Down their sidewalks here and theyre slipping everywhere. You want to be careful as you leave your front door. If you can wait a few hours. A closer look at some of the tweets were getting. Freezing rain in hatville coat everything with ice. This is just outside of doyletown, were seeing folks that are playing, it looks like on this dam here thats been glazed over. You want to just take your time this morning. Be careful if you can stay home do so. Ill continue to collect different videos and photos for you and ill have another round, coming up. I think whats incredible about those pictures and especially that video, brittney it looks like the sidewalk is perfectly fine. Thats what a lot of drivers are encountering, it seems like its fine and passable but in fact youve got a sheet of ice. Thats why this is dangerous. It is not worth it to go outside. Again, the advice this morning, stay home. Lets check in now with ted greenberg. Reporter good morning, rosemary. Good morning, ted. Tell us what youre seeing down the shore . Luckily, a completely different story here for folks who are in the jersey shore region. Im at northfield right now at the intersection of route 9 new road and tilton road. Where i am its 46 degrees and raining here we have the influence of the ocean which keeps things warmer and we have not been seeing those terrible icing conditions that you guys have been seeing closer to philadelphia. Ive been checking with Police Departments around the shore reign as well. Even as far west as hammington which is about 30 miles west of the post. And the police chief there told me that theyre not seeing any icing problems either luckily, for people driving around this area. Were just seeing wet roads, rain still coming down but temperatures in the mid40s right now. Not hovering near that 32degree temperature mark like so many people are seeing in greater philadelphia area. Ted, we just switched over from the video, from the live picture of 76 west to your picture, which is looks like like you said in north field atlantic county. Looks like a light drizzle out there this morning. So maybe conditions are improving where you are . Yes, absolutely. I think it just has been too warm for most of the morning. Here, we have a light drizzle coming down. Again, that picture youre seeing is a busy intersection. Route 9, new road and tilton road in north field, just mainly wet roads here some puddles on the road but for people driving here, no icing problems. Ted greenberg from our Jersey Shore Bureau thank you for being with us this morning. Well probably check back in with you later. And i know people can follow you on twitter to get the latest information about whats happening down the shore. The good news is conditions are okay south of philadelphia. At 10 03 this morning, two people skilled this morning in that accident two People Killed on the blue route in broomall. These are deadly dangerous conditions. Bridges connecting new jersey and p. A. Remain closed. We did get an update a short while ago that the eastbound lanes of the ben franklin are open but westbound, where the backup is those are still closed. Theyre monitoring those conditions there and theyre trying to salt those roads so once they do reopen and the temperatures rise, people dont get into anymore accidents. Lets take you back to this live picture, 76 west again, the schuylkill expressway two People Killed. We were reporting earlier it was one person. Officials are now telling us two people. Many people got up this morning, anticipating that it would just be a rain event. However, because the temperature did not get warm enough its been freezing conditions. Lets check in now with Michelle Grossman. Shes outside to tell us whats happening at this hour. Michelle, any improvement . Reporter a little bit. Were not seeing the ice on the ground, but still slick out here. Ill show you that in just a minute. But right now, miserable outside. Steady rain coming down. Its all rain coming down and its not freezing when it hits at least this patio. So lets take a look up here. Were seeing some visibilities reduced. We talked about that earlier with the airports. The ground stoppage. Were stilling seeing reduced visibilities here. Not great driving weather in terms of that. And in terms of the wet weather, were seeing steady rain. Lets go down here sean where were seeing some leftover ice. This is what youll encounter. I got so many tweets and Facebook Messages about slippery conditions. You can really feel that. If youre not expecting it and walk outside, it could be dangerous. And on top of that were having the rain melting all of it. Were seeing some ponding as well. And that especially we just talked to ted, well see some ponding there with poor drainage areas. We dont have any draining there. You can see it all piling up. These are the type of things youll see as you head out. Besides that its cold miserable, damp. Lets take a look at city avenue moving pretty well right now, but you can see the windshield wipers going pretty fast. But were getting up the hill okay getting down the hill okay. Big difference i was just talking to one of our guards, who actually had a problem driving in. He slid down this road coming back from the store. So that was at 6 30 this morning. Improvement since then but still seeing just a miserable day outside. Please stay indoors if you can. Its dangerous on many of the roadways, especially the sidewalks and the secondary streets, your driveway just getting your newspaper in the morning. Keep it indoors if you can. Meteorologist Michelle Grossman out there for us. Thank you, michelle and we just got an update from septa. They had told us at 10 00, they were going to reassess the situation. They had suspended bus service. We now know it has resumed, but expect delays. So of course keep that in mind and anybody who has to be out there on the roads, they really shouldnt be. The idea this morning is to stay inside, as weve been reporting, there have been some deadly accidents. I want to make one correction on that 76 westbound accident one person dead two people in the blue route accident. So a very difficult morning out there. This is why we want you to stay off the roads this morning. You dont notice if theres ice on the roads, it just looks wet. The rain is not falling as anything but rain. It is falling as a wet rain from the sky. Until it hits the pavement not your car windshield but the pavement, its going to freezing on contact. So in the philadelphia area we are seeing a little bit of a mixed bag here. We have pink yellows, greens. It is a mix between rain and freezing rain. Now, rain falls on the ground and does not freeze it melts, keeps the ground wet. Freezing rain however, freezes on contact. So icy conditions where you see the pink. Most of this is north and west of the i95 corridor. But again, we had little spotty areas all over. 76 Conshohocken Norristown west conshohocken. Were seeing a lot of areas where we have the rain freezing on contact. Bryn mawr across the p. A. Turnpike, even around glenside in lower Montgomery County we have the rain falling. Its getting a little heavier, but still have some icy spots on the roadways. And even when those temperatures warm up a little bit above freezing, we still have that ice from earlier this morning, which is now turning to slush, which will make your car skid out. So be careful cautious. We dont want you really to hit the roads until a few hours from now, when temperatures warm up. So you want to stay inside at this point. You notice this is all pink here. This is freezing rain it is freezing on contact. You saw the video brittney showed you earlier. On the roadways we have the ice around. People getting in accidents all over. In the allentown area lehigh valley, in our suburbs north and west, it is icy out there. You do not want to be driving. In upper bucks county we have ice here falling or ice on the roadways. So rain falling, freezing on contact. In upper bucks county it is icy. You do not want to be on the roadways. We advise you to stay home at this point until temperatures go above freezing. In Lower Bucks County all the major interstates, even getting into parts of Burlington County across the major areas, you see the green and yellows. The green and yellows is freezing rain. We call that ice on the roadway. This is patchy. In this area, be very careful, because you could hit just one patch of ice and it will cause your car to skid out. Across the i95 corridor through philadelphia, we have icy spots from earlier this morning in philadelphia. Even though temperatures are climbing above freezing, it does not matter. Take a look at this accident. Even though we are seeing some of this transition over to just rain, those icy spots are still there, they may be becoming slushy, so this may cause you to skid out and lose control. And whats deceiving about this kind of weather is that this time of year we think that its the snow. You know drivers see the snow and stay inside. But when you have this kind of rain, you think, its just a rain day, no big deal. But those freezing temperatures that freezing surface on the ground, thats the issue. And thats why we watch it so closely this morning, because now we are paying very close attention to the temperatures they play a big role in this. Now we look at the radar, even though delaware temperatures are above freezing we still have heavy rain enough to cause an accident. We still have that large accident on the right side of your screen and this is all because of what is happening on the radar right now. So now well zoom down to delaware and south jersey. Ted greenberg reported accidents in new jersey because of the heavy rain. Doesnt matter if temperatures are above freezing, but now we have the heavy rain moving in. Low visibility wet roadways people cant see very well theyre driving too fast. Closer to the shore, even southern delaware, this is mostly light rain at the moment. This is the critical factor in all of this the temperatures. If we could make that full screen so we can see those numbers a little better. 31 in chester springs, if you can see that number. 33 in horsham. These are barely either at or below freezing. This is a big factor in what happens to the rain when it falls. Philadelphia now, good news 34 degrees. Not too long ago, we were at 32. 35 northwest philly. 36 kenneth square. And now through the lehigh valley, some of these numbers have gone up a degree but they are still either at or below freezing. These numbers are very critical in what is happening when the rain falls. South jersey and delaware these numbers are in the 40s. We wont worry about freezing conditions where we see numbers in the 40s. But it is a first alert weather day. If you are tuning in, we have ice on the roadways, dangerous driving. This is rain freezing on contact. Right now we have most of this north and west of the i95 corridor. However, the rain moved in earlier this morning and temperatures were below freezing, so we have icy spots regardless if the temperatures were 2 degrees below freezing, 1 degree above freezing. Now its going to turn a little slushy and take its time to get out of the area. So either way, all the roadways around the i95 corridor philadelphia, even north and west very dangerous driving this morning. But were going to monitor it. And sheena, for our viewers who may just be tuning in explain what a first alert weather day is . A first alert weather day is a day where we expect hazard travel, dangerous conditions. If you walk outside, it could be dangerous in many cases. It is dangerous right now. So we are letting you know that this is the type of weather where you dont want to drive, really dont even want to be Walking Around the sidewalks. That is dangerous in and of itself with all the ice around. So first alert weather days with these type of conditions were warning you not to get on the roadways. It is very dangerous out there. Unfortunately, we already reported fatalities in some of the accidents because of the weather thats occurring now. And its going to continue as we go through the next few hours here. I dont see any reason for it not to continue especially areas north and rest of the i95 corridor. But keep in mind from the ice this morning, even though the rain may not be freezing anymore in some spots with all the ice, we still now are dealing with the ice that has turned to slush. That is slippery when you drive. Three people dead. I think the idea is it is not worth it. It is definitely not worth it. It is a sunday. People do not need to go to work today. Stay inside. Dont hit the roadways until those temperatures warm up. We want to give you this update from the Delaware River Port Authority. They are reporting that right now, some bridges are still closed. That includes the betsey ross whereby walt whitman, ben franklin, and the Commodore Barry bridge. They are all reopened. If you happen to be out there on the roads and stuck in that backup traffic, proceed to your house, wherever you can go to to be safe. Again, the idea is get off the roads and stay safe. Lets go back to this accident from 76 west. This is the dangerous deadly conditions that we have been talking about this morning. If we could pull up that picture, well show people whats happening out there. Again, it is still backed up. It is not moving. Its going to be this way for a few more hours. Emergency crews are trying to clear it up but it has looked this way since 7 00 this morning. Were going to take a quick break. We will be right back. Count on nbc 10. And meteorologist Brittney Shipp is tracking the temperatures for us out there this morning. Tell us what were looking at brittney . Thats telling the story right now. If you take a closer look our right now temperature shows were dealing with freezing rain if youre closer to coatesville, only 32 degrees. Its 31 degrees, below freezing in pottstown. Youre taking a closer look at the radar. And thats showing where were seeing more of a mix in that glaze. That pink thats where its icy. Its mainly the i95 corridor points to the north and west and the reason is the temperature. Take a look at pottstown, below freezing, 31 degrees. Were just at freezing in quakertown. Allentown, 31 degrees. Were at 30 degrees in reading. So these are your locations that are going to be dealing with the freezing rain right now. We have freezing rain advisory that is going to stay in effect until 1 00 p. M. Especially for these locations. We expect these temperatures to be very slow to warm. This will continue to be our concern. The freezing rain. It will come down at rain but as soon as it hits these surfaces thats when were dealing with the problems. Our concern is going down. But if we take a closer look at there other regions here, wilmington 36 above freezing. Thats all rainfall coming down. Washington township 36 degrees. Mt. Holly, a little qubl here. One degree above freezing. Were still concerned with the possibility of icy spots. But south jersey we dont have concerns. Were close to 50 degrees near the Atlantic City airport. Well show you where those temperatures are below freezing versus the rain thats coming down and you can see icy conditions. Allentown, reading, thats why were seeing the pink here on the radar. Same thing for philadelphia mainly seeing is moderate rainfall coming down. Were still dealing with pockets of icy conditions. If i zoom you in to exactly where that is you can see through philadelphia ill pause it. Youre still dealing with the possibility of freezing rain and thats closer to del iran. If we fly you over here to the north of philadelphia, well zoom in over this interstate here, thats near 76 and 13. You want to be careful in all of these areas this morning. If youre traveling close to bryn mawr. Always reporting the possibility of freezing rain. Its the temperature were keeping a close eye on. Well send it over to rosemary and sheena right now. It is warming up down the shore. Thats good news for folks down here but very different story in philadelphia and in the immediate surrounding area. Take a look, heres what we know. Septa bus service, suspended until 11 00 this morning. They had been reassess the situation at 10 00 and had been suspended earlier. We are hearing it will continue to be suspended until 11 00 a. M. Rail Service Suspended at suburban station in philadelphia. We do have some goons about the bridges. Ben franklin and Commodore Barry, they have reopened. The crews have been out there salting them so any of those cars that have been backed up waiting for the brinldges to reopen, the drivers can now travel in safe conditions. But if youre at home right now, stay at home. Were checking on whats happening in delaware. We bring in ted furlong, who is our tim furlong, who is down in delaware. Tim, tell us what youre seeing. Im seeing slippy roads. My thermometer says 36. There is still this layer of ice on the road. So what we have in delaware are speed restrictions down to 35. A big wide road where people tend to zip through pretty fast as they bypass north and south of the city of wilmington. On the side roads, thats where youre seeing a little bit more of the slipping and salting. There are plenty of del dot salt trucks. They mobilized earlier and got the army out there. This might have caught a few people off guard just walking out of their houses. I went out to walk my dog and the sidewalk slippery. What rosemary said right there is, if you dont have to go out, maybe just wait even a couple hours to go out, because at this point, the roads still are a little bit slick. Not as slick as it could be you know, a few hours ago when the ice is fresh and the reimburse cold, but here in northern delaware its up to the upper 30s, but there is a thin layer of ice on the road. Del dot takes care about 90 of delawares roads. I followed a salt truck. You can see 95 through the city of wilmington same deal. It means slower traffic behind these salt trucks but thats a good thing. Theyre doing their jobs and keeping good care of the roads. Ill check in with state police and del dot. Thats the story live from the highways and roadways from the state of delaware. And this video comes to us from tim furlong this delaware. Thank you, tim. Now lets go to nbc 10s monique braxton. She has been live at the base of the ben franklin bridge watching the situation there. Monique, update us on whats happening. Reporter all lanes here at the ben franklin bridge have been reopened but weve been following the Delaware River Port Authority on twitter, and theyre telling us that only two lanes of the Commodore Barry bridge have reopened. Speed restrictions there, still at 15 miles an hour. Ive also been following new Jersey Transit authority on twitter. Three things to tell you. Number one, they are crosshonoring the rail and bus passes. But if youre lucky enough to get on one and heading north to bergen, pa sake somerset counties, service has been suspended there. And the access links on the new Jersey Transit they are suspended until 12 00. Were going to continue to monitor the situation, but for now, traffic here approaching from the westbound side the ben franklin bridge all lanes are open heading westbound and eastbound. Salt trucks are taking a break right now. It appears the situation here is definitely improving. But were going to stay on top of it for you. Live from the ben franklin bridge, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. I heard you say that conditions appear to be improving, at least on the road. But it looks like the rain is picking up there. Well check back with monique in just a moment. Lets get to jillian mele. She has been watching all the Traffic Cameras this morning and jillian, i know youve been focusing on whats been happening on 76 and the blue route, as we have two deadly accidents there. Tell us about it. We have multiple fatalities in these accidents. We know at least one person dead in this accident on 76. Thats what youre looking at right now. It happened 76 westbound, right near gulf mills. But the entire highway is shut down as a result. Because what happens when you have these massive accidents and these big pileups is they need the other side of the highway, and they i mean emergency officials. They need the other side of the highway to bring in ambulances to bring in you know, fire department, to bring in police officers. They just need that room. Because as you can see, they dont have that on the westbound side. So that response happens on the other side of the highway. Thats why we have both lanes still shut down both directions still shut down on 76. That pileup that youre seeing thats the westbound side near gulf mills. Eastbound side is shut down because of this response. A couple of minutes ago, we had a big backup out here. This is what crews have been able to do, just completely clear this highway of any traffic that was out there. All of those drivers who were stuck sitting behind that accident scene, they have been able to get everybody off of the highway. This is what 76 looks like right near conshohocken. Its just a ghost town out there right now. So crews have done a pretty good job of trying to get everybody off of the highway. And thats what its looking like. This is the eastbound side approaching that closure. This is closer to route 202 in the can you think of prussia area. If you would be traveling 76 from 202 into center city this is what youre dealing with right now. Now crews are trying to get all of these drivers off of the highway. So we do have a pretty big backup on 76 eastbound. The other fatal accident that weve been following is on the blue route, right near route 3, right near broomall upper darby. And these vehicles havent gone anywhere in about the hour and a half to two hours or so that ive been monitoring this camera. This is the northbound side what were seeing right here. We have had accidents in both directions on the blue route. Weve seen accidents near route 1. Weve seen multiple accidents near route 3. And we do know that this is a fatal accident. Two people have been confirmed dead in this accident on the blue route. So both very serious accidents that we continue to follow. We also see a number of accidents on 95. A lot of them have cleared, but we are still dealing with heavy volume on 95 in the area of the walt whitman bridge. Take a look at this. This is one of our cameras on the northbound side of 95 just past the walt whitman bridge. As you can see, no one is really exempt from these problems out here. We still have the pennsylvania turnpike shut down in both directions. It is shut down completely between morgantown and the Delaware River bridge in that area as a result of the icy conditions and the black ice on the turnpike. Ill keep you updated. Im closely monitoring these cameras. I havent left my desk. And of course Sheena Parveen and i are here monitoring everything thats happening on the radar, of course, were checking with our crews in the field. At 10 30, in just a few moments, meet the press will come on here on nbc 10. We will continue on cozi tv. So get the latest information on the conditions out there, the weather, again, the issue, of course, is that temperature rising. Thats when things will really start to improve on the road. You can get all of that information on cozi. Sheena thats what were watching for, that temperature to keep creeping up past 32 degrees. And even in many cases when it is slowly getting past that 32 mark were seeing the ice from this morning change to slush. And another thing i want to mention, we have heavy rain moving from the south. We have ice in creeks. The heavy rain on top of that could make flooding conditions across the area. Remember that as youre driving, icy conditions areas north and west right now, heavy rain moving in from the south. In parts of montgomery bucks county across all the major interstates, the p. A. Turnpike we have icy spots out there, especially as we go into parts of the lehigh valley. This is ice. Freezing rain falling, rain falling, freezing on contact. Upper bucks county we have icy conditions. Lower bucks county we have patchy spots of ice, even closer to trenton, and there you see across the i95 corridor this is heavy rain moving in with the yellows and oranges. Its all moving in from the south and southeast. This is something were really going to monitor, because as we go through the rest of this evening or the rest of the midday hours im trying to say, this is when we could see heavy rain potentially leading to some flooding concerns. And the idea this morning, stay home. If you are not out there on the roads, dont go out. Youll want to wait a few more hours. Well continue to monitor this weather, to monitor the conditions out on the roads, on cozitv. Thats where were headed to now. Meet the press is coming up next here on nbc 10. Again, stay with us on cozitv when youve got something to share, you need upload speed. And only verizon fios gives you upload speeds. As fast as your download speeds.
