Could you make a case for plagiarism . Not when 93 is different than Michelle Obamas speech. I think after tonight, we wont be talking about this. And good day everyone, im Andrea Mitchell in cleveland where the blame game is in full gear over Melania Trumps copy cat speech. Her speech hailed at first as a major success and a great performance is now the center of a Major Campaign meltdown because of passages that are virtually identical to Michelle Obamas 2008 Democratic Convention speech. Today, Trump Campaign chairman Paul Manafort tried to brush the whole episode under the rug. While msnbc news uncovered new details about the speech, turmoil inside the trump Family Circle. And now another controversy, the rock band queen says, the Trump Campaign never received permission to use we are the champions. The big theme for that dramatic entrance last night. Joining me now, msnbcs katie tur outside of trump tower. In the calmness of manhattan, compared to cleveland, katie, which is absolutely wild today. So lets go inside this speech controversy and what is happening within the trump Family Circle or the insiders circle . This is a lot of finger pointing going on today. Reporter yeah, im told by sources within the campaign that donald trump is not happy about the way that his wife was set up yesterday with that speech. They wanted melania to come out and look as best as she possibly could, paint a picture of donald trump the family man, paint a picture of herself and her story. They wanted her to come out and be the star of the evening. She was a priority last night. And they were hoping that after all was said and done that the initial reactions would remain the reactions that she did a great job. She was poised, she read well from the teleprompter. This backlash that is coming now, these accusations of plagiarism are rat mg the campaign and frustrating the candidate because they feel like theyre not being treated fairly. Thats why you saw Paul Manafort come out and try to blame the Hillary Clinton campaign. Theres a lot of finger pointing going on internally as well. People saying that it hasnt been run well. That things are not going as smoothly as they want them to go. And theyre saying that Melania Trump was a unfortunate victim last night. She was humiliated and that a head should roll. Will the Campaign Fire somebody from this . The campaign is pushing back on that idea saying that no, this is a coincidence. This is not a copy right on common words and melania was speaking from her heart and speaking her own words. Weve asked if there was anyone on the team that wrote that speech who might be take responsibility for that, and i have not got an answer from that. Ive asked who was on the team that helped her speech, helped her write that speech, and i have not gotten an answer for that either. But again, andrea, this is just another indication that this campaign is still not running smoothly. And we are over a year from its inception now. Theyve fired Cory Lewandowski in order to make things run better to work better with the rnc, to get on a coordinated message to send out rapid responses against the Hillary Clinton campaign. To make sure that the leaks coming out of the campaign were sewn up and anything but that has happened since Cory Lewandowski left. It is the same fighting we saw before. The same finger pointing, and the same level of frustration. And katie, one quick followup because theres also a lot of controversy last weekend over the fact that Melania Trump was not at her husbands side when mike pence was introduced aech after a bit of a scramble over the Vice President ial selection. Some reports of insider grumbling and she was displeased with the way either family members or members of the staff set her husband up with the whole unraveling of any reporting on that . Reporter initially, we have a little bit. Initially when she did not show up for the pence announcement, we were told that she was in new jersey with barron a couple days later, cnn reported thats because she was doing prep work on her speech. And now im hearing from sources within the campaign that she was actually quite frustrated with the family for pushing mike pence on to their father. She said she didnt feel comfortable, according to this source, with the pressure that they were putting on him to make this decision. And that she didnt show up at this press conference out of protest. So so far weve heard three stories, official one from the campaign saying she was in new jersey, another one saying that she was working on her speech, and now sources within the campaign saying it was because she was not happy with the how the decision for mike pence went. Katie tur outside trump tower, thank you very much. And today, Donald TrumpsTop Republican allies are coming to Melania Trumps defense. Youre a former prosecutor, could you make a case for plagiarism . Not when 93 of the speech is completely different than Michelle Obamas speech. And they expressed some common thoughts. Listen, almost word for almost word for word. The worst day of the convention is the first day because everyones building up to it and everybody gets breathless. The delegates and the media about something to cover in a controversy to talk about. I think after tonight we wont be talking about this. Well, republican senator John Barrasso chaired the conventions Platform Committee and joins me now. Senator, welcome, thank you very much. Great to be be you. Finally tonight republican elected officials, Mitch Mcconnell, paul ryan, paul ryan and Mitch Mcconnell not in prime time in the 10 00 hour. There was some suggestion this perhaps paul ryan whose been ambivalent at best didnt want to be a full throated endorser tonight. But in fact i was told pretty authoritatively that it was the Trump Campaign that has taken charge of the 10 00 hour in particular and didnt want the highest elected official, republican official, the speaker of the house, didnt want him in that big 10 00 prime time network rollout. Well last night joni erinst was scheduled to be in the big prime time hour, senator from iowa, terrific, she gave the response to the state of the union a few years ago. So clearly tom cotton, again she was after that 10 00 hour. Because what we know is schedules slip. So, well see that at conventions. People are bothered that the fact that over the years conventions were too predictable. This is an exciting convention, lots of activity, and i think it was exciting day yesterday with a question about the rules. I was the platform and at a Platform Committee chairman overwhelmingly approved it. It was a solid, conservative, republican platform that talks about hour views and our vision for the future and one that obviously paul ryan, Mitch Mcconnell, and donald trump all have endorsed. Its great to make a virtue of unpredictability, suspense, this is reality tv, whatever you want to call it. That ruckus on the floor yesterday, most figured how it was going to end in terms of who had the votes, but was that a great way to to raise the curtain . I would have let them have the vote, it would have delayed the proceedings and so much of the proceedings these days, and i know you read a lot of history, they went until 2 00, 3 00 in the morning. Now most are focussed of being in the hours of people watching around the country. I would have let the vote happen, but i was fine with it. The platform that i chaired can won overwhelmingly. Do you think that the campaign is really up to snuff . I mean here we are at the convention, there are three big moments. Arguably Donald Trumps speech, Melania Trumps speech, and mike pences speech. And so far they had a great performance from Melania Trump, and yet, an hour later, all these charges of plagiarism and the fact is that they are virtually identical. Its great for Chris Christie to say, well 93 of the speech wasnt copied, but that means 7 was. And it was copied not from laura bush who some other nancy reagan, a republican icon, who in the republican pant yum would go to Michelle ObamasDemocratic Convention speech . To lift some paragraphs. I dont know exactly what happened. I think its unfortunate. I feel very bad for melania. She has an incredible story to tell, and she gave a great speech last night. And i would hate for this to overshadow the message that she was bringing. And the message that the Republican Party is bringing, making america safe again. In a night we heard from people, families, military, people that focus on keeping us safe. People that have lost loved ones, and thats what the American People are concerned about. I mean the platform is all about jobs, the economy, and National Security. And National Security is not just border security, its economic security, its energy security, those are the things that unite us and are going to win this selection for us in november, andrea. Senator John Barrasso, great to see you. Thank you for having me. And so what do the pros say about the speech . First hear more similarities between Michelle Obama in 2008 in denver and Melania Trumps speech last night. From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond, and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. Bahrack and i were raised wih so many of the same values, like you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond, that you do what you say youre going to do. That you treat people [ applause ] with dignity and respect. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them. Because we want our children and all children in this nation to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard them. Michael gursen was a speech writer for president george w. Bush, chief of staff for laura bush. Both joining me now. You would think that a republican convention, if youre going to steal a speech, youd steal it from a republican. Im sure that laura bush, and i know nancy reagan and other republican first ladys had some great speeches they could have taken paragraphs from. Michael, let me first ask you, youre a speech writer, how does this happen . Well it happens with poor staff work. Its hard to attribute that to mrs. Trump. No, i would say right off the bat, the principles get a lot of help, everyone except perhaps barack obama whos the best speechwriting president we have some say since abraham lincoln. Everyone gets a speech draft, Ronald Reagan wrote a the love his stuff, bill clinton did, they write on a draft. There seems to be a theme which is a campaign thats not really ready for for prime time in that this case. You saw it from Paul Manafort going after kasich yesterday, which was really just extraordinary for a first day of a convention. The way they put down dissent was brutal. You add these things up and it looks like theyre not ready for their moment. Youve been in the white house over of course many years, anita, whats your take away . Well, i think the last thing that the candidates spouse wants to be is a distraction to the campaign. They want to add value to the campaign. And here is someone that went to bed last night, thinking she had a victory. And she wakes up to a controversy. And i agree with mike, you know, thats a staffing issue to make sure its vetted, anything may not be repeated by someone else. Thats easy. What is a fix for that . The fix is to have an infrastructure around the candidates spouse too. I think this is lesson number one for any campaign. Dont forget the candidates spouse. They dont have to have a large staff, but somebody really who is looking out for them, coordinating with the president s team. And when you talk to republicans, they put it in the context also of the ground game in early states. A fundraising, theres a lot of like lacking capacity in this campaign at the highest levels, and you know, i think that be disturbs some people. Its really remarkable considering the disorganization, the lack of fundraising, the lack of coordination and staffing and depth that donald trump is battling right now in our National Poll within five points of Hillary Clinton. And within the margin of error, you know, he could be almost neck and neck. Its worked for him. The strategy has worked for him thus far, now as mike knows, and i know, the general election campaign, youre moving into an entirely new phase. And there will have no room for rookie error. Reince priebus was with some of us this morning and was asked how he would respond to this, lets watch. If you found that a speech writer had done that, would you fire that speech writer . Probably. Theres a speech and theres similarities, the campaign clearly makes the case that these are basic themes that are commonly used in discussion and dismiss it totally. And the medias going to analyze it and talk about it and, you know, 24 7 news cycles, its going to continue. So its really stepping on the message that he said that he would fire the speech writer. Yep. I think having been a speech writer, maybe thats a little extre extreme, but i think it was clearly a staff editor. Staff problem. And there should be a solution here. So, let me just better understand, so youre a speech writer for a nominee, first lady, president , did someone factcheck that speech . Does it go through a vet . There is a Google Search mechanism that can be done. At the white house theres a large mechanism, a staffing process, 15 different eyes, you know, are looking at things and factcheckers. And a campaigns a little bit looser and it puts more responsibility on the speechwriting staff themselves to provide this. The Senior Leadership of a campaign, theyre looking for big themes. Theyre looking for campaign strategy, theyre not necessarily vetting in this way, but someone has to. You know, it came out on twitter and tamron hall interview you know the guy that caught it, today, Paul Manafort was blaming the Hillary Clinton campaign for putting that out there. I frankly did not get any messages from anybody that i know on a campaign that i cover, you know, 24 7, tipping us to it, im not sure at all they were responsible. I think this in a case like this, you have to look inward. You have to look and see what broke down in your own system. This is not, you know, something that was fabricated by anybody else. And it is easy fix. And i think there were so many great messages in her speech last night, and a call for unity, respect and dignity for other candidates, i mean those are the things that they would want the speech to be remembered for. It was one of the few grace notes of the campaign so far. I was going to say, in a red meat or raw meat as chuck todd called it last night night, her speech was the one that spoke to donald trump and his values and what hes like as a person. Thats the First Insight that any of the viewers would have to who is this person, donald trump . And you were looking for that in this speech last night. This is the first of the family members that will over a series of nights talk about him as a human being and as a person and not the candidate that weve seen on the trail. Anita mcbride, former first ladys chief of staff and michael, thank you so much. Thank you both for your experience andier wisdom. And coming up, enemy territory, the other Convention Speakers were trained on one target. Hillary clinton. New York Democratic congressman joe crowley, clinton ally joining me next right near cleveland. Youre watching Andrea Mitchell reports on msnbc. Even after a shaky convention start here in cleveland, there is one central theme that continues to unite republicans, attacking Hillary Clinton. I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son. Thats personally. If Hillary Clinton cant give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency . [ applause ] we got to be united because our enemy is not other republicans, but is Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party and we all know she loves her pantsuits. Yes, you know its coming. But we should send her an email and tell her she deserves a bright orange jump suit. [ applause ] thats right. Hillary for prison. She deserves to be in stripes. For another point of view, joining me now is congressman joseph crowley, vice chairman of the democratic office. Loyal opposition. The counterconvention. Welcome to cleveland. Thank you. Well you watched last night, so you watched them just beating the heck out of Hillary Clinton. Uhhuh. And we can factcheck it to death, you know, facts were much in dispute last night, i covered all of those benghazi hearings, a lot of what was said is not accurate. That said, how do you counteract that . Because it was really viral. I think it is what it is. I think what people is see is what theyve been seeing manifest throughout Donald Trumps entire campaign from start to where it is right now. That same language, the same the fear mongering that we saw with Rudy Giuliani last night was unprecede unprecedented, even for giuliani in terms of where he took it. And what does Hillary Clinton have to do, shes taken the unusual step of campaigning all this week. So shes out there with the base. Shes in las vegas today, and shes been with the naacp and other groups, the American Federation of teachers. Strong supporters, shes been doing some interviews. Yep. And at the end of the week were all going to be in florida where she will most likely be rolling out her Vice President ial choice to try to step on Donald Trumps message. Shes got a big decision to make obviously thats going to impact the her election. Who her fellow running mate will be. And suspect itll be made some time friday, maybe over the weekend at some point. But i think the big difference youre going to see in terms of the convention, much more unified. Were going to have a lot of whats going on here as well, in terms what have we saw on the Convention Floor yesterday, the rukous and the level of scrutiny, yelling, the shrillness of even giuliani was even viewed it from television were caught off guard by that. At the same time, shes vulnerable, especially at a time when there are increasingly jittery times, terror attacks abroad, lone wolves at home, attacks on police. Right. America does feel in a very tense moment were told that Donald Trumps speech thursday night is going to echo a lot of law and order themes much Richard Nixon in 1968 when the cities were burning. Sthaz what they are trying to echo. No doubt. And the rhetoric was there yesterday. At the end of the day, no new solutions. Nothing new in terms of what donald trump would present in terms of dealing some these issues. And i think we look back again, Hillary Clinton is the most prepared person in the history of our country to be the president of the united states. Why does 67 of americans tell us in our poll that they dont trust her . Than fbi report by the fbi director james coe my really done her some damage. I think that what she has said, shes not perfect. She is a human being. And someone should remind donald trump he is as well. At the end of the day, when the American People see her through this convention and focus, were coming together right now as a party as well. And i think thats also going to have an affect on the numbers. On the wonderful commercials, they talk about that our children are watching, the words of donald trump used, that donald trump, and im from queens, new york, youre frat bronx, im from queens, ive lived around this guy my entire life. The only thing bigger that Donald Trumps build sergeant name himself. Hes a con man, con man don, and i think the more people see what happened, the way she speaks and talks, theyre going to come to the conclusion themselves. I know hillary. Ive known her for over 20 years. Sincere and incredibly deep and honest individual. And im going to help her move forward on that as well. When she tells Charlie Rosen she wants somebody to step in and be president , does that describe tim kaine . I think we have a deep bench. I think theres one of the things about our side thats not reflected on the republican side at all. The level of the deepness of our bench. Tim is certainly one of them. Speaks spanish fluently, former governor for a southern state, irish catholic, gets me charged. And i think thats certainly speaking to the voters in america that the trumppence campaign is not speaking to. Thank you very much for being here. And coming up, hes the only republican nominee for president here at this convention. He also knows what its like to run against a clinton for president. My one on one with senator bob dole, coming up next, youre watching Andrea Mitchell reports on msnbc live in cleveland. It takes a lot of work. To run this business. But i really love it. Im on the move all day long. And sometimes, i just dont eat the way i should. So i drink boost® to get the nutrition that im missing. Get medical help right away if you have trouble breathing. Fast heartbeat, extreme drowsiness, swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, dizziness, or confusion. Ask your doctor if youre tresiba® ready. Tresiba® ready senator bob dole is the only former president ial nominee, republican nominee attending this years republican convention. Sitting with the trump family last night. Even singled out by Melania Trump in her speech. I talked to senator dole about why he decided to show up, even though he had supported jeb bush and all of the bushes had decided not to attend. Im a republican, been one all my life. I was the partys nominee, the partys been very good to me. I thought it was just the natural thing to do. I started going to conventions in 1964, havent missed one since. And i wasnt going to miss this one. You said to me six months ago, when all of this was starting and heating up, you said that donald trump needs to tone down his rhetoric and get into the issues, and explain what hes going to do about the economy. He hasnt really done that. Hes done better. In fact, the one that really bothered me was the governor of new mexico. When he criticized martinez. Of course the judge too. I thought that was over the top and told him on the telephone, there had to be some way he could work out the differences with the governor of new mexico and i inferred from what he told me that he knew he made a mistake and they were trying to fix it. What do you think about him calling for a ban on muslims coming into this states . Well, i didnt agree with that. I agree they should be vetted, carefully. Because there would be some who shouldnt be coming to the u. S. In the group. And i think hes backed off that to some degree. Have you seen him since hes running for president . Not in person, but by phone. Can you imagine him in the oval office . Couldnt at first. I thought, you know, this candidate will last about three months. Well, i was wrong as millions of others were. If you look at the resumes of Hillary Clinton, former first lady, former senator, former secretary of state, versus donald trump, businessman, pluses and minuses, some bankruptcies, some, you know, three marriages and a lot of controversies, how do they matchup in terms of being qualified to be commander in chief . Well, i mean hillarys got a lot of baggage too. And i dont believe her case on the server and, you know, the head of the fbi, in fact said she made a number of violations and she should have been charged with something. So i think the fix was in when her husband met with the attorney general on the tarmac. But thats just my opinion. And she said some terrible things about trump. Well, he calls her crooked hillary. Do you think he still does. Do you think thats the way to run a campaign . The name calling . Well, i never did, but, you know hillarys made a lot of mistakes, and thats a tag he gave her, and i wouldnt have done it, but he did. Apparently its effective. I think her disapproval ratings have gone up. Her trust worthy rating has gone up no, gone down. But its going to be a good, close campaign. In my view. And i certainly not the expert, i lost. Any final advice to trump on his speech thursday night . When he gets on that stage. I cant give him advice. Hes been a great financial success, hes built an empire. He already knows what he should do, and thats to speak to the people, talk about issues and not take he might mention hillary, but lets leave everybody else alone. You know, say thats history. My view is hell do a good job. And pence will do a good job. Senator bob dole. He is going to be 93 on his birthday this friday. And coming up, the match game fallout after Melania Trumps Convention Speech appears to lift word for word from Michelle Obamas speech eight years ago. This is Andrea Mitchell reports only on msnbc live from cleveland. vo you can pass down a subaru forester. dad shes all yours. vo but you get to keep the memories. Love. If you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to geico. Its what you do. Squuuuack, its what you do. Theres a political tint to this whole issue and, you know, certainly weve noted that the clinton camp was the first to get it out there in trying to say that there was something about the speech that Melania Trump gave. Its just another example as far as were concerned that when Hillary Clinton is threatened by a female, the first thing she does is try to destroy the person. Trump Campaign ManagerPaul Manafort putting the blame on Hillary Clinton and her team for the charges that Melania Trumps speech was plagiarized from Michelle Obamas 2008 Convention Speech. Joining me now for the daily fix, chris alyssa, founder of the Washington Post fix blog and political reporter Jeremy Peters and msnbc contributor. Well, i dont know how you draw the conclusion that it was the clinton team, but i have to tell you, whoever spotted it and whether it was the guy who tweeted it out, it wasnt who spotted the flaw, it was the person who put that speech in the teleprompter. And i think the victim here is Melania Trump who beautifully performed, elegantly, and eloquently a speech that was very well written, except that two very important paragraphs were written by sarah eight years ago. The problem here is look, this isnt a good story for the Trump Campaign no matter, right, but the attempt to turn it into this is about hillary or as ive seen lately, this is melanias fault. Thats a fight youre never going to win that fight. So this is about at this point, managing what is not a good situation and shrinking the news cycle of it for as long as possible. They keep saying were not going to fire anyone, everything is fine. It is hard for me to believe if the candidates wife is out there publicly embarrassed by doing this, because you know she didnt know that she was repeating Michelle Obamas words. Its hard for me to imagine that they just let, well, well just continue on. Damage control is to, you know, lay the blame if youre not going to fire and says so and so did it, careless, whatever you want to say. Protect the candidates wife, isnt that the top priority . You would think so, you would also think that a top priority would be screening and vetting the speeches which every Political Campaign has done basically since the beginning of the modern convention. And to think they wouldnt run a speech through a software system. Anyone asked rue tone teenly to see if anything smells funny. If i could send a contrarian note here for a second. Watch how this is playing in the conservative media, especially if you watch the way that republicans are responding to this, they are essentially saying, nothing to see here folks, this is a quote unquote, liberal media concoction 93 was okay. Newt gingrich said that he pointed out that president obama had borrowed phrases from patrick and that joe biden very famously had been caught in a plagiarism scandal. Look, jeremy is right, this isnt necessarily about the base of the party. I think theyre going to be with him. And i think the more you turn it into its the media versus us, thats a good narrative for them hell survive this. To me its interesting because it gets right into the trump inner circle. This is his wife who didnt want to give this speech. Was he reluctant . And did so, and now is having to deal with something that i guarantee you she had no clue she would have to do. Should have been her moment of glory. In fact if youre donald trump, youre watching the media, youre getting ready to tweet, whatever, youve got to be infuriated that your wife is exposed this way unfairly. Oh, absolutely. And i think whats also going on here, though is an interesting dynamic within the trump universe. The universe of supporters that he can take solace in as a matter of politics. And that that his fans defend him almost no matter what. Its a very much us versus them mentality. And they disdain the media, nay disdain the political establishment and see any attack on trump, no matter how legitimate as an attack on them. And its a very unusual die nam tokyo watch. But theyre almost always going to be with him. I dont know that this situation is any different. And its good for him and the base, jeremy, the question is at some point he is going to have to expand beyond the base. Hes got the base, the Convention May not necessarily be for that, but at least in part is usually is, to get it a liberty broader. Say hey, my appeal is better than this, just this narrow group. Its harder to do that with these stories. Well have to leave it there. To be continued, jeremy, chris, thank you, guys. And coming up, swing state gamble. Can donald trump win ohio while bashing ohios popular republican governor . The answer to that, youre watching Andrea Mitchell reports only on msnbc in cleveland. Party chairman Reince Priebus today criticized the Trump Campaign for trashing ohio govern john kasich over boycotting the convention in his own state. Matt lauer asked trump about all of that. Paul manafort said hes been petulant and embarrassing the state of ohio, do you agree . Well, look, he signed a pledge, number one. But honestly, he got beaten so badly, i won, i guess 37 states, even more than that, and he won one and if i got beaten that badly, i wouldnt show up either. He doesnt have to show up, its fine. Former pennsylvania senator and republican president ial candidate Rick Santorum joins me now. This is classic trump. He breaks all the rules, and he wins. Hes breaking another rule, you dont trash an incumbent governor, and it works for him. What could be more important than winning ohio to a republican . I dont know are not going to decide who theyre going to vote for for president because whether your candidate for president says something nice about your governor or not. They like john, but its not like, its not like family. So i dont think that, i dont think thats going to have any impact on his electability here in the state of ohio. Its not conventional, but then again, if it was, we wouldnt be here today. So you ran against him, and, you know, you supported another candidate. You have embarrassed him as the nominee. I have. Its a binary choice. I mean its either for donald trump and for things that i believe generally speaking that a more traditional conservative viewpoint on policy and or you embrace Hillary Clinton and in my mind, you have five people in this country who are going to run the country. And those are the five Supreme Court justices, three were picked by her. And well have a court of 50yearold progressives for 25 years which whether youre a liberal or a conservative, if you believe the court should run the country, i think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what americas all about. Thats what a Hillary Clinton presidency will mean, not just for her four or eight years, but for 25 years. And i think thats the real big issue here. And, you know, what about mike pence . Does mike pence i like mike pence. Tell me, what are the qualities of mike pence that reassure you about the ticket . Well number one, i think he compliments trump demeanor wise. He is solid, lowkey, midwestern, solid of the earth kind of guy. And thats very calming, solid, no histrionics. I think thats a comfort for those who is he going to pick somebody like him to surround himself be . And he didnt. He picked someone who complimented him. Number one, number two, he picked a solid conservative. Someone who has a strong track record in washington, standing up as a conservative, conservative governor, and i think those two things really, hopefully affirm confirm that trump is going to be a conservative president and is going to surround himself with people who are going to try to execute that mission. If mike pence has impact and gets is in the inner circle, but as you point out, hes conservative and hes, hes tea party, hes evangelical christian, a man of deep faith and family. Yep. So its a good contrast with at least Donald Trumps background. But its a good contrast, but also gives an indication of who youre going to surround yourself with. I mean this is the first big pick. And he picked someone that republicans can feel confident about, someone that if youre a moderate or an independent you can say well heres a solid guy. Hes been a governor of indiana that has been a, you know, not someone whos done crazy things. Hes been, hes been very solid. I think that should provide a lot of reassurance to voters, not just the base, but to other voters across the country. Its a pleasure to see you again. Thank you. Coming up, the veep stakes, Hillary Clinton hinting at her top pick, or is she . Youre watching Andrea Mitchell reports on msnbc. Owen hey kevin. Hey, fancy seeing you here. She did talk about some of the others, but she sounded especially warm, Kristin Welker in las vegas, where clinton is today, especially warm about kaine and praising his qualifications. Reporter theres no doubt, saying dont read too much into that exchange, there is no doubt she was ready with that answer when charlie rose pressed her on whether tim kaine was too boring. She was ready to defend him. And look, it is someone who has been at the top of her short list for quite some time if you talk to insiders, he checks all the boxes, not only a senator of an important swing state, but hes also a former governor. He has Foreign Policy experience. He served as the dnc head. So all of those things, factoring in to secretary clintons decisionmaking process at the same time tom vilsack, the agriculture secretary getting a lot of buzz before we anticipate secretary clintons going to make her final decision. Helps her in iowa and perhaps most importantly the two have a close relationship that dates back decades. Thats something shes going to factor in, but if you listen to secretary clinton, if you talk to sources within the campaign, they say another key Decision Making factor is whether this person could replace her as president.
