When pope francis arrives here this evening he can rest well knowing hell be staying on the most secure block in new york city. You can see behind me this section of the block is already on lockdown with security the pope will arrive at jfk airport at 5 00 this evening. When he arrives, mayor de blasio and Governor Cuomo will greet the pope. Hell then take a helicopter from jfk to manhattan. At 6 00 the pope will take a slow roll patricks cathedral. At 6 35 hell attend evening prayer at the cathedral. We expect hell leave the cathedral and here are details where hell be staying. East 22nd street. Both john paul ii and Pope Benedict the 16th have stayed here at the residence. Inside theres a private chapel constructed not by the church but by the devout catholic family who built the home and eventually donated it to the church. Back here live now outside the townhouse as part of the security measures there are air monitoring devices on the corner. Also there will be bomb sniffing dogs. Snipers will be on the roof. And a bulletproof passageway will be constructed as well that will allow the pope to walk to and from his popemobile without the possibility of being shot. Take a look at all the work thats been done. We showed you the same youll notice in this area along 5th avenue, this fence stretches for about 25,000 feet. It was specially made for this papal visit. Other security measures being done here, potholes have been sealed up. All the lamps have been checked. Weve seen officers overnight walking the area with bomb sniffing dogs sweeping this entire section of midtown. It will be here all day ready for when the pope celebrates mass at st. Catholics cathedral this evening, and will be here till 9 p. M. All in the name of safety. We had to create a panel that was secure enough that nobody can get through and even though hes a people person, they also want to keep him safe. This fence, all 25,000 feet of it, will be brought down around 9 00 tonight. It will be moved to another location that has not been disclosed yesterday, possibly even to specially made for this papal visit. 5th avenue shut down already here. At least now 220 people are dead following a stampede during the hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of mecca. The number killed has increased in the last half hour. The stampede happened on the outskirts of mecca early this morning. Hundreds of others are hurt. There are more than 2 Million People in the area right now for the annual pilgrimage, which began earlier this week. Other news developing right now, in maryland, several homes have been destroyed in a gas explosion. This is the new video. Officials say that no one was home at the time the two town homes were blasted. The force of the explosion sent debris flying more than 50 feet away. It appears at least four homes were either destroyed or badly damaged. But the extent of the damage in the neighborhood in columbia is still unknown. The home of the papal is on east 72nd street between madison and fifth avenue. You can see its already on lockdown with security measures firmly in place. Now, the pope will arrive at jfk airport at 5 00 this evening. Mayor de blasio and Governor Cuomo will greet him when he arrives. From there, hell take a chopper to manhattan. At 6 00, the pope will take a slow roll in a motorcade down fifth avenue to st. Patricks cathedral. At 6 45, he will attend prayer at the cathedral. Then were expecting around 7 45, he will leave the cathedral and make his way here to the town home on east 72nd street. A bit of information about the home where the pope will be staying. It is an 11,000square foot town house near central park that was built in 1894. Its been the vaticans Diplomatic Mission since the 1970s. Pope john paul ii and Pope Benedict xvi have also stayed here. Inside the home, there is a private chapel constructed not by the church, but by the devout catholic family who built the home and eventually donated it to the church. Back here live this morning, you can see a lot of nypd activity outside the home at this Early Morning hour. As part of those security measures that are in place, there are air monitoring devices on the corner. There will be bombsniffing dogs, also snipers on the roof, and a bulletproof passage way has been constructed that will allow the pope to walk to and from his pope mobile without the possibility of being shot. And there are a number of people who also live on this block. They will have to be searched and also show id before they are allowed to enter this safety zone here. But in 30 well see a little bit of relief. Fifth avenue and the streets in the area of st. Patricks cathedral will reopen here from 6 00 to 10 00. So they are preparing now. You can see some of the barricades have been moved out of the way. That will start at 6 00 this morning, remain open until 10 00 this morning. But lets take you to st. Patricks cathedral, five blocks away from us. Take a look. Police commissioner bill bratton personally conducted security checks along his route yesterday. During that sweep, commissioner bratton also met with Cardinal Timothy dolan to discuss Prayer Services that take place tonight 569 45 led by pope francis at st. Patricks. Those Prayer Services last about half hour, but the security preparations started well before this morning. Earlier this morning, we noticed bombsniffing dogs with officers scouring the area where the fence went up. All week long weve been talking about potholes being filled and manholes being sealed all in the name of safety. Back to the fence, the steel fence we showed you yesterday around central park was specially made for the papal it stretches 25,000 feet along fifth avenue avenues. The steel mesh makes it unclimbable and its secured with concrete and steel where it cannot be toppled over. We had to create a panel that was secure enough that nobody can get through and also keep even though hes a people person, they also want to keep him safe. Reporter the fence will quickly be brought down around 9 00 tonight, well after the pope is away from this area here. Then it will be moved to another undisclosed location, possibly even philadelphia. The popes next stop in just a few days. New this morning, a Chain Reaction crash involving a Police Cruiser in queens sends two officers and a motorcyclist to the hospital.
