another opportunity, maybe not out of the goodness of their hearts but maybe because they want to see just how far hell go to try and avoid trouble. Or if hell just take responsibility or what hell do when confronted with those same questions again. Yeah. Go on. I was just going to say, joy in this one segment, take a look here. Weve talked about torshin, trump jr. And Victor Vekselberg. For those at home, this can be vexing keeping things in your head. But the bottom line remains, russia attacked the United States and while that was going on, the Trump Campaign tried to collude with moscow. They had secret contacts with putin and putins office which certainly encouraged putin. Then they denied that any of this was happening. We have to keep remembering thats the big picture trump wants to distract us from. That and his fixer Michael Cohen getting a lot of money attempting to arrange meetings with the boss. David corn and danny cevallos, thank you both for joining us. Have a great weekend. Thank you. Donald trump has proven again he isnt running the country so much as putting on a reality show. Thats next. Donald trump is one reason that women are running for office in record numbers. One woman who accused him of sexually inappropriate behavior just won her primary and she will join us. Today donald trump allowed 15,000 Foreign Workers into the United States, including many workers from mexico. Yes, you heard that right. Donald trumps department of Homeland Security today approved 15,000 Seasonal Worker visas because the old trump policy of cutting off visa access was devastating American Industries like marylands crab industry. But of course donald trump wont talk about that. Because thank a mexican worker for your summer crab cakes isnt in the script. On this issue, the trump show script hasnt changed since he came down that escalator. Theyre bringing drugs, theyre bringing crime, theyre rapists. These arent people. These are animals. When the ms13 comes in, when the other gang members come into our country i referred to them as animals, and guess what, i always will. He enjoys a presumption of theatrical spontaneity from many who observe him. Donald trumps demagoguery is scripted, calculated, and rehearsed, as in donald trump literally rehearses it in the white house. This from the Washington Post. In february 2017, trump huddled with Senior AdviserJared Kushner and adviser steven milliner the oval office to talk immigration. Trump reminded them that the crowds loved his rhetoric on immigrants along the campaign trail. Acting as if he were at a rally, he then read allow a few madeup hispanic names and described potential crimes they could have committed such as rape and murder. Then he said the crowds would roar when the criminals were thrown out of the country. As they did when he highlighted crimes by Illegal Immigrants at his rallies, according to a person present in the exchange and another briefed on it later. Miller and kushner laughed. Trump read aloud a few madeup hispanic names and described potential crimes they could have committed, such as rape and murder, then he said the crowds would roar. That is the president of the United States in the oval office producing the trump show. The trump show is why the president of the United States welcomes americans home from being imprisoned in north korea with talk of television ratings. I think you probably broke the alltime in History Television rating for 3 00 in the morning. That i would say. The trump show is literally the president of the United States brainstorming about tanking the brand of Americas National security apparatus. Quote, trump told one ally this week that he wanted to brand the informant who was trying to help the fbi discover russian infiltration in the american electoral system as a spy, quote, believe is the more nefarious term would resonate more with the media and the public. He went on to debut the term spygate on wednesday, despite its previous associations with a 2007 nfl scandal over videotaping coaches. Now it should be noted that the trump show is only one part of the unholy trinity of the pump from thecy, but it has proven to be a very effective handmaiden to the other two parts. It tends to distract you and draw your focus away from the administrative trump presidency, which is devastatingly effective, such as the cruel policies enacted by administration hardliners like separating immigrant children from their parents and putting them in quote foster care or whatever, as john kelly recently put it. And it enables the continuation of the third part of the trump presidency, the con. The part donald trump actually cares about the most. The part in which hes shredding the emoluments clause and enriching himself and his family. Which is how Jared Kushner found himself in the white house laughing at Donald Trumps racist vaudeville act. Joining us president and ceo of voter latino and nbc contributor. Thank you both for being here. You know, jennifer ill start with you because the idea of donald trump having kind of three presidencies, one of which is the con we see in plain sight theyre making money and grifting off the presidency. The other is hurting people. Theyre deporting people, en masse. Theyre separating parents from their children. Its really effective. Its Stephen Miller and the attorney generals presidency. Comment on the show because the show is effective in way too because its aimed at us, the media, opinion writers like you. Its both as you say artificial and deeply, deeply racist. When you get right down to it, thats what the Trump Campaign was about. It was appealing to working class whites and telling them their problems, economics, social, were all about hispanics, all about Illegal Immigrants and legal immigrants. So when the administration runs out of things to do, which they have after the first year after the Tax Reform Tax cuts actually. No reform. They havent accomplished anything. When they cant get anything done internationally because the president doesnt know what he wants or how to get there. They return to their goto. And their goto is racism. And they again and again go to the well hoping that the American Public will become inured to it, hoping that people will say, well, thats just the president again, thats just the way he talks. And because theres no impetus for him to change, because theres no pressure either within the party or from his electoral base, he will keep doing it again and again. I suggest theres only one way to stop it, and that is at the ballot box, hispanics, young people, women, white women, who in the past have been occasional voters, young people have got to turn out and have got to vote in november. Because throwing these people out is the only way you stop it. Were not going to appeal to his better side. He doesnt have a better side. Were not going to be able to have congress run oversight so long as the republicans are in charge. You have to vote these people out. I cant stress enough to my readers, to your viewers that ultimately this gets determined at the ballot box. It is stunning to go back and listen to the story of donald trump sitting with his Senior Advisers, the people paid by the taxpayers, talking about immigration reminding them the crowds love it when i come up with these hispanic names and say im going to lock them and up throw them out are. If thats actually the show, mark gregorian is quoted in this Washington Post story about trump berating kristin nielsen, Homeland Security director, donald trump wants to deliver a crack down that looks like the iraq war. He wants to deliver a crackdown that looks like the iraq war, he wants to do shock and awe, he doesnt realize this is world war i, its trench warfare. He wants to show his supporters that hes hurting people who are trying to come into the country from south and central america. Lets be very clear. The people right now that are at the border, these are not traditional undocumented workers trying to cross, these are for the most part refugees. Women and children fleeing incredible violence that is rooted by american policy that literally transferred a criminal gang from l. A. All the way down to central america. So this is very different. The fact theyve created this policy where they are separating women and children, this is miller but also the chief of staff, john kelly. Under his directive as Homeland Security. The challenges that the American People dont realize how cruel and the extent to which this is happening, the fact that hes saying were not going to provide shelter as we process these individuals, that is against the geneva convention. We are abdicating our responsibility. I want to go back to what jennifer said. Shes right. The fact that the republicans are completely silent on this, the Trump Administration right now is basically creating a massive Immigration Reform by default. Where by 2020, if we continue down this course, youre going to have daca recipients, youre going to have temporary status individuals, other people that are currently here legally with papers, undocumented to a tune of close to 1 million people. Thats unprecedented, joy. The fact that congress is not acting on an Immigration Reform they have plenty of bills to go to the floor but they decided to hold off because theyre afraid the base wont turn out in 2018 if they do something humane is abdicating their responsibility, their leadership, and actually letting basically someone that is unfit to be president rule because he likes ratings. This is more akin, unfortunately, to an autocrat than it is to a democratically elected president. Its a useful correction by you, the administrative part of the presidency, its effective in the sense its hurting people. When it comes to actual policy, things like their tax cuts, they dont work at all. The trade policy doesnt work. Most of it doesnt work. The pain is real for people. But one of the other things that theyve been ineffective at the administrative part of the presidency is tied the trump show, its the wall. They know there isnt going to be a wall, they get its a policy thats ridiculous and isnt going to happen. But the show, when donald trump says the wall and people scream and yell for it, that cows those republican members of congress youre talking about. Thats right. He goes to california and views those mock ups of the wall, god knows what those are. He tells his crowds a lie, he says were building the wall. We are not building a wall. If you recall the last budget prevented them from building the wall. This is one of these symbols its not bean a dog whistle, its a bull horn at this point. Weve actually gotten to the point where a few maybe more than a few of the socalled moderate, most of them retiring congressmen, are trying their best to get a discharge petition that for the first time in my lifetime may actually succeed. This is the ability to get something onto the floor. Paul ryan is deathly afraid of this. He doesnt want to be seen as either weakening his rightwing looneys or giving in to the more moderate people. Theyre going to have to take a vote on the floor. Which is going to be very interesting. I would say one thing. My congressman, barbara comstock, one of the most vulnerable republicans, has not signed on to that petition. Thats the kind of vote that voters have to clue into. How is my congressman, who claims to be independent for the president , really acting when the hard votes come up . Maria, we talk about this a lot over the years. What will activate this massive potential wave of latino voters across the country who voted almost half of their vote share at this point when you have the president building his tv show literally on the bodies of brown people, scaring his base and saying theyre ms13, theyre animals. Using this language and doing it so explicitly, something we havent seen in american politics in a long time, is that the thing that actually makes this the a voting issue that gets these young people to the polls . Trump was a voting issue in 2016. Lets be very clear. The biggest misnomer is that latinos dont vote. 27 million latinos are eligible to vote. Of those, 16 million are regist registered. Of those 16 million, 37 actually went. The game is to expand the base so latinos have a fighting chance. There is such little appetite in making Smart Investments in the community. People are afraid theyre not sure theyre going to vote, i tan tell you theyre going to vote so their families and communities are safe, so they can continue living with the American Dream that they are not racially profiled. The fact that a Border Patrol agent racially profiled two american citizens because they were speaking spanish in the middle of 2018 is abhor ant. If we want to be smart we need americans to basically come up with us, be our allies, let us have a fighting chance. We have to make sure were making those investments and not shy away from it. Absolutely. The parties should be warned. Thank you both very much for joining us tonight. Coming up, an nba players controversial arrest back in the headlines after video of the Milwaukee Police tasing him over a potential parking infraction was released. California values senator Dianne Feinstein to negotiate the price of drugs. Ithe race for governort. Has turned into a scam. Gavin newsoms trying to elect a republican who was endorsed by trump. And villaraigosas being bankrolled by a handful of billionaires. Its everything thats wrong with politics. And none of it is helping struggling families. Heres my pledge to you. Ill keep our budget balanced. Invest in affordable housing. Fight for universal healthcare. And stand up to donald trump. As governor, you can trust me to do whats right because i always have. Its a story that has become depressingly familiar. A confrontation with police ends over a simple infraction or perceived infraction ends with a black or brown woman or man tased, arrested, or sometimes dead. By now we know the names. Philando castille i dont, eric garner, on and on and on. The videos of these fatal or sometimes just disturbing interactions between black citizens and police have been watched millions of times. Well, you can now add Milwaukee Bucks rookie administer lying browns january 26th arrest to that video list. This week the Milwaukee PoliceDepartment Released body cam footage showing how a parking violation outside a walgreens escalated into brown being tased, handcuffed, and arrested. Take your hands out of your pockets now. Take your hands out of your pocket. I have stuff in my hands. Ground tase him, tase him. Taser, taser, taser agghh brown says he knows his story isnt unique and he plans to use his status as an nba player to be a voice for the voiceless. This happens from coast to coast. You know. Its something thats being shown more now that technology has advanced. Its something thats been happening for years and stories have not been told. Peoples stories have not been heard. I feel like me doing this it helps a lot. You said that you want to you know there are many who dont have the resources or the platform and you want to be their voice too. Definitely. I feel like its my responsibility and something i hold dearly. Brown says he also plans to file a civil lawsuit against the Milwaukee Police department. Milwaukees mayor and the police chief have condemned the officers actions. The chief says members of the department have been disciplined, although he didnt say how or release the names of the members of his department. The Milwaukee PoliceDepartment Released the body cam video the same day the team owners of the National Football league, another professional Sports Organization with a super majority of players who happen to be black, approved a policy prohibiting players from kneeling on the field during the National Anthem. Because what could they possibly be kneeling about . Tremaine lee, msnbc correspondent, thanks for being here. Youre just back from milwaukee. It was inevitable they were going to catch a famous person in this constant wave of violent arrests. Ill read a statement by sterling brown on twitter, black men shouldnt have to have their guard up and instantly be on defensive when seeing a police officer. Its our reality and a real problem. I just got back from milwaukee. When you talk to folks on the ground theyre so used to this. Many of us on the coast or the south dont realize that milwaukee has a serious problem, a long history of issues with the police. The highest black male incarceration rates. One of the highest homicide rates in the country. Its the most segregated city in this country. They say it happens every day but finally it took an nba player guested accosted and tased for attention to be shone down on what happened in the city. And for the bucks to respond the way they did. Thats saying something to them, that finally were getting the attention of people that matter. And a fan base that normally wants to see you jump high, run fast, theyre standing up behind whats happening in the community, its a big deal. Any chance per your reporting the names of the officers will be released . So far nothing yet. But well see. Maybe in discovery in the lawsuit. It is ironic this happens on the same day this video was released the same day we find out about this new nfl policy thats going to require all players to stand during the National Anthem or go in the back, not come onto the shield. Here is the president of the United States reacting to that take a listen. You have to stand proudly for the National Anthem or you shouldnt be playing. You shouldnt be there. Maybe you shouldnt be in the country. You have to stand proudly for the National Anthem. And the nfl owners did the right thing if thats what theyve done. You have the president of the United States weighing in on the private employment policies of the nfl. Interesting this is a league 70 africanamerican. Its amazing how divisive the rhetoric has become and the kneeling during the National Anthem issue has become. When you think about black fans who made their voices clear, and saying im not watching any football, and this year is trying to silence the players who by proxy are voicing the concerns that so many of these black fans feel every single day. The idea you watch me every single sunday catch a football, run fast, hit hard, put my life on the line but when we say stop killing us on the streets, and conflating issues of Police Violence with whether youre a patriot or support the troops is not only absurd in so many ways but its par for the course in the dialogue we see every day in america with black folks, whether its starbucks, the walmart parking lot, the football field, its all part and parcel of the same thing. We have a special coming up, chris hayes, yourself and me are going to do a special on everyday racism, a town hall coming up next tuesday, focusing on issues like this. Give us a preview because you shot a lot of packages for this. Whats amazing is whether youre talking about somebody in new york, the midwest, the south, the coasts, the level of frustration, 18er that folks experience just every day living while black, the everyday forms of racism, well short of the police getting involved, well short of Police Violence. Were talking about being racially profiled while getting coffee, while napping on a college campus. It would almost be funny if it wasnt real life in america. This is every day living while black. These issues go from zero to 100 real quick. End up with the possibility of being shot or killed by the police. Folks opened up in email, twitter, my travels across the country, just gathering this consensus. The broad consensus that its tough being black in america, living while black. Absolutely. Cant wait for that. Its going to be a very important event, and join us for a special town hall next tuesday focusing on everyday racism. The same day that starbucks closes its doors nationwide for training on race. Watch tuesday night at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. Thank you, tremaine. You remember aya, she was there long time, three years. The Previous Administration was unable to get her out. Fantastic young woman. And she was released. As you know, in north korea, we just had a very great success. We have three wonderful people, americans that were released just recently. And are at home safe with their families. And you were a tough one. I have to tell you. That was a tough situation. But weve had 17 released. And were very proud of that record. Very proud. And we have others coming. Were in the midst of some very big negotiations to get others out. In most cases theyre americans. But we can try and help other countries too where theres injustice. Weve been working very hard on it. I just want to welcome you to the oval office, welcome you to the white house. Its really very special to have you both. Youve gone through a lot. Youve gone through a lot, more than most people could endure. I want to thank your parents for being such loving parents. You were really very, very special. You were fighting all the way. There was not a day that there wasnt an hour or a minute that you werent thinking about this man and calling everybody and letting us know. And we are all as a group very happy. The state department has been fantastic. Where are my guests from the state department . Where are they . John, john sullivan. You guys were really fantastic. Look at all those people that work at the state department. Youre probably surprised to see that. But maybe id like to ask the parents, your great parents, if you have something to say. Id like to get to the senators, and id like to get to you, mia, and ask you also. Could i start with the parents . I just want to say thank you to you personally for everything that youve done. As well as the state department. But all of you. I just cant even tell you. Ive grown to love senator hatch and mia so much. Not everybody gets to talk to senator hatch and mia love. And when everything happened last week, mia was the one that answered her phone. And was the one that got things rolling with senator hatch to save josh. Ive never seen mia cry before. It was a horrifying, horrifying week. And she got me through it with senator hatch. Senator hatchs office i cannot tell you how much i love all of your staff. So thank you, thank you. And i also want to say thank you to president maduro for releasing josh and letting him come home. Thats very nice. Pop . She said everything. Thats why i let the pretty face take care of this kind of stuff. Very smart. Youre smart. Josh, would you like to Say Something . Im just overwhelmed with gratitude for you guys, everything that youve done. For the support of my wife through those two years. They were very, very, very difficult two years. Not really the great vacation that i was looking for. But were still together. Starting off a marriage rough, but now were going to be together. Im just so grateful for what you guys have done and for thinking about me and caring about me, just a normal person. So it really touches me. Thank you. Youve been very brave, actually. Youve been incredibly brave. We saw what was happening inside of that prison. So you really have been very, very brave. Bob corker, like to Say Something . Great job. Thank you. Were just glad to have you home. A lot of people have worked for a long time to make this happen. I want to thank everyone at the state department, in particular i want to thank caleb mcnairry who knows this area more than probably anybody in the United States. Hes here with me today. Where is caleb . Are you back here . Come on over here. Fantastic job, that is really great. Its quite an experience that we can almost write a book about just the last 48 hours. But were glad we were actually, mr. President , taking off on the runway, nothing in venezuela happens quite in the same way that it happens here. And we were going down the runway. And they turned the engines off. And we turned around. So we still werent sure we were leaving. What happened . Why did they do that . There was an instrument issue that occurred. But finally we got out of there. Obviously josh had a huge smile on his face. We landed if ever there was a time anybody was happy there was a bad instrument on an airplane, that was a better alternative. There were people that we worked with down there that i do hope at the right time youll have the chance to thank. Theyre people who really want to try to affect the relationship in a good way. They were very helpful to us in getting him out of there. I know you talked with one of them last night on the phone when i was having dinner with him and i appreciate you doing so. Thats great. Thats really great. We have pastor brunson, a wonderful christian pastor. And hes right now in turkey. Hes been there a long time. And they say hes a spy but hes not a spy. And were going to all work and weve been working for his release. Having a hard time. Theres a trial going on. But the trial is not so much of a trial. And were talking to the folks in turkey about doing something about it. But pastor brun doson, i hope y can hear us, well be helping you at some point. Weve been working on it for a while. Hes been there a long time and hes a totally innocent man. Mike lee work, you like to Say Something . I want to thank all those who have been involved in this. Senator corker, senator hatch, representative love, caleb, the state department, everybody involved. Josh, i wish you a warm welcome home. Weve missed you, weve prayed for you. And marian and tammy, welcome to our country, which is now your country. [ speaking spanish ] gracias. Very good, you understood that beautifully. Very good, good job. Good job. Orrin hatch, senator, spectacular man. Please. Mr. President , i cant tell you how much i appreciate you. As you know, i was the one guy who really supported you 100 . Very early. And i do now. I think youre cog a terrific job. This shows why we support you. You actually this was i have to say, these folks did a great job. I was really thrilled with the way bob handled himself. Day remember and others did such a good job. We have good people working with us. The folks in this delegation very sincerely wanted to get josh out of there. The parents were as good of people as ive ever met in my life. And you better really live a good life. Is all i can say. But this wouldnt have happened without you. We just want you do know that when you look back over your tenure in the presidency, this is just one of the many great things you are doing. But its really a great thing. And i know that we can rely on you and count on you and talk to you and meet with you. These are all very important things. We love you and we want to support you however we can. Thank you, i appreciate it, youve all been very supportive. I really appreciate that, thats very nice. I thank you very much. Thank you. Mia . Ive been thinking about what i was going to say today. And its been an emotional day. But so many utah families send their families out, send their sons and daughters out for maybe a year and a half to two years, and they want to know that theyve got if something happens to their children that theyve got someone, the United States will have their back. And i dont think that there is a person in the United States right now that doesnt realize that you have their back. So i wanted to personally thank you for keeping a promise that you made to me. Every time i would go and see you i would bring up joshuas name and you would say, im going to do everything i can. And obviously i believe it. I also wanted to say to josh that your mom never let us forget about you. Thats right. That is she is one of the strongest women i know. And we have started a friendship that has been that started through maybe some heartache and some pain, but we are going to be friends forever because of the bond that we have had. And so, you know, i just wanted to say sincerely that we are with you. Utah has been praying for you and so happy that youre coming home. And utah wants to thank you, mr. President , for making this happen. We wouldnt have been able to do this without you. Everybody here, senator hatch, mike lee, bob corker, i mean, the state department, we all Work Together to make this happen. And, you know, you dont know us, but we know you very well, joshua. We welcome you home. Thank you very much, mia. It is true, every time id seemy yeah look, dont mention the name joshua holt, were working, were doing it. But she didnt forget. She was out there pitching as was bob, as was mike, as was orrin. We really had a great team. Thats a strongny ch nucleus, g job. Were doing very well in terms of the summit with north korea. Looks like its going along very well. As you know, there are meetings going on as we speak in a certain location which i wont name. But youll like the location. Its not so far away from here. And i think theres a lot of goodwill. I think people want to see if we can get the meeting and get something done. If we do the that done, if we can be successful in the denuclearization of the korean peninsula, it would be a great thing for north korea. It would be a great thing for south korea. It would be great for japan and great for the world. Great for the United States. Great for china. A lot of people are working on it. Its moving along very nicely. So were looking at june 12th in singapore. That hasnt changed. Its moving along pretty well. So well see what happens. Thank you all very much, we appreciate it. Congratulations. Thank you, everybody. Thank you. Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you, everyone. Thank you for leaving the room. Thank you for leaving the room. Those talks have gone very well. Very well . Theyve gone very well. The talks have gone very, very well. Id rather not say but the talks have gone very, very well. Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you, press, leave now. Thank you, we are leaving. All right, we were watching that live coming from the white house around 8 57 p. M. Local time. Joshua holt on the lefthand side of your screen, 26 years old, utah man, kept in prison in venezuela for about two years. Most of two years. This again allegedly for holding weapons. He was arrested on weapons charges during a trip to venezuela. Hed gone to venezuela to marry a woman, a venezuelan, her name, tamara. And she is now she was sitting to the left side of the screen here from this picture. Again, these pictures from moments ago. This after what was an eighthour trip, about an eighthour flight from caracas, venezuela, they landed in Dulles Airport around the 7 00 p. M. Local time there in virginia. And then we are watching this live gathering at the white house there with senator corker as well as mia love, the representative from utah, and senator orrin hatch and others as well as the parents of joshua holt. Jeff bennett is at the white house for us. Not too far from where this event just finished up. Jeff bennett, our white house correspondent, who has been watching this on a memorial day weekend, a saturday. And they have this to mark the weekend, and oh what a weekend it will be for the holt family, huh, jeff . Thats right, richard. I think behind me you can see some of the reporters making their way from the oval back to the Briefing Room to their work spaces. It was interesting hearing the president hail his own record for securing the release of what he described at 17 american prisoners held overseas. He said, looked at joshua holt, said, you were a tough one. Thats because washington and caracas have been at odds for years. The two countries havent exchanged ambassadors since 2010. So the fact that this happened at all is fairly remarkable. We know members of the utah delegation to include orrin hatch, mia love, have been working on this for two years over the past two administrations, really. Bob corker, the Top Republican in the Senate Foreign relations committee, went down there as the closer, met with maduro on friday. All of that preceding the release of joshua holt. Quickly, comments about north korea and meetings going well . He described those meetings as going well, said were on track for this summit to happen on june 12th in singapore, as was the case before thursday when the president surprised us all by scrapping that meeting. Of course the next day, within 24 hours, he reversed course. So the headline there, well have to see really how it takes shape. All right, jeff bennett at the white house, thank you so much for that. Breaking news, joshua holt now back on american soil this hour. Breaking news coming out of washington, d. C. Thanks for being with us on msnbc. We continue now. Tonight Rudy Giuliani and the Trump Legal Team looking for a classified briefing of their own.
