A fire rips through a hyde park area sending several residents and firefighters to the hospital. The firefighters had to prop up ladders to rescue people from the building. Witnesses tell the sun Chronicle Police were at the home to investigate a domestic disturbance last night, when the suspect fired five shots at officers at the door. Officers reportedly returned fire. No word on any injuries. Secured around 2 00 a. M. The red cross is helping those left homeless this morning, when a gas fuel fire several residents and apartment. Fire crews had to prop up ladders to rescue people from the burning building and all that under an intense deadline. As jim smith reports, a natural flames. When she opened the basement everywhere. Reporter intense flames and thick smoke tearing through a home at 9 greenwood avenue. Four were rescued by ladder, two adults, two kids. The challenge is when you get the call that children are in the building. We went in and the guys did a great job plucking them out. Reporter just across the street, a family watches. They grew up in this house. Were happy that everybody is safe and everybody got out. Must have been terrifying. Oh, it was horrible. I didnt know if anybody was hurt. All i knew is when i got the phone call they were taking my mother to the hospital, so i was just, i was so scared. Reporter in all, five residents and two firefighters were taken to the hospital. The multifamily home is just about a total loss, just a few days before thanksgiving. People lose their house for thanksgiving and now it happens to us. Unbelievable. Im still in shock. I dont believe it. We just lost my dad a couple of months ago and his ashes are in there, all his pictures and everything. We lost everything. Army paratrooper Aaron Cordova martinez was killed in a Traffic Accident while riding a mile in north carolina. The 24yearold was stationed at fort bragg. Cordova martinez is survived by his wife, stepdaughter and parents. Tomorrow, a former baby sitter will be arraigned on charges she broke into a suburban home and kidnapped a little 2yearold girl. That child is still in the hospital, but we are told she is doing better. As Christina Hager reports, police have an awful lot of questions for the 21yearold currently being held without bail. Reporter after searching this hamilton home friday night, Police Arrested a woman who used to babysit for the family that lives here and cared for the 2yearold girl who was abducted and found on the side of the road here friday. Police spent friday afternoon and evening questioning 21year old Abigail Hannah, who now faces a list of charges, including breaking and entering, kidnapping, and assault and battery. After the girl mysteriously disappeared from her home while her parents slept, she turned up in rowley hours later, naked, her head shaved, and of leaves. Yes, very interesting the next 24 hours. Then its smooth sailing all the way through thanksgiving. We have to get through a system right now and a system tonight. The one right now, this is the same system that brought the midwest all that heavy snow. Were getting only a few showers and a couple of sprinkles on satellite and radar picture. Here right around the cape, getting those showers with a few sprinkles along the southshore, even around the boston area. Getting reports of drizzle as well. Otherwise, overcast skies and a little bit of a dark picture outside. Satellite and radar, as we zoom out, looking to the south, theres another area of low pressure thats going to make its way along the coastline later today, giving us another round of rain after 2 00 p. M. Hour by hour forecast will show the rain pushing in from the southwest and bursts of heavy all the way to the south and east here. This includes boston, the cape, the islands. We keep the rain in the forecast and even a chance for wintry mix late tonight. Ill have the hourbyhour timing in a bit. Thanksgiving forecast is looking just fine. 55 degrees with sunshine. Two firefighters and five other people were taken to the hospital, the result of a major fire in hyde park. The fire broke out yesterday afternoon around 5 30 on greenwood avenue. 10 people were in the home at the time. Crews rescued four people over ladders from the left side of the house. Investigators say the fire was fueled by gas. The gas company was on scene to shut off the lines. The former babysitter of a little girl from hamilton found hurt and abandoned on the side of the road is now facing kidnapping and assault charges. Topsfield is due in court on monday. The 2yearold girl remains at childrens hospital, but the District Attorney says her condition is improving. The city of brussels remains on high alert after officials in belgium raised the threat risk to its highest level. The belgian government describes the threat of an attack in the brussels area as serious and imminent. Brussels is home to nato and the european union. The u. S. Embassy in belgium has urged americans to shelter in place. Funeral services will be held today for a local teenager shot and killed in the west bank. 18yearold Ezra Schwartz was in israel on a gap year. He was on his way back from delivering food to Israeli Soldiers in the west bank, when someone opened fire. Israeli defense says a palestinian gunman is to blame. The Funeral Service will be held privately. Baby bella bond will be buried next saturday in shes the toddler who was known only as baby doe for months after her body was found in a plastic garbage bag on shore island. After several autopsies, her body was released just a few days ago. Bellas mom and her mothers boyfriend are both charged in her death. The vatican says pope francis is going through with a planned trip to a war zone, but that could change. On wednesday, the pontiff will begin a fiveday trip to africa. Its the third leg of the trip that has some Security Officials quite concerned. Next sunday, the pope wants to stop in the capital of the Central African republic and visit a mosque in a neighborhood dominated by jihaddist forces. The neighborhood is considered a nogo for anyone who could be considered a target for extremists. Now, isis has already threatened to attack rome, the city that surrounds the vatican and the papal residence. When civilians are targeted for mass murder by terrorists, it course. But nowhere more so than here in boston, for obvious reasons. Here to talk with us about Public Safety in the wake of the paris attacks is the man who helped lead our response to the marathon bombings, former Boston Police commissioner ed davis, now wbzs security analyst. Welcome, ed. Good morning, john. Thank you. Thank you very much for coming. We appreciate it. Were told by federal authorities that theres no credible threat to u. S. Soil right now. What does that really mean . Well, i think the better word is specific threat. I think thats what they are trying to say. Theres a credible threat just right now. As these things unfold, you can see that isis has operationallized an international ability to strike geographically. But when they say theres no credible threat, i think they theres nothing happening in the United States right now that they can point to, to say there is a plot under way. Thats when you can get to that point, thats the highest level of awareness and caution that you have to be exercising. Would they necessarily tell us if there was . Probably not immediately. Yeah. But at some point in time, there is a discussion. It happened during the marathon, that the public needs to be made aware of this. Theres a lot of debate around that as to when that happens. Watching the horror show in paris, i was reminded of the sudbury man who is now serving 17 years in federal prison for conspiring to commit terror. If i recall correctly, he was planning to arm up and shoot up a shopping mall. Is that the template now, the home grown nut attacking a soft target like a mall . Well, it was the template up until the paris attacks. The tareq case originated with one of my officers in lowell. Was transpiring. That model is exactly what isis was pointing to, the way that they wanted to operate. And it played itself out to some degree here in boston. It played itself out in garland, texas earlier this year. It played itself out on the streets of boston on washington street just a few months ago, when that armed encounter occurred in rosen dale. So it was a successful process for them. Now. There was an Inflection Point a few days ago in paris where territorial operations outside of syria and iraq and that is extremely troubling. Well, what sort of precautions should a calm, reasonable bostonian take for, lets say the balance of the Holiday Season here, when there shopping and gatherings . By these guys. The odds are youll probably be struck by lightning more likely than be a victim to some of these things. Those are hollow words to marathon. Boston. The bottom line, be aware. Dont let people frighten you. But be aware of your surroundings. If you see something suspicious, report it. Make sure that you know where the exits are if youre in a big event. Im going to the Football Game saturday night. Im going to be very aware of my exits and whats happening around me. And thats what i would recommend that people do. Dont change your activities, but be understanding that there is a threat. No need to avoid the mall or anything like that . Right. I truly believe that to be the case. All right. Welcome back to our conversation with wbz security analyst ed davis, who regularly appears on wbz news to help us make sense of these Public Safety and terrorism issues. Ed, what do you make of the uproar of last week overseerian refugees and in the wake of the news that one of the paris attackers may have traveled to migration . Well, this is happening people are afraid. And they should be. And so its sort of a normal reaction that people would start to think about other issues. It gets dangerous when you start to paint people with a broad brush. And we have, we have a system laws and also a system of fair play and doing the right thing that is, thats really important to think about when you think about these new policies. Should we increase our surveillance in our investigation . No question about it. Are there very specific issues that need to be remedied, like a lack of connection to the government and not being able to access records, things like that . They have to be brought into the equation. But just to say that no one from syria could come to the United States i think is way overblown. And i think that you have to look at these other countries that have this problem. Are you going to stop people coming here from yemen, syria, iran, turkey . Happening everywhere. You cant just blame one particular country for this. Well, there were some political figures around the country who immediately went to, you know, defcon 5. The governor of massachusetts, new hampshires governor simply said we would like some reassurances from the feds about their level of confidence in their ability to vet incoming refugees, so we dont get a bad guy slipping in with the pack. Whats your level of confidence in that process . Its imperfect. Its not a perfect system. So you need to governor baker and the other individuals that have said we need to tweak these systems, increase them, find out exactly where the holes are and then make a determination based upon a good knowledge of whats happening are exactly right. But once you have that knowledge, you have to base your decisions on the evidence that presents itself. There was one attacker in paris thats been identified as a refugee. But there were seven who were not refugees. So shutting down the borders doesnt solve the problem. We have to remember that. You can get afraid to a point where youre making bad decisions and i dont think thats a good idea. Were just about out of time, but are we going to win this battle . Battle . Well, john, this is a long term battle. They told us that in 9 11, with the training that we experienced right after 9 11. But there are only 30,000 people that are in syria in iraq that are causing this right. And thats a problem that we can solve and we need to solve it quickly. Ed davis, thank you. Thank you, john. Then we have showers to deal ill get to that in a second. Radar picture shows only a few specs of green, a little wintry mix showing up in vermont right now. And vipir as we zoom out, showing you the Bigger Picture. Anything thats falling right now, any drizzle from the clouds, any of that, a little bit of mist or spray, thats because we have this weak system moving through. That same system actually produced all that snow out there in chicago and in the midwest, now continuing to push to the northeast and affecting our friends in canada. But to the south, we have another low pressure system. Thats the one thats going to affect us later this evening, really ramping up the rain totals. Hour by hour, 9 00 a. M. , this weak system continues to move out to sea. It will stall out after noon, allowing for showers around the cape and islands by noon. Partly sunny skies otherwise farther to the north and west. That system as it stalls out, low pressure moves up the coastline. By 5 00 p. M. , helping to pull in a ton of rain. Heavy, soaking rain from boston all the way to the south and east, especially on the cape and islands. Then check out 1 00 a. M. In our hourbyhour. Temperatures are going to be very close to the freezing mark all along the coast of main, new hampshire, and even cape anne to boston. Inside the 128 belt, all the way to the south, could see 3 00 a. M. A. M. That morning commute, dry, but with any of that wintry mix, wouldnt be surprised if we did have a couple of slick spots in the morning. Dont expect any accumulation out of any of the snowflakes that you might experience overnight. However, friends in maine will get some measurable snowfall. Projected rainfall for us, 0. 56 inches of rain in boston. Nothing in manchester. Worcester, only a brief area of rain.
